  1. I'm sure most of us have spent some time

  2. on social media at some point and if you

  3. have you'll have come across

  4. inspirational posts a bit like these

  5. that should appear there you probably

  6. can't read it but you know some nice

  7. picture with an inspiring motivational

  8. statement like believe in yourself or uh

  9. you're lovely or you will succeed and of

  10. course some of those things are quite

  11. nice to read and and sometimes that's

  12. just what we need actually a little bit

  13. of encouragement we all need some

  14. encouragement at some point in our lives

  15. don't we but whilst most of us need

  16. encouragement at times and that's that's

  17. right other

  18. people can be a little bit full of

  19. themselves this is who Jesus addresses

  20. in verse

  21. 9 he also told this Parable to some who

  22. trusted in themselves that they were

  23. righteous and treated others with

  24. contempt so these are those who trust in

  25. their own righteousness they assume that

  26. they are better than others they've

  27. reached the stage of Holiness that

  28. allows them to look down on judgment and

  29. even contempt at those around them they

  30. probably see it as their god-given right

  31. to go around and point out where

  32. everyone else is going

  33. wrong they assume of course God is

  34. pleased with me not like so many of

  35. these other compromisers that are around

  36. these

  37. days and don't get them started on

  38. church with all its faults they could

  39. tell you what's wrong with

  40. everyone one of the Hallmarks of

  41. self-righteousness is that we start to

  42. look down on others verse n and we treat

  43. others with contempt this is the kind of

  44. person Jesus is speaking to and as we IE

  45. these

  46. proud religious people it's easy for us

  47. to condemn them assuming that actually

  48. Jesus is speaking to them and not to

  49. us because after all most of us in this

  50. room are probably well we consider

  51. ourselves probably quite good

  52. Christians not like those wishy-washy

  53. Christians up the road and all the

  54. things that they do no we we're you know

  55. we come we come to an fi church and

  56. we're we're Bible believing church and

  57. you know we might be quite proud of

  58. ourselves in

  59. that maybe we thank our thank God that

  60. we we're not like some of those hyper

  61. strict Christians we may know as well

  62. you know who have to do this that and

  63. the other and you go oh dear how silly

  64. how ridiculous you know we sort of get a

  65. bit smug as we look down on

  66. them so it's easy isn't it as we come to

  67. a passage like this to start to apply it

  68. to other

  69. people without realizing perhaps this

  70. applies to us

  71. too so we need to heed Jesus's warning

  72. of how not to be and that's our first

  73. point how not to be the parable Jesus

  74. tells uh it starts almost a bit like a

  75. joke doesn't it so verse 10 two men went

  76. up to the temple to pray so really like

  77. two men went into the bar and you know

  78. then what follows and and one said that

  79. one said that and then there the punch

  80. line and this Parable does kind of have

  81. a punch

  82. line but it's no

  83. joke for what is at stake is getting

  84. right with God being justified before

  85. God being justified means to be declared

  86. righteous it is your standing your

  87. status before a holy God when you are

  88. Justified God says you are not

  89. guilty you are acceptable you are

  90. pleasing to God so this isn't a laughing

  91. matter this deals with how we can be

  92. made right with God and that is

  93. something that every single person needs

  94. to be made right with

  95. God verse 10 Jesus introduces us to

  96. these two men they go to the temple one

  97. is a Pharisee the other is a tax

  98. collector now because many of us are so

  99. familiar with the sort of biblical

  100. framework and and what we understand

  101. some of these things we we can miss the

  102. point of

  103. this so if I don't if you've ever walked

  104. into um a film halfway through and you

  105. kind of haven't got a clue what's going

  106. on you think well you know everyone's

  107. running around there's car chases

  108. there's people shouting at each other

  109. and for a moment you don't really know

  110. you don't know how to orientate yourself

  111. to what's going on who are the goodies

  112. and who are the bades here you know

  113. what's happening who who should I be

  114. rooting

  115. for now for those of us who know our

  116. Bibles we usually view the Pharisees in

  117. a negative light don't we but actually

  118. at that point the Pharisees were the

  119. good guys

  120. they were the good guys they were really

  121. good the Pharisees were serious about

  122. their religion they were deeply

