  1. Welcome, everyone. It's good to see everybody

  2. that's here. We do have several of our number

  3. that are, is this loud. We do have several of our number

  4. that are missing. But it's great to see all of you

  5. and we have a wonderful crowd because you're here and it is

  6. great to see you. We've been praying for you,

  7. Jason, and it's wonderful to see you with us today.

  8. And our prayers have been answered.

  9. That's wonderful. This morning we're going to

  10. continue our series on the great Sermon on the Mount, and we come

  11. to Matthew Chapter 7 and verses 13 and 14 where Jesus is going

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  12. to teach us a lesson about the difficult way that leads to

  13. life. I want to notice these passages

  14. first of all, beginning in verse 13.

  15. Jesus said this entered by the narrow gate, for wide is the

  16. gate, and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there

  17. are many who go in by it because narrow is the gate and difficult

  18. is the way which leads to life and there are few that find it.

  19. In chapter 6 and verses 19 through 21, the Lord teaches us

  20. that there's life after this life, that man's existence is

  21. going to extend or go beyond this life.

  22. We know that in Chapter 7 and verses 13 and 14, the Lord's

  23. going to tell us that that existence is going to be in one

  24. of two places. So the choices that we make are

  25. very important in our life because they're going to

  26. determine where it is that we spend eternity.

  27. We all know that. And Jesus gives in this

  28. masterful sermon really, I guess, a reality check.

  29. The Lord was great about keeping it real.

  30. What I'm going to say is we're going to talk about some things

  31. that are difficult to grasp. And sometimes as we go through

  32. this, we may get a little discouraged, but have No Fear

  33. because in the end, we're going to show that it's worth it.

  34. We're in the end, we're going to show that we really can do it

  35. regardless of the circumstances, regardless of the difficulties

  36. and even the persecutions and tribulations that would come our

  37. way in entering the gate that leads to the narrow way that

  38. leads to life. That's why Jesus in the very

  39. beginning of this passage, he says this.

  40. You got to enter by the narrow gate.

  41. Now I'm just going to say this in advance.

  42. So you don't think, man, he's spending a lot of time on this

  43. first phrase. We got a lot to cover in two

  44. verses. We're going to be here for a

  45. really long time. Have No Fear.

  46. The majority of our lesson is going to be focused on this

  47. phrase because that's the point, the choice of entering by the

  48. narrow gate. And why is it narrow and why is

  49. the way difficult? You know, the Lord is the was

  50. the master at everything. He was the master at preaching.

  51. And he as he had this this audience of people on the great

  52. Sermon on the Mount, they would have understood the context of

  53. what he's talking about. And the reason for that is he is

  54. drawing a picture, a very vivid picture of two different walled

  55. cities with two very different gates.

  56. One is difficult and one is easy.

  57. Now, why is that significant? It's very significant because

  58. all ancient cities, or may I just say most ancient cities,

  59. were walled. In fact, you can go back to the

  60. Old Testament. You remember Nineveh.

  61. I read historians that said that Nineveh's walls were so wide to

  62. keep the enemy out that you could take two Chariots and

  63. drive them side by side on the top of the wall.

  64. That's how thick those walls were.

  65. There was another thing that was very common too, by the way, and

  66. Jerusalem very important. Around this time, Jerusalem was

  67. exactly the same. They were fortified with walls

  68. and how many gates? 11 main gate.

  69. And there was a reason for that, to protect himself from the

  70. enemy. Nobody can go back and

  71. circumvent the deal and come in the backside.

  72. You had to come in one gate and the guards would guard that gate

  73. to keep the enemy out. So they understood the

  74. illustration. The Lord is saying this to us.

  75. Please get this, Our life is the preparation ground for eternity.

  76. In fact, Diana reminded me of she called it one of my Frank

  77. isms a while back. But I've said this many times

  78. over the years. Here's the point.

  79. Our life is the trial, meaning we are on trial now.

  80. Where we're going to spend eternity is determined by the

  81. trial. Our trial is the life that we're

  82. living now. When we die, our fate is sealed

  83. in death and one of two things, we are either acquitted or we

  84. are convicted at death. Then when the Lord comes back at

  85. the resurrection, that is the sentencing day when the Lord

  86. will separate the sheep from the goats.

  87. So our life is the trial. It is the preparing for where we

  88. spend eternity, and that's what the Lord is saying here.

