  1. It's great to be here with all of you this morning.

  2. We have a wonderful crowd, and we're so thankful for that.

  3. We have some visitors that are here among us from the community

  4. and maybe other places of the congregations, and we say

  5. welcome, and we're glad you're here.

  6. As I have been announcing, this Sunday, we're going to begin a

  7. short miniseries on the day the Kingdom came.

  8. You remember that we just finished a series on the 40 days

  9. from the time that the Lord Jesus rose from the dead until

  10. he ascended into heaven in Acts chapter 1 and all the

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  11. significant things that actually happened over those 40 days.

  12. The title of our lesson this morning though, as we begin our

  13. series on the Kingdom is Baptism of the Holy Spirit and Speaking

  14. in Tongues. Now I got to say, these are two

  15. things that are very much misunderstood today.

  16. You might remember that two lessons ago when I mentioned

  17. some things in Acts chapter 1, when Jesus made a promise of the

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  18. Holy Spirit to be given to the apostles, He was talking about

  19. the baptism of the Holy Spirit. And I just mentioned in passing,

  20. there's a difference between the baptism of the Holy Spirit in

  21. Acts 2 and Acts 10 and the gift of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 and

  22. verse 38. We talked about what those

  23. differences are, but today we want to talk about the baptism

  24. of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues and how all of that

  25. happened the day the Kingdom came.

  26. Going back to the significance though, you remember of those 40

  27. days, remember this, I'll be very brief, but sometimes a

  28. number is just a number. That's true.

  29. And as we said in great detail, 40 is just 40.

  30. The significance of the number 40 with regards to days or years

  31. in the Bible is God happened to choose this period of time of a

  32. time of testing, trial, purification and preparation

  33. leading to a new beginning, transformation or significant

  34. divine action. That was examples in the Bible

  35. of all those things concerning 40 days and 40 years.

  36. That's the significance of 40. And while it's true that during

  37. that period of time, from the time Jesus rose from the dead to

  38. the time he ascended into heaven 40 days later, it's obvious that

  39. was a period to prove his resurrection.

  40. But it was also very significant because Jesus chose that time to

  41. prepare his apostles for the greatest thing they will ever

  42. do, and that is to take the gospel to the world and to talk

  43. about their role in the coming Kingdom of preachers of the

  44. gospel divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit.

  45. Now regarding the Kingdom, very briefly, it's nothing new.

  46. Daniel prophesied about this hundreds of years before the

  47. events that actually transpired in Acts chapter 2, in Daniel

Acts 2 chapter mention Daniel 2 chapter mention

  48. chapter 2 and verse 44. And in the days of these kings,

  49. the God of heaven will set up a Kingdom which shall never be

  50. destroyed, and the Kingdom shall not be left to other people.

  51. It shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms and

  52. it shall stand forever. I don't have time to go very

  53. deeply into this prophecy, but let me just say this.

  54. The Kingdom that's being referred to by Daniel in the Old

  55. Testament is talking about the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

  56. And it's talking about the greatest Kingdom in all the

  57. world that will never be destroyed.

  58. May I say, don't ever think the Kingdom of Jesus Christ is going

  59. anywhere. It's going to stand forever.

  60. Daniel said, and get this, Peter even said it's everlasting.

  61. Meaning when Jesus comes back, those that are in the Kingdom of

  62. Christ will be handed over to his Father, and therefore it

  63. will be everlasting and it will never be taken away.

  64. Salvation will have it, all those wonderful things.

  65. But to be in the Kingdom, everlasting in heaven, you got

  66. to be in the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

  67. Now, Daniel prophesied about that a long time ago, but not

  68. just Daniel, how about Joel and Isaiah?

  69. They all prophesied about the establishment of the greatest

  70. Kingdom in all the world, the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

  71. All right, let's Fast forward. Let's go into the New Testament

  72. times. John the Baptist, the cousin of

  73. Jesus, the forerunner of Jesus comes on the scene and says this

  74. regarding the Kingdom. He said repent for the Kingdom

  75. of heaven is at hand. 1 chapter Later after Jesus was baptized

  76. in the river Jordan by John the Baptist to fulfill all

  77. righteousness, he was tempted in the wilderness 40 days and 40

  78. nights. After all that happens, he

  79. begins his Galilean ministry. And in Matthew chapter 4, Jesus

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  80. picks up the baton if you will, and speaks about the Kingdom.

  81. And he says he began to preach and to say repent for the

  82. Kingdom of heaven is at hand. Two chapters later in the Gospel

  83. according to Matthew, in the greatest sermon ever, priest in

  84. the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus actually gave a model prayer,

  85. which is often times referred to as the Lord's Prayer.

