  1. I believe that you normally stand for the

  2. reading of God's word. So if you would

  3. please stand with me in the honor of

  4. the reading of God's word.

  5. Again, this is Psalm 8. This is God's

  6. holy word to us.

  7. Oh, lord, our lord.

  8. How majestic is your name in all the

  9. earth.

  10. You have set your glory above the heavens,

  11. out of the mouths of babies and infants.

  12. You have established strength because of your foes,

  13. to still the enemy and the avenger.

  14. When I look at the heavens,

  15. the work of your fingers, the moon, and

  16. the stars which you have set in place,

  17. what is man that you're mindful of him?

  18. And the son of man that you care

  19. for him.

  20. Yet you have made him a little lower

  21. than the heavenly beings and crowned him with

  22. glory and honor.

  23. You've given him dominion

  24. over the works of your hands.

  25. You have put all things under his feet,

  26. all sheep and oxen,

  27. and also the beasts of the field,

  28. the birds of the heaven, and the fish

  29. of the sea, whatever passes along the paths

  30. of the sea. Oh, lord, our lord,

  31. How majestic

  32. is your name

  33. in all the earth.

  34. The word of the lord.

  35. Thanks be to god. You may be seated.

  36. Well, let me ask you a question that

  37. Psalm 8 asked us this morning.

  38. A very important question, and it simply is

  39. this, what is man?

  40. Just that generic word for human beings, not

  41. males,

  42. but mankind, humanity, however we want to understand

  43. that. But what is

  44. man? And we'll see that that comes right

  45. in the middle of our Psalm, but verse

  46. 1 and verse 9 book in the Psalm

  47. with the majestic name of God. So there's

  48. a big clue

  49. that whatever,

  50. however we're gonna answer that question, what is

  51. man, we need to look to God for

  52. him to tell us what it means to

  53. be a human

  54. being.

  55. And that's simply what I wanna do this

  56. morning is walk through Psalm 8,

  57. section by section, and try to fill in

  58. an answer to that all important question.

  59. Yes, in our day and age, but really

  60. in every day and age.

  61. What is man? What does it mean to

  62. be created

  63. in the image

  64. of God?

  65. And when you first hear that question, I

  66. wonder how you answer it in your own

  67. mind. What are you? What is

  68. a human

  69. being?

  70. I think one of the ways, at least

  71. in our culture that we tend to answer

  72. that question is by thinking about the name

  73. that we're gonna make from ourselves,

  74. the things that we are going to accomplish.

  75. And deep down, we all love that story,

  76. don't we? The rags to riches story or

  77. someone who has a goal and puts their

  78. minds to it and accomplishes

  79. that

  80. goal.

  81. They make it big.

  82. And that's not always a bad thing.

  83. This quest to make a name for ourselves,

  84. to understand who we are, like I said,

  85. it's not just a modern question. Because if

  86. we go all the way back to Genesis

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  87. chapter 11,

  88. and the famous story about the tower

  89. of Babel. It is Babel. Right? It's Babel

  90. in New Zealand. I always forget how to

  91. say it. Babel. I think it's the tower

  92. of Babel.

  93. Either way, you know what I'm talking about.

  94. And there we see that making a name

  95. for themselves is not this God given pursuit

  96. to use the gifts and the talents and

  97. the opportunity he's given us, but it's actually

  98. to make a name for ourselves is to

  99. put ourselves in the place of God.

  100. And so in Genesis 11 chapter Genesis 11

    Genesis 11:4

  101. verse 4, excuse me, we read simply this,

  102. the nations are talking, trying to metaphorically build

  103. a temple up to the heavens. Let us

  104. make a name

  105. for ourselves.

  106. See, they're seeking to answer that all important

  107. question, what is man,

  108. by putting themselves as the creator

  109. instead of being the creature

  110. that they are made

  111. to be.

  112. And so today, soulmate's gonna help us answer

  113. this question.

  114. What is man?

  115. And and really what God is saying to

  116. us

  117. as we answer that question

  118. is that you are a glorious

  119. creature

  120. created in his image, but you only find

  121. that glory that your heart so desperately

  122. craves

  123. as you look to him,

  124. and live in the safety and security

  125. of his

  126. majestic

  127. name.

  128. So Psalm 8 calls us back by faith

  129. to God,

  130. to live in that name

  131. this morning.

