  1. It's wonderful to be here with all of you today and we have a

  2. wonderful crowd and we're grateful for your presence.

  3. It's good to see some folks that I haven't seen in a while, but

  4. and we even have visitors here that are among us today.

  5. And we want you to know that you are honored guest and we welcome

  6. you back every time we have an occasion to meet.

  7. I was asked to preach a sermon on the subject that is before us

  8. today and I actually have a sermon or had a sermon on this

  9. subject and I preached it about seven or eight years ago here.

  10. Now a couple of things. First of all, I make a sermon

  11. that is 7 or 8 years old is fair game if you want to re preach

  12. it. But I didn't want to do that.

  13. So just like I did when I preached on the Beatitudes a

  14. second time when I went through the Sermon on the Mount, I wrote

  15. a new sermon on an old subject. And I hope that it is edifying

  16. and encouraging to you, and I really hope that the subject

  17. matter will give you a greater appreciation for Jesus Christ

  18. and for everything that he has done for us.

  19. The title of our lesson, as it is on the screen, is Arrested in

  20. the Garden. We're going to talk about when

  21. Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane and they came and

  22. they took him away. We're going to talk about how

  23. Jesus was totally in control, that he was no man's victim.

  24. He was the ultimate victor. You've heard me say that phrase

  25. regarding the crucifixion of Jesus many, many times, but he

  26. was totally in control, even in the garden.

  27. And we want to point some of those things out today.

  28. I appreciate it so much. The choice of the songs today, I

  29. was wonderful. I even heard, you know, Tina

  30. will tell you, she reminds me and she's right, that even with

  31. my hearing aids and I can't hear Thunder most of the time.

  32. And that's really true. I can't help it, but that's

  33. really true. But I did hear this this the

  34. sound of some young voices singing today.

  35. And I got to tell you something. I got a little emotional.

  36. It got me because I thought about how much Jesus must really

  37. love that. And then I thought about when

  38. Jesus said suffer little children to come on to me and

  39. forbid them not for of such as the Kingdom of heaven.

  40. That's a wonderful thing, and when we meet and assemble in one

  41. assembly with older folks or more seasoned folks,

  42. intermediate folks, and some young folks, we all worship God

  43. together. It's a wonderful, wonderful day.

  44. Our introductory text will be taken from the book of John.

  45. The 18th chapter will begin in verse one and verse 2, and then

  46. we will make some comments. When Jesus had spoken these

  47. words, He went out with his disciples over the Brook Kidron,

  48. where there was a garden which he and his disciples entered.

  49. And Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus

  50. often met there with his disciples.

  51. Let me just say as an introduction, apart from the

  52. cross, there's nothing that brought any greater agony to any

  53. human being in all of mankind than the agony that our Lord was

  54. under in the Garden of Gethsemane on that night as He

  55. anticipated what He was going to do.

  56. That's true. As He anticipated what He was

  57. going to do for all mankind. In fact, His sorrow was so

  58. severe, His struggle was so massive, that Jesus even said

  59. these words. My soul is exceedingly sorrowful

  60. even unto death. The Bible describes it like this

  61. and says it like this. In this way.

  62. His sweat was, as it were, great drops of blood falling to the

  63. ground. He was in anguish, and he was in

  64. agony before he ever went to the cross.

  65. In Matthew, Mark, and Luke's account, it shows the suffering

  66. and the humiliation that made him suffer.

  67. But today, folks, John does not present that at all.

  68. John's account presents Jesus in majesty, the majestic power of

  69. Jesus. It presents him as something

  70. that glorifies him, Jesus in his deity.

  71. From John's account, we actually see the supremacy of Jesus

  72. Christ and is demonstrated in four features.

  73. And I got to tell you, here's feature number one, and don't be

  74. alarmed, OK? There's 4 features that we're

  75. going to talk about today. We're going to spend the

  76. majority of our time on number 1.

  77. So when we spend all this time on number one, you think, man,

  78. we got three more. Don't think I'm going to be like

  79. Paul and continue my speech until midnight.

  80. I promise I'm not going to do that.

  81. OK? We're going to spend most of our

  82. time on number one. And then two and three are very

  83. brief and #4 is actually in the conclusion we're going to spend

  84. a lot of time on #1 The feature that we find in the Garden of

  85. Gethsemane, the preeminent feature sowing the supremacy of

  86. Christ is his supreme courage. When you think about Jesus could

  87. have stopped the whole thing, you have to understand He could

  88. have put a stop to all of it. How many times are we faced with

  89. a choice and we have no choice at all?

  90. And sometimes we do something or we carry through something

  91. because really we have no choice.

  92. What if you did have a choice? The greatest things we ever do

  93. is when we make the right choice.

  94. That's the most difficult choice.

  95. Even when we have a choice to do something else, that's the

  96. greatest things that we ever can do.

  97. How about Jesus, He could have put a stop to the whole thing.

  98. How do I know that? In Matthew 26, beginning in

  99. verse 53, Jesus says or do you not think, or do you think that

  100. I cannot now pray to my Father and He will provide me with more

  101. than 12 legions of angels? And how then the then could the

  102. Scriptures be fulfilled that it must happen thus, how many was

  103. that? How many are 12 legions of

  104. angels? Well, first of all, a legion is

  105. 6000. So 6000 * 12 is 72,000 angels.

