  1. Well, good morning, everyone. It's great to see everyone who's

  2. here today. Good to have our visitors with

  3. us. And we want you to know that

  4. you're welcome anytime you can be here.

  5. We are continuing through a study in First John this

  6. morning. So if you want to flip open your

  7. Bibles, we'll be in Chapter 5 of First John finishing up this

  8. letter and this final sermon. This will be lesson #8 as we

  9. cover this topics of guaranteed an answer and the sin that leads

  10. to death. It has been a great study to

  11. walk through this and I appreciate you being willing to

  12. listen to a young buck like me. Many of you have way more

  13. knowledge and wisdom than me. So as I present God's word, I

  14. appreciate you being willing to hear it and I continue to ask

  15. that you will show me how to apply it in your continued

  16. example and your wisdom as you show me the way.

  17. As I'm a young Christian, I get to stand up here and and teach

  18. from God's word, but you are providing such a great example

  19. for me. So we have things to learn today

  20. and I have to still learn how to apply them because they're

  21. always challenging in a good way.

  22. So first John chapter 5, Part 2, we're going to pick up in verse

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  23. 9. We finished up after verse 9,

  24. but let's get ourselves a running start here.

  25. From where he was writing, it says if we receive the witness

  26. of men, the witness of God is greater.

  27. For this is the witness of God which he has testified of his

  28. Son. So he's trying to convince them

  29. of why they need to trust and how faith that Jesus came and

  30. did what he did, not to follow the Gnostic teachings that he

  31. really wasn't who he said he was.

  32. And maybe their faith isn't what they think it is.

  33. He said, no, you need to believe God's witness because if you're

  34. going to take the witness of two or three as it was in the Old

  35. Testament, two or three, three witnesses could establish a

  36. claim. He says, if you believe the

  37. witness of men, God's witnesses much greater.

  38. He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself.

  39. So we are one of the witnesses. We can testify to the truth of

  40. the gospel. He who does not believe God has

  41. made him a liar, because he does not believe the testimony that

  42. God has given of his Son. Verse 11 And this is the

  43. testimony that God has given us eternal life and this life is in

  44. His Son. He who has the Son has life.

  45. Don't forget that verse. That's going to be important

  46. later. He who has the Son has life.

  47. He who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

  48. These things I've written to you who believe in the name of the

  49. Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life and

  50. that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

  51. So what's implied there? That you can believe in God and

  52. you can have faith in Him, but that you can not be sure that

  53. you have eternal life? We've already talked about that.

  54. We've been over assurance, but it's possible to not have that

  55. assurance, and it's also possible that we don't continue

  56. to believe. That's why He has to encourage

  57. them. That's why he's writing this,

  58. and that's why we need to hold on to our faith and not drift.

  59. So that's where we left off last time, and we're going to pick up

  60. with the same flow of thought beginning in verse 14.

  61. So our context here is so far we have confidence established in

  62. what He said in verse one. We know that we have Him because

  63. you believe in the name of the Son of God.

  64. That disestablishes confidence #2 we establish confidence

  65. because we have belief or because we obey His commands.

  66. He said that's how you know you're in Him when you follow

  67. his commands. So we have faith, confidence

  68. established in these things and he says it's like I'm missing a

  69. slide, where'd it go? So we have confidence in our

  70. belief, confidence in that we obey his commands.

  71. We have confidence from the Holy Spirit that he is his witness.

  72. We have confidence from our own witness.

  73. We have confidence from the apostles witness.

  74. He's been building a case for confidence in him.

  75. And so he says now this is the confidence that we have in him,

  76. that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears

  77. us. All of these things He laid

  78. before the apostles, their own experience, the waters that were

  79. testifying to Jesus, his baptism and his life, his ministry, the

  80. blood he shed, the Holy Spirit. All these things give us

  81. confidence. And that confidence allows us to

  82. know that when we talk to God, if we ask him anything according

  83. to his will, he hears us. That is a bold statement.

