  1. Well, would you please take your Bibles and open them up this morning again to the book of Colossians.

  2. Our passage this morning is chapter 1 verses 9 through 14.

    Isaiah 1:9–14

  3. If you don't have a Bible, that's okay.

  4. We provide them in the seat backs in front of you, but I would encourage you as always, please have a Bible open as we walk through this passage together.

  5. We're picking up in verse 9, and we left off last week with Paul telling the Colossian church how he prays for them, how he thanks God for them, and how he thanks God for the work of his grace at work in them.

  6. He had heard about this from his friend Epaphras, who came to Paul while he was there in Rome and updated him on the church at Colossae.

  7. And so we pick up here halfway through Paul's train of thought in verse 9 this morning, and again, we'll read through verse 14.

  8. And when you found that in your Bible, let's stand in honor of the reading of the Word of God this morning.

  9. Colossians 1 verses 9 through 14.

    Colossians 1:9–14

  10. Paul says,

  11. Let's pray once more.

  12. Father, we ask once more, God, would you speak powerfully through the preaching of your Word.

  13. Let it fall on fertile soil this morning.

  14. And draw our hearts' attention to Christ.

  15. Would you give us wisdom and knowledge and insight, God, empowered by your Spirit, so that we might walk in a manner worthy of the Lord.

  16. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  17. Amen.

  18. You may be seated.

  19. How can I pray for you?

  20. As a pastor, that's a question that I find myself asking fairly often.

  21. And oftentimes, the response that I will get to that question tends to be focused on circumstances of life.

  22. So maybe someone is dealing with a sickness.

  23. Maybe someone that they love is struggling in some way.

  24. Maybe they're having some sort of difficulty at work or at home.

  25. It's about their life circumstances.

  26. And of course, I love to offer up prayers like that to the Lord.

  27. And the Lord loves to hear prayers like that and loves to answer prayers like that.

  28. But it's a little bit surprising sometimes when we open up passages like this.

  29. And we see that the way the Apostle Paul tends to pray is very different from the way that you and I tend to pray.

  30. And it's not that needs like that don't matter.

  31. Of course they do.

  32. But to the Apostle Paul, it seems like they don't matter most.

  33. Paul's prayers for the saints here in Colossae and other places in Scripture are shaped by their greatest and most urgent need.

  34. Namely, that they would know the breathtaking power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  35. And then that they would go living in the power of the new life that Christ has purchased for them in the gospel.

  36. You remember how last week we started our series through the book of Colossians.

  37. And we saw that these believers in Colossae are wrestling against a dangerous and a false teaching there in Colossae.

  38. This teaching told them that they did not have enough.

  39. The gospel is a great start.

  40. And Jesus is a great place to begin.

  41. But what you really need is more of our man-made rules and man-made regulations.

  42. You need more of our secret, special knowledge.

  43. You need more of what we have to offer you.

  44. And then, maybe then, you will be spiritually full.

  45. Maybe then you will have the knowledge that you need of how to live a life that's honoring to God.

  46. But you remember from last week, Paul, right off the bat, told them,

  47. No, no, no, no, no.

  48. The gospel of Jesus Christ is enough.

  49. Jesus and his finished work on the cross is enough.

  50. You don't need to add to it all of these man-made rules and regulations.

  51. This morning, as we look to our passage, what we see is that because the gospel is enough,

  52. we can pray specifically and boldly to the Lord on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Christ

  53. that they would realize for themselves all the glorious power of God for them in the gospel.

  54. So let's take a look at this gospel-shaped prayer this morning for the saints.

  55. And we're going to see it in three parts.

  56. This will be our outline this morning.

  57. If you're taking notes, I'll try to make it easy for you to follow along.

  58. We'll see three parts this morning.

  59. First, the prayer.

  60. Second, the purpose.

  61. And third, the power.

  62. And as we do, I just want you to notice here, just briefly, I want to make this comment.

  63. There is no copyright on this prayer.

  64. And it would be my desire for us as a church that we would lift this prayer straight off the page

  65. and pray this daily, if not weekly, for one another and our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  66. So let's see what Paul's praying here.