  86. But nowhere in the Bible does it say the Lord's Prayer.

  87. If you want to know what the Lord's Prayer was, you have to

  88. look at John 17. You would have to look at a

  89. prayer that the Lord actually prayed.

  90. That would be his prayer. Jesus was giving a model prayer

  91. before the Kingdom came. In other words, here's a way to

  92. pray not not words to be regurgitated or repeated over

  93. and over and over repetitiously. All right, Jesus says pray in

  94. this manner. Our Father who art in heaven,

  95. hallowed be your name. Then he said your Kingdom comes

  96. or when the Kingdom comes your will be done on earth as it is

  97. in heaven. Remember when we studied this

  98. two years ago? Can't believe it's been 2 years.

  99. Two years ago I looked in Matthew chapter 6 on this

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  100. passage. Remember it is inappropriate for

  101. us to pray today for a Kingdom to come in the future.

  102. That's already been established. However, the word Kingdom means

  103. rain. Jesus said the Kingdom is within

  104. you, meaning Jesus on the right hand of God on the throne is

  105. reigning over the Kingdom. If the Kingdom is within you or

  106. people, he's reigning in the hearts of baptized believers

  107. that are his. So the only future reign of

  108. Christ, it won't be another Kingdom.

  109. It's already here. We don't pray for that.

  110. It will be, though, in the heart of someone that is not a

  111. Christian today, that becomes one down the road.

  112. That's the only prayer that we pray for people to come to the

  113. Kingdom. So the future reign of Christ in

  114. their heart will happen when they come to Jesus.

  115. We'll pray for a Kingdom to come that has already been

  116. established. Jesus was talking about a model

  117. prayer for a time before that. All right then, after the

  118. resurrection and before the ascension, Jesus told his

  119. disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit to come.

  120. And he said, But you shall receive power when the Holy

  121. Spirit has come upon you again. He's talking to to the apostles,

  122. and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem and in Judea and in

  123. Samaria and to the end of the earth.

  124. So this here is talking about the baptism of the Holy Spirit

  125. that was promised in Acts chapter 1 and verse 5 where

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  126. Jesus says for John truly baptized with water, but you

  127. shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.

  128. OK, after the ascension of Jesus in Acts 1, Matthias is added to

  129. the 11 replacing Judas, and now you've got 12 men.

  130. And these twelve men are ready for the greatest monumental task

  131. of their life. And that brings us to Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  132. chapter 2, when the day of Pentecost had fully come.

  133. Most of you know about what Pentecost means, and Pentecost

  134. actually means 50th and we get that.

  135. We understand. And sometimes people use the

  136. word Pentecost out of context to almost create or generate some

  137. kind of a religion. But Pentecost was a Jewish day.

  138. In fact, the word Pentecost in Acts chapter 2 is referred to

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  139. two different places, two different ways in the Old

  140. Testament. It is actually referred to as

  141. the Feast of Weeks in Exodus chapter 34.

    Exodus 34 chapter mention

  142. It is also referred to as the feast of harvest in Exodus

    Exodus 23 chapter mention

  143. chapter 23 and verse 16. In Exodus chapter 34 and verse

    Exodus 34 chapter mention

  144. 22, the Bible says you shall observe the feast of weeks of

  145. the first fruits of wheat harvest and the feast of in

  146. gathering at the year's end. It was a Jewish religious feast

  147. day. That phrase or these phrases,

  148. feast of weeks and feast of harvest by New Testament times

  149. among Jewish people, were simply called or referred to only as

  150. the Day of Pentecost, because it simply refers to what was

  151. observed 50 days after the first Sabbath following the feast of

  152. the Passover. How do we know that in Leviticus

  153. 23 beginning in verse 15? And you shall count for yourself

  154. from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought

  155. the sheaf of the wave offering seven Sabbath shall be complete.

  156. 7 Sabbath 7 * 7 is 49. Count 50 days to the day after

  157. the 7th Sabbath, and you shall offer a new grain offering to

  158. the Lord. What a perfect time for the

  159. Kingdom of Jesus Christ to be established.

  160. You got a whole bunch of Jewish people.

  161. They're there in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost, 50 days

  162. after the Passover. They were coming for the purpose

  163. of a grain offering to the Lord. And scholars tell us there were

  164. so many Jewish people there that day.

  165. Some say even over 1,000,000 people perhaps were in Jerusalem

  166. for this great event. You know, it's interesting. 50

  167. days after the Passover would have landed on Pentecost Day,

  168. which would have been on Sunday. Significant.

  169. Yeah, I think so. Old Testament, significant day.

  170. Sabbath day. New Testament, significant day.

  171. First day of the week or Sunday accident?

  172. Absolutely not. First day of the week.

  173. Sunday morning. It was time for the Kingdom to

  174. come. And what an audience they had of

  175. all these Jewish people from all over the world.