  89. I like what Fowler said. He said it this way.

  90. The emphasis is not on the entering as opposed to remaining

  91. outside, since all humanity is regarded as entering one gate or

  92. the other. So here's the emphasis.

  93. The emphasis is on the choice of the right gate.

  94. That's the emphasis of this passage, choosing the right

  95. gate. Now, why is the narrow gate the

  96. most unlikely? You know why?

  97. Because it's the one that's the hardest, the one that leads to

  98. life is the one that is the most difficult.

  99. But in order to be saved, you have to enter the gate.

  100. You can't just admire it. You can't just meditate on it.

  101. I want to make a little side point here, OK?

  102. I know a lot of people in my life that admire Jesus.

  103. I know a lot of people that even quote Jesus.

  104. I know a lot of people that speak words that Jesus spoke.

  105. Here's the problem. Far too many people today lack

  106. the commitment that it takes to commit themselves to the Lord so

  107. they can get enter the narrow gate that leads to the way of

  108. righteousness, that leads to the way of life.

  109. You ever heard people say this? You ever heard people say that

  110. we live in a godless society? You know that's not true.

  111. We do not live in a godless society.

  112. And I know it's very convenient for people to say, oh, look at

  113. all the stuff going on in the world.

  114. We live in a godless society. There are godless people,

  115. absolutely. There are people that don't

  116. recognize God. That's all true.

  117. But make no mistake about it, we really don't live in a godless

  118. society. Stay with me.

  119. I'm going to prove my point here in the city of Bakersfield.

  120. Did you know that we are not only #1 when it comes to bad

  121. air, but we are #1 in the entire state of California?

  122. By way of a survey that was taken regarding how many people

  123. are likely to attend church services or profess

  124. Christianity, Bakersfield, CA is number one in the state.

  125. Does that sound godless? Not to me.

  126. What's the problem? The problem isn't godless.

  127. The problem is commitment. That's the problem.

  128. It's commitment. If our society has a problem,

  129. it's commitment. And that stems in all aspects of

  130. our life. I remember coaching youth

  131. athletics. I used to tell the parents, take

  132. your vacations all year long. Do it.

  133. But during this time, that's my time.

  134. That's our time. Don't take vacations.

  135. You know what they did? Some of them, they didn't care.

  136. Took vacations. Commitment, commitment issues.

  137. That's our society. So Jesus says enter by the

  138. narrow gate. That's the new King James.

  139. The old King James says straight gate, and the word means narrow.

  140. That's why I love how the new King James says it, because it

  141. just says what the meaning is. Enter by the narrow gate.

  142. OK, what else? What does it mean?

  143. It means to groan as being under pressure.

  144. That's what the word means. The word straight or the word

  145. narrow, in a figurative sense, it denotes a restriction or

  146. constriction. That's what the word means.

  147. In other words, it's this. The path that leads to the

  148. Kingdom of heaven is extremely narrow and the only thing that

  149. there's room for. In other words, there's not room

  150. for anything other than these two things.

  151. Number one, God's plan and #2 the Lord's teaching.

  152. And that's found, by the way, in the New Testament.

  153. That's all the New Testament. The New Testament is the last

  154. will and testament of Jesus Christ.

  155. In other words, that's why it is narrow.

  156. That's why it is difficult. There's not room for anything

  157. else except God's plan and the Lord's teachings, and that's all

  158. that's revealed in the Word of God.

  159. OK. In other words, the gate is not

  160. wide enough for self righteousness, sinfulness, or

  161. even pride. I like how Luke records this.

  162. Notice what the Lord said in the Gospel according to Luke chapter

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  163. 13 and verse 24. He said the word strive.

  164. I got to talk about strive for just a moment.

  165. Have you ever heard somebody say we got to strive for perfection?

  166. I was coached old school and my coaches said we don't practice

  167. doesn't make perfect unless you practice perfect.

  168. And you know, they thought they were pretty wise by saying that.

  169. It's wisdom. That's great stuff, right?

  170. You know, it's a ridiculous concept to strive for perfection

  171. because you cannot ever attain it.

  172. When I coach football, I tried to emphasize something

  173. different. We're not going to strive for

  174. perfection. That's that's not attainable

  175. because everybody makes mistakes and nobody's perfect.

