  1. It's wonderful to be here with all of you this morning.

  2. We have a an excellent crowd and has been mentioned.

  3. We have visitors that are among us and we want you to know you

  4. are our honored guest and we welcome you.

  5. Thank you for being here with us and please come back anytime you

  6. can. We're continuing our series this

  7. morning on the Day the Kingdom Came, and the title of our

  8. lesson is Peter's Masterful Sermon Part 1, and in

  9. particular, Joel's prophecy. Now I'm just going to say at the

  10. very outset, there's a lot of deep things in this prophecy

  11. that we have to methodically go through and sometimes they can

  12. be a little confusing. Sometimes there's various

  13. opinions regarding what Joel was actually referring to when he

  14. wrote the prophetic words and also when Peter was quoting that

  15. on this day that the Kingdom came in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  16. So I'm going to ask you to do this.

  17. First of all, I'm going to do my best to describe these things

  18. methodically in ways that are understandable and simply as I

  19. can, I'm going to ask you to saddle up and ride with me.

  20. Stay with me and let's go through this together.

  21. Maybe we can have a better understanding of what Joel's

  22. prophecy in this sermon actually was talking about.

  23. The passages before us are found in Acts chapter 2, beginning in

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  24. verse 17. And it shall come to pass in the

  25. last day, says God, I will pour out my spirit on all flesh.

  26. Your sons and your daughters shall prophecy.

  27. Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall

  28. dream dreams. And on my men, servants and my

  29. maidservants, I will pour out my spirit in those days, and they

  30. shall prophecy. I will show wonders in heaven

  31. above, and signs in the earth beneath, blood and fire and

  32. vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned Into

  33. Darkness, and the moon in the blood before the coming of the

  34. great and awesome day of the Lord.

  35. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the

  36. Lord shall be saved. As an introduction, very

  37. briefly, last time we talked about the fact that Jesus

  38. promised the apostles that they would receive power from on

  39. high. They were to wait in Jerusalem.

  40. That came in the form of the baptism of the Holy Spirit that

  41. came to the apostles on Pentecost.

  42. They were able to speak in tongues as the Spirit gave them

  43. utterance, and we studied that those things were not gibberish.

  44. It was not ecstatic Babble that nobody could understand.

  45. It was not their own private prayer language or angelic

  46. language. It was actually normal languages

  47. that were understood. In fact, the people that were

  48. listening there on that day, it says there were Jews, devout men

  49. gathered there out of every nation under heaven.

  50. And it says that somebody said, aren't all these that speak

  51. Galilean? And yet we hear them speak in

  52. our own tongue or language, which means dialect, even the

  53. dialect in which they were born. Did they understand?

  54. They certainly did because it says that they heard them speak

  55. the wonderful works of God. Now here's their response in

  56. Acts chapter 2, beginning in verse 12.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  57. So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one

  58. another, whatever could this mean?

  59. But notice, isn't there always this guy?

  60. Others mocking said, these guys are full of new wine.

  61. These guys are drunk. There's always the sarcastic

  62. person that mocks what's going on.

  63. They already recognized that what they were hearing was the

  64. wonderful words and wonderful works of God.

  65. And yet others were mocking and they said, these guys are full

  66. of new wine. Peter's sermon now begins and he

  67. begins with his response to them.

  68. And this is what he says. But Peter, standing up with the

  69. 11, raised his voice and said to them, Men of Judea and all who

  70. dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known unto you, and heed my

  71. words. For these are not drunk as you

  72. suppose, For it is but the third hour of the day.

  73. Now a Jewish day began at 6:00 AM.

  74. That was hour number one. So hour number three is 9:00 AM.

  75. The first thing that Peter says in response to their saying

  76. these guys are drunk, is he saying he's appealing to their

  77. logic. This is kind of what you might

  78. call an attention getter. Somebody says something

  79. absolutely ridiculous and they got to get their attention.

  80. He says, wait a minute, these men aren't drunk like you're

  81. talking about. It's 9:00 AM in the morning.

  82. Why is that significant? Even the Bible says First

  83. Thessalonians 5 and seven for those who sleep, sleep at night,

  84. and those who get drunk are drunk in the night.

