  1. good morning everybody it's uh nice to

  2. see you here please do um open up your

  3. Bibles at Luke chapter 17 be good to

    Luke 17 chapter mention

  4. have that um in front of you as we we go

  5. through

  6. this there's something

  7. about

  8. fire which can be quite exciting really

  9. if you're that way inclined it's quite

  10. intriguing quite exciting especially if

  11. your young young children often like to

  12. play with fire I'm not recommending you

  13. do that it's dangerous but there's

  14. something about fire that can be quite

  15. nice warming comforting picture the

  16. campfire you're sitting around there you

  17. know singing songs or whatever toasting

  18. marshmallows it's nice isn't it but yet

  19. we all know that fire can be dangerous

  20. too it can quickly get out of

  21. control and it's destru destructive

  22. and even if the Flames don't get you the

  23. smoke

  24. can and that's a bit like Sin Sin can

  25. look fun at

  26. first but actually it can be it is

  27. destructive and whereas you can have a

  28. controlled fire you can never have a

  29. controlled sin it's always growing it

  30. will always consume and ultimately it

  31. will kill

  32. last week we looked at the terrible

  33. consequences of living with no regard to

  34. God and His word the consequences of sin

  35. was Everlasting death so that rich man

  36. ended up in hell it was a place of

  37. Torment perhaps our trouble is we just

  38. don't see

  39. sin as bad as it

  40. is but God sees sin for what it is and

  41. sin always ends up in pain and so since

  42. Jesus loves

  43. us he warns us he warns us about Sin and

  44. In this passage he warns us not to lead

  45. other people into

  46. sin he warns us to rebuke our brother if

  47. they're in sin and he tells us that we

  48. need to forgive people for their sin so

  49. let's look at Jesus's first warning

  50. about leading others into

  51. sin I shared this story um possibly a

  52. number of times before but it's worth

  53. retelling so some years ago we were on

  54. our way to Holiday we were going to

  55. France uh before we left England I

  56. hurriedly programmed the SAT naav and as

  57. we um got off the uh ferry in France we

  58. just followed the satav assuming

  59. everything would be fine and all was

  60. well it was a blisteringly hot day

  61. unfortunately the air conditioning we

  62. just had mended failed and spewed stuff

  63. all over our feet but that was was okay

  64. cuz we were on our way to Holiday and

  65. when the satav said you have reached

  66. your

  67. destination we looked around a bit

  68. bemused we weren't at our lovely

  69. campsite but there was this French

  70. farmer I could you not sort of cheer on

  71. a piece of hay looking at us thinking

  72. what are you doing near my Fields I had

  73. programmed us to go 100 miles in the

  74. wrong

  75. direction needless to say that didn't

  76. set our holiday off to a good start

  77. it went very quiet in the

  78. car now that was just an

  79. inconvenience but how much more

  80. serious it is when we lead

  81. others away from God and into

  82. sin verse one and Jesus said to his

  83. disciples Temptations to sin are sure to

  84. come but woe to the one through whom

  85. they

  86. come we live in a sinful World we're

  87. surrounded by Temptations and Jesus is

  88. is under no Illusions the dangers are

  89. real once when I was um running with CLA

  90. through some sort of Woody Fields um I

  91. tripped on a concealed tree stump very

  92. small didn't see it under some leaves

  93. maybe and I just tripped and fell flat

  94. thankfully I landed up in the Press up

  95. position it was like whoa that was

  96. fortunate um it could have ended very

  97. differently but life is like that isn't

  98. it you're just going along comfortably