  132. This is how we begin to live the

  133. truly human life.

  134. So to answer that question, let's, let's take

  135. it in 3 parts. We'll think first about

  136. God's majestic name,

  137. and then we'll think about humanity's

  138. smallness,

  139. but then we'll also think about humanity's

  140. glory.

  141. So let's jump in. God's glorious name.

  142. This is verse

  143. 1, and also verse 9, that beautiful refrain

  144. that we read from our Psalm. Oh Lord,

  145. our Lord, how majestic is your name in

  146. all the earth. So we start here with

  147. a a name of God. David writing this

  148. song is praising God using his name, and

  149. notice what he's what he says, oh, Lord,

  150. with the all capsulc up there,

  151. and then our Lord.

  152. We could translate that, oh, Yahweh, our sovereign,

  153. or oh, Yahweh,

  154. our creator, oh, Yahweh, our

  155. lord.

  156. And the order here seems important

  157. that we have Yahweh and then

  158. lord. The all caps lord,

  159. by the way, is just a transliteration of

  160. the Hebrew word Yahweh, but that's important because

  161. Yahweh is God's relational,

  162. personal,

  163. covenantal

  164. name.

  165. We don't know the exact details of Psalm

  166. 8, but if we back up to Psalm

  167. 7, there's injustice and enemies of Israel all

  168. around, and the Psalm ends by saying that

  169. I will praise the Lord. Jump ahead to

  170. Psalm 9,

  171. there's injustice all around. Yet again, we find

  172. that even though there's injustice, I will praise

  173. the Lord, and we have Psalm 8, this

  174. doxological

  175. hymn of thanksgiving tucked right into the middle.

  176. So there's probably enemies, trial, and trouble all

  177. around, and David orders this name of God

  178. intentionally saying that this God who we're gonna

  179. praise, even though life is hard, is Yahweh.

  180. He's God who initiates relationship with his people.

  181. He's the God who keeps that wonderful promise

  182. that really summarizes all of the Bible, I

  183. will be your God and you will be

  184. my people.

  185. Now why is this order important? Well that

  186. context,

  187. it's hard. Life is hard. We have this

  188. idealistic picture in Psalm 8 of created,

  189. created, the created world and humans created in

  190. God's image, but it comes to us in

  191. this fallen context.

  192. And so he wants to assure us that

  193. this God who we stand up to praise

  194. when life is difficult

  195. is Yahweh, the God who cares, the God

  196. who is present to help

  197. and to redeem.

  198. And only then does he remind us that

  199. this God Yahweh is also our lord, our

  200. our our master, our sovereign, our our governor

  201. as the older translation sometimes

  202. puts it.

  203. So there's this twofold

  204. name of God, our lord, our lord.

  205. And following, scripture at this point, because back

  206. in Exodus chapter 3, when God first makes

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  207. his name known to Israel, and the burning

  208. bush that doesn't burn up, when he speaks

  209. to Moses, he says, I am.

  210. I am the eternal God. The one who

  211. simply

  212. is. The one who has life from his

  213. self, who has no beginning and no end.

  214. I simply am,

  215. but he's also the God who hears the

  216. cries of his people.

  217. He's Yahweh

  218. who sends Moses

  219. to deliver Israel in the Exodus, that great

  220. salvation event

  221. of the old testament.

  222. So this is our Lord,

  223. our Lord. This twofold name and David is

  224. saying how majestic is this name? You're both

  225. sovereign, creator of all things. The Lord in

  226. charge of charge of us. We owe you

  227. our allegiance and worship, but yet you're so

  228. gracious to us. You're Yahweh, you're ever present

  229. and ready to help your people.

  230. So his name

  231. is majestic because God is majestic. That's what

  232. David wants us to know as we begin

  233. looking into Psalm 8.

  234. But again, I said there's injustice and enemies

  235. all around, and that helps us understand verse

  236. 2 if you look with me.

  237. This verse is a little bit strange, but

  238. it's beautiful.

  239. Out of the mouths of babies and infants,

  240. you have established strength because of your foes

  241. to steal the enemy

  242. in the avenger.

  243. Now I'll I'll prove this to you in

  244. a second, but what that is saying, or

  245. I'll try to prove it to you in

  246. a second, but what that verse is saying

  247. is that our majestic God, what is man

  248. remember we're answering that question. What does man,

  249. well our majestic God thinks so highly of

  250. us that he uses our prayers

  251. to defeat his enemies.

