  1. Hello and welcome to the Middletown Baptist Church Podcast,

  2. where we are proclaiming the truth to the world.

  3. In this podcast series, we're going to be looking into biblical

  4. words that have great significance to our faith.

  5. The name of this series is called the Word of the Week, where

  6. once a week we will dive deeper into these words that we are

  7. familiar with in Scripture.

  8. So come along with me.

  9. Let's study the Word of the Week.

  10. Pastor Josh here.

  11. For the next few weeks, we're going to be looking at the names

  12. of God in accordance to Scripture.

  13. The studies of the names of God is a very important study because

  14. it tells us about the character of God.

  15. And as we get to know God, as we grow in our understanding of him,

  16. it's important for us to grow in who he is and his character.

  17. And so the first name that we're going to be looking at here

  18. this week is the name Jehovah Jireh.

  19. So we're gonna look at what Jehovah Jireh means and where we

  20. can find that name in Scripture.

  21. Jehovah Jireh means the Lord will provide or the Lord who provides.

  22. And so the idea for that would be that God is the great provider.

  23. He's perfect in his provision.

  24. He provides all that we need.

  25. And the story of the name Jehovah Jireh can be found in Genesis,

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  26. chapter 22.

  27. It begins with the command from God to sacrifice Isaac.

  28. Abraham is there.

  29. And Abraham is a man of obedience, though he failed in many

  30. ways leading up to the birth of his son, Isaac.

  31. Isaac is the son of promise.

  32. He is the son of faith.

  33. And prior to Isaac being born, God had promised a great seed to

  34. Abraham and it would be found in a son.

  35. But Abraham tried to follow in his own way to get God to bless his

  36. actions instead of obeying God and being patient in God's provisions.

  37. And so we see that he reached out and had a child with his wife's

  38. handmaid, Hagar.

  39. And through that, we see that there was great pain and sin on both

  40. sides with Abraham and Sarah.

  41. But nonetheless, later on in time, Abraham is commanded by God

  42. to sacrifice his son Isaac, which doesn't make a lot of sense.

  43. It doesn't make any sense.

  44. But Abraham obeys.

  45. He packs up all the things that he needs for the sacrifice.

  46. The wood, the knife.

  47. And In Genesis, chapter 22, they're.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  48. They're traveling.

  49. And Isaac recognizes that they have everything that they need except

  50. for the.

  51. The sacrificial animal, right?

  52. The lamb.

  53. And.

  54. And so in.

  55. In that idea, Isaac is asking Abraham, well, what Are we going

  56. to sacrifice?

  57. Probably a difficult answer for Abraham to give to his son.

  58. But at that very moment, Abraham essentially said, well, you

  59. know what God is going to provide.

  60. And, and that takes a lot of faith.

  61. And so in the, in the case of Abraham and Isaac, we see that God

  62. provides the sacrifice.

  63. Later on in the story, we know that Abraham follows through all

  64. the way up to the moment where he is going to sacrifice his son

  65. and God stops him.

  66. And then right after that, we know that God provides the sacrifice

  67. in the thicket there next to him.

  68. But I think it's so important to see in, in Genesis chapter 22,

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  69. I believe it's verse number eight, Abraham said, My son, God

  70. will provide himself a lamb for the burnt offering.

  71. And so faith took action, faith took obedience, right?

  72. God understood that Abraham had said a lot of things in his life

  73. and God knew Abraham's heart, but Abraham didn't know what the

  74. outcome would be.

  75. And so for God, he knew the story, but for Abraham there, there

  76. wasn't clarity at the beginning, but he knew that God would

  77. in some way provide a sacrifice.

  78. And then if you look even further into the thought process

  79. of Abraham, we see in Hebrews chapter 11, which is a place called

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  80. the hall of faith, Hebrews chapter 11, verse 19, it says in

    Hebrews 11:19

  81. verse, verse 19, accounting that God was able to raise him up

  82. even from the dead, meaning he, he understood that even if he

  83. went through with the sacrifice that God would, would bring

  84. it back to life.

  85. That's, that's a, an amazing type of faith.

  86. And so through that process we know that Abraham trusted God and

  87. God provided a sacrifice for him.

  88. And so the account of Abraham on Mount Moriah is, is a amazing

  89. illustration of faith that was proven by obedience.

  90. It was, it was, it was shown through his obedience.

  91. It was faith that acted.

  92. And so through that we see God's grace see through that we see

  93. God's provision.

  94. And so Jehovah, Jehovah Jireh is, is not looking back on what God

  95. has done necessarily like the Lord, he, he provided for us in the

  96. past, but it's the Lord will provide.

