-
When life gets chaotic, it's easy to start keeping score of everything we lack, to look at our lives through a scarcity mindset and lose sight of how much we've actually been given.
-
In James 1:17, he directs our eyes back up.
-
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
-
James references the night sky.
-
The lights move and shadows shift and slide.
-
But the one who made them does not flicker or change.
-
Every good thing in your life, even down to the ones you've stopped noticing, came from a father whose goodness never wavers.
-
So gratitude isn't pretending life is easy.
-
It's remembering who has been giving steadily the whole time.
-
Let's start by thanking God that he is unchanging, that his goodness towards you doesn't shift with your circumstances or your mood.
-
Thank him that in Jesus He has opened his hand to you and held nothing back.
-
The ones that have quietly faded to the background.
-
What is something you've been taking for granted that you want to thank him for right now?
-
Name it and ask him to make gratitude your first instinct, even on the hard days.
-
Let your shoulders relax for a moment.
-
Picture that steady light overhead, no flicker, no shifting shadow, and let it settle you.
-
Let this be your prayer.
-
Thank you that you are good and you do not change.
-
Ask God to give them a glimpse of His light today so they know they aren't forgotten.
-
Father, thank you for being a giver who delights in good gifts and never changes like the shadows.
-
Forgive us for focusing on what we lack instead of worshiping you for what we have.
-
We anchor our hearts in your unwavering goodness today.
-
Amen.
