  1. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and

  2. of the Holy Spirit, Amen. I've heard a question

  3. asked by some. It seems quite sensible. At first,

  4. the question being, why didn't Jesus appear to

  5. more people after the resurrection? For example,

  6. make another Palm Sunday type of procession,

  7. an appearance with everybody. Wouldn't that have

  8. convinced people? Wouldn't that have presented

  9. proofs that are undeniable? Wouldn't that have

  10. established the kingdom of God on earth? Well,

  11. that is the problem, isn't it? Because the kingdom

  12. of God is not a place on earth. The kingdom of

  13. God is within. The kingdom of God does not have

  14. an earthly ruler. The kingdom of God does not

  15. have an earthly capital city. Kind of got a bureaucracy

  16. with the church a little bit. But the kingdom

  17. of God is not of this world, but that kind of

  18. kingdom would be of this world. The kingdom of

  19. God is for this world. It's located in the heart

  20. of the disciples that confess him. that live

  21. according to his commandments, that live and

  22. speak according to his name, as it says in the

  23. scriptures, his name. And Christ's appearances

  24. are never for spectacular reasons anyway, for

  25. coercing someone or forcing someone or convincing

  26. someone. Our Lord is not a show -off. He's humble.

  27. On Palm Sunday, he rode on a donkey. not a war

  28. horse. Here's the rule of the spiritual life.

  29. All attempts to coerce, manipulate, trick, force

  30. people in any way to believe in Christ are futile.

  31. Absolutely. And remember what I said a few weeks

  32. ago. The king of glory, as it says on the cross

  33. there at the top, is king because of the cross.

  34. He invites us to pick up our cross. And this

  35. is not something people want to do unless they

  36. know that sin has broken them and destroyed them.

  37. And without God, they have nothing. The Lord,

  38. this king, invites us to deny ourselves. This

  39. is not seeker -friendly on the top of things,

  40. right? It's daunting to those who think they

  41. can find their own lives in themselves. If you

  42. seek for your own life, you will lose it, Jesus

  43. says. This is daunting because we only find ourselves

  44. in Christ. And love for Jesus Christ is given

  45. birth... By being near him. Whether you understand

  46. anything about him or not. To be near him. Believing

  47. the words of life. Love, anyway, it's never won

  48. over by spectacle. That's just being impressed.

  49. And that wears off. That wears off. Today is

  50. Thomas Sunday. It's the day... in which Christ

  51. appears a week later, that's why it's today,

  52. after the resurrection, to the apostles who are

  53. gathered in the upper room. They're joyful they

  54. have seen the Lord. Thomas doesn't believe them.

  55. Why should he? Why should he believe Peter, who

  56. denied the Lord? They knew by then that's what

  57. happened. Why should he believe the women? Nobody

  58. believed them, coming back from the tomb that

  59. was empty. Why should he believe anyone? He was

  60. sensible. And Jesus invites him to come closer,

  61. right? And he says, blessed are those who have

  62. not seen, but they believe. It's as if Christ

  63. is saying, today I present myself to you, Thomas,

  64. and the apostles, living. But from now on, for

  65. everyone else, It will be the kingdom itself.

  66. The kingdom is Christ. The kingdom is God. The

  67. kingdom is the church itself. That will make

  68. me present. From now on, it's as if Jesus is

  69. saying, whenever and wherever you gather together

  70. in my name, you will be living. You will be a

  71. living image of me. Of course, what is meant

  72. by this is more than Many people think the word

  73. church means. We mean the living, glorified body

  74. of Christ where sins are forgiven, where the

  75. good news is preached, where burdens are set

  76. down, where divine food is offered, where we

  77. have fellowship with the saints and the apostles

  78. and the mother of God and each other. God is

  79. in his kingdom and the kingdom is in God. The

  80. kingdom is the body of God, the body of the church.

  81. The body of Christ. It's as if Christ is saying,

  82. I have found a way to keep you from falling away

  83. from me. Unless, of course, you deliberately

  84. choose that. It's as if Christ is saying, in

  85. my wisdom, in my infinite love, I have found

  86. the perfect way, which is also the most human

  87. way, and the easiest way for you to love me and

  88. to possess me. It's as if Christ is saying, when

  89. you gather together in my name, when you join

  90. together for worship in this life -giving assembly,

  91. I live in you. I become you. You become my flesh

  92. and my blood. Do you remember Jesus said to the

  93. apostles, it's important for you that I go away.

  94. For if I don't go away, the Holy Spirit won't

  95. come. But if I go away, the Holy Spirit comes

  96. and he makes Christ present everywhere. This

  97. is what Jesus is saying. In other words, if Jesus

  98. said, because you cling so closely to the earth

  99. and are not willing to be raised up from there.

  100. You are not capable of becoming living revelations

  101. of God, the image of God as I made you. It's

  102. as if Jesus is saying, that's why I stoop down

  103. and I humble myself and become as you are. There

  104. I am in the midst of you. Tell me then, Jesus

  105. says, what more can I do for you? How low shall

  106. I bend? How close shall I come to you? How deeply

  107. shall I enter into your life you're being? Tell

  108. me. In order to touch me, Jesus says, you don't

  109. even have to stretch out your hand. You gather

  110. together. And this, each one of us, and as our

  111. community becomes the living witness of the kingdom

  112. of God, the living witness of the resurrection,

  113. and blessed are those who see it then and believe.

  114. Because it's authentic and true. This means,

  115. brothers and sisters, it's not so much important

  116. how we feel when we receive communion. What's

  117. most important is how we prepare for it and how

  118. we act later. We become witnesses of something.

  119. Will it be authentic according to what Christ

  120. has given? His flesh and blood, his body, where

  121. people seeing you and seeing us will say, Christ

  122. did rise. That's why we sing, having beheld the

  123. resurrection of Christ, let us worship the holy

  124. Lord Jesus. We don't sing, having believed in

  125. the resurrection of Christ. No, we see through

  126. a glass darkly. But then we will see clearly

  127. that this room, this holy place, This temple

  128. is filled with the angels of God, is filled with

  129. the worship of God, is filled with those who

  130. are waiting for the resurrection, who worship

  131. the resurrected one. Blessed are those who believe

  132. without seeing. Christ is risen.