  176. We're going to strive for excellence, which is attainable.

  177. When the Lord talks about this word strive, He means something

  178. we can attain. We can actually attain

  179. something. What is it?

  180. The narrow gate, if we strive for it.

  181. You know the word, the Greek word for strive is the Greek

  182. word that we often come up with another English word too.

  183. And it's this word here, agony, that sounds painful.

  184. That doesn't sound like fun at all.

  185. Here's the point. To enter the Kingdom, to live

  186. the Christian life. It's not going to be a leisurely

  187. stroll. There's going to be some

  188. striving. There's going to be some

  189. struggle and even a little agony in our life.

  190. In other words, it comes with painful dedication.

  191. And bear with me, it's going to be worth it.

  192. We'll get to all that in Luke 16 and 16.

  193. Notice how he says it here. The law and the prophets were

  194. until John. Since that time, the Kingdom of

  195. God has been preached and everyone get this is pressing

  196. into it. The word actually means through

  197. intense pursuit. The American Standard version

  198. renders it like this. Every man entereth violently

  199. into it. Now, this doesn't suggest, by

  200. the way, it doesn't suggest that we can force our way into the

  201. Kingdom. That's not what that's talking

  202. about. The striving that we're talking

  203. about is this. We enter by pushing past all of

  204. the barriers that would stand in our way and sometimes that

  205. selfish desires, sometimes that selfish ambitions, sometimes

  206. that is things or anything in our life whatsoever you plug it

  207. in that stands in our way of being fully devoted and

  208. committed. There's that word again and

  209. committed to our Lord. That's what it is.

  210. That is the violently part. We press through those things,

  211. through those barriers aggressively.

  212. By the way, you've heard me say this before, but living the the

  213. Christian life is not a life of passive acquiescence.

  214. In other words, I'm just going to passively sit here and just

  215. hang in there till the Lord comes back.

  216. That is not Christianity. Christianity is a fight.

  217. Our weapon is the sword of the Spirit.

  218. That's the Word of God. And our life is about standing

  219. for the truth of the Word of God and following the Lord all the

  220. days of our life. And sometimes that means that's

  221. going to be really hard. Sometimes it's going to be

  222. really difficult. OK, what about this aspect right

  223. here? What about the violent part?

  224. What about that? The violence refers to the

  225. extreme demands that are on the Christian, but it also refers,

  226. get this to spiritual crucifixion.

  227. I'm going to get back to this in a minute, but I'm going to put

  228. one verse up. When we talk about spiritual

  229. crucifixion, notice then he said to them all, if anyone desires

  230. to come after me, let him deny Himself and take up His cross

  231. daily and follow me. That is spiritual crucifixion.

  232. May I just remind us that sometimes with this intense

  233. pursuit comes hard times. So don't be, don't be

  234. discouraged because it's always been that way.

  235. Notice with you some Bible for that in Acts chapter 14, a long

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  236. time ago these were brethren that were being warned of what

  237. was coming in their life. And in Acts 14 and 22, it says

  238. strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to

  239. continue in the faith, and saying we must through many

  240. tribulations enter the Kingdom of God.

  241. These were people that lived a long time ago, and they were

  242. told through many tribulations that were going to enter the

  243. Kingdom of God. I think it's important to

  244. reflect on the sacrifices that the forefathers had gone through

  245. in the days of the early church. That's true.

  246. But please understand, just because we are not persecuted

  247. like they were and we're not being martyred for our faith and

  248. really that in our life we may say that we have it easy.

  249. Make no mistake about it. The Bible says that all that

  250. will live godly will what, suffer persecution of some kind,

  251. something. It may be a lost job because you

  252. said I'm not going to forsake the assembly.

  253. It may be that you lose out on something in your life and you

  254. didn't get a promotion or you didn't get something that you

  255. had coming that you deserved because you put the Lord first.

  256. Or you wouldn't side with people that are sinful doing sinful

  257. things and then you're being avoided as a result of it.

  258. Or somebody may make fun of a young person because they say,

  259. no, I'm a Christian. I don't do those kind of things.

  260. Regardless in your life, whatever it is, if you live

  261. godly, the Bible says you will suffer persecution.

  262. So let's just understand, tribulations come our way too,

  263. even in the modern time. And do you know why?

  264. Because Satan is still working. Satan is the enemy.

  265. He's still working. He was working when these words

  266. were spoken, and he's still working today.