  176. All right, notice now what happened when the day of

  177. Pentecost had fully come. It says they, we're all with 1

  178. accord in one place. OK, who's they?

  179. They is very important here. You're going to hear they and

  180. them very important. And if we can understand who

  181. they and them are in Acts chapter 2 here in these

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  182. passages, then we can understand who actually gets the baptism of

  183. the Holy Spirit, who actually can speak in tongues and all

  184. that. It says they to understand the

  185. context of they you got to go back to the previous chapter

  186. because these were not written with chapter and verse breaks.

  187. It was 1 continuous letter written by Luke to Theopolis the

  188. recipient. And you go back to the very

  189. verse before this was was in chapter 1 and verse 26 and it

  190. says and they cast lots and the lot fell on the thighs.

  191. This was the apostles when they just when they were replacing

  192. Judas Iscariot and he was numbered with the 11 apostles.

  193. So on the day of Pentecost, the apostles were with 1 accord in

  194. one place, the same people that cast their lots where God chose

  195. who Matthias was going to replace, He was going to replace

  196. Judas and it was the apostles and only the apostles.

  197. OK, what happened to them in verse 2?

  198. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing,

  199. mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were

  200. sitting. All right, it's important that

  201. we actually just read what it says.

  202. Tell you what it doesn't say. It doesn't say the wind filled

  203. the house. It also doesn't say very

  204. important, the Holy Spirit filled the house.

  205. It doesn't say that either. It says there came a sound from

  206. heaven. What filled the house?

  207. The sound. The sound filled the house.

  208. What did the sound sound like? Didn't say, Didn't say there was

  209. wind. It said it sounded like a

  210. rushing, mighty wind. And why do I make that point?

  211. Because some people believe that when the Holy Spirit

  212. miraculously comes today, and some believe that He does, it

  213. fills the house with wind and all that, and it fills the whole

  214. house itself, floating around and say that, remember, the

  215. apostles were the recipients. And notice it was a sound from

  216. heaven as a rushing mighty wind. That's what filled the house.

  217. OK, what happened to them? There appeared unto them again

  218. them and they same, same people, apostles, what'd they get?

  219. Divided tongues as of fire. And it sat on each of them, the

  220. apostles. You know, divided tongues

  221. doesn't mean fork tongue. Divided tongues actually means

  222. to divide into parts and distribute what's being

  223. distributed. The tongues.

  224. We'll get to what that means in a minute.

  225. Divide into parts and distribute themselves among the apostles.

  226. That's what distributed themselves to the apostles when

  227. they received the Holy Spirit miraculously was divided or a

  228. division of or different parts of tongues going in different

  229. directions. This is again the baptism of the

  230. Holy Spirit. What does it mean to be filled

  231. with the Spirit? They were all filled with the

  232. Holy Spirit. To be filled with the Holy

  233. Spirit in this passage means to be filled mentally or under the

  234. full miraculous influence of the Holy Spirit.

  235. According to the New Analytical Greek Lexicon, page 232, they

  236. were filled or under the miraculous influence of the Holy

  237. Spirit. Who was they were the apostles,

  238. all right. And they began to do what?

  239. Speak with other tongues. Now I want to make some points

  240. here. I want to slow down here.

  241. They were able to speak with other tongues.

  242. Why does it say other? What is other?

  243. According to Vincent, other tongues are language is strictly

  244. different from their native tongues.

  245. OK, well you might say, well that could be anything, right?

  246. Give me an example, practical example.

  247. I speak English. I'm now 59 years old.

  248. I don't know another language. Any other language other than

  249. English is another language. It is different than my native

  250. tongue. When I was in high school.

  251. Complete waste of time. I had to take two years of a

  252. foreign language. Complete waste of time.

  253. What I did, I should have taken. Spanish would have done me some

  254. good. Wish I did.

  255. You know what I did? I took French.

  256. Worthless waste of time. You know why?

  257. My sisters took French and my dad spoke French.

  258. And I thought it was a way to help me through it.

  259. I thought it'd be easy. Never used it.

  260. And by the way, I still can't speak French.

  261. I got through it so I can go to college.

  262. I the day I was done with this class.

  263. I still don't remember any. I'm done.

  264. My point is, that was another language.

  265. It was a language that was different than my native tongue.

  266. Some people say, though, that these other tongues or other

  267. languages are ecstatic Babel or gibberish that nobody can

  268. understand. I've actually even heard it like

  269. this. I've heard people say, well, it

  270. is a heavenly language. I've heard people say it is a

  271. special private language that God gives you when you're saved

  272. to let you know that you are saved.

  273. Let me tell you one of the saddest things I've ever heard.

  274. I was studying the Bible with a young lady and she was really

  275. sad. I said, I want to study with

  276. you. I said, why are you so sad?

