  1. It's wonderful to be here with all of you today and has already

  2. been mentioned. We welcome everyone that's with

  3. us. We have visitors that are among

  4. us and we want you to know that you are, as our brother said,

  5. you are our honored guest and we say welcome.

  6. We have several of our number that are missing today and I

  7. hope and pray that they're OK. Maybe some illness is going

  8. through the congregation that we have some folks that are

  9. traveling, but we hope and pray that all is well.

  10. But we have a great crowd here because you're here today and I

  11. have enjoyed worshiping with you so far, and I am always honored

  12. to be your speaker. We're continuing this morning in

  13. our series on the 40 days from the time that the Lord was risen

  14. from the dead until he ascended into heaven in Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  15. And we're going to get to some very significant things about

  16. the 40 days in our next lesson of this series, when Jesus

  17. restores Peter. You remember, Peter denied Jesus

  18. three times. We all know the story.

  19. And we're going to find that Jesus is going to restore Peter.

  20. And it's actually sometimes called by scholars the second

  21. conversion of Peter. And may I just suggest, I'm so

  22. thankful when I read about Peter and I'm so thankful when I read

  23. about the forgiveness of the Lord because Peter was imperfect

  24. in so many ways, and yet he was one of the chosen vessels of

  25. Jesus. And we find the forgiveness of

  26. the Father and the forgiveness of Jesus.

  27. And it's a wonderful story. And that's next time in our

  28. series on this event on the Sea of Galilee.

  29. The significance, though, we'll talk about what was significant

  30. about those 40 days. Let's just back up a little bit

  31. just for those that have not been part of our series.

  32. Let me just back up to where we began.

  33. I took us from the time that Jesus was arrested in the

  34. garden, all the way through the mock trials, all the way through

  35. the crucifixion, all the way through the burial, all the way

  36. through the resurrection, all the way through the early

  37. appearances of Jesus before those precious women and all

  38. that. And I began this series of the

  39. 40 days in Luke chapter 24. It was the morning of the

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  40. resurrection and Jesus appears before 2 disciples on A7 mile

  41. journey to a little village from Jerusalem to Emex.

  42. And those two disciples were traveling along.

  43. One of those names was Cleopas and we don't know the other one.

  44. It doesn't really matter if the Lord wanted us to know who the

  45. other man was and it would have said his name.

  46. It says 2 disciples and it mentions one name and that's

  47. Cleopas. And they're walking along and

  48. they're discussing all the things that had happened all the

  49. week, the last week in the life of Jesus and all the way through

  50. the crucifixion. And all of a sudden on the scene

  51. comes Jesus and he appears before them and he begins to

  52. walk alongside of them, but they don't know who it is.

  53. And Jesus says, what manner of communications are these that

  54. you're Speaking of? And are sad.

  55. You know, the Lord is basically just kind of serving them up

  56. here. He's kind of tossing up a

  57. softball. Here it comes.

  58. And they said, what do you mean? You must surely be the only

  59. stranger in all these parts to not know about the things that

  60. we're talking about. And Jesus says, what things?

  61. Well, all about Jesus of Nazareth, how we thought he was

  62. going to come and redeem Israel. And now he's been crucified, and

  63. it's the third day, and we don't even have his body.

  64. And the Bible says that Jesus began with Moses and all the

  65. prophets from the Old Testament. And he preached A sermon

  66. prophetically about himself. They come to Emmaus, that little

  67. village, and Jesus makes like he's going to keep on walking

  68. by. And they compelled him to come

  69. into their house. And you know, there's a lesson

  70. to be learned there. Jesus will never impose Himself

  71. on you. He offers all kinds of stuff,

  72. but He will never impose Himself on you.

  73. If you want Jesus in your life, you got to make the choice to

  74. bring Him into your life. He is always ready.

  75. They called Jesus and they asked him to come into their house.

  76. And all of a sudden Jesus reveals himself to them in the

  77. breaking of bread, and then he vanishes from their sight.

  78. And of all the things that they could have been impressed with,

  79. that was quite an experience by the way.

  80. They just saw Jesus, the resurrected Christ.

  81. They just heard a sermon by Jesus himself.

  82. And of all the things they could have been impressed with, this

  83. is what they said. Didn't our hearts burn within us

  84. when he showed up to us? The scriptures along the way, It

  85. was the word of God that burned in their hearts that produce

  86. faith and not the experience. May I just suggest, a lot of

  87. times people are looking for an experience to produce faith in

  88. their life. It's never been that way.