  99. everything seems to be smooth and then

  100. suddenly out of nowhere something trips

  101. you up and bang you're on the floor

  102. feeling days wondering what happened

  103. Jesus recognizes Temptations they will

  104. come in and so if you are sitting there

  105. thinking well it's not going to affect

  106. me I'm standing firm I'm going to be all

  107. right be careful

  108. beware it really doesn't take much to

  109. trip us up especially when we're not

  110. expecting it the Greek word translated

  111. as tempt to ser in it means a a

  112. stumbling block a hindrance a trap even

  113. the thing that triggers the Trap so it's

  114. anything which causes someone to stumble

  115. into sin Jesus is warning us to make

  116. sure we're not the ones causing others

  117. to trip and fall so verse one but woe to

  118. the one through whom they

  119. come and this is to the disciples he

  120. says in verse three pay

  121. attention to yourselves

  122. pay

  123. attention to

  124. yourselves so we as followers of Jesus

  125. need to pay attention to ensure that we

  126. are not causing other people to stumble

  127. as they follow Jesus you see Jesus loves

  128. his disciples he loves us and he knows

  129. how dangerous sin is and how easily

  130. we're tripped up I me don't you know

  131. that if we're honest don't you know

  132. that do there just going about your

  133. business and there's some image that

  134. just you weren't expecting to see and

  135. it's there or you're in a stressful

  136. situation at work or at home or someone

  137. makes a careless comment to you and it

  138. just gets your backup or the there's

  139. peer pressure in in your friendship

  140. group to do something to be like that

  141. and in a moment we can go from walking

  142. well with the

  143. Lord just suddenly falling into

  144. lust or having a bout of impatience with

  145. someone or being angry about something

  146. that we shouldn't be angry about or we

  147. fall into some other sin we weren't

  148. expecting it we didn't plann for it but

  149. suddenly it was there and there we are

  150. sinning look at the affection that g

  151. language Jesus uses verse two one of

  152. these little

  153. ones one of these little ones notice the

  154. word these you can almost imagine as

  155. Jesus says that sort of opening his arms

  156. pointing to the crowds around the

  157. disciples one of these these these

  158. little ones who's he talking about well

  159. we're still in the discourse that

  160. started in chapter 15 and if we go back

  161. there the beginning is that the Sinners

  162. and the tax collectors were gathering

  163. around

  164. Jesus those were the Sinners that the

  165. Pharisees look down on the these are the

  166. little ones that they're probably just

  167. those who are starting to understand

  168. what following Jesus

  169. means and we do have to be especially

  170. careful in the way that we treat those

  171. who are young in age be that physically

  172. or spiritually

  173. they're just starting out they're babes

  174. they're they've got the spiritual milk

  175. and they got that first taste of God's

  176. grace but they haven't got that Firm

  177. Foundation that 10 five years of

  178. learning behind them perhaps they

  179. haven't got the discernment that the

  180. older Believers going to

  181. have to understand the context there

  182. in so I'm sure that Jesus has in Minds

  183. these little ones were just starting out

  184. but perhaps it's not just those little

  185. ones perhaps Jesus isn't just speaking

  186. about the young in Luke 10: 211 Jesus

  187. Praises God that he's revealed the truth

  188. to little children and there in Luke

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  189. chapter 10 he's speaking about the

