  1. I got joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart. Where?

  2. Down in my heart. No, no, where? Down in my heart.

  3. So you've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in

  4. your heart? Down in my heart. But how long is

  5. it going to be there? Oh, to stay. And are you

  6. so happy? I'm so happy. So very happy. So very

  7. happy. You've got the love of Jesus in your heart.

  8. It's in my heart. So you're very happy. So is

  9. it just me, or does that actually sound like

  10. really circumstantial? I feel like, so I think

  11. that that's an interesting, I mean, so like we

  12. all grew up, we didn't all grow up. I didn't

  13. grow. I have still not grown up. Let's just,

  14. let's be honest. This is a, this is part of the

  15. reason we're filming a podcast is that we were

  16. trying to get in live action. This is actually

  17. like the, what is that old movie with that old

  18. dude who like his life is a TV show and he doesn't

  19. realize it. The Truman Show. This is the Truman

  20. Show. Oh, God, you just referred to the Truman

  21. Show as that old show. This is the Truman Show

  22. for your spiritual development. Yes, yes. That

  23. very, very old, extremely old movie. Yes. When

  24. did it come out? Like, what, 80 -something? I

  25. don't know. I'm pretty sure it came out in the

  26. 2000s. I'm pretty sure it had a two at the beginning

  27. of when it came out. I might've been alive for

  28. this. Hold on. I'm going to give it. Oh my God,

  29. dude, that's actually a really like good movie.

  30. Like it's a good surface level movie, but at

  31. the same time, like when you start to do like

  32. introspective on that movie, like it gets to

  33. like, it's a good movie. It's a good movie. Oh,

  34. so the Truman show is PG. So you're still in

  35. the clear. Yeah, we can still, we can still,

  36. we keep talking about this movie, but yeah, no,

  37. I am one year younger than that movie. What year

  38. did it come out? It came out in 98. Oh no, it

  39. does have a 19 at the beginning. And so in all

  40. fairness, like I'm probably less than a year

  41. older than that movie because I'm January of

  42. 99. So I'm so sorry to everybody out there who

  43. was born before January of 99. Because time existed.

  44. Time existed, yeah. But no, there's two distinct

  45. directions that we take here. One, I think in

  46. a very real sense, the Pursuing Jesus podcast

  47. is us, Truman, showing our spiritual development.

  48. In that, so I haven't seen the movie, so I actually

  49. don't know. I may be spitting completely off

  50. here, but we're doing spiritual growth in public.

  51. There have been things that I have learned on

  52. this podcast that I did not know before. Um,

  53. and, and, and like you shared with me, there've

  54. been things that like you didn't know before,

  55. or like I've been encouraged by things that I've

  56. heard on this podcast as we've been putting this

  57. together. Like, so like the process of discussing

  58. like our own spiritual experience in the text

  59. is spiritually formative for us. And so like,

  60. that's kind of one of the reasons I feel like

  61. we're doing this is to, is not just like to equip

  62. our people, but also for them just to see what

  63. it looks like for two dudes to sit down and try

  64. to follow Jesus in the same room. And you know

  65. what I love about that is, and it's one of the

  66. things that is deep in my personality of how

  67. I preach and what I do with my students and even

  68. on Sunday mornings, and that is I am constantly

  69. trying to make sure that I'm not on a pedestal.

  70. And I don't even mean from a spiritual aspect.

  71. I mean, like, I want people to know, like, I

  72. am human, right? I am not set apart. spiritually

  73. in a way because I am a pastor. You don't have

  74. an extra dose of the Holy Spirit. No, exactly.

  75. And so that's one of the things. And that's why

  76. I love using my own personal stories. I love

  77. using my own failures. Right now I'm writing

  78. my sermon that I'm going to be giving tomorrow

  79. night to our students, and I'm opening with a

  80. really bad story of when I deserve to get beat

  81. up in school because of my mouth. It makes me

  82. look bad. I want to do those things. I want people

  83. to know, hey, I'm real. I'm a real person. I

  84. can relate to what's going on. I'm an idiot too.