  97. And so another way to look at it would be like, I'm trusting in

  98. God to keep his word.

  99. And what he has said, just because he's kept his word in the

  100. past, that means he'll keep his word in the here and now and

  101. he will keep his word forever.

  102. But there's a bigger picture of the Lord's provision and it's

  103. not just in the material, but we, we know that as God provided

  104. a Sacrifice for Abraham.

  105. There he also provided a sacrifice for us.

  106. Up on the hill of Mount Moriah, God provided a substitute

  107. for Isaac.

  108. And on another hill called Calvary, God provided another sacrifice

  109. for us.

  110. The perfect sacrifice.

  111. And I think it could be summarized in, in many passages of

  112. scripture, but the best one that I can think of is Romans, chapter

    Romans 8:32

  113. 8, verse 32.

  114. It says that he, he spared not his own son, but delivered him up

  115. for us all.

  116. How shall he not with him also freely give us all things meaning

  117. God is a provider.

  118. But he proved that he is the provider through providing for us

  119. the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

  120. I mean, that's his proven love.

  121. Romans, chapter 5, verse 8.

    Romans 5:8

  122. But God commended or demonstrated his love towards us

  123. in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

  124. And so yes, the story of Abraham and Isaac and the provision

  125. there of the sacrifice is a beautiful story of a father and son

  126. and substitution and God's righteous provision.

  127. But the greatest story of provision would be the provision

  128. that was given to us in Jesus Christ.

  129. And so, just as Abraham said in faith that God would provide himself

  130. a lamb, maybe not even knowing the complete understanding of that,

  131. as John the Baptist says in John, chapter 1, verse 28, Jesus

    John 1:28

  132. comes down unto him and John says something amazing.

  133. He says, behold the lamb of God which taketh away the sin of

  134. the world.

  135. And so the recognition there would be that, that Jesus is that

  136. once for all sacrifice.

  137. Jesus is the one who came to pay the price for our sins.

  138. And so we could offer animals, and the Bible speaks in the book

  139. of Hebrews that the blood of animals doesn't completely give us

  140. that once for all sacrifice, but the one that was perfect, the

  141. one who knew no sin, he was the one that came and gave us the

  142. perfect sacrifice so that we could have life.

  143. And so that's the greatest provision of all.

  144. And so Jehovah Jireh, the God who will provide, he provided a sacrifice

  145. to save Isaac.

  146. And that was just a way, a symbolic foreshadowing of the provision

  147. that he would send in his Son for salvation to all the world.

  148. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.

  149. So we look back at our lives and one might ask, what does that

  150. mean for me?

  151. How, how can I claim that promise of God's provision in my

  152. life?

  153. Well, first and foremost, have you trusted in Jesus Christ as your

  154. Savior?

  155. If you have, he's provided for you life, he's provided for you forgiveness.

  156. He's provided for you an eternal destination to spend with

  157. him one day.

  158. So with his provision comes his presence and with his presence

  159. comes his power.

  160. Because when we are saved in Christ, we have the Holy Spirit living

  161. within us.

  162. And so we have the same power that rose Jesus from the dead.

  163. Because by the way, there was the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, but

  164. the sacrifice was complete on the cross, as Jesus says, it is finished,

  165. but it was followed through with life when it came in the resurrection.

  166. And, and so the same power that rose Jesus from the dead, the

  167. Bible says, is the same power living with us.

  168. And so we have God's provision in salvation.

  169. But, but on top of that provision comes the power of God

  170. in our lives.

  171. And the only reason that we can have that power of God in our

  172. lives is because of the presence of God in us through the

  173. Holy Spirit indwelling us.

  174. So it's a beautiful thing to see God's provision through the power

  175. and through the presence.

  176. And, and so I think about the, the provisions of God and so many

  177. times in our Christian walk we think of the provisions only being

  178. the material.

  179. And in many ways God does provide for us materially.

  180. He provides for us finances, he provides for us our needs, our,

  181. our clothing, our vehicles, our homes, our food, our health.

  182. But those can fail us.

  183. You know, our, you know, God can give us finances, but yet, you

  184. know, finances will fail us, our health will fail us.

  185. Now I'm not saying that these aren't great gifts.

  186. The Bible says in James 1:17, all, all these gifts are beautiful

    James 1:17

  187. gifts and they come from God.