  89. That was a wonderful experience. And maybe you and your life have

  90. had experiences that have led you to the point that you're

  91. looking for Jesus. Maybe that's true, and I'm not

  92. downplaying that. What I'm saying is this.

  93. A person's faith has to be based upon the word of God.

  94. And it was with those two disciples what happened.

  95. They heard the word of Jesus. They heard the word of God.

  96. It burned in their heart. They couldn't sit still.

  97. They got up immediately. They travelled 7 miles back to

  98. Jerusalem. They just had to tell it.

  99. And now they're behind those closed doors with 10 apostles.

  100. Why 10? Because Judas Iscariot had

  101. betrayed Jesus and he went out and hanged himself.

  102. That's number one. And #2 for whatever reason,

  103. Thomas wasn't there. So here he comes.

  104. The two disciples are telling the story that they just saw the

  105. resurrected Christ. And about that time, here comes

  106. Jesus through the door, and they're scared to death and they

  107. think they're looking at a ghost.

  108. And Jesus says, don't be afraid. He says, these are the words

  109. that I spoke to you when I was yet with you.

  110. Nothing is different. I told you I was going to die

  111. and I was going to be raised from the dead.

  112. Here I am. And then he does what?

  113. He goes back from the Old Testament scriptures and he

  114. preaches A sermon. He shows them the marks of

  115. identification about the crucifixion.

  116. And they believe, but the Bible says Thomas wasn't there.

  117. Jesus vanishes from their sight. Thomas now appears.

  118. They tell Thomas, we've seen the resurrected Christ.

  119. And Thomas said unless I see his hands, unless I touch the nail

  120. prints in his hands and thrust my hand into his side, I will

  121. not believe. I'm not going to go into that.

  122. We did that last time. He gets a bad rap.

  123. Don't give him a bad rap if you weren't here last time.

  124. He asked me some questions later.

  125. I went all the time and went to it.

  126. He there was reasons for his being apprehensive.

  127. OK, what happens a week later? One week later, Jesus appears

  128. before them. Now there's 11, Thomas is

  129. present and Jesus walks up to Thomas and he says, Thomas, look

  130. at my hands and take your finger and put it into my hands and

  131. thrust your hand into my side. You know what?

  132. Thomas says, my Lord and my God, And Jesus says you believe

  133. because you have seen, But blessed are those who believe

  134. and have not seen. And I want to make a point of

  135. clarification for something that I said in the last lesson.

  136. All of those that he's talking about are sitting in this room.

  137. All of those that are talking about are talking about anybody

  138. that comes to Jesus that has never seen Jesus in this life.

  139. And I said this, we will never see Jesus.

  140. What I meant was we will never see Jesus as Thomas saw Jesus in

  141. the flesh, in this life, standing before him, looking at

  142. those male prints, looking at the side that was pierced.

  143. That's what I meant. Oh, but we will see Jesus again,

  144. won't we? We're going to see him again.

  145. It just won't be in this life. It's when he comes back in the

  146. second coming, all right? Now all that being said, we come

  147. to the 7th appearance of Jesus and there were 10 post

  148. resurrection appearance #7 is in John chapter 21 and I have

    John 21 chapter mention

  149. dropped down to verse John 21, but I've used as a text to and

  150. introduce our title breakfast by the scene.

  151. By the way, if you look at this and all of you that know me

  152. really well, you're looking at these verses.

  153. Maybe you're saying, I know you, Frank, there's no way we're

  154. covering 14 verses in our allotted time.

  155. Have No Fear. I'm not going to be like Paul

  156. and continue my speech until midnight.

  157. OK, Don't worry about that. Some of these verses we will

  158. narrate through. Some we'll spend a little more

  159. time on. But we're setting the stage

  160. because the events that are going to happen in our next

  161. lesson, we can't get them in this lesson.

  162. We got to go to the next lesson for that because that's a lesson

  163. all by itself when Jesus restores Peter.

  164. But let's drop down to verses 10 through 12.

  165. Here's our introductory text about breakfast by the sea.

  166. Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish which you have just

  167. caught. Simon Peter went up and dragged

  168. the net to the land full of large fish, 153 And although

  169. there were so many, the net was not broken.

