  1. To you who are new or visiting today, thank you for spending your time with us.

  2. I recognize that it can be a scary thing to come to a new church.

  3. And you might feel like you have better things to do than come to a church on Sunday morning.

  4. There's mountains to go to, Labor Day weekend, all of these things.

  5. So we're really grateful that you're here.

  6. I'm grateful that you're here.

  7. I work for the college ministry that is the wing of this church,

  8. the Presbyterian Church in America.

  9. It's called Reformed University Fellowship.

  10. We are a ministry that works on your behalf as a ministry of the Presbyterian Church.

  11. And so in many ways, I am sent out by you through the giving,

  12. through the prayers to minister to college students.

  13. And so it is a real treat to come and always see you all, report to you all the work.

  14. The fall season is a really busy time for college ministry.

  15. It's the time where we're relaunching and meeting freshmen, meeting new students.

  16. And I thought I'd give a real quick report.

  17. The goal of RUF is to reach students for Christ and equip them to serve.

  18. So there's two parts in that.

  19. There's reaching, there's finding students and exposing them,

  20. welcoming them into the gospel of Jesus Christ, the saving news of his death and resurrection.

  21. And then there's discipling them, equipping them to walk with Jesus in the church

  22. for the rest of their lives or until Christ comes.

  23. And we've had a really great start.

  24. It's hard.

  25. Campus ministry is challenging these days, but it's also really, really fun.

  26. We have a student who this summer, she first, well, she first started coming to RUF last year

  27. and grew up nominally Catholic.

  28. And then a couple of, mid-June, she sits down with me over coffee and says,

  29. I don't think I've understood the Christian faith before, but I think I'm in.

  30. How do I do it?

  31. And so right then and there, I said, well, do you want to ask Jesus to be your Savior

  32. and your Lord and your King?

  33. And she said, yes, how?

  34. And so we sat down and we prayed.

  35. And she says, yes, I'm in.

  36. Jesus saved me.

  37. And then she said, how can I do more?

  38. And can I come and serve RUF more?

  39. And how do I come to church and all these things?

  40. And so right now I'm working with her this semester to sort of train her a little bit more,

  41. but then she's going to come on to our servant team.

  42. But already she's been meeting new students who've been coming in and welcoming them.

  43. On the other side of things, on Friday, this is wild, I had a conversation with a witch,

  44. a druid pagan, and that's what she calls herself.

  45. And I was very curious about her spirituality.

  46. And I said, I'd like to talk with you more about it.

  47. How can we set up a standing coffee?

  48. And she said, I'd love that.

  49. And so please pray for me.

  50. As I get to know, well, paganism is the fastest growing religion in the U.S. right now.

  51. And there's lots of students who would say that they are pagans.

  52. At the end of the day, it's very legalistic.

  53. There's a bunch of things that she has to do so that spiritual forces will be kind to her.

  54. So it's very much earn and deserve and prove.

  55. Obviously, there's a lot of spiritual forces at play in that.

  56. So please pray for me.

  57. On the other side of equipping, we've added 12 new students to our servant leadership team,

  58. including a student from this church who are, and they are killing it.

  59. They are meeting students, getting phone numbers, texting them, inviting them to our Labor Day picnic tomorrow,

  60. asking them to join small group Bible studies.

  61. I find myself either doing less ministry, which is a good thing,

  62. or being able to reach more broadly because the students are being equipped to do ministry.

  63. And so it's a fun time.

  64. It's a really exciting thing.

  65. If you're curious about my work, I'd love to get you on my email thread.

  66. If you're interested in helping me through prayer or through giving of resources financially or otherwise,

  67. please come talk to me.

  68. Turn in your Bibles now, if you would, to Psalm 23.

  69. Psalm 23, probably one of the most famous passages in all of literature, certainly in the Bible.

  70. Maybe only second to John 3.16, which we see on football signs through the end zone.

  71. Other than that, this might be the top.

  72. It's the passage that I first learned growing up in the church.

  73. The Lord is my shepherd.

  74. And there's good reason for that.

  75. This passage has been comfort to billions of Christians across thousands of years.

  76. It has strengthened so many people.

  77. And it seems like it's always appropriate,

  78. from deathbeds to morning devotionals to evening prayer to Sunday worship.

  79. It does it all.

  80. It does it all.

  81. And today, we're only going to look at half of one verse.

  82. Half of one verse and see how it cares for us today.

  83. We're just going to look at verse 3, part B.

  84. But before we do that, let me read us the first three verses and pray,

  85. and then we will dive in.

  86. So this is God's word, Psalm 23, verse 1.

    Psalms 23:1

  87. The Lord is my shepherd.

  88. I shall not want.

  89. He makes me lie down in green pastures.

  90. He leads me beside still waters.

  91. He restores my soul.

  92. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

  93. This is God's word.

  94. Would you pray with me?

  95. Father in heaven, we are grateful to come into your presence,

  96. to be around other Christians,

  97. to be in the presence of your Holy Spirit,

  98. to join with thousands of millions of Christians around time and this earth,

  99. to worship you.

  100. We know that our hearts are pulled to adore many other things,

  101. and so we need this course correction this day.

  102. We need your Holy Spirit to rightly comfort those who are afflicted

  103. and afflict those who are comforted.

  104. We need you to send your Spirit to show us Jesus.

  105. So we pray now that as we look at your words,

  106. as we prepare to take the sacrament of the Lord's Supper,

  107. that you would be with us,

  108. and it's in Jesus' name that we pray.