  85. Theologically, I think the word that Jesus uses

  86. is sheep, not idiot. But I get the point that

  87. you're trying to come across with. He also uses

  88. the word fool. He does, but he does not call,

  89. I don't know. That's neither here nor there,

  90. and I'm not going to fight you. It's a different

  91. context. It is a different context. I was meeting

  92. with a guy who has followed Jesus a lot longer

  93. than I have, relatively recently. And he is often

  94. telling me, like, Ben, God wants to meet you

  95. in the present. Not in the past. Although he's

  96. there, you're not. Not in the future. He's there,

  97. you're not. And so the only place that you can

  98. genuinely... meet God is exactly where you're

  99. sitting in that room, but also in terms of the

  100. focus of your heart. And so I feel like some

  101. of what you and I do here in Pursuing Jesus is

  102. we engage with the text in the present. To the

  103. best of our abilities, of course, we talk about

  104. what we're going to talk about beforehand a little,

  105. not much, but performative spiritual. growth

  106. is not spiritual growth. And so for this to be

  107. really be of any value for me personally, I have

  108. to come at this with the real Ben Smith, not

  109. necessarily with like the polished pastor Ben

  110. Smith. 100%. I mean, if this is truly going to

  111. be a pursuing Jesus podcast and the two hosts

  112. are not pursuing Jesus, it's not going to work.

  113. No, it'd be pursuing tacos for you, honestly.

  114. So there's this new taco place in Albemarle that

  115. I really want to try that I've been hearing about.

  116. It's located in a tent, not in a building, and

  117. it's on the corner where... Man, forget food

  118. laws. I know. I want to go try this place, and

  119. hopefully I might be trying it tonight if it's

  120. there. I heard it's one of those things where

  121. maybe they're there, maybe they're not, if they're

  122. set up. So yes, I do like to pursue tacos. I

  123. am literally trying to pursue this place tonight,

  124. but at the same time. More importantly, I need

  125. to be pursuing Jesus. And that's the heart of

  126. why we sit down, why we put headphones on, and

  127. we sit in front of these mics, is as we're doing

  128. our daily devotionals separately, and then we

  129. get to come together and like, hey, man, this

  130. is what I learned from Jesus this week. And we

  131. get to do that with microphones and with our

  132. church family. I hope that they get to learn

  133. from that as well. I think that practice is something

  134. that we have to cultivate, though. I think there's

  135. a natural impulse in us to want to form an image

  136. or to hide who we really are or what we're really

  137. thinking. Dude, that goes back to our first grandparents,

  138. Adam and Eve. The first thing they do when they

  139. realize that they have royally messed up is hide

  140. in the garden from God and sow fig leaves to

  141. cover their nakedness. But it is only through

  142. being seen as we really are that we can relate

  143. to God that way. Otherwise, we're not bringing

  144. the real us, and he's not shaping the real us.

  145. But it is something different to do in front

  146. of an audience. Oh, 100%. Even though this is

  147. audio only, still, we could sit here, we could

  148. be fake, and we could do those things. It's a

  149. discipline. But I would rather... I think our

  150. church is going to learn more, and then we ourselves

  151. are going to grow more the more honest we are.

  152. 100%. 100%. Dude, man. Well, hey, so I guess

  153. we're not going to bash children's Christian

  154. worship songs anymore, so that's probably a good

  155. thing. We'll move on from that. We'll save that

  156. for another day. That'll be another topic, like

  157. songs we grew up singing. Let's look at the theology

  158. of this. That's an interesting question that

  159. I'm not going to pursue hardcore today, but as

  160. a worship pastor, The songs that I put in the

  161. mouth of our congregation are so important. Our

  162. people and me are going to remember those easier

  163. than even the best sermon sometimes. There are

  164. certain moments that affect us for sure, but

  165. when you give something pitch and melody and

  166. meter and rhythm. It gives it more the ability

  167. to memorize much easier. You remember those things.

  168. If your songs aren't actually accurate to what

  169. the Bible says or to the reality of the Christian

  170. life, you could end up in trouble because you

  171. start to believe that stuff when you sing it.

