  1. Hello and welcome to the Middletown Baptist Church podcast,

  2. where we are proclaiming the truth to the world.

  3. My name is Pastor Josh and I want to thank you for listening to

  4. this podcast.

  5. I hope that this podcast can be a blessing to you and strengthen

  6. you in the word of God.

  7. Now come along, let's look into the Bible and see what God has

  8. for us here today.

  9. We're going to go ahead and continue on in our sermon series

  10. looking at the, the rhythms of up in and out.

  11. You guys have been with us the last three weeks, have seen that

  12. we have a new theme for the year, a new vision for the year,

  13. and that's focusing on up in and out, our up relationship with

  14. God, our personal relationship with Him.

  15. The end is that relationship with others within our church family.

  16. And the out is our relationship with others in the community

  17. that need Jesus Christ as Savior.

  18. And so last week, if you were with us in the live stream, we talked

  19. about the up relationship with God, the importance of growing in

  20. our personal walk with Him.

  21. And that starts with faith, and that starts with trusting in

  22. him for his work that he offered for us on the cross and his

  23. work in the resurrection and the gift of grace that he extends

  24. to all of us.

  25. And so that's the first and foremost priority for the believer

  26. is to have our relationship right with the Lord.

  27. And so the second rhythm that we're going to be looking at here

  28. in this study is the rhythm of church culture inwardly.

  29. So our church culture in the, in relationships that we have.

  30. And when.

  31. Anytime I use the word in, in this context, we're talking about

  32. relationships with other Christians, particularly in the church

  33. that we are in here at Middletown Baptist Church.

  34. And so last week we looked at Colossians, chapter three, and we

  35. saw that those first four verses speak of this idea of, of

  36. the Christian, the believer, to commit themselves to a relationship

  37. with God, to seek those things which are above, to seek the things

  38. of the Lord.

  39. And so our first priority must be an authentic growing relationship

  40. with the Lord.

  41. But the Bible says that if we are in love with him, if we're growing

  42. in our love with him, it will manifest itself through love and

  43. devotion to others.

  44. And so it looks like this, if I love God, I love others.

  45. If I serve God, I serve others.

  46. And so it starts with that relationship with God.

  47. What happens often in our world today is that many people try

  48. to skip the part of their relationship with God.

  49. And they say, you know what?

  50. I'm just going to be a good person to other people.

  51. And that's what's going to save me, I'm going to give to the

  52. poor.

  53. I'm.

  54. I'm going to help those in need.

  55. And those are good things, but those are things that don't save

  56. us of for Christ.

  57. So I serve others because I love God, and, and I.

  58. And I serve others because God calls me to follow that path in my

  59. life.

  60. And so ultimately, what we can see here in this case is that our

  61. love for God will be manifested through our love and devotion

  62. to others, especially for those that are believers.

  63. And so there's a few passages of Scripture that we can look to

  64. when it comes to that teaching.

  65. There's, There's a lot that we could look up to in the New Testament,

  66. but particularly In John chapter 13, we see Jesus speaking

    John 13 chapter mention

  67. to his followers, and he gives us a few different thoughts.

  68. Here In John chapter 13, he's already talked about sacrifice and

    John 13 chapter mention

  69. service and servant leadership.

  70. But then later on in John chapter 13, he says in verse number

    John 13 chapter mention

  71. 34, a new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another

  72. as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

  73. So Jesus says, I have shown you what it means to love one another.

  74. And now this new commandment that's giving is to love one another,

  75. to love each other.

  76. And then he says something very interesting in verse number

  77. 35, because oftentimes I do believe that sometimes as Christians,

  78. we feel like it's an optional thing to love others.

  79. Well, I'll be a testimony for Christ in other ways.

  80. But.

  81. But what does it say in verse number 35?

  82. He says, by this, by this love for others, by this, all men know

  83. that ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another.

  84. So the mark of a disciple is one who cares and serves and takes

  85. care of other believers.

  86. That's the idea.

  87. And so the way that the world can see if we're authentic in our

  88. belief to the Lord is, is by the way that we treat others.

  89. So the way that we treat others specifically within the church

  90. matters.

  91. It matters to our testimony, it matters to our faith, it matters

  92. to our spiritual growth.

  93. And so there's other passages of Scripture that speak to this.

  94. In First John 1 John, chapter 4, the.

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  95. The apostle John is writing here, and he's speaking to the idea

  96. of love.

  97. And he's speaking to the fact that God has manifested his love

  98. for us.

  99. As we read this morning, that, that God demonstrated his love toward

  100. us.

  101. Why, that he sent his only begotten Son into this world, that

  102. we might live through him.

  103. But then later on in that passage, he says in verse number

  104. 16, 1st John 4.

  105. 16.

  106. And we have known and believe the love that God hath to us.

  107. God is love.

  108. And he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

  109. Herein is our love made perfect or basically matured, that

  110. we may have boldness in the day of judgment.

  111. Because as he is, so are we in this world.

  112. So, meaning this, as Christians, we are to live our lives,

  113. to be more and more like Christ, because ultimately we will

  114. be like him one day.

  115. Then it says in verse 18, there is no fear in love, but perfect

  116. love casteth out fear, because fear hath torment.

  117. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

  118. We love him because he first loved us.

  119. If a man say, I love God and hateth his brother, he is a liar.

  120. For he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can

  121. he love whom he hath not seen?

  122. And this commandment have we from him that he who loveth God,

  123. love his brother also.

  124. So it can't be any more clear in the fact that if we say we love

  125. God, if we say we're devoted to him, if we're.

  126. If we're growing as Christians, it's directly connected

  127. with how we deal with other people.

  128. And he says, particularly with those that are fellow believers.

  129. And so what does this look like?

  130. What does this love look like?

  131. Well, ultimately, it's shown in Matthew, chapter 22.

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  132. You remember the Pharisees are talking to Jesus, and.