  267. He just changes his tactics a little bit.

  268. He's cunning and crafting and he changes his tactics.

  269. OK, but just remember this. It's only going to be for a

  270. short time and then it's glory forever.

  271. Then that make you feel a little bit better when the words to the

  272. seven churches of Asia in the Book of Revelation went out.

  273. I love this passage. You've heard me preach on this

  274. passage in Revelation chapter 2 and verse 10.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  275. Smyrna was the persecuted church.

  276. So John the Revelator penning these words of Jesus, divinely

  277. inspired by the Holy Spirit said this.

  278. Do not fear any of those things which you're about to suffer.

  279. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison

  280. that you may be tested and you will have tribulation. 10 days.

  281. I'm going to get back to 10 days in a minute in a figurative

  282. sense, but let me just tell you what I can do anything for 10

  283. days. I can do anything for 10 days

  284. when I know that the outcome is great and the suffering is only

  285. for a short time. I remember when I had cancer, I

  286. remember the treatments were awful.

  287. OK, they were awful. And there were times when, man,

  288. I had to do a lot of praying just to get through it.

  289. Just to get through it and bear it.

  290. It was awful. Chemo was terrible, but

  291. radiation was even worse for head and neck cancer was

  292. terrible. The pain was awful.

  293. OK. But I always knew that I had the

  294. Lord #1 #2 the prognosis was good, my test results were

  295. getting better, and I knew if I just endure it for a little

  296. while, I'm going to be OK. It's amazing what we can do when

  297. we only have to endure it for a little time.

  298. You know what Jesus says, if you're going to have

  299. tribulation, it's only 10 days. It's only 10 days.

  300. But then he says be faithful until death.

  301. And by the way, this does not mean, although you can lump it

  302. in a general sense, it doesn't mean be faithful all your life

  303. and you'll get a crown of life. Although that's true, that's not

  304. what he means here. The context of the passage is

  305. really this. You're going to have tribulation

  306. 10 days, but be faithful even if it means your death.

  307. That's the context. And even if it means your death,

  308. don't worry, Jesus said I'm going to give you a crown of

  309. life. So here's my point.

  310. People talk about the days of tribulation.

  311. I was holding a meeting in Kentucky recently and there was

  312. a visitor that came one night and he came up and he wanted to

  313. talk to me after services about the period of tribulation.

  314. He want to talk about the rapture and the period of

  315. tribulation at the end of time. And I, I just said, look, I

  316. don't have time to go into all this with you today, but I will

  317. in the future if you'd like. But what I said is I said the

  318. period of tribulation is not at the end of time.

  319. The period of tribulation is right now in your life.

  320. It was in these people's lives. And by the way, the Book of

  321. Revelation, scholars say, was either written in the eighty 60s

  322. or in the eighty 90s and we don't know for sure.

  323. Scholars are all over the map. I'm just going to say it this

  324. way. That part doesn't matter.

  325. What I'm saying is when Jesus made this promise about the

  326. period of tribulation, it was a long time ago and every one of

  327. those people are dead now. OK, So what does it mean?

  328. What did the Lord mean when he said tribulation?

  329. 10 days? What is 10 days?

  330. Here it is, one short lifetime. You're going to have tribulation

  331. 1 short lifetime. Don't worry though, if you're

  332. faithful even to the point of even if they come and kill you,

  333. don't worry about it. The Lord said, I'm going to give

  334. you a crown of life. Another passage, John 1633.

  335. Jesus is speaking to his disciples, OK.

  336. Early eighty 30s he's speaking to his disciples.

  337. These things I've spoken to you, that in me you may have peace in

  338. the world, you will have tribulation speaking to his

  339. disciples, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world.

  340. And one more final passage in Acts 14 and 22, strengthening

  341. the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in

  342. the faith, and saying we must through many tribulations enter

  343. the Kingdom of God. OK, Because of that, because of

  344. the tribulations, because of the difficulty.

  345. That is why Jesus said few there be that find it.

  346. And the reason for that is because not everybody is willing

  347. to make the sacrifice. Do you remember in the days that

  348. the Hebrew writer wrote to the Hebrew Christians, it was

  349. looking forward to the point of the destruction of Jerusalem and

  350. they were under great persecution.

