  1. Remain standing now for the reading of God's

  2. word. We're in Paul's letter to the Romans

  3. in chapter 9,

  4. and we're looking at

  5. verses

  6. 6 to 9 this morning. Again, Romans 9

    Romans 9:6–9

  7. verses 6 to 9. Please

  8. listen to the reading of God's word.

  9. But it is not as though the word

  10. of God has failed.

  11. For not all who are descended from Israel

  12. belong to Israel,

  13. and not all are children of Abraham

  14. because they are his offspring,

  15. but through Isaac

  16. shall your offspring be named.

  17. This means that it is not the children

  18. of the flesh

  19. who are the children of God,

  20. but the children of the promise are counted

  21. as offspring.

  22. For this is what the promise said,

  23. about this time next year,

  24. I will return

  25. and Sarah shall have a son. This is

  26. the word of the lord.

  27. Thanks be to god. Please be seated.

  28. Imagine the scene from Genesis 22.

  29. Abraham,

  30. having received

  31. the unimaginable

  32. command from God,

  33. prepares to sacrifice his beloved son,

  34. Isaac,

  35. the very child

  36. that God had promised him and Sarah.

  37. During the 3 days journey to Mount Moriah,

  38. the place that God had selected

  39. for this terrible test,

  40. one can scarcely dare to imagine

  41. the anguish

  42. in Abraham's mind,

  43. the anguish

  44. in Abraham's

  45. heart

  46. as he looked

  47. at Isaac,

  48. as he looked at his beloved son walking

  49. next to him on this 3 days journey.

  50. Isaac's

  51. life appeared to hang in the balance as

  52. they were ascending to the peak of Mount

  53. Moriah.

  54. On the way up, Isaac who's carrying the

  55. wood for the sacrifice

  56. asked his father

  57. where the lamb is for the sacrifice that

  58. they are to perform.

  59. Every word of that question must have pierced

  60. Abraham's heart, yet his answer to Isaac

  61. revealed an unwavering

  62. trust

  63. in God's promise as he tells the boy,

  64. God himself

  65. will provide the lamb,

  66. my son.

  67. Once they reach the summit

  68. with no lamb

  69. for the sacrifice in sight,

  70. Abraham builds an altar and then he proceeds

  71. to bind his son

  72. upon it.

  73. With Isaac now aware of what is going

  74. on and with tears of sorrow undoubtedly

  75. flowing

  76. liberally

  77. from Abraham's eyes, the patriarch lifts his knife

  78. trusting

  79. his whole

  80. heart

  81. to God.

  82. Yet as dramatic as the scene was,

  83. Isaac's life was never truly

  84. in danger.

  85. Why?

  86. Because Isaac was the child of promise,

  87. the son through whom God's covenant to Abraham

  88. would be fulfilled.

  89. And Abraham knew

  90. what you should know,

  91. that God's promise

  92. never

  93. fails.

  94. The story that is known as the binding

  95. of Isaac is a powerful example of God's

  96. faithfulness.

  97. Even in what appeared to be the most

  98. hopeless of circumstances,

  99. God's promise to Abraham

  100. was never at risk.

  101. Even before he was conceived,

  102. Isaac had been chosen by God

  103. to carry the promise forward

  104. and God's promise

  105. is unbreakable.

  106. In much the same way,

  107. when we come to Romans chapter 9 verses

    Romans 9:6–9

  108. 6 to 9, Paul assures us

  109. that God's word to his people has not

  110. failed.

  111. In fact, the main point that I have

  112. for you this morning is this,

  113. God's promise

  114. always prevails.

  115. God's promise always prevails

  116. despite significant

  117. obstacles

  118. brought about through human rebellion

  119. or through human rejection of God,

  120. God's love for his people

  121. and his commitment to his word

  122. remains

  123. steadfast.

  124. Many Christians today

  125. have been taught that the church is some

  126. kind of plan b

  127. for God's purposes.

  128. That because his first

  129. plan failed,

  130. God had to come up with a different

  131. way.

  132. Our text this morning

  133. demonstrates that this is not so.

  134. Rather, what we are going to see is

  135. that the church is nothing less

  136. than the natural outworking of God's promise to

  137. Abraham.

  138. So let's explore this fact,

  139. this fact that God's promise

  140. always prevails

  141. under 3 headings.