  133. And Jesus is being tested.

  134. And we see a young lawyer who.

  135. He's a professional in the law of God.

  136. And he comes and he asks Jesus this question that is there basically

  137. to tempt him.

  138. What's the greatest commandment?

  139. And the greatest commandment Jesus gives him is to love the Lord

  140. thy God with all thy heart.

  141. That's Matthew, chapter 22, verse 37.

    Matthew 22:37

  142. So that's the up relationship.

  143. He says the first and greatest commandment is to love God with everything,

  144. to believe in him, to trust in him, to allow him, to guide our lives.

  145. And he says, thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,

  146. with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

  147. And so that speaks to the first priority of our relationship

  148. in.

  149. In our Christian walk is our relationship with God.

  150. But then secondly, he says this.

  151. This is the first and great commandment.

  152. And the second is like unto this, thou shalt love thy neighbor

  153. as thyself.

  154. And so right behind, loving God with everything that we have

  155. is to love our neighbor as ourself.

  156. And then he says something very interesting in verse 40 on these

  157. two commandments hang all the law and the prophets, meaning everything

  158. that you see in Scripture hangs on these two core principles.

  159. To love God with everything and to love our neighbor as ourself.

  160. And that speaks to both the up relationship and the inward relationship.

  161. To love our neighbor.

  162. And so even in the great commandment as this is called, Jesus

  163. calls us as Christians to love our neighbor as ourself.

  164. And so we could go to many passages of Scripture in the New

  165. Testament that speak to the importance and the examples of Christian

  166. relationships.

  167. I would encourage you at some point in time, we're not going to

  168. be able to have the time to do it here today, but I would encourage

  169. you to do an extensive study on the one another passages in Scripture.

  170. To love one another, to forgive one another, to forbear one

  171. another.

  172. There's so many passages of Scripture that speaks of our relationship

  173. with one another, but one that I'd like us to turn to, which picks

  174. up where we studied last week, is the book of Colossians, Colossians

  175. chapter three.

  176. This is going to be our main text here this morning, and we will

  177. be digging deeper into what the Bible has to say about our relationships

  178. with others when it comes to the Christian walk.

  179. And so here this morning, I'm going to ask you to pray with me

  180. right now as we get started.

  181. That's a long Runway.

  182. We're going to hit the ground running and we're going to look here

  183. in Colossians chapter three what it means to walk in this in

  184. rhythm when it comes to our relationship with others.

  185. Lord, I pray that you be with us in this time.

  186. I pray that you work in our lives.

  187. I pray that you clear our minds and clear our hearts.

  188. Allow us to see your word this morning not just as something that

  189. can help us, but but as your word says, that's it's profitable

  190. for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction and righteousness

  191. that we can be spiritually mature Christians, that we can see

  192. the importance of not only loving you, but also loving others

  193. and serving others and fellowshipping with one another and

  194. growing in the truth of the word of God.

  195. And so, Lord, I pray that you be in this time.

  196. I pray that if there's someone here today that does not know you

  197. as personal Savior, that today can be the day of salvation, that

  198. we can all walk with the confidence of knowing that you are

  199. our God, that you are our Savior, that you are our king, and

  200. that we can live in light of that in our daily walk here.

  201. And so, Lord, we thank you for your love and your grace.

  202. And we ask all these things in Jesus name.

  203. Amen.

  204. Well, in Philippians chapter three, we looked at this last week.

  205. The first four verses in Excuse me.

  206. Colossians, chapter three, Colossians, chapter three, verses

  207. one through four, speak of this relationship that we have with

  208. God.

  209. It says in verse number two, to set your affections on the things

  210. above, not on things on the earth.

  211. And so the idea is not to get distracted, not to get pulled away

  212. from our priority of loving God and serving God and having that

  213. eternal perspective in everything that we do.

  214. But then we see in verse number five that the way that we

  215. deal with God affects our life by the way that we respond, by the

  216. way that we live.

  217. And he says in verse number five, mortify therefore your members.

  218. Now, what does mortify mean?

  219. Mortify means to kill, to slay, to remove.

  220. So he says, remove, Kill therefore your members which are

  221. upon the earth.

  222. Meaning this.

  223. Don't allow yourself to be so materialistically focused, so fleshly

  224. focused, that we're directed by the things of this world.

  225. He says, don't focus on the things of this world.

  226. And he lists those things.

  227. Fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence

  228. and covetousness, which is idolatry.

  229. He says, these are things that the world is characterized by.

  230. And if we live like the world, that's what we're going to look like.

  231. And so if we want to have victory over these things, verses

  232. 1 through 4 says that the way that we fight that is by growing

  233. closer to God.

  234. Verse 6.

  235. For which things sake, the wrath of God cometh on the children

  236. of disobedience.

  237. We want to.

  238. We.

  239. We want to be characterized by children of obedience, not disobedience.

  240. And he says, this is the way that we used to walk, verse 7, in

  241. which ye also walk sometime when you lived in them.

  242. But now he says, now that you are different, now that you are a

  243. child of God, now that you have been saved, now that you have

  244. been forgiven.

  245. He says, now ye also put off all these things.

  246. Anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out

  247. of your mouth.

  248. Lie not one to another.

  249. And seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.

  250. And so one of the elements of the principle of spiritual growth

  251. is putting off the old ways, turning.

  252. Turning away from those things which characterized us before we

  253. came to Christ.

  254. And that starts with that relationship with God.

  255. So we can't have this type of transformation unless we have that

  256. relationship with God, unless we're growing in his truth.

  257. But Then what we also understand is that this is connected

  258. to our relationship with others.

  259. If we don't handle these struggles in our life, if we don't

  260. deal with these fleshly things that are distracting us, we're not

  261. going to be able to have the relationships with others that we're

  262. called to have.