  351. That's why Hebrews 10/25 says not forsaking the assembling of

  352. ourselves together as a manner of some is, but exhorting one

  353. another so much more. You see they're approaching and

  354. I know there's different variations of opinions and

  355. there's merit to it. Is it the first day of the week?

  356. That day is at the end of time. There's merit in that, but the

  357. context really is the destruction of Jerusalem because

  358. that's what they could see. And as they were going toward

  359. the destruction of Jerusalem, they were being persecuted

  360. greatly. Oh, tribulations.

  361. And many of them quit and went back to the old Law of Moses

  362. because they said we don't want to pay the price, folks.

  363. That's why Jesus said few there be that find it because not

  364. everybody wants to pay the price.

  365. That's why it doesn't mean few are going to have access to it.

  366. It means few are going to make the willful choice to choose it

  367. because of what all of it comes with it.

  368. OK, all right, here's the contrast though.

  369. For wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leads to

  370. destruction. And there are many who go in by

  371. it. OK, that's the contrast.

  372. Another way people flow where the gates wide.

  373. It's a place that has no restrictions, No restrictions.

  374. The path is broad. One scholar said it this way.

  375. It suggests the fact that the Broadway is wide open country.

  376. In other words, it's not like going through a narrow gate to

  377. get on a path. It's like going through a big

  378. gate to a pasture. That's what it's like with no

  379. fences or boundaries. There's no rules or regulations

  380. to hinder one from doing what they want on the Broad Rd.

  381. One may go anywhere he wants to and live as undisciplined a life

  382. as he chooses. Does that kind of sound like

  383. the? World a little bit where people

  384. choose. To do whatever they want.

  385. When they place. Themselves in control instead of

  386. God being in control. Because they don't want.

  387. To have any restrictions. They don't want to have.

  388. Any rules at all? Now trust me.

  389. Living the Christian life is not just about obeying rules, but

  390. rules are part of it. The Word of God does give us

  391. rules to abide by in our life. Surely it is.

  392. I'm just saying being a Christian is more than just

  393. rules. But yes, make no mistake about

  394. it, it does include rules. Those that follow this way,

  395. please get this. It's like a wayward sheep that

  396. leaves a Good Shepherd. Now we know we have the Good

  397. Shepherd. I'm going to get back to that in

  398. a moment. We're going to get to that

  399. later. But a Good Shepherd tended his

  400. flock. When a sheep.

  401. Wandered away from the shepherd. The sheep was in danger.

  402. You know why? No restrictions go wherever I

  403. want to. But he was in danger.

  404. And often times a wild beast would come and kill the sheep.

  405. You know why? Because the Shepherd wasn't

  406. there to protect it. That's what happens.

  407. When you wander on your own without the Shepherd, there's no

  408. protection at all. Then Jesus.

  409. Says this in Matthew 714. Because narrow is the gate and

  410. difficult is the way that leads to life and there are few who

  411. find it OK. The King James.

  412. Version says narrow, but the word actually means this.

  413. It means press or compress. That's what it means.

  414. And the illustration of the picture is this.

  415. It's like the squeezing of grapes, right?

  416. You squeeze the grapes to get the juice.

  417. That's the compression here. That's what he's saying.

  418. Narrow is the gate and difficult meaning press or compress is the

  419. way. But there's another.

  420. Illustration to another analogy. Robertson says it like this.

  421. Robertson says that the analogy is like this, like a tight place

  422. between high rocks. Now you might remember this a

  423. long time ago when I preached on the I AM statements of Jesus and

  424. I talked about when Jesus says I am the Good Shepherd.

  425. You might remember when I said that often times keeping the

  426. same analogy of between two rocks, sometimes those sheep

  427. would be taken by the shepherd early in the morning outside of

  428. a great big pen. OK.

  429. The. Place that they had to go graze

  430. was not a great big pasture of plush grass.

  431. They had to take him up the side of a mountain oftentimes, and

  432. rocky terrain. And when they did, you know what

  433. often happened? One of those little sheep would

  434. get their legs stuck in between two rocks.

  435. Would the shepherd do? That's the difficult way.

  436. That's this difficult thing we're talking about.

  437. But you know. What the shepherd did, though,

  438. the shepherd was watching all of his sheep, and the shepherd

  439. would go and pull that leg out between those two rocks.

  440. I actually read that a shepherd worked so hard during the day

  441. watching his sheep. He wasn't just kicking back,

  442. taking a snooze. He worked so hard during the day

  443. that scholars say that they were absolutely exhausted at the end

  444. of the day. That's what the Shepherd.