  109. Amen.

  110. I'm reading the Chronicles of Narnia with my seven-year-old daughter right now,

  111. and we just finished the second,

  112. well, I think it's the second book.

  113. There's debate about whether or not Prince Caspian,

  114. what order it's in.

  115. I think it's the second one.

  116. But we're reading the story of Prince Caspian.

  117. In book one, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,

  118. probably the most famous of the Narnia stories,

  119. four children, the Pevensie children,

  120. are pulled away magically into an alternative world, Narnia,

  121. and they have an incredible adventure.

  122. You're probably familiar with this story.

  123. And they grow up,

  124. and they become the great kings and queens of Narnia,

  125. and then at the end of their reign,

  126. they're pulled back to their homeland in England.

  127. And they spend a year reminiscing

  128. and sort of recovering to being children again

  129. and to their story.

  130. And a year has passed.

  131. But in that one year,

  132. hundreds of years pass in Narnia,

  133. and Narnia comes to need them again.

  134. And so you remember, if you've read the story,

  135. they're at a train station,

  136. and they hear a horn blow,

  137. and they think it's the train,

  138. but then they're whisked back to Narnia.

  139. And they find themselves in what they once,

  140. they thought, is this Narnia?

  141. It looks completely different.

  142. It's a completely different landscape.

  143. They no longer know their way around.

  144. A river has cut a new canyon

  145. where there was once a small creek bed.

  146. And they're trying to navigate their way through Narnia,

  147. and they know that they're called to rescue

  148. or assist King, well, Prince Caspian

  149. to becoming the king.

  150. And so they need to find Caspian.

  151. And they're trying to find their way to Caspian's camp.

  152. And they find themselves hopelessly lost,

  153. if you remember the story.

  154. And Peter and Edmund, the two brothers,

  155. think they can figure out their way,

  156. navigate their way,

  157. particularly through a very rough canyon.

  158. And so they try to go through the canyon on their own,

  159. and it leads them straight into King Miraz's camp,

  160. the bad king, who has taken over Narnia.

  161. And they have a very close encounter with death,

  162. and they retreat back up into the canyon.

  163. And they're at their wit's end.

  164. And if you remember the story,

  165. they're eating boiled apples again,

  166. and they're hungry, and they're tired,

  167. and they don't know what to do.

  168. And then Lucy, who's the most faithful of the children,

  169. falls asleep,

  170. and she starts awake in the middle of the night.

  171. And she sees Aslan, who is the guardian lion,

  172. the divine figure,

  173. telling her to follow him.

  174. And he leads them.

  175. She wakes up their siblings and says,

  176. I've seen Aslan, and they can't see him.

  177. They say, he's not there.

  178. And she says, trust me, would you follow me down?

  179. And they look, and they start to see,

  180. actually, there might be a hidden path

  181. through the canyon that they had not noticed.

  182. And they follow the path,

  183. and slowly as they go through,

  184. they see the path become more and more clear,

  185. and they begin to see Aslan more and more clearly.

  186. And at the end, they reach the place

  187. that they were trying to reach safely,

  188. the place they'd been trying to get to the whole time,

  189. and they realize that Aslan had been leading them

  190. the entire time.

  191. Even when they weren't aware of it,

  192. even when they hadn't seen him,

  193. even when they had strong trust or weak trust, doubts.

  194. And that part of the story is a picture

  195. of what our text tells us.

  196. In fact, I've often, I've thought,

  197. as I've thought through this passage,

  198. if C.S. Lewis had this in mind

  199. as he wrote that part of the story,

  200. that Psalm 23 tells us what that story was,

  201. which is this.

  202. God guides our lives,

  203. guides the lives of Christians for their good,

  204. and his glory all their lives.

  205. That is the simple truth

  206. that this passage shows us today.

  207. The one thing that I would ask you to try and remember

  208. as you walk away from church today

  209. and seek to follow Jesus this coming week

  210. is that God guides Christians

  211. for their good and his glory all their lives.

  212. And the way that I want us to consider this simple truth

  213. is to look at it in three ways.

  214. And the first thing I want to do

  215. is almost do a word-by-word study

  216. through this short phrase, sentence.

  217. Look at what each word means.

  218. And then second is to make some pastoral applications

  219. or reflections on it.

  220. And third, to see how it applies to our lives.

  221. So let's, shall we, if you would, come along with me.

  222. Let's dig in to this verse and see what it says.

  223. It says here, verse three, part B,

  224. he leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

  225. Now the first three verses of Psalm 23

  226. are a metaphor of God's care for Christian lives.

  227. And it uses the image of a shepherd caring for his sheep.

  228. And it's a shepherd who is walking his sheep

  229. on, in this last phrase, paths of righteousness.

  230. But let's look at the first word.

  231. It says, he leads me in paths of righteousness.

  232. Who is this he that is referring here?

  233. Well, it's very clear.

  234. You can go up to the very first sentence

  235. and it says, the Lord is my shepherd.

  236. But it's more than that.

  237. Notice here that in your translation,

  238. it has the word Lord in all capitalizations.

  239. That word is capitalized and it says,

  240. the Lord is my shepherd.

  241. And whenever we see that, we need to be cued off

  242. to a whole new, our minds need to telescope

  243. and expand to a whole rich story

  244. that the Christian faith teaches.

  245. And it's this, that that word Lord

  246. is God's personal name.

  247. It's his personal name.

  248. And it's the name that God reveals to Moses

  249. all the way back in Exodus 3.

  250. And it's God's personal name, Yahweh.

  251. I will be what I will be.

  252. And if you remember, in Exodus 3,

  253. God comes to Moses out of the blue,

  254. who is not exactly walking with the Lord,

  255. who had grown up a pagan in the middle of Egypt.

