  1. excellent well it will be helpful if you

  2. have that passage open in front of you

  3. um each year as remembrance Sunday comes

  4. around the distance between us now and

  5. the two World Wars which particularly

  6. spark our remembrance though of course

  7. we do remember uh conflicts later on as

  8. well but that distance between then and

  9. now only ever increases doesn't it it's

  10. over a 100 years since the 11th of

  11. November 198

  12. when the Armistice was signed that

  13. brought World War I to an

  14. end the average age for a soldier in

  15. World War II was

  16. 26 that means Veterans of that war are

  17. now mostly over a 100 years old if they

  18. are still alive and every year there are

  19. those who ask the question how much

  20. longer will this important National Act

  21. of remembrance

  22. remain how long until it is relegated to

  23. the history

  24. books the Traditions must be passed on

  25. the lessons continually taught and

  26. adaptations have been made so we

  27. remember not just those conflicts of the

  28. early 20th century but those later as

  29. well to this day on the state opening of

  30. parliament when that happens there is a

  31. ceremonial procession that

  32. occurs the Royal bodyguard processes

  33. throughout Westminster palace uh to

  34. ensure that there's no gunpowder in

  35. place a tradition which dates back to

  36. 160 5 and the Gunpowder Plot of course

  37. that was uh gunpowder bomb finite was

  38. this week wasn't

  39. it so we can see these things do persist

  40. over decades centuries

  41. even I mean we remember that during the

  42. coronation there were aspects of that

  43. service that date back nearly a thousand

  44. years well this morning our text is not

  45. about big National occasions and whether

  46. or not they will continue but about our

  47. prayer and the question as to whether or

  48. not our prayer is

  49. persistent now if you are a Believer you

  50. will have had struggles with prayer at

  51. times prayer is a lifelong calling we

  52. ought to pray every day as Daniel

  53. multiple times a day seems

  54. wise there are some things that we ought

  55. to pray for every day for the rest of

  56. our

  57. lives but how

  58. how do we

  59. persist what about in the face of

  60. unanswered prayer how do we keep

  61. going well that's what our text calls us

  62. to today here in Luke 18 now some of you

  63. have more to say from personal

  64. experience than I do indeed many of you

  65. do having lived longer having had

  66. faithful prayer routines and more

  67. faithful prayer routines than I have had

  68. but my job this morning is to unpack for

  69. us what Luke 18 1 to8 has to say to us

  70. and to Spur us on and as ever I preach

  71. as much to myself as I preach to you and

  72. very handily Luke sets us in the right

  73. direction straight away look at verse

  74. one again with me and he told them a

  75. parable to the effect that they ought

  76. always to pray and not lose heart well

  77. there we go sermon over no no um

  78. although you know some of us might be

  79. grateful for that if you've got a

  80. chicken in the oven it might get a

  81. little bit cremated now but there we are

  82. imagine with me for a moment that you're

  83. in bed right and uh you're sleeping

  84. nicely it's one of those cold nights so

  85. you've you know nicely snuggled up in

  86. bed maybe you've got the electric

  87. blanket on if you've got one of those

  88. and suddenly the doorbell

  89. rings you ignore it it rings again and

  90. because you are of course a very modern

  91. person with one of these fancy doorbells

  92. with a camera in it you get your phone

  93. out and you open the app and you blind

  94. yourself briefly cuz that always happens

  95. in the night doesn't it and you can see

  96. who is at your door and it's me I'm

  97. stood there

  98. hi now what would you

  99. do would you talk to me through the

  100. phone would you come to the door would

  101. you ring Matt and tell him to come and

  102. round up the training pasta he's got out

  103. again and I start asking for food I say

  104. look there some people have turned up at

  105. our house and we weren't expecting them

  106. but I've already eaten all the bread and

  107. cheese and I want to give them some

  108. bread bread and cheese have you got some

  109. bread and

  110. cheese can I have

  111. some how many times do you think I would

  112. have to ask you until you do it start

  113. looking for you know a few slices of

  114. Granary and a block of cheddar right how

  115. long would it

  116. take now it is a ridiculous scenario for

  117. our day and age isn't it right

  118. realistically I could get in my car and

  119. I could in not too long probably find a

  120. shop that's still open and manage to buy

  121. some

  122. food and people don't tend to turn up in

  123. an unexpected way at least not here down

  124. south

  125. these things are usually planned months

  126. in advance if you're like my

  127. family well I put you in that scenario

  128. to draw our attention to the fact that

  129. Jesus has already given teaching on

  130. persistent Prayer in Luke back in Luke

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  131. chapter 11 a parable pretty much like

  132. the story I told you a man goes to his

  133. friend's door and he continually knocks

  134. on it and keeps on asking for some bread

  135. to give some food to unexpected guests

  136. who have come to him

  137. and Jesus there talking about persistent

  138. praying well we've seen that Luke 18 has

  139. a very similar Parable there's a widow

  140. and she just keeps on asking until she

  141. gets what she

  142. needs but there is a key difference

  143. between these two Parables and really it

  144. comes out in the

  145. context here in Luke chapter 18 Jesus

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  146. has just finished teaching about the