  67. First, we see the prayer.

  68. The prayer.

  69. And we see this in verse 9.

  70. Look there with me.

  71. He says,

  72. And so from the day we heard, meaning the day that we heard about you,

  73. the day that we heard about your faith in Christ from the Paphras,

  74. from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you,

  75. asking that you may be filled with knowledge.

  76. Now, Paul is here for just a moment.

  77. And remember, again, what's going on in Colossae.

  78. Because if you were a member of the church at Colossae and you heard those key words, right?

  79. Filled.

  80. Knowledge.

  81. You would have some alarms lining up.

  82. Lighting up.

  83. Your ears would perk up at hearing this.

  84. Because Paul is hijacking the language that the false teachers are using.

  85. These are their lines.

  86. This is the exact same angle that the false teachers are taking.

  87. Remember, they're promising.

  88. They're coming to the church at Colossae saying,

  89. If you really want to reach spiritual fullness,

  90. you need some of our special knowledge.

  91. If you want to be spiritually filled,

  92. well, you need our man-made regulations.

  93. Paul knows exactly what he's doing here.

  94. And this is a strategic use of these key words here.

  95. And he says,

  96. Yes, I agree.

  97. Fullness matters.

  98. Knowledge matters.

  99. Knowledge matters.

  100. But the Christian's path to fullness is not through human regulation.

  101. But rather, it is through divine revelation.

  102. Say that again.

  103. The Christian's path to fullness and knowledge is not through human regulation and man-made rules,

  104. but rather through divine revelation.

  105. It is not through secret, special knowledge of the few and the elite.

  106. It is through personal, intimate knowledge of God as he has revealed himself in the gospel.

  107. This is why Paul prays that you may be filled with knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

  108. When this knowledge of the will of God is not the prized possession of a few elite Christians.

  109. Rather, every single Christian can be filled with the knowledge of the will of God.

  110. Do you believe this?

  111. Every single Christian, meaning every single man and every single woman, every single boy, every single girl,

  112. who has heard the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  113. and by his grace has understood the grace of God in truth,

  114. they can be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

  115. Do you realize, Christian, it is entirely possible for you to genuinely be filled with knowledge of his will?

  116. Why? Well, because he has given us his book, his word, his revealed will,

  117. and he has given every Christian his spirit to empower the reading and the studying and the preaching of the word of God

  118. so that we might understand the revealed will of God.

  119. We have his word and we have his spirit,

  120. and Paul says, well, that's enough for you.

  121. Now, this is one of the major issues in the Protestant Reformation.

  122. If you've ever studied this era of church history in the 16th century,

  123. for centuries the medieval church restricted access to the average believer.

  124. And they told them that only the priesthood, only the papacy, only the bishops, only the pope

  125. could rightly interpret the will of God.

  126. And so in order for the average Christian in the pews to understand what God's will is,

  127. well, they have to go through the professional clergy.

  128. They get their directions from the top.

  129. They get their directions from them.

  130. Entire worship services like this were held entirely in Latin,

  131. which, oh, by the way, nobody spoke or understood except for the clergy.

  132. They just had to go in faith that these elite special people with this elite special knowledge,

  133. that they were giving them the truth.

  134. But of course, we know the story.

  135. The reformers made the dangerous decision to actually take up and read the word of God for themselves.

  136. And then they made the dangerous decision to go and translate the word of God

  137. into the language of the common people

  138. and to write and publish commentaries on the word of God

  139. that could be read and understood by average Joe in the pew.

  140. And guess what happened?

  141. The reformation took place and caught like wildfire.

  142. You didn't have to be a spiritual elite to grow in the knowledge and the will of God.

  143. You simply had to have the spirit of God and the word of God.

  144. So Paul, understanding this, prays for these believers

  145. that they would be filled with all knowledge of his will.

  146. They don't need the secret knowledge of these false teachers.

  147. They simply need the word of God and the spirit of God,

  148. which, by the way, they already have because the gospel has come to them.