  85. So the first thing he says is getting to their attention.

  86. He appeals to their logic and he says they're not drunk.

  87. It's 9:00 AM in the morning. Oh, but there's more.

  88. And very significant then he says this.

  89. But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel.

  90. In other words, one of their Jewish prophets, one of the

  91. things that one of the people that they would have understood,

  92. he refers to prophecy. And by the way, you can read

  93. these almost exact words verbatim in Joel chapter 2,

    Joel 2:28–32

  94. verses 28 through 32. All right?

  95. So they would have understood that, you know, this prophecy

  96. can be summed up really in three words.

  97. And I got to tell you, these 3 words are very, very much

  98. misapplied today. So you're going to hear me do

  99. this again. You know me.

  100. Those of you that do know me, we're going to go to context of

  101. the scripture so we can have the proper application.

  102. You can sum up this prophecy in three words here.

  103. They are prophecy, visions and dreams.

  104. And these three things are often misunderstood and

  105. misinterpreted. So what we have to do is we got

  106. to find out when were these things that Joel's talking about

  107. going to take place? Well, all we got to do is look

  108. to the very next verse and Joel and the Bible's going to tell

  109. us. Joel was going to tell us.

  110. Joel did tell us in prophecy and Peter quoting him tells us

  111. again. Here it is.

  112. It shall come to pass in the last days.

  113. I don't have time to go into all the things that this does not

  114. mean, but I will say this, It is absolutely imperative for us to

  115. understand what the phrase the last days mean by Joel to

  116. understand when this prophetic prophecy and promise was to be

  117. given. Let me tell you what it doesn't

  118. mean. It does not mean the end of

  119. time. It does not mean there's just a

  120. few days left. It doesn't mean the end of time

  121. is coming. These are the last days.

  122. Very important for us to understand what the last days

  123. mean. The last days is referring to

  124. the Christian dispensation or the final spiritual arrangement

  125. that God will have with man on the earth.

  126. That is encapsulated in a phrase called the last days.

  127. All right, if you look in the Bible, there were three

  128. dispensations of time. And I'm going to be very brief.

  129. Some of you, this is review. Others of you may, this may be

  130. new to you, but there's been 3 dispensations of time.

  131. By the way, dispensation, fancy word for spiritual arrangement.

  132. God's had three spiritual arrangements #1 the patriarchal

  133. age, or the age of the family spiritual arrangement where God

  134. dealt with the heads of families, Abraham, Isaac, and

  135. Jacob, for example. Then there was the Mosaic age,

  136. and that was under the Law of Moses.

  137. It was a national spiritual arrangement where God dealt with

  138. the nation, the nation of Israel.

  139. Then there wasn't something else.

  140. Jesus took the old Law of Moses, according to Colossians, and he

  141. nailed the old Law of Moses to the cross.

  142. And I'm so thankful for that because guess what?

  143. Now we've got a chance, now we've got hope, and now we've

  144. got grace. Now we have things that they

  145. never had under the law of Moses.

  146. I'm so thankful for that. Jesus died, shed his blood on

  147. the cross, nailed the old Law of Moses to the cross to usher in

  148. the very last dispensation that will ever happen.

  149. And that is the Christian age that we are in today.

  150. Why is it called the last days then?

  151. It's called the Last Days because there's not going to be

  152. another. I'm grateful.

  153. You know what happens after this eternity?

  154. Eternity. There's not going to be another

  155. dispensation on the earth. It's going to be a reward in

  156. heaven one day for the child of God in the Christian age or

  157. Christian dispensation. By the way, let me just throw

  158. this in. How about all those that lived

  159. before Jesus died on the cross? The Bible says in Romans 3 and

  160. Hebrews 9, the blood of Jesus took care of the sins of those a

  161. full time. In other words, if they live

  162. before the Christian age and they were faithful, they were

  163. obedient to God, they were good and righteous in the eyes of

  164. God, then the blood of Christ went back.

  165. Even though they're dead and gone, it went back and covered

  166. their sin too. In the future, it covers our

  167. sins when we become a child of God, and that will be later on

  168. in our lesson. Very briefly, but notice the

  169. Christian age. When did it begin?

  170. It began in Acts Chapter 2 on the day of Pentecost in about AD

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  171. 33. That's when the last days begin.