  84. And you know, it's easy with prayer to start to lose

  85. confidence in it. Why?

  86. Because we're talking to someone we can't see, sometimes the

  87. answer is delayed, or maybe the answer is no and we don't see a

  88. physical checklist in front of us.

  89. Of all the things that God has answered yes or no, sometimes

  90. we're just asking. There's no poof.

  91. There is no glimmer in the sky. There's just a prayer that gets

  92. left and then we walk away. Prayer by nature is easy to lose

  93. confidence in. But he says here we do have

  94. confidence that we ask anything according to His will.

  95. This is going to be important. God does not ignore prayers, He

  96. says. And if that word if is, as I

  97. understand, better translated since and since we know that He

  98. hears us whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions

  99. that we have asked of Him. So because we know that he hears

  100. us because we're asking things that are in his name.

  101. What does it mean to ask things that are according to his will

  102. or in his name? It means what are his goals?

  103. We're praying about those things.

  104. What is his purpose? We're praying about those things

  105. and we can align ourselves with God's purpose to the point that

  106. there were things that we want are also the things that he

  107. wants. Let's look at some examples.

  108. James chapter 4 verse 3 says you ask and you do not receive

    James 4:3

  109. because you ask a miss that you may spend it on your pleasures.

  110. When you and I get an instinct to pray for something, we just

  111. need to investigate it a little bit.

  112. We need to take it a little bit further and say OK, why do I

  113. want this? Does it align with God and His

  114. desires? And if it does, great, go for

  115. it. But sometimes we can ask things

  116. and maybe they're good things, but we're asking it for a

  117. selfish reason. He says you're asking it so that

  118. you can spend it on your pleasures.

  119. Solomon, I think of his example in First Kings chapter 3.

    1 Kings 3 chapter mention

  120. It says now Solomon made a treaty with Pharaoh, king of

  121. Egypt and married Pharaoh's daughter.

  122. Then he brought, then he brought her to the city, brought her to

  123. the city of David until he had finished building his own house

  124. and the House of the Lord and the wall around Jerusalem.

  125. Solomon is taking over the Kingdom from his father David

  126. and he's establishing, he's married another influential high

  127. up person. And so he's he's setting up his

  128. life as the leader of this great nation.

  129. Verse 2. Meanwhile, the people sacrificed

  130. at the high places because there was no house built for the name

  131. of the Lord until those days. Basically, there were other

  132. locations set up for worship that were not prescribed, and

  133. Solomon loved the Lord walking in the statutes of his father

  134. David, except that he sacrificed and burned incense at the high

  135. places. Side note, as we're looking at

  136. Solomon real quick, there was a way that he loved the Lord, but

  137. he wasn't fully following a pattern that was set aside.

  138. And the Bible makes a point to note that.

  139. The Bible makes a point to note this error of worshiping in the

  140. high places. Verse 4.

  141. Now the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was

  142. the great high place. Solomon offered 1000 burnt

  143. offerings on that altar at Gibeon.

  144. The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night.

  145. And God said, ask what shall I give you?

  146. And Solomon said, You have shown great mercy to your servant

  147. David, my father, because he walked before you in truth and

  148. righteousness and uprightness of heart with you.

  149. You have continued this great kindness for him, and you have

  150. given his his, and you have given him a son to sit on his

  151. throne as it is this day. Now, O Lord, my God, you've made

  152. your servant king instead of my father David.

  153. But I'm a little child. I don't know how to go out or

  154. how to come in. And your servant is in the midst

  155. of your people whom you have chosen, a great people too

  156. numerous to be numbered or counted.

  157. Therefore give your servant an understanding heart to judge

  158. your people, that I may discern between good and evil.

  159. For who is able to judge this great people of yours?

  160. The speech please the Lord that Solomon asked this thing.

  161. Then God said to him, Because you've asked this thing and have

  162. not asked for long life for yourself, nor have you asked for

  163. riches for yourself, nor have you asked the life of your

  164. enemies, but I've asked for yourself understanding to

  165. discern justice. Behold, I have done according to

  166. your word. See, I have given you a wise and

  167. understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like

  168. you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you.