  147. coming of the

  148. Kingdom the end of all things Matt

  149. preached on this last week Jesus will

  150. come back one day and bring in the

  151. Kingdom in its fullness and people will

  152. be about all the busyness of life and

  153. acting as if life's just going to keep

  154. on going on the way that it is and then

  155. the Lord will

  156. return and some will be

  157. saved some will not and it's with that

  158. teaching still ringing in their ears

  159. that Jesus continued with this

  160. Parable so our plan then we're going to

  161. we're going to walk through the parable

  162. just quickly and then we're going to ask

  163. the question how can we be those who

  164. persistently pray not just for a week

  165. not just a month but for years decades

  166. as long as the Lord has for you left on

  167. this Earth so let's look at the parable

  168. verse two he said in a certain city

  169. there was a judge who neither feared God

  170. nor respected

  171. man it's a judge who's totally

  172. unqualified to be a judge in Israel in

  173. particular it should have been those who

  174. feared the Lord who serve as judges

  175. after all their law books come from God

  176. himself if they've got no respect for

  177. the originator of the law why would they

  178. respect the

  179. law but this judge isn't like

  180. that in our day too we recognize the

  181. need of having judges who are people who

  182. care about human

  183. lives a callous person would not be

  184. appointed as a judge in our day and age

  185. because we recognize the authority that

  186. they are given the influence that it has

  187. and we want to protect

  188. life and here we ought to sober

  189. ourselves with the reality that as a

  190. society we are rather like the judge in

  191. this

  192. Parable we fall short in terms of a

  193. conern concern and respect for human

  194. life how else would it be that in our

  195. day we are so plagued by the killing of

  196. innocent children at their most

  197. vulnerable in the

  198. womb this judge who has no care for

  199. human life would have no quals with

  200. abortion he does not care and he does

  201. not fear

  202. God really what Jesus is showing us here

  203. this is a judge who is about as bad as

  204. he could would be the very worst person

  205. to argue your case

  206. before and the person doing the arguing

  207. bringing her case is someone who is so

  208. so needy look at verse three and there

  209. was a widow in that City now when we

  210. read the term Widow our minds often jump

  211. to much older women but given that in

  212. Jesus day it was common for women to be

  213. married as young as 13 or

  214. 14 and that for many re reasons

  215. including War

  216. and the fact there was a great risk of

  217. death even from the smallest of cuts

  218. becoming

  219. infected that one might be widowed more

  220. commonly at a much younger age as a

  221. young

  222. woman I think of the sort of woman I

  223. read an article this week she's 21 years

  224. old she's just come out of the care

  225. system she's got three children under

  226. five and she's recently been made

  227. homeless because she made a complaint

  228. about feeling threatened in the home

  229. that she was placed in utter

  230. vulnerable that's what we're to have in

  231. our minds here as Jesus presents us with

  232. this Widow a totally vulnerable woman

  233. and a totally unrighteous

  234. judge the Widow ought to have been

  235. protected the law that God gave his

  236. people is very clear it even goes so far

  237. as to say this cursed be anyone who

  238. perverts the Justice due to the sjena

  239. the fatherless and the Widow there's

  240. curse upon those who do not care for the

  241. Widow a righteous judge would have acted

  242. in a moment to help this poor

  243. Widow but it looks like a disaster

  244. that's the scenario that Jesus

  245. paints but she is persistent look at

  246. verse three and four and there was a

  247. widow in that City who kept coming to

  248. him and saying give me Justice against

  249. my

  250. adversary for a while he refused and

  251. we'll pause there and recognize she is

  252. so persistent even in the face of being

  253. told no why because this judge is her

  254. only hope clearly she's got some kind of