  172. Guess what? We're in the year 2025.

  173. We're still in the last days. If the Lord wills and the time

  174. shall be that the world stands in 2026, If we see a new year,

  175. it's still the last days. If the world stands for another

  176. 1000 years, it's still the last days that began in Acts 2IN

  177. Pentecost when the Christian age was brought in the day the

  178. Kingdom of Jesus Christ came. The Hebrew writer speaks of the

  179. last days as this Christian spiritual arrangement too God

  180. who at various times Hebrews one beginning in verse 1 and in

  181. various ways spoken time past to the fathers has in these last

  182. days spoken to us by his son who may as appointed heir of all

  183. things through whom also he made the world's.

  184. So the last days are the Christian age.

  185. What's going to happen in the Christian age?

  186. So let's methodically stay through this.

  187. Now, what did God say? God says in the Christian age I

  188. will pour out my spirit. What does that mean?

  189. I will pour out my spirit. The pouring out of the Spirit is

  190. indicative of the beginning of the miraculous age of the early

  191. New Testament church. It is talking about a miraculous

  192. age that began on Pentecost. On that day.

  193. I've already noticed with you that the apostles received the

  194. baptism of the Holy Spirit. OK, so that phrase that plays

  195. there in the last days when the Christian dispensation begins in

  196. Acts 2, when the Kingdom came, I'm going to pour out my Spirit.

  197. Now, why would they do? Why did they do that?

  198. It was necessary to confirm the Word of God because the Word of

  199. God wasn't written yet to confirm, to reveal and confirm

  200. the word of God as the beginning of Christianity, the

  201. establishment of Christianity. And we already studied that

  202. those things of the miraculous period would last until the word

  203. of God was complete. First Corinthians 13 beginning

  204. in verse 8. Love never fails.

  205. But notice, please, whether there are prophecies.

  206. This means miraculous prophecies, OK, they will fail

  207. whether there are tongues. And by the way, that's this

  208. where the Holy Spirit gives you the ability to speak in a

  209. language you didn't study. OK, there's a time for that.

  210. It's going to cease when there is knowledge.

  211. That's miraculous knowledge given directly by God.

  212. What's going to happen with that?

  213. It's going to banish away for we know, impart miraculously, we

  214. promise. I impart miraculously.

  215. And by the way, impart means temporarily.

  216. These things were temporary, but notice when that which is

  217. perfect has come, then that which is in part would be done

  218. away. And we already studied what that

  219. was. That which is perfect is the

  220. Word of God. James 125 is the perfect law of

  221. liberty. So in other words, the

  222. miraculous age that began on Pentecost would last until the

  223. Word of God was completed. OK, notice this please.

  224. And this is sometimes misunderstood.

  225. God said, I will pour out my spirit on all flesh.

  226. That has to be qualified, OK? That has to be qualified.

  227. It has to be restricted. Remember this number one, OK?

  228. It is exclusive to the age of Miracles.

  229. We've already shown that. That's number one.

  230. Therefore, this particular thing regarding the pouring out of the

  231. Holy Spirit does not apply to us today.

  232. I want to say a little side note here, OK, Holy Spirit does

  233. wonderful things in our life today.

  234. The Holy Spirit is working in our life today.

  235. The Holy Spirit is a benefit to the Christian today.

  236. That's not what I'm saying. I'm not saying he doesn't do

  237. anything. I'm saying the miraculous age of

  238. the Holy Spirit is over. That's what I'm saying.

  239. Now later on in this masterful sermon, he talks about the gift

  240. of the Holy Spirit. And I mentioned that a few

  241. lessons ago. And we may get into some of the

  242. benefits of what we get with the gift of the Holy Spirit in a, in

  243. a lesson down the road. So all that means said what you

  244. think I'm taking a shot of the Holy Spirit?

  245. What I'm saying is the miraculous Holy Spirit is a time

  246. that once had and was for a reason and is no longer in

  247. existence. Therefore, all flesh cannot

  248. refer to you and I today. Why?

  249. Because these things are referring to the miraculous age.

  250. That's number one. Number two, I heard this the

  251. other day. Oh, the Bible says the Holy

  252. Spirit's pour down on the animals too.

  253. It says all flesh. No, it has to be restricted. 1st

  254. Corinthians 1539 All flesh is not the same flesh.

  255. There is one kind of flesh of men, another kind of flesh of

  256. animals, another kind of fish, and another a bird.

