  1. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and

  2. of the Holy Spirit, glory to Jesus Christ. There's

  3. a hymn that we sing at the service of Great Compline

  4. during Lent, especially the first week we know

  5. of it. It says something like, O Lord of hosts,

  6. be with us. for in adversity we have no other

  7. help but thee. O Lord of hosts, have mercy on

  8. us. This is a prayer that God be with us, that

  9. our Lord Jesus Christ be with us as we bear our

  10. crosses, as we go to work, as we take care of

  11. our family, as we pray in the morning and the

  12. evening, as we prepare for Holy Communion. We

  13. come to church. That we want God to be with us.

  14. That we can't exist without God for the one thing

  15. he created us out of non -existence. And in all

  16. our troubles and our joys, we want the Lord to

  17. be with us. And we've spent the last... Five

  18. Sundays. The five Sundays of Lent. We're at the

  19. fifth and final Sunday of Lent. We've spent the

  20. last five Sundays contemplating how to be closer

  21. to the Lord so that he can be with us. How to

  22. move things out of our life that are not essential.

  23. That are obstacles to loving God. That are obstacles

  24. to being with the Lord. Or let's say, obstacles

  25. to the Lord being with us. Because he's always

  26. with us. He's always with us. You have been baptized.

  27. You've been anointed. But now, after all these

  28. five weeks, the church wants us to turn our attention,

  29. and it's a subtle change. From this idea, O Lord

  30. of hosts, be with us. For in adversity we have

  31. no other help but Thee. That's always true. It

  32. always will be true. But the church now wants

  33. us to turn our attention to another way of approaching

  34. the whole thing. So it gives us these two very

  35. interesting Gospels. To me, are the best of all

  36. of Lent. These two Gospels. The one from Mark,

  37. the third time the Lord is telling his disciples

  38. what's going to happen. And the one from Luke,

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  39. chapter 7, in honor of this great saint, Mary

  40. of Egypt, whose icon is in the middle of our

  41. church, whose fresco is over there, so appropriately

  42. by the confession stance, and she is the model

  43. of repentance. And so we have these two amazing

  44. accounts. We can only look at one. We'd be here

  45. all day. I'd love to talk about both of them

  46. and the epistles, but let us focus our minds

  47. on the gospel from Mark because it's not about

  48. the apostles, right? They are seated in glory,

  49. not at the Lord's right and left hand. That's

  50. the Theotokos. and John the Baptist. If you need

  51. an illustration, just look right there. No, but

  52. they're seated in glory in the divine council.

  53. The gospel story is about us. Let's look at it

  54. very briefly. This is chapter 10 of the gospel

    Isaiah 10 chapter mention

  55. of St. Mark. Jesus has put his face to Jerusalem,

  56. and the disciples have three Responses, the gospel

  57. says. They were amazed. They were afraid. And

  58. they were confused. Sounds like us. They were

  59. on the road going up to Jerusalem. Jesus was

  60. going before them, and they were amazed. Why

  61. were they amazed? Because they knew Jesus has

  62. already told them twice what would await him

  63. in Jerusalem. He'd be arrested and crucified.

  64. Peter already tried to stop this. He said, this

  65. is not what the Messiah does. And Jesus, do you

  66. remember what he said to Peter? Get behind me,

  67. Satan. That's thinking the ways of man. This

  68. is the way of God. It has to be this way. And

  69. they followed as Jesus led the way. And that's

  70. unusual. For the master to lead the way? No,

  71. the disciple walks first. Jesus was walking before

  72. them. And it says they were afraid because now

  73. they knew. Amazed and afraid. Then he took them

  74. to the side, all 12. And he told them for the

  75. third time what would occur. We're going to Jerusalem.

  76. The Son of Man, he calls himself the Son of Man

  77. here. Why? Because the prophet Daniel had identified

  78. the Messiah, the one, the Ancient of Days, the

  79. one who would come with glory in the name of

  80. the Father as the Son of Man. And Jesus is saying,

  81. That's how he refers to himself. The son of man

  82. will be betrayed to the chief priest. And they're

  83. thinking, betrayed? Betrayed by who? Who will

  84. betray him? We wouldn't betray him. And they

  85. will condemn him to death and deliver him to

  86. the Gentiles, that is the Romans, who have the

  87. authority to impose the death sentence. The Romans

  88. knew how to kill a slave or troublemaker on the

  89. cross. There was simply no question what would

  90. happen. And they will mock him. Brothers and

  91. sisters, when you hear that in the gospel, that

  92. Jesus, our Savior, the compassionate and loving

  93. God, will be mocked and spit upon? Doesn't that

  94. just tear your heart? This terrible thing that

  95. someone would do to someone else, but particularly

  96. our Lord and God and Savior. And then he said

  97. to them, and the third day he will arise. Apparently,

  98. two of the apostles, disciples, let's say at

  99. this point, two of the disciples were not listening

  100. to Jesus. James and John. Well, you see James

  101. and John asleep up there at the Transfiguration.