  263. And so verses 5 through 9 speak of putting off the old man,

  264. putting off the old ways.

  265. And then verse 10 talks about putting on the new.

  266. And so anytime we see in scripture it talking about removing

  267. the old things.

  268. It doesn't just say remove the old things.

  269. It says, put on the new.

  270. So it's like taking off a coat.

  271. We take off the coat and we put a new one on.

  272. Putting off the old ways and putting on the new.

  273. So verse number 10, it says this.

  274. And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after

  275. the image of him that created him.

  276. And so what's the new man?

  277. The new man is the Holy Spirit guiding our lives, working in our

  278. lives, changing our hearts, changing our passions, changing our

  279. actions.

  280. And so the Christian life is not just about avoiding bad things,

  281. even though that is part of it.

  282. The Christian life's not just about stopping all of the sin in

  283. our life.

  284. But on top of that, as we see in Ephesians chapter four and Colossians

  285. chapter three is, it's about putting in and infusing in the good

  286. that God has equipped us with.

  287. Verse 11, where there is neither Greek nor Jew circumcision,

  288. nor uncircumcision, barbarian, cynthian bond, nor free.

  289. But Christ is all and in all he says, how can you find this new

  290. man?

  291. How can you find this new path?

  292. How do you change your life?

  293. Well, it's not through any of these other things that the world

  294. characterizes us by.

  295. It's not about being from this tribe or this tribe, about being

  296. in this socioeconomic class or this one over here.

  297. No, the answer is Christ.

  298. He says that in verse number 11.

  299. There's no more distinction as a believer in Jesus Christ.

  300. We are now walking in his identity.

  301. So it's Christ in us.

  302. It's in Christ that we find this transformation.

  303. And it's in Christ that we can live this way within the church culture.

  304. Because it's not normal.

  305. It's not typical for us to act the way that Colossians chapter three

  306. tells us to act.

  307. That's not the way that we act in our humanity.

  308. In our flesh, we don't want to be patient.

  309. In our flesh, we don't want to be loving.

  310. In our flesh, we don't want to be sacrificial.

  311. But he says, the way that you can find this type of culture, the

  312. way that you can find this type of focus is by walking in this

  313. newness of life that we can only find in Jesus Christ.

  314. So starting in verse number 12, he begins to talk about this

  315. relationship that we have not only with God, but with his family,

  316. with his children.

  317. He says, verse 12, put on, therefore, as the elect of God, as.

  318. As the family of God, as those that are chosen for a.

  319. A path, a.

  320. A purpose.

  321. He says, holy and beloved.

  322. And so I love that phrase, we're holy and beloved.

  323. Holy means to be set aside for a specific purpose.

  324. It doesn't mean completely sinless.

  325. We can't be completely sinless on this side of heaven.

  326. But that word holy means to be set aside for a specific use.

  327. And that's what we are as Christians.

  328. God has a purpose for us.

  329. But then he says holy and beloved.

  330. Beloved just means that we are.

  331. We are loved.

  332. And we know that as first John, chapter four, said that we

  333. love him because he first loved us.

  334. And so he says, this is what you're supposed to do if you are

  335. a child of God.

  336. And then he goes on and say, and says this.

  337. Put on what?

  338. Bowels of mercy.

  339. Now, that's a strange phrase.

  340. Vowels of mercy.

  341. What does that mean?

  342. Essentially, that's a way to say compassion.

  343. We are to have compassion as Christians towards other believers

  344. within the family of God.

  345. Now, now, I know that we're supposed to have compassion on the

  346. loss, but particularly in this case, this is specifically talking

  347. about the family of God looking at those around us.

  348. And sometimes we're tempted to have compassion for the loss, but

  349. maybe not have compassion for those brothers and sisters that are

  350. around us.

  351. And compassion essentially means this, that we can understand

  352. the pain that they're going through, that we can weep with those

  353. that are weeping, that we can laugh with those that are laughing,

  354. that we can be with them through the midst of their pain.

  355. And the Bible says that the greatest act of compassion is Jesus

  356. Christ saying, look, I can identify with you.

  357. I can understand your pain.

  358. Even though he did not sin, the Bible says that he knew all those

  359. things that we have gone through, and yet he lived that perfect

  360. life.

  361. And so Jesus showed compassion.

  362. The Bible says in Matthew, chapter 9 that Jesus was moved with

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  363. compassion, that his bowels were moved with compassion.

  364. Anytime you see the word bowels in the text here, back then,

  365. the bowels, the stomach was the seat of emotions.

  366. Today we use the heart, right?

  367. We say, you know, My heart really broke for that person or my

  368. heart was moved for that person.

  369. Back in this culture, they would say my bowels were moved.

  370. And that speaks to that feeling that you have there in the

  371. pit of your stomach, that emotional feeling.

  372. And so the idea here is to have compassion for those in need,

  373. to have bowels of mercies.

  374. And so one element of how we should live with one another within

  375. the church is to have compassion on those that might be

  376. going through a struggle, might be not where we're at in our

  377. spiritual growth process.

  378. By the way, that what we do need to understand is that within

  379. the church culture, they're going to be people that are different

  380. levels of maturity.

  381. And with different levels of maturity comes different aspects

  382. of growth and pain and, and confusion and miscommunications.

  383. And so as a Christian, we're challenged to live in light of that

  384. compassion.

  385. But there's more.

  386. He says kindness.

  387. Now, kindness is kindness.

  388. Kindness is basically showing that compassion, right?

  389. It's one thing to have compassion for somebody, it's another

  390. thing to move on that compassion.

  391. And that would be an act of kindness.

  392. So the Bible says it's not just about the feeling of having

  393. compassion for somebody, but within the church, I identify something

  394. that I can do, and therefore acting in that kindness allows me

  395. to show my compassion, to show my love, to demonstrate my love.