  142. 1st,

  143. God's sovereign word.

  144. 2nd,

  145. God's sovereign will.

  146. And third, God's sovereign work. God's sovereign word,

  147. how God's promises are infallible

  148. and certain.

  149. God's sovereign will,

  150. how God's election and choice

  151. establishes people, not by human descent,

  152. but by his divine purpose.

  153. And 3rd, God's sovereign work, how God's power

  154. ensures that his promise is fulfilled

  155. according to his purpose.

  156. So let's look at the first

  157. heading,

  158. God's sovereign word.

  159. In verse 6 we read again,

  160. but it is not as though the word

  161. of God has failed

  162. for not all who are descended from Israel

  163. belong to Israel.

  164. Last week, I said that Paul's assertions in

  165. Romans chapter 8 regarding God's sovereignty

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  166. in salvation

  167. raised an important question.

  168. The question is this,

  169. why are so many descendants of Abraham

  170. not saved?

  171. In other words,

  172. did God's promise to Israel fail?

  173. In Romans 9 to 11,

  174. Paul sets to answer this very question.

  175. In the first five verses of Romans 9,

  176. which we looked at last week,

  177. Paul begins to answer this question by showing

  178. that the only way to God

  179. is through Jesus Christ,

  180. who is God overall.

  181. Whether you are Jew or Greek,

  182. from all eternity,

  183. God's plan to redeem his his people,

  184. a plan to redeem a people for himself,

  185. was focused on the person and work

  186. of Jesus Christ.

  187. This Jesus

  188. was the Son of God incarnate,

  189. the eternally preexisting

  190. God

  191. who was from Abraham

  192. according to the flesh. Paul tells us that.

  193. From Abraham according

  194. to the flesh. Already,

  195. Paul was intimating that salvation through Christ

  196. had been the plan

  197. and therefore the promise all along.

  198. In other words,

  199. in every case,

  200. salvation depends on God's promise, a promise

  201. that never fails

  202. but always prevails.

  203. Therefore, Paul will argue

  204. that the rejection of the Messiah

  205. by so many Jews

  206. was not an unexpected

  207. wrinkle

  208. in God's promise,

  209. but was

  210. in full accord

  211. with God's

  212. purpose,

  213. in full accord

  214. with God's promise, in full accord with God's

  215. word.

  216. That's why Paul begins by stating that it

  217. is not as

  218. though God's word

  219. has failed.

  220. Such a thing ought to be unthinkable

  221. since it is outright impossible.

  222. This is known as the infallibility

  223. of God's word.

  224. Paul can affirm that God's word has not

  225. failed

  226. because God's word

  227. cannot

  228. fail.

  229. Now,

  230. spouses

  231. sometimes

  232. fail to keep their promises.

  233. Parents

  234. sometimes

  235. fail to keep their promises.

  236. Politicians

  237. some no. Politicians usually

  238. fail to keep their promises,

  239. even those who govern well.

  240. That's why the 9th commandment exists.

  241. God forbids lying not because we don't struggle

  242. with lying, but because we do struggle with

  243. lying.

  244. All sorts of things get in our way.

  245. But as numbers

  246. 23/19

  247. states,

  248. God is not a man

  249. that he should lie or a son of

  250. man that he should change his mind.

  251. Has he said

  252. and will he not do it?

  253. Or has he spoken

  254. and will he not fulfill it?

  255. God does not lie.

  256. He does what he says he will do.

  257. He fulfills

  258. his promise.

  259. This makes sense

  260. since Paul writes in 2nd Timothy 3 16

  261. that all scripture is

  262. breathed out by God.

  263. This is known as the inspiration

  264. of scripture. Meaning that scripture is God's word,

  265. that he is

  266. the author of of of scripture, that he

  267. is the source

  268. of scripture. It comes from him.

  269. God really does use

  270. the wisdom and insights of human authors for

  271. scripture that nobody denies that.

  272. Moses really did right. David really did right.

  273. The prophets wrote. The apostles wrote.

  274. But they are all led

  275. by the Holy Spirit working in and through

  276. them to write God's word.

  277. This is what Peter means in 2nd Peter

  278. chapter 1 verse 21,

  279. where he writes that no prophecy was ever

  280. produced by the will of man,

  281. but men spoke from God as they were

  282. carried along

  283. by the Holy Spirit.