  123. religious people uh you would have

  124. viewed these as devout and moral

  125. specimens of religious Excellence they

  126. were top notot religious people this is

  127. the sort of guy that would be a church

  128. goer and they would go to all the

  129. meetings they would tithe Faithfully

  130. they would strive to do the right thing

  131. he would be so holy that you would feel

  132. intimidated in his presence he would

  133. barely smile in case that was a sin you

  134. know it was like this is how serious

  135. they were about their

  136. religion and everyone the crowd

  137. listening to this he himself would

  138. assume if anyone was right with God it

  139. would be him of course God would like

  140. him he was one of God's firm

  141. favorites so to the original hearers the

  142. Pharisees were obviously the good guys

  143. in this

  144. story and in this this Parable the

  145. Pharisee he stands by

  146. himself you have to wonder why why is

  147. that pointed

  148. out probably because he viewed himself

  149. so

  150. holy that he didn't want to be close to

  151. the

  152. contamination of others I don't know

  153. okay there we go right so he he he

  154. separated

  155. himself from others possibly because he

  156. doesn't want to be contaminated uh by um

  157. the the sin of of others he stands on

  158. his own he's in a class of his

  159. own how how could he pray with all these

  160. other Sinners

  161. nearby with all their distracting

  162. sinfulness and you know I think that's

  163. possibly why some people some Believers

  164. Never find a church to settle

  165. it they have

  166. this self-righteous approach to worship

  167. like that they're better than than other

  168. people in some way and you often find

  169. this sort of person they're moving from

  170. church to church not wanting to submit

  171. MIT to what's being taught not wanting

  172. to learn they assume that they are the

  173. ones who have something to

  174. bring and this kind of person often gets

  175. frustrated when the church leadership

  176. don't recognize their special

  177. standing their special uh gifts and so

  178. they end up going from church to church

  179. and uh just noting all the thoughts of

  180. that church and in the end probably not

  181. going to any church at all because they

  182. can't find a church good enough these

  183. churches are just full of Sinners and

  184. they don't want to be

  185. there that's what happens when you get

  186. self-righteous you just you're just full

  187. of judgment and

  188. contempt that's the attitude here he

  189. stands by himself he's separated himself

  190. off from other worshippers he's too good

  191. that's what's going on he's too good do

  192. you

  193. know this was many years ago I went to

  194. this um it was a Christian meeting it

  195. was was all sorts of different

  196. Christians were at this meeting and it

  197. came to the singing bit and I was really

  198. surprised cuz when it came to the

  199. singing B this guy was sitting next to

  200. you he got up and he left the aisle that

  201. we were on and he stood to the side and

  202. a couple of other people did this I

  203. thought what's what's wrong with me do I

  204. smell or something am I am I giving off

  205. bad spiritual Vibes or something you

  206. know what's happening here maybe I'm

  207. being unfair maybe he wanted room to

  208. express himself and he didn't want to

  209. hit me or something with energetic

  210. worship I don't know

  211. but I wanted to say to

  212. him why were you unable to worship when

  213. you were sitting next to me what was it

  214. I help me understand he he wanted to

  215. separate himself off for some reason and

  216. that's what this guy in this Parable

  217. does he doesn't stand with the rest he

  218. chooses a spot all by himself he's got

  219. contempt for those around him he he

  220. hopes well I hope

  221. that no one here feels too good to

  222. worship with those around you we are all

  223. sinners aren't we but there's all always

  224. things you can point out that that

  225. people do wrong but I hope you're

  226. willing to join in worshiping the Lord

  227. with your brothers and

  228. sisters now it's noted that he

  229. stood that's not a problem standing to

  230. pray that was often the the posture that

  231. they took when when praying in those

  232. days and praying is a good thing as well

  233. I mean that's that's great isn't he so

  234. he's standing he praying and and Jesus

  235. has just told in the first eight verses

  236. of this chapter that your disciples you

  237. to pray and never go give up so this is

  238. a good thing he he's there he's praying

  239. to the

  240. Lord but the prayer he prays it's not a

  241. template to

  242. follow he makes a self- congratulatory

  243. show of praying to God verse 11 God I