  445. Does. Kind of a picture of.

  446. Another shepherd I know. It's the same word.

  447. By the way, the root word that's translated afflicted in Second

  448. Corinthians one and six, and hard pressed in 2nd Corinthians

  449. 4 and 8. Let's notice those two passages.

  450. Now if we are. Afflicted it is for your

  451. consolation and salvation which is effective for enduring the

  452. same sufferings which we also suffer, or if we are comforted,

  453. it is for our consolation and salvation.

  454. Difficult also means same root word afflicted.

  455. Here's another one. We are hard pressed on every

  456. side, yet not crushed. We are perplexed, but not in

  457. despair. You know what Paul was saying?

  458. I'm going to have some hard times, but it's not going to

  459. beat me. And I'm not going to.

  460. Quit. Paul says we're.

  461. Perplexed. But not in.

  462. Despair, the King James says. We are cast down but not

  463. destroyed. He was not going to.

  464. Be counted out. The way that leads.

  465. To life is opposite from the wide open way that the mass is

  466. trod. Barnes says it this way.

  467. It's a tight, narrow, lonely path where one travels in

  468. solitude and singularity. OK, and I know that comes with

  469. difficulty. We all understand that.

  470. Let me get specific and let me talk about the.

  471. What I was talking about. Before about.

  472. Spiritual. Crucifixion.

  473. It's a path where the cross is carried.

  474. Where the cost? Must be counted.

  475. And even. If it's necessary, it's a place

  476. where one's household may be his enemies.

  477. Matthew 10 and 36 in Luke chapter 14 and verse 27.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  478. Notice what Jesus said. Whoever does not bear his cross

  479. and come after me cannot be my disciple again.

  480. Here's the Lord being brilliant. Jesus said these words.

  481. You know what happened 24 years before this?

  482. Please get this picture. There was a man by the name of

  483. Judas of Galilee, and he was a Zealot, and he led a revolt

  484. against the census for taxation purposes in Rome.

  485. You know what happened historically.

  486. You know what happened? Hundreds of Judas's followers,

  487. not Judas Iscariot, but hundreds of his followers, were executed

  488. and crucified on a Roman cross. So what did they?

  489. Understand 24 years later, because that happened in 86.

  490. What did everybody understand that was listening to Jesus when

  491. he spoke these words in Luke 14 and 27 when he said bear his

  492. cross, they would have known this very important fact.

  493. Crosses are for dying. They would have known that.

  494. Crosses are for. Dying.

  495. OK, Whose death? Our death.

  496. My death. Everybody.

  497. Everyone's death. Now how do we do?

  498. That Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice on the cross for our

  499. sins. But how is it that I bear my

  500. cross? How do I do that?

  501. How do I do that? Two ways.

  502. Here we go. We do that by dying to sin, and

  503. that's at baptism. Remember, crosses are for dying.

  504. Number one. We do that by dying to sin.

  505. That's at baptism. But it doesn't stop there when

  506. we died of the world with our life.

  507. And we separate. Our life and we live a Christian

  508. life. That's not a life of sin.

  509. You know, that's actually. Beautifully illustrated before

  510. this passage. In this passage and in the one

  511. before, because in verse 26 Jesus says this, if anyone comes

  512. to me in this passage, he says and comes after me.

  513. I like what Caldwell said. He explains this subtle

  514. difference. He said this coming to Jesus

  515. suggests the establishment of relationship and that's it,

  516. Baptism. That's it.

  517. Baptism when we die to sin. But I like this.

  518. Here, let's not brush past this. Let's look at that right there,

  519. Relationship I. Have made a.

  520. Determination in my mind that I'm going to spend the rest of

  521. my life trying to explain to people.

  522. From a scriptural. Standpoint The importance of

  523. having the proper relationship with the Lord.

  524. And don't. Minimize the statement or reject

  525. the statement if somebody says the only thing that matters is

  526. having a relationship with Jesus.

  527. Because that's true. The question.

  528. Is not that. The question is, how do you

  529. actually have one? You can't do it on.

  530. Your own, You have one by being baptized for their mission of

  531. your sins and living a Christian life and following the Master.