  256. And he says, I am the God of your fathers

  257. and I am going to rescue the children of your fathers.

  258. And Moses says, who are you?

  259. Who should I say is this God that's going to,

  260. and he says, I will tell you who I am.

  261. And it's very famous.

  262. You know it.

  263. He says, I am what I am, Yahweh.

  264. And that name, God's personal name,

  265. means something.

  266. Just like your name,

  267. if you've probably done a little bit of Googling,

  268. means it's something.

  269. Well, what does God's name mean?

  270. God's name means this.

  271. I will be what I will be,

  272. or I am what I am.

  273. Or I will be what I am,

  274. or I am what I will be.

  275. What it means is that God's name

  276. is consistency, continuity.

  277. Really what it means is that he is,

  278. at the very core of his being,

  279. a promise keeper.

  280. He will do what he says,

  281. and what he says he will do.

  282. God's name,

  283. baked into the very character of him,

  284. is stability,

  285. reliability,

  286. trustworthiness.

  287. Perhaps you're here today,

  288. and you're curious about the Christian faith.

  289. For whatever reason,

  290. maybe you've been here your whole life,

  291. and you're curious about the Christian faith.

  292. Maybe you stumbled in here,

  293. and you don't know why you're here.

  294. What do Christians believe?

  295. Let me tell you this.

  296. At the very core,

  297. the center of the Christian faith

  298. is the belief that a personal God

  299. reveals himself to human beings,

  300. and that he is consistent.

  301. He is a promise-keeping God,

  302. that his character is reliable.

  303. He is a personality who is able to be trusted,

  304. and it is this he who leads us.

  305. This is the next word.

  306. He leads me.

  307. What does this mean?

  308. That this character,

  309. this personality,

  310. this God,

  311. guides,

  312. directs,

  313. plans the trajectory of our lives.

  314. Now,

  315. this might feel a little obvious,

  316. but I want to pause and say,

  317. what are the counter stories

  318. that our world tells us about our lives?

  319. One of the stories that you can hear regularly

  320. is that our lives

  321. are just the products

  322. of cosmic blind evolutionary forces.

  323. You are the product

  324. of blind biological forces

  325. that somehow

  326. led you to be in this place.

  327. You are just the product

  328. of biology.

  329. It's blind,

  330. it's random,

  331. it's even chaotic.

  332. That's one story.

  333. Another story,

  334. which is frankly

  335. at the source of paganism,

  336. the resurgence of paganism

  337. that we see in our world today,

  338. the fastest growing religion,

  339. which says this,

  340. our lives are the pawns

  341. of greater spiritual forces.

  342. Gods,

  343. spirits,

  344. whatever,

  345. are using us as pawns,

  346. and we are just their playthings.

  347. Often when we think about

  348. the trajectory of our lives,

  349. we're faced with two different stories,

  350. and actually both of them

  351. appear in the movie The Odyssey.

  352. How many of y'all saw

  353. The Odyssey this summer?

  354. Great movie,

  355. really enjoyed it.

  356. Both of them are in this movie,

  357. so you know the story of The Odyssey,

  358. even if you didn't see it.

  359. The Odyssey is about

  360. a great hero of the Trojan War

  361. named Odysseus,

  362. and he's trying to get home,

  363. and he gets to Poseidon's son,

  364. who's a cyclops,

  365. and he gouges his eye out,

  366. and just as he gouges his eye out,

  367. Poseidon's son,

  368. the cyclops,

  369. and he calls down a curse

  370. from his father Poseidon

  371. and says,

  372. would you have struggles

  373. getting home?

  374. Would you not get home?

  375. Poseidon hears this

  376. and swears that he will buffet

  377. and afflict Odysseus

  378. all his way home.

  379. On the other side

  380. is Athena,

  381. who is Odysseus' patron goddess,

  382. and she says,

  383. I will help you get home.

  384. And so the rest of the story

  385. of The Odyssey,

  386. what makes the story so exciting,

  387. is that Odysseus

  388. and his men

  389. are essentially

  390. thrown about

  391. by two warring gods,

  392. Poseidon and Athena,

  393. and they're just getting

  394. tossed about.

  395. They are thrown around

  396. by spiritual forces

  397. greater than themselves.

  398. At the same time,

  399. there's another narrative

  400. in the movie,

  401. The Odyssey,

  402. that's this,

  403. that Odysseus

  404. is a strong man.

  405. He's a pivotal man,

  406. and at one point

  407. in the story,

  408. he says,

  409. and you remember,

  410. if you saw the movie,

  411. he growls,

  412. someone says,

  413. it's fated by the gods,

  414. and what does he growl?

  415. He says,

  416. then I defy the gods.

  417. Right?

  418. And in fact,

  419. that line,

  420. defy the gods,

  421. that was the banner line

  422. for the whole movie.

  423. It was defy the gods.

  424. It was the tagline

  425. of the promotional trailers.

  426. And so this is

  427. the conflicting stories

  428. that we hear

  429. in our world today.

  430. One,

  431. on one side,

  432. is that our lives

  433. are our own to lead.

  434. Defy the gods.

  435. Whatever forces

  436. are out there,

  437. whatever's trying

  438. to tell you

  439. to do or be

  440. or act in some way,

  441. defy it.

  442. Be your own person.

  443. Challenge the status quo.

  444. We set the trajectory

  445. of our lives,

  446. large and small.

  447. Here's what it is.

  448. We decide where we live.

  449. We get to decide

  450. where we work.