  170. And Jesus said to them, Come and eat breakfast.

  171. Yet none of the disciples dared ask him, Who are you, knowing

  172. that it was the Lord? We're going to get into these

  173. passages in just a minute, but this is where we picked up last

  174. time after Jesus appears before the disciples and Thomas.

  175. Now we come to chapter 21 and verse 1.

  176. And I don't know how much time went by from the time that he

  177. met with those 11, with Thomas included and these Scriptures.

  178. I don't know that we're not told, but let's begin.

  179. After these things, Jesus showed himself again to the disciples

  180. at the Sea of Tiberius, and in this way he showed himself.

  181. By the way, the Sea of Tiberius, don't be confused, is just

  182. another phrase or another term for the Sea of Galilee.

  183. Why is the Sea of Galilee or why is Galilee significant?

  184. Let's back up. Don't turn there, stay with me.

  185. I'm going to narrate this Matthew chapter 28.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  186. Do you remember what happened in Matthew chapter 28?

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  187. Jesus was risen from the dead, and those two precious women the

  188. Bible described in Matthew's account, there was Mary

  189. Magdalene and the other Mary. What do they do?

  190. They just couldn't stay home. They just couldn't stay away.

  191. The Sabbath is now behind them. It's the first day of the week.

  192. It's Sunday morning, and here they come.

  193. They go to the sepulchre and what do they find?

  194. Early on that Sunday morning there was a great earthquake,

  195. and an Angel descended from heaven and rolled back the

  196. stone. And those precious women were

  197. there. And the Angel said, be not

  198. afraid, Come see the place where the Lord lay, They said.

  199. The Angel said, I know that you're coming to look or coming

  200. to search for the one who was crucified, for he is not here,

  201. for he is risen. Remember what the Angel said

  202. about Galilee in verse 7, and go quickly and tell his disciples

  203. that he is risen from the dead, and indeed he is going before

  204. you into Galilee. There you will see him.

  205. Behold, I have told you what happens next.

  206. These precious women go to do exactly what the Angel said, and

  207. then there's Jesus. And they fall down at his feet,

  208. and they grab his feet, and the Bible says they worshipped him.

  209. And then Jesus says, go, tell my disciples, go tell my brethren

  210. to go to Galilee and I will see them there.

  211. Galilee was very significant. The Sea of Galilee was very

  212. significant. Galilee was the place that Jesus

  213. says I'm going there and I'm going to see my disciples there

  214. and a lot of great things are going to be preached there and

  215. said there and discussed there. But I want to say something

  216. about these women for just a minute.

  217. Don't you think it's interesting that the Lord chose these women

  218. to be first hand eyewitness testimony of the resurrection?

  219. You might think, well, So what did you know that Roman and

  220. Jewish law all basically and Roman and Jewish tradition and

  221. Roman and Jewish culture, OK, all said that you have to take

  222. the testimony of women very lightly.

  223. You can't take it very seriously.

  224. You know, the Bible does never says that.

  225. And you know what else? It isn't true.

  226. The only reason that they could have thought such things was by

  227. way of culture and tradition. By the way, there are three

  228. sources by way of Roman culture. It's found in a textbook for New

  229. Roman students called the Justinian Institutes, saying the

  230. very same thing about women. What things?

  231. Their testimony is of limited value and they're unstable.

  232. I didn't say that. OK, What else?

  233. How about a how about a Jewish historian, Josephus?

  234. He wrote the same thing about Jewish culture.

  235. What else? How about in the Mishnah, a

  236. collection of Jewish tradition and scripture all saying the

  237. same thing? That was society.

  238. That was culture. Now here comes Jesus and he

  239. handpicks two women to be first hand eyewitness testimony of the

  240. resurrection of Christ. That's what the Lord thought of

  241. that. And you know what else?

  242. It was absolutely brilliant. Had it been the apostles that

  243. were first hand eyewitness testimony of the resurrection of

  244. Christ, then those Jews that rejected Jesus would have said

  245. no. It would have supported their

  246. lie too, by the way, that somebody stole the body and they

  247. lied about it. Oh no, it was two women.

  248. They had no axe to grind. They had no agenda at all.

  249. Just two precious women that just couldn't stay away.

  250. How must it have been for the rest of their life for people to

  251. come to them and say, what was it like?