  257. So the phrase means all flesh is referring to Jews and Gentiles.

  258. By the way, I don't know everybody in this audience, but

  259. I would imagine, and maybe I'm talking out of school, but I

  260. don't think so. I think everybody here is a

  261. Gentile, and a Gentile is anybody that's not a Jewish

  262. person by blood. I'm grateful for this promise

  263. here. Notice here in the age of

  264. miracles, God poured out His Spirit.

  265. Joel prophesied it would happen. It would be among all flesh,

  266. which included the Jews, which by the way, like I said before,

  267. happened to the apostles on the day of Pentecost, That's the

  268. Jews. It happened also in the baptism

  269. of the Holy Spirit in Acts chapter 10 in the household of

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  270. Cornelius. That's the Gentiles thus

  271. fulfilling this specific prophecy of the Holy Spirit, the

  272. baptism of the Holy Spirit being poured out on all flesh.

  273. Now the underlying theme here is wonderful.

  274. We don't have the miraculous direct operation of the Holy

  275. Spirit with us like they had them.

  276. But because it weren't the Jew and Gentile, the blessings and

  277. Christianity in the Kingdom of Jesus Christ are for everyone.

  278. Whether you're a Jew or a Gentile.

  279. It doesn't matter. And Ephesians chapter 3 says it

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  280. was always God's plan that Jew and Gentile alike would be

  281. together in one body in the Kingdom, beautiful, all because

  282. of Jesus. Isn't that great?

  283. Now, why is this significant? It's significant because up

  284. until this time, the Jews were the only people that had favor

  285. with God. Pentecost, Acts 2 would change

  286. everything, and now the gospel would also go out to the entire

  287. world, as we just noticed. OK, specifically then what else?

  288. Again, we're talking about the age of Miracles, keeping

  289. context. And by the way, by the way, if

  290. you missed the context, you missed the applications.

  291. We've got to stick to the context.

  292. It's in the age of miracles. We've already talked about.

  293. That would last until the word was completed.

  294. The word is completed. So this doesn't apply.

  295. What were they going to be able to do?

  296. Also, your sons and daughters shall prophecy.

  297. Your young men shall see visions and your old men shall dream

  298. dreams. Now Joe in this prophecy was

  299. mentioning other blessings that come as a result of the pouring

  300. out of the Holy Spirit. Three things.

  301. One, your sons and daughters shall prophecy.

  302. Now the word prophecy actually means to speak forth.

  303. The mind of to speak, excuse me, signifies the speaking forth of

  304. the mind and counsel of God. According to West Evine, that's

  305. what it means. And by the way, this is

  306. miraculous. Now, you can say that there we

  307. prophecy when we take the Word of God and speak the word of

  308. God, we do that, but that's not miraculous.

  309. We do that from the word of God. In this case, this promise was

  310. to prophecy miraculously. What else?

  311. Two other things. This is where people get all

  312. that little bit out of whack. Notice, please, visions and

  313. dreams. I got a good buddy of mine.

  314. Good. He's one of my roping partners.

  315. He calls me on the phone. He goes, oh man, he said it must

  316. be the last days, the end of times coming because I'm having

  317. these dreams. Had a great study with him about

  318. that. He was relieved because he

  319. thought the dreams he was having meant the end of time.

  320. Last days is not talking about the last few days of life

  321. context. And these were talking about

  322. specific things that happened during the age of miracles that

  323. don't exist today. So let me sum up.

  324. Visions and dreams refers to the way in which God has revealed

  325. himself to the prophets in times past.

  326. That's how God revealed himself in the old days to the prophets.

  327. Visions and dreams. How many times can we read about

  328. that? The Angel of the Lord said, and

  329. so forth and so on. Visions and dreams.

  330. Here's what God is saying in this prophecy through Jehovah.

  331. The indication is that God intends to continue to reveal

  332. His will to man. But now there's no partiality as

  333. to Jew or Gentile, male or female, young or old, or bond or

  334. free. OK, and something else

  335. specifically too, to add to that.

  336. Verse 18. And on my men, servants and my

  337. maidservants, I will pour out my spirit in those days, and they

  338. shall prophecy. In other words, the Holy Spirit

  339. who brings these miraculous measures of power will bless

  340. others with miraculous gifts such as the gift of prophecy.