  106. Now we're going to find when they came to arrest Jesus,

  107. there's going to be a lot of guys there.

  108. A lot of people are opposed to Jesus.

  109. A lot of people there were against him, right?

  110. But they would not have stood up to more than because that's

  111. where he says more than 72,000 angels.

  112. He could have done that, but Jesus says I can't do that.

  113. Why? Because how would the Scripture

  114. be fulfilled that it must happen thus it just has to be in Johns

  115. 10 and 17. Jesus said, therefore my Father

  116. loves me because I lay down my life that I may take it again.

  117. Jesus even further said, he said no man takes my life.

  118. I my life I freely give. And by the way, that's why fast

  119. forwarding to the cross when Jesus totally in control, Jesus

  120. says it's finished, it's accomplished.

  121. I've done it. Everything you sent me to do,

  122. Father, I've done. And finally he says, Father,

  123. into your hands. I come in my spirit.

  124. And the Bible says he bowed his head.

  125. The word bowed, as you heard me say many times, is a word that

  126. is described to somebody that willfully pillows their head.

  127. That's not the posture of a victim.

  128. That's somebody that gives his life and says this, I lay it

  129. down, you sent me to do it, I've done it, it's finished, and now

  130. I'll die. Wow, I just got chills on that.

  131. That's what Jesus said, OK, He wasn't unwilling, but that

  132. doesn't mean there was no anguish.

  133. And that's evident in his prayer.

  134. When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane, he prays three times

  135. to his father. In Luke's account in Luke 22 and

  136. 42, he said, Father, if it is your will, take this cup away

  137. from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but

  138. yours be done. All right, My question to all of

  139. us is this. It's a rhetorical question.

  140. I'm going to answer it in a minute, but let me just throw it

  141. out in a general sense. What's the cup?

  142. Well, I'm going to tell you what everybody says, everybody

  143. deduces this is the cup, and I've heard it in my whole life.

  144. The cup is the cup of suffering is what most people say.

  145. And when they say or what they're suggesting, when they

  146. say the cup of suffering, they're suggesting the cup of

  147. physical suffering. In other words, what Jesus was

  148. going to have to do physically on the cross.

  149. Let me just suggest this to you, please.

  150. I'm not minimizing the pain, the awfulness of the cross.

  151. It was so horrible that even a Roman historian said that Roman

  152. soldiers, literally even, and Roman citizens shuddered to even

  153. speak about the crucifixion. It was so awful that a Roman

  154. citizen could never be crucified.

  155. In fact, it was for foreign slaves and criminals.

  156. They're the ones that got crucified.

  157. So I'm not minimizing the pain of the cross.

  158. Please don't think I'm doing that.

  159. But to say that the cup that Jesus was saying and to his

  160. Father three times, let this cup pass from me is just physical

  161. suffering that is way too easy. What is it?

  162. In fact, by the way, if you look at Fox's Book of Martyrs, you

  163. know what you find? You find a whole lot of people

  164. that were martyred for their faith.

  165. You know what they did? They went courageously to their

  166. death. Stay with me.

  167. I got a point here. They went courageously to the

  168. death. In fact, some of them, you know

  169. what they did? They went singing hymns and

  170. praying and praising God. Was Jesus less courageous than

  171. they? How about Polycarp when he's

  172. about to be burned at the stake and they said all you got to do

  173. is denounce Jesus. That's all you got to do and you

  174. will not be burned. You know what Polycarp said?

  175. You know the phrase, very ancient phrase.

  176. We all know it. Here it is 80 and six years have

  177. I served him, and he's never done me wrong.

  178. How then could I blasphemy the name of my king, the one who

  179. saved me? How about Stephen when he's

  180. being martyred for his faith? The very first one in Acts

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  181. Chapter 7, he looks up into the heavens.

  182. He says he saw Jesus standing on the right hand of God and all he

  183. has to say is Lord lay not their sin to their charge and he was

  184. executed for his faith. What about Paul who was beheaded

  185. headed What about Peter who was going to be crucified on a Roman

  186. cross? And tradition says that he said

  187. I'm not worthy to be crucified like my Lord, crucify me upside

  188. down. Was he more courageous than

  189. Jesus? Absolutely not.

  190. In fact, Peter chickened out a few times, didn't he?

  191. Jesus shows supreme courage. So what is the cup and why was

  192. he troubled in spirit? Let me take it a step further.

  193. Hebrews 12 and two, OK, looking under Jesus, the author and

  194. finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him

  195. endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the

  196. right hand of the throne of God. So that's something else we're

  197. adding here. What do we have?

  198. We have the pain of the cross. He endured it.

  199. We've got the shame of the cross.

  200. He endured that too. OK, all of those things are

  201. true. What was on the Lord's mind that

  202. was troubling Him in spirit with regards to the cup?

  203. I submit to you the cup. Please get.

  204. This is the cup of divine wrath. It is the cup of divine wrath.

  205. And that was terrifying. That was a terrifying reality.

  206. In other words, the Lord wasn't troubled because of what He was

  207. going to anticipate physically or physical suffering.

  208. He was troubled because he anticipated divine wrath from

  209. God and that is spiritual suffering.

  210. You know why He had to bear the sin of the world?

  211. He had to bear the sin of the world and that include God's

  212. divine wrath on sin. Can I say something?