  451. We get to decide

  452. what our hobbies are.

  453. We get to decide

  454. who our friends

  455. or our spouses are.

  456. And even if there is

  457. some greater force,

  458. spiritual or otherwise,

  459. that seeks to manipulate

  460. or control,

  461. we rebel,

  462. defy the gods.

  463. But on the other side,

  464. we have another story

  465. that we often hear

  466. and are told,

  467. which is this,

  468. that we are pawns

  469. tossed about

  470. by impersonal forces

  471. or personal forces

  472. greater than ourselves.

  473. Fate is inevitable,

  474. unavoidable.

  475. You're poor

  476. because you were born poor.

  477. You're kept down

  478. because of your race.

  479. In the Odyssey,

  480. the whole crew

  481. of Odysseus

  482. is fated to die

  483. and as try as he can,

  484. try as hard as he can,

  485. Odysseus can't stop

  486. his men from dying.

  487. Sometimes this story

  488. takes the form

  489. of social science,

  490. our class,

  491. our family,

  492. our upbringing.

  493. Either way,

  494. the stories we tell

  495. say that either

  496. I'm on my own

  497. or there's nothing

  498. I can do.

  499. Do you see that?

  500. Now,

  501. contrast that,

  502. dear friends,

  503. with what

  504. Psalm 29

  505. says,

  506. the Lord

  507. is my shepherd.

  508. He guides me

  509. on paths

  510. of righteousness.

  511. We are neither

  512. the captains

  513. of our own destiny

  514. nor

  515. mere manipulated

  516. pawns

  517. of impersonal forces.

  518. Here,

  519. a consistent

  520. promise-keeping

  521. God

  522. who's in control

  523. of everything.

  524. This is what we said

  525. in our confession

  526. of faith,

  527. providentially working

  528. all things out

  529. for our good,

  530. leads us.

  531. A divine shepherd

  532. cares for us,

  533. directs our lives.

  534. your life is neither

  535. up to you

  536. to control

  537. on your own

  538. nor

  539. are you a victim

  540. of fate.

  541. A heavenly shepherd

  542. who has affection

  543. and even love

  544. leads you.

  545. but how does he lead us?

  546. How does he lead us?

  547. Well,

  548. the next phrase,

  549. he leads me

  550. in paths

  551. of righteousness.

  552. In paths

  553. of righteousness.

  554. When God,

  555. our shepherd,

  556. leads us

  557. in righteousness,

  558. he takes us,

  559. and this is what

  560. it means,

  561. he takes us

  562. in life directions

  563. that will shape us

  564. to be more like him.

  565. Paths of righteousness

  566. are directions,

  567. events,

  568. parts of our lives

  569. that will shape us

  570. to be more like him.

  571. And all of this

  572. is captured

  573. in the word righteousness.

  574. It's a very,

  575. it's a very Christian word,

  576. right?

  577. We hear this word

  578. tossed around a lot.

  579. What does it mean?

  580. In this context,

  581. it does not necessarily

  582. mean what Paul,

  583. how Paul uses the word

  584. when he talks about

  585. Christ's perfection

  586. given or imputed

  587. to us by faith.

  588. That's a beautiful truth

  589. in the Christian faith

  590. and I would love

  591. to talk with you about it

  592. if you're curious about it,

  593. but that's not

  594. what is,

  595. what's being referred to here.

  596. In Psalm 23,

  597. the paths that lead us,

  598. that God leads us on,

  599. the righteous paths

  600. are marked by

  601. two characteristics,

  602. two things.

  603. First, holiness.

  604. Second, purity.

  605. Paths of righteousness

  606. are marked by holiness

  607. and purity.

  608. First thing is they write

  609. that righteous paths

  610. are holy,

  611. another common Christian word.

  612. What is a holy path?

  613. Well, when something is holy,

  614. we mean that is separate,

  615. it's distinct,

  616. it's set apart

  617. from the rest.

  618. It has its special purpose.

  619. Think of it this way.

  620. In my house,

  621. we have a lot of brushes.

  622. Yesterday was cleaning day

  623. in my house

  624. and so I was scrubbing

  625. my whole house.

  626. I scrubbed the floors,

  627. I scrubbed the stairs,

  628. I vacuumed the carpet

  629. with this special brush,

  630. I scrubbed the toilets.

  631. because there's lots of brushes

  632. for cleaning in my house.

  633. But there's one brush

  634. that has a very special purpose.

  635. My toothbrush.

  636. And my toothbrush is set apart

  637. for a very special task.

  638. And as soon as my toothbrush

  639. scrubs anything other

  640. than my teeth,

  641. it is no longer my toothbrush.

  642. It then suddenly has

  643. a whole new task.

  644. It is a holy brush.

  645. It is set apart

  646. for a very special task.

  647. God sets us apart

  648. in a holy way

  649. for a special path.

  650. The second characteristic

  651. of righteousness

  652. and it's connected

  653. is purity.

  654. Righteous paths are purity

  655. and these mean

  656. that they are marked

  657. by a special cleanliness

  658. that aligns with God's character

  659. and with his law.

  660. When something is holy,

  661. it's clean.

  662. It's not spoiled.

  663. It's pure.

  664. It's the difference

  665. between a clear mountain creek

  666. that you can dip a cup into

  667. and drink

  668. and a river

  669. that's full of industrial

  670. toxic dump sludge.

  671. It's a clean,

  672. there's a cleanliness

  673. to holiness.

  674. And it's a cleanliness

  675. that is not something

  676. that we get to decide,

  677. but it's something

  678. that is aligned with God,

  679. with who he is,

  680. the very center

  681. of holy purity.