  244. thank you that's a good start thanking

  245. God we teach our children start by

  246. thanking God and that's brilliant so

  247. he's start by thanking God but look what

  248. he's saying look what he's thanking God

  249. for this isn't a humble prayer seeking

  250. God this is a self-praise prayer this is

  251. like a peacock Fanning his his feathers

  252. trying to impress God saying oh look at

  253. all these wonderful things I do he's

  254. full of himself he genuinely believes

  255. he's better than everyone else

  256. there verse 11 God I thank thank you

  257. that I am not like other

  258. men what a prayer to

  259. pray and what why can he get you this

  260. this this way of thinking that he is not

  261. like other men he's he's better than

  262. everyone how can he arrive at this

  263. conclusion one of the ways he does it is

  264. he points to certain sins that he hasn't

  265. done so he says I'm not a robber or an

  266. evildoer an adulterer and certainly not

  267. like that tax collector over

  268. there you know it's relatively easy

  269. isn't it to find sins that we haven't

  270. done and think well I I must be quite

  271. good then if I haven't done those things

  272. you know I'm certainly not like um I

  273. haven't cheated my benefits I haven't

  274. stolen anything I haven't covered up any

  275. Scandal I haven't blown anyone up I'm

  276. not like a pimp or a drug dealer I'm not

  277. an adulterer I'm not sexually confused

  278. you know I know what I am yeah I Thank

  279. God I'm a good person I'm a moral

  280. upright person a pillar of society I

  281. thank God for

  282. that it's possible for us to be so taken

  283. up with what we haven't

  284. done that we forget what we have done or

  285. at least what we were as

  286. well there's always going to be people

  287. worse than

  288. us we can always compare ourselves to

  289. other people and make ourselves look

  290. good but you you know it's not how we

  291. compare to other people that

  292. matters it's not other people's

  293. righteousness you have to live up to

  294. it's the righteousness of God he's

  295. perfect might look good but when you

  296. come and compare yourself to the

  297. righteousness of God you will always not

  298. make it it's the righteousness of God

  299. that counts he is the standard and you

  300. are not good enough he holds himself up

  301. to others and he can fool himself into

  302. thinking actually is a pretty good

  303. guy but he failing to see the reality of

  304. the situation the reality of the

  305. situation is God says in Romans 3:10

    Romans 3:10

  306. there is no one righteous not even

  307. one when I read that we agree don't we

  308. we go yes that's right yeah the world

  309. the church is full of Sinners thank God

  310. I'm not like

  311. that we kind of stand aside from it and

  312. forget to include ourselves in in in

  313. that

  314. sometimes anyway anyway this Pharisee

  315. he's still praying thanking God that

  316. he's not like other men pointing out

  317. their sin to God look look thank you God

  318. I'm not like them and then he starts to

  319. pray about the good things he has done

  320. he's offering up his good things to God

  321. because surely God will be pleased with

  322. that won he verse 12 I fast twice a

  323. week now this is way above what was

  324. required by the Mosaic

  325. law actually you really only need to to

  326. to fast about once a year on the day of

  327. a

  328. but he fasts twice a week that's amazing

  329. what a

  330. guy and he tithes all he has the law

  331. only required him to tithe certain

  332. things but he tithes everything that he

  333. has I mean this is a mega sort of

  334. religious bloke this is what ah he's

  335. fantastic isn't he he's a mega

  336. star and this can be a danger for so

  337. many of us thinking that perhaps God

  338. owes us because we've kept a few

  339. commands we've done some some good stuff

  340. or we've invented our own

  341. legalistic things to

  342. follow like you know don't do that don't

  343. do that on a Sunday don't play football

  344. don't watch TV you know or loads of

  345. things or you must do this we just pile

  346. all things into our religion and then

  347. when we we live up to our own rules we

  348. think well God must be really pleased

  349. with me

  350. you know or or maybe we we do great

  351. things like we we come to church

  352. brilliant we read our Bibles brilliant

  353. we we go to the church prayer meeting

  354. fantastic and maybe we volunteer we do

  355. all sorts of things and and most of

  356. those are really good and helpful but

  357. you know those things that we do they

  358. don't make us right with

  359. God this is where we we get so confused

  360. we sort of drift into it doing these

  361. things they don't make you right with