  255. legal matter we're not told exactly what

  256. some kind of justice is needed against

  257. an adversary this judge is the only one

  258. who can do anything about

  259. it so she's not exactly going to give up

  260. asking she goes on asking and asking and

  261. asking

  262. verse four again for a while he refused

  263. but afterward he said to himself though

  264. I neither fear God nor respect

  265. man yet because this Widow keeps

  266. bothering me I will give her justice so

  267. that she will not beat me down by her

  268. continual coming the judge relents now

  269. notice he doesn't have some change of

  270. heart this isn't a wonderful Redemption

  271. story he is still a judge who does not

  272. care for human beings who does not fear

  273. the lord it's a pragmatic

  274. thing the term that's translated so that

  275. she will not beat me down can more

  276. literally be translated to give someone

  277. a black eye that's the that that's the

  278. language that's being used here now it

  279. doesn't seem that Jesus is telling a

  280. parable in which the judge worries about

  281. this Widow beating him up not physically

  282. anyway but the strength of the language

  283. is she's just going to keep on coming

  284. and coming and coming it's going to be

  285. as if she's punched me right in the

  286. face he's totally selfishly motivated

  287. and wanting to avoid that moment of pain

  288. he just gives in early on it's a

  289. tactical decision to shut her up all

  290. right fine I'll do

  291. it that's the parable and then we get

  292. the meaning which features what we call

  293. a lesser to a greater argument lesser to

  294. Greater see if you can spot it and the

  295. Lord says hear what the unrighteous

  296. judge says

  297. and will not God give Justice to his

  298. elect who cry to him day and night will

  299. he delay long over them I tell you he

  300. will give Justice to them

  301. speedily right if a toddler stands on an

  302. egg and it

  303. breaks if I was to stand on that same

  304. egg we could safely assume it will break

  305. right I weigh a lot more than a toddler

  306. lesser to Greater right or or in the

  307. summer sof and I we went camping in

  308. Cornwall um we took our van we've got a

  309. like a blow up awning that goes on the

  310. side of it and we had one night where it

  311. rained and it wasn't even that much rain

  312. at all very very blessed week but we

  313. found in the morning there were drips on

  314. the ground sheet right and we're

  315. thinking right if the awning manages to

  316. leak on a night when it only rains a

  317. tiny little amount if a lot of rain's

  318. going to come we're going to have a big

  319. problem right lesser to

  320. Greater well Jesus is saying

  321. if an unjust judge who does not care for

  322. human beings who doesn't fear the lord

  323. if he can be moved by a persistent Widow

  324. someone who's so vulnerable who has no

  325. status how much more will God who is the

  326. God of Justice give Justice to his

  327. people when they ask for

  328. it that's the difference it's lesser to

  329. Greater this judge eventually gave

  330. Justice look at how God is he will

  331. surely give

  332. Justice and this is where remember I

  333. said earlier in Luke we've already had

  334. teaching about persistent prayer Luke 11

  335. this is where Luke 18 and Luke 11 are

  336. most

  337. similar persistence in prayer should be

  338. motivated by the character of

  339. God if a friend can be convinced to

  340. leave their warm bed for something that

  341. is needed

  342. by

  343. persistence how much more will God be

  344. willing to answer prayers here the judge

  345. is moved to do Justice by

  346. persistence how much more will a just

  347. God answer persistent prayer for

  348. justice so here's our first point of

  349. application then if you want to be

  350. someone who

  351. prays

  352. persistently

  353. consistently for the same issue you even

  354. for years and years and years you must

  355. start with a right knowledge of God's

  356. character if you come away from this

  357. passage thinking I need to be persistent

  358. in prayer because I got to convince God

  359. to give me you know by enough prayers

  360. convince God to give me blessings that I

  361. need we're missing the point right God's