  252. You saw Jesus 1st. And by the way, don't ever think

  253. that women are less courageous than men or less strong than

  254. men. Don't ever think that at all.

  255. OK. These women had courage.

  256. Where were the men? They all forsaken.

  257. The all fled. Yeah.

  258. Where was Peter? With all of his athletic

  259. prowess? He denied him three times, even

  260. cursing and swearing. I know not the man.

  261. So don't think for a minute, by the way, that women are lacking

  262. in that capacity at all. Just share something with you.

  263. Happened the other day. So there's this older lady that

  264. I know and I didn't know her all that well, but I've known her

  265. kind of of her for a long time. And she keeps her horses where I

  266. keep my horses. And she was telling me about her

  267. husband. She was saying, you know, my

  268. husband got sick and she goes, you know, husbands.

  269. She said men are babies. She they really are.

  270. When they get sick, they're really babies.

  271. She's going on and on and on and on.

  272. And I and I had something to say and I was going to respond and

  273. she was bracing herself. She thought I was going to

  274. defend men. I said, well, you do know you

  275. are tougher than we are, You do know that, right?

  276. She lit up. We're best friends now.

  277. Every time I see her, man, she just can't wait to come and talk

  278. to me. Listen, culture and society had

  279. a picture of women that was not true.

  280. And Jesus chose and God chose in this miraculous event the

  281. precious women that just couldn't stay away.

  282. To be first hand eyewitness testimony of the resurrection.

  283. Look at verse 2. Simon Peter Thomas called the

  284. twin. These are the ones that were

  285. present. Nathaniel of Cana in Galilee,

  286. Nathaniel of Cana, Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and two others.

  287. Other disciples were together. What about Nathaniel?

  288. Who is Nathaniel? Nathaniel is another name for

  289. Bartholomew. If you look into the gospel

  290. accounts in Matthew, Mark, and Luke, you will read that in all

  291. of those times in Matthew, Mark, and Luke, whenever the apostles

  292. are listed, all 12, there are always listing Bartholomew and

  293. never Nathaniel. What about John in John's

  294. gospel? He mentions Bartholomew one

  295. time. He mentions Nathaniel 6 times,

  296. no problem. All that means is this folks,

  297. Nathaniel's Bartholomew is the same guy.

  298. It's the same man. Notice then in verse 3, Simon

  299. Peters said to them, I'm going fishing.

  300. They said we're going with you also.

  301. Now interesting about this, we know that they were fishermen.

  302. We also know that commercial fishing around that lake at that

  303. time was very important to the local economy.

  304. We know that too. But it very well may be that

  305. Peter says I'm going fishing and they said I'm going too, that he

  306. was just talking about their immediate needs.

  307. Maybe they were hungry. We don't know that for sure.

  308. All we know is Peter said I'm going fishing.

  309. The other says, yeah, we're going too.

  310. All right, maybe immediate consumption was all they were

  311. concerned about. Notice.

  312. So they went out immediately, got into a boat, and that night

  313. they caught nothing. OK, historically speaking,

  314. Galilean fisherman, by the way, they would take torches and they

  315. would go out at night and they would take these Nets and there

  316. would be weights around the perimeter or the outer edges of

  317. the Nets. And they would take those drag

  318. Nets, if you will. And they would go far out

  319. because they can take those those torches and go farther in

  320. the dark. And they can drop those weighted

  321. Nets down so they can drag it along and they can catch more or

  322. fish. Well, you know what they did?

  323. They went out that night to do just that.

  324. You know what they caught nothing.

  325. Now I'm going to tell you something.

  326. What's amazing to me is how many people have looked at this

  327. narrative and really even some commentators have looked at this

  328. narrative as a as nothing but just a whole host of ordinary

  329. events. I'm here to tell you the divine

  330. hand of God and the divine hand of Jesus is all over this entire

  331. thing. They go out at night, they're

  332. looking to catch fish, they catch nothing.

  333. And then all of a sudden in verse 4, when the morning had

  334. now come, Jesus stood on the shore, yet the disciples did not

  335. know that it was Jesus. Now in this little picture, by

  336. the way, when I put up a picture, it's just a visual aid.

  337. I don't know what Jesus looked like and neither do you.

  338. OK, Also in this picture here, you know, a picture is worth

  339. 1000 words, but let me just make a clarification.