  172. It's very true. Yeah, it is. So I think we're

  173. going to start opening up our pursuing Jesus

  174. devotionals. Sean gradually shepherding me in

  175. the direction our conversation needs to go. Thanks,

  176. G. So what day are you looking at there, buddy?

  177. Oh, man. I'm looking at July 4th, Rockets, Red

  178. Glare, and All. And this is Luke 19, 11 through

  179. 28. So this is a tremendously difficult parable,

  180. or it was to me initially when I first came to

  181. it. Maybe just the mindset I came into it. So

  182. this is a fat chunk of text. I'm going to read

  183. it anyways. Just go for it. Let's just run it.

  184. So this is Luke 19, 11 through 28. And as they

  185. heard these things, side note, this comes directly

  186. after the story of Zacchaeus. The wee little

  187. man? The wee little man was he. I mean, there's

  188. a kid's song there. Keep moving, keep moving.

  189. As they heard these things, he, who is Jesus,

  190. proceeded to tell a parable because he was near

  191. Jerusalem and because they supposed that the

  192. kingdom of God was to appear immediately. He

  193. said, therefore, a nobleman went into a far country

  194. to receive for himself a kingdom, then return.

  195. Calling 10 of his servants, he gave them 10 minas

  196. and said to them, engage in business until I

  197. come. But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation

  198. after him saying, we do not want this man to

  199. reign over us. And when he returned, having received

  200. the kingdom, he ordered the servants to whom

  201. he had given money to be called to him. that

  202. he might know what they had gained by doing business.

  203. First came before him, saying, Lord, your mina

  204. has made ten minas more. And he said to him,

  205. Well done, good servant. Because you have been

  206. faithful in very little, you shall have authority

  207. over ten cities. What? And the second came, saying,

  208. Lord, your mina has made five minas. And he said

  209. to him, And you are to be over five cities. And

  210. then another came saying, Lord, here is your

  211. mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief.

  212. For I was afraid of you because you are a severe

  213. man. You take what you did not deposit. You reap

  214. what you did not sow. And he said to him, I condemn

  215. you with your own words, you wicked servant.

  216. You knew that I was a severe man taking what

  217. I did not deposit and reaping what I did not

  218. sow. Why then did you put my money in the bank?

  219. And at my coming, I might have collected it with

  220. interest. And he said to those who stood by,

  221. take the mina from him and give it to the one

  222. who has 10 minas. And they said to him, Lord,

  223. he already has 10 minas. I tell you that everyone

  224. who has more will be given, but to the one who

  225. has not, even what he has will be taken away.

  226. But as for these enemies of mine who did not

  227. want me to reign over them, bring them here and

  228. slaughter them before me. Whoa. Sean, what is

  229. your overall vibe or impression when you come

  230. to this text? Just looking at the idea of, I

  231. think people are given different amounts from

  232. the Lord. And are you being faithful with what

  233. the Lord has given you? I mean, there is some

  234. definite different ways that we're going to be

  235. able to look at this and personalize this text.

  236. So yeah, tell me why you chose this one. So I

  237. zeroed in. So I feel like kind of the climax

  238. of the story, like the... big boss battle, you

  239. know, in terms of action movie things is where

  240. the master comes back and he's kind of getting

  241. account for the different people, the people

  242. have given, he's given money to, and then he

  243. talks with the wicked servant. Now, when we read

  244. a text, like sometimes the authors of scripture

  245. are kind to kind of give us a purpose statement

  246. before or after. Right. And so like, like in

  247. verse 11, Jesus tells us parable because he's

  248. near Jerusalem. And because the Jews suppose

  249. that the King, And you see that further on because

  250. he's about to walk into Jerusalem and they're

  251. going to say, Hosanna, Hosanna. God save us.

  252. God save us. They're going to call him the son

  253. of David. They will label him as the Messiah.

  254. And so partially the text tells us that Jesus

  255. is confronting their preconceived ideas about

  256. what it looks like for God to come reign in his

  257. kingdom. But kind of with that context in mind,

  258. I zeroed in on a couple of things from... really

  259. the master's response to the servants. So one,

  260. the first kind of truth thing that stuck out

  261. to me is the requirement for the servants was

  262. not based off of their results. Now hear me out

  263. here, because you see like these guys make money,

  264. they're praised, this guy doesn't, and he's not

  265. praised. But look at the very first thing that

  266. the nobleman says in verse 13. He gave them 10

  267. minus and he said, engage in business until I

  268. come. Yeah. Uh, dude never gives a goal in mind.