  213. Now you know why God hates sin so much.

  214. Well, the obvious things, it's beneath him, He's perfect, it's

  215. ugly. Secondly, the price that was

  216. paid for it, and that is the blood of His only Son.

  217. But even stop to consider that God hates sin so much because

  218. it's the one and only thing that'll keep us from Him for

  219. eternity. And that's what He wants.

  220. The Bible says the long-suffering of God is

  221. salvation, not willing that any should perish, but that all

  222. should come to repentance. He wants everybody to go to

  223. heaven. He doesn't want that.

  224. That is His desire. How do I know that?

  225. Look at the price that he paid in order to have it.

  226. OK, so the Lord was anticipating the fact that He would have to

  227. bear the sin of the world, and therefore God's divine wrath on

  228. sin. What else?

  229. He would be alienated from his Father.

  230. You know, I'm going to tell you what that took a tremendous

  231. amount of courage to purpose in your mind to go to the cross

  232. where all of your purity would be defiled.

  233. He was perfect in every way. And by the way, that's the only

  234. reason He was the only perfect candidate to be the Lamb of God,

  235. because he was perfect in, excuse me, in every way.

  236. His purity would be violated as He bore the sin of the world and

  237. he would be abandoned by God. In Matthew 27 and 46 in about

  238. the 9th hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying Ili ili

  239. la masa bakhtani. That is my God.

  240. My God, why have you forsaken me?

  241. This is a direct quote from the book of Psalms in Psalm 22 and

  242. one my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  243. Why are you so far from helping me and my and the words in my

  244. groaning. All right, most people think and

  245. maybe it's true. I don't know when the we talk

  246. about God's turning his face, even the songs that we sing,

  247. because the Bible talks about and the Scriptures teach the

  248. concept of God turning his face. And the easy answer is this.

  249. And I know that most people say that's because God can't look on

  250. sin. And maybe that's true, but

  251. there's a lot of debate that that's not what that means.

  252. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to talk about what we

  253. actually do know for sure. What we do know for sure is

  254. exactly what the Scripture says from the book of Psalms.

  255. Notice this is what we know for sure.

  256. This is the symbolic turning the face of God away from Jesus.

  257. Why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping

  258. me and from the words of my groaning?

  259. OK, what do we know? We know this God, Jesus and the

  260. Holy Spirit have always worked together.

  261. What else do we know? They are one in purpose, they

  262. are one in unity. They are one in every aspect of

  263. what they do. But they're three separate

  264. personages in the Godhead in the very beginning in Genesis

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  265. chapter 1 and verse 26, let us make man in our image after our

  266. likeness. Who was there?

  267. God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit doing what?

  268. Working together in the entire life of Jesus in heaven and on

  269. the earth, except in this one instance, God was there side by

  270. side, if not in heaven literally, but figuratively,

  271. while Jesus walked on the earth. God was with Jesus every step of

  272. the way until now. And the reason for that is he

  273. had to do this all by himself. He had to do it all on His own.

  274. That is infinite supreme courage.

  275. He does so undaunted and without hesitation.

  276. But before we go any further, when it comes to the garden, as

  277. you've heard me say this phrase about the crucifixion, I'll say

  278. it again. Here we go.

  279. He's not trapped in the garden, He's not tricked in the garden,

  280. and He is not surprised in the garden.

  281. Let's go to John 18 and verse one.

  282. When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with his

  283. disciples over the Brook Kidron where there was a garden which

  284. he and his disciples entered. OK, this phrase right here after

  285. he had spoken these words is referring to John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  286. And if you want to know, by the way, what the Lord's Prayer is,

  287. that's the Lord's Prayer. That's the prayer the Lord

  288. prayed. OK, I know that there's another

  289. passage that people call the Lord's Prayer, but nobody, the

  290. Lord never called it the Lord's Prayer.

  291. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, so forth.

  292. OK, the Lord didn't call it that, and neither does the

  293. Scripture man calls it that. That was a prayer that Jesus

  294. gave as a model, not words to be regurgitated, but a model on how

  295. to pray before the Kingdom came. OK, if you want to know what the

  296. Lord's Prayer is, it's John 17. When He spoke those words in His

  297. prayer in John 17, what happens? He and his disciples, they left

  298. the upper room, they left the city of Jerusalem, they went

  299. down a little slope. They crossed the Brook Kidron

  300. and they went to the Mount of Olives, to the Garden of

  301. Gethsemane, and that's where they went immediately.

  302. You know, that was a place that Jesus spent a lot of evenings

  303. there. It was a place that scholars say

  304. or would refer to it like this, the closest thing the Lord ever

  305. had to a place on the earth. It was a place where he would

  306. retire at evening time. According to John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  307. It was a very familiar place, the Garden of Gethsemane.

  308. It was his custom. It was a place that he went to

  309. be close to his Father. You know, maybe you have a place

  310. like that. Maybe you have a place that you

  311. just want to go and get to a quiet place, and that's the

  312. place that you can get your mind right and you can pray to God.

  313. You know, a symbolic sense. The Bible talks about going into

  314. your closet. OK.

  315. In other words, finding your private place or some place that

  316. you want to just go and it's just you and God and you can

  317. talk to God, whatever that is for you.