  362. character he's not like some unwilling

  363. businessman guarding his possessions

  364. with a miser eye this isn't Scrooge with

  365. the coal not wanting to give it away

  366. this is God who is generous The Giver of

  367. all good gifts he is bountifully

  368. generous and

  369. loving and certainly as is the focus of

  370. this Parable the God of

  371. Justice now notice as

  372. well in verse

  373. seven God is Not distant and uncaring

  374. it's not and will not God give Justice

  375. to to the

  376. elect it says and will not God give

  377. Justice to his elect there's this

  378. possessiveness that God has about his

  379. people he loves us he cares for us he

  380. calls us even makes us to be his

  381. children if we are to be people of

  382. persistent prayer we must know what God

  383. is like if we think you know I've got to

  384. be persistent in prayer because somehow

  385. I've got to drag out blessing from God

  386. you're not going to keep going

  387. maybe some of us would maybe some of us

  388. would be like this Widow who could deal

  389. with someone who just keeps saying no

  390. and not give up but that's not who we

  391. come

  392. to know what God is like right Christmas

  393. is coming whether we're ready or not

  394. books like this the gospel story book

  395. Bible are really helpful they give us an

  396. overview of some of the biggest stories

  397. most famous stories really in the Old

  398. and New Testament and they point us to

  399. Jesus in the gospel what a wonderful

  400. gift this would be to give to your

  401. children and read it with them so that

  402. they can learn what God is like set them

  403. up to be people of persistent prayer

  404. maybe you struggle with your devotions

  405. right can I commend to you table talk

  406. this is something I've been taking for a

  407. few months now and I found it incredible

  408. so so helpful really really helpful

  409. articles come and have a look afterwards

  410. it's a subscription it comes through my

  411. door once a month and it gives me as

  412. well as some really helpful articles a

  413. devotion per day and I could just read

  414. that it gives me extra bits that I can

  415. go into as well right so so helpful in

  416. reminding me every morning what is God

  417. like because if I forget what God's like

  418. I'm not going to keep on praying can I

  419. commend that to you if you're struggling

  420. with your Bible

  421. reading you're not the only one here who

  422. that's the case for can I encourage you

  423. make use of resources like this come and

  424. have a chat you can have a look at them

  425. afterwards right

  426. plug over I don't make any money from

  427. that just just you know declaring

  428. interest I

  429. don't to really know God to really know

  430. his character that's at least a step

  431. onto the road of persistent regular

  432. praying but now we need to look at where

  433. Luke 11 and Luke 18 are different

  434. remember earlier we said that the

  435. context of this passage Jesus has just

  436. been teaching about the end times

  437. right people be going about all their

  438. business suddenly the Lord will come

  439. some will be saved some will not be

  440. saved look at verse

  441. seven and will not God give Justice to

  442. his

  443. elect who cry to him day and

  444. night will he delay long over

  445. them Justice is particularly in view in

  446. this Parable not just persistent prayer

  447. but persistent prayer that Justice would

  448. be done

  449. at the end of all

  450. things when Jesus comes

  451. again Justice will be done in Revelation

  452. 20 we get this fabulous incredible

  453. Vision then I saw a great white throne

  454. and him who was Seated on it from his

  455. presence Earth and Sky fled away and no

  456. place was found for them and I saw the

  457. dead Great and Small standing standing

  458. Before the Throne and books were

  459. opened then another book was opened

  460. which is The Book of

  461. Life and the dead were judged by what

  462. was written in the books according to

  463. what they had

  464. done in a world full of

  465. Injustice those people who perpetrate

  466. war

  467. crimes or terrorist offenses those PE

  468. people who seem to just get away with it

  469. they will face