  362. God our religious performance our great

  363. feats of OB how many sacrifices they are

  364. not the

  365. basis on which we are made right and

  366. acceptable to

  367. God being miserable being a wet blanket

  368. as you put it that doesn't make you

  369. right with God we're told to rejoice in

  370. the lord always aren't we so just

  371. because someone is miserable and mean it

  372. doesn't mean they're

  373. holy so the question for us this morning

  374. is what are you trusting in for your

  375. standing before God what is it that you

  376. are holding up to God and saying this is

  377. why I'm acceptable to

  378. you do I think God must be pleased with

  379. me because I'm a pastor an elder a

  380. deacon a youth leader a member a cleaner

  381. a

  382. giver do we think well God of course God

  383. likes me because I was brought up in a

  384. Christian

  385. home I don't

  386. swear I give to charity I look after the

  387. vulnerable

  388. just to reemphasize let's be clear these

  389. things don't make us right with God I'm

  390. sure I'm sure you're getting it now but

  391. they do not make you right With God all

  392. those

  393. things

  394. Sinners that's what we are we need God's

  395. daily mercy and forgiveness but the

  396. Pharisee he's so taken up with his own

  397. goodness the things he's done he's done

  398. the things he hasn't

  399. done that he think he's forgotten who he

  400. really is

  401. he looked good to those around him the

  402. baddy the crook the nasty piece of work

  403. the tax collector we look at him in our

  404. second Point how to be

  405. justified well as we come to this guy we

  406. might think well maybe he wasn't that

  407. bad you know maybe he was just

  408. misunderstood but everyone listening to

  409. the story knew he was bad there was

  410. there was a reason that no one liked Tax

  411. Collectors back then they worked for the

  412. occupying power for Rome they inflated

  413. your tax bills to line their own pockets

  414. they were traitors they lied they

  415. cheated uh they were greedy they were

  416. selfish people had good reason to hate

  417. Tax Collectors with a

  418. passion so here is the undeniable baddy

  419. of the parable as the Pharisee walked to

  420. the temple no doubt he had been looking

  421. forward to it enjoying the walk being

  422. greeted by those that he passed knowing

  423. what to say how to act and everyone

  424. would go what a lovely guy there he is

  425. off to pray what a what a fantastic guy

  426. but what about the tax collector as he

  427. made his way to the temple it would be a

  428. different story for him there' be no

  429. springing his step no greeting him he'd

  430. be hiding hiding his face trying to get

  431. there without being

  432. noticed this scene Jesus paints shows us

  433. how he was feeling verse 13 He also

  434. stands for far off but it's not because

  435. he was too

  436. good he stands far off because he feels

  437. too bad he's ashamed of

  438. himself he's the worst of them he he

  439. knows everywhere he goes everyone's

  440. looking at him judging him they know who

  441. he is he knows who he is as he enters

  442. the temple he knows he doesn't fit in he

  443. doesn't fit in with all these good

  444. people he feels self-conscious he he

  445. feels a fraud to be there after all the

  446. temple the church that's for good people

  447. right that's for people who've made

  448. it how can he stand there with all these

  449. good people especially that disapproving

  450. Pharisee over there and he can't even

  451. look up to heaven and pray as others did

  452. he looks down he's beating his breast

  453. out of remorse and and shame about his

  454. dirty heart before

  455. God he's got no feathers to unfurl

  456. and show before that you just just you

  457. don't feel worthy to come before the

  458. Lord perhaps you don't even feel worthy

  459. to come into a place like

  460. this and yet you want to be made right

  461. with God you want to know his

  462. forgiveness can it be can it be that God

  463. could forgive someone even like

  464. you if you've ever felt the

  465. shame of your sin then the gospel is

  466. good news for you listen listen to the

  467. pray praise this a simple genuine humble

  468. prayer one of my favorites in the Bible

  469. verse 13 at the end it says God be

  470. merciful to me a sinner isn't that so

  471. simple he can only plead for

  472. mercy God I'm I'm no good turn aside

  473. from your wrath towards me cleanse me

  474. blot out my sin be favorable towards me

  475. he's not trying to excuse himself is he

  476. he not Lord would you just understand

  477. how hard it's been for me he's not

  478. trying to blame others I had a bad

  479. upbringing my friends are leading me

  480. astray or my life is just been rubbish

  481. and he's not comparing himself to others