  318. I don't know. Jesus had one too.

  319. It's called the Garden of Gethsemane.

  320. That's where the Lord went. OK.

  321. Sometimes though, he would go up the side of the Mount of Olives.

  322. He'd make a little turn, he'd take a little Rd. around the

  323. hill, and he'd go to a place called Bethany.

  324. And he would be there with dear friends Mary, Martha, and

  325. Lazarus. But not this night, Not this

  326. night. It was His time to go to this

  327. fatal garden. And I'm going to submit to you

  328. this. He did it on purpose.

  329. Not only that, He knew everything that was going to

  330. happen. And #3 He planned every detail

  331. that happened in it. OK?

  332. It was a place that the disciples knew about.

  333. Jesus took his disciples there with him.

  334. But do you know who else knew about that place?

  335. You know Judas, the vile betrayer.

  336. He knew it too. He knew where it was, and Jesus

  337. knew that Judas knew 2 reasons #1 Jesus knows everything.

  338. OK, that's obvious, right? But there's another reason that

  339. Jesus knew that Judas the Betrayer knew, and it's all

  340. because of an Old Testament example.

  341. An Old Testament passage that we can read about an Old Testament

  342. example in prophecy brings up an interesting point about

  343. prophecy. I'm going to be brief about

  344. this, but we'll throw it on there about prophecy because

  345. prophecy matters. But let's talk about it for just

  346. a moment. There's two kinds of prophecy.

  347. There's verbal predictive prophecy and there is typical

  348. prophecy. OK, verbal predictive prophecy

  349. is a prophecy that's verbally spoken that's going to happen or

  350. be proven or fulfilled later on. Give you an example of verbal

  351. predictive prophecy? Here's an easy one.

  352. Here's a softball toss. Here we go.

  353. For unto us a child is born. Unto us a son is given.

  354. That's Jesus verbal predictive prophecy.

  355. Jesus fulfilled that. He was born of a virgin.

  356. He did come into the world and a son, the Son of God, was given

  357. to all mankind. Great stuff.

  358. Verbal predictive prophecy. Typical prophecy is prophecy in

  359. types. That's a fancy word for a

  360. picture or an example. OK, a picture or an example in

  361. the Old Testament fulfilled with Jesus in the New Testament, for

  362. example, every Old Testament sacrifice was a picture of Jesus

  363. Christ. A prophecy of a final sacrifice

  364. would come. That is typical prophecy.

  365. All right. Also in a in a distance in a, in

  366. more than this or step from this with typical prophecy.

  367. There were also men or characters in the Old Testament

  368. who were types of Christ who by their life actually typify

  369. Jesus. Give you 3 brief quick examples.

  370. Here we go #1 How about Moses? OK, the children of Israel were

  371. in Egyptian bondage for many, many years.

  372. God sent Moses, a deliverer to deliver the children of Israel

  373. out of Egyptian bondage in life manner, Moses became a type or a

  374. picture of Jesus because guess what, all of us were in the

  375. bondage of sin and God sent Jesus to deliver us from sin.

  376. So therefore, Old Testament type, Old Testament picture

  377. Moses was a picture of Jesus. Let's move on, how about Joseph?

  378. I don't have time to go into this.

  379. It's actually a sermon all in itself, but there is over 100

  380. points of likeness in the life of Joseph and the life of Jesus.

  381. I'm just going to give you one because I don't have time.

  382. Here we go. One when Joseph was sold by his

  383. brothers and betrayed and sold by his brothers into slavery.

  384. He was sold for 20 pieces of silver, the price of a slave.

  385. When Jesus was sold and betrayed by Judas, he was also sold for

  386. the price of a slave and at that time it was 30 pieces of silver.

  387. Joseph in 100 points of likeness in his life became a type of

  388. Jesus Christ. What else?

  389. Sometimes there's even a character in an event that

  390. typify Jesus. One example would be Isaac, when

  391. God told Abraham, Abraham, take your son Isaac, the one that you

  392. love, your only son, you sound familiar.

  393. Your only son, the one you love, sound familiar.

  394. And God said, take him and take him to a place that I will tell

  395. you and offer him as a sacrifice unto me.

  396. We know the story. They leave, they leave for three

  397. days. 03 days is significant, isn't it?

  398. Three days? They leave for three days.

  399. And by the way, in Abraham's mind, Isaac was gone from the

  400. very moment that they left on that journey.

  401. You know what's going to happen three days later, Abraham, the

  402. father gets him back. You know what happened with

  403. Jesus? He was crucified, he was buried.

  404. Guess what happened? Father lost him.

  405. Three days later, God got him back.

  406. Notice, but in this instance, Isaac, who typified Christ in

  407. this one event, actually carried the wood that he would be

  408. sacrificed on. Can you imagine carrying the

  409. wood that you're going to be sacrificed on?

  410. Jesus carried the wood that he was sacrificed on to in this

  411. event. Isaac typified Jesus in that

  412. event. OK, give you another one.

  413. And that's the reason that I'm doing this is because we're

  414. getting to the connection of why everybody would have known what

  415. Judas was going to do, and Jesus knew too.

  416. And that's the character from the Old Testament, David.

  417. The Bible says that Jesus was a king like David, and David was

  418. betrayed by a familiar friend and his name was a hit.