  190. disciples so when Jesus says these

  191. little ones he may have especially those

  192. who in mind who are who are young in the

  193. faith but it certainly doesn't

  194. um exclude all of the children of God

  195. everyone all of us as disciples we are

  196. all he little ones in that

  197. sense so what does Jesus say about those

  198. who do calls his little ones or other

  199. believers to

  200. stumble he says woe to you it's a

  201. serious warning woe to

  202. you now interestingly Jesus doesn't

  203. actually tell us what happens to those

  204. who cause others to

  205. stumble but it can't be

  206. good he tells us in verse two it would

  207. be better for

  208. you if this happened to you so verse two

  209. it would be better for him if a

  210. millstone if the one who caused someone

  211. to stumble it'd be better for him if a

  212. millstone were hung around his neck and

  213. he was cast into the sea then that he

  214. should cause one of these little ones to

  215. stumble to sin

  216. the millstone um Jesus refers to it

  217. would have been very heavy it would have

  218. been something that that not one person

  219. could hold on their own it would be in a

  220. mill it would have been the sort of

  221. stone that was dragged around with a

  222. donkey so no one could lift this on

  223. their own that it had a hole in the top

  224. that you pour the grain through and goes

  225. in and then gets ground and so you can

  226. imagine this big stone with a hole in

  227. the top going over someone's head can't

  228. you do

  229. ically so if you had this stone that you

  230. couldn't lift put around your head and

  231. you were thrown into the sea you are

  232. certainly going to drown you're going to

  233. be crushed and you're going to drown

  234. it's a horrible way to

  235. die but Jesus is saying dying this

  236. horrible death that's not the punishment

  237. dying the horrible death is

  238. better than tripping up another

  239. disciple do you see how

  240. seriously God views sin

  241. so if it's that serious well let's think

  242. about in what ways we might risk doing

  243. this so that we can be on our

  244. guard John Don John

  245. dun uh the 17th uh century English poet

  246. and Church of England cleric wrote no

  247. man is an island entire of himself every

  248. man is a piece of the continent

  249. a part of the

  250. main and every disciple is a part of the

  251. body of Christ aren't we you might not

  252. realize but your

  253. attitude your actions your behavior it

  254. affects

  255. others so when you don't go to the

  256. church

  257. meeting that has an effect on others

  258. maybe it's a blessing no I shouldn't say

  259. that but your because you're not there

  260. you're missed and it's just a subtle

  261. effect whatever priorities you establish

  262. in your life the way you

  263. live that's actually going to influence

  264. others when we're rude to someone when

  265. we gossip about someone when we slander

  266. someone we are drawing other people into

  267. our sin causing them to

  268. stumble when we're impatient with people

  269. when we're

  270. aggressive in the way we deal with

  271. people that

  272. catches as just

  273. grumbling and complaining now I'm not

  274. saying there can't be discussion when

  275. things aren't going as as they should be

  276. of course we have to talk about things

  277. if things aren't going well um but it

  278. can so easily slip into

  279. moaning and that's

  280. deadly how else can we trip people up

  281. well perhaps

  282. sexually so the way unmarried boyfriends

  283. and girlfriends behave towards each

  284. other that can be really unhelpful and

  285. cause others to fall into sin perhaps

  286. dare I say it by the things that we

  287. wear might be really unhelpful and cause

  288. people to sin the things we joke about

  289. the things we share the things we say

  290. and of course a a big

  291. area that this

  292. this is speaking about is

  293. teaching it's

  294. teaching what teaches what churches

  295. endorse or bless it

  296. matters the church should be a beacon of

  297. Truth not capitulating to the imoral

  298. demands of our culture and just trying

  299. to fit in and make itself inoffensive

  300. people need to know Sin is Sin and it's

  301. not okay otherwise we're subtly leading

  302. them into

  303. sin if you are a teacher a Christian

  304. teacher of any kind teaching the kids or

  305. you know James 3:1 gives us a warning we

    James 3:1

  306. are to teach the truth it's serious

  307. we're not to lead people

  308. asay I guess not many of us are actually

  309. teachers quite a few but not many what

  310. about parents though how does this

  311. affect us because if anyone's got little

  312. ones it's parents isn't

  313. it your children look to you to learn

  314. what is right and wrong whether you like

  315. it or not they are

  316. tremendously shaped by what you say by

  317. what you do and how you do it so if you

  318. don't care about

  319. something why should they

  320. if you don't

  321. pray why should

  322. they if you don't treasure

  323. god do you think they're going to

  324. treasure

  325. god if meeting with God's people is just

  326. low

  327. priority don't be surprised when your

  328. children just think I can't really be

  329. bothered to go to

  330. church if you shout at your children all

  331. the time and don't show them any respect