  482. Lord I know I've been bad but have you

  483. seen them over

  484. there actually the Greek here it's not a

  485. sinner it's the

  486. sinner at this point it doesn't really

  487. matter what anyone else has done or

  488. hasn't done this is this is a moment

  489. between him and God God is is the

  490. righteous

  491. one and he is the

  492. sinner so he pleads for

  493. Mercy I wonder if you've ever prayed a

  494. prayer like

  495. this if you were a Believer the chances

  496. are you pray it quite

  497. often when God brings to your attention

  498. some area of

  499. rebellion when you fallen into sin again

  500. when you didn't do what you knew you

  501. should when you didn't speak when you

  502. knew you should when you spoke when you

  503. should have held your

  504. tongue when your thoughts went somewhere

  505. they really shouldn't when you lost your

  506. temper when you were

  507. selfish when you were

  508. impatient when you weren't

  509. kind when your pride rears its ugly head

  510. head

  511. again don't we come back to this

  512. prayer oh God have mercy on me The

  513. Sinner I wonder if you've ever prayed

  514. that

  515. prayer so only when we humble ourselves

  516. and give up parading our goodness before

  517. God and man and ask for God's mercy that

  518. we get

  519. it I said that there was a punch line a

  520. sort of punch line to this Parable and

  521. here it is the meticulous lawke keeping

  522. law in inventing religious guy he's not

  523. made right with

  524. God he goes home still in his sin he

  525. might look good he might believe he is

  526. good but he left in his sin because he

  527. refused to Humble himself and come and

  528. ask for mercy and so he doesn't get

  529. Mercy but the despised lowlife tax

  530. collector the baddy he humbles himself

  531. he asks for mercy and God gives him

  532. mercy so it's the sinner who goes uh

  533. home made right with God not the

  534. religious man it's the one who trusted

  535. in God and not in himself who is saved

  536. and this is such good news for those of

  537. us who are aware of our

  538. sin this is such an amazing message for

  539. us for our community for our sinful

  540. world isn't it no matter what you've

  541. done no matter how low you've

  542. gone no matter how wonderfully good you

  543. might

  544. be we all alike are invited to come to

  545. the throne of Mercy to come to Jesus to

  546. confess your sin and the good news is

  547. you will find

  548. Mercy you will find forgiveness and you

  549. will be declared Not Guilty by God

  550. himself this is the amazing good news of

  551. the

  552. Gospel two men two prayers but only one

  553. went home forgiven when you go home

  554. today I wonder whether you will be one

  555. whom God says they are not guilty or

  556. whether you'll still be in your

  557. sin the difference is one of you will

  558. have sought Mercy the other

  559. words well Luke follows up this account

  560. with another that builds uh on what

  561. we've just learned it's our final Point

  562. how to enter the kingdom of

  563. God when important dignitaries um visit

  564. much of their time is taken up with

  565. meeting other important people so I

  566. don't know if Donald Trump's planning a

  567. visit to the UK but when he if he does

  568. he won't be meeting people like you and

  569. me perhaps you'll be relieved about that

  570. perhaps you'll be disappointed I don't

  571. know uh but uh if he does come here

  572. he'll be meeting the other important

  573. people but what about when the Son of

  574. God comes to Earth who does he meet does

  575. he just come to meet with the important

  576. people

  577. well it seems when Jesus was walking on

  578. the earth the parents were eager to get

  579. Jesus to bless their children verse 15

  580. they were bringing babies or or young

  581. toddlers to Jesus now in those days the

  582. status uh the standing of children was

  583. pretty low they were almost treated as

  584. second class

  585. citizens so similar to the parable where

  586. it's assumed that God isn't for the tax

  587. collector is for the important religious

  588. person here we might assume that Jesus

  589. is not for little children unimportant

  590. people like that he's just for important

  591. grown-ups and adults like

  592. us that's what the disciples were

  593. thinking Jesus isn't for these children

  594. they're not important surely the Messiah

  595. has come for the important

  596. grownups and so they get annoyed when

  597. all the parents are bringing their

  598. children uh to Jesus and getting in the

  599. way but that's not the way Jesus sees it

  600. is it he loves the children in fact did

  601. you notice verse 16 Jesus Calls the

  602. children to him says children children

  603. children Aon did that last week children