  269. No. All he says is be active. Yeah. And I think

  270. that's why the first two people that are addressed

  271. in this text, um, like I think that's why they

  272. get a, Hey, nice job. Like you did something.

  273. You, you engaged with the call that I put on

  274. your life. Um, And the second piece here is like,

  275. dude, the equipment that they are given is not

  276. at all consistent with the reward for their faithfulness.

  277. Not at all. Because look at that. So I looked

  278. it up. A mina is like three months wage or whatever.

  279. And so not a small sum of money by any means.

  280. But I think that like... Just from my own budget

  281. and household finance experience, dealing with

  282. three months of my wages is in no way consistent

  283. with literally running tensities. No, exactly.

  284. No, not at all. But, I mean, the whole premise

  285. here of being faithful in little correlates to

  286. the Lord giving you much more to be faithful

  287. for, I think is something that we carry into

  288. our daily lives. The mundane, the day -to -day,

  289. the things that we do each day feel meaningless

  290. sometimes to me. But like one of the things that

  291. this text reminded me of is that it is in the

  292. very mundane day -to -day that God prepares us

  293. for the big. But I think we expect the big things,

  294. the rule over 10 cities or even five, without

  295. having engaged in the mundane. And that was a

  296. big application point that I drew out for myself

  297. of like, Ben, how are you doing with your day

  298. -to -day? Your day -to -day walk with Jesus in

  299. your quiet time, yes. But also just your day

  300. -to -day, like, are you involving the Lord in

  301. the other things? Like when you set down your

  302. Bible, when you close it and you start your day.

  303. on your drive in as you're here in the office,

  304. as you're talking with your friend on the phone,

  305. as you're bugging Sean in his office, like, like

  306. how am I shepherding the mundane things of my

  307. life? I really, I really like where you went

  308. with that. And when I look at this, you know,

  309. so many, so many times I think people, People

  310. want the ten cities, like you said. They want

  311. the big thing first. And that varies person to

  312. person what that thing is. And that's what I'm

  313. saying. It depends on your desires, your goals,

  314. and all that stuff. But a lot of times people

  315. can look at whatever that is and they think,

  316. like, this is what I deserve. The worldly example

  317. I think about, one of the things I remember being

  318. told is, like, you know, I've seen people. that

  319. whenever they move out, Maybe even when they

  320. get married, they think that they're automatically

  321. going to be able to go out and get the house

  322. that their parents have. Yeah. It's like, no,

  323. it took them 30 years to get to the point where

  324. they were able to get to this level of house.

  325. And so for some people in that context, they

  326. think that, oh, no, I'm going to get out of here.

  327. And it's like, no, no, no, there's work involved

  328. behind the scenes. And so really even there,

  329. I mean, there is some worldly application as

  330. well to this passage. But when I look at it,

  331. And I look at this, and I love how you pointed

  332. out at the very beginning, in verse 13, he told

  333. them to engage in business until I come back.

  334. Yes. That's the lens you have to interpret the

  335. rest of this passage from. Each of them has been

  336. given a different amount. Yeah. But like you

  337. said, there's not a goal specifically for each

  338. of them. It's just like, hey, this is what you've

  339. been given. You are responsible for what you've

  340. been given. Now go engage in business. Yeah.

  341. Right? So I think there is something where we

  342. have each been given different spiritual responsibilities.

  343. Yes. This goes way beyond money. Yes. No, absolutely.

  344. And here's where I think in our context we need

  345. to understand that because... This was on July

  346. 4th. We live in a country that we just celebrated

  347. our 250th anniversary, our 250th anniversary

  348. of some incredible freedoms that we've been given

  349. living in this country. And because we have those

  350. governmental freedoms, there are spiritual freedoms

  351. that we also have that other countries and other

  352. Christians don't have. So we have been given

  353. more. I believe that we have been given more.