  682. So when God takes us

  683. on paths of righteousness,

  684. it means that the paths

  685. that he takes us on

  686. may not be easy,

  687. may not always be fun,

  688. but they will be marked

  689. by purity and holiness.

  690. And that makes them righteous.

  691. David Calhoun is an old,

  692. was, he's now with the Lord,

  693. an old seminary professor

  694. who writes what I think

  695. is the best meditation

  696. on Psalm 23.

  697. I haven't read them all.

  698. There's thousands.

  699. But the best one I've read,

  700. it's called A Sheep Remembers.

  701. I highly recommend the book.

  702. David Calhoun is an old professor.

  703. He taught at Covenant Seminary

  704. where Matthew and I

  705. went to seminary.

  706. He's dying of cancer

  707. as he writes

  708. A Sheep Remembers.

  709. He's 84 years old

  710. and he's meditating

  711. on this line,

  712. he leads me on paths

  713. of righteousness.

  714. Listen to what he says.

  715. He says this,

  716. I went to Bible college

  717. at Columbia Bible College

  718. where there was only

  719. one major, Bible.

  720. Sometimes I wish

  721. that I had gone

  722. to the University

  723. of South Carolina

  724. and studied English.

  725. After Bible college,

  726. I went to Covenant Seminary

  727. and I learned

  728. all about the Bible

  729. from Genesis to Revelation.

  730. And I learned

  731. that all the Bible

  732. is about one thing,

  733. Jesus.

  734. After seminary,

  735. I went to Labrie

  736. in Switzerland

  737. and I talked about the Bible

  738. with many wounded souls.

  739. Bible college taught me Bible.

  740. Covenant Seminary

  741. deepened my understanding

  742. of the Bible.

  743. Labrie widened my view

  744. of God's world.

  745. Then I taught Bible

  746. at Jamaica Bible College

  747. where I learned

  748. to follow Jesus

  749. with Jamaican Christians

  750. who were utterly unlike me.

  751. Then I went to Princeton Seminary

  752. and got a PhD in history.

  753. Then I taught theology

  754. at Galilee Baptist Church,

  755. a black church

  756. in inner city St. Louis.

  757. And now I find myself

  758. in my last years

  759. in Chicago.

  760. And my wife and I

  761. ask ourselves,

  762. what would you have done differently?

  763. What choices

  764. other than what we did

  765. would we have made?

  766. Pay attention to what he says.

  767. Listen to what David Calhoun says.

  768. Looking back over our lives,

  769. we see that the Lord

  770. has led us

  771. in the right paths.

  772. And though at times

  773. one or both of us

  774. hesitated to turn aside,

  775. he always brought us

  776. to the paths

  777. of righteousness.

  778. They were not the paths

  779. we would have chosen,

  780. but they were the right paths

  781. for us.

  782. What is he saying?

  783. This man looks back

  784. over his whole life,

  785. a full life,

  786. traveling the world,

  787. full of education,

  788. full of places

  789. where he could have done

  790. something different.

  791. Studied English

  792. instead of theology,

  793. taught,

  794. not gotten a PhD,

  795. taught it in a different place,

  796. and he says,

  797. through it all,

  798. like Aslan,

  799. leading the Pevensey children,

  800. he discerns

  801. someone

  802. was leading him

  803. on paths

  804. that made him

  805. more like Jesus,

  806. on paths

  807. that made him

  808. know Jesus more.

  809. This was the right path

  810. that God took us on.

  811. Here's the point.

  812. Here's the point, friends.

  813. When you follow God,

  814. when you follow

  815. the God of the Bible,

  816. he will lead you,

  817. not always on easy paths,

  818. but paths

  819. that are like him,

  820. paths that are righteous,

  821. holy, and pure,

  822. and they will make us

  823. like him,

  824. holy and pure.

  825. Paths of righteousness

  826. are life directions

  827. that will make you

  828. trust God more,

  829. make you see God more,

  830. make you more like him,

  831. more like Jesus.

  832. Now, to what end?

  833. Why does he do this for us?

  834. Well, it tells us,

  835. he leads me in paths

  836. of righteousness

  837. for his name's sake.

  838. For his name's sake.

  839. Why does God do this?

  840. Why does he shepherd us

  841. on green pastures

  842. or quiet streams

  843. or paths of righteousness?

  844. Well, it's not for our good.

  845. It's not for our pleasure.

  846. It's not so that we have

  847. nice experiences in life.

  848. It's for his name's sake.

  849. Namely, so that his name,

  850. a name of consistency,

  851. a name of trustworthiness,

  852. a name of I will be

  853. what I will be,

  854. is made what the Christian,

  855. what the old Christians

  856. have called glorified,

  857. what I call the college students

  858. big and beautiful.

  859. It's so that God is made

  860. big and beautiful in our lives.

  861. God shepherds us

  862. so that God is the main character

  863. in our lives.

  864. Everything that God does

  865. in this world,

  866. everything that God does

  867. in this world

  868. is so that he will receive

  869. more attention,

  870. more adoration,

  871. more affection.

  872. Isaiah 48 says,

  873. God says,

  874. I don't act for my people's sake.

  875. Here's Israel

  876. who has wandered far astray

  877. in the book of Isaiah

  878. and they deserve to be wiped out

  879. and yet God says,

  880. I will save a remnant

  881. but not for their sake.

  882. But for his fame,

  883. for his character

  884. to be shown into the universe.

  885. And there's a challenge

  886. built into this,

  887. one that frankly

  888. chastens my heart.