  341. The reception of these gifts though will be through the

  342. laying on of the apostles hands. And that examples in Acts

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  343. chapter 8 and verse 18. Philip had already gone there

  344. and preached the word of God, but it wasn't enough.

  345. They had to call for Peter and John to come and lay their hands

  346. on them because they were apostles.

  347. So, by the way, when the Word of God was completed, the

  348. Revelation letters completed, the last apostle died.

  349. That was John. Then so did the miraculous

  350. measure of the Holy Spirit that also died too.

  351. OK, three points of emphasis and interest in this prophecy #1

  352. Joel's promise of the miraculous outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

  353. That's number one. Number two, the Spirit would

  354. also be miraculously poured out without distinction.

  355. It would even go to old men and young men and #3 it would be

  356. without social distinction. Even servants would get it to in

  357. Joel's prophecy. Again, this emphasizes the

  358. blessings of the gospel age is without distinction, Jew or

  359. Gentile. This covered the entire

  360. miraculous age of the early New Testament church when the

  361. apostles passed on miraculous spiritual gifts on the ones

  362. mentioned in this prophecy. So all that being said, if all

  363. these things were in the miraculous age, then none of

  364. these things apply to you and I today in our life.

  365. OK, all right, let's move on. But then verses 19 and 20, I

  366. will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth

  367. beneath, blood and fire and vapor of smoke.

  368. The sun shall be turned Into Darkness and the moon into

  369. blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the

  370. Lord. OK, now I'm going to ask you to

  371. really TuneIn, because here we go.

  372. A lot of stuff here, and there's a lot of speculation regarding

  373. what are these verses talking about #1 for example, is Joel

  374. referring or literally describing what is to shake

  375. heaven and earth? Or is it a fearful omen to

  376. describe the coming destruction of Jerusalem, which, by the way,

  377. Jesus spoke of in Matthew 24 and that happened in AD 70?

  378. Or is these passages talking about the end of time and the

  379. final judgment of men OK? Some people believe the entire

  380. passage is talking about when Jesus was on the cross.

  381. Some scholars say that the entire passage is referring to

  382. the destruction of Jerusalem that happened in 8070.

  383. And some people believe that the entire passage is referring to

  384. the end of time. So in my very in depth study of

  385. this, let me take you through what I believe these passages

  386. are referring to. First of all, we're going to

  387. pull out phrases here. The number one phrase I want to

  388. pull out is the sun shall be turned Into Darkness and the

  389. moon into blood. Here's a good question for us.

  390. Was this an eclipse? Was this an eclipse?

  391. You can read commentators and they say it was an eclipse.

  392. And by the way, I got to tell you, I remember as a kid, I, I

  393. don't remember what grade I was in, but I was going to Fred L

  394. Williams Elementary School. I remember there was an eclipse

  395. and you really had to build those boxes and that thing as

  396. you go see it and all that. It was kind of a big deal.

  397. It was kind of cool, right? Not so much in the ancient

  398. Mesopotamian world. I did a little research

  399. regarding the concept of eclipses, for example, and I

  400. found out some very interesting things and I want to share that

  401. with you. In ancient Mesopotamian society,

  402. they actually considered an eclipse as a bad omen #2 they

  403. thought it was a sign that a Kingdom was going to be

  404. destroyed, or a king was going to be removed, or something

  405. really bad was going to happen to a king himself.

  406. That's what they actually believed.

  407. And it brings up the concept, by the way, of substitutionary

  408. rights. Now, if you go back to the Old

  409. Testament, I'll just say this. We understand about

  410. substitutionary rights, and really substitutionary rights

  411. were ordained of God in a spiritual perspective.

  412. This is what God said. Under the Law of Moses, the

  413. Israelites provided substitutionary atonement for

  414. wrongs, ordinarily through the animal sacrifice.

  415. In other words, they would take the blood of animals and the

  416. high priest would take the blood of animals for the atonement of

  417. the sins of the people. God ordained that.

  418. And by the way, all of those animals represented the blood of

  419. Jesus that would be shed later on on the cross way down the

  420. road, right. But let me tell you what society

  421. did society, not God took it a step further and we and brought

  422. in the idea of a substitute king.