  284. That word translated carried along

  285. does not refer to God's

  286. gentle wooing of them.

  287. He's not putting on the charm, so to

  288. speak,

  289. and inviting them to agree with him, to

  290. write what he would like them to write,

  291. persuading them to write his will on God's

  292. word.

  293. Rather,

  294. the force of the verb to carry

  295. is to bring or even to drive along

  296. as the ESV renders that very same verb

  297. in acts 2715,

  298. where a terrible storm in the Mediterranean

  299. sea

  300. shipwrecks

  301. Paul, almost causing him and all others on

  302. the ship to perish

  303. after the ship is driven along

  304. by the unstoppable

  305. power of the violent winds.

  306. The Bible

  307. is very much God's word. It is inspired

  308. by him and it bears his authority.

  309. Therefore, it is infallible.

  310. It cannot fail

  311. because God cannot fail.

  312. And in the context of Romans 9, this

  313. fact

  314. ought to give you confidence regarding 2 things.

  315. 1st,

  316. if God wills to save you,

  317. if God wills to save

  318. your family member

  319. that you've been praying for,

  320. if God wills to save your friend that's

  321. been in your heart or your neighbor,

  322. there is no power in heaven

  323. or on earth or under the earth that

  324. will be able to thwart God's saving grace.

  325. In Acts 13,

  326. Paul and Barnabas preached the gospel to Gentiles

  327. in Antioch and Pisidia.

  328. And after the Gentiles hear the preaching of

  329. God's word, in Acts 1348,

  330. we read that the Gentiles began

  331. rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord,

  332. and as many as were appointed

  333. to eternal life

  334. believed.

  335. Why?

  336. Because God's word does not fail.

  337. This ought to bring you great comfort regarding

  338. regarding your assurance of salvation,

  339. but also this ought to bring you great

  340. hope

  341. regarding God's power to save

  342. even the hardest of sinners.

  343. So keep praying for them.

  344. 2nd,

  345. the reality of God's sovereign word ought to

  346. put to rest any notion

  347. that people will be unjustly condemned

  348. on the last day.

  349. Paul is addressing the objection

  350. that the condemnation of the Jews was unjust

  351. because they were the children of Abraham.

  352. And had not God promised

  353. that Israel would be saved?

  354. Yet Paul is affirming

  355. that redemptive history is unfolding in complete accordance

  356. with God's promise.

  357. This is why he states in the second

  358. half of verse 6

  359. that not all who are descend descended from

  360. Israel

  361. belong

  362. to Israel.

  363. In other words,

  364. Paul is going to show

  365. that the objection

  366. does not highlight the failure of God's word.

  367. Instead, it highlights a misunderstanding

  368. of the promise

  369. grounded on a wrong definition

  370. of who

  371. constitutes

  372. Israel.

  373. And this brings us to our second heading,

  374. God's sovereign will.

  375. Let's look again at verse 6.

  376. But it is not as though the word

  377. of God has failed,

  378. for not all who are descendant from Israel

  379. belong to Israel.

  380. Notice that Paul makes a distinction

  381. between those who are

  382. descendant from Israel

  383. and those who

  384. belong to Israel.

  385. It's 2 different groups.

  386. The former clearly refers to

  387. physical

  388. or biological descent.

  389. They are ethnic Israel

  390. being

  391. from Israel

  392. by blood.

  393. The latter on the other hand

  394. belong to Israel,

  395. but not physically,

  396. not necessarily physically.

  397. Therefore,

  398. though not explicitly stated yet,

  399. there must be a spiritual

  400. or divine quality that causes this group

  401. to belong to Israel

  402. or to be reckoned

  403. as belonging to Israel, as a part of

  404. Israel, to be considered

  405. as part of Israel.

  406. Verse 7 begins to clarify what this distinguishing

  407. feature is.

  408. Again, we read in verse 7,

  409. and not all are children of Abraham because

  410. they are his offspring,

  411. but through Isaac

  412. shall your offspring be named.

  413. Or more literally,

  414. as the new King James version translates it,

  415. In Isaac,

  416. your seed shall be called.

  417. In Isaac, your seed shall be called. That's

  418. how it's in the Greek literally.