  149. But then we should ask, well, what does that knowledge actually look like in practice?

  150. This is going to be our second point this morning.

  151. We should ask why?

  152. To what end does Paul pray these things?

  153. And we'll spend the bulk of our time here in this second point.

  154. Second, we see the purpose of Paul's prayer.

  155. Why does Paul pray that they would be filled with knowledge?

  156. To what end?

  157. And what does he hope that this knowledge will produce in them?

  158. He tells us in verse 10,

  159. Don't you want to do that, church?

  160. This is such a vital truth.

  161. I need to stop here and make this point.

  162. Do you understand that true knowledge of God,

  163. it accords with a godly life?

  164. True knowledge of God will be lived out in your life Monday through Saturday.

  165. True understanding of who God is,

  166. it must necessarily result in a life lived for God's glory.

  167. There is absolutely no place for a classroom only,

  168. intellectual only, academic only, so-called knowledge of God

  169. that has no impact whatsoever on a Christian's daily life.

  170. If you can study about God in a book and then shut the book

  171. and go out the door and live in blatant, unrepentant sin,

  172. you should know that is not biblical Christianity.

  173. And you may have knowledge about God,

  174. but you may not know God.

  175. You can come to church,

  176. and you can sit through the sermon,

  177. and you can sing the songs,

  178. and then go home.

  179. And if there's no actual difference in your life

  180. compared to your non-believing neighbors,

  181. again, you may be doing religion,

  182. but you may not actually be walking with the Lord.

  183. The great theologian Herman Bivink,

  184. he says it like this.

  185. He says,

  186. Scripture knows nothing of a knowledge that is merely academic.

  187. To know God is to love Him,

  188. to fear Him,

  189. and to trust Him.

  190. And to be filled with the knowledge of His will

  191. means that our entire existence is captured by His truth.

  192. Friend, is this true of you?

  193. Here Paul says,

  194. to be filled with the knowledge of God

  195. and all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

  196. That sort of fullness will show itself up in your life.

  197. Be filled, again,

  198. so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord.

  199. And so my question becomes then,

  200. well, what in the world does that look like?

  201. What does that look like?

  202. Paul gives us four clear marks

  203. of a God-fearing life here in this passage.

  204. Four clear marks of a God-fearing life.

  205. You can use this sort of as a self-assessment tool

  206. as you look at your own life.

  207. The first mark he says,

  208. he says,

  209. the God-pleasing life bears fruit.

  210. The God-pleasing life bears fruit.

  211. He says,

  212. bearing fruit and increasing in every good work.

  213. This is what the gospel does in the life of a believer.

  214. Isn't he,

  215. this is what he said earlier in the chapter.

  216. As he said,

  217. the word of the gospel in all the world

  218. is bearing fruit and increasing

  219. as it also does among you.

  220. And that fruit of the gospel,

  221. it doesn't just look like a polished exterior

  222. that just keeps all the rules

  223. and looks good on the outside.

  224. He says,

  225. no, no, no, no, no.

  226. That fruit looks like faith in Christ.

  227. It looks like love for all the saints.

  228. He tells us in Galatians,

  229. that fruit looks like love and joy and peace,

  230. patience and kindness and goodness

  231. and gentleness and faithfulness and self-control.

  232. This is the fruit that the Spirit brings about

  233. in the lives of those who have trusted

  234. in the good news of Christ.

  235. The path to bearing fruit

  236. is not rigid, ritualistic, legalistic,

  237. man-made rule-keeping traditions.

  238. It's found in driving your roots

  239. deeper and deeper into Christ.

  240. What does he tell us?

  241. Abide in me and you will what?

  242. You will bear much fruit.

  243. That's Mark number one.

  244. Mark number two, Paul says,

  245. the God-pleasing life increases in knowledge.

  246. The God-pleasing life increases in knowledge,

  247. bearing fruit and increasing in the knowledge of God.

  248. Key word here, increasing.

  249. Increasing.

  250. In other words, church,

  251. the God-pleasing life is not stagnant.