  252. He's so kind that he uses our prayers

  253. to defeat his enemies. Why do I say

  254. that? Well, well, notice that these children and

  255. infants are speaking,

  256. And that as they speak, a stronghold or

  257. a bulwark is established.

  258. Avengers

  259. are overthrown, enemies

  260. are silenced.

  261. And this leads most commentators to the history

  262. of reflection, and I think they're right to

  263. conclude that this speaking,

  264. the words that pour out of these infants

  265. and children's mouths are the prayers of God's

  266. people.

  267. God's children who cry out to him

  268. to right every wrong, to forgive sin, to

  269. make enemies into friends as they are converted

  270. by the gospel.

  271. So God's name is majestic as it, comes

  272. through the mouths of his children

  273. in prayer, we might say.

  274. And we have a big hint from the

  275. life of Jesus that this is one way

  276. we can understand this verse.

  277. In Matthew chapter 21 verse 6,

    Matthew 21:6

  278. in the triumphal entry, as Jesus rides into

  279. Jerusalem,

  280. there's a literal fulfillment of Psalm 8:2.

    Psalms 8:2

  281. As Jesus rides in on a donkey, do

  282. you remember what what happens?

  283. The Hosannas cry out from whom?

  284. The mouths of children.

  285. So Jesus literally is carried along by the

  286. prayers of children as he rides in to

  287. do what? To cleanse the temple.

  288. A sign of the coming judgment against the

  289. religious leaders,

  290. who instead of understanding that Christ is their

  291. king, has have usurped his authority

  292. and put himself as king.

  293. And then what does he do? He goes

  294. to the cross,

  295. dies in our place to forgive our sins.

  296. But Colossians 2 tells us as important as

  297. that is, as he dies to forgive our

  298. sins, he also defeats the rulers and authorities,

  299. the powers

  300. of the heavenly

  301. places.

  302. See Christ

  303. in his life, death, and resurrection defeats our

  304. enemies, but amazingly at least in part, he's

  305. carried along by the prayers

  306. of children. He accomplishes his purposes

  307. through

  308. his

  309. people.

  310. This God who is I am, this God

  311. who is Yahweh, our sovereign

  312. creator.

  313. So what is man as we consider this

  314. first point? Well, a weak creature,

  315. yet one through whom God ordains prayers accomplishes

  316. his purposes,

  317. especially the purpose of making enemies

  318. into friends.

  319. And of course this is true of all

  320. of our prayer life, but I think it's

  321. especially true as we gather week by week

  322. in corporate

  323. worship.

  324. What do we do lord's day by lord's

  325. day? We remember and celebrate the resurrection.

  326. We proclaim the lord's victory over sin and

  327. death

  328. and evil.

  329. And something of that pours out from us,

  330. and though we don't

  331. see it through the ordinariness of what we're

  332. doing this morning, God uses our praises to

  333. do what? To build his church, to defeat

  334. foes,

  335. to

  336. win the victory, you might say.

  337. And it's kind of like, in sports, you'll

  338. know that, oftentimes, a team wins a championship

  339. and there's a victory

  340. parade.

  341. The Boston Celtics just won the NBA championship.

  342. I'm not really an NBA fan. It's just

  343. the most recent one I could find,

  344. example I could find. And what do they

  345. do? They go through the streets of Boston

  346. with the fans gathering, and and cheering, and

  347. adoring them because they just won the championship,

  348. remembering the great victory that they have won

  349. for their city.

  350. Now that's a pales in comparison to what

  351. we're doing here this morning,

  352. but it is a small picture that week

  353. by week as we come,

  354. remember the Lord's victory over sin and death.

  355. Remember the glorious resurrection

  356. of Christ. Ephesians chapter 3 says that we're

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  357. actually proclaiming to that heavenly host, to Satan

  358. himself, that Jesus wins.

  359. And as we do that, as ordinary as

  360. it sounds, as much as your kids might

  361. have not put their shoes on this morning,

  362. you're frustrated when you got in the car,

  363. God's using all of that to accomplish his

  364. his purposes.

  365. What is man? A weak vessel,

  366. but mighty when our faith is in the

  367. majestic

  368. name of God. And as we take those

  369. praises upon our lips and make his victory,

  370. the hope of the gospel

  371. known.