  419. Paul emphasizes God's sovereign will

  420. in divinely calling

  421. or even appointing

  422. those whom he chooses to be Israel.

  423. He designates Israel by his call.

  424. In verse 6, therefore, we learned that biology

  425. does not determine Israel.

  426. And in verse 7, the same idea

  427. is restated,

  428. but with a different focus. As Paul writes

  429. that neither does biology determine

  430. Abraham's seed.

  431. What defines Israel?

  432. The key feature that determines membership in God's

  433. covenant people.

  434. The determinant factor

  435. that makes up the offspring of Abraham

  436. that is to say the children of promise

  437. is the divine

  438. call

  439. of God.

  440. Through Isaac

  441. shall your offspring be named.

  442. In Isaac, your seed shall be called,

  443. says the Lord.

  444. God's covenant people

  445. are constituted

  446. by God's

  447. sovereign will.

  448. It's always been the case, Paul is saying.

  449. You may recall that God had promised Abraham

  450. and Isaac in their old age when Sarah

  451. was well beyond

  452. the age of childbearing,

  453. that he would give them a son

  454. and would make Abraham

  455. the father of many nations through this son.

  456. But as God delayed in fulfilling this promise,

  457. and Abraham and Sarah were not getting any

  458. younger,

  459. they doubted him.

  460. So Sarah gave her servant Hagar to Abraham,

  461. that Abraham might become a father through

  462. Hagar.

  463. Hagar did indeed give Abraham a son

  464. and he was given the name Ishmael.

  465. God then rebuked Abraham and Sarah for their

  466. unbelief,

  467. and yet he graciously

  468. reiterated his promise to give Abraham a son

  469. through Sarah.

  470. The name of that child, of course, is

  471. Isaac.

  472. Now physically,

  473. biologically,

  474. genetically,

  475. Ishmael was just as much Abraham's son

  476. as Isaac was.

  477. And legally,

  478. Ishmael had an even greater claim to Abraham's

  479. inheritance

  480. as the patriarch's

  481. firstborn

  482. son.

  483. But God's sovereign will determined that Isaac

  484. and not Ishmael

  485. was the child of promise.

  486. Some people are uncomfortable

  487. with the personal nature of God's choice in

  488. electing

  489. some individuals

  490. and not others.

  491. They posit that in Romans 9, Paul is

  492. not writing

  493. about God choosing individuals,

  494. but about God choosing to favor nations.

  495. But the context does not permit

  496. this interpretation.

  497. God calls those whom he chooses

  498. by name.

  499. Through Isaac,

  500. shall your offspring be named.

  501. Not only this,

  502. but at the moment of God's sovereign choice,

  503. Ishmael and Isaac are not different nations.

  504. Physically, they are equally

  505. Abraham's seed.

  506. So far as

  507. so far so far are they

  508. from being different nations

  509. at the moment of

  510. choice, that they are even members of the

  511. very same household.

  512. Yet, Ishmael's status is firstborn notwithstanding,

  513. we learned that God's sovereign will

  514. is the sole determinant

  515. in how God freely distributes his favor,

  516. choosing Isaac as he wills

  517. and not

  518. Ishmael

  519. as he wills.

  520. Is it not encouraging, dear Christian, to know

  521. that God's sovereign choice in electing you

  522. as the object of his love

  523. is neither generic

  524. nor impersonal,

  525. but specific

  526. and intimate.

  527. He chooses you

  528. because he loves you.

  529. So God's promise to bless Abraham's offspring

  530. is carried out in accordance

  531. with God's sovereign will.

  532. And in verse 8, Paul explains the practical

  533. implications for the church,

  534. writing,

  535. this means that it is not

  536. the children of the flesh who are the

  537. children of God,

  538. but the children of the promise are counted

  539. as offspring.

  540. There are a couple of things I want

  541. you to note.

  542. 1st,

  543. there is no fleshly

  544. or even worldly quality

  545. that automatically makes someone a child of God.

  546. Paul, who is an Israelite,

  547. a descendant of Abraham,

  548. a member of the tribe of Benjamin as

  549. Paul himself tells us in Romans 11,

  550. here makes it clear that his Jewishness

  551. does not make him or any other Jew

  552. for that matter,

  553. a child of God.