  169. And I have also given you what you have not asked, both riches

  170. and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the

  171. kings all your days. So if you walk in my ways to

  172. keep my commandments, my statutes, and my commandments as

  173. your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.

  174. So the message is Solomon asked God for things that matter to

  175. God and to lead God's people with a purpose.

  176. The things he asked for weren't selfish things.

  177. And God responded by saying absolutely.

  178. James says ask God for wisdom and he'll give you liberally and

  179. without reproach, without making fun of you, and he'll give it to

  180. you freely. And that was God's response.

  181. But God is a good God. And he says, you know what?

  182. Because you didn't ask for the other stuff, I'm going to give

  183. you that anyway. I remember when I was a little

  184. kid, I asked my dad. I said, so trying to understand

  185. this here, If I want a new video game console, should I be asking

  186. for something else to try to get this over here?

  187. And he said, well, that's not the point.

  188. We don't, we don't try to get other things by trying to

  189. manipulate God into something that we really want over here on

  190. the side. The point is God's going to take

  191. care of us. God's going to give us what we

  192. need and often times more than we even ask for or even deserve.

  193. But we need to align with his ways first.

    1 Samuel 1:10

  194. Samuel 1 verse 10. Just one more example of this.

  195. We read of a woman named Hannah who is having a a difficult

  196. situation to say the least. In her life.

  197. She was married to a man, Al Qaeda, and that man had another

  198. wife and this man had children with the other wife and things

  199. were going well for them in that regard.

  200. But Al Qaeda really loved Hannah.

  201. So you have this kind of really strange dynamic where you've

  202. already got two spouses that's or you've already got 2 wives in

  203. the next. That's a whole problem in itself

  204. that that God did not set up for us, we were not designed to

  205. handle right. And so Elkanah loves one wife,

  206. but his other wife is giving him children.

  207. And so he's just, he's caught in the middle.

  208. Hannah's upset because she wants children more than anything.

  209. And that's the thing that she can't have.

  210. And it says she was in bitterness of soul and prayed to

  211. the Lord and wept in anguish. She wanted this so bad.

  212. It was the purpose she was looking for.

  213. It was the meaning. It was maybe even some of the

  214. social standing she wanted. It was all she wanted.

  215. And she goes on and and she's, she's going to the temple and

  216. she says, O Lord of hosts, if you will heed, if you will

  217. indeed look on the affliction of your maidservant and Remember Me

  218. and not forget your maidservant, but will give your maidservant a

  219. male child. Then I will give him to the Lord

  220. all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.

  221. I skipped through to save some time of all the suffering she

  222. was going through. She goes up to the temple and

  223. this is her prayer. And it happened as she continued

  224. praying before the Lord that Eli watched her mouth.

  225. Now Hannah spoke her spoke in her heart only.

  226. Her lips moved, but her voice was not heard.

  227. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.

  228. So Eli said to her, How long will you be drunk?

  229. Put away your wine from you. But Hannah answered and said,

  230. no, my Lord, I'm a woman of sorrowful spirit.

  231. I'm neither drunk wine, I'm neither drunk, neither wine nor

  232. intoxicating drink. But I've poured out my soul

  233. before the Lord. Do not consider your maidservant

  234. a wicked woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and

  235. grief, I've spoken until now. Hannah is hurting, Hannah is

  236. miserable, but she came to the Lord with this prayer.

  237. Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace, and the God of Israel

  238. grant your petition which you have asked of him.

  239. Then they rose early in the morning and worship before the

  240. Lord, and returned and came to the House of Rama.

  241. And al Qaeda knew his wife, and the Lord remembered her.

  242. So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah

  243. conceived and bore a son and called his name Samuel, saying,

  244. because I have asked for him from the Lord.