  332. don't be surprised when they shout at

  333. you and don't respect

  334. you I'm sure you get the

  335. idea parents be careful with your little

  336. ones I love the directness of verse

  337. three pay attention to

  338. yourselves it's kind of right there

  339. isn't it come on don't think about other

  340. people point the finger at other people

  341. pay

  342. attention to

  343. yourselves Jesus is warning us here

  344. we're not an island you might want to

  345. pull up the draw bridge and pretend that

  346. you're not affecting anyone else but you

  347. you are we always are what we we do

  348. affects and impacts other

  349. people perhaps it would be instructive

  350. if we could have an eanes a scrooge

  351. moment you know where you get a vision

  352. of of how your past things have affected

  353. other people in your life maybe you

  354. could just sit a sort of ghost in the

  355. wall just sort of watching how you were

  356. how how you behaved this week how you

  357. what you said how that impacted people

  358. was it kind was it helpful it would be

  359. very interesting to see from an outside

  360. perspective

  361. how you impacted other people was it

  362. helpful was it hurtful Jesus says watch

  363. yourselves because it' be better for you

  364. to be crushed and drowned than to trip

  365. one of his little children

  366. up well if we fear that an ebener

  367. Scrooge Vision uh would be rather

  368. damning for

  369. us then

  370. surely we need to learn from the master

  371. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 11:1 follow

    1 Corinthians 11:1

  372. my example as I follow the example of

  373. Christ so when we look to Jesus when we

  374. listen to his word when we apply it to

  375. our lives when we Delight in and rely on

  376. God and live out our faith we ourselves

  377. then become a good

  378. example a good example so negatively we

  379. need to watch that we don't trip others

  380. up but positively we are to model Jesus

  381. to others that's the best way to make

  382. sure we're not tripping other people up

  383. isn't it to be someone who is who's been

  384. transformed to be more like Christ and

  385. then instead of tripping them up and

  386. sending them off down a really unhelpful

  387. Direction we'll be helping them in the

  388. right direction and that is towards

  389. Christ but what about when your brother

  390. or sister does

  391. sin they

  392. stumbled they've gone astray and they've

  393. hurt you in some way what do we do do

  394. then but again sin is so serious that

  395. God's children and God's children are so

  396. precious that Jesus commands us to take

  397. action and that's our second Point

  398. rebuking those who

  399. sin my girls used to play a game called

  400. would you

  401. rather and perhaps you played it the

  402. idea is you you give uh people two

  403. choices they would be equally horrible

  404. or equally equally wonderful um so for

  405. example would you rather sleep in a bath

  406. full of spine spiders or would you

  407. rather eat mashed up slugs put your hand

  408. up if You' prefer the

  409. spiders hand up if you like to eat the

  410. Slugs okay right some of you didn't vote

  411. that's cheating you have to make a

  412. choice but you get the idea

  413. right here's another one would you

  414. rather be

  415. rebuked or would you rather be the one

  416. doing the

  417. rebuking I think both are quite

  418. difficult aren't they

  419. now if we're Disciples of Jesus our aim

  420. is to be conformed to the likeness of

  421. Jesus we've realized that God knows what

  422. he's talking about and we've realized

  423. that God's way is always the best way

  424. and if he's done a work in our hearts we

  425. want to please him we want to live for

  426. him it's our joy I want to become more

  427. like him but the trouble is that's in

  428. theory and it doesn't always translate

  429. into practice does it because perhaps

  430. sometimes we just love a certain sin too

  431. much and we won't let go of it or

  432. perhaps there's some area of our lives

  433. and we're blind to it we can't see

  434. what's going on there the blinkers are

  435. on perhaps we just don't see the

  436. insensitive way we act or the way we

  437. speak we haven't realized that our

  438. laziness hurts

  439. others that's a nice tune isn't it

  440. perhaps we're tempted in life to make

  441. everything about us something happens

  442. and we just thinking about me how that

  443. imp impacts me we don't think about

  444. others it hasn't occurred to us that

  445. actually I need to think about the needs

  446. of others in this situation not not just

  447. me it's a hard thing to do sometimes

  448. isn't

  449. it but maybe that's what we need to do

  450. there's all sorts of ways we fall into

  451. sin some sometimes it's obvious

  452. sometimes it's really quite subtle but

  453. when a brother sins against us notice

  454. Jesus isn't talking about unbelievers

  455. sinning is when a brother or sister sins

  456. against us what do we do well it is

  457. really uncomfortable what Jesus says we

  458. have to do we have to rebuke

  459. them now some of you might be just

  460. really up for that and and you love that

  461. idea you have no trouble pointing out

  462. other people's problems and errors in

  463. fact it makes you feel rather good about

  464. yourself because you can say well look

  465. brother I've just noticed you know You'