  554. Remember that

  555. Jews were complaining about Paul's teaching

  556. that if they rejected Jesus,

  557. they would in turn be rejected by God,

  558. saying that such teaching by Paul

  559. made God's promise

  560. to Abraham

  561. null and void.

  562. But Paul answers by saying that

  563. Jewishness

  564. is not what made Israel

  565. Israel.

  566. Just because one is a child of the

  567. flesh,

  568. he says,

  569. that does not make one a child of

  570. God.

  571. Paul demonstrates that it never has.

  572. Even Ishmael

  573. was a child of the flesh,

  574. but he was not a child

  575. of God,

  576. not in a covenantal sense.

  577. Isaac

  578. was chosen by God and that is what

  579. gave him the special status as a child

  580. of promise.

  581. And if it was God's call

  582. that made one

  583. that made one fleshly son of Abraham

  584. and

  585. not another

  586. a child of promise,

  587. so too it is God's call that can

  588. make one Jew

  589. a child of promise like Paul

  590. and not another

  591. like Judas,

  592. for example.

  593. In other words,

  594. the rejection of the Messiah by many Jews

  595. did not mean

  596. that God's word

  597. had failed.

  598. Rather, it meant that those fleshly descendants of

  599. Abraham

  600. were no different

  601. than the very first fleshly descendant of Abraham,

  602. Ishmael.

  603. A child of Abraham to be sure,

  604. but not a child of promise according to

  605. God's will, and therefore,

  606. not a child of God.

  607. The second thing I want you to note

  608. from Romans 9:8

    Romans 9:8

  609. is that Paul says that the children of

  610. promise are counted

  611. as offspring.

  612. The word counted

  613. is the same word that Paul employs in

  614. Romans 43

  615. where he quotes

  616. Genesis 15

    Genesis 15:6

  617. verse 6 saying,

  618. Abraham believed God and it was

  619. counted to him

  620. as righteousness.

  621. Paul's point regarding Abraham

  622. is the same point he is making here.

  623. That Abraham's right standing with God

  624. was not due to his own

  625. inherent

  626. righteousness.

  627. It wasn't an inherent righteousness in Abraham

  628. that made him righteous with God.

  629. Instead, Abraham's belief in God's promise, that is

  630. to say, his faith

  631. was counted

  632. or credited or considered

  633. to him as righteousness.

  634. In other words,

  635. Abraham's righteousness before God

  636. was not an inherent righteousness,

  637. internal

  638. righteousness.

  639. It was an imputed

  640. righteousness.

  641. Abraham's right standing with God

  642. did not depend or rely upon a fleshly

  643. internal quality of his,

  644. on some intrinsic

  645. material reality about his purity that made him

  646. automatically

  647. righteous.

  648. Abraham was

  649. graciously

  650. declared

  651. righteousness

  652. or righteous.

  653. Abraham's favored status

  654. did not rest on his pedigree,

  655. but on God's purpose.

  656. Abraham's blessed condition

  657. did not rest on his work,

  658. but on God's will.

  659. And so it is with Abraham's true seed.

  660. They were never defined by pedigree nor performance,

  661. but by God's promise.

  662. That is how Paul puts it in Galatians

  663. 3.

  664. If we look at Galatians 3 verses 7

    Galatians 3:7–9

  665. to 9, we read there,

  666. know then that it is those of faith

  667. who are the sons of Abraham,

  668. And the scripture foreseeing that God would justify

  669. the Gentiles by faith,

  670. preach the gospel beforehand to Abraham

  671. saying, in you shall all the nations be

  672. blessed.

  673. So

  674. then, those who are of faith

  675. are blessed along with Abraham,

  676. the man

  677. of faith. Notice the emphasis there has nothing

  678. to do with genetics.

  679. Abraham is the man

  680. of faith.

  681. It has always been through their faith and

  682. not through their flesh

  683. that God's people have demonstrated

  684. that they are Abraham's offspring and therefore

  685. the children of promise.

  686. Let me ask you therefore,

  687. are you trusting

  688. in God's promise

  689. to bless his people?

  690. Or might you be putting

  691. your faith

  692. in a fleshly quality

  693. to sustain your favorable

  694. relationship with God?

  695. In Paul's days, some Jews would say,

  696. we don't have to repent.

  697. We have Abraham

  698. as our father.

