  1. Hello and welcome to the Middletown Baptist Church podcast,

  2. where we are proclaiming the truth to the world.

  3. In this podcast series, we're going to be looking into biblical

  4. words that have great significance to our faith.

  5. The name of this series is called the Word of the Week, where

  6. once a week we will dive deeper into these words that we are

  7. familiar with in scripture.

  8. So come along with me.

  9. Let's study the Word of the week.

  10. Pastor Josh here.

  11. The word of the week is again gift.

  12. We've been studying the spiritual gifts listed in Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  13. chapter 12 here for many weeks now.

  14. And we are going one by one and looking briefly at each one of

  15. these gifts and how they fit in within the church and how we as

  16. Christians can identify those spiritual gifts in our life.

  17. And so we pick up with Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  18. And we have talked now about the gift of prophecy.

  19. We've talked about the gift of ministry or service.

  20. We've talked about the gift of teaching.

  21. And this week we find ourselves looking at the gift of

  22. exhortation.

  23. We need to ask a few questions with the gift of exhortation number

  24. one, what is exhortation?

  25. It's the gift of God given to us through the Holy Spirit, focused

  26. on motivating others to, or encouraging others in their spiritual

  27. growth.

  28. Okay, so this is the gift of encouragement, the gift of motivation.

  29. You could say it this way, coming alongside of someone to pull

  30. them along or encourage them along, even, even challenging them

  31. to come along in their spiritual growth in accordance to

  32. Scripture.

  33. And so just like all the other gifts that we've seen so far, this

  34. is a gift given to us by God through his grace after salvation,

  35. led by the Spirit, so that we can help in areas within the church,

  36. encourage others to come to an understanding of who Jesus is and

  37. what he has done for us.

  38. And ultimately, as we've seen in First Peter, chapter four, to

  39. glorify God.

  40. And so the gift of exhortation is, is that Spirit given gift to

  41. motivate others, to serve God, to motivate others to grow in their

  42. knowledge of the Lord and the application of their knowledge to

  43. godly wisdom.

  44. And so it's calling to action somebody who understands the truth

  45. of God, but now needs to apply that to their life.

  46. And so this is done to strengthen both the individual and

  47. the body of believers for service to the Lord, obviously for

  48. the purpose of exalting the name of God.

  49. And so an individual who has this gift appreciates serving, but

  50. also has a, has a desire to look into others, have compassion

  51. for others and challenging others.

  52. So this is a very all of these gifts are, are not self focused.

  53. It's the opposite of that.

  54. There's humility there, it's others focused.

  55. So, so these individuals would be able to give clear and practical

  56. goals and steps to achieve spiritual growth.

  57. And so this is somebody who focuses on individuals and loves

  58. individuals, loves mentoring, loves counseling.

  59. They might even have the element of teaching along with this.

  60. They would be able to explain well, to communicate direction well,

  61. able to understand difficulties in the way and prepare

  62. folks for those difficulties.

  63. Helping people make decisions, helping people finish what they have

  64. started.

  65. Giving people the drive to see spiritual growth in others as well.

  66. So we talked about this last week, Second Timothy, chapter two,

  67. verse two.

  68. You, you teach some so that they can teach some, so that they

  69. can teach some.

  70. So you've been taught and then you teach others and then other people

  71. teach other people.

  72. Well, it's the same thing with exhortation.

  73. You know, there's that idea of people have exhorted us, encouraged

  74. us, challenged us.

  75. And then there's other people that we can challenge in our life

  76. so that they may encourage and challenge others.

  77. And so this is a wonderful gift in the ministry, a needed gift

  78. in the ministry because we have so many people that as we, as

  79. we already seen in First Peter, chapter four, there's, there's

  80. the manifold or the various gifts of God.

  81. So different people fall on different areas of the spectrum within

  82. serving the Lord.

  83. And so like all of the gifts, this is a needed gift in the process

  84. of moving people forward.

  85. But like in every gift, you have the challenge of either living

  86. within the spirit or living in the flesh.

  87. So a spirit filled teacher or a spirit filled encourager is going

  88. to be someone who has the desire to push people forward, has

  89. a desire to discern the spiritual growth or the spiritual

  90. gifts in other people and, and then allowing them to get to a place

  91. of, of maturity in their life.

  92. And so, but then you have the other side of things where there's

  93. the, maybe the fleshly or the carnal exhorter.

  94. And you know, again, in all of these gifts, the person walking in

  95. the flesh is looking for self recognition.