  532. That's how you have one. A relationship.

  533. OK, so the idea of coming to Jesus suggests the establishment

  534. of a relationship. But notice in this passage

  535. coming after me suggests the continuing of that relationship.

  536. Even though it may be. Faced with persecution in

  537. difficult times. And because of all.

  538. Of those things. Jesus says.

  539. There are few who find it. Meaning there are a.

  540. Few that choose it. The word find according to fair

  541. means to come upon, to hit upon, to meet with, to find something

  542. that's sought. In other words, we're talking

  543. about a choice. My question is this.

  544. OK, find what Jesus says. Few there be that find it what

  545. we want to do. We'll stay in the context of

  546. what he said, because this is really the general popular

  547. interpretation. Well, few.

  548. That be that. Find heaven.

  549. In other words, only a few of us are going to heaven, and we're

  550. the few. So everybody, what did he say in

  551. context? Few there be that find it.

  552. What's the IT the difficult way that leads to life?

  553. Because that's a. Choice.

  554. That's a choice, you know. The narrow.

  555. Path is wide enough for all Christians though.

  556. All of us. It's wide enough.

  557. For all Christians, if we do, what if we follow the Lord our

  558. shepherd, single file on one narrow path?

  559. I thought about this this week. I was driving down the road and

  560. I thought I remembered back in the 70s.

  561. Growing up on a ranch. Was the greatest life for a kid,

  562. having horses and cattle and dogs, Greatest life for a kid?

  563. I didn't need anything. I didn't.

  564. We didn't have. One of that Nintendo Wii didn't

  565. have any of that or Xbox or we didn't do any of that.

  566. None of that. That's back in the days, eight

  567. track. Yeah, didn't have any headphones

  568. or nothing like that or OK, So what we had is we had we had to

  569. go outside and do stuff. It was the greatest life.

  570. We had a dude ranch in Ojai. We had a hundred horses at one

  571. time. People would.

  572. Come from all over and they would pay money to go on a trail

  573. ride up through the mountains of our property and there was a

  574. leader, a guide out in the front.

  575. And there was one that. Always was in the tail, like the

  576. caboose in the back of a train and would be in the very back.

  577. Do you know that every one of our horses were so trained you

  578. could drop the reins and we'd get these city folk that come

  579. from all over, man, they'd be scared to death just holding the

  580. horn like this, thinking they're really doing something.

  581. And those horses, you could take the bridle off of them and they

  582. would just walk straight after the horse that's in front of

  583. them all the way around on that entire trail.

  584. That is the picture of the sheep which we are following our

  585. shepherd. And he's leading us.

  586. Straight to heaven. You know what happens?

  587. Though if one of those horses peeled off, another one would

  588. peel off behind it. So it's kind of like.

  589. This let's be like the Apostle Paul.

  590. May I just say this too? I may have a tiny bit of

  591. influence with you. I don't know, Maybe I got a

  592. little. But if I got any.

  593. At all. Only follow me if I follow

  594. Jesus. Like Paul says, follow me as I

  595. follow Christ. What happens is sometimes people

  596. are on the path and one guy decides to go off the

  597. reservation and peel off and look at the damage.

  598. People follow. Got to get back on the path and

  599. follow the Master, the Shepherd. That's the path that the Good

  600. Shepherd leads his followers with love.

  601. I'm going to share with you a story.

  602. Maybe you've heard it's a very old story.

  603. Long time. Ago, there was an old preacher

  604. and he was celebrating his 50th year of ordination.

  605. And he called up the. Famous actor Richard Burton.

  606. And Richard Burton. Had had a lot of success and a

  607. lot of experience even as a Shakespearean actor.

  608. He was a wonderful orator and the preacher said I want you to

  609. come to my 50th celebration of my ordination and when you do, I

  610. would love it. If you recited.

  611. The 23rd Psalm with all of your oratory skill.

  612. Richard Burton said. Sure, I'll do it on one

  613. condition. He said preacher.

  614. When I'm done, you do the same. And he said, OK, there was a

  615. huge. Crowd in that auditorium.

  616. And Richard Burton. Got up and with oratory skill he

  617. absolutely beautifully recited the 23rd Psalm without flaw and

  618. people stood and applauded. Because it was.

  619. Beautiful. He turns to the old.

  620. Preacher, he says. Now it's your turn.

  621. And the old preacher. Just got up, he had no speaking

  622. skill. But from his.