  354. We have more access to not only the Bible, but

  355. theology. We've got freedom of speech. We've

  356. got the ability to go almost anywhere and share

  357. the gospel. We have been given 10 minus. I mean,

  358. just in this country, we have a big spiritual

  359. responsibility. And so now, knowing that, That

  360. I feel like we, just because of where our location

  361. is and the freedom we have, we have a very large

  362. spiritual responsibility. The question is now

  363. like, oh, okay. When we realize that, how much

  364. more do we think of, okay, what business of the

  365. Lord am I engaging in? Yeah. No, that is a great

  366. question. I mean, because look at the end of

  367. the passage. I tell you, everyone who has more

  368. will be given, but the one who has not even what

  369. he has will be taken away. Yeah. I'm not editing

  370. that out. Sean threw his bottle across the room

  371. and it clunked on the floor and he knows better.

  372. Like he knows better that I would have to edit

  373. that out. He made eye contact while he did it

  374. like a child. And so I'm going to keep that in.

  375. I hope he picked it up. That was good stuff.

  376. Wow, that threw off the conversation. Dang it.

  377. There's two truths here, though. Please get us

  378. back on track. One, like you and I have been

  379. heavily emphasizing, and I'm going to beat this

  380. drum until the day that I die, dude, because

  381. performance -based faith is the enemy. If you

  382. are judged by your success or failure, then that

  383. is not the gospel. If you are judged by how good

  384. you are or how you ought to be, that is anti

  385. -gospel. And you are trying to make up for in

  386. your own effort what Jesus has already died for.

  387. And God is not going to honor that. You may have

  388. earthly success, but at the end of the day, that

  389. will burn in the fire. Yes, it will. But here's

  390. the other piece. The king is coming. Yes, he

  391. is. Look at the beginning. This nobleman goes

  392. into the far country to receive a kingdom. Obviously,

  393. Jesus is using this as an analogy for himself

  394. and the people of Israel. Yes. They send a delegation

  395. after him saying, we don't want this man to rule

  396. over me, which is what they did a week later

  397. when they crucified him. But, dude, the seeds

  398. of that are in all of our hearts. Yeah. That

  399. is the thought process of... the wicked servant.

  400. Because I think we take what he says is true.

  401. The wicked servant is like, oh, you're a hard

  402. man and you take money you didn't deposit and

  403. you reap what you did not sow. No. It's all already

  404. the king's. And so his mindset is just warped.

  405. It's bent on his own good. It's bent on his own

  406. comfort. It's bent on his own ownership, except

  407. for he's... Nothing is his. Well, isn't this

  408. exactly the same principle that we're looking

  409. at in Galatians on Sunday morning right now?

  410. Yes. And that is anytime you begin to add anything

  411. to the gospel, anything you add to the gospel

  412. is going to distort the gospel, and it's no longer

  413. going to have the power it once did. Because

  414. if you add anything to the work of Christ, you

  415. are diluting the power of God. Well, a false

  416. gospel is no gospel at all, dude. No. Because

  417. if, I mean, Paul says it in Romans, like, if

  418. we could do this ourselves, then Christ died

  419. for nothing. Nothing, yeah. And so, but dude,

  420. for those of us... As we labor, it's so hard

  421. to be a Christian sometimes. Like the day -to

  422. -day mundane that we were talking about, that

  423. can get dry. That can get difficult. Being a

  424. Christian costs us. I think in different parts

  425. of the world where they don't have the same freedoms

  426. that they are, people die because they take the

  427. name of Jesus. But so for us, the notion that

  428. our works, that our salvation, our standing before

  429. God is not based off of our own efforts. or our

  430. own success, rather. It's based off of our faithfulness.