  340. It shows that it's kind of lit up, like maybe the brightness of

  341. the morning. It's probably more likely that

  342. it was dark that morning. And that's why at first they

  343. didn't recognize that was Jesus out on the shore.

  344. And we're going to find out exactly how far the boat was

  345. away from the shore in just a moment.

  346. But notice, all we know is it's early in the morning and they

  347. didn't recognize that it was Jesus.

  348. It was probably because it was still dark and they didn't

  349. recognize Him then. Jesus says to them, children,

  350. have you any food? And by the way, do you think the

  351. Lord needed to really know what that question was or that answer

  352. to that question was? He knew exactly that they'd been

  353. out all night. That's the Lord we're talking

  354. about. He knew exactly the answer, that

  355. they had no fish. He said children, have you, have

  356. you any food? They answer no, obviously, but

  357. the word children actually means little ones.

  358. Moffett says the word means lads.

  359. It's a term of endearment, it's a term of affection.

  360. What he's saying is, is children, not in a condescending

  361. way, but in a loving way. You got any food?

  362. Did you catch anything last night?

  363. They said no and then notice and he said to them cast the net on

  364. the right side of the boat and you will find some.

  365. All right. I did a little reading about

  366. this. It was very customary to have

  367. the net on the left side and the reason for that is the OR for

  368. steering was on the right side. So scholars would say that

  369. usually because the ornith steer for the boat would be on the

  370. right side, they always cast the net on the left side of the

  371. boat. Is that true?

  372. I don't know. It wasn't there, but it makes

  373. sense. The point is they did have the

  374. net on the left side for whatever reason.

  375. And Jesus says take that net and cast it on the right side and

  376. you will find it. You will find fish.

  377. Now I got to say this. Please get this number one.

  378. Jesus had divine power #2 Jesus had divine knowledge.

  379. So there's a big discussion. Did Jesus create the fish or did

  380. Jesus just know where they were? You know, my answer to that is,

  381. who cares and why does it matter?

  382. The bottom line is, is if they may have just been there, a

  383. school of fish, he may have created those fish and put them

  384. there. That would have been divine

  385. power. They could have been there

  386. because of natural means, but Jesus, by divine knowledge knew

  387. that they were there. Either way, it's still the

  388. divine power of Jesus, isn't it? Jesus?

  389. Take that net, flip over to the other side and you'll find some.

  390. Again, these aren't ordinary causes, ordinary occurrences.

  391. This is the miraculous demonstration on part of Jesus.

  392. What do they do? They cast it to the other side

  393. and the fish were so many that they couldn't draw in the net.

  394. Again, people that try to rationalize this event as being

  395. nothing out of the ordinary. I like what Burton, what Kaufman

  396. wrote about this. Now you got a picture.

  397. All these fish in the net, you've caught nothing the night

  398. before. Jesus just says they're on the

  399. other side of the boat, Chuck it over there, and all of a sudden

  400. you got so many fish you can't even pull it in.

  401. Then Kaufman says the entire narrative here cannot be

  402. explained at all except in a frame of reference, including

  403. the supernatural power of Jesus. Can it be doubted that Jesus

  404. already knew exactly where to find the apostles?

  405. That he knew of their fruitless night's work, or that he had

  406. built the fire and prepared food at exactly the place where Peter

  407. would swim the shore, or that he already knew that they had

  408. nothing to eat? How in the world could that be

  409. ordinary? And then in verse 7, therefore

  410. that disciple whom Jesus loved, that's John said to Peter, I

  411. love this, it's the Lord. You know, I don't know if it's

  412. because by now the sun kind of came out and they could see that

  413. it was Jesus, or maybe they now hear the voice of Jesus, or

  414. maybe they put two and two together with both those

  415. occurrences. But John says it's the Lord.

  416. But notice now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he

  417. put on his outer garment, for he had removed it and plunged into

  418. the sea. I've always got a kick out of

  419. that. You know, we always talk about

  420. impulsive Peter, right? How many times was Peter

  421. impulsive in his life, even to the negative side?

  422. When he pulls out of his sword in the Garden of Gethsemane and

  423. he cut off Malchus's ear, all the negative stuff.

  424. Well, here he's pretty impulsive too, except now he can't wait to

  425. get to Jesus. But we got to back up and talk

  426. about this just for a little bit.

