  1. and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God has given

  2. us the good news. And in this, with the gospel,

  3. let us share it. So that through love and compassion,

  4. we do good works. I come to you from Tijuana,

  5. Mexico. I come to you from the Orthodox orphanage

  6. in a foreign country where we care for little

  7. boys and girls, where we bring hope, and how

  8. we're called to affirm the celebration that the

  9. hope has arrived. We affirm the celebration that

  10. God came as a child and was laying in a manger.

  11. For our salvation. And this is beautiful. So

  12. let's share it. Glorifying the Lord's name. In

  13. everything we do. Knowing that we are different.

  14. From the rest of creation. And therefore we have

  15. the responsibility. To respond appropriately.

  16. With this we. Reflect on the gospel today. With

  17. this we. Responsibly look at. How it is calling

  18. us. To not make excuses. No. Everyone's busy.

  19. We have so many belongings. But the Lord's day

  20. is here and we participate. We take advantage

  21. of the feast and share this blessing with the

  22. world. No matter if we have a piece of land we

  23. need to check on or even sometimes our relationships

  24. in our family. Might be complicated. That's no

  25. excuse. If you just got married. Okay. No. God

  26. is the most important. And as brothers and sisters

  27. in Christ. We live this truth. By participating.

  28. In the beauty of the church. And also. Possibly

  29. we might have. Some livestock. Maybe even some

  30. chickens. Okay. But just because you need to

  31. take care of your animals. doesn't mean you can't

  32. come to church and worship, okay? Because remember,

  33. yes, we have animals down in Tijuana, Mexico,

  34. on the 16 -acre ranch. We have pigs. We have

  35. troughs, food troughs. And do you know what the

  36. other name for a food trough is, by the way?

  37. Manger, okay? That's actually what a manger is,

  38. if you didn't know. If you look, it's not this

  39. nice little... Figure set. No, it's a food trough

  40. for animals. And how quickly we forget that Jesus

  41. transformed this basic vehicle for animals into

  42. the vessel that carried the bread of life. The

  43. manger. The food trough. So no excuses. No. We

  44. come and we celebrate. We open our eyes. We go

  45. out and share this. We go into the streets with

  46. zeal. We see opportunities. Lovingly we share

  47. the message of Jesus. Even if we can dream about

  48. it sometimes. We dream about sharing the beauty

  49. of God becoming man. And so man can be deified

  50. and truly approach The godliness we were meant

  51. to be. And in this, yeah, we do. We hit the pavement.

  52. It says go into the neighborhoods. You can go

  53. into maybe the streets that have not been entered

  54. into recently. As it says in the Greek, the odos.

  55. Which actually in many talks about the odos.

  56. It's a Greek word. Odos in the book of Acts.

  57. It's the way. The way. Go off the well -trodden

  58. path and share this news with everyone. And ask

  59. people, hey, are you going to celebrate Christmas?

  60. Why don't? Okay, well, happy holidays. And remember,

  61. holidays is a good thing because those are the

  62. holy days. The holidays are the holy days, and

  63. these days are holy. Do not let the world reclaim

  64. the word holiday. No, holidays are the holy days.

  65. And in this, we affirm what makes the days holy?

  66. Jesus Christ. And we do this by our actions.

  67. We do this by sharing this message. Zealously,

  68. it says actually, go out and compel the people

  69. to come in. That means you have to be a little

  70. ambitious, maybe a little assertive, and get

  71. out there. Talk about Jesus. Share it in a loving

  72. way. Be that great salesman or woman because

  73. you have the greatest thing to share. You do.

  74. It's Jesus Christ incarnate. And through this,

  75. we realize that the comfort that God has given

  76. us because he saves us no matter what happens.

  77. We just need to repent and turn to him. And knowing

  78. this, in faith, we are free. This isn't the...

  79. Chapter 5 of Galatians. Very clearly. We receive

  80. freedom. In this gift. There's so many rules.

  81. We do. We have fasting times. We have how to

  82. cross ourselves. When to cross ourselves. When

  83. to come to church. We do all these things in

  84. obedience. But this does not save us. It's very

  85. clear. We are saved through Jesus. Sacrifice.

  86. So that we can do all these things. So that we

  87. can fast with love. So that we can worship Him.

  88. So that we can help those in need. This is what

  89. we're called to do. And in this we're liberated

  90. to share this great message. We're liberated

  91. so that we can receive God into our hearts. Receive

  92. Jesus. Receive the one who sent the Lord, the

  93. Father. And we receive him when we receive the

  94. little ones. It says in chapter 9 of Mark, we

  95. are transfigured and we partake in this miracle

  96. by receiving the children. And through this,

  97. We are encouraged. Through this, we see that

  98. now is the time to live our faith. Even though

  99. it's difficult. Even though the days can be challenging.