  396. The Bible speaks over and over again about, it's one thing to say

  397. something, it's another thing to do it right.

  398. Demons.

  399. God.

  400. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.

  401. God loved us so much that he demonstrated his love towards us.

  402. And you've heard me say this over and over again.

  403. I can say all day that I'm a loving husband, that I'm a loving

  404. father, but until I demonstrate that, until I show that

  405. I'm not a loving husband and a loving father.

  406. And so to be a loving Christian means to act in kindness.

  407. But, but, but there's more.

  408. Again, this is a parallel to Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  409. If you get a chance to read Ephesians 4 and Colossians 3 together,

  410. you're going to see how they're tied together.

  411. You're going to see how they're so interrelated.

  412. And I think it's important for us to see this within the church

  413. culture.

  414. And so the next thing that we see after having kindness, he says,

  415. humbleness of mind.

  416. That's humility.

  417. We've talked about this before when we were talking about church

  418. culture.

  419. One core element to our culture within the church must be

  420. a Spirit of humility, let no man think better of himself than

  421. he actually is.

  422. Jesus gave us the perfect example.

  423. In Philippians chapter two.

  424. He humbled himself.

  425. He took the form of a servant.

  426. If all of us have the spirit of humility, we're all going to be

  427. able to put one another before ourselves.

  428. And what's going to happen is we're going to see a community built

  429. upon this humbled spirit.

  430. So he says, having humbleness of mind.

  431. Meekness.

  432. Meekness is strength under control.

  433. Meekness is being able to identify where and when we can act

  434. with discernment and wisdom and.

  435. And having discretion on how we do things within the church.

  436. There are certain times within the church setting that, yes, we

  437. might be in the right, but it doesn't always mean that we act out

  438. in anger.

  439. It doesn't always mean that we act out in judgment.

  440. Jesus could have.

  441. If you think about Jesus as he walked this earth, if we believe

  442. that Jesus is who he says he is, he knew everything about every

  443. person that he was walking by.

  444. Jesus could have had every right to judge every single person

  445. as he was walking by them.

  446. He knew every thought, he knew every action.

  447. But he picked those opportunities to minister at the

  448. right place in the right time.

  449. That's what we would consider discernment.

  450. And Jesus showed love, he showed compassion.

  451. Jesus showed judgment.

  452. Jesus showed, in many cases, strength.

  453. And so meekness is essentially allowing God to control us and not

  454. our emotions to control us.

  455. Moving further here, he says there is long suffering.

  456. That's patience, to have patience with one another.

  457. Now, in a few moments, we're going to look at how these can practically

  458. live out.

  459. But I want you to see these character traits that we should be

  460. striving for within the ministry.

  461. So we see patience more.

  462. Verse 13, forbearing one another.

  463. Forbearance is again looking to this idea of putting others before

  464. ourselves, being patient with other people, offering forgiveness,

  465. offering mercy, offering grace.

  466. More forbearing one another and forgiving one another.

  467. Why?

  468. If any man have a quarrel against any, even as Christ forgave

  469. you, so also do ye.

  470. This is exactly what we see in Ephesians 4:32, forgiving one another.

    Ephesians 4:32

  471. Why?

  472. Because God has forgiven you.

  473. The Bible very clearly teaches that within the church culture, within

  474. our setting of Christianity, we should be ready to forgive.

  475. We should be excited to forgive.

  476. Why?

  477. Because we have been forgiven for so much in our life.

  478. Think about the great forgiveness that you can find in

  479. Jesus Christ.

  480. Think about all the sin in our life and think about how when we

  481. come to Christ in repentance, and in faith that he wipes that away.

  482. Think about how much, how.

  483. How bad it really is when we as Christians aren't willing to forgive.

  484. When someone comes up to us in repentance, well, I'm never forgiving

  485. them, I'm never releasing them.

  486. Who are we to do that if our great Savior has released us from

  487. the guilt and condemnation that we have faced?

  488. And so the Spirit is forgiveness.

  489. Now, again, I think biblical forgiveness needs to be discussed

  490. because a lot of times people think that you have to forgive in

  491. any situation.

  492. And we know that Jesus doesn't forgive everybody.

  493. He offers forgiveness for all.

  494. That's forbearance.

  495. Forgiveness is the restoration process in which a person comes in

  496. repentance, and then there's that forbearance and there's grace

  497. and there's that restoration.

  498. And so what I would tell you is that again, I think that sometimes

  499. people think that forgiveness means that I have to overlook somebody's

  500. sin.

  501. No, God never overlooks our sin.

  502. But what it is, it's that repentant heart that comes back and

  503. there's that extension of forbearing gift of grace that can

  504. ultimately be found.

  505. And so at the end of forgiveness is always restoration.

  506. And that's what we can find within the church.

  507. And so furthermore, he says that there's.

  508. There's more to this.

  509. Verse 14.

  510. And above all these things, put on charity.

  511. Charity is love.

  512. Charity is sacrificial love.

  513. We know that within the church that the motivation must be love.

  514. If I'm serving other people out of anger, that's eventually gonna

  515. hit the roof, it's gonna be a problem, it's gonna be an issue.

  516. If I'm serving out of any other motivation other than love,

  517. I'm going to get to a place where I don't have the desire to

  518. serve and to care for one another.

  519. Again, so he says here at the end, basically, have a heart of love,

  520. which is the bond of perfectness, which, which essentially

  521. brings this place of peace.

  522. Verse 15.

  523. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts.

  524. Peace is only found.

  525. And we can see this in Philippians chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  526. Let the Peace of God which passeth all understanding, rule your

  527. hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

  528. This type of peace can only be found with the unity found in a relationship

  529. with Jesus Christ within the church.

  530. There's a lot of people looking for peace, and they try to

  531. find peace in all the wrong places.

  532. And the only way that we can find peace within the church, the

  533. only find we can place, we can find peace within this world.