  419. The fell Jesus was betrayed by a familiar friend and his name was

  420. Judas. Now David said the following in

  421. Psalm 41 and verse 9. Even my own familiar friend in

  422. whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel

  423. against me. I got to make this point, got to

  424. make this clarification. It is true that this statement

  425. is twofold. 2 Twofold. One, it does include Jesus.

  426. It does include as if David was speaking for the mouthpiece of

  427. Jesus in the book of Psalms, like he did many times talking

  428. about Judas. That's true, but literally and

  429. specifically, David had the same exact thing.

  430. A familiar friend who he trusted lifted up his heel against him.

  431. So from a prophetic type scenario, this is talking about

  432. a hit the film. All right, let's talk about

  433. Jesus. In John 13 and 18, Jesus said

  434. this. I do not speak concerning all of

  435. you. I know whom I've chosen, but

  436. that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

  437. He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me,

  438. and we know exactly who that is. That is Judas Iscariot.

  439. So a hit. The fell was David's closest

  440. advisor. Judas was the apostle, an

  441. apostle in the Lord's inner circle.

  442. What story am I referring to about hit the film?

  443. I'm talking about Second Samuel, chapter 15.

    2 Samuel 15 chapter mention

  444. Don't turn there, stay with me. I'll narrate it and we'll be

  445. quick. Second Samuel, chapter 15.

    2 Samuel 15 chapter mention

  446. David is king, and he's got a bad son.

  447. He's got a wicked, corrupt son. It was his third oldest son and

  448. his name was Absalom. Now I don't understand this, but

  449. Absalom had two motives and I don't get this.

  450. Number one, he wanted to kill his father.

  451. Can you imagine that killing your dad?

  452. He wanted to kill his father and he wanted to take away the

  453. Kingdom. He wanted to reign as king, get

  454. his dad out of there. Ahithophel, according to I think

  455. it's First Chronicles 27, Ahithophel was David's

  456. counselor. And the word in Hebrew, the word

  457. counselor translated in Hebrew means one who guides.

  458. So Ahithophel was supposed to be the guy that was by the David's

  459. side, the King's side, and guide him.

  460. That's when Ahithophel's job was, that's what he was supposed

  461. to do. But remember, the Bible says

  462. he's lifted up his heel against me.

  463. In other words, he's opposed. He becomes the enemy of me.

  464. OK, what do we also know about Ahithophel?

  465. He was a counselor. He was a guide, yes, but he was

  466. also the grandfather of Bathsheba.

  467. Now, I don't know if this is true and I don't know that it

  468. matters, but some people say, some scholars say that that's

  469. the reason that a hit the fell rose up against David is because

  470. David had an adulterous affair with Bathsheba.

  471. Whether that's true or not, the Bible doesn't say that.

  472. What we do know for sure, a hit the fell was David's counselor.

  473. A hit the fell was Bathsheba's grandfather.

  474. And one day he's going to join forces with the enemy, and

  475. that's Absalom. Let's talk about Absalom for

  476. just a moment. There's so much to the story we

  477. can't go into. Absalom one day goes to his

  478. father and he lies to him. He comes to David and he says to

  479. David, I want to go to Hebron and worship God.

  480. Sounds good, right? And David said, go ahead, gives

  481. his blessing. The whole point is he's lying.

  482. He's lying. When he gets to Jerusalem, he

  483. goes out and he tells everybody, he says I am now ruling over all

  484. of Israel. So here was the question, what

  485. are we going to do to get rid of David?

  486. A hit the fell who's supposed to be on David's side?

  487. A hit the fell now is going to give counsel to the opposite

  488. side and that is Absalom, second Samuel 17 and verse one that got

  489. chopped off. That's verse one.

  490. Moreover, a hit the fell said to Absalom, Now let me choose

  491. 12,000 men, and I will arise and pursue David.

  492. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? I will come upon him while he is

  493. weary and weak and make him afraid, and all the people who

  494. are with him will flee, and I will strike only the King.

  495. Doesn't that sound a little familiar?

  496. What happens with Jesus when he escaped?

  497. You know where he went, David. He left Jerusalem.

  498. He went down the slope, He crossed the Kidron, He went to

  499. the Mount of Olives with his faithful disciples or faithful

  500. followers. What did Jesus do on this fatal

  501. night? He left Jerusalem, He went down

  502. the slope, He crossed the Kidron, He went to the Mount of

  503. Olives, to the Garden of Gethsemane with his faithful

  504. followers. So Hithephel and David in that

  505. little incident become a perfect picture in the Old Testament of

  506. what is to come when the true king arrives and Judas becomes

  507. even more treacherous, treacherous than Hithephel.

  508. OK, the question is, if Jesus knew that, why did he go to the

  509. garden? Well, first of all, the garden

  510. was threefold. Here's the obvious stuff.

  511. The garden was a place of prayer, a place where He prayed

  512. to His Father. The garden was a place of rest,

  513. according to John chapter 8, that He went at in the evening

    John 8 chapter mention

  514. time, and the garden was a place of fellowship that He could have

  515. with His disciples. All of that is obvious, but all

  516. of those things are secondary, OK?

  517. The primary reason that Jesus went to Gethsemane is because He

  518. knew that Judas would be there and he knew that Judas knew

  519. Jesus would be there and He knew Judas would take the mob

  520. straight to him. Why Old Testament prophecy with

  521. Ahithophel? But not only that with

  522. verbalization, accurate verbalization.