  427. OK, first of all, the new King James says, for he had removed

  428. it. The outer garment, The old King

  429. James says for he was naked and because of that, because of that

  430. phraseology, he was naked. Some people think that he was

  431. there with no shirt on. In fact, you know what?

  432. When I was looking for pictures for my little slides here, I

  433. found a picture of it was Peter. I didn't put it on here because

  434. that's not what the Bible says. I'll show you why, But it had

  435. Peter on the boat looking at Jesus with his shirt off, bear

  436. bare Chester with his shirt off because people think for he was

  437. naked. This is what Thayer says.

  438. Thayer says that the phrase means he was wearing only the

  439. undergarment. He wasn't naked.

  440. It was referred to as naked in his mind, and we'll get to why

  441. in just a moment. But he had only on his

  442. undergarment. So I did a little research and I

  443. found this. It was very common, which is

  444. also common now in today's day and age too, that a hard working

  445. man will often times remove his shirt and work with his T-shirt

  446. on. How many times do people do

  447. that? Sometimes they even got those

  448. tank top looking T-shirts. You know those ones have a

  449. specific name for those, right? Or AT shirt or an undergarment.

  450. That's what the phrase actually means.

  451. Wearing only the undergarment, when he saw Jesus now, he

  452. evidently removed the outer garment, which would have been

  453. in cumbersome. It was actually called a

  454. Fisher's coat. And he removed his Fisher's coat

  455. and he went to work. They were working there, right?

  456. But then he saw the Lord. Please get this.

  457. Then he saw the Lord, and he felt like he was unpresentable

  458. in only his undershirt because that was Jesus.

  459. So he throws it on. He throws on the outer Fisher's

  460. coat and jumps into the water and starts swimming to Jesus.

  461. Now verse 8. See, I told you we're going to

  462. breeze through these getting faster.

  463. But the other disciples came in a little boat, so they stayed in

  464. the boat, and they were not far from land, which was about 200

  465. cubits. How far is that?

  466. 200 cubits, by the way, is 100 yards.

  467. Now, if you've ever swam, maybe you're a good swimmer, maybe

  468. you're not so, so good swimmer, maybe you can't swim at all.

  469. But 100 yards is still the length of a football field.

  470. It's still a pretty good swim. Peter doesn't care.

  471. He can't wait to get to Jesus. John says it's the Lord.

  472. Peter throws on his Fisher's coat and man, that's all she

  473. wrote. He dives in, he's going to get

  474. to Jesus. The rest stayed on the boat.

  475. You know why they got all those fish in the net?

  476. So it's about 100 yards. Notice in verse at the end of

  477. this verse, and they drug the net with fish alone.

  478. Again, here's another miracle. The very fact that the net did

  479. not break. Remember Luke chapter 5?

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  480. We don't have time to go into that, but Luke chapter 5, I

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  481. think it's verses one through 11.

  482. They caught a great number of fish and what is the first thing

  483. it says? And the net was breaking because

  484. of the great catch. This is an enormous catch and

  485. the net didn't break. Let's look at these miracles.

  486. Jesus knew where the fish were. He told them where to get the

  487. fish. He said drag the fish.

  488. All those fish are in there. We're going to find out how many

  489. in just a moment. All those fish are in there.

  490. They're being drug along. And it's, by the way, if you

  491. ever drug anything in the water, it's heavier than the actual

  492. weight of what's in the net. If it was on dry land, it gets

  493. heavier and heavier and heavier as you drag it through the

  494. water. And yet the Bible makes it clear

  495. they drugged the net, and it did not break.

  496. Verse 9. Then as soon as they had come to

  497. land, they saw a fire of coals and a fish laid on it and bred.

  498. Westcott said this. The very manner in which the

  499. charcoal fire and the fish and bread upon it are presented here

  500. suggests that they were provided supernaturally.

  501. All of it was supernatural. All of it was a miracle.

  502. Then verse 10 when Jesus said to them, bring some of the fish

  503. which you have caught. Why did Jesus do that?

  504. You ever stop to consider that Jesus always makes us do or the

  505. Lord always requires us to do our part?

  506. I don't know what it's like in your life, but I know this.

  507. Every good and perfect gift is from above.

  508. So if you've been blessed monetarily, even by the way,

  509. even people that are anti God, the Bible says the sun shines on

  510. the good and the bad, on the just and the unjust.