  534. Is finding it in the unity of Jesus Christ.

  535. Verse 15, he says, and let the peace of God rule in your hearts,

  536. to which also you're called in one body.

  537. This speaks to unity.

  538. One body and be thankful.

  539. Thankfulness.

  540. And so within the church there's unity.

  541. You'll hear me over and over explain that unity is not uniformity.

  542. Uniformity would be that we all need to look the same.

  543. We all need to agree.

  544. We on every single point.

  545. We all need to essentially be robots, Baptist robots.

  546. That's not what the Bible is teaching.

  547. The Bible is teaching that uniformity is not necessarily what

  548. God calls us to be in.

  549. God actually calls us to be diverse.

  550. But in the diversity comes the unity.

  551. Not all of us can serve it the same capacity.

  552. Not all of us are gifted in the same ways, and that's a good

  553. thing.

  554. But the Bible says that, that we can come together with our distinct

  555. differences in our makeup and come together with one purpose, and

  556. that is unity.

  557. And what does that bring us?

  558. That brings us thankfulness, he says, and be thankful.

  559. One of the things within the church that we forget about is just

  560. the opportunity to thank the Lord and to thank others for what

  561. is happening in our lives.

  562. We often live in such a very critical environment.

  563. Many times within our life we have a lack of gratitude.

  564. And essentially we're living in bitterness because we're not thankful

  565. for anything that we have in our lives.

  566. We can never be satiated.

  567. We always want more, right?

  568. If we, we get five things, we want six things, okay, if someone

  569. was nice to me for a week, I want them to be nice to me for two

  570. weeks, then.

  571. Then I can love them.

  572. We're never satisfied in our human nature.

  573. We're never satisfied in our flesh.

  574. And so what the Bible says is there's a point that we say, lord,

  575. I am so thankful.

  576. I'm so thankful for what you've given me.

  577. And that thankfulness should spill out to thankfulness for other

  578. people.

  579. And the way that we show our thanks for other people is by telling

  580. them, by demonstrating our thankfulness, and by reciprocating

  581. that love to them that God has called us to, to show.

  582. And so verse 16, after he says being thankful, he says, this is

  583. what it's supposed to look like.

  584. Verse 16.

  585. Let the word of Christ.

  586. Let the word of God dwell in you richly in all wisdom.

  587. One core element to the inward relationship is that it's all based

  588. on the Word of God.

  589. We talk about the Word of God.

  590. We meditate upon the Word of God.

  591. We share the Word of God.

  592. We we testify of the Word of God, folks.

  593. The Bible should be the core element to our conversation.

  594. I know for me, the, the tendency is to be so comfortable

  595. talking about the weather, talking about sports, talking about

  596. the things of this world, and we just kind of miss the point of.

  597. The conversations that we should be having are predominantly

  598. based around the truths of God's word and his wisdom.

  599. And then it goes on to say, teaching and admonishing one another.

  600. The idea here would be that we're to teach one another in classroom

  601. settings, in settings in private, in settings in public, on

  602. one, on one relationships.

  603. All of this could be explained with the idea of teaching.

  604. And then he goes on to say, exhorting, we're teaching and admonishing.

  605. Admonishing is another word for exhorting.

  606. Exhorting just means to challenge one another, to encourage

  607. one another.

  608. And then it's manifested in what it says in psalms and hymns

  609. and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the

  610. Lord.

  611. So it's corporate worship.

  612. That's why we get together and worship together.

  613. You could worship God from home, you can worship God from your

  614. car, you can worship God from anywhere individually.

  615. But corporate worship is unique.

  616. And the Bible calls us to come together, to do this together, so

  617. that we can encourage one another, so that we can teach one

  618. another.

  619. In verse 17, he says, and whatsoever ye do in word or deed,

  620. so the Bible says we're to do things in our words and what we say

  621. and in deeds, and what we do, whatsoever we say in word and deed,

  622. do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the

  623. Father by him.

  624. And so the Bible tells us that what we do within the church should

  625. be in what we say, it should be in what we do.

  626. But it's all wrapped around what?

  627. Not around myself, not around money, not around a program, not

  628. around a building.

  629. But he says, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks

  630. to God and the Father by him.

  631. And so we essentially see the marching orders for how the relationships

  632. that we're supposed to have should look like within the church.

  633. And so again, like I mentioned, this is a parallel to

  634. Ephesians, chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  635. Both of those passages speak of how we should live our lives in

  636. Christ.

  637. And so it starts in Colossians, chapter three, verse

  638. one, with that up relationship with God, which changes what we believe

  639. in, it changes how we act in our personal life, and it changes

  640. how we act when it deals with other people, when it comes to other

  641. Christians.

  642. And so how will this look practically for the next few Minutes.

  643. I just want us to look at biblically speaking, how does this

  644. practically live out within the church?

  645. Well, it looks like this.

  646. It looks like edification.

  647. What is edification?

  648. Edification is building up one another.

  649. We saw in Colossians chapter 3 this idea of building one another

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  650. up in the truth, building one another up in love, building one

  651. another up in forgiveness.

  652. And so with patience, with meekness, with kindness, with thankfulness,

  653. all these character traits, it's done so that we can build one

  654. another up in Christ.

  655. The idea of edification would be this picture of not just building

  656. them up, but leaning on them and actually holding somebody up.

  657. There's times in our life where we need to hold up others in

  658. the truth of Jesus Christ.

  659. How we do that is through those character traits that are listed

  660. there in Colossians chapter three.

  661. One of our goals should be, when we come into the church, is

  662. to edify other Christians.

  663. I often hear within the church setting, what is going to be done

  664. for me today?

  665. Okay, I'm coming in.

  666. What is the church going to do for me?

  667. And I understand what we mean by that because we live in a culture

  668. that's about us.

  669. But what if we came into the church setting, the church culture

  670. and said, what can I bring to other people?