  889. And it's this,

  890. that our lives

  891. are not about us.

  892. Our lives,

  893. this church,

  894. your family,

  895. your marriage

  896. is not fundamentally,

  897. your work,

  898. your hobbies

  899. are not about us.

  900. They are about his fame,

  901. about God being glorified,

  902. about his fatherly care

  903. and his tender compassion

  904. being displayed.

  905. If there's anything

  906. that's about us,

  907. it's so that we are made

  908. more like him.

  909. And this is hard

  910. because as a college minister,

  911. I want to grow

  912. a campus ministry

  913. that might get written

  914. about someday

  915. in 50 years.

  916. you as a parent

  917. might want to have

  918. a child

  919. who appears

  920. on dean's lists

  921. in school one day.

  922. You as a married person

  923. might want to have

  924. the younger couples

  925. come and consult you

  926. on marriage one day.

  927. You as a worker

  928. might want to be

  929. nominated

  930. for employee of the month

  931. or for the big bonus.

  932. And those things

  933. are all well

  934. and good

  935. and true

  936. and beautiful

  937. but those are not

  938. why God

  939. leads us

  940. on paths

  941. of righteousness.

  942. It's for his reputation

  943. and his honor.

  944. Where are the places

  945. in your heart

  946. where you are

  947. in this Christian thing

  948. for the perks?

  949. For the things

  950. that you think

  951. would get out of it?

  952. Where are the places

  953. where you can

  954. maybe need to

  955. repent and say,

  956. Lord,

  957. I've done this

  958. for my sake.

  959. Okay,

  960. let's summarize.

  961. What does this verse mean?

  962. This verse means,

  963. this half a line

  964. means that a personal

  965. God of the universe

  966. directs our lives

  967. personally

  968. and powerly

  969. in directions

  970. that are good for us

  971. to make us more like him

  972. and to bring him glory.

  973. Now,

  974. let me give us

  975. some pastoral reflections

  976. on this.

  977. First,

  978. and I've hinted

  979. at this already,

  980. a personal God

  981. leads our lives

  982. not impersonal forces.

  983. Think about karma.

  984. It's a very popular

  985. idea today.

  986. I promise you

  987. that your neighbors,

  988. if not you,

  989. have some

  990. either implicit

  991. or explicit

  992. sense of karma.

  993. Karma says

  994. that something,

  995. a personal force

  996. or an impersonal force,

  997. balances all things out

  998. and that what comes around

  999. goes around.

  1000. That's not here.

  1001. That's not what

  1002. this is saying.

  1003. A personal God

  1004. has a plan

  1005. for our lives

  1006. and he is disposed

  1007. towards his people

  1008. as a shepherd.

  1009. Stu on this

  1010. for a minute.

  1011. Imagine if we viewed

  1012. hiking the way

  1013. karma would say.

  1014. If we viewed hiking

  1015. that way,

  1016. we would just say,

  1017. I'm going to walk

  1018. that way

  1019. and hope I reach

  1020. a mountaintop.

  1021. No,

  1022. that's not how

  1023. we live our lives.

  1024. We study a map.

  1025. We gather information

  1026. from people

1027. who have gone before us.

  1028. We pick a place

  1029. that says

  1030. this is going

  1031. to be beautiful.

  1032. We do not just

  1033. start walking.

  1034. No,

  1035. a guide

  1036. who wants

  1037. to lead you,

  1038. shepherd you,

  1039. care for you,

  1040. take you to see

  1041. the best sites

  1042. that this state

  1043. has to offer

  1044. on the best routes.

  1045. That is what

  1046. our shepherd does.

  1047. You are not

  1048. tossed around,

  1049. your friends

  1050. are not tossed around

  1051. by blind forces,

1052. but by a shepherding God.

  1053. Second application

  1054. is this.

  1055. The Christian life

  1056. is not a

  1057. choose your own adventure.

  1058. The Christian life

  1059. is not choose

  1060. your own adventure.

1061. One of the greatest lies

  1062. that we believe

  1063. is that we get

  1064. to follow God

  1065. the way we want.

  1066. This is what

  1067. the Pevensey children

  1068. wanted.

  1069. They wanted to go

  1070. down the canyon

  1071. on their own terms

1072. and it went very poorly

  1073. for them.

  1074. And all of us

  1075. have places

1076. and ways in our lives

  1077. where we want

1078. to do what we want

  1079. to do.

  1080. Perhaps it's with

  1081. our money.

  1082. We get to set

1083. how we use our finances.

  1084. Perhaps it's with

  1085. our career.

  1086. I will force myself

1087. to work in this job.

  1088. Perhaps it's in our

  1089. romantic relationships

  1090. or in our habits.

  1091. We will assume

  1092. what Odysseus says

  1093. when he says

  1094. defy the gods.

  1095. I'll do what I want.

  1096. Being a sheep

  1097. is not being scattered

1098. in any way we want

1099. but we follow a shepherd

  1100. who directs us

  1101. through his word.

  1102. The paths of righteousness

  1103. are not

  1104. choose your own adventure.

  1105. You do not

  1106. frankly get to follow

  1107. God any way

  1108. that you want

1109. but as he has revealed

1110. to us in his word.

  1111. And if you find

  1112. yourself living

1113. some way in your life

  1114. that is contrary

  1115. to this

1116. then with all the love

  1117. in the world

  1118. that is not

  1119. the path of righteousness.

  1120. Third,

  1121. the paths

  1122. of righteousness

  1123. are not always easy.

  1124. The next line

  1125. even though I what

  1126. walk through the valley

1127. of the shadow of death

  1128. the paths of righteousness

  1129. are not easy.