  188. So everything good that we have in our life comes from God.

  189. But it's an income, complete understanding of God's provision

  190. if we only think about the material.

  191. Because the deeper blessings would be the blessings of, of the

  192. spiritual nature, the blessing of peace, peace that passeth all

  193. understanding.

  194. The joy of the Lord is our strength.

  195. If you look at the fruit of the Spirit, I mean, all of those

  196. things are gifts, all of those elements of the transformation in

  197. our life is a gift.

  198. And so yes, our family is a gift.

  199. Maybe your job, if you have one, your career is a gift, your,

  200. your, your friends are a gift, your church is a gift.

  201. Whatever you have in your life that's good, we know that's from

  202. God.

  203. And so yes, God is the one who pours out abundant blessings on us.

  204. But we must go back to think about the greatest provision and

  205. that is the provision of salvation.

  206. Because if we had nothing else, if we had no finances, our

  207. health was terrible.

  208. You know, maybe our friends and family had turned their backs

  209. against us.

  210. The Bible says that we have someone who is greater than all.

  211. We have a father to the fatherless.

  212. We have the one who has extended grace to those that don't

  213. deserve it.

  214. And so we look at it.

  215. The greatest provision is salvation.

  216. Everything else is a blessing on top of that.

  217. And so when we think about Jehovah Jireh, many times it's, you

  218. know, I, I need to pay a bill today and I don't have it.

  219. And God provides us the finances and, and that is certainly

  220. an element of Jehovah Jireh, God provided.

  221. But if you look at it from the bigger picture, God has provided

  222. all that we need and he is sufficient and he is wonderful and

  223. he is perfect in every way.

  224. And so one of the character elements of God would be his provisions.

  225. He always provides for his children.

  226. A good parent knows what to bring to his children.

  227. A good parent knows what his child needs.

  228. A good parent understands that if they have the resources, they

  229. will give it.

  230. But I will understand this, and I hope that you can understand

  231. it too.

  232. Though I try to be a loving father and provide everything I can

  233. for my children, I'm limited in my resources.

  234. But God, who, who is, the Bible says, who is rich in mercy

  235. has, has no limit to his resources.

  236. He has no limit to his love.

  237. He has no limit to his provisions.

  238. And so God does the impossible by providing for us everything that

  239. we've ever need.

  240. Philippians, chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  241. My God shall supply all your needs.

  242. What an amazing thing that is, that God will provide everything

  243. that we've ever needed.

  244. Not always what we want, though he does give us things that

  245. we want.

  246. He gives us those blessings, maybe even when we don't even expect

  247. it.

  248. And so we go full circle and go back to, go back to Abraham Faith,

  249. right?

  250. Believing not only that God did provide.

  251. That's easy to see.

  252. It's easy to go back and say, yep, he did this, he did this, he

  253. did this.

  254. Wonderful.

  255. Remember that and use that as fuel for your belief in the future.

  256. The Lord will provide Jehovah Jireh.

  257. Right.

  258. So whatever you're facing tomorrow, whatever you're facing

  259. today, whatever you're facing next week, God will provide.

  260. He will give you the grace needed.

  261. He will give you the forgiveness needed.

  262. He will give you the strength in, in his presence.

  263. And that's an exciting thing.

  264. Jehovah Jireh.

  265. So if I, I, I can challenge you with something here this week.

  266. Meditate upon what it means for God to be Jehovah Jireh in you.

  267. First and foremost, salvation.

  268. Secondly, the spiritual blessings.

  269. Then of course, God providing your needs in every way.

  270. And so I hope that that's something that can encourage you

  271. here this week.

  272. Next week we'll come back and look at another Name of God.

  273. I think it'll be an amazing study as we look at the different

  274. elements of his character, the different elements of his love for

  275. us, the different elements He.

  276. He's so grand, infinitely amazing that we can't mind the depths

  277. of his goodness, we can't mind the depths of his power.

  278. But we can do our best by looking at these names given to us

  279. in scripture.

  280. So Genesis chapter 22, if you want to reference this name, it's

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  281. a Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  282. And you can go back and look at how God is Jehovah Jireh to Abraham

  283. and he's Jehovah Jireh to you as well.

  284. Genesis chapter 22, verse 14.

    Genesis 22:14

  285. The Lord will provide.

  286. And that is true.

  287. He will provide for us.

  288. And so I hope that you have a wonderful rest of your week.

  289. We will talk to you next week when we come back with another Word

  290. of the Week.

  291. And we look forward to hearing from you.