  671. How could I build someone else up today?

  672. How could I intentionally today look to strengthen another

  673. Christian?

  674. And I think it would change the way that our churches responded

  675. and reacted and fellowshiped and served and had classes.

  676. All of these things would change if we came in saying, how

  677. can I build another Christian up in Christ today?

  678. So edification, there's another word.

  679. It's a biblical word, but I've already mentioned it this, this morning

  680. and other settings.

  681. Exhortation.

  682. Exhortation is.

  683. Is simply challenging, encouraging, and ultimately coming

  684. alongside of someone and pulling them through and lifting

  685. them up in the midst of difficulty.

  686. So edification is more about building that person up.

  687. Exhortation is about spurring them forward.

  688. There's a time and a place to edify somebody because they might

  689. be needing that strength in the Lord, but there's that time and

  690. a place to move someone forward.

  691. Because a lot of us have gotten comfortable with where we

  692. are in church.

  693. A lot of us have gotten comfortable where we are in our Christian

  694. walk.

  695. A lot of us have gotten very comfortable in our marriages and

  696. our homes and our workplaces.

  697. And the Bible says there is a time and a place for us to be spurred

  698. forward for the cause of the kingdom, a passage of Scripture that

  699. speaks directly to that.

  700. And you're going to hear Me talk about it a lot this year when

  701. it comes to our church culture, that it's found in Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  702. chapter 10.

  703. Hebrews chapter 10, verse 24 speaks specifically about this very

    Hebrews 10:24

  704. thing about exhortation.

  705. Now, now, oftentimes exhortation is taken in the wrong

  706. setting, either for two, two reasons.

  707. One, people don't exhort in love.

  708. Or number two, people don't receive exhortation with the right

  709. spirit.

  710. It's received in the spirit of pride.

  711. So Hebrews chapter 10, verse 24 says, and let us consider one

    Hebrews 10:24

  712. another, let us think about one another to provoke unto love

  713. and to good works.

  714. Meaning this.

  715. I need to think about my fellow brother or sister in Christ.

  716. I need to care for them, I needed to have compassion for them.

  717. I need to have love for them.

  718. And in doing so, what will I do?

  719. It says, and provoke unto love, unto good works.

  720. Now, provoke literally means to stir up, to poke, to, to turn

  721. over.

  722. And it doesn't mean, in a negative sense, provoking someone

  723. to sin.

  724. That's actually what we often do within our lives.

  725. We, for knowing it or not knowing it, we provoke other people

  726. to sin.

  727. The Bible says exhortation is to exhort one another in love and

  728. in good works.

  729. Sometimes exhortation is done with the wrong spirit, like, hey,

  730. what's wrong with you?

  731. Why aren't you in church?

  732. What's your unrepentant sin that you need to deal with today?

  733. And it comes from a very judgmental spirit.

  734. We've got to, again, when we're exhorting, do it with the spirit

  735. of love, a spirit of restoration, a spirit of building

  736. one another up.

  737. And so what I would encourage you to do is think about ways in

  738. which you could come into the church and say, I want to exhort

  739. others.

  740. I want to provoke others to love and good works.

  741. That might mean just serving as an example.

  742. It might mean to share with someone something that you're going

  743. through in your life by way of testimony.

  744. It might mean that you need to call someone or text someone or encourage

  745. someone.

  746. If you haven't seen them in church for three or four weeks.

  747. Hey, how you doing?

  748. What's going on?

  749. How can I pray for you?

  750. And the idea for us in exhortation is to come alongside

  751. and push people forward.

  752. And then verse 25, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves

  753. together as the manner of some is, but exhorting, there's our word,

  754. exhorting one another.

  755. And so much the more, as you see the day approaching, some people

  756. ask, pastor, why do we Meet so much at our church.

  757. Why do we have Sunday morning, Sunday night, Wednesday night?

  758. Why do we have something almost every night of the week?

  759. The reality is, is I take.

  760. I take this verse as.

  761. As something that's important.

  762. I want to meet all the more as we see the day approaching.

  763. I know that not everyone can be at every single situation, every

  764. single day, every single opportunity.

  765. But what I will say is I want you to have as many opportunities

  766. as you can at this church to fellowship and to assemble with other

  767. Christians so that you can be provoked and to provoke others to

  768. love and to good works.

  769. And so we see edification, exhortation.

  770. We see fellowship.

  771. Koinonia, that's the Greek word for it.

  772. We need to fellowship more.

  773. We need to be around each other.

  774. But that word fellowship is so much more than just getting together

  775. physically.

  776. Fellowship means getting together with a purpose.

  777. The purpose of exhortation, the purpose of edification, the purpose

  778. of education, the purpose of all of these things that we've been

  779. talking about.

  780. We fellowship so that we can strengthen one another.

  781. Proverbs tells us that iron sharpens iron.

  782. So.

  783. So does a man sharpen the countenance of his friend.

  784. We need each other.

  785. God does not want us to be alone.

  786. God does not want us to be isolated.

  787. God does not want us to try to figure out this path on our own.

  788. Yes, you have God, but also God says that it's a gift to have

  789. other fellow brothers and sisters in Christ coming alongside

  790. of us.

  791. Some of us typically have more of an inclination either to be around

  792. people or not to be around people.

  793. I would encourage you, whether you're introverted or extroverted,

  794. find.

  795. Find connections within the church.

  796. Find connections with other brothers and sisters in Christ.

  797. We're going to be offering as a church multiple ways in which you

  798. can get involved.

  799. We're going to be talking a lot about small groups this year.

  800. Small groups are essentially smaller groups than what you see

  801. right here, right now.

  802. This is, depending on your perspective, this could be considered

  803. a small church or a big church.

  804. It depends on where you come from.

  805. But this is definitely more than who you could be personal with

  806. at one point.