  245. Why did I give these examples? Because both of these people

  246. either were longing for something deeply, or maybe it's

  247. something that they were missing deeply, and they came to God

  248. with a prayer that was focused on God's goals in a good way.

  249. Hannah asked. So that she would give this son

  250. to the Lord all the days of his life.

  251. I don't know all of God's ways, but what I do know is she

  252. developed a goal that was aligned with God's and God gave

  253. it to her. And the message for you and me

  254. is from first John the same. If we ask anything according to

  255. His will, He hears us. So may we search for things that

  256. align with God's will, Maybe look for those things because

  257. often times you're going to get a feeling of something you want,

  258. but you're going to have to search to find, OK, how can I

  259. use this? How can I ask this in a way

  260. that's going to be not just for me?

  261. And maybe you've stopped hoping for things all together.

  262. Maybe you feel like when we started this, when we said

  263. prayer can be kind of open-ended sometimes and we don't always

  264. have a direct understanding of what's going on.

  265. And so maybe you feel like my hands have been empty for a long

  266. time. God's rung all out of me that

  267. he's going to get and I'm going to dried up on the vine.

  268. Maybe you've gotten so used to the feeling of empty hands and

  269. maybe that's we can feel like we have empty hands even when we

  270. don't. But maybe you've got so used to

  271. that feeling that you've stopped hoping for something that is

  272. beyond what you can see right now.

  273. Satan can cripple your effort and your fruit by making you

  274. feel like you're dried up on the vine.

  275. If you think you've reached your limit, your Max, God's not going

  276. to get anything more out of your life or your potential or the

  277. things that you would ask of him.

  278. You've used all your credits, so to speak.

  279. Then Satan can cripple you. He can cripple your mind and

  280. your spirit. We need to be asking for things

  281. even that we desire. If you want something great, if

  282. you want friends, if you want better relationships, maybe a

  283. prayer. You could praise God.

  284. Please give me some strong relationships.

  285. Give me more connections. Give me more people so that I

  286. can spread your word to them or help me to build more

  287. connections in the body of Christ so I can build up other

  288. people. And maybe you need that strength

  289. for yourself, and that's fair. You need to be built up.

  290. Maybe you need more connections in here so you feel stronger.

  291. But how about thinking about a way you can build others up?

  292. Maybe there's someone else who's sitting in the same position

  293. you're in who needs the strength and he needs you to be support

  294. for them. Maybe that's the case.

  295. Maybe it's money. Maybe you want more money.

  296. Maybe you want a better income. That doesn't have to be wrong,

  297. but what are you going to use it for?

  298. God, please give me the funds so that I can give back to you, so

  299. that I can support those in need, so that I can build your

  300. purposes with that money so that I can host people and have

  301. people in my home and to show hospitality.

  302. Maybe if you want a spouse, do you just want a spouse for

  303. yourself? Or do you want a spouse so that

  304. you can raise a godly family or so that you can share and

  305. support others together? Career.

  306. Do you want a career that's good for you or good for God's

  307. Kingdom? Children, even as we learn from

  308. Hannah, can be something that could be selfish, like the other

  309. woman in the picture was holding it over her and making fun of

  310. her. But Hannah wanted them for the

  311. Lord. Even health.

  312. You know, I know of people in this room who have prayed

  313. prayers for health, not for themselves, but for their

  314. families, so their families can have what they need and so the

  315. church could continue to benefit from their service.

  316. Even health can have a selfish or a selfless request.

  317. But maybe sometimes we just need to look ahead.

  318. Maybe we need to look in ways that God could actually use us

  319. and look ahead and plan. Now just remember in this

  320. process that Jesus does say that the rain falls on the just and

  321. the unjust. So as you pray and as you see

  322. people getting things that they wanted, Jesus says good things

  323. happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people.

  324. It's not always a result of God saying I'm going to give them

  325. this because they had the right mindset.

  326. That's it's not always as simple as that.

  327. OK, so if we know, and since we know that he hears us, whatever

  328. we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of

  329. him, maybe the answer is no. Hannah's heart was shaped during

  330. the time or no or not yet was the current answer.