  1130. It's not always lucrative.

1131. Late in the book of Acts

  1132. Paul very clearly tells

1133. I mean God very clearly

  1134. tells Paul

  1135. go back to Jerusalem.

  1136. Go back to Jerusalem

  1137. and preach the gospel.

  1138. And Paul says

  1139. okay I'll go.

  1140. And immediately

  1141. all of his friends

  1142. start saying

1143. all of the apostles say

1144. you know what's going to happen

1145. if you go back there.

1146. They're going to arrest you.

  1147. And then another prophet

  1148. comes and binds

  1149. Paul's wrists

  1150. and says

1151. the man who owns this belt

  1152. will be arrested

  1153. in Jerusalem.

  1154. and they say

1155. please Paul don't do this.

  1156. You're our best player.

  1157. You've planted

  1158. dozens of churches

  1159. all around the Mediterranean.

  1160. Please don't.

  1161. And he says

  1162. I have to go.

1163. And so what does he do?

  1164. He goes

  1165. and immediately

  1166. is arrested.

  1167. Immediately gets

1168. the snot beat out of him

  1169. three to four times.

  1170. Gets shipped

1171. all the way to Rome

  1172. in a very unpleasant

  1173. series of crashes

  1174. and shipwrecks

1175. and getting bit by a snake.

  1176. And then he's killed.

  1177. That's God's path

  1178. of righteousness

  1179. for Paul.

1180. We would look at that

  1181. and say

  1182. not the win

1183. not what we would have

  1184. had in mind.

  1185. Following a shepherd

  1186. at work

  1187. can be costly.

  1188. It will cost you

  1189. as Jesus says

  1190. everything.

  1191. Take up your cross

  1192. and follow me.

  1193. And this means

  1194. the death

  1195. of something

  1196. in your life.

  1197. Probably multiple things.

  1198. For some of you

1199. it's your view of money.

  1200. For some of you

  1201. it's your view

  1202. of relationships

1203. or what you can do

  1204. with your body

  1205. or your sexuality.

1206. Something will have to die

1207. on the path of righteousness

1208. and that will be unpleasant.

  1209. It will hurt.

  1210. But we trust

1211. that it is a good

  1212. shepherdly

  1213. righteous path.

  1214. Third application

  1215. righteous paths

  1216. are God's direction

  1217. and our cooperation.

  1218. Righteous paths

  1219. are God's direction

  1220. and our cooperation.

  1221. The New Testament

1222. picks up on this theme

  1223. of paths of righteousness

  1224. with the word walk.

  1225. Walk.

  1226. And Paul uses this

  1227. all the time

  1228. in his epistles

  1229. in his letters

  1230. when he says

  1231. walk in a manner

  1232. worthy of your calling.

  1233. Walk by the spirit

  1234. and you will not

  1235. gratify the desires

  1236. of the flesh.

  1237. Or 1 John

  1238. where he tells

  1239. little children

  1240. walk in the light.

  1241. We have to trust

1242. that God will direct us

  1243. but then we also

  1244. have to make choices

  1245. wisely

  1246. under the counsel

  1247. of God's word

  1248. and of his church

1249. in a way that cooperates

  1250. obeys

  1251. our good shepherd.

  1252. God directs

  1253. and yet we obey.

  1254. Very practically

  1255. what does this mean?

  1256. What does this mean?

  1257. It means that you

  1258. must be a person

  1259. who is putting yourself

  1260. in places

  1261. where you will receive

  1262. the counsel

  1263. and the care

  1264. of the shepherd.

  1265. Put yourself

  1266. in places

  1267. where you will be

  1268. shepherded.

  1269. Namely

  1270. this place.

  1271. Come back

  1272. next week.

  1273. find yourself

  1274. friends

  1275. who have been

  1276. walking with Jesus

  1277. for a long time

  1278. and ask them

  1279. would you help me?

  1280. Join the men's group.

  1281. Join the women's group.

  1282. Join a home group.

  1283. Find places

  1284. where you can

  1285. and will be shepherded.

  1286. Ask yourself

1287. which of the two stories

  1288. are you tempted

  1289. to believe

  1290. that either

  1291. defy the gods

  1292. I'm the master

  1293. of my own fate

  1294. I can do whatever

  1295. I want

  1296. or it is fated.

  1297. Which of those two

  1298. do you

  1299. incline to be?

  1300. For me

1301. it depends on the day.

  1302. Some days

  1303. I'm like

  1304. I'm going to do

  1305. whatever I want

  1306. with my life.

  1307. I'm going to be

  1308. what's really bad

  1309. about me

  1310. is I'll baptize

  1311. it with ministry.

  1312. I'll say

  1313. I'm going to be

1314. this kind of a pastor.

  1315. There's other days

  1316. where I'll say

  1317. there's nothing

  1318. I can do.

  1319. It's too big.

  1320. It's too big

  1321. of a

  1322. I can't

  1323. I can't do anything.

  1324. Which one

  1325. are you tempted

  1326. to believe?

  1327. And I would invite

  1328. you

  1329. to repent.

  1330. I would invite

  1331. you

  1332. to see

  1333. that there's

  1334. a better story

  1335. that Psalm 23

    Psalms 23:3

  1336. verse 3 says.

  1337. And I would invite

  1338. you to

  1339. imitate

  1340. Psalm 1.

  1341. Blessed

  1342. is the man

  1343. who does not

  1344. walk

  1345. in the counsel

  1346. of the wicked

  1347. or stand

  1348. in the way

  1349. of sinners

  1350. or sit

  1351. in the seat

  1352. of scoffers

  1353. but his delight

  1354. is in the law

  1355. of what?