  807. Okay, I've tried it.

  808. I've tried to sit at the front door as everyone leaves and tried

  809. to make a personal connection with every person.

  810. It's completely impossible to do every single Sunday.

  811. But what I can say is that there is a time and there is a way

  812. in which all of us can make some personal connections with a

  813. few people.

  814. And I would encourage you to do that.

  815. I would Encourage you to find a small group.

  816. We're going to be starting many small groups within our church.

  817. Want you to be involved with one.

  818. We're going to have some in the morning, we're going to have

  819. some in the evening.

  820. We're going to have some on Sundays.

  821. We're going to have some every night of the week.

  822. Every.

  823. And I want you to try to find those.

  824. But what I would say is I want you to pray about three different

  825. options for you to get involved with.

  826. Okay?

  827. There's three different ways that you can get involved with a

  828. small group within our church.

  829. Number one, which is probably the most difficult at the beginning

  830. is, Is leading a small group.

  831. Maybe some of you, God is pressing on your heart to lead a

  832. small group.

  833. You might say, I have no clue how to do that.

  834. Well, you're not going to be alone.

  835. We're going to help you, we're going to train you.

  836. But ultimately, it's going to take leadership.

  837. It's going to take commitment, it's going to take planning.

  838. Maybe some of you could lead a small group within your home, within

  839. the church, within the community.

  840. Also.

  841. I'd say number two, though, another thing that you can get involved

  842. with is if you don't know how to lead a small group, you can be

  843. what's called an apprentice there.

  844. We have multiple small group leaders within the church that would

  845. love to sit with you and show you what they do in their small group.

  846. And maybe eventually you could get to a place of leading a small

  847. group.

  848. That would be a wonderful thing.

  849. But then thirdly, if you don't want to lead and you don't want to

  850. be an apprentice, to be a member, to be a part of one.

  851. And so for the next few months, you're going to be seeing

  852. various small groups popping up within our church.

  853. I would encourage you to get involved with one in one of those

  854. three ways.

  855. Then we see another thing.

  856. Within fellowship, we see service.

  857. The Galatians, chapter 6, verse 10.

    Galatians 6:10

  858. I want you guys to see this with me because I love the way that

  859. it's worded here.

  860. Galatians, chapter 6, verse 10.

    Galatians 6:10

  861. He talks about this idea of doing good to others, specifically

  862. those that are in the household of faith.

  863. Now, we're called to do good to others, whether they're saved

  864. or unsaved.

  865. But the Bible says to particularly be more careful to serve

  866. others that are inside of the household of faith.

  867. Galatians, chapter 6, verse 10 says, as we have, therefore, opportunity,

    Galatians 6:10

  868. meaning you can't do good for everybody.

  869. It's just not Possible.

  870. I can't.

  871. I can't do everybody do.

  872. Everyone's like, for example, let's say someone was like, hey,

  873. Pastor, I really need you to help me out with this today, okay?

  874. Need you to come over, maybe my car.

  875. You wouldn't want me working on your car, but let's just pretend

  876. in a perfect world that I know how to work on your car, okay?

  877. And I want to come help, but I can't do everybody's car.

  878. I don't have the capabilities.

  879. I don't have the time.

  880. But at the end of the day, some of us might say, you know what?

  881. As the opportunity arises, as the door opens, so.

  882. So a lot of times people get so overwhelmed with this idea of

  883. how can I serve other people, I can't keep up with everybody.

  884. They.

  885. It doesn't ever ask us to do that.

  886. It says, as the opportunity arises.

  887. And so verse 10 says, as we therefore have the opportunity, let

  888. us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the

  889. household of faith.

  890. The idea would be, is God opens doors for you to find service

  891. opportunities and projects in which you can help others do it.

  892. Find that as the outlet to show your love for other people.

  893. And so that's another aspect of how this looks practically.

  894. Then we see teaching.

  895. 2nd Timothy 2.

  896. 2.

  897. 2nd Timothy 22 tells us that there is this.

  898. Paul says to Timothy, timothy, as I have taught you, you teach others

  899. so that they can teach others.

  900. I wouldn't.

  901. I would encourage you to think about how you can be in some element

  902. of teaching, whether it's in a classroom setting or whether it's

  903. just by the way that you live your life.

  904. You know, some of the greatest lessons I've learned have been from

  905. people that weren't teaching me in a classroom setting.

  906. It's by a lesson that they taught me in a real life principle,

  907. a real life scenario.

  908. And so I would ask you to pray about maybe how you could allow yourself

  909. to teach others or be taught by others within the church.

  910. Teaching is such a huge aspect that we need to be thinking about

  911. within the church.

  912. And so if we took all those things, edification, exhortation,

  913. fellowship, service, teaching, what does that look like?

  914. Well, that essentially encapsulates what we talk about when

  915. we talk about the word discipleship.

  916. So our goal for the UP relationship is faith growth and

  917. ultimately confidence in Jesus Christ as your savior.

  918. But then what's our goal in the inward relationship?

  919. Our inward relationships within the church is a relationship

  920. of discipleship.

  921. So if you hear me say the word discipleship now, you Know what I

  922. mean?

  923. It's, it's the edification, it's the exhortation, it's the teaching,

  924. it's the service, it's the fellowship, it's the loving, it's

  925. the caring, it's the compassion.

  926. It's showing people essentially what it means to be a

  927. follower of Christ, to be a disciple maker, I must be a disciple

  928. myself.

  929. So that's how we work it up in and then eventually we're going to

  930. talk next week about out.

  931. But I want you to pray about your inward relationships, your relationships

  932. with other Christians and in this context within the church.

  933. Do you know anybody?

  934. You say, well, Pastor, I've been coming to this church for 20

  935. years and I don't know anybody.

  936. Well, I'm going to say, I'm going to try to say a few things

  937. that are kind in that regard.