  372. So what is man?

  373. That's the first part, but we can go

  374. on from god's majestic name to the smallness

  375. of human beings.

  376. Excuse me. I'm not I'm deacclimated to the

  377. humidity.

  378. At one point in my life, I was

  379. acclimated, but no longer.

  380. So let's go on and and continue answering

  381. this question, the smallness of human beings, verse

  382. 3.

  383. Fills out our answer just a little bit

  384. more. Now as as we look there, what's

  385. going on? When I look at the heavens

  386. or really, I think the best way to

  387. take that is when I contemplate, when I

  388. consider

  389. the heavens.

  390. We get the idea that David, perhaps wrote

  391. this Psalm

  392. on a clear night as he set up

  393. perhaps on a rock looking up at the

  394. sky.

  395. The end of verse 2 has already told

  396. us that God has set his glory above

  397. the heavens. It's on display

  398. in his creation.

  399. And so David looks up or he contemplates,

  400. he considers as he looks at the moon

  401. and and the stars, all the works of

  402. God's fingers

  403. as verse 3 describes it.

  404. And he he knows that to see God's

  405. work on displaying creation is to reflect upon

  406. God to make him think about just how

  407. big and how great, how powerful

  408. God is. And he asked verse 4 this

  409. all important question, our guiding question this morning.

  410. What is man that you are mindful of

  411. him?

  412. The universe is vast.

  413. The night sky when it's clear is filled

  414. with

  415. stars.

  416. David is recognizing just how small he is,

  417. but also recognizing in the midst of enemies

  418. that this is Yahweh our Lord, he's taking

  419. care of us. Lord, why? Why are you

  420. mindful of us? We're small and insignificant compared

  421. to you in this vast creation, yet you

  422. care for us

  423. greatly.

  424. And so he asked this question, what is

  425. man? Thinking of humanity generally speaking.

  426. And then what is the son of man?

  427. A reference that not only do you care

  428. for mankind, you care for me.

  429. You care for individuals.

  430. You care about the people

  431. that you have

  432. made. But he's overwhelmed as he looks at

  433. the vastness of the night

  434. sky. Well, Juan Carlos, mentioned that our family

  435. lived for a time in New Zealand.

  436. And most of New Zealand is quite rural,

  437. and there's dark zones in certain areas of

  438. New Zealand

  439. where you're not allowed to actually build lights

  440. and what and whatnot, and people come from

  441. all over the world to do what David

  442. is doing, to look at the stars.

  443. And even in our small town that wasn't

  444. in a dark zone, the night sky compared

  445. to Houston is just full of stars.

  446. But there's a place that we used to

  447. go to called Lake Tekapo that was a

  448. dark zone, and you would just look up

  449. and even on a cloudy night, you're just

  450. amazed for the things that you can see

  451. in the sky. And you're overwhelmed, and you

  452. and you have a feeling, some of you

  453. will know this feeling in a night when

  454. you see a starry sky, or you see

  455. a grand mountain, or something like that. And

  456. those moments where you just say, oh God,

  457. I'm small compared to what's on display here.

  458. Your world is so big, you are so

  459. big and you're just overwhelmed.

  460. And it's no surprise that David has that

  461. feeling. It's no surprise that many of us,

  462. or I think all of us at times

  463. have that feeling because created in the image

  464. of God we're supposed to look at his

  465. world where he makes himself known in part,

  466. and cry out with the psalmist, what is

  467. man that you are mindful of him.

  468. So one of the perennial questions

  469. throughout history is this very question, what are

  470. we? Who are we? Why are we here?

  471. Alister McGrath says, few questions have so intrigued

  472. humanity

  473. as that of the meaning of the universe

  474. and our place in it.

  475. The sight of the star studded night can

  476. make us feel quite

  477. overwhelmed.

  478. And as you think about the the beauty

  479. on display in the sky and how big

  480. it is, just consider,

  481. the spacecraft Voyager. I know that's going back

  482. a bit now, but it took Voyager 26

  483. years

  484. and 8,400,000,000

  485. miles to leave our solar system.

  486. And it would have to travel for another

  487. 40000

  488. years

  489. before it reached another star. That's

  490. quite big.

  491. So the universe is huge, but each detail

  492. was put in place by the finger of

  493. God.

  494. And as big as the universe is compared

  495. to God, it's tiny.