  331. Verse 16. Moving on, if anyone sees his

  332. brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask

  333. and he will give him life for those commit sin not leading to

  334. death. So what's the line of thought So

  335. far He's built our confidence through all the witnesses.

  336. Now we told them we have so much confidence that God will even

  337. answer our prayers. And what could be more

  338. important, what could be more valuable to us to ask God in

  339. prayer than for spiritual life? I think that's the flow of

  340. thought here. What could be more important

  341. that we could ask God for than forgiveness, than for renewal,

  342. for a spiritual life, for someone who is not right with

  343. God? He says, goes on to say there is

  344. sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray

  345. about that. All unrighteousness is sin, and

  346. there is sin not leading to death.

  347. OK, so let's back up. What is this sin that leads to

  348. death? So we know he's talking about a

  349. brother. So this is someone who is a

  350. Christian and he says this is a sin that does not lead to death,

  351. but he can be given life. So what is the context of the

  352. life here? What is the life under

  353. consideration? You know, some people think that

  354. he's talking about physical life here.

  355. There are people who say he's a brother so he can't lose his

  356. salvation because once he's a brother, then Saints do not ever

  357. lose their salvation. And so they have to impose a

  358. meaning that this is physical death.

  359. They have to say that this is a sin that will cause you to die.

  360. Don't pray about that. Well, there are things that I've

  361. seen in people's lives where if they would have kept going down

  362. that path, they would have died. Or I can read examples in the

  363. Bible, people would have died had God not provided them

  364. support. So I think for it to be physical

  365. death doesn't even make sense. We pray especially in scenarios

  366. where people's lives are in danger because that's dire.

  367. So physical life here I do not believe is the context.

  368. And as long as you believe that, hey, we, we can lose our

  369. salvation, that this next consideration is, I believe, the

  370. only logical conclusion. If we back up in verse 12, he

  371. said he who has the son has life.

  372. So the context of the life here is the life given by the Son.

  373. What life is given by the Son? Spiritual life.

  374. So he who has the Son has life. So whoever is committing a sin

  375. that does not lead to death, I believe what he's saying is if

  376. he sees a sin which does not lead to spiritual death, he will

  377. ask and he will give him life, spiritual life for those who

  378. commit sin but not leading to death.

  379. OK, so there are still other questions.

  380. So he says he will ask. So this is the person seeing the

  381. sinning brother happening. He will ask and God the capital,

  382. he will give life. OK, well, let's look at a

  383. parallel passage because I think James offers a pretty similar

  384. set of statements here. James 513 If anyone among, is

  385. anyone among you suffering, let him pray.

  386. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.

  387. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of

  388. the church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil

  389. in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will

  390. save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up.

  391. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

  392. I believe that's the sickness he's talking about.

  393. It's a sickness of sin. Confess your trespasses one

  394. another and pray for one another that you may be healed.

  395. So this process of asking for forgiveness starts with somebody

  396. confessing it and asking for help.

  397. And here's another example of that.

  398. In Acts 8, verse 19, we read of a man, Simon the sorcerer.

    Acts 8:19

  399. It says he who previously practiced sorcery in the city

  400. and astonished the people of Samaria, claiming that he was

  401. someone great. Simon was supposed to be this

  402. great sorcerer to whom they all gave heed from the least to the

  403. greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.

  404. And they heeded him, because he had astonished them with his

  405. sorceries for a long time. But when they believed Philip as

  406. he preached the things concerning the Kingdom of God

  407. and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were

  408. baptized. Then Simon himself also believed

  409. and when he was baptized he continued with Philip.

  410. I believe the Holy Spirit said those things to make sure we

  411. know he is a Christian. He believed he was baptized and

  412. what is the response after he makes a mistake?

  413. So he was amazed seeing the miracles and signs which are

  414. done. So he had this faith proven.