  938. Number one, I understand that maybe you're shy, maybe you haven't

  939. come out of your comfort zone yet.

  940. But I would encourage you to do is find a relationship with someone.

  941. Sometimes it takes to get out of our comfort zone and introduce

  942. ourselves to somebody.

  943. If you say, well, Pastor, I don't know if that's something that

  944. I can do.

  945. Come to me and I promise you I'll go introduce you to somebody,

  946. I'll get you involved in those.

  947. I got a small group, I got like four small groups this week

  948. that you can come to and you can come and you can be my special

  949. guest.

  950. I would love for you to meet people.

  951. And so it's a matter of not just the opportunity, but also the

  952. willingness to be involved with somebody, be involved with a

  953. community and be involved with a relationship, friendships.

  954. You're not going to be able to be personal friends with every single

  955. person within the church.

  956. But what I would encourage you to do is really think about those

  957. one another relationships.

  958. Think about those character traits that are laid out there and

  959. don't just think about those character traits.

  960. Well, I hope that people are loving to me.

  961. I hope that people are kind to me.

  962. I hope that people are going to be forgiving to me.

  963. Well, yeah, we hope that too.

  964. But at the end of the day, I want to take the initiative to be

  965. the change that I want to see within the culture.

  966. You know, if I want to be friendly, you know, the best thing,

  967. you know, if I want people to be friendly to me, the biblically

  968. speaking, the best thing for me to do is to be friendly to others.

  969. If I want to experience forgiveness, the best thing to do

  970. is extend forgiveness to others.

  971. Why?

  972. Because Jesus has given Us that demonstration in our life, to

  973. take the initiative to start that motion, to, to move forward

  974. and to not let my decisions be predicated upon other people's decisions

  975. in the church, but allow my decisions to be predicated upon what

  976. Jesus Christ has done for me.

  977. And so, folks, none of us are going to get this perfectly.

  978. I, I'm, I'm not perfect in this, but one of my prayers for 2026

  979. and for the rest of my Christian walk is that I find the

  980. value in those inward relationships within the church culture.

  981. That, that we need to build each other up, that we need to pray

  982. for one another, that, that, that we need to share with one another,

  983. that we need to help one another.

  984. And the way that we do that is, yes, corporate worship is, is

  985. amazing.

  986. We need to get together in corporately worship.

  987. Sunday mornings are the highlight of my week.

  988. I think about this, I pray for this, I get excited for this.

  989. I wish church could.

  990. I wish it was like the old days where we could just do church

  991. all day.

  992. But I understand that we don't live in that culture anymore.

  993. But what I will say is this, on top of corporate worship, we should

  994. also find a secondary connection within the church, within

  995. the families, that we can find those personal relationships that,

  996. that we can grow together and that we can do life together.

  997. And it might be someone that's similar to your demographic, it might

  998. be someone that's similar in your age group, it might be someone

  999. similar to your lifestyle.

1000. But at the end of the day, I do believe that there's value in

1001. seeing difference ages and different maturity levels meeting

  1002. together.

  1003. Right?

  1004. That's the.

1005. What the Bible talks about in the book of Titus, that the mature

1006. folks pass along those things to the younger folks.

1007. So I would really challenge our church to say this.

  1008. Hey, hey.

1009. How about some of the older folks connect with some of the younger

1010. folks and see that connection there.

1011. It might be a little uncomfortable at first, but through

1012. that process, we can see amazing things happening the way

1013. that God ordained it to be.

1014. Maybe someone from a different culture meet someone from a different

1015. culture and we come together and we talk about Jesus and how Jesus

1016. changed our life and how he works in our life today.

1017. So I would have you pray.

1018. I'm going to be praying about how God can work in our lives to

1019. see the spiritual growth happen with the inward relationships

  1020. here at our church.

1021. Well, we're going to go ahead and have a time of invitation now.

1022. What I'm going to ask you to do, if you can stand with me, every

1023. head bowed, every eye closed as the music plays, we're going to

1024. have a time of reflection, we're going to have a time of response.

1025. And here this morning, what I'd like you to do is I'd like you

1026. to inspect your life on your.

1027. Not only your relationship with God, even though that's the

1028. first and foremost, biggest priority that you should have is

1029. your relationship with the Lord.

1030. But secondly, speaking, I would say this, where's your relationship

1031. with others within the church?

1032. Remember those verses that we read at the very beginning?

1033. If we love God, we love others.

1034. If, if we want people to see that we're disciples of Jesus Christ,

  1035. what do we do?

  1036. We love one another.

1037. And so I would encourage you and challenge you to think about

1038. what that means for you within the church setting.

1039. Maybe you say, I, I haven't gotten involved with anything for

  1040. a long time.

1041. My life has just been busy, been difficult.

  1042. I understand that.

1043. But it's never too late to just get that right right now.

1044. It's never too late just to come forward and say, you know what,

1045. I need to get my life straight.

1046. When it comes to the area of, of discipleship.

1047. Either I want to be someone that's leading or I want to be someone

  1048. that's following.

1049. I want to be someone that's growing in the truth of who Jesus

1050. Christ is and what he has done for me and for others.

1051. So I'm going to pray now.

1052. If you need Jesus as your personal savior, maybe you haven't

1053. even started that upward relationship.

1054. What I would say now is initially start with that.

1055. Start with faith in Jesus Christ.

1056. Start with knowing that he alone can save.

1057. Jesus died on the cross for your sins.

1058. He resurrected from the dead on the third day and he gives us

  1059. new life.

1060. And so if we just believe and trust, he can give us salvation.

1061. Lord, I pray that you be in this time of invitation, work in

  1062. hearts and lives.

1063. I pray that you can challenge us to grow in those inward relationships

1064. that you've called us to live in.

1065. We ask all these things in Jesus name.

  1066. Amen.

1067. As the music plays, follow as the Lord leads here this morning.