  496. And we're tiny compared to the universe

  497. in

  498. God.

  499. Okay. So what's the point of this section?

  500. Well, the point is not to say you're

  501. worthless or you're insignificant.

  502. The next point will make that abundantly clear.

  503. But it is to say this,

  504. only God is infinite.

  505. We are finite creatures.

  506. Even apart from the fall, we were not

  507. created to be God.

  508. We have limits,

  509. and that's not always a bad thing. And

  510. I'll I'll stop there. I'll go on forever.

  511. But, I mean, just for instance, I was

  512. never gonna play in the NBA.

  513. You can laugh. It's okay. It's a joke.

  514. We have our limits. We're finite.

  515. But so much,

  516. gets out of whack, and what's playing out

  517. in our culture is the tower of babble

  518. all over again. What happens is we think

  519. that we're the creator instead of the created

  520. creature.

  521. And so the point about the vast of

  522. the universe and the smallness of man is

  523. not to say that you're awful or worthless,

  524. but it is to say, God is the

  525. creator,

  526. you are the creature.

  527. And that's actually good news.

  528. That's a good thing.

  529. Because what it says is as the creator,

  530. he names us.

  531. He tells us who we are. He helps

  532. us answer this all important question,

  533. what is

  534. man?

  535. Okay. So God's majestic name, the smallness of

  536. men, but now the glory of man.

  537. Verses 5 through 8.

  538. We are finite. Yes. Only God is infinite.

  539. But we're glorious creatures created in his image.

  540. You see there in verse 5. You've made

  541. him a little lower than the heavenly being

  542. or the angels and crowned him with glory

  543. and honor.

  544. And these verses here echo the creation account

  545. in Genesis chapter 1 as the days of

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  546. creation unfold, and we get to the pinnacle

  547. of creation day 6, and God creates man

  548. and woman in his own image as the

  549. pinnacle of creation. Not just as the highest

  550. evolved

  551. animal,

  552. but as humans

  553. alone in the image

  554. of God.

  555. And then he gives them a job to

  556. do. Sometimes we call this the cultural mandate

  557. to have dominion

  558. over the earth, not to dominate the earth,

  559. but to care for the earth, to rule

  560. the world as my representatives

  561. in the ways that I ask you to.

  562. That spread the love and goodness and glory

  563. of God. And and that's a kingly calling

  564. in the ancient context.

  565. So what is man? Well, we're creating the

  566. image of God with this kingly

  567. calling.

  568. And we read this in Genesis 126.

  569. Let us make man in our image, after

  570. our likeness,

  571. and let them have dominion over the fish

  572. of the sea and the birds of the

  573. heavens

  574. and over the livestock and over all the

  575. earth and over every creeping thing that creeps

  576. on

  577. earth.

  578. Now stick with me just for a minute

  579. because what we have here is is a

  580. is 2 parts in Genesis 126

  581. that's really important to help us answer the

  582. question,

  583. what is man?

  584. In theology and philosophy, sometimes there's a distinction

  585. that we don't have to make today, and

  586. it's a distinction between this.

  587. What is man

  588. and who is man

  589. are not the same question.

  590. So what is man is asking, what is

  591. the nature? What is the reality of this

  592. thing called a human being?

  593. And who is man

  594. begins to fill in, what are we to

  595. do? How are we

  596. to live? And we find this actually in

  597. the cultural mandate. Notice the first phrase, before

  598. we're told of our royal task, we're told

  599. of our nature

  600. that we're made in the image of God,

  601. and after his likeness. That's what you are,

  602. most basically, that's what you are as a

  603. human being. A creature

  604. created

  605. in the image

  606. of God,

  607. the pinnacle

  608. of God's

  609. creation.

  610. And then that who question, the cultural mandate

  611. goes on to say that you are God's

  612. representative

  613. with a task

  614. to subdue the earth. How so? Through all

  615. the various callings God has placed upon your

  616. life,

  617. through work, through being a parent, through being

  618. a faithful church member. By pursuing those callings

  619. in a way that honors the Lord, that

  620. lines up with scripture, that promotes the love

  621. and goodness of God, and the goodness and

  622. love of of one another, we begin to

  623. fulfill that

  624. task.

  625. We'll come back to the what question, but

  626. consider the the coronation, I don't know if

  627. you watched King Charles' coronation, or have seen

  628. videos of it in the past.