  423. In other words, human substitution was much rarer.

  424. One example is the substitute king known from the Mesopotamian

  425. text, with most examples from the time of the Assyrian king

  426. Esther Hadden. That was in the early 7th

  427. century BC. What in the world does all that

  428. mean? The concept of the substitute

  429. king OK was precipitated stay with me by the omen, generally

  430. an eclipse that predicted the demise of the king.

  431. In order to save himself from this fate, he temporarily

  432. removed himself from the throne and informed an expendable

  433. substitute enlisted for that purpose.

  434. Further, in some cases the substitute was someone

  435. considered of no significance and perhaps even mentally or

  436. physically impaired. He was then exalted to a high

  437. status of office for as long as 100 days, though often for a

  438. shorter period. And during this time, the real

  439. king was kept in relative isolation.

  440. It was a virtual exile, participating in numerous

  441. purification rituals. Meanwhile, guess what happened?

  442. The substitute king went through the motions of sitting on the

  443. throne, and during that time all of the so-called bad omens were

  444. passed on to the substitute. I'm going to let that sit for a

  445. minute. The substitute will be on the

  446. throne. The bad omens will be passed to

  447. the substitute who did nothing wrong, that was completely

  448. innocent. All the while the other king,

  449. the real king, was safe. You know what they actually

  450. called the substitute king? You can't make this stuff up.

  451. You know what they called him? A shepherd, yeah, you know

  452. what's coming. But you know what he really was?

  453. He was a lamb about to go to the slaughter.

  454. At the end of the period, the substitute was put to death so

  455. that the evident design of the quote UN quote gods would be

  456. accomplished. As one text read, he died to

  457. save the king and the Crown Prince, but his sacrifice is

  458. also understood to accomplish redemption of the people.

  459. And so the substitute king and his queen were put to death,

  460. carrying the fate of the real king upon himself.

  461. So I believe this first phrase, the sun shall be turned Into

  462. Darkness and the moon into blood.

  463. That phrase I believe, is referring to our substitute

  464. Jesus Christ on the cross, who was sacrificed for our sins.

  465. Only this was not a natural eclipse.

  466. It was a prophetic miracle according to Bowls and Zerah.

  467. Wow. In Luke chapter 23, beginning in

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  468. verse 44, that's what happened. It was about the 6th hour and

  469. there was darkness over all the earth until the 9th hour.

  470. Then the sun was dark and then the Bale of the temple was torn

  471. into. That's what happened.

  472. Now let's notice these other two phrases, please.

  473. So I think this phrase here is with reference to our substitute

  474. Jesus Christ on the cross. What about the other two

  475. phrases, blood and fire, vapor and smoke, and then this phrase

  476. here before the coming and great and awesome day of the Lord.

  477. What is that talking about? Well, first of all, some

  478. commentators say that blood and fire, vapor and smoke, or even

  479. in reference to the Passover with all the Passover lambs that

  480. were shed during that time, they were killed, blah, blah, blah,

  481. blah, blah, blah, and all the ideas, they have some merit, but

  482. I think in context, what makes the most sense.

  483. This is what happened to Jesus, blood and fire, vapor and smoke,

  484. and before the coming of the great and awesome day.

  485. Those two phrases I believe are talking about the destruction of

  486. Jerusalem and it happened in AD 70.

  487. The destruction of Jerusalem was also a prophetic type or a

  488. picture of the end of time. How do I know that?

  489. Well, first of all, let me just say this.

  490. Blood suggests, as one scholar said, the bloodshed that would

  491. occur. And fire suggests the burning of

  492. the city that could have produced billows of smoke.

  493. Now, let me talk about the destruction of Jerusalem.

  494. You might say. What in the world was that?

  495. The destruction of Jerusalem, Jesus foretold about it in

  496. Matthew 24. I've said a lot of things to you

  497. about the destruction of Jerusalem in the past.

  498. This is not what I've said to you before.

  499. This is something else. And the destruction of

  500. Jerusalem, it was marked by both blood and fire.

  501. By the way, this is all history. You can just you can look it up

  502. too. Accounts describe widespread

  503. bloodshed from mass killings and the temple of the city being

  504. engulfed in flames. As described by the historian

  505. Josephus, Roman soldiers intentionally set fire to the

  506. temple and the rest of the city, burning it to the ground.

  507. Archaeological evidence confirms a massive fire, with reports of

  508. the flames reaching extreme temperatures.