  511. In other words, there's a lot of people that don't believe in

  512. Jesus, but they're blessed monetarily.

  513. Sometimes we think that's not fair.

  514. I'm struggling. Anyway, my point is this, if

  515. you've been blessed, it's because you've been blessed by

  516. God. God always does His part, but

  517. God always requires that man does his part.

  518. In fact, if you ever stop to consider we can't do God's part,

  519. but he won't do ours. So God blesses us.

  520. He does the blessing, we do the working.

  521. I don't think this is an accident.

  522. I think this is a perfect picture of exactly what all the

  523. Lord had ever taught in the New Testament when He had His

  524. three-year personal ministry. He told them, do your part,

  525. bring the fish that you caught. One more thing about this, just

  526. by waving an example. Just one more thing.

  527. Do you know when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead?

  528. This just kind of proved my point.

  529. When Jesus in John Chapter 11 raised Lazarus from the dead,

    John 11 chapter mention

  530. Jesus miraculously raised him from the dead, right?

  531. We all know that He planned to raise him from the dead.

  532. He miraculously raised him from the dead, and he did so by

  533. speaking words. Lazarus come forth, right?

  534. But do you remember what happened right before that?

  535. What did Jesus do? He told them, take away the

  536. stone. God wants us to do our part.

  537. God wants us to go to work every day.

  538. God wants us to be responsible. God wants us to do what we can

  539. so he will do what he will. And the same was true with this.

  540. There was already fish on this on the shore.

  541. Jesus provided it. There was bread on the shore.

  542. Jesus provided it. All miraculous.

  543. I don't think Jesus went fishing early that morning.

  544. I think he just miraculously provided it.

  545. But then he told them, do your part, notice, please.

  546. And then Simon Peter went and dragged the net to the land full

  547. of large fish. How many?

  548. 153. And although there were so many,

  549. the net was not broken again. Again, a miracle.

  550. You know, these Nets were woven from hemp or flax.

  551. So if you put 153 fish in that thing and you drag it in water,

  552. it's going to break. And it did that too.

  553. It busted a little bit. And Luke and Luke's account that

  554. we already read, and Luke's another whole nother story, but

  555. not here. That was a miracle.

  556. Now, I got to tell you, I did a little research about 153, and

  557. it's amazing how many people make a big deal about the number

  558. 153. Let me just share with you a

  559. couple of things. Why was it 153?

  560. Some scholars say this. The number 153 is a triangular

  561. number with a base of 17. So in other words, it's a number

  562. formed by adding all the cardinal numbers consecutively

  563. from 1 to 17, thus making it a perfect number.

  564. Some suggest that was the significance, others suggest

  565. there's no significance at all with the number of fish any more

  566. than the six water pots in Cana when Jesus turned water into

  567. wine and he says take those six pots and fill them with water

  568. and then he turned them into wine.

  569. Some say that the number 153 is no more significant as it's not

  570. significant that Peter swam 100 yards to shore to meet Jesus.

  571. Whether this 153 is a complete number and that's why it's found

  572. in the scriptures or not, to me is irrelevant.

  573. Let me tell you what is relevant.

  574. Don't you think 153 is pretty specific?

  575. It doesn't say and they caught a bunch of fish or they caught a

  576. great number or a whole mess of them.

  577. It says 153, not one 5153. I think the significance is

  578. this. It proves the miracle that Jesus

  579. did was specific. It also gave the disciples

  580. something very specific to give first hand testimony of that

  581. event later on. It was 153 fish exact.

  582. It just adds credibility to the miracle and then the fact that

  583. it was miraculous and it was divine and it did come from

  584. Jesus. In fact, once Kauffman said

  585. this, the big point of such details proves that not only was

  586. this miracle by Jesus, but also the disciples had eyewitness

  587. testimony to these very specific facts.

  588. Now then Jesus said to them, come and eat breakfast.

  589. Yet none of the disciples asked. Baird asked him, who are you

  590. knowing it was the Lord? You know, I've tried to wrap my

  591. mind around this a little bit, but maybe in their mind they

  592. wanted to be sure. So that's why it says that they

  593. dared, that they none dared ask him.

  594. So there was a little bit of fear that there they wanted to

  595. ask him. Is this really you?

  596. I don't know if it was because of a, of a hint of disbelief or

  597. maybe they had some doubts and they wanted to be certain.