  523. It even says he would buy or sell Jesus and buy the Potter's

  524. field. The Lord knew John 18 and verse

  525. 2, and Judas who betrayed him also knew the place, for Jesus

  526. often met there with His disciples.

  527. Jesus wanted the final betrayal to be in the garden.

  528. If the final betrayal would have happened, by the way, in

  529. Jerusalem, there would have been perhaps an insurrection, maybe

  530. even a revolution. You know why?

  531. Because there was a lot of people that hated Jesus, but

  532. there was a lot of people that love Jesus too.

  533. And with that, and with all the people that love Jesus, He

  534. healed them. He fed them, did great stuff for

  535. him, right There would have been an insurrection, maybe a fight

  536. back, a revolution. He didn't want that.

  537. You know why? Remember, he says, my life was

  538. not taken. My life I freely gave.

  539. This is voluntary, willful surrender.

  540. John 1017 and 18. We read the first verse a moment

  541. ago. Now we get into 18.

  542. Therefore my father loves me because I lay down my life that

  543. I might take it again. No one takes it from me, but I

  544. lay it down myself. I have power to lay it down.

  545. I have power to take it again. This command I have received

  546. from my father. Listen, folks, a coward would

  547. have gone any place but the garden.

  548. Matthew 26 says more stuff about it.

  549. Notice a great multitude came, and they came with swords and

  550. clubs, and they were ready for action.

  551. Can you imagine how many came? How many in John 18 and 3?

  552. Then Judas having received a detachment of troops.

  553. What is that? A detachment of troops is a

  554. Roman cohort. How many of the Roman cohort?

  555. Well, first of all, we know that by this deduction a Roman legion

  556. is 10 cohorts. Therefore 10 cohorts, which is a

  557. Roman legion was 5000 men. So 1 detachment of troops or one

  558. Roman cohort was about 500 men. Wow, 500 guys soldiers, plus the

  559. chief priests and the Pharisees and the angry mob.

  560. And Judas is out in front and they come with lanterns and

  561. torches. Now you'll remember this.

  562. This part might be a little familiar, OK?

  563. They came with lanterns and torches.

  564. Historically, during the time that this occurred, and which is

  565. during the Passover, historians say that there would have been a

  566. full moon, and that moon would have lit up the sky.

  567. In other words, you would not have needed lanterns and torches

  568. to navigate down the road and go into the Mount of Olives and the

  569. Garden of Gethsemane. You wouldn't have needed that to

  570. go from Jerusalem to that place. They took lanterns and torches

  571. because they thought they were going to have to search every

  572. nook and cranny and find Jesus because they thought he'd be

  573. hiding somewhere. Here comes 500 men, along with

  574. chief priests and Pharisees and the angry mob, and Judas is out

  575. front. Interesting.

  576. The irony. They came with lanterns and

  577. torches looking for the light of the world, and they came with

  578. weapons in search of the Prince of Peace.

  579. What a brutal misinterpretation of who the Lord was.

  580. And here comes Judas. What happens when he arrives?

  581. The other gospel accounts tell us more.

  582. Let's go to Mark, Mark 14 and 44.

  583. Now his betrayer had given them a signal saying whoever I kiss,

  584. he's the one sees him and lead him away.

  585. All right, Notice in verse 45, as soon as he had come,

  586. immediately he went up and he said to him, Rabbi, Rabbi, and

  587. he kissed him. You might look at that and say,

  588. well, what's the big deal? It just says what he said he was

  589. going to do until you look up this word kissed.

  590. This is an intensified form of the verb to kiss.

  591. He said when I kiss him, that's who it is.

  592. But this word is different, an intensified form of the verb.

  593. In other words, a fervent, continuous expression of

  594. affection, meaning He kissed him repeatedly.

  595. Wow. Then verse 4, Jesus.

  596. Therefore, knowing all things that would come upon him, He

  597. went forward. He knew.

  598. He knew what was going to happen.

  599. He's all knowing. But he also knew from prophecy

  600. too. I do not speak concerning all of

  601. you. I know whom I've chosen, but the

  602. scripture may be fulfilled. He who eats bread with me has

  603. lifted up his heel against me. This is humble, willing

  604. sacrifice. OK, it may be that the kiss came

  605. first, but I'm saying this. Nothing happened until Jesus

  606. went forward. Nothing happened until he went

  607. forward and he said this. Whom are you seeking?

  608. Who are you looking for? So and I said, this is the

  609. majority of the lesson. Now we're going to hit the next

  610. three really fast. Stay with me.

  611. I'm almost finished. Not only do we see the Lord's

  612. supreme courage in every way, but you know what else we see?

  613. We see his supreme power. We see his supreme power in the

  614. garden in chapter 18 and verse 5 of John.

  615. They answered and said Jesus of Nazareth and Jesus said to them,

  616. I am he. You might remember this, the

  617. word He by the way, this whole thing is in italics, but the

  618. word he in the original or in the Scripture in the original is

  619. not there. It is in italics in our English

  620. translations, which means it was added by the translators for

  621. clarity. In other words, in the original,

  622. it simply says this I am came to notice we see a supreme power in

  623. the next verse when he said to them, I am he or I am, they drew

  624. back and they fell to the ground.