  629. There's a moment near the end where they

  630. put the crown on the head of the

  631. king or the queen.

  632. And back when Queen Elizabeth

  633. the second was,

  634. coronated,

  635. CS Lewis remarked this,

  636. the pressing of that huge heavy crown on

  637. that small young head

  638. is a symbol of the situation of man.

  639. God has called humanity to be his vice

  640. regent on earth.

  641. CS Lewis knows that the honor

  642. that God has placed upon humanity in this

  643. royal task to what we are called.

  644. So who are we? Remember our what and

  645. who distinction. Who are we? We'll revise regions

  646. with a royal calling.

  647. But now let's go back and think a

  648. little bit about that question, what is

  649. man? I wanna do that from using

  650. by using the idea of identity, which is

  651. all over age these days.

  652. And this is so important because that question,

  653. what is man? It's right here in Psalm

  654. 8, but on our theological and philosophical reflection,

  655. what we've really done is we've erased that

  656. question.

  657. We haven't first thought about the nature of

  658. what it means to be human, we've jumped

  659. straight to the who question,

  660. which is one reason identity

  661. is all

  662. of the rage.

  663. Alright. Now I'm not convinced the question is

  664. a totally bad question, it's been asked our

  665. history in some ways, but as we find

  666. it now, it is a quite

  667. modern

  668. question.

  669. And if I can even say this especially

  670. to the young people this morning,

  671. it's actually a first world question.

  672. And why do I say that? We live

  673. in a very safe world. Maybe it doesn't

  674. feel so safe this morning after what happened

  675. yesterday, but by and large, we don't have

  676. tanks outside in the street.

  677. We live in a very safe place,

  678. historically speaking.

  679. Most of us in the room this morning

  680. have plenty of food in the pantry when

  681. we go home at night.

  682. We might complain about inflation, but we're not

  683. poor.

  684. What does that mean? We have time to

  685. sit around and think about identity.

  686. When there's tanks in the streets, and you're

  687. working day to day just to feed your

  688. family, you don't have time to sit down

  689. and ask this question.

  690. You're just worried about making it through the

  691. day. So I think we need to recognize

  692. that the affluence of our postmodern Western world

  693. has created a situation

  694. where identity can be the dominating question that

  695. it is, and when it wasn't even 25

  696. years ago.

  697. Alright.

  698. And what what happens is our culture says,

  699. remember we're asking this question right in the

  700. middle of the song bookend by God's name.

  701. So what happens when we go straight to

  702. the question and we don't let it bookend

  703. with God's name? We jump straight to the

  704. who, or we just remove God out of

  705. it. What happens was our culture tells us

  706. that you find your identity not by looking

  707. to God, and not by looking outside of

  708. yourself, not by embracing the royal calling that

  709. he's given you, but by looking within.

  710. Now, if you're over about the age of

  711. 35 or 40,

  712. you might look within and think you're going

  713. to find that identity by work,

  714. or pleasure,

  715. or your bank account.

  716. If you're younger,

  717. now what you're being told is not to

  718. chase it through these cultural idols, but to

  719. look inside your heart and express any and

  720. every desire that you might have.

  721. What does it mean to be a human

  722. being?

  723. To be true to your own

  724. desires.

  725. That's what the world tells us today. But

  726. the Bible says the heart is deceitful

  727. and wicked above all things, if it hasn't

  728. been made new by the grace

  729. of God.

  730. And if you think about for all the

  731. emphasis on identity

  732. that our culture presses upon us today,

  733. mental health is horrible.

  734. Social media is killing our young people. Because

  735. why? It's an effort of self creation. It's

  736. an attempt to make ourselves, but remember we're

  737. not created.

  738. We are created, we're not meant to be

  739. the creator.

  740. And so for all the emphasis on on

  741. culture, I'm convinced

  742. that our our world doesn't give us an

  743. identity that really proves meaningful.

  744. It's because when you take God out of

  745. the equation,

  746. you're really just a cosmic accident.

  747. And then you're full of angst and anxiety

  748. trying

  749. to create an image for yourself, trying to

  750. convince yourself and everyone else who's watching on

  751. Instagram and TikTok,

  752. or sometimes even at church

  753. that you're really doing okay.

  754. When the scripture says, no, look

  755. to God. What is man? You're glorious. You're

  756. crowned with glory and honor but you only

  757. find that glory and honor as you relate

  758. rightly to God and live in the safety

  759. and security

  760. of his

  761. majestic

  762. name.