  252. The God-pleasing life is a constant pursuit.

  253. The God-pleasing life is not content

  254. with where you are in your knowledge of God.

  255. The God-pleasing life is eager to grow

  256. and eager to learn not just knowledge about God,

  257. but again, knowledge of God.

  258. Let me ask you, church,

  259. how are you increasing in your knowledge of God?

  260. What are you learning about him

  261. that's not just going into your brain,

  262. but seeking down into your heart

  263. so that you love him more?

  264. What are you marveling at about who God is

  265. and what he's done?

  266. Theology is not just for the nerds.

  267. Okay?

  268. Theology is not just for the spiritual elite.

  269. Theology is the study of God.

  270. And guess what?

  271. We're going to be doing theology

  272. for the rest of eternity,

  273. if you're in Christ.

  274. For all of the rest of eternity,

  275. we're going to be studying

  276. and diving deeper

  277. and increasing in our knowledge

  278. of who God is

  279. and marveling at his attributes,

  280. that he's good

  281. and that he's holy,

  282. that he's infinite,

  283. that he's eternal,

  284. that he's gracious,

  285. that he's wise,

  286. that he's just,

  287. that he's kind.

  288. We will spend the rest of eternity

  289. growing in the knowledge of God.

  290. Paul says,

  291. if you're in Christ,

  292. guess what?

  293. You can start right now.

  294. Where do we start?

  295. Again,

  296. we have his own special revelation

  297. right here.

  298. We have his own revealed will,

  299. his own special self-revelation

  300. of who he is in his word.

  301. But why do we study the word of God?

  302. Why do I, week after week,

  303. just open this book up

  304. and try and communicate what it says?

  305. It's because this is where God

  306. makes himself known.

  307. The word of God

  308. empowered by the spirit of God

  309. for the growth and the good

  310. of the people of God.

  311. That's the recipe.

  312. You can start in prayer

  313. and communicating with him

  314. and speaking back to him

  315. and talking with him

  316. and praying his words back to him.

  317. You can read a thousand good books.

  318. We can benefit, church,

  319. from the centuries of wise believers

  320. that have gone before us.

  321. It's almost embarrassing

  322. how much knowledge and wisdom

  323. we can gain from others.

  324. This is what the Christian life is.

  325. It's a communal pursuit

  326. of the knowledge of God.

  327. It's a body growing up

  328. and walking together in his will.

  329. But of course,

  330. the truth is that this type

  331. of lifelong pursuit

  332. requires strength, doesn't it?

  333. It requires strength.

  334. It requires strength,

  335. not our strength,

  336. but rather his strength.

  337. This is the third mark

  338. that Paul gives us.

  339. The God-pleasing life,

  340. verse 11,

  341. requires his strength.

  342. He prays that they would be filled

  343. for a life pleasing to him,

  344. being strengthened with all power

  345. according to his glorious might,

  346. for all endurance and patience

  347. with joy.

  348. You know,

  349. the thing about legalism,

  350. this rigid law-keeping,

  351. right?

  352. Think about it like this.

  353. Legalistic, ritualistic,

  354. religious law-keeping

  355. does not require the power of God.

  356. This is why we're drawn to it,

  357. to be honest.

  358. Legalism does not need God's help.

  359. It does not need God's strength.

  360. What does it demand?

  361. It demands your strength.

  362. It gives you a list of do's and don'ts,

  363. and it says if you just muscle up,

  364. if you just grit your teeth,

  365. you can get it done

  366. if you try hard enough.

  367. If you're serious enough about God,

  368. you can check off this list

  369. and you will make it.

  370. You can do it

  371. if you're really serious about the Lord.

  372. That's what legalism tells you.

  373. But true Christianity,

  374. you know what it says?

  375. You can't do this.

  376. Here's the motivational talk

  377. you didn't know you needed this morning,

  378. right?

  379. The gospel of Jesus Christ,

  380. it says you cannot live a life

  381. worthy of the Lord

  382. in your own strength.

  383. You can't do it.

  384. You can't begin to discern

  385. His own will

  386. by your own knowledge.