  431. But the second one, man, the king is coming back.

  432. And so while we labor, we know that Jesus himself

  433. is already on his way. Recognizing whether the

  434. rapture comes tomorrow or in 2 ,000 years, all

  435. of this that we're experiencing today, the good

  436. and the bad, are part of his plan to redeem his

  437. people and to restore his creation. Yeah, man,

  438. I love it. That's so good. There's one more thing

  439. I want to ask you about. What do you make of

  440. that verse 26? Anyone who has more will be given,

  441. but from the one who has not even more, or even

  442. what he has will be taken away. That's a weird

  443. phrase to end this with, particularly then going

  444. on to say slaughter the enemies of mine who did

  445. not want me to. I tell you that to everyone who

  446. has, more will be given. And from the one who

  447. does not have, that's the phrase that I'm stuck

  448. on right now. I mean, you don't have it. Even

  449. what he does have will be taken away. I'm trying

  450. to figure out what he's talking about. I'm very

  451. confused. I feel like it could refer to like

  452. genuine belief or genuine relationship with God.

  453. Because if you do, at the end of days, like I'm

  454. presuming Jesus is talking about his return,

  455. right? If you do have a walk with Christ, more

  456. will be given to you. We see the example in the

  457. text, like more responsibility, right? The very

  458. beginning of verse 26, I tell you that everyone

  459. who has, more will be given. Like that part.

  460. I think there's very good correlation to what's

  461. going on here, right? And just me reading from

  462. the cuff right now, and from the one who does

  463. not have, okay? So they don't have. This is even

  464. what he does have will be taken away. So are

  465. we talking about this? is this like someone's

  466. heart's going to be more hardened because they're

  467. not pursuing? Where are you at with this? I think

  468. that this is someone who does not have a relationship

  469. with God. It sounds like someone, and from the

  470. one who does not have, so does not have salvation,

  471. does not have Jesus, right? Even what he does

  472. have will be taken away. You know what I think

  473. he does have? His works. I think those are the

  474. good things that he did trying to justify himself

  475. before God. I think that those can be the things

  476. that they hold as important to things that they've

  477. strived for for their whole lives that ultimately

  478. didn't have spiritual value. So this could be

  479. like the guy who buried his coin because that

  480. was his work. Yes. He's like, hey, I'm going

  481. to protect what you've given me by doing not

  482. what you asked. I'm not going to engage in business,

  483. but I'm still doing something physical. but it's

  484. not what you wanted. It's interesting to think

  485. that you can go your whole life in an effort

  486. to protect something, but if it's not what you've

  487. actually been asked to do with it, then you can

  488. still be doing the wrong thing. And so I think

  489. that's where I'm struggling right now, and I'm

  490. trying to figure out, so from the one who does

  491. not have, I mean, the phrase right there lends

  492. itself to believe this is someone that's not

  493. a believer. Yes. Can you be a believer and still

  494. do Christian things? From the outside perspective,

  495. yes. Yes. Absolutely. Yeah, you can make it look

  496. like you have it all together. There's a lot

  497. of things you can do based on your mind. Yeah.

  498. You have the knowledge of what is the right thing

  499. to do. Or even just your desire to be justified.

  500. Yeah. And that's something like you have, like,

  501. I think that I've met some people that are extremely

  502. moral people. Yeah. Right? And there's no Christian

  503. foundation to it, but they try to do what is

  504. right. That is just built in them to do what

  505. is right. And so here, even what he does have

  506. will be taken away. Yeah. even though you've

  507. tried to dig your own hole for the Lord, that's

  508. not what he asked you to do. And so that's not

  509. going to benefit you in any way. So it's an interesting

  510. passage, man. It reminds me of 1 Corinthians

  511. 3, just kind of the idea that we're talking about

  512. here, where Paul kind of talks about each believer's

  513. works and ministries. It's 1 Corinthians 3, verse

    1 Corinthians 3:10

  514. 10. I looked it up while you were talking. And

  515. it says, according to the grace given to me,

  516. this is Paul talking, like a skilled master builder,

  517. I laid a foundation and somebody else is building

  518. upon it. He's kind of fleshing out the idea that

  519. like multiple different people can invest in

  520. one person spiritually. Let each take care how

  521. he builds upon it, that foundation. For no one

  522. can lay a foundation other than that which is

  523. laid, which is Jesus Christ. There's no other

  524. rock this thing can get built on. Now, if anyone

  525. builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious

  526. stones, wood, hay, straw, each one's work will

  527. become manifest for the day. In my text, the

  528. day, that D is capitalized. So he's referring

  529. to the day that Jesus comes back. We'll disclose

  530. it because it will be revealed by fire. And the

  531. fire will test what sort of work each one has

  532. done. If the work that anyone has built on the

  533. foundation survives, he will receive a reward.