  466. got this sin and I'm going to tell you

  467. how to sort that out because I've got it

  468. all you know

  469. sorted you know if if you enjoy rebuking

  470. people it's probably that you've got the

  471. wrong attitude and you probably

  472. shouldn't say

  473. anything if you've ever tried to rebuke

  474. someone to make them

  475. feel um humiliated or to make yourself

  476. feel better or

  477. good we need to remember that the these

  478. people are pre precious to Jesus they

  479. are his little ones if a rebuke is

  480. needed it is always with the aim of

  481. restoring them to help them recognize

  482. and rectify their wrongdoing to help

  483. them come to repentance and to turn back

  484. to God elsewhere we're told how to

  485. rebuke people so 1 Timothy uh 1 Timothy

  486. chter 5:1 do not rebuke an older man

  487. harshly but exalt him as if he were your

  488. father Galatians chapter 6 verse one

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  489. Brothers if someone is caught in a sin

  490. you who live by the spirit should

  491. restore that

  492. person

  493. gently gently do you

  494. see 2 Timothy chapter 2:2 opponents must

  495. be gently instructed in the hope that

  496. God will grant them repentance Ephesians

  497. 4 tells us we are to speak the truth in

  498. love so when we rebuke our brother or

  499. sister we need to remember that's what

  500. they are they are a a beloved brother

  501. and sister in the

  502. Lord so we rebuke them gently and and

  503. lovingly and kindly out of hearts that

  504. want to win that person back to the Lord

  505. the hearts that want to do that person

  506. good treating them in the way that we

  507. would like to be treated if we were

  508. caught in that particular sin that

  509. doesn't mean we're not truthful or firm

  510. or direct but it it means it's always in

  511. the context of genuine Christian love

  512. now not only is it hard to rebuke

  513. someone in the right

  514. way it

  515. takes it takes courage it takes a heart

  516. of love it takes a real dose of tact but

  517. I'm sure as we all know it's very hard

  518. to graciously receive a rebuke too

  519. doesn't it it takes humility it takes

  520. teachability it's really

  521. hard sometimes I think the harder the

  522. older you are the harder it is is to

  523. receive a

  524. rebuke but but surely we can learn from

  525. this the idea that Jesus is is

  526. commanding us to rebuke each other

  527. surely that that should tell us actually

  528. when someone corrects Us in some

  529. way this is a good thing maybe there's

  530. something we can learn from this so the

  531. next time someone tries to correct you

  532. or rebuke you perhaps they do it

  533. clumsily perhaps they don't do it quite

  534. in the manner that they should because

  535. they're going to be feeling a about the

  536. whole thing as well but before we jump

  537. on the defense and say oh well what

  538. about her or me or it wasn't my fault

  539. whatever it was because that's what we

  540. do it's always worth pausing for a

  541. moment and considering well

  542. maybe they've got a

  543. point maybe they haven't maybe they are

  544. completely wrong but maybe they do have

  545. a

  546. point maybe there's something in my life

  547. I can't

  548. see maybe I just wasn't aware that there

  549. the way I was acting to that person

  550. wasn't right

  551. actually and even if they're not fully

  552. right maybe there is some truth in

  553. there so when someone corrects you

  554. rebukes you perhaps the thing to do is

  555. to take it prayerfully before the

  556. Lord could this help me grow could this

  557. help me become more like Jesus could

  558. this be good for me could this be good

  559. for those around me me if I listen to

  560. this

  561. correction so Jesus commands us to do it

  562. it's one of the ways to help encourage

  563. each other towards Christian maturity

  564. it's not a way to get at each other it's

  565. a way to encourage each other towards

  566. Jesus so as disciples we to watch

  567. ourselves taking care not to put

  568. stumbling blocks in the paths of others

  569. and if we do see our our brothers

  570. sinning rather than joining them in

  571. their sin we should prayerfully gently

  572. lovingly help them to see what their sin

  573. is in the hopes that it leads them to

  574. repentance and

  575. reconciliation but notice there's a an

  576. if there not everyone will listen not

  577. everyone will turn back not everyone

  578. will repent but if they do then we're to

  579. forgive and that's our final point this

  580. morning forgiving those who

  581. repent some things are easy to forget

  582. aren't they so if someone forgets your