  415. Verse 18 goes on to say, and when Simon saw that through the

  416. laying on of the apostles hands and the Holy Spirit was given,

  417. he offered them money. I want to buy that from you.

  418. That looks good saying give me this power also that anyone on

  419. whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.

  420. OK, there's his mistake. Peter said damn your money,

  421. perish with you because you thought that the gift of God can

  422. be purchased with money. Wait, he just said he believed

  423. and he was baptized. So this man is about to perish.

  424. Well, consequence of sin, because you thought that the

  425. gift of God could be purpose with money.

  426. You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your

  427. heart is not right in the sight of God.

  428. Here is the response, and here's the recipe he gives him.

  429. Repent therefore of this, your wickedness, and pray if God

  430. perhaps, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be

  431. forgiven you. For I see that you are poisoned

  432. by bitterness and bound by iniquity.

  433. We started by talking about somebody who is in a sin leading

  434. to death. When you are poisoned, that's a

  435. sickness of sin and it's bitterness and he's bound in the

  436. iniquity. That is the state of someone who

  437. is in sin before they repent. Simon answered and said, Pray to

  438. the Lord for me that none of the things which you have spoken may

  439. come upon me. I think this is a great example

  440. of what first John is getting. At first John writes in a little

  441. bit of a different style, so it's maybe a little bit more

  442. black and white, higher level view, but that's what he's

  443. saying. Ask and you will give him life

  444. as long as the person's sin does not lead to death, because this

  445. was on its way to death. He said your money perish with

  446. you. So if there was ever a case

  447. where it was leading to death, it would have been this one.

  448. Maybe physical death. There's people in the New

  449. Testament who were smote by God for it, but also spiritual

  450. death. This was a sin that could have

  451. led to death unless he repented. I think that's the key.

  452. He says there is a sin leading to death.

  453. I do not say that you should pray about that.

  454. So why? Why should someone not pray

  455. about a sin leading to death? I believe is because there's no

  456. point. Why is there no point?

  457. Because the person doesn't want to repent.

  458. The person doesn't really care. There's no point in praying for

  459. someone who doesn't want forgiveness.

  460. There's no point in praying for someone who doesn't want to

  461. change. It's an empty prayer.

  462. You're trying and you're feeling stressed and you're anxious, but

  463. they don't care. So what's the point?

  464. I believe that's what he's saying here.

  465. I do not say that he should pray about that.

  466. So I believe the sin that leads to death is a sin that you will

  467. not repent of. Now, someone, some might say

  468. this is the sin of unbelief. There is.

  469. I think there's a way to connect these things to where if you

  470. don't believe, then you're not going to repent.

  471. So they're all kind of connected when you start to think about it

  472. that way. Hebrews 10 verse 26 supports

    Hebrews 10:26

  473. this. For if we sin willfully after we

  474. have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer

  475. remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful

  476. expectation of judgment and firing indignation which will

  477. devour the adversaries. OK, willful sin does not have a

  478. sacrifice. Is he saying that if I make a

  479. sin that was willful that I'll never be forgiven of it?

  480. No, he's saying there is a sacrifice for a sin that you

  481. will repent of. But if you're just going to keep

  482. on going, there's no forgiveness for that.

  483. There is a way to be forgiven for things that you'll be

  484. repented of. There is no way to be forgiven

  485. for things that you don't want to change.

  486. I think that's pretty common sense in our relationships.

  487. If a spouse is committing a an error that the other one is

  488. saying this is wrong, you need to stop and they won't change.

  489. There's no way to fix that. There's no way to fix something

  490. that someone does not want to fix.

  491. Now, if they do change from that willful sin, it can be fixed.

  492. We repented of and changed, but in the moment and in the time

  493. that is willful and the time that they don't want to give it

  494. up, there's nothing for that. Now, we do know that we still

  495. make mistakes. First, John one verse eight and

  496. eight through 10 says that we've we've had if we say we have no

  497. sin, we're a liar. So that's not the case.