  699. You might not be relying on your Jewishness,

  700. although some of you are in fact

  701. descendants of Abraham according to the flesh.

  702. But are you relying

  703. on your on the faith of your parents,

  704. for example,

  705. or on your church attendance,

  706. or on your participation

  707. in our bible studies,

  708. or on your faithful

  709. tithing to this church

  710. or on your good grades

  711. or on your politeness

  712. or on your performance at work?

  713. Do you look to those things to say,

  714. I'm a good person. God should receive me.

  715. God should see me as righteous because look

  716. what kind of person I am.

  717. All of these things are very good things.

  718. There are even significant blessings.

  719. There are significant blessings even

  720. as being

  721. ethnically

  722. of Israel

  723. was a significant blessing before the Messiah arrived.

  724. But according to Paul, none of these things

  725. make you a child of God.

  726. In other words, none of these things

  727. puts God in your debt.

  728. They may put you in God's debt

  729. being the recipient of all these blessings,

  730. but they don't put God in your debt.

  731. God does not have to save you because

  732. you're polite. God does not have to save

  733. you because you go to church.

  734. God does not have to save you because

  735. you

  736. get good grades.

  737. To rely on these things

  738. is to rely on the flesh.

  739. And Jesus says in John 663,

  740. it is the spirit who gives life,

  741. the flesh

  742. is no

  743. help at all.

  744. He's talking about

  745. eternal life. The flesh is of no

  746. help

  747. at all.

  748. If you are to be a child of

  749. promise, then you then your trust must be

  750. in God's promise.

  751. Your trust must be in God's word.

  752. Is that where your trust is? Be honest.

  753. What if your preferred candidate loses the election?

  754. I've heard that the world is supposed to

  755. end if that happens.

  756. Where would your trust be?

  757. What if prices continue to rise

  758. or we enter into a more

  759. severe economic downturn?

  760. Where would your trust be?

  761. What if you or a loved one

  762. receive an unwanted

  763. medical

  764. diagnosis?

  765. Where

  766. would your trust be?

  767. What if your marriage encountered a significant challenge?

  768. Where would your trust be?

  769. To finish Jesus' quote from John 663, it

  770. is the spirit who gives life,

  771. The flesh

  772. is no help at all.

  773. The words that I have spoken to you

  774. are spirit

  775. and life.

  776. Life and hope are found in God's sovereign

  777. word

  778. and there

  779. in God's word, in God's promise is where

  780. your trust

  781. must

  782. abide.

  783. Are you trusting in God's word or are

  784. you trusting in the flesh? Because the flesh

  785. is no help

  786. at all.

  787. Because God willed that salvation be found in

  788. Christ alone,

  789. to redeem his people, the word became flesh.

  790. Our flesh is of no help,

  791. but Christ is.

  792. He

  793. is spirit

  794. and he is life and he becomes flesh

  795. so that we can partake of him.

  796. God has sent his son.

  797. The promised offspring of Abraham,

  798. who would bless all the families of the

  799. earth has come in history.

  800. And in John chapter 1

    John 1:12

  801. verses 12 and 13, the Apostle tells us

  802. that when the incarnate word came

  803. to all who did receive him,

  804. who believed in his name,

  805. God gave the right to become

  806. children of God,

  807. who are born not of blood,

  808. nor of the will of the flesh,

  809. nor of the will of man,

  810. but of God.

  811. It is God's sovereign will that made them

  812. children of God.

  813. Are you

  814. a child of God?

  815. Where is your trust?

  816. Is it in yourself? Is it in your

  817. flesh?

  818. Or is it in God's promise?

  819. It must be in God's promise

  820. because God's promise

  821. always

  822. prevails.

  823. Having considered God's sovereign word and God's sovereign

  824. will, let's look at the final heading, God's

  825. sovereign work.

  826. In verse 9 we read, for this is

  827. what the promise said,

  828. about this time next year I will return

  829. and Sarah

  830. shall have a son.

  831. Paul is referencing Genesis 18 where the Lord

  832. visits Abraham and Sarah

  833. and reiterates his promise

  834. that Sarah should bear a son for Abraham

  835. within a year.

  836. Sarah who is well past childbearing age laughs

  837. in disbelief

  838. when she hears this promise,

  839. but God does not shy away from his

  840. promise.