  387. It's spiritually discerned.

  388. You can't begin

  389. to live a life

  390. that's pleasing to Him

  391. in the slightest bit

  392. by your own merit.

  393. The sooner we grasp this truth,

  394. the better off we'll be.

  395. Christian books

  396. have no place

  397. in the self-help section.

  398. The bad news is

  399. we can't do it.

  400. But the good news is,

  401. Paul tells us,

  402. God Himself supplies

  403. the strength that we need.

  404. God Himself supplies the strength.

  405. He gives us everything that we need

  406. to live a life that's pleasing to Him.

  407. It is His provision

  408. that makes the God-pleasing life possible.

  409. It is His power

  410. that makes the God-pleasing life possible.

  411. It's His strength

  412. that makes the God-pleasing life possible.

  413. And apart from His strength,

  414. you can't do it.

  415. If it were,

  416. based on our own strength,

  417. to hold on to Him

  418. or to climb a ladder

  419. up to reach Him,

  420. guess what, church?

  421. We would lose our grip on Him

  422. every single time.

  423. This is why Paul prays

  424. the way that he does.

  425. May you be strengthened

  426. with all power

  427. according to His glorious might

  428. so that we may endure

  429. and have patience

  430. and joy.

  431. This is God's work.

  432. And when you realize, church,

  433. that the entire Christian life

  434. is empowered by His strength,

  435. and then and only then

  436. will we understand

  437. the fourth mark here

  438. of a God-fearing life.

  439. Fourth.

  440. Fourth and finally.

  441. Verse 12.

  442. He says,

  443. the God-pleasing life

  444. is filled with gratitude.

  445. He says,

  446. giving thanks to God the Father.

  447. Giving thanks to God the Father.

  448. The fact is,

  449. you will not give thanks to God

  450. if you believe

  451. that it all depends on you.

  452. You will not give thanks to God

  453. if you believe

  454. that it's all dependent

  455. on your strength.

  456. When you go to a hotel

  457. and you don't walk up

  458. to the hotel door

  459. and open it yourself

  460. and lug your own bags inside

  461. and then turn

  462. and thank the doorman.

  463. Gratitude is the overflow

  464. of a recognition of need.

  465. Gratitude is the overflow

  466. of a recognition

  467. that you have been served.

  468. You have been helped.

  469. You have been unable

  470. to do something

  471. and someone has taken it

  472. upon themselves

  473. to do it for you.

  474. Someone else has served you

  475. in a way that you

  476. could not serve yourself.

  477. But the man or the woman

  478. that's relying

  479. on their own strength,

  480. the man or the woman

  481. that's depending on human effort

  482. to keep man-made rules,

  483. they don't overflow with thanks.

  484. You know what they overflow with?

  485. Pride.

  486. It's either pride

  487. when you do it well

  488. or it's despair

  489. when you don't.

  490. It's not God,

  491. thank you

  492. for what you've done.

  493. It's not God,

  494. thank you for saving me.

  495. It's not God,

  496. I was unable

  497. and I was lost

  498. and I was dead in sin

  499. and you made me alive

  500. in Christ.

  501. You did what I couldn't do.

  502. You kept the law perfectly

  503. when I failed.

  504. You abolished death.

  505. You resurrected Christ

  506. from the grave.

  507. I couldn't do any of that

  508. on my own.

  509. No,

  510. legalism says,

  511. well look what I can do.

  512. I can keep my rules

  513. and I can puff myself up.

  514. I can pad my own stats

  515. and get my own recognition

  516. for my own pride.

  517. Paul looks down this road

  518. of legalism

  519. and he sees the end of it

  520. because Paul has lived this himself.

  521. He sees the end

  522. of what comes

  523. from these legalistic rules

  524. and regulations

  525. and at the end of that road

  526. is not glory to God.

  527. It is glory to self.

  528. And so he says,

  529. you know what?

  530. A life that is pleasing to God,

  531. it looks like humble gratitude.