  498. It's not that you never sin. It's not that you would never

  499. make mistakes. Verse 17, he says all

  500. unrighteousness is sin and there is sin not leading to death.

  501. I think this statement even proves more clearly that he's

  502. not saying it's this specific sin that leads to death.

  503. Like there's some like type of sin that will lead you to death

  504. unlike any others. I think he clarifies right here.

  505. He says all unrighteousness is sin.

  506. He's putting it under the same scope, the same bag, but there

  507. is a sin that does not lead to death.

  508. The sin that someone is willing to change.

  509. From verse 18, we know that whoever is born of God does not

  510. sin. OK, let's continue to talk about

  511. the verb tense. I know we said this before,

  512. you've heard it before. Does not sin is talking about

  513. the present active. It's a willful thing.

  514. The present active is this person does not continue to sin

  515. the same way. Now, it doesn't mean you don't

  516. continue to mess up. It means you're not just

  517. floating in the river cruising through this sin that you're

  518. happy to be doing and happy to be living in it is the present

  519. active. Whoever born of God does not

  520. continue to live in their sin is what he's saying.

  521. But he who has been born of God keeps himself and the wicked 1

  522. does not touch him. So as I understand some people

  523. translate this maybe in a little bit of a different way, but I

  524. think they both are true statements.

  525. So I'll show you both just just for getting the whole

  526. perspective potentially. So he who has been born of God

  527. keeps himself. If I am a child of God, and if

  528. God is really living in me, I will continue to keep myself and

  529. Him. I believe that's true 100%.

  530. And the Wicked 1 does not touch him.

  531. If I stay out of the realm of the devil, and if I stay out of

  532. the area where He has authority and He has power over me, He

  533. can't touch me. Some people translate this

  534. though. They say that he who is born of

  535. God, that's supposed to say he who is begotten of God, meaning

  536. Jesus. And he's saying that Jesus keeps

  537. Jesus is the keeper. And the wicked 1 does not touch

  538. him. Now I think there is a nice

  539. contrast there when you read it that way, because Jesus is the

  540. keeper and the devil has no power because of that.

  541. I think regardless, they're both true.

  542. We stay with him. He keeps us safe.

  543. Both are true. Praise God.

  544. Someone said it this way. The Christian who sets his mind

  545. to refrain from sin and puts his trust totally in the keeping

  546. power of Christ. Remember, trust me the

  547. obedience. I can't say I trust God if I

  548. don't obey him and puts his trust totally in the keeping

  549. power of Christ is free from the grasp of the devil.

  550. Satan has no power over us that we do not give him finishing up,

  551. we know that we are of God. He's going to end this this book

  552. with a couple statements of confirmation and of things that

  553. we know and can be certain of. He says we know that we are of

  554. God and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked

  555. one. Some might say you're arrogant

  556. for saying that somebody's right and the person who's right has

  557. to be confident in that. That's not arrogance, that's

  558. reality. God said it.

  559. There is a line dividing those who are of God and those who are

  560. of the wicked. 1 He goes on to say, and we know another

  561. statement of sure affirmation, that the Son of God has come.

  562. He's already told them. Those Gnostics who said Jesus

  563. didn't really come in the flesh, He was here for a little bit

  564. then popped out of here before he really got into suffering.

  565. He says, no, we know that the Son of God has come and the

  566. verbiage he's using is he's here now and we continue to enjoy the

  567. benefits of that. We know that the Son of God has

  568. come and has given us an understanding.

  569. Those Gnostics who claimed they had a special knowledge from

  570. God, No, the Son of God came. He taught us and we have an

  571. understanding. You don't have to wonder whether

  572. it's true or not. Has given us an understanding

  573. that we may know him who is true.

  574. The writer started this whole thing by saying I'm testifying

  575. to you. If someone that we saw, we

  576. heard, we touched, and now I'm going to show you him so that we

  577. can all have fellowship together.

  578. We can know him who's true. Even when you can't see him,

  579. when you're praying to Him, you can know that you know Him.