  583. birthday yeah okay okay you know it's

  584. not a big deal um if someone forgets

  585. your coffee order or doesn't make you a

  586. coffee or whatever it's just like w you

  587. know I'll get over that hopefully um but

  588. some things are quite hard to forgive so

  589. when someone I don't know maybe spread

  590. some gossip about you and it did you

  591. harm or maybe someone really hurts you

  592. or

  593. hurts um someone you care

  594. about and is not a li of easy thing and

  595. and that suddenly becomes really hard to

  596. forgive someone doesn't that because you

  597. you don't want to forgive you want to

  598. get your renge

  599. actually then this command to forgive

  600. gets hard verse four Jesus says You

  601. must forgive

  602. them in fact he says even if they sin

  603. seven times in a day and come back to

  604. you seven times in

  605. Repentance we must forgive

  606. now we may have cause to question their

  607. sincerity but Jesus says we must forgive

  608. now is Jesus saying well you forgive

  609. seven times and then on the eighth time

  610. boy you can let them have it you know

  611. that's it I've been counting oh final go

  612. there you go that's not what Jesus is

  613. saying is it it's about being willing

  614. and ready to forgive again and again and

  615. again after all aren't we

  616. glad that God is willing to forgive us

  617. again and again and again and

  618. again well as you can imagine when the

  619. disciples heard this teaching that they

  620. were able to they were having to forgive

  621. someone even if they sinned seven times

  622. against them in the same day was like

  623. what they were flabbergasted they were

  624. thinking I just this is Bonkers Jesus

  625. how can you expect us to do this and so

  626. they they say in verse 5 increase our

  627. faith we need some help with this and we

  628. can understand stand that mean how is

  629. this possible I might be able to forgive

  630. someone once might be able to forgive

  631. them twice but ongoing seriously Jesus I

  632. think you've lost tons of reality

  633. here and we're probably already coming

  634. up with all sorts of Clauses and reasons

  635. as to why this doesn't actually apply to

  636. us why I don't need to forgive that

  637. person for what they did to

  638. me and so we need to to cry out increase

  639. our faith don't we I can't do this this

  640. is

  641. crazy but Jesus knows what he commanding

  642. in human terms is almost

  643. impossible especially if you've been

  644. deeply wounded by their

  645. sin and so I think the disciples have

  646. responded quite well actually they know

  647. they don't have the resources within

  648. themselves to do this so they're asking

  649. for divine help increase our

  650. faith they just haven't quite understood

  651. what they need to ask for so Jesus

  652. corrects them he moves them

  653. on it's not so much more faith you need

  654. it's just you need some Faith even a

  655. little bit of Faith here will

  656. help even Faith as small as a mustard

  657. seed the smallest seed they knew in that

  658. area see he says even with this titchy

  659. small little piece of Faith even with

  660. that minute Speck of Faith amazing

  661. amazing things are

  662. possible because as long as you have

  663. faith in

  664. God something can happen it's not just

  665. about having faith randomly Faith I've

  666. got faith that's not it Faith isn't like

  667. some magical little thing that makes

  668. things happen it's where the faith is

  669. that matters faith in

  670. God because God is great and all through

  671. him all things are possible God can

  672. enable you to do things you never

  673. thought you ever could do

  674. that includes

  675. forgiving the

  676. unforgivable and then Jesus gives them

  677. this wonderful little illustration to

  678. help them understand even with small

  679. Faith he says you can command this

  680. mulbery tree to be uprooted and planted

  681. into the sea notice he says this mbery

  682. tree probably pointing to one nearby

  683. he's like well you can command this you

  684. know this this tree here to be uprooted

  685. and thrown into the sea

  686. perhaps some listening in would push

  687. forward and think oh maybe he's going to

  688. do it maybe we're going to see a miracle

  689. here but Jesus isn't promising us Divine

  690. gardening

  691. Powers though that could come in handy

  692. I'm sure we'd all like to be able to say

  693. a few words and clear our Gardens of

  694. weeds that'd be great wouldn't

  695. it but that's not what Jesus is on about

  696. you see the M tree was um thought or

  697. said to have roots that lasted about 600