  100. And when it is challenging, we give thanks to

  101. God. It says in James chapter 1, give thanks

    James 1 chapter mention

  102. to Him. Give thanks to Him when we have these

  103. roadblocks. Because our faith grows. We can shine.

  104. Put away the malice. Put away the evil words.

  105. It says in chapter 1 of James. And so, we can

  106. live our Orthodox faith truly and shine. Be undefiled.

  107. Be pure. And the one way it says in chapter 1

  108. of James to do this is to care for orphans and

  109. widows that come to you. I've lived over 14 years

  110. in Tijuana, Mexico with my family. Caring for

  111. little children. Living the faith, God willing.

  112. And through this, I come to you with the hope

  113. that all of us will continue to follow the Lord.

  114. Knowing that many of you have sacrificed so much.

  115. And I'm so grateful for that. Vladica, Archbishop

  116. Benjamin, being on the board for almost a decade

  117. of Project Mexico, sacrificing, coming to almost

  118. every board meeting when he was an active member.

  119. Your spiritual leader led us to serve. And in

  120. this we continue. We realize that, okay, the

  121. world is full of confusion sometimes. It is.

  122. Especially In this atmosphere of different messages.

  123. But we are given. We are given clarity. It says

  124. in the Old Testament. Okay. Deuteronomy chapter

    Deuteronomy 27 chapter mention

  125. 27. It says sit and listen. Be silent and listen.

  126. It says in chapter 27 of Deuteronomy. Listen.

  127. In your abundance. It's a great chapter. We have

  128. so much in America. And so through this, we share

  129. what we have and live the truth. And it says

  130. there, okay, a family is a husband and wife.

  131. It's beautiful. Mother and father, beautiful.

  132. Respect and honor your mother and father. The

  133. law guides us, tells us how we're supposed to

  134. live. Also, it tells us who we're supposed to

  135. marry, too, by the way. Okay? You cannot marry

  136. a sibling. Why? Because it says it in Deuteronomy.

  137. Okay? Which chapter? Which chapter? What's that?

  138. Exactly. There you go. 27. I just said it three

  139. times. I always quiz the little orphan boys because

  140. sometimes they're distracted. So it's a common

  141. practice I utilize. Chapter 27. Honor your mother

  142. and father. Also it says, okay, you cannot marry

  143. your siblings, you cannot marry your mother -in

  144. -law, you cannot marry your stepmom, and you

  145. cannot marry your pets. All right. Pretty clear,

  146. isn't it? I know. And if you were confused, read

  147. which chapter? Of what book? Excellent. And it's

  148. great. It leads us. And all those who receive

  149. the blessings of the Lord reject the curse of

  150. Satan. It proclaims care and treat appropriately

  151. in a godly manner orphans and widows. In chapter

  152. 27 of Deuteronomy. We see this and we raise up

  153. our voices to him. Knowing that Christ came.

  154. St. John the Baptist pointed to Jesus. And we

  155. see this fulfillment in the Old Testament in

  156. the book of Malachi chapter 3. And Jesus will

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  157. come back. He will come back and he'll purify

  158. the church. He will come back and he will give

  159. us the opportunity to shine in our Orthodox faith.

  160. He will reject the maladies of the world. He

  161. will reject those who are filled with lies. He

  162. will reject those who are captured by adultery

  163. and fornication and don't repent. He will come

  164. and judge. Those who practice witchcraft, by

  165. the way. It says, no sorcery for Orthodox Christians.

  166. No bueno. Okay? It isn't. Why? Because it says

  167. it. In Malachi chapter 3. And we know this. And

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  168. also he says he will come back. And judge those

  169. who do not. Care. For orphans and widows. And

  170. there will be consequences. For our actions.

  171. This is. What we lift up our eyes to. To the

  172. powerful God. The powerful God. Who comes in

  173. love. And through his love. We are saved. And

  174. through this, we are encouraged that we can arise

  175. to the occasion and fulfill the message of hope,

  176. knowing that we, as it says in Psalm 82, we are

  177. children of the Most High. Oftentimes we forget

  178. this. Our Father, who are in heaven. We say that

  179. all the time. But it's our Father, okay? Really.

  180. Don't forget it. Psalm 82, your children are

  181. the most high. It says clearly. And it's beautiful.

  182. It speaks in this Paschal Psalm, by the way.

  183. It's only seven verses in this Psalm. There's

  184. seven verses. This Paschal Psalm, it proclaims

  185. in the assembly of God. Small G, okay? God, big

  186. G, speaks. Speaks to us. He says, you are gods.

  187. Small g. Says in the Greek and Hebrew, use gods.

  188. You are gods. But you die. You're supposed to

  189. live forever. You're so consumed with the things

  190. of the world and the sins of the world. And we

  191. are here to bring hope. And in this, we chant

  192. this hymn during Holy Week every year. In this

  193. beautiful time. Arise, O God, and judge the earth,

  194. for you shall take all nations to your inheritance.