  625. You remember this, This is not new, very brief.

  626. I got to be brief about this. Be careful when you read

  627. commentaries and the explanation that commentaries give, because

  628. sometimes a commentary can just give you what they think because

  629. they're not inspired by God. And sometimes it's better just

  630. to read the Bible and see what the Scripture says and what

  631. makes sense. Why did they fall?

  632. Commentators say, well, they were so stunned that they found

  633. him so quickly, so they tipped over and fell.

  634. Really. 500 men soldiers stunned?

  635. Come on. Other commentators say, well,

  636. one guy tripped. You've heard me say this.

  637. One guy tripped. And like Domino's, they all

  638. fell. Really.

  639. You don't think 500 soldiers knew how to stand up?

  640. Come on, why did they fall? They fell because of what he

  641. said. He was demonstrating his supreme

  642. power. He said I am because that's who

  643. He is. He's the I am.

  644. And they fell. Thirdly, you know what else we

  645. see? Not only his supreme power, Oh,

  646. we see his supreme love. Jesus anticipated the cross.

  647. He never was concerned about himself.

  648. He is always concerned about his disciples.

  649. In fact, Mark's account says that he interrupts his prayer

  650. three times to go check on his disciples in John 18 and verse

  651. 7. Notice then he asked them again,

  652. who are you seeking? And they said Jesus of Nazareth.

  653. Why did he ask them twice? The next verse Jesus answered.

  654. I've told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek me, let

  655. these go their way. Picture this because I want to

  656. show this as an example of what Jesus does for us today too.

  657. OK, you got the enemy, you got the disciples who's standing in

  658. the middle. I see some nodding your head.

  659. Yeah, you get it. Jesus, the busiest man in the

  660. world that was about to be crucified for the sins of the

  661. world. He's protecting his disciples,

  662. he said. I already told you.

  663. That's why the question was asked twice.

  664. I already told you that it's me that you're looking for.

  665. If that's all you want, then you let these go their way.

  666. You live that you leave them alone.

  667. One man put it like this, Jesus is not the kind of shepherd that

  668. rescues the sheep when he's half eaten by the wolf.

  669. No, he stood in the gap and he protected his own.

  670. How do I know, verse nine, that the saying might be fulfilled,

  671. which you spoke of? Those who you gave me, I have

  672. lost none. I believe the Lord knew they

  673. were not ready for a test like that.

  674. They would not have been able to handle it.

  675. You know, the Bible talks about that too when it comes to us,

  676. doesn't it? Paul dealt with that.

  677. There's no temptation taken you except what is common to man.

  678. But with the temptation, we're given a means of escape that

  679. we're able to bear it. In other words, the temptations

  680. that come our way are not going to be more than we're able to

  681. bear. Jesus knew they were going to

  682. not be able to bear that. It was too much.

  683. He stood in the gap and he protected them, OK, Just like he

  684. does for us today. Wow.

  685. So let me just say this, if you are a faithful child of God and

  686. you're doing your very best and you have something come your

  687. way, don't think it's too much because the Lord says, yeah, you

  688. can handle it. And not only that, I'm there

  689. with you all the way to help you through it.

  690. Also, Jesus knew that if something happened to them, they

  691. wouldn't be able to carry out their Commission to proclaim the

  692. gospel and do their work after he was gone.

  693. This is the protecting power of the shepherd.

  694. And then specifically, he protects old Peter.

  695. Here comes impulsive Peter verse 10.

  696. Then Simon Peter having a sword, drew it and struck the high

  697. priest servant and cut off his right ear.

  698. And the servant's name was Malchus.

  699. Luke's account says that Jesus grabbed that ear and he put it

  700. back on. If you look at the original

  701. language, it actually demonstrates the concept.

  702. He actually made him a new ear because by the way, if you cut

  703. off an ear, it's pretty, I don't know, mangled.

  704. I would say he made him a new ear.

  705. He protected him. Now, what was he actually doing

  706. when he said this in Matthew 26 and 52?

  707. But Jesus said to him, put your sword in its place, for all who

  708. take the sword will perish by the sword.

  709. First of all, what was Peter trying to do?

  710. He what? He was a fisherman.

  711. He wasn't a skilled swordsman. He wasn't trying to just shave

  712. down the side of old Malchus's face and cut off his ear.

  713. He was trying to cut his head off.

  714. He was in battle and we can try to cut his head off and Malchus

  715. moved and he sliced off his ear. I believe that.

  716. So because of that, people assume Jesus says put up your

  717. sword from this place because if you take up the sword you will

  718. perish the sword. So most people commonly think

  719. what he was doing is he was protecting him from the death

  720. penalty. Maybe that's true, maybe not.

  721. I think there's a little better point though.

  722. I think there's a better point. What was the Lord actually

  723. saying with regards to His Kingdom?

  724. One violence begets violence. Nothing good ever comes from

  725. violence. Violence begets violence.

  726. Jesus is the Prince of Peace bringing in a Kingdom of peace.

  727. It is a spiritual Kingdom, not a fleshly Kingdom.

  728. So he was saying, put your sword in its place because if you take

  729. the sword, you'll perish with the sword.