  470. Justice even those people we get these

  471. periodically in the news don't we those

  472. people who they've died and then a few

  473. months later all the news comes out

  474. about them the things that apparently

  475. lots of people already knew about them

  476. but never did anything while they were

  477. alive and it's infuriating isn't it why

  478. wouldn't why didn't these people speak

  479. up not the victims other people who knew

  480. about it and they did nothing it's

  481. infuriating TV stars Hotel magnates

  482. Justice will we

  483. done they have not escaped

  484. Justice or those who are persecuted for

  485. their faith they in particular will know

  486. Justice 10 of the disciples who are with

  487. Jesus while he's teaching this will face

  488. execution because of their

  489. faith some by sword some by spear some

  490. by crucifixion some by worse

  491. there will be Justice tonight we have a

  492. prayer meeting for the persecuted church

  493. we will hear about some of what our

  494. Brothers and Sisters in Christ

  495. face but we don't come together to pray

  496. Lord please please bring Justice and and

  497. thinking well it might never

  498. happen it's not an uncertain thing that

  499. we're going to come here to do

  500. tonight there's

  501. certainty there are many uncertainties

  502. in life but let's be clear on things are

  503. certain a certain hope that when the

  504. kingdom comes in its fullness at last

  505. when Jesus returns all those who have

  506. suffered for their faith will know

  507. perfect

  508. Justice and the challenge of this

  509. Parable is in verse

  510. eight I tell you he will give Justice to

  511. them speedily nevertheless when the son

  512. of man

  513. comes will he find faith on Earth

  514. when Jesus comes will he find us to be a

  515. people who are praying in faith-filled

  516. Hope even as we do mourn for what

  517. happens now will will be found praying

  518. for perfect Justice to be

  519. done will we still be

  520. praying or will we have given up what

  521. will our actions say about our beliefs

  522. now a challenge of this passage and I

  523. don't have as much time as I need to to

  524. really go into this I'm going to give

  525. you the short version is about the

  526. timing okay half second half of verse 7

  527. notice it says will he delay long over

  528. them I tell you he will give Justice to

  529. them speedily right the question of

  530. timing there speedy Justice right it

  531. will

  532. happen what we are called to here is

  533. really what we started by singing about

  534. this morning

  535. is to remember actually Speedy Justice

  536. yes God will act God will not

  537. delay but God's timing is not the same

  538. as our

  539. timing and this isn't a copout answer

  540. this is the answer of the Bible in 2

  541. Peter chapter

  542. 3:8 we read this do not overlook this

  543. one fact beloved that with the Lord one

  544. day is as a thousand years and A

  545. Thousand Years is as one day the Lord is

  546. not not slow to fulfill his promise as

  547. some count

  548. slowness and actually he then goes on to

  549. say but is patient towards you not

  550. wishing that any should perish but that

  551. all should reach

  552. repentance so what Jesus is saying here

  553. is not that perfect Justice will come

  554. super quickly it's been nearly 2,000

  555. years since Jesus spoke these

  556. words what he's saying is it is

  557. certainly going to

  558. come it is in God's perspective outside

  559. of time it is Speedy Justice it will be

  560. fast and not speedy justice as in where

  561. a court case kind of gets half heard and

  562. everything's not uncovered no everything

  563. will be covered it certainly is coming

  564. that's the thrust of what Jesus is

  565. saying I recognize I've not spent very

  566. long on that but I've got to press on

  567. otherwise your chickens really will burn

  568. very properly in your ovens we press

  569. on so we can then persistently pray for

  570. justice knowing that those prayers will

  571. be fully

  572. answered there will be no miscarriages

  573. of Justice in the court of

  574. God um perhaps you might have come

  575. across uh films films like these right

  576. you might recognize these names films

  577. like Aaron Brockovich dark Waters