  698. years so the the Pharisees claimed um

  699. the idea being this was a deeply rooted

  700. tree or bush you you couldn't just come

  701. along with your little Trel and just get

  702. it out this was like this was a full

  703. day's work to get rid of this thing this

  704. was serious you couldn't pluck this

  705. little thing up like a weed it was solid

  706. and so Jesus is saying moving this mury

  707. tree by word alone that's impossible you

  708. can't do it everyone knows you can't do

  709. it

  710. it's a bit like me saying right um I'm

  711. just going to Moo the the roof of this

  712. this this building with my word and you

  713. go Matt you're Bonkers you can't do it

  714. it's

  715. impossible but Jesus is

  716. saying with small Faith even small Faith

  717. even the impossible is possible so faith

  718. in God can release the spiritual power

  719. to enable you to forgive even the most

  720. deeply

  721. rooted of things of hurts and so when

  722. God calls us to The Impossible it's not

  723. that we have to grit our teeth and

  724. somehow find the resources in me I must

  725. forgive them I really really struggle to

  726. try and forgive them we look in faith to

  727. God asking him to enable us to forgive

  728. what is impossible for us to do on

  729. ourselves by ourselves that's the key I

  730. can't do it but by my faith in God I

  731. can well some of you might still be

  732. struggling with

  733. this and you wonder can God really know

  734. how hurt I felt about

  735. that I don't think I can

  736. ever forgive that person for what they

  737. did to

  738. me and yet God does know what it is to

  739. forgive extreme

  740. sin as the greatest miscarriage of

  741. Justice unfolded on the

  742. cross as the only ever totally innocent

  743. man was put to death God's son was put

  744. to death he didn't deserve that he was

  745. the only person in all of creation that

  746. did not deserve to be put to death and

  747. there he was being put to death and as

  748. God's precious son hung on the cross

  749. Jesus said father forgive them for they

  750. do not know what they are doing and so

  751. Jesus knows what he is talking about he

  752. knows what it is to be betrayed he knows

  753. what it is to be hurt

  754. deeply he knows what it is to be

  755. humiliated to be forsaken to be

  756. painfully and cruy murdered on the cross

  757. Jesus adopted a posture of

  758. forgiveness even towards his enemies as

  759. they crucified him if anyone knew the

  760. cost of

  761. forgiveness surely it's

  762. Jesus as he hung on the cross dying for

  763. our sin that he didn't

  764. commit and it's good that he did that

  765. it's good that he was willing to forgive

  766. us because we are all were all counted

  767. amongst his

  768. enemies but Jesus says father forgive

  769. them Jesus is willing to forgive us how

  770. many times have we sinned can you

  771. remember can you count it up on your

  772. hand

  773. do you know how many times you've sinned

  774. even

  775. today is it seven times will it be seven

  776. by the time you go to

  777. bed Jesus holds out his arms on the

  778. cross in forgiveness beckoning us to

  779. come to be fully pardoned to be restored

  780. to no peace to no reconciliation to no

  781. friendship and for all those whom God

  782. has forgiven we are called to extend the

  783. Forgiveness that we have in Jesus to

  784. those who sin against

  785. us and so in faith we ask God to do the

  786. miracle to change our hearts to give us

  787. the strength to

  788. forgive even if that seems impossible to

  789. us with God's help we can

  790. forgive even the

  791. unforgivable so in

  792. conclusion sin is offensive to

  793. God it's

  794. dangerous it's like fire it consumes it

  795. destroys

  796. so we to watch ourselves making sure

  797. we're not going to cause other people to

  798. stumble into sin but if your brother or

  799. sister if they sin against you what do

  800. you do where you rebuke them gently in

  801. love and if they repent we to to look to

  802. to Jesus on the cross and in faith place

  803. our rights our hurts our Justice

  804. everything else into his hands and say I

  805. entrust it all with you God I give it

  806. all to you and in faith we make the

  807. conscious decision to forgive

  808. again and again and

  809. again sounds

  810. impossible but With God all things are

  811. possible so let's avoid causing sin

  812. let's call for change when someone does

  813. sin and by faith let's seek God's help

  814. so that we are ready to forgive others

  815. who sin against

  816. us well let's be quiet before the Lord

  817. perhaps we ourselves need to repent of

  818. our sin today