  532. Overflowing.

  533. The thanksgiving.

  534. Because at the end of the day,

  535. the God-pleasing life

  536. understands that

  537. God's pleasure in you

  538. is not based on your performance

  539. for Him.

  540. Can I say that again?

  541. Church, do you understand?

  542. Christian, do you understand?

  543. God's pleasure in you

  544. is not based on your performance

  545. for Him.

  546. Be free of depending

  547. on your own strength.

  548. faith.

  549. Be free

  550. of religious legalism

  551. that demands more

  552. and more

  553. and more

  554. and more

  555. and more

  556. in order to earn God's favor.

  557. Be free of these lies

  558. of the enemy.

  559. God's favor,

  560. His pleasure in you

  561. is not dependent

  562. on your performance

  563. for Him.

  564. It is based on

  565. the finished work

  566. of Christ

  567. that is given to you.

  568. Not by your rule keeping

  569. but simply by faith.

  570. This is the power of God

  571. that will guard us

  572. from the temptation

  573. to perform our way

  574. into God's grace

  575. and it's this power of God

  576. that will enable us

  577. to live a life

  578. worthy of the Lord.

  579. It's the power of God

  580. and the gospel of Christ.

  581. The finished work

  582. of Jesus Christ

  583. is enough.

  584. This is where Paul points us

  585. in our third

  586. and final point

  587. this morning.

  588. Third,

  589. we see the power

  590. for a God-pleasing life.

  591. What is it?

  592. The power is

  593. the gospel

  594. of Jesus Christ.

  595. It's not

  596. these man-made rules.

  597. It is

  598. the gospel.

  599. And don't you love

  600. how Paul's prayer

  601. is just

  602. so rooted

  603. in the gospel

  604. of Jesus Christ?

  605. He reminds

  606. these saints,

  607. these brothers

  608. and sisters

  609. in Christ

  610. all the way

  611. off at Colossae

  612. not what they

  613. have to do next

  614. but what God

  615. has already done

  616. for them

  617. in Christ.

  618. The gospel

  619. by definition

  620. is a miracle

  621. of God's grace.

  622. Don't you realize

  623. grace can't be earned?

  624. Then it's not grace.

  625. If you earn grace

  626. it's not grace anymore.

  627. It's a paycheck.

  628. God says

  629. the gospel

  630. is a message

  631. of God's

  632. unmerited grace.

  633. no man

  634. can add

  635. anything to it

  636. on their best day.

  637. No Christian

  638. can rob from it

  639. on their worst day.

  640. It is grace

  641. upon grace

  642. upon grace

  643. towards sinners

  644. like us

  645. in Christ.

  646. It's a finished work.

  647. Paul shows us

  648. what God

  649. has done for us

  650. in three

  651. absolutely

  652. breathtaking actions

  653. here.

  654. And we'll walk

  655. through it

  656. and then we'll close.

  657. What has God

  658. done for you?

  659. Christian

  660. Paul tells us

  661. one

  662. he has qualified

  663. you

  664. to share

  665. in the inheritance

  666. of saints

  667. and light.

  668. God has qualified

  669. you

  670. to share

  671. in the inheritance

  672. of the saints

  673. and light.

  674. You know

  675. the lies

  676. of legalism

  677. they give you

  678. this list

  679. of do's and don'ts

  680. in order to be

  681. qualified.

  682. If you just

  683. check this box

  684. then you will make it.

  685. And just so we're clear

  686. that's not

  687. just a problem

  688. back then in Colossae.

  689. This is a right now

  690. problem isn't it?

  691. It's a right here

  692. problem isn't it?

  693. Our hearts

  694. are so wired

  695. to return

  696. to this legalistic

  697. performance

  698. based religion

  699. where we think

  700. we gotta do something

  701. to measure up

  702. and earn God's favor.

  703. The lie

  704. that we can believe

  705. is that we must

  706. do certain things

  707. in order to

  708. be qualified.

  709. What does Paul say?

  710. God

  711. has qualified

  712. you in Christ.