  277. She said, you know what, I wanted to be saved so long ago

  278. and somebody told me if I couldn't speak in tongues like

  279. they were, I'm not saved. So I completely left every

  280. concept of God in my life. I got completely away from the

  281. Lord because I figured if I couldn't speak in tongues, I'm

  282. not saved. Why bother?

  283. What's the use? Nowhere in the Bible does it say

  284. that tongue speaking. We're going to get to what that

  285. actually was. But nowhere in the Bible does it

  286. say that tongue speaking was a sign that you're saved.

  287. Nowhere other people say that these other languages or other

  288. tongues refer to heavenly or angelic language.

  289. And do you know why this is what happens when you take passages

  290. out of context, You make the wrong application.

  291. And because of this passage, they take this passage out of

  292. context and say that I'm just speaking the tongues of angels,

  293. angelic heavenly languages, when I do this gibberish.

  294. But this word here, tongues, is a Greek word, glossa, which

  295. means normative language. It is normal languages.

  296. I'm going to prove that to you and I'm going to prove their

  297. understanding of it and all that.

  298. But that's what the actual word means.

  299. Remember in verse 4, tongues is not gibberish.

  300. Tongues is normative language by definition.

  301. All right, because of the misunderstanding though, about

  302. people thinking, well, it's the tongues of angels.

  303. It's this passage right here in First Corinthians chapter 13,

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  304. verses one through 3, the apostle Paul context.

  305. What's the emphasis? The emphasis is the motive

  306. behind the act, and that is love.

  307. That's the context. And what he's saying is, as he

  308. speaks in hyperbole or an extreme exaggeration, he's using

  309. extreme exaggeration to prove that even if I can do a whole

  310. lot of these great magnificent things, if I don't have love or

  311. that's not the motivating factor behind it, I'm nothing.

  312. In fact, he says this in hyperbole or extreme

  313. exaggeration. After he said this in this

  314. first, I'm going to get to it in a minute.

  315. He said if I can understand all mysteries, is it possible for a

  316. human being to understand all mysteries?

  317. No, he's speaking in extreme exaggeration.

  318. He's saying even if I knew all mysteries and understood it all,

  319. He said even if I had all knowledge, no, that's for the

  320. Lord. Nobody understands that, right?

  321. And then he says this. And even if I had all prophecy,

  322. if I could do that, and even if he said I had faith, that was so

  323. great that I can move mountains. And by the way, sometimes, like

  324. in Matthew 17, when the phrase move mountains, it's talking

  325. about mountains of difficulty in a figurative sense.

  326. OK, in First Corinthians 13 one through 3, when it talks about

  327. faith moving mountains, it's talking about literal mountains

  328. because he's speaking in hyperbole and extreme

  329. exaggeration. What he's saying is this.

  330. Even if my faith was so amazing, I can literally move a mountain,

  331. if it is not based upon love, it profits me nothing.

  332. Keeping that in mind, let's look what he says about angels and

  333. tongues of men and angels. He says, though I speak with the

  334. tongues of men and of angels, He's saying, exaggerating the

  335. point. Even if I can speak all the

  336. tongues of men and even if I can speak all the tongues of angels,

  337. I can do that too. If I have not love, I am nothing

  338. but empty noise. That's the context.

  339. But because it says the tongues of men and angels, people have

  340. said, well, that's what I do when I go into this little

  341. gibberish or Babel or whatever I'm doing.

  342. I'm not making fun, folks. I'm really not, which some

  343. people believe. They go into something that

  344. nobody can understand. They say, well, I'm just

  345. speaking angelic words like Paul did.

  346. All right, OK. By the way, all of this

  347. historically comes because of the influence of the charismatic

  348. movement in 1960. And by the way, when I say

  349. charismatic movement, it's not a particular church.

  350. The charismatic movement was a movement that affected religious

  351. affiliations in the United States.

  352. Its origins actually started. The movement started in 1960.

  353. But what's amazing is in research, it actually goes back

  354. to some roots. They go all the way back to 19 O

  355. 6IN Los Angeles, CA at some big revival meeting they had where

  356. all of a sudden people claimed they got the baptism of the Holy

  357. Spirit that they got, that the apostles got next to and they

  358. spoke in tongues. And the tongues that they said

  359. they spoke were those angelic languages that nobody could

  360. understand. The movement though, and by the

  361. way, I didn't write this, you can Google it, you can look at

  362. the encyclopedias. This is this is fact, a prime

  363. force of the education and popularization of this movement

  364. is called the Full Gospel Businessman's Fellowship

  365. International. This organization has grown from

  366. a small beginning in 1952 in Los Angeles to many thousand

  367. adherents, always boldly advocating it's experiential

  368. religion with emphasis on Holy Spirit, baptism and speaking in

  369. tongues. The thrust of the movement has

  370. been accelerated by spectacular claims of flamboyant

  371. personalities through multimillion dollar television

  372. ministries. Healings of all kinds of claim

  373. lengthen, legs straightened, spines cancer removed,

  374. miraculously, even puppies raised from the dead, washing

  375. machines healed, empty gas tanks supernaturally filled.