  623. Heart He recited the 23rd Psalm like this.

  624. He said the Lord. Is my shepherd.

  625. And I shall. Not want He maketh me.

  626. To lie down. In green pastures.

  627. He leadeth. Me beside the still waters.

  628. He restoreth. My soul.

  629. He leadeth me. In the paths of righteousness.

  630. For his name's. Sake.

  631. Yeah, though I walk. Through the valley of the shadow

  632. of death. I will fear no.

  633. Evil. For thou art with me thy rod,

  634. and by staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before

  635. me. In the presence.

  636. Of mine enemies. Thou anointest.

  637. My head with oil, my cup runneth over, surely?

  638. Goodness. And mercy shall follow me all

  639. the days of my life. And I.

  640. Will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

  641. When he was. Finished.

  642. The crowd was dead silent. There were no.

  643. Applause. They were just tears.

  644. And as he sat. Down there was a man sitting

  645. next to Richard Burton. He leans over and he said, hey,

  646. Burton, why was it when you got up and recited the 23rd Psalm,

  647. the result was thunderous applause.

  648. But when the old preacher. Got up.

  649. They were just silently. Moved.

  650. And Burton said. Here's the difference.

  651. I know the 23rd Psalm, but that man knows the shepherd.

  652. That man knows. The Lord.

  653. You ever stop to? Consider how valuable it is to

  654. know the Shepherd. And for the Shepherd to.

  655. Know you? Back in Bible.

  656. Times when that shepherd would go to that sheepfold in the

  657. morning. There was a number.

  658. Of shepherds, and they would all have all their sheep in one

  659. great big pen. But every day.

  660. That shepherd had to go get his own sheep out.

  661. Now, I don't know about you. Sheep look all like to me.

  662. A shepherd, though, knew his sheep so well that every one of

  663. them were named. He knew him by.

  664. Name. That's how much the shepherd

  665. knew the sheep. And the sheep.

  666. Knew the Shepherd so much they knew his voice.

  667. So when the. Shepherd would come to the gate.

  668. He would call. The sheep.

  669. By name and they would come. Because they knew his voice.

  670. And that shepherd. Would have his sheep.

  671. That is our Lord. That's our Lord.

  672. Let me ask you something. Do you know the Shepherd?

  673. If you don't know the. Shepherd, nothing matters.

  674. I just. Gave you a picture of what a

  675. shepherd did. Why is Jesus?

  676. The Good Shepherd #1 he gave. His life for his sheep on

  677. Golgotha's brow. He died for the sheep.

  678. And why I love this? Because he loved his sheep.

  679. And he brings us into intimate unity with himself and with each

  680. other. You.

  681. Know what that's called? It's called having a

  682. relationship with Jesus and having a relationship in the

  683. body of Christ with each other to all because of our Good

  684. Shepherd. Can we live the?

  685. Christian life, you better believe we can.

  686. Is it going to be worth it? Absolutely.

  687. You may have some tribulation 10 days, but it's only 10 days.

  688. Jesus said I'll give you a crown of life.

  689. I love it. Jesus further said in my

  690. Father's house are many mansions.

  691. If we're not so I would have told you I go to prepare a place

  692. for you, that where I am, there you may be also.

  693. Isn't that great? The word prepare.

  694. Means reservation. I'm going to go make a

  695. reservation for you, for his people.

  696. So don't ever think in your life, no matter what goes on in

  697. your life, no matter how difficult it may be, don't ever

  698. think for one minute you're alone.

  699. You are not. You got the shepherd.

  700. I'm finished. Thank you for your kind

  701. listening. We never close.

  702. A time that we teach from the Word of God without extending an

  703. invitation. And by the way, this is how you

  704. know the shepherd. This is the only way to know the

  705. shepherd. You got to hear the Word of God.

  706. Romans 10/17 So faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word

  707. of God. Upon hearing the word of God,

  708. you got a choice to make. You got to believe it with all

  709. your heart. Hebrews 11 and 6.

  710. Without faith, it's impossible to please Him, for he who comes

  711. to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of

  712. those who diligently seek Him. Then we got to.

  713. Repent, got to change some stuff.

  714. Repent of our sins. Acts 17 and 30.

  715. Truly these times of ignorance got overlooked but now commands

  716. all men everywhere to repent. Then we must be willing to say

  717. the greatest thing we will ever say.