  96. They're seeking praise of, of them, of their own work.

  97. And so we have to be careful of that.

  98. Obviously, someone who's walking in the flesh might feel that

  99. they could take credit for what they're doing by exhorting and

  100. challenging others, maybe even would elevate a, their, their personal

  101. experience or their opinions above scripture.

  102. So, so again, like all of the other gifts, we need to make sure

  103. that we are exercising this in the Spirit now we go back to first

  104. Peter, chapter four in that regard because it of gives us that.

  105. That touch point, that, that beginning point in, in reminding

  106. us what these gifts are all about.

  107. So as every man hath received the gift, so some of us have received

  108. the gift of exhortation.

  109. Some of us have received the gift of prophecy.

  110. Some of us have received the gift of.

  111. We're going to talk about later on giving.

  112. And so the list goes on and on.

  113. So some of us have been given that gift.

  114. All of us, we should say have been given a gift.

  115. And then he goes on to say, even so, minister, that's serving

  116. the same one to another.

  117. So again, the focus is other.

  118. So an exhorter is looking to see who he or she can exhort, who

  119. he or she can encourage, who he or she can exemplify spiritual

  120. growth to in their life.

  121. So even so, minister, the same one to another as good stewards.

  122. I think that's important to note as well.

  123. It's that stewardship principle.

  124. This is not something that we have been accomplishing in our own

  125. strength.

  126. This is a gift of God.

  127. We don't own this.

  128. We are stewarding what God has given us.

  129. And so that gives us that humility, perspective, that gives

  130. us that selflessness and allows us to see where truly the

  131. source of all these things are coming from.

  132. So good stewards of the manifold.

  133. We already mentioned that.

  134. The manifold, the various gifts of grace, the manifold grace

  135. of God.

  136. So there's so much packed into that verse.

  137. And we know that it's from God, we know that it's for God, and

  138. we know that ultimately we are just the vessels in this process

  139. of exhortation.

  140. So you think about different ways that we could exhort people.

  141. You know, you look at Scripture and you think of some individuals

  142. that might have been good exhorters.

  143. I think of people like David.

  144. He would exhort others.

  145. And David's mighty men, he came alongside of them and encouraged

  146. them to stand fast in their faith and, and fight for the cause

  147. of the Lord.

  148. And then, you know, you can think about back at.

  149. In the New Testament with Paul.

  150. I mean, Paul would definitely be considered a teacher, definitely

  151. a prophet.

  152. But we do know that Paul would come alongside and exhort others.

  153. And I think that that's an important ministry gift that all

  154. of us can at least strive for, even if we're not necessarily gifted

  155. in this supernaturally.

  156. I think that we all should strive to be better at exhortation.

  157. Exhortation in the area of encouragement and the area of challenging

  158. others coming along And I think that's important to notice

  159. too.

  160. It literally means to come alongside of other people.

  161. It doesn't mean to push people.

  162. You know, I think sometimes that gets out of context when we

  163. think about, you know, challenging people.

  164. It's like, well, I don't push people.

  165. I don't condemn people.

  166. I don't, you know, judge people.

  167. No, exhortation is, is essentially coming alongside of someone

  168. and urging them to do something.

  169. So it there is that in the Greek, the idea of being close, the

  170. idea of walking alongside them.

  171. We're in the trenches together.

  172. And Paul Instructs Timothy in First Peter, or excuse me, First

    1 Timothy 4:13

  173. Timothy, chapter 4, verse 13.

  174. In the ministry, he says, till I come give attendance to reading

  175. to exhortation into doctrine.

  176. So we know that exhortation has to be a part of the church just

  177. as much as doctrine, just as much as biblical teaching sound.

  178. Biblical teaching needs to be within the church.

  179. So does exhortation.

  180. And so the word is used there in the concept of encouraging, admonishing

  181. and challenging others to spiritual growth.

  182. And so in that case, Timothy's job as a pastor was to encourage

  183. those within his body, within the flock, as an under shepherd.

  184. And so we know that obviously this would be a gift that many pastors

  185. should, should have or at least grow in.

  186. But we know that the church is more than just the pastor.

  187. The church is made up of many individuals.

  188. And so the exhortation gift can be exhibited in many different

  189. areas within the church.

  190. So the Holy Spirit gives believers these gifts for a purpose.

  191. And that purpose is to bring them closer to the Lord so that they

  192. can reach more people for Christ.

  193. And so I think what we can leave with, with this thought is

  194. ex exhortation is not pushing.

  195. Exhortation is not pressuring.

  196. Exhortation is not putting a guilt trip on somebody for spiritual

  197. growth.