  841. He confronts Sarah about her laughter,

  842. reassuring Abraham and Sarah that nothing is impossible

  843. for him

  844. even as he says, about this time next

  845. year, I will return and Sarah shall have

  846. a son.

  847. Of course, God fulfilled his promise because God's

  848. sovereign work is unstoppable.

  849. His promise always prevails.

  850. He is worthy of your trust for that

  851. reason. Abraham named his son of promise Isaac,

  852. whose name means laughter.

  853. So imagine

  854. Abraham's surprise,

  855. his shock, his horror.

  856. When in Genesis 22, god calls Abraham saying,

  857. take your son,

  858. your only son Isaac whom you love,

  859. and go to the land of Moriah and

  860. offer him there

  861. as a burnt offering on one of the

  862. mountains

  863. that I shall tell you.

  864. As I said at the beginning of the

  865. sermon, Abraham did take Isaac and bound him.

  866. And at the very moment when Abraham's darling,

  867. when his promised heir,

  868. when the hope of God's people is about

  869. to be sacrificed, the angel of the Lord,

  870. that is to say, God himself, cries out

  871. from heaven

  872. saying,

  873. Abraham Abraham,

  874. do not lay a hand on the boy.

  875. Do not do anything to him. Now I

  876. know

  877. that you fear God

  878. because you have not withheld from me your

  879. son, your only son.

  880. Though Abraham did not know it,

  881. God never intended

  882. for Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. God intended to

  883. taste it to test Abraham and Abraham, even

  884. though he's a sinner,

  885. passes the test.

  886. Because he knows

  887. that if necessary, God will raise his son

  888. from the dead

  889. in order to safeguard

  890. his own promise.

  891. After all, he has said that it was

  892. through Isaac that his offspring would be

  893. named. You see,

  894. God's power guarantees

  895. that his promise

  896. always

  897. prevails.

  898. On that day,

  899. God provided a ram whose horns were stuck

  900. in a thicket to be sacrificed in the

  901. place of Isaac.

  902. But all of this was just a type

  903. and shadow

  904. of the one true sacrifice that was to

  905. come.

  906. The sacrifice that would atone for the sins

  907. of the children of God.

  908. 21 centuries after Abraham sacrificed

  909. a ram in the place of Isaac,

  910. and 21 centuries ago,

  911. God provided a lamb

  912. to be offered in the place of many.

  913. Abraham's son, Isaac,

  914. had unknowingly

  915. carried the wood up the mountain

  916. that could have been

  917. the wood for his own sacrifice.

  918. God's son, Jesus,

  919. carried the wood up another mountain in Jerusalem

  920. for what he knew would be

  921. his own sacrifice.

  922. Abraham

  923. had offered his son all the time knowing

  924. that somehow

  925. Isaac was coming to come down that mountain

  926. alive because God keeps his word.

  927. God the father

  928. gave up his own son,

  929. his innocent

  930. son,

  931. his beloved Jesus knowing that he would unleash

  932. his wrath upon him on the cross

  933. because he always keeps his word.

  934. This time there would be no voice from

  935. heaven to stop the sacrifice. This time there

  936. would be no ram stuck in a thicket.

  937. The father and the son knew

  938. exactly what was going to happen at Calvary.

  939. The father knew that he was offering his

  940. son and the son knew that he was

  941. the lamb that must be offered.

  942. So Jesus really was pierced.

  943. He really was offered up on a cross.

  944. He was offered in the place of Abraham

  945. and in the place of Isaac and in

  946. the place of the children of promise.

  947. He took your place.

  948. The price

  949. for the sin of God's people was paid

  950. for by the blood of Jesus.

  951. It was a price that we should have

  952. paid, but a price that we could not

  953. pay.

  954. And just like Isaac's life was given back

  955. to him,

  956. when there seemed to be no hope,

  957. Jesus Christ resurrected because death could not hold

  958. him.

  959. Dear Christian,

  960. salvation is God's sovereign work.

  961. He calls his people out of darkness

  962. by his sovereign will.

  963. So trust in God's sovereign word, knowing that

  964. God's promise always prevails,

  965. though the trials

  966. of this world seem insurmountable.

  967. God's promise to sustain you will prevail.

  968. He promises it,

  969. and he always keeps his word.

  970. Let's pray.