  713. God

  714. has qualified

  715. you

  716. in Christ

  717. to inherit

  718. this glorious

  719. inheritance

  720. of the saints

  721. in light.

  722. Not only this

  723. verse 13

  724. tells us

  725. he has

  726. delivered us

  727. from the domain

  728. of darkness

  729. and again

  730. do you notice

  731. this is past tense?

  732. This is past

  733. this is something

  734. God's already done.

  735. He has delivered

  736. us from the domain

  737. of darkness

  738. and I know

  739. what you're thinking

  740. man it looks

  741. plenty dark

  742. around here

  743. doesn't it?

  744. In this country

  745. where we live

  746. this area

  747. of the world

  748. where we live

  749. there is

  750. plenty of darkness

  751. all around us

  752. isn't there?

  753. The same was true

  754. in Colossae

  755. they wrestled

  756. with all the same

  757. powers of darkness

  758. that we wrestle

  759. with here.

  760. How in the world

  761. can Paul say

  762. he's delivered you

  763. from the domain

  764. of darkness?

  765. We're still in it.

  766. Paul is saying

  767. something has

  768. happened

  769. so that you

  770. even though you

  771. still live

  772. all around it

  773. it's all around you

  774. something has

  775. happened

  776. so that you

  777. can say

  778. I no longer

  779. belong to this

  780. darkness all around me.

  781. What's happened?

  782. Christ

  783. has triumphed

  784. over the powers

  785. of sin and darkness

  786. at the cross.

  787. Christ has

  788. shattered

  789. all the power

  790. all the authority

  791. of the enemy

  792. at the cross

  793. in the empty tomb.

  794. Christ has

  795. disarmed

  796. the rulers

  797. and the authorities

  798. he has conquered

  799. the dark domain

  800. at the cross

  801. of Christ.

  802. So now

  803. even though

  804. we live

  805. in a fallen world

  806. those who belong

  807. to Christ

  808. can say with confidence

  809. I don't belong

  810. to this domain

  811. of darkness anymore

  812. the gospel

  813. has set me free.

  814. He has qualified us

  815. he has delivered us

  816. and look at the rest

  817. of the verse

  818. says he has

  819. transferred us

  820. into the kingdom

  821. of his beloved son

  822. in whom we have

  823. redemption

  824. the forgiveness

  825. of sins.