  376. Wouldn't that be great? And one lady reported been given

  377. the new your belly button. I didn't write that and I'm not

  378. making fun. I'm reading what I read.

  379. Then there was a book written. There was a book written

  380. entitled Why Should I Speak in Tongues by Charles and Francis

  381. Hunter and this is what they claimed.

  382. Anyone who questions tongue speaking today or other aspects

  383. of the charismatic movement is condemned and lined up with the

  384. Pharisees who criticized Jesus and accused him of doing His

  385. work by the power of Satan. And if Jesus baptized with the

  386. Holy Spirit yesterday, then surely He will continue today

  387. and tomorrow. I want to notice with you,

  388. though, the reason for these tongues or languages.

  389. First of all, they did it as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  390. The Spirit gave them utterance, OK?

  391. They were guided miraculously by the Holy Spirit.

  392. Now when you ask the question, well, why, why, why did they

  393. actually speak in tongues? Well, we have some obvious

  394. answers that are running through our heads right now, and it's

  395. with the revelation and confirmation of the Word and all

  396. that. That's all true, but do you ever

  397. stop to consider the practical benefit of why they had to be

  398. given the gift of these normative languages that they

  399. never studied in the presence of a vast audience of a million

  400. people? Why one scholar put it this way?

  401. The miraculous ability to speak this is practically now in

  402. tongues was necessary for a group of uneducated apostles to

  403. preach to all nations. When the gospel was completely

  404. revealed and written down, the need for miraculous ability to

  405. speak in foreign languages ceased.

  406. How do I know that it ceased again?

  407. That love Chapter First Corinthians 13.

  408. Here we go again. Love never fails.

  409. Well, whether there are prophecies, this is miraculous

  410. prophecies, spiritual gifts, and we're going to get to that

  411. later. Whether there are tongues,

  412. whether they are knowledge, it will vanish away.

  413. All those things are going to happen and tongues that we're

  414. talking about are going to cease when 1st Corinthians 13, nine

  415. and 10 for we know in part and we prophecy in part by the way

  416. in part is talking about the temporary use or the temporary

  417. need of the miraculous spiritual gifts.

  418. There was a time for it, absolutely a time for it.

  419. That's which was in part now miraculous gifts.

  420. Really quickly. There was a need for miraculous

  421. spiritual gifts before the Word of God was completed.

  422. When the apostles went somewhere and preached the Word, or

  423. somebody else went and preached the Word and people were saved

  424. and they were baptized for their mission to bear sins and added

  425. to the Kingdom. Right when they left, they left

  426. people behind and there was still no New Testament.

  427. The only way that they can continue to authenticate the

  428. messenger, authenticate the message, and prompt a response,

  429. which was the reason for miracles.

  430. The only way they can do that is through spiritual gifts and

  431. leaving miraculous things behind.

  432. The only ones that can do that were the apostles, and they

  433. would come and lay their hands on them and somebody would have

  434. the gift of miraculous prophecy without the Bible.

  435. Somebody would have the gift of healings without the Bible.

  436. Somebody would have the gift of tongues without the Bible and so

  437. on and so forth. All of that would be done away

  438. with. When what?

  439. When that which is perfect is come.

  440. Please understand this is not Jesus because one interpretation

  441. is this is Jesus. In other words, all this stuff

  442. is going to continue until that which is perfect, which is

  443. Jesus, comes back at the end of time.

  444. No, that which is perfect is found in James 125.

  445. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty, that's

  446. the word of God and continues in it, and is not a forgetful

  447. hearer, but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what

  448. he does. OK, when the word of God was

  449. completed, that miraculous gifts has ceased.

  450. Why is it called the perfect law of liberty?

  451. It's called that because it makes us free from our sins and

  452. gives us the spiritual liberty that cannot be from any other

  453. source. So to sum up so far, tongues

  454. will ease. Language is given to apostles

  455. miraculously through the baptism of the Holy Spirit in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  456. chapter 2. It was not gibberish or ecstatic

  457. Babel that could not be understood.

  458. They were also given later temporarily through the laying

  459. on of the apostles hands to confirm the word of God.

  460. Spiritual gifts, but they're going to cease when the word was

  461. completed. And that task was accomplished

  462. by the close of the 1st century. Now I got to make a point here.

  463. I've been wanting to make this point because of the influence

  464. of the charismatic movement on Christian professing religions,

  465. or I'm just going to say on Christianity as a whole.