  102. That tells you a little bit about where James

  103. and John were at that point in their life. They

  104. couldn't really handle it. They weren't paying

  105. attention. And remember the account, James and

  106. John, they go to this town and the people don't

  107. listen to Jesus. They reject him. And James and

  108. John come to Jesus and says, Lord, shall we do

  109. like Elijah and ask God to bring down fire upon

  110. them and destroy them? And Jesus says, this is

  111. not the way we do it. James and John had a sense

  112. of entitlement, I think. They were very modern

  113. people. God owes us something. But Jesus is telling

  114. us something here. And this gospel is not just,

  115. well... let's say it's directed towards our catechumens,

  116. but not just the catechumens. Why? Jesus says

  117. to James and John, after they say, look, we want

  118. you to do something for us. Well, he's the master.

  119. Is that really the way we come to Jesus? Lord,

  120. I want you to do something for me. No, we come

  121. to Jesus like the woman in the other gospel,

  122. pouring out our tears on his feet, bringing something.

  123. Precious our life to him. And pouring that out.

  124. That's what servants of God do. Like that woman.

  125. She was a prostitute. And the Lord forgave. That's

  126. what we're like. That's why we come. That's why

  127. we pray. That's why we make our offerings. That's

  128. why we make our financial offerings. That's why

  129. we give to the poor. We want to serve God in

  130. the best way we can. That's why we try to love

  131. our neighbor and forgive. James and John, having

  132. a sense of entitlement, are asking Jesus to do

  133. something big. Right and left hand, Lord. We

  134. want to be there in your glory. And Jesus corrects

  135. them, but so gently, doesn't he? That's the way

  136. he is with us too. Does he ever slam you down?

  137. Does he ever pull you by your hair? Does he ever

  138. berate you? No. Our Lord waits for us. He will

  139. never... force us he gives us every situation

  140. so that we can flourish and many of those situations

  141. we don't like because we have to grow into them

  142. we have to struggle Jesus says to James and John

  143. and he says this to you my brothers and sisters

  144. catechumens especially are you able to drink

  145. the cup that I drink from think of what we do

  146. in just a little while to prepare for Holy Communion.

  147. Are you able to be baptized with the baptism

  148. that I will be baptized with? And he means the

  149. cup of the cross and suffering and the baptism

  150. of death. Baptism is a passage. It's a Passover.

  151. It's the Pascha. It's from death to life. It's

  152. the last chance for you catechumens to say, no,

  153. Lord. I think I'll wait on that. I'm not ready

  154. to take that cup. Or it's your chance, brothers

  155. and sisters, to say, I trust you, Lord. I'm with

  156. you to the end. And the Lord knows we probably

  157. will stumble a number of times. Who was with

  158. Jesus at the end? One. And the women, the courageous

  159. women. That's what made up the church on that

  160. day. So this tells me that we've been asking

  161. God to be with us. O Lord of hosts, be with us.

  162. But today, the church is turning that a little

  163. bit and saying, no, you be with the Lord. To

  164. be with the Lord now, as we move forward to this

  165. week of poems, we remember the death of Lazarus

  166. and his rising from the dead. Many of you don't

  167. know. because you don't come up here, but there's

  168. the fresco of the raising of Lazarus from the

  169. dead. Lazarus come forth, and on that day we

  170. will be baptizing, I think, God willing, 25 of

  171. our catechumens. The Lord is asking us to be

  172. with him. That means to be here, to be praying,

  173. to be supporting one another for Holy Week, to

  174. set things aside, to offer the precious ointment

  175. of your life. It sounds extravagant to come to

  176. church twice in one day. Well, maybe you can't

  177. all do that. But certainly, we can make next

  178. week holy by being here, by following Christ,

  179. by thinking of what Jesus just said. Follow me.

  180. Can you do this baptism? Can you take this cup?

  181. Yes, Lord, I can. I'm afraid of what's ahead.

  182. I'm amazed about it all. I'm sometimes confused,

  183. but I will follow you because I love you. To

  184. our Lord, who is going to his voluntary passion

  185. for us and for our salvation, be glory with his

  186. Father and his Holy Spirit now and ever, two

  187. ages of ages. Amen.