  826. here's some good news

  827. for you church

  828. if you are

  829. in Christ

  830. simply by faith

  831. in him

  832. you are already

  833. right now

  834. in this present moment

  835. you are a citizen

  836. of the kingdom

  837. of God

  838. he has already

  839. transferred you

  840. into his kingdom

  841. you belong

  842. to his kingdom

  843. John Calvin

  844. says it like this

  845. he says

  846. this is a word

  847. transferred

  848. this is a word

  849. used of empires

  850. when a king

  851. takes an entire

  852. population

  853. and relocates them

  854. into a new

  855. glorious territory

  856. we are not merely

  857. improved prisoners

  858. in the old kingdom

  859. we are fully

  860. naturalized citizens

  861. in the new kingdom

  862. of his beloved son

  863. our legal standing

  864. is completely new

  865. and our old master

  866. has no right

  867. to demand taxes

  868. or obedience

  869. from us

  870. ever again

  871. by his finished

  872. work

  873. Christ Jesus

  874. has purchased

  875. everything we need

  876. for our redemption

  877. Christ Jesus

  878. by his blood

  879. has purchased

  880. the forgiveness

  881. of all

  882. of our sins

  883. Charles Spurgeon

  884. commenting on this passage

  885. he says

  886. it is a done thing

  887. we are not arriving

  888. at his kingdom

  889. we are already there

  890. we are wrestling

  891. to get out of the dungeon

  892. of darkness

  893. the doors have been

  894. smashed

  895. and we've been brought

  896. out

  897. into the glorious

  898. light

  899. of the sun

  900. church

  901. this

  902. perfect

  903. finished

  904. work of Christ

  905. this is the power

  906. that we need

  907. to live a life

  908. pleasing to God

  909. nothing else

  910. this is the power

  911. that we need

  912. to resist

  913. all the many lies

  914. from the enemy

  915. that tell us

  916. to do more

  917. be more

  918. achieve more

  919. in order to be

  920. spiritually full

  921. Paul says

  922. if you are in

  923. Christ

  924. you have everything

  925. you need

  926. in him

  927. the power

  928. for a God

  929. pleasing life

  930. is yours

  931. right now

  932. in

  933. Christ

  934. friend

  935. if you are

  936. not

  937. a believer

  938. in Christ

  939. my prayer

  940. for you

  941. this morning

  942. is that

  943. you would be

  944. free

  945. from the lies

  946. of performance

  947. from the lies

  948. that would tell you

  949. that you must

  950. do more

  951. achieve more

  952. be more

  953. in order to be

  954. pleasing to God

  955. but rather

  956. that God

  957. by the power

  958. of his spirit

  959. through the

  960. proclamation

  961. of his word

  962. would open

  963. the eyes

  964. of your heart

  965. so you might

  966. trust fully

  967. in the finished

  968. work of Jesus

  969. Christ

  970. it's enough

  971. and church

  972. my prayer

  973. for you

  974. is that

  975. you too

  976. would look

  977. to the finished

  978. work of Christ

  979. and that you

  980. would leave

  981. here walking

  982. in a manner

  983. worthy of the

  984. Lord

  985. resting in the

  986. power of God

  987. at work in

  988. you who believe

  989. because of what

  990. he's done

  991. I would ask

  992. one thing of you

  993. as we close

  994. by way of application

  995. church

  996. would you

  997. pray this

  998. prayer

  999. for me

  1000. this week

  1001. I told you

  1002. there's no copyright

  1003. on this prayer

  1004. I want you

  1005. some of you

  1006. have committed

  1007. to pray

  1008. for me

  1009. and I appreciate

  1010. that so much

  1011. if you're looking

  1012. or wondering

  1013. what to pray

  1014. for your pastor

  1015. please take this

  1016. prayer

  1017. and would you

  1018. pray that for me

  1019. and then would you

  1020. look at your

  1021. your fellow brother

  1022. and sister

  1023. in Christ

  1024. and would you

  1025. pray this

  1026. for one another

  1027. this week

  1028. would you pray

  1029. for one another

  1030. that they would

  1031. be filled

  1032. with all spiritual

  1033. wisdom and understanding

  1034. and the knowledge

  1035. of his will

  1036. so as to walk

  1037. in a manner

  1038. worthy of the

  1039. Lord

  1040. not to earn

  1041. his favor

  1042. but because they

  1043. have been given

  1044. his favor already

  1045. in the finished

  1046. work of Christ

  1047. to pray

  1048. that we would

  1049. walk in a manner

  1050. worthy of the

  1051. Lord

  1052. because he has

  1053. qualified us

  1054. delivered us

  1055. transferred us

  1056. redeemed us

  1057. forgiven us

  1058. all at the

  1059. cross of Christ

  1060. let's pray

  1061. father

  1062. we praise you

  1063. God for the

  1064. finished work

  1065. of the gospel

  1066. we praise you

  1067. God for the

  1068. finished work

  1069. of Christ

  1070. we praise you

  1071. that his

  1072. work is enough

  1073. father that he

  1074. alone is what

  1075. qualifies sinners

  1076. like us to share

  1077. in the inheritance

  1078. of the saints

  1079. in light

  1080. we pray that we

  1081. would not

  1082. fall victim

  1083. to the many

  1084. lies of the

  1085. enemy

  1086. that would

  1087. lead us

  1088. away from

  1089. fully trusting

  1090. in the finished

  1091. work of Jesus

  1092. in the gospel

  1093. we pray God

  1094. that we would

  1095. walk in a manner

  1096. worthy of the

  1097. Lord

  1098. fully pleasing

  1099. to you

  1100. bearing fruit

  1101. in every good

  1102. work

  1103. we praise in

  1104. Jesus name

  1105. amen

  1106. may

  1107. may

  1108. may