  730. You're missing the whole point of my Kingdom, Peter.

  731. And he protected him. Wow.

  732. And that comes to our last point in our conclusion.

  733. Here we go. And maybe this is the most

  734. sobering thought of all. Maybe this one is going to get

  735. all of us a little bit. And I hope it does me too.

  736. Because you know what? We hate this word.

  737. Society hates this word. You know what it is?

  738. Obedience. We see supreme obedience by

  739. Jesus. Going back to verse 11, after he

  740. told Peter, put your sword into its sheath, he said shall I not

  741. drink the cup which my Father has given me?

  742. Are you really going to stand in my way?

  743. Do you really think that I shouldn't drink the cup?

  744. We talked about what that is and fulfill exactly what my Father

  745. sent me to do. Are you really going to stand in

  746. my way? Remember when Jesus said get

  747. behind me, Satan here, he's saying to Peter, I got a job to

  748. do. Are you really going to stand in

  749. that way and notice, shall I not drink the cup which my Father

  750. has given me? I'm going to ask you a question

  751. when it comes to obedience. Do you make your decisions in

  752. your life from a spiritual perspective based on that

  753. obedience? The opposite of obedience is

  754. this. I'm going to do it my way.

  755. I like this other way instead. I know the Scripture says that,

  756. but I like this. I got a friend of mine, good

  757. friend, we talk the Bible all the time.

  758. He said, I know the Scriptures say that, but I just choose to

  759. decide that I'm going to believe this other instead.

  760. Even the Lord Jesus demonstrated supreme obedience and you know

  761. what he did? He paid a price he didn't owe

  762. because we had a debt we couldn't pay.

  763. Aren't you thankful that he did that?

  764. I'm so thankful that he did that.

  765. So in closing this morning, when Jesus went to that fatal garden,

  766. he knew where he was going. He knew the whole thing.

  767. And he goes to the garden of Gethsemane and four preeminent

  768. features are brought out in the garden which could show him as a

  769. victim. But he's not 4 things.

  770. Supreme courage. A coward would have gone

  771. anywhere but the Garden. Supreme power.

  772. He spoke the words I am, and they fell at his feet.

  773. By the way, it had no effect on them.

  774. They just got right back up and, you know, bounced right back up.

  775. No effect. What else?

  776. Supreme love. He protected his own, and He

  777. protects us too. And finally, supreme obedience.

  778. 4 preeminent features found when Jesus went to the Garden of

  779. Gethsemane. Then they took Him and it was on

  780. to the mock trial, the beatings, and the scourging, and then to

  781. Golgotha where he would fulfill God's plan.

  782. Does that give you a greater appreciation for the Lord?

  783. I hope so. He could have stopped at all,

  784. but He didn't. He did that for you.

  785. He did it for me. What are we willing to do back

  786. in return for Him? Is He first in our life or is He

  787. an afterthought every once in a while?

  788. Is he #1 Can't say he's #1 without demonstrating it.

  789. So He's going to be demonstrated in my life by my actions.

  790. Is he #1 Because guess what? You were number one to Him.

  791. We never close a time when we teach from the Word of God, when

  792. we don't extend an invitation to somebody that might be subject

  793. to the gospel call. Are you here and not a

  794. Christian? There are steps in order to

  795. receive the benefits and blessings of what Jesus has done

  796. for us. The first thing you got to do,

  797. you got to hear the Word of God. Romans 10/17 So then faith comes

  798. by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

  799. After you hear the word of God, you got a choice.

  800. You got to believe with all your heart.

  801. Hebrews 11 and 6. Without faith it's impossible to

  802. please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and

  803. that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

  804. Then what Jesus said you got to make some changes.

  805. You know it's true. Jesus wants you to come as you

  806. are, that's true. But when you come to Christ, you

  807. leave what you were behind and Jesus wants us to change.

  808. That's called repentance of our sins.

  809. Acts 17 and 30. Truly these times of ignorance

  810. got overlooked but now commands all men everywhere to repent.

  811. Got to change. Then we must be willing to

  812. confess Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

  813. Acts 837 Then Philip said, if you believe with all your heart,

  814. you may. And he answered and said, I

  815. believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

  816. Upon taking those steps, you are a fit candidate to go to the

  817. point of salvation, and that's to be baptized for the remission

  818. of sins. Mark 1616.

  819. He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does

  820. not believe will be condemned. The word belief means this,

  821. having the force to obey. I believe so much, I'm going to

  822. obey. There's that word again, obey,

  823. I'm going to obey. And what the Lord say, be

  824. baptized. Is it necessary?

  825. OK, I can't give you the verse on that because the computer's

  826. doing a thing. I'll quote it first.

  827. Peter 321 Is it necessary? The like figure we're in the

  828. even baptism. This is the from the King James.

  829. I like how the King James renders it doth also now save

  830. us. What's that mean?

  831. It saves us not the putting away the filth of the flesh, but the

  832. answer of a good conscience toward God by the resurrection

  833. of Jesus Christ. If you've never become a

  834. Christian, you could do that today.

  835. We'd love to assist you in that. Maybe you have taken those steps

  836. of obedience. Maybe there's something in your

  837. life that just isn't what it should be.

  838. Hey, all that matters what you do now, repent of that.

  839. Confess that. We'll pray with you and for you,

  840. and God will forgive and restore all fixed.

  841. We want to be the class. Come forward while we stand,

  842. while we stand.