  466. Perhaps because of that, often times Christians, in an attempt

  467. to get away from the charismatic movement or the influences of

  468. the charismatic movement, have gone way too far in the opposite

  469. direction, almost to the point where people sometimes become

  470. robotic in their service. The Bible says Spirit and truth,

  471. and sometimes because we want to get so far away from the

  472. charismatic movement that we take the spirit out completely,

  473. even to the extent where people say the Holy Spirit doesn't do

  474. anything today, He's done. You know what didn't make sense

  475. to me? Now his work in revealing the

  476. word is completed. But what never made any sense to

  477. me is why is it we believe we all believe this because the

  478. Bible teaches this. There's three in the Godhead

  479. God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit. They're all deity, they all work

  480. together. We all get that right?

  481. Everybody will say, well, God's working in my life.

  482. I pray to him all the time. I need God, Oh, I need Jesus.

  483. So God and Jesus are working in my life every day in some

  484. capacity, even in some capacities that we can't

  485. understand or describe or explain, but we know what's

  486. happening. We're good with that, right?

  487. Oh, but the Holy Spirit's just been sitting this one out since

  488. the 1st century. He does nothing.

  489. That never made any sense to me at all.

  490. That's not the topic of this sermon, but I'm just going to

  491. tell you, God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit all work in our

  492. life. I'm just going to leave it right

  493. there. Do without what you want.

  494. Maybe that'll be a sermon for another time.

  495. One man actually said the Holy Spirit's dead.

  496. That scares me to death. Why would you say that?

  497. That's a deity. No, he's not dead.

  498. Again, I'm not saying miraculous stuff.

  499. I'm not saying charismatic stuff.

  500. Please don't put words in my mouth.

  501. Hear what I said and let's leave it at that.

  502. Let's move on. Verse 5.

  503. And then we're dwelling in Jerusalem.

  504. Jews, devout men out of every nation under heaven.

  505. Obviously because of the feast of Pentecost, you got a large

  506. number of Jews there present, right?

  507. And the Bible says from every nation under heaven, why would

  508. there be Jews from every nation under heaven?

  509. This phrase right here, Jews in a plural sense describing them

  510. from every nation under heaven is talking about the Jews of the

  511. dispersion that were dispersed or they were asked to flee or

  512. made to flee from their native land or the land of their

  513. ancestors of Israel. It's also called the Diaspora

  514. Jews. It's also called that the Jews

  515. of the dispersion. So the phrase is used to

  516. describe Jewish people scattered from their homeland.

  517. Keep that in mind because look at verse 6.

  518. And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together and

  519. were confused because everyone heard them speak in his own

  520. language. Does that sound like gibberish?

  521. Does that sound like ecstatic Babble that nobody can

  522. understand whatever was being spoken of?

  523. Remember, verse four is talking about normative languages.

  524. Now we're going to get to what this word means right here.

  525. Language in verse 6. They were confused because they

  526. heard them speak in their own language.

  527. Now, Diaspora Jews in the Roman Empire mostly spoke Greek.

  528. In the East they spoke especially Aramaic.

  529. Yet many Diaspora Jews would also be familiar with local

  530. languages and dialects spoken in the areas where they live.

  531. In fact, this word language here is a different word than glossa

  532. of tongues, which means general, regular, normal languages.

  533. This word is more specific. This word is the Greek word

  534. dialecto. And by the way, that's where we

  535. get the word you know it's coming dialect.

  536. They heard them speak not only in languages that were real, but

  537. they actually heard them in their own dialect.

  538. Notice the reaction to that. Now they were all amazed and

  539. marvelled, saying to one another, look, are not all these

  540. who speak Galileans? There's two reasons why this

  541. response. First of all, they're marvel.

  542. Wait a minute, these guys are Galileans.

  543. Number one reason. First of all, these guys were

  544. country boys. I don't know how to put them

  545. down. These guys were hay seeds.

  546. I guess there was. They weren't linguists.

  547. These guys. Galileans, according to Vincent,

  548. were blamed for neglecting the study of even their own language

  549. and charged with errors in grammar and ridiculous

  550. pronunciations. You've even known that guy that

  551. always mispronounces all the words.

  552. What if one of those guys is always mispronouncing all the

  553. words? OK, what if that guy all of a

  554. sudden start speaking 5 different languages and dialects

  555. in addition to that? That was perfect and flawless

  556. and people were hearing what he had to say in their own language

  557. and in their own dialect. Oh wait a minute.

  558. That's pretty amazing isn't it? That's what they were doing.

  559. They said. Whoa, wait a minute, what's all

  560. this stuff? These uneducated guys, aren't

  561. they all galileans #2 reason. Zur says Galileans generally

  562. spoke in a tongue that was particular to themselves.