  580. And we are in Him who is true in His Son, Jesus Christ.

  581. This is the true God and eternal life.

  582. Don't listen to the fake stuff. The Gnostics we're teaching

  583. them. Don't listen for us to the fake

  584. stuff. People want to tell you this is

  585. the true God. He came in the form of a man.

  586. He came as a child. He died for us and he suffered.

  587. This is the true God in the last verse of this letter.

  588. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

  589. Amen To Him. They're all little children

  590. because He was guiding them. He was offering them guidance

  591. probably for a long time. And what's interesting to me is

  592. after all this, maybe this statement struck me the most out

  593. of everything he said in this chapter because we've been

  594. through how much confidence do you remember?

  595. We talked about eternity and how dangerous it is, how

  596. intimidating it is, and yet how much confidence we can have in

  597. judgement. We talked about having boldness

  598. to know that you have eternal life.

  599. We talked about how great it is and the fact that we can know

  600. him. We talked about how he wrote

  601. this so that we can have full joy and why we can have full

  602. joy. We talked about walking in the

  603. light and having boldness and judgement.

  604. All those things are so wonderful, so exciting, so

  605. awesome. There is nothing that can

  606. steamroll that. Once you have that much joy,

  607. that much security, that much hope, that much boldness as you

  608. look at death in the face, nothing can run over that unless

  609. something else takes your attention.

  610. He's gone through so much assurance and the thing he

  611. doesn't want to happen here is that all that work is missed

  612. because this wonderful thing they're looking at, they turn

  613. away and they look at something else.

  614. Remember, an idol doesn't just have to be a a Pagan God.

  615. An idol is anything that takes the place of God in our

  616. allegiance, in our time, in our first place in our heart.

  617. If anything steps into this place, it doesn't matter how

  618. good the rest of this other things are.

  619. It will cover our perspective and it will remove God from this

  620. assuring awesome place in our heart.

  621. So my challenge, even as I've been reading through this and

  622. and studying this, is to watch out that I don't put something

  623. else in front of my face that would take my attention.

  624. Because there is nothing better song we sing today.

  625. Take the world, but give me Jesus.

  626. All this joys are but a name, but is love abideth ever through

  627. eternal years the same? Take the world, but give me

  628. Jesus in his cross. My trust shall be till the

  629. clearer, brighter vision. Face to face, my Lord, I'll see.

  630. Oh, the fullness of redemption, pledge of endless life above.

  631. Oh, the height and depth of mercy.

  632. Oh, the length and breadth of love.

  633. There is nothing better than the things that we've studied, the

  634. assurance, the confidence, my prayers that we can put Him

  635. first. Do you know that you have

  636. eternal life as we've studied in this book?

  637. Do you know Him? Do you have full joy?

  638. Do you know that you walk in the light?

  639. Do you have boldness and judgement?

  640. If you don't, let's reconsider the process.

  641. Romans 10/17 Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word

  642. of God. Do you have faith?

  643. Great. Do you believe?

  644. According to Mark 16 and 16, Have you repented?

  645. Are you committing sins that lead to death because you're not

  646. willing to repent? Acts 238, have you confessed

  647. that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and there's no other name by

  648. which you can be saved on earth or on heaven?

  649. From Romans 10/9 and 10, have you been baptized for the

  650. remission of your sins? According to Mark 16 and 16,

  651. maybe you have done that. And I look at a lot of people in

  652. here that I know have done that. Our call is to now walk in the

  653. light. If you need to be started in

  654. this walk, if you need this beginning in baptism, we would

  655. be happy to take care of that today.

  656. But if you've already done that and you need to get help, you

  657. need to walk in the light. Remember, just like Simon said,

  658. just like Simon was told, you can pray for the forgiveness for

  659. your sins. But if you would like the

  660. prayers of the brethren, just like Simon said, I need you to

  661. pray with me. We'd be happy to take care of

  662. that, to get confident today as we leave this place if let's

  663. stand and sing the song of invitation.