  578. Spotlight the torture report if you've

  579. not come across any of those I apologize

  580. for the references but they are stories

  581. of people who over years and years years

  582. and years and years persistently pursue

  583. a particular case some great Injustice

  584. normally in those examples and these

  585. films make a huge amount of money

  586. they're really really

  587. popular why is

  588. that well for one thing it's wonderful

  589. seeing the rugged determination of

  590. people isn't it I mean it's it's

  591. inspiring but more than that every human

  592. being has a deep desire to see Justice

  593. properly done it is there it's

  594. undeniable we hate

  595. injustices people write columns and

  596. columns and columns about injustices

  597. that exist in our society people who

  598. just seem to do what they want and they

  599. don't care about what it does to other

  600. people the Bible has something much

  601. better to give to them than a story of

  602. one or two remarkable people who keep on

  603. going the Bible says if you long for

  604. justice long for Jesus who came to this

  605. world conceived in the womb of his human

  606. mother Mary he

  607. came if you long for justice long for

  608. Jesus who lived his life

  609. perfectly totally obedient to the

  610. law if we long for justice we should

  611. long for Jesus who despite his

  612. Perfection went willingly to the cross

  613. the place of punishment to take the

  614. justice that we

  615. deserve the punishment of of God in our

  616. place if we long for justice we should

  617. long for Jesus who rose again showing

  618. that Anyone who puts their faith in him

  619. when they come to stand before God on

  620. that last great day and the books are

  621. opened there will be no debt against

  622. them none at all because Christ has paid

  623. it see that is the message we need to

  624. give to the world

  625. long for

  626. justice long for

  627. Jesus he is the solution to the problems

  628. that we

  629. Face how can we be those who build

  630. prayer lives that are P persistent then

  631. how can we be those who pray for the

  632. same cause the same people year after

  633. year decade after decade

  634. Faithfully how can we set ourselves up

  635. for the Long

  636. Haul well for one thing there's people

  637. in here who've been doing that talk to

  638. them right let's share these things home

  639. groups are a vital part of this

  640. church I would even go and say far to

  641. say that home groups are totally

  642. vital without home groups we miss on

  643. those opportunities really to commune

  644. with each other we can talk with maybe

  645. one or two people after the service but

  646. to spend time every other week with

  647. people praying discussing sharing our

  648. lives learning from each other

  649. is so

  650. important so make it a

  651. priority and if the timings don't work

  652. for you and that's what's holding you

  653. back talk to the

  654. elders secondly we need to learn about

  655. the character of God right we need to

  656. know what God is like we got a wrong

  657. idea of what God is like we won't pray

  658. persistently we just won't we'll give up

  659. remember God is generous

  660. he's not Eben a scrooge holding back

  661. misily no arms open wide he

  662. gives

  663. and we should be praying in light of the

  664. fact that Jesus is coming back he will

  665. bring perfect Justice it's a matter of

  666. timing and on this third point there are

  667. some matters that we can pray for where

  668. we already know it will 100% be

  669. answered Justice is one of them right

  670. Jesus is coming back perfect Justice

  671. will be done whenever you pray for

  672. justice that prayer will be

  673. answered because that's what God is

  674. about and so then we might ask well why

  675. pray at all if Justice is going to

  676. happen anyway why should I persistently

  677. pray for

  678. justice and this is where it's vital we

  679. understand that

  680. prayer is not is not just us bringing

  681. things to God prayer is a means of Grace

  682. it's a way by which God shows his grace

  683. to us pours his grace out on us the

  684. clearest illustration of that is how

  685. does someone become a Christian someone