  563. And that's exactly what they shot old Peter with when Peter

  564. was there denying Jesus. And they said your speech

  565. betrays you. In other words, you're a

  566. Galilean speaking in the in the language that's particular to

  567. yourself. Then verse 8 and how it is that

  568. we hear in our own language. This is the same word as verse

  569. 6, dialecto meaning dialect or subgroup.

  570. Give you just a quick example. OK, In the Philippines, all the

  571. years I went to the Philippines, people come up to me after when

  572. I get home back in America because they just don't know.

  573. And they say, hey, do you speak Filipino now?

  574. There's no such thing. There's no such thing as speak

  575. Filipino. There's Tagalog, There is all

  576. different other dialects and you can go to point, you can go to

  577. one place or one province and that dialect in that area is

  578. their own language. In fact, even the Bible, you got

  579. to get a Bible in that dialect. It doesn't read the same at all.

  580. We went to talk about an incredible thing that was

  581. happening to the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

  582. These apostles, these Galileans, they're speaking in languages

  583. and dialects which are subgroups even of those languages.

  584. Amazing. What languages?

  585. Parthians, Medes, Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia,

  586. Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt and

  587. Parsa. Libya, adjoining Cyrene,

  588. visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and

  589. Arabs. We hear them speaking in our

  590. own. There it is, languages.

  591. That's how they understood it. What did they hear?

  592. The wonderful works of God. At least seven different

  593. languages, by the way, and numerous other dialects of those

  594. languages were being spoken and they all understood.

  595. Now, one more thing regarding speaking in tongues, please.

  596. The baptism of the Holy Spirit only happened in Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  597. and Acts chapter 10. It was given to the apostles In

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  598. Acts chapter 2, when the Kingdom came and the audience being

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  599. Jewish, Jewish, that was there and they were able to speak in

  600. languages that were understood. That is the baptism of the Holy

  601. Spirit. In Acts chapter 10, the baptism

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  602. of the Holy Spirit happened again.

  603. In that case, it happened to the Gentiles with the household of

  604. Cornelius, and they spoke in tongues too.

  605. Why did they speak in tongues? Why did they have the baptism of

  606. the Holy Spirit? One reason as a sign to show

  607. Jewish Christians now that God accepted the Gentiles into the

  608. same body. Isn't that beautiful?

  609. Ephesians chapter 3 says that it was the mystery or the plan of

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  610. God. It was always in existence in

  611. the mind of God, but not yet revealed.

  612. It is now that Jew and Gentile would be alike in one body

  613. together. Amazing.

  614. Only time the baptism of the Holy Spirit happened in both

  615. cases. Real normal languages.

  616. And in both cases they were both understood without

  617. interpretation. Why is that important?

  618. And I'm going to have to mention one final thing or else it'll

  619. come up as a question. What about the spiritual gifts

  620. that we talked about before? What about the spiritual gifts

  621. that we spoke of earlier through the laying on of the apostles

  622. hands? What about them?

  623. If in Acts 2 and Acts 10 they spoke these languages and they

  624. understood it without interpretation, then all of a

  625. sudden what about or what was different about the spiritual

  626. gifts, the miraculous spiritual gifts by the laying on of the

  627. apostles hands as the Kingdom grew and before the Word of God

  628. was completed. What about that?

  629. Well, let's look. Acts 19 and six, when Paul had

  630. laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them and they

  631. spoke with tongues, languages and prophesied.

  632. That was a gift of tongues. You know what else they got?

  633. 1st Corinthians 12 and 10 To another, the working of

  634. miracles. To another prophecy, to another

  635. discerning of spirits, to another, different kinds of

  636. tongues. To another, the interpretation

  637. of tongues. I'm not trying to insult you,

  638. but you know what interpretation means.

  639. It comes from the word hermanuo. It's where we, by the way, get

  640. the English word hermeneutics. It's the way that we interpret

  641. Scripture, right? It means translation.

  642. What's that mean? It means to interpret or

  643. translate is to take one language and put it into its

  644. equivalent, into another language.

  645. In other words, when they spoke in a language they never

  646. studied. Chris Osborne, I don't know if

  647. you speak anything but English. So all of a sudden you get the

  648. gift of Spanish. No, let's do this.

  649. You get to get to German. I don't think anybody speaks

  650. German in here. And let's give old Terry

  651. interpretation. He, I know he's never spoken,

  652. he's never studied German. Don't you think you get the

  653. attention of people that just maybe they're speaking from God?

  654. Before the word of God was complete, That's what it was

  655. for. That's the reason for it.

  656. Word of God complete. No more use.

  657. What did they interpret, though? I want you to notice.

  658. What did they interpret? They interpreted different kinds

  659. of tongues. You know what the word kinds

  660. means? The word kinds is the word

  661. genos. It's where we get that word in

  662. biology. Even I remember that from high

  663. school. Biology, genus, wasn't it like

  664. Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species?