  509. Now, historical accounts describe the Roman soldiers

  510. killing of the Jews indiscriminately, even those who

  511. begged for their lives. The historian Josephus noted

  512. that the number of the slain were greater than those of the

  513. slayers, and the streets flowed with blood.

  514. So in context, the great and awesome day of the Lord refers,

  515. I believe, to the destruction of Jerusalem in context.

  516. But notice, here's my reason. The very next verse allows us to

  517. know their salvation in the midst of such a terrible

  518. calamity. Verse 21 And it shall come to

  519. pass that whoever calls in the name of the Lord shall be saved.

  520. This verse restores hope. In the midst of turmoil there

  521. still can be found salvation. The Jews who became Christians

  522. were spared in the destruction of Jerusalem.

  523. Remember Jesus gave them 5 remote signs, Matthew 24 and 1

  524. immediate sign. And the immediate sign is when

  525. you see the armies come and get out and go to the mountains.

  526. They knew. The people of God knew, they

  527. understood, and they waited and they got out.

  528. And Josephus, a Roman historian, said when they came to destroy

  529. the entire city, and when that happened, Rome pulled back and

  530. every Christian got out. Christians got out.

  531. Now in addition, all humanity going beyond this has the same

  532. hope in Jesus before the end of time, that whoever calls on the

  533. name of the Lord shall be saved. In the days before the

  534. destruction of Jerusalem. They would be saved in the

  535. destruction of Jerusalem and also eternally saved.

  536. The Christian today that lived way longer and after the

  537. destruction of Jerusalem like us today, guess what?

  538. Still the same hope, whoever calls on the name of the Lord

  539. will be saved. Isn't that great?

  540. My question is this though. What's it mean?

  541. What's it mean calling on the name of the Lord?

  542. I'm going to prove this to you, I promise, and I'm going to give

  543. you a Bible. Calling on the name of the Lord

  544. does not just mean speaking the Lord's name.

  545. It also does not mean, and it's also not exclusive to confessing

  546. your faith in Jesus either. That's not what calling on the

  547. name of the Lord means either. It involves those things, yes,

  548. but more than that. What did Jesus say?

  549. I'm a name drop. I'm a name drop.

  550. The master. What did you say?

  551. Not everyone says to me, Lord, Lord shall enter the Kingdom of

  552. heaven, but he that does the will of my Father, which is in

  553. heaven. What did Jesus also say?

  554. He says, Why do you call me Lord Lord and do not do the things

  555. that I say? So calling on the name of the

  556. Lord to be saved is a promise, right?

  557. It has to be more than just calling on His name.

  558. So what does it actually mean to call on the name of the Lord?

  559. Well, first of all, the word call means to invoke adore,

  560. worship the Lord, IE Christ. It is the same Greek word for

  561. calling that's found in a very familiar passage in Acts 2216,

  562. where the context shows that calling on the name of the Lord

  563. for salvation means to obey His commands.

  564. And that fits exactly what Jesus said.

  565. Why you call me Lord. Lord, don't do the things I say.

  566. Jesus says if you love me, keep my commandments.

  567. He also said, if you love me, keep my words.

  568. And if you keep my words, you will abide in my love as I've

  569. kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.

  570. So calling on the name of the Lord is obeying what the Lord

  571. said in Acts chapter 22 and verse 16.

    Acts 22 chapter mention

  572. Very interesting, very familiar passage.

  573. The apostle Paul was converted. Jesus appears before him.

  574. He blinds him dead in his tracks.

  575. He said, why are you persecuting me?

  576. He said, who are you, Lord? He said, I'm Jesus who you are

  577. persecuting. It's hard for you to kick

  578. against the goads. He said, what do you want me to

  579. do, Lord? You think he believed?

  580. Yeah, he believed. Oh, he believed.

  581. He said, what do you want me to do?

  582. He said you go into Damascus and you go down to the street, which

  583. is called straight, and it'll be told to you what you're going to

  584. do. He prays for three days, Three

  585. days. Was he saved?

  586. Let me ask you something. If he couldn't pray his sins

  587. away in three days, how does a person today think they could

  588. pray their sins away in one little sentence prayer this

  589. notice what happened. He already prayed for three

  590. days. He was a chosen vessel of Jesus

  591. to be an apostle. This was going to be the Lord's

  592. right hand guy and this is what happened after he prayed for

  593. three days. Ananias says what are you

  594. waiting? Arise and be baptized and wash

  595. away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

  596. I already said that calling on the name of the Lord is obeying

  597. the Lord's command. The first thing you got to do is

  598. obey the gospel. That's what He commanded us to

  599. do. What is that?