  534. If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer

  535. loss, though he himself will be saved. But it

  536. is only through fire. And so I think here the

  537. conversation shifts maybe a little, and maybe

  538. it doesn't. Maybe there's a point where this

  539. could talk about somebody who knows Jesus and

  540. somebody who doesn't. But I also see here the

  541. person who has, right? There is some spiritual

  542. something. But what that is will be taken away

  543. in that if you're doing it by yourself without

  544. Jesus, then you're not getting fed the way that

  545. he intends you to. So going back to our text,

  546. the person that is being referred to there at

  547. the end, what do you think it takes for them?

  548. to recognize their works are not working, that

  549. they need the master. There are a couple of things

  550. that come to mind. I'm reading a book. I don't

  551. remember the name of the author. I'm not even

  552. going to give him credit here. There are a couple

  553. of things that come to mind. And I see this in

  554. our context here in Stanley County. I don't have

  555. anybody specific in mind. I'm not shooting shots,

  556. but I am thinking of a category of people that

  557. I come across frequently here who trust in their

  558. Christian cultural heritage in a way that they

  559. don't recognize they're not actually engaging

  560. with Jesus. They focus exclusively on the outward

  561. trappings of Christianity. Go to church, been

  562. baptized, tithe. Mama and daddy were Christians.

  563. Nana and Papa were Christians. This is just who

  564. we are. And the way that they treat people who

  565. may have come up in the church but who have not

  566. shown any fruit and who haven't been there since

  567. they were a child still focuses on the external.

  568. Man, they really need to turn their life around

  569. and get back in church. And it's like, dude,

  570. you're still focused on your works. And so I

  571. think asking those questions of like, what actually

  572. matters to me about the Christian life? Is it

  573. a set of traditions that I follow and the way

  574. that I feel about me and God is hinged on how

  575. often I've been to church or how regularly I

  576. tune in on pursuing Jesus? Or do I recognize

  577. that those external actions are a symptom of

  578. an internal reality? Because I think that, listen,

  579. this dude in our verses was a servant of the

  580. master. But you see from the way that he talks

  581. about the master's actions and from the rebellion

  582. at the beginning of the verse that his heart

  583. was not with the master. He was focusing on himself.

  584. And that is one of the, going back to just our

  585. culture, and I recognize, I've been here in Stanley

  586. County for nine years, and I think it's not just,

  587. I don't want to say it's symptomatic of, it's

  588. not symptomatic of just this county. But Bible

  589. Belt culture. Yeah. I mean, it really is. You

  590. know, people look, we look at the Bible Belt,

  591. and we are so culturally Christian that so many

  592. times that's where it stops. Yeah. It stops with

  593. your culture. You do things out of tradition,

  594. and I believe that a lot of people are hurting

  595. spiritually because of that. And perhaps have

  596. false assurance of their rightness with God.

  597. Oh, 100%. 100%. Even if you've prayed the sinner's

  598. prayer as an eight -year -old and got baptized

  599. as a nine -year -old, I have to wonder, going

  600. back to the parable of the sower, like, are you

  601. one of those people who got choked up by the

  602. weeds, the cares of this world, or the devil

  603. came and stole that word away? Because we see

  604. from the book of James that the evidence of a

  605. believer is the fruit. Yeah. Not the salvation

  606. of the believer. Salvation is by grace through

  607. faith alone. But because of what Christ does

  608. in you, because of the Holy Spirit in you, we

  609. see their fruit and their works. And this is

  610. why I ended my sermon this past Sunday the way

  611. I did, talking about my transformation. Yeah.

  612. And I mentioned on Sunday that I don't have a

  613. date, right? I don't have the date that... It

  614. was this big Holy Spirit movement. For me, it

  615. took time. It was over years. And sometime through

  616. those years, man, I realized Jesus was Lord.