  195. In the Byzantine tradition, melody. It's sung

  196. the same verse in the Slavonic tradition. When

  197. is that sung, by the way? Holy, when? Holy Saturday.

  198. Okay, this Psalm 82 proclaiming that we are called

  199. to receive the divinity of God and shine. That's

  200. why we were made. And we proclaim a rise above

  201. the craziness. And in the same Psalm, Care for

  202. orphans and widows. Help the poor. There's only

  203. seven verses in the Psalms, and they choose one

  204. of the verses to emphasize our need to stretch

  205. out our hands and help. And that's what we're

  206. doing. We're helping the little kids. Little

  207. kids who don't have moms. Like these brothers

  208. who came, and they were left at their house for

  209. two weeks by themselves. Their mom never came

  210. back. Just left. And they got found by the authorities.

  211. And they brought them to us. But imagine that.

  212. Wake up every morning, waiting for your parent

  213. to come. Sounds horrible. This is what we do.

  214. We reach out to these children. We give them

  215. hope. No, you'll be loved. You can have a place

  216. to grow up. A secure place. And have a healthy

  217. family one day yourself. Isn't this? Like that

  218. young boy said to me, my mom was so bad, I never

  219. want to go back to her. Never. Even if she comes

  220. looking for me. No, I'm not going. And God is

  221. working through Orthodox Christians at the Orthodox

  222. orphanage in Tijuana. Like that boy who I mentioned

  223. last night to the group of people in this hall

  224. right here who was raised at the orphanage. Came

  225. when he was five. Has no memory. Remembrance

  226. of his parents. And he. Went to school. In Tijuana.

  227. Graduated from high school. Then went to college.

  228. In Brookline. Massachusetts. At the Orthodox

  229. College. Helena College. Yeah. For four years.

  230. He actually graduated. Met a girl. And just got

  231. married. Beautiful. Now. He works and lives.

  232. At the orphanage. Helping. new boys who come.

  233. He's a leader. It's a beautiful thing. Well,

  234. this other boy, it's a sex story. He came and

  235. he says, hey, Father Nick, just the other day,

  236. he's older now, he says, you actually saved me

  237. from prison. I was like, how did I do that? You

  238. came to me when you were five years old. He said,

  239. well, my mom was bad and she got put in jail.

  240. But in the 90s, if your mom was a criminal, she

  241. could take her kids to jail with her. So she

  242. brought her son and daughter to the prisons of

  243. Tijuana with the drug addicts, the thieves, the

  244. murderers, the rapists. And that's where they

  245. were running and growing up until the St. Innocent

  246. Orthodox Orphanage rescued the orphans from prison.

  247. It's incredible. And this is what we do. I share

  248. this with all of you because we are compelled

  249. to share the hope with the world. We are encouraged

  250. to come to Tijuana. Come for a week. Help build

  251. a home. We'll take care of you. And you'll have

  252. the best tacos on the planet. They're delicious.

  253. And through this, help. Come down and hold our

  254. little babies. They need to be held and loved.

  255. We have long -term missionaries who are serving

  256. there right now that we need your help. Collect

  257. food. If you collect 20 cases of food here, it's

  258. called Pantry Partners. That's the program with

  259. Project Mexico. We will come pick it up. An Orthodox

  260. man will bring his shipping company here for

  261. free. All you have to do is collect the 20 cases.

  262. That's all you do, and we need the food. We'll

  263. bring it down to the orphanage for free. All

  264. you have to do is collect the food. Help us do

  265. a food drive for the Orthodox orphanage. And

  266. we need your financial help, too. Last night

  267. we had a great dinner. We raised over $10 ,000

  268. just in that one night. It was beautiful, really

  269. beautiful. But our budget's big, by the way.

  270. It is. I have about another dozen young boys

  271. who need their education sponsored between the

  272. $3 ,000 to $4 ,000 a person. I need to raise

  273. money. I need to beg for collecting funds. Please

  274. consider. I know in the back there's information.

  275. I've got the poster right there. You could just

  276. put in projectmexico .org and donate right online.

  277. Or send a check -in to the address that's there.

  278. I need your help financially. Please consider

  279. giving. And most importantly, I need your prayers.

  280. I need your petitions through the Theotokos to

  281. petition her son to have mercy on us and give

  282. us strength. And in this, I need your... Dialogue

  283. with the Lord to give strength to the missionaries.

  284. Give strength to the boys that they can heal.

  285. Give strength to the Mexicans who work with those

  286. boys. Give strength to Father Nicholas and his

  287. presbytera, his matushka, that we continue year

  288. after year. And so through this, maintaining

  289. the good news, we share it with the world and

  290. glorify the name of God. of the Father, and the

  291. Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