  600. To be baptized for the remission of our sins.

  601. In this passage it says be baptized to wash away your sins.

  602. That's what calling on the name of the Lord is from the

  603. Scriptures. So on the day the Kingdom came

  604. in, Acts 2, Peter began his sermon with the words of the

  605. prophet Joel. OK, Peter after this preaches

  606. Jesus. I love how he set it all up.

  607. He went through the early miraculous age of prophecy.

  608. Why did he do that? Because they said these guys are

  609. drunk when they were speaking in languages they never studied,

  610. when everybody was hearing them and they were speaking in their

  611. own language. And by the way, there were Jews,

  612. devout men gathered there out of every nation under heaven.

  613. Scholars tell us there was probably over 1,000,000 people

  614. there, and everybody there from their own dialect heard and

  615. understood. So they said these guys are

  616. drunk. Peter says, no, it's only 9:00

  617. AM, and what you're hearing is the beginning of the miraculous

  618. age. And one of your prophets, your

  619. Jewish prophets, prophesied about that.

  620. That was Joe's prophecy. Next he preaches Jesus.

  621. That'll be my next sermon in this series.

  622. Thank you so much for your kind listening.

  623. I hope this was understandable. I hope it was clear.

  624. I really do. If you have any questions,

  625. please let me know afterwards. But but a lot of things here,

  626. they're sometimes misunderstood and taken out of context.

  627. And so I hope we have a better understanding about those

  628. things. We never close a time when we

  629. assemble and teach from the Word of God that we don't extend an

  630. invitation to somebody that might be subject to the

  631. invitation. The steps to become a child of

  632. God are very simple. We touched on a little bit of

  633. that, but first of all, Romans 10/17 says so.

  634. Then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

  635. In other words, the Word of God and the hearing of the Word of

  636. God must produce faith. In fact, after you hear the Word

  637. of God, you got a choice. Do you believe it or don't you

  638. believe it? You got to believe with all your

  639. heart. Hebrews 11 and 6.

  640. Without faith it's impossible to please Him, for he who comes to

  641. God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those

  642. who diligently seek Him. Do you believe?

  643. Surely you do. Then you got to repent of your

  644. sins. And all that means is this.

  645. I got to change my ways. I'm going in that direction.

  646. I'm going to fall to the Lord today, that's all.

  647. Am I going to be perfect? No, I'm going to fall down, make

  648. all kinds of mistakes. I'm going to change my

  649. direction. That's what repentance is.

  650. It's a changing twenty of these times of ignorance God

  651. overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent.

  652. Then what must I do? I must confess that Jesus Christ

  653. is the Son of God. Acts 837 And Philip said, if you

  654. believe with all your heart, you may.

  655. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the

  656. Son of God. All of these steps point toward

  657. the point of salvation. They are necessary.

  658. They're part of the plan of salvation.

  659. But then we must be baptized for the remission of our sins.

  660. That is the point of salvation, where we contact the blood of

  661. Jesus, have our sins washed away.

  662. Jesus himself said in Mark 16/16.

  663. He who believes that is baptized will be saved, but he who does

  664. not believe will be condemned. Is baptism what saves us, or is

  665. it just an outward sign of an inward faith or a confirmation

  666. of what we already are? Let's go to one more verse and

  667. I'm done. First, Peter 321 The LAX figure

  668. where the even baptism does also now save us.

  669. Not the putting away the filth of the flesh, but the answer of

  670. a good conscience toward God by the resurrection of Jesus

  671. Christ. When you realize I'm a Sinner

  672. and I'm away from Jesus, you know what you need?

  673. You need an answer. Baptism for the remission of

  674. sins is the answer. Are you here and you're not a

  675. child of God? We can assist you in that.

  676. We can baptize you for the remission of your sins.

  677. Maybe you have, maybe you've drifted away.

  678. Maybe there's something in your life you need to correct.

  679. I don't know what it could be. If we could be here for you for

  680. any way. Come forward while we stand,

  681. while we say.