  617. And how I know, because I remember at the beginning

  618. feeling like, oh, I'm not saved because I don't

  619. have a date, right? Yeah. But what I realized,

  620. but no, I started to look at how I was being

  621. transformed. My desires began to change, and

  622. my desires were not changing to prove my love

  623. for God. My desires were changing because I loved

  624. God. And that is where I think people get tripped

  625. up. So many people get stuck in cultural Christianity

  626. because they're doing things to prove their love

  627. for God instead of they're seeing a renewal of

  628. their mind, as Paul says. and their desires are

  629. changing because of the love they've experienced.

  630. And that's how you realize there's fruit. And

  631. I wonder if the, if it's, if, if a component

  632. of this too, is that they're also thinking they've

  633. done all they need to do to have to, to rather

  634. than I'm doing what I need to do to prove that

  635. I, that I love God or God's love for me. It's

  636. like, no, dude, I'm good. I'm set. I'm set. But

  637. like hearing you talk about your testimony, like

  638. every time you bring it up, it reminds me of

  639. Philippians. Like he who began to work in you

  640. will bring it complete to completion in the day

  641. of Jesus Christ. That's another one of those

  642. passages where the day, the capital D is capitalized,

  643. where Jesus comes back. It's like our spiritual

  644. walk is not a one -time event. And I think that's

  645. one of the things that we can treat our walk

  646. as. Like I got saved, bam, donezo. I've done

  647. what I need to do. And it's like, you've done

  648. all that you needed to do to be saved, provided

  649. that this leads to a lifelong relationship with

  650. Jesus. If it doesn't, then I don't know if that's

  651. a, I don't know if that was a genuine call to

  652. salvation because there's not fruit there. If

  653. the Holy Spirit isn't working in your life, like,

  654. you know. And it's one of the, and all I can

  655. speak of is from how the Holy Spirit has worked

  656. in my life. And what I know and what I've experienced

  657. is that the closer I get to Jesus, the more I

  658. absolutely fall in love with Jesus and the more

  659. I desire to represent him well in everything

  660. I do. And that process is like the least linear

  661. thing ever. It's like four steps forward, two

  662. steps back, three steps back, one step forward.

  663. I think that's the whole podcast in itself, like

  664. quite honestly. Once again, going back to the

  665. very beginning of... towards the beginning of

  666. this podcast, of my desire to not paint myself

  667. on a pedestal as a pastor. Facts. I want people

  668. to know I tell stories of my past. I tell stories

  669. now that I am still messing up. I am still, as

  670. the Apostle Paul says, I am still being saved.

  671. Yes. And that is the case for all of us. We're

  672. all going to mess up. We're all on this journey.

  673. But that's what I love about pursuing Jesus together,

  674. is that's what the Christian faith is all about.

  675. 100%. Sean and I aren't sitting here like, oh

  676. yeah, you're not saved and you're not saved and

  677. you're not saved. I'm not the Holy Spirit. But

  678. I would encourage anybody listening to this podcast,

  679. and I think I'll land the plane here, ask the

  680. Lord to examine your heart. Because I think he

  681. really will show you. Yes, he will. Do I have

  682. a living relationship with Jesus? Is it the fact

  683. that I'm a Christian that drives my behavior?

  684. Or does my daily walk with God inform what I

  685. do and how I think and feel and function? We

  686. can go a long way on willpower just to do stuff.

  687. it's hard for us to change who we are under the

  688. hood. And I think that's what that soul transformation

  689. looks like. That's a good final thought, buddy.

  690. Yeah. We all thank you for jumping in with us

  691. here on this Pursuing Jesus episode. One of these

  692. days, Sean, we're going to get to both texts.

  693. You know, if we do, we do. If we don't. I think

  694. we need feedback always. That's true. We're only

  695. doing what we feel that our conversations are

  696. just fluid and we do what we can. If you want

  697. to hear us talk about more text instead of laboring

  698. on number one, let us know. If you want to hear

  699. us talk about more tacos, I would love to talk

  700. more about tacos. Pursuing Tacos is going to

  701. go up on our Patreon in a couple of weeks. All

  702. right. Well, we love you guys. This has been

  703. Pursuing Jesus. I'm Ben Smith. I am Sean Green.

  704. And we will catch you later. Pursuing Jesus is