  1356. Yahweh.

  1357. A personal God.

  1358. God leads us

  1359. but we follow.

  1360. And so how do

  1361. we do this?

  1362. I've already

  1363. hinted at it

  1364. but we listen

  1365. to the shepherd

  1366. and we stay

  1367. in the flock.

  1368. Very practically

  1369. we listen

  1370. to the shepherd

  1371. and we stay

  1372. in the flock.

  1373. Our New Testament

  1374. reading was

  1375. from John 10

  1376. where Jesus

  1377. comes and says

  1378. what does he say?

  1379. I am

  1380. the good shepherd.

  1381. And immediately

  1382. he is relating

  1383. his attribute

  1384. goodness to

  1385. the character

  1386. of God

  1387. keeping promises

  1388. steadfast

  1389. trustworthy

  1390. I am

  1391. the good shepherd.

  1392. I know

  1393. my sheep

  1394. and my sheep

  1395. know me

  1396. and they will

  1397. listen to

  1398. my voice.

  1399. The application

  1400. for this

  1401. is to listen

  1402. to the good shepherd.

  1403. Put yourself

  1404. in places

  1405. where you can

  1406. be led

  1407. in paths

  1408. of righteousness.

  1409. Stay in the word.

  1410. This is an invitation

  1411. not to have

  1412. to read your Bible

  1413. but to get

  1414. to read your Bible.

  1415. An invitation

  1416. not to have

  1417. to come to church

  1418. but to get

  1419. to come to church.

  1420. Not to have

  1421. to fill your schedule

  1422. with one more

  1423. small group

  1424. that you have

  1425. to do

  1426. one more errand

  1427. that you have

  1428. to take your kids

  1429. to

  1430. but to get

  1431. to do it

  1432. because we have

  1433. a fatherly shepherd

  1434. who is guiding us.

  1435. And then the second

  1436. application is

1437. to stay in the flock.

1438. To stay in the flock.

  1439. The temptation

  1440. always

  1441. is to

  1442. well John tells us

  1443. scatter.

  1444. Scatter.

  1445. John 10

  1446. the wolf

  1447. and the thief

  1448. come to scatter

  1449. the sheep.

  1450. The world

  1451. the flesh

  1452. and the devil

  1453. want to isolate

  1454. you from the visible

  1455. body of believers

  1456. in any

  1457. and every

  1458. distraction.

  1459. Colorado Springs

  1460. is particularly

  1461. prone to this.

  1462. I'm learning this

  1463. from my wife.

  1464. She grew up

  1465. in a place

  1466. where she says

  1467. people don't scatter

  1468. in other places

  1469. like they do here.

  1470. We scatter

  1471. with mountains.

  1472. We scatter

  1473. with

  1474. sports activities.

  1475. We scatter

  1476. with

  1477. all of our hobbies.

1478. And I would invite you

  1479. I would encourage you

  1480. to don't buy it.

  1481. Stay

  1482. in the flock

  1483. when you move

  1484. and I know

  1485. this church

1486. has a lot of people

  1487. who move.

  1488. Matthew always tells me

  1489. it's a church

  1490. that receives

  1491. and sends.

  1492. Find a new church.

1493. Make it a top priority.

  1494. If you're not

1495. a member of this church

  1496. consider joining it.

  1497. Matthew just says

  1498. it's not too late

  1499. to join the new

  1500. members class.

  1501. Talk to him

  1502. about it.

  1503. Lastly

  1504. as you go out

  1505. this week

  1506. as you go out

  1507. tomorrow

  1508. take great assurance

  1509. that this is so

  1510. beautiful but so

  1511. simple.

  1512. Everything's going to

  1513. turn out all right.

  1514. Everything's going to

  1515. turn out all right.

  1516. Tim Keller always

  1517. said famously

  1518. if the Christian

  1519. faith is true

  1520. three things are

  1521. certain.

  1522. A.

  1523. The bad things

  1524. in your life

  1525. cannot last.

  1526. B.

  1527. The good things

  1528. cannot be taken away.

  1529. And see the best

  1530. is yet to come.

  1531. The bad things

  1532. cannot last.

  1533. The good things

  1534. can't be taken away

  1535. and the best

  1536. is yet to come.

  1537. Why?

  1538. Because the Lord

  1539. is your shepherd.

  1540. Take comfort in that.

  1541. Listen to the shepherd

1542. and stay in the flock.

1543. And he will lead you

  1544. as the very end

  1545. of Psalm 23 says

  1546. he will lead you

  1547. to the house

  1548. of the Lord

  1549. forever.

1550. Let me pray for us.

  1551. Lord we pray

  1552. that you would

  1553. indeed shepherd us.

  1554. You've promised

  1555. that you will.

  1556. You've sent your son

  1557. to show us

  1558. your great love

1559. for us on the cross.

  1560. You've committed

  1561. that you will not

  1562. one will fall away.

1563. Help us to trust that.

  1564. Help us to repent

  1565. of the places

  1566. where we want to

  1567. set our own path

  1568. where we either

  1569. defy the gods

  1570. or despair.

  1571. Help us to be

1572. help this to be a church

  1573. that is marked

  1574. by obedience

  1575. and listening to

  1576. the shepherd

  1577. in all of it.

  1578. And we will give

  1579. you the glory

  1580. because it is all

  1581. for your name's sake.

  1582. It's in Jesus' name

  1583. we pray.

  1584. Amen.

  1585. Amen.