  665. And maybe the only thing I remember from biology, but I

  666. remember that in high school I got that one.

  667. Don't you see, folks, please listen to me.

  668. It means family, group, race, and nation.

  669. You can't have a family of ecstatic Babel.

  670. You can't have a group or a race or a nation of ecstatic Babel,

  671. but you can have national languages and racial languages.

  672. OK, why was it important that they all understood First

  673. Corinthians 1423? Therefore, if the whole church

  674. comes together in one place and all speak with tongues, and

  675. there come in those who are uninformed and unbelievers, will

  676. they not say you're out of your mind?

  677. The King James, the old King James says, Will they not say

  678. you're mad? I don't know.

  679. You know what I'd say when they all say you're nuts?

  680. You got all this going on? It's chaotic.

  681. Everybody's doing their own thing.

  682. You don't think God's brilliant normative languages, even though

  683. they were real languages, they had to be understood by way of

  684. interpretation or else people that came into the assembly.

  685. If everybody's speaking in all these different languages and

  686. nobody understood, the uninformed and unbelievers going

  687. to say, man, these guys are out of their mind.

  688. The Lord's brilliant, remember, it was for a purpose.

  689. Authenticate the messenger, authenticate the message and

  690. always, please. Miracles were always to prompt a

  691. response. They were never for personal or

  692. private benefit. Ever Find one passage that says

  693. that I'm wrong and please tell me after services always for

  694. that reason. So you've been wonderful.

  695. Thank you for your kind listening.

  696. So in conclusion, what did we learn?

  697. We learned the Holy Spirit baptism was promised to the

  698. apostles. We learned that promise was

  699. fulfilled in Acts chapter 2. It was promised over here, by

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  700. the way, by John the Baptist and also Jesus.

  701. It was fulfilled in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  702. They, the apostles, spoke in tongues or languages over 7

  703. languages and also a number of specific dialects.

  704. And those present all understood them.

  705. They all heard and they all understood about the wonderful

  706. works of God. Our final passage.

  707. Here's their their immediate reaction and response.

  708. Acts 212 and 13. So they were all amazed and

  709. perplexed, saying one to another, whatever could this

  710. mean? Others mocking said they're full

  711. of new wine there. There's always those guys.

  712. Some say, what could this mean? They've already admitted we've

  713. heard the wonderful works of God.

  714. They've already admitted we heard it in our own dialect and

  715. language and all that stuff. We heard it all.

  716. What could it mean? And there's always some guy,

  717. There's always that guy. These guys are drunk.

  718. They're full of new wine. Next lesson, we have some guest

  719. speakers coming up. But when I speak again, it's

  720. Part 2 and I'm going to call that Peter's masterful sermon.

  721. This was the introduction to lay the foundation of the day.

  722. The Kingdom came through the baptism of the Holy Spirit and

  723. the speaking in tongues. We never close a time where we

  724. preach the Word of God without extending an invitation.

  725. I don't know how it is here with you today.

  726. Are you hearing you're not a Christian?

  727. The steps to become a Christian are very simple.

  728. The first thing you got to do is hear the Word of God.

  729. Romans 10/17 So faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word

  730. of God. We've done that today.

  731. Then what? You got to believe with all your

  732. heart. Hebrews 11 and 6.

  733. Without faith it's impossible to please Him, for he who comes to

  734. God must believe that He is, and then He is a rewarder of those

  735. who diligently seek Him. Then what?

  736. I got to change my life. It starts with changing my mind.

  737. I got to repent of my sins. Truly these times of ignorance

  738. God overlooked, but now commands all man everywhere to repent.

  739. Then what? I got to be able to say the

  740. greatest thing I will ever say, that Jesus Christ is the Son of

  741. God. Acts 837 Then Philip said if you

  742. believe with all your heart in your may.

  743. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the

  744. Son of God. These are prerequisites.

  745. They lead toward the point of salvation, but the point of

  746. salvation is to be baptized for the remission of sins.

  747. Mark 1616. He who believes and is baptized

  748. will be saved. He who does not believe will be

  749. condemned. And folks, baptism is not an

  750. outward sign of an inward faith. It is not a confirmation of

  751. what's already happened. It's what saves us.

  752. How do I know that One final passage first Peter 321 the like

  753. figure where the even baptism does also now save us, not the

  754. putting away the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good

  755. conscience toward God by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  756. If you have never taken those steps of obedience, we would

  757. love to assist you in that today.

  758. Maybe you have. Maybe there's just something in

  759. your life that's not what it should be corrected today.

  760. Repent of that, confess it. We'll pray with you and for you.

  761. God will forgive and restore. If you want to be the class,

  762. come forward while we stand while we see.