  686. asked you how do I become a Christian

  687. what would you say you would say pray to

  688. God confess your sins it's by prayer

  689. that we receive that greatest of Graces

  690. forgiveness in the same way as we pray

  691. for justice which we know is coming but

  692. in the short term we can see so many

  693. problems that feel so difficult we know

  694. it's coming God in his grace he shapes

  695. and molds our hearts towards his will as

  696. we

  697. pray prayer isn't about you doing

  698. something to God prayer is about God

  699. doing something to

  700. you that's how it works God doesn't need

  701. us to pray but he Wills us to pray for

  702. our good so as I there's some cause some

  703. situation that you know about that

  704. hasn't come to light and as you pray for

  705. it as you're praying in the Hope Lord

  706. Jesus I know there will be perfect

  707. Justice one day I know it is coming but

  708. please in the meantime ple might this

  709. happen might that happen we can bring

  710. those things but underpinning it all we

  711. know it is

  712. coming and that shapes our

  713. hearts and helps us to live more

  714. Faithfully towards him as we better

  715. understand what God is

  716. like another example of a prayer which

  717. is always

  718. answered is for the healing of a

  719. Believer the healing of a believer that

  720. prayer will always be

  721. answered not necessarily in this

  722. life but when Jesus comes again his

  723. people will be given perfect new bodies

  724. read first 1 Corinthians 15 perfect new

  725. bodies in which to enjoy the perfect new

  726. heavens and new earth so by all means we

  727. pray for medical intervention to be

  728. effective great thing to pray we pray

  729. for wisdom for doctors and nurses we

  730. pray to a God who doesn't enjoy seeing

  731. his people suffer far from it so it's

  732. not like we're trying to squeeze out an

  733. unwilling blessing from God as we pray

  734. for someone's

  735. healing but when those prayers go

  736. unanswered in this life

  737. we know they will be answered and

  738. actually those prayers are not wasted

  739. unanswered prayer is not wasted

  740. prayer because as we pray those things

  741. we're exercising faith that God is the

  742. one who is in control of all

  743. things remember the Widow with the judge

  744. she goes to the judge because the judge

  745. is the only one who can help her why do

  746. we pray because God is the only one

  747. ultimately who can make a difference so

  748. as we pray and pray and pray for

  749. something you might commit many hours of

  750. your life to praying for

  751. someone and you do not see that prayer

  752. answered in this

  753. lifetime but God has been causing you as

  754. you pray to be exercising Faith to be

  755. growing in strength with him it is a

  756. means of

  757. Grace so yes keep record of your

  758. answered

  759. prayers but keep record of your

  760. unanswered prayers too

  761. because they are not a testament to the

  762. unfaithfulness of

  763. God they are a testament to what God is

  764. doing in your

  765. life he has allowed you to pray those

  766. prayers knowing that they will not be

  767. answered in this

  768. life for your

  769. good for I'm going to have to draw to a

  770. close now to those who persistently pray

  771. to be someone who persistently

  772. prays we need to have a true sense of

  773. this certainty and uncertainty in prayer

  774. right when you pray for something that

  775. is

  776. uncertain you don't know if that person

  777. is ever going to be saved but as you

  778. pray for them that they might be saved

  779. for

  780. example root that in something which is

  781. certain which is that God will always

  782. work for his people's

  783. good he will always work for his glory

  784. root your un certain prayers in the

  785. certainty that God will do you good God

  786. will achieve his glory it's a golden

  787. rule of prayer remember that when you

  788. can pray nothing else Lord do your

  789. people

  790. good Lord bring glory to your

  791. name when the son of man comes will he

  792. find faith on

  793. Earth will he find us in persistent

  794. prayer for those things certain and

  795. uncertain

  796. by the grace of God we might be found so

  797. prayer is never wasted