  598. But here's the whole point. Nobody asked him because the

  599. evidence was clear. It was Jesus, it was Jesus, and

  600. then in verses 13 and 14, Jesus then came and took the bread and

  601. gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

  602. Notice this is the third time Jesus showed himself to his

  603. disciples after he was raised from the dead.

  604. But it was the 7th overall appearance that the Lord made

  605. OK, three times before the 10 on the day of the resurrection, the

  606. night of the resurrection, one week later before the disciples

  607. and Thomas was their present. And now this was the third time.

  608. All right, now we've laid the foundation for the narrative on

  609. the Sea of Galilee. Next time we're going to

  610. continue with what happened after breakfast.

  611. And that was when Jesus restored Peter.

  612. Now I'm going to say this, and I'm finished.

  613. The next time I preach is Labor Day Sunday, and because of the

  614. California Labor Day meeting, the church meeting up north

  615. where quite a few of our members will be, I'm going to preach

  616. something different that day. And then the following Sunday,

  617. the 1st Sunday in September, I'm going to keep up.

  618. I'm going to take over or pick up where we left off here and

  619. talk about when Jesus restored Peter.

  620. That's the narrative that leads to that.

  621. Remember, everything that happened was divine.

  622. Nothing happened by happenstance or circumstance or coincidence.

  623. It was purposeful, it was divine.

  624. It was done by the Lord and gave the disciples something very

  625. specific. Remember, we're going to get

  626. into the significance of the 40 days.

  627. These things had to happen as they built their faith and

  628. increased their faith as they move forward because you know

  629. what's going to happen after Jesus ascends to his Father in

  630. Acts chapter one, They got to stay behind and they got to take

  631. the gospel of Christ to the world.

  632. That's the lesson this morning. Thank you so much for your kind

  633. listening and for your attention.

  634. I said in the introduction, I said when a person wants Jesus

  635. in their life, you have to invite him in.

  636. Jesus says, behold, I stand at the door and knock, but the

  637. doorknob is on your side. He's at the door, he's knocking,

  638. but you have to open it on your side, and that's your heart.

  639. This is how you do it. How do you open up the door and

  640. let the Lord in? The Bible says this, and we

  641. always extend an invitation to somebody that might be subject

  642. to that gospel call. The first thing we do.

  643. You got to hear the word of God. Remember those on the road to

  644. Emmaus. It was the Word of God that

  645. produced faith in their heart, not the experience.

  646. Romans 10/17 So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the

  647. word of God. After you hear the word of God,

  648. everybody's got a choice to make.

  649. Am I going to believe it or am I not going to believe it?

  650. You got to believe with all your heart.

  651. It says Hebrews 11 and 6. Without faith it's impossible to

  652. please him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and

  653. that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

  654. But then guess what? I got to do something in my

  655. life. I can't just keep living the way

  656. I've lived. I got to change.

  657. It's called repentance. I got to repent of my sins.

  658. Acts 17 and 30. Truly these times of ignorance

  659. God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent.

  660. All that means is I've been going in that direction.

  661. I want to make an about face. I want to follow Jesus.

  662. Not going to be perfect, going to mess up.

  663. I want to change the direction of my life.

  664. That's what I want to do. Then what I got to be willing to

  665. confess Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

  666. Acts 837 Then Philip said, if you believe with all your heart,

  667. you may. And he answered and said, I

  668. believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

  669. All of these steps lead toward or point toward the point of

  670. salvation. But the point of salvation is

  671. being baptized for the remission of sins.

  672. Mark 1616. He who believes and is baptized

  673. will be saved. He who does not believe will be

  674. condemned. Is it necessary?

  675. Is baptism necessary? First Peter 321 The like figure

  676. where the even baptism does also now save us.

  677. Not the putting away the filth of the flesh, but the answer of

  678. a good conscience toward God by the resurrection of Jesus

  679. Christ. If you've never taken those

  680. steps of obedience to become a child of God, we would love to

  681. assist you in that today if you would.

  682. Maybe you have, but maybe there are things in your life that are

  683. not what they should be. Maybe you just been away from

  684. the Lord. OK, fix it, repent of it,

  685. confess those things. We'll pray with you and for you,

  686. and God will forgive and restore.

  687. If you want to be the class, come forward while we stand and

  688. while we stand.