  198. But it is a time where we can come alongside of somebody and so

  199. doing it together.

  200. Let's do this together.

  201. So exhortation is not just talking the talk, but it's walking

  202. the walk.

  203. And so people with the gift of exhortation don't just proclaim the

  204. truth.

  205. That's the gift of prophecy.

  206. There is some proclamation of truth with exhortation, but the exhorter

  207. develops relationships.

  208. The exhorter takes time to do extra things when people might be

  209. struggling with their Bible study or their prayer time or even

  210. just elements of their life.

  211. And so an exhorter is someone that takes it a step further from

  212. the proclamation of the truth.

  213. It takes.

  214. They take it a step further than teaching the Scriptures.

  215. So it could look like this.

  216. You know, a person could get up and say, thus saith the Lord.

  217. This is true from Scripture.

  218. But an exhorter would then come alongside of someone who might

  219. be struggling in an area and say, hey, can we go grab some coffee?

  220. I'd love to help you out with this.

  221. I'd love to pray with you on this.

  222. I'd love to walk you through some steps to get to this place in

  223. your life that God wants you to be.

  224. And so like we mentioned before, regardless of whatever gift

  225. that we are given in, in the primary sense, all Christians should

  226. desire to become better at this gift of exhortation or this

  227. aspect of exhortation within the ministry, because this shows,

  228. this shows the love that we have for other people and it ultimately

  229. will strengthen the body of Christ the more that we exhort each

  230. other to love and to good works.

  231. And so all of us are called to exhort each other, challenge each

  232. other to that.

  233. And I think that that is an element of the church that sometimes

  234. gets overlooked.

  235. Sometimes we don't have a problem with the proclamation of

  236. the truth, but sometimes we have a problem with the follow up,

  237. following up with the understanding that, hey, someone

  238. needs help, Someone needs help here.

  239. Hebrews chapter 3, verse 13 talks about we need to do this every

    Hebrews 3:13

  240. day.

  241. The encouragement has to happen every day, the exhortation

  242. has to happen every day.

  243. And I think that that is showing the importance of, of the

  244. love that we have for each other, but ultimately the, the practical

  245. application of, of the truth of God, even, even in the book of

  246. Hebrews, Hebrews chapter 10, Hebrews chapter 10, verse 24 and

Hebrews 10 chapter mention Hebrews 10:24

  247. 25.

  248. Very familiar passage when it comes to the assembling of ourselves

  249. together as a church.

  250. But it, but it says, and let us consider one another to provoke

  251. unto love and to good works, not forsaking of the assembling of

  252. ourselves together as the manner of some is, but exhorting,

  253. there's our word there, but exhorting one another.

  254. And so much the more as you see the day approaching.

  255. So the call is, is that we are all up to meet, we are all to spend

  256. time together, and we're all called to exhort each other.

  257. And, and that's the idea of provoking each other to love and

  258. good work.

  259. It's not a negative provoking that we're provoking just means to

  260. stir up, to encourage, to, to revitalize, to get each other fired

  261. up for the cause of the gospel.

  262. And so we as a church are called to meet together, but meeting

  263. together is not enough because if you go on farther in that verse,

  264. it says, but exhorting one another.

  265. So the goal is to meet, yes, as a church, but then the next step

  266. would be meet and then exhort each other for love and good works.

  267. And, and I think that is what God has called us to do when it comes

  268. to the area of exhortation.

  269. Now we'll come back next week and we will look at the gift of giving

  270. and we're going to go through each one of these gifts here listed

  271. In Romans chapter 12, these ministering gifts.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  272. And when we get done with that, we'll have a good picture of

  273. these spiritual gifts listed to us In Romans chapter 12, as we

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  274. serve the Lord together.

  275. Well, after that study, we will get into a new one.

  276. But I encourage you to follow along with us here this year in 2025,

  277. and we will be doing Word of the Week every single week.

  278. These will be posted every Wednesday and I hope that you can

  279. enjoy these, grow with us on these, and then share some of these

  280. with your friends and family.

  281. Because the more we promote the Gospel, the more we're able to

  282. see people come to the understanding of who Jesus is and

  283. what he has done for us.

  284. And we want to proclaim the truth to all of the world.

  285. So I encourage you share it with one person maybe that you know.

  286. And I hope it'll be a blessing for them as it has been for you.

  287. Well, God bless.

  288. You have a wonderful week.

  289. We look forward to coming back next week and studying more about

  290. these gifts of grace.

  291. God bless.