  763. Well, finally, we come to verse 9.

  764. And in some ways, I've I've already said

  765. this, but in some ways we have this

  766. idealistic picture,

  767. but we already have hints in Psalm 8

  768. that the world is fallen. There's enemies all

  769. around.

  770. We know that this Psalm was written after

  771. Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  772. We know in our own hearts that all

  773. is not

  774. well.

  775. We are glorious creatures, we're still in the

  776. image of God, but

  777. sin that was let loose in the garden

  778. frustrates God's created

  779. purposes. It frustrates our calling. It frustrates how

  780. we even answer that question, what is man?

  781. See at the end of the day, for

  782. all the other answers we could give, it's

  783. sin that leads us to seek an identity

  784. apart

  785. from God.

  786. But it's right here that the gospel gives

  787. us great

  788. hope.

  789. God's created purposes is frustrated by sin, but

  790. it's restored in Christ, and we know that

  791. because in Hebrews chapter 2 verse 5,

    Hebrews 2:5

  792. Psalm 8 is quoted and applied to the

  793. incarnate Lord Jesus Christ.

  794. And what we're supposed to see by that

  795. is that really Psalm 8 is about the

  796. Lord Jesus Christ before it is about us,

  797. that he is the truly human one.

  798. The eternal Son of God who in the

  799. fullness of time took on flesh and was

  800. a true human being, lived a true human

  801. life, experienced the things that we experience

  802. living in a fallen world, except

  803. one huge difference.

  804. He never gave in to the temptation

  805. of sin.

  806. And because of that, he has defeated

  807. death,

  808. sin. He has defeated the enemies

  809. of God.

  810. See Psalm 8 prophetically looks forward to that

  811. great day when the Lord Jesus

  812. Christ will return.

  813. Because even now not all things are in

  814. subjection to him as we read in

  815. Hebrews chapter 2. So it looks forward to

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  816. the first coming and the second coming of

  817. Christ, the one who's truly human, who invites

  818. us by faith into his life, death, and

  819. resurrection to live in that

  820. glorious

  821. name. See what is man? The answer really

  822. is Jesus Christ.

  823. And we can say that because Philippians 2

  824. says that the Lord has, that God the

  825. father has given him the name that is

  826. above every name.

  827. And that his name everyday one knee will

  828. bow and every tongue confess

  829. that Jesus

  830. is

  831. Lord.

  832. And see it's when we come to Christ

  833. in faith, repenting of our sins, looking to

  834. him for identity, meaning, purpose, for making a

  835. name, whatever

  836. phrase we wanna use to fill it in.

  837. That's when we find that we begin to

  838. truly live as we are created.

  839. And if God is the creator, and we

  840. are his created image bearers,

  841. then even when it doesn't feel right living

  842. in the ways that he asked us to,

  843. we have to trust

  844. and know that that's what's right and that

  845. is what is good

  846. for us.

  847. And this has led theologians throughout Christian tradition

  848. to say things like this, Saint Irenaeus,

  849. the glory of God is man fully alive.

  850. And the reformed theologian,

  851. Amandas Paulinus,

  852. the glory of man

  853. is the living

  854. God.

  855. See we are glorious creatures,

  856. that we only find that true lasting saving

  857. glory

  858. in the majestic name of God revealed in

  859. Jesus

  860. Christ.

  861. And today Psalm 8 is quite simply calling

  862. us by faith back to him.

  863. What is man? Come to the Lord Jesus

  864. Christ and he will show you. A weak

  865. clay jar, but yet God will use your

  866. prayers to accomplish his purposes.

  867. Small

  868. compared to God, because you're not the creator,

  869. but that's good news, because the creator has

  870. made you glorious,

  871. and even though we've walked away and frustrated

  872. his purposes and sin, by his grace he

  873. comes to us in the person of Christ,

  874. the truly human one, who through his life,

  875. death, and resurrection

  876. invites us back into that majestic

  877. name of God.

  878. What is man?

  879. That's the answer.

  880. Proverbs 18,

  881. and we'll close with this, calls us to

  882. Christ with these beautiful words.

  883. The name of the Lord is a strong

  884. tower.

  885. The righteous man runs into it

  886. and is safe.

  887. In the name of the father,

  888. son, and holy spirit.

  889. Amen.