  604. come here come here

  605. yeah he calls the children to him isn't

  606. that wonderful not only does he allow

  607. them to come I suppose I better let them

  608. come he calls them to himself and he

  609. warns the disciples don't hinder

  610. them as

  611. parents as a

  612. church we need to ensure we're not

  613. hindering our children from coming to

  614. Jesus but more than that is that we need

  615. to be bringing our children to Jesus so

  616. so what does that look like well it

  617. includes things like we need to be

  618. praying with them we need to be reading

  619. our Bibles with them we need to to be

  620. making our faith a normal part of life

  621. we need to be modeling what it looks

  622. like to follow Jesus how do they know

  623. what a Christian life looks like well

  624. because they can look at you and say I

  625. can see how mom lives I can see how dad

  626. lives I can see how Grand lives that

  627. helps help me understand what it means

  628. to follow

  629. Jesus bringing your children to to Jesus

  630. includes bringing them to to church and

  631. I think in light of what Jesus says we

  632. do need to think carefully if we are

  633. regularly taking our children away from

  634. church or to other things I know it's

  635. hard in our culture there's Sports there

  636. there's all sorts of things that get in

  637. the way but I just think we need to

  638. think this this through to act

  639. wisely we need to bring our children to

  640. meet with the Lord and his people don't

  641. hinder them coming to me says Jesus and

  642. for the rest of us I know I know

  643. children are noisy aren't they they tear

  644. around the church banging into us they

  645. cry they disrupt they get in the way and

  646. you think oh Crums all these children

  647. like dear me we thank the Lord for them

  648. but then we get annoyed with them don't

  649. we and yes I think we do need to control

  650. our children for their own safety and

  651. the safety of others but this is what

  652. being a part of God's family is like

  653. isn't it bearing with one another in

  654. love like whatever the needs whatever it

  655. is you know the the the young the noisy

  656. those with special needs you know we

  657. bear with one another in love we're a

  658. family of

  659. God and what's going on out there on a

  660. Sunday morning is not to be seen as

  661. child minding or

  662. babysitting hopefully I'm sure they are

  663. these children are being brought to

  664. Jesus they been being taught the B Bible

  665. our children are precious to Jesus and

  666. we need to do all we can as parents as

  667. grandparents as a church to bring them

  668. to

  669. Jesus that doesn't mean that everything

  670. that we ever do is all about the

  671. children that's not not what he's saying

  672. at all but they are part of of the

  673. church and we must be mindful not to

  674. hinder them coming to Jesus they may not

  675. have the same voice and opinion as

  676. grown-ups but they have the same

  677. need that is to know Jesus

  678. in fact Jesus uses young children to

  679. teach a fundamental truth about how to

  680. enter the kingdom of God so verse 16

  681. halfway througho not hinder them for to

  682. such belongs the kingdom of God to such

  683. what does that mean well to children to

  684. to the childlike to those who are like

  685. children now that doesn't mean we're all

  686. to start having tantrums and naps and

  687. drinking our milk out of bottles and

  688. being childish so so in what way are we

  689. to be like

  690. children the key is in verse 17 he says

  691. whoever does not receive the kingdom of

  692. God like a child shall not enter it

  693. Jesus is speaking about how we enter

  694. into the

  695. Kingdom so just for a second picture the

  696. newborn baby just been born and they

  697. they're just sort of just coming out of

  698. hospital they don't try start trying to

  699. pay their mother for the milk do they

  700. that would be absurd they can't do that

  701. you just it's Unthinkable they don't try

  702. start trying to pay their their dad for

  703. the petrol money for taking them home

  704. from hospital that's just that's

  705. ludicrous you can't do that they don't

  706. start trying to prove that they're

  707. worthy to be accepted in this into the

  708. family they've just been born

  709. into nothing nothing doesn't even go

  710. through their heads they can't they just

  711. what children do they receive don't they

  712. that's all they can do they've got no no

  713. other ability to do anything else they

  714. receive and everything they have

  715. everything theyve given is a gift

  716. and that's what Jesus is saying that's

  717. what we are like before God all we can

  718. do is receive what Jesus has done on the

  719. cross for us and he's done all that is

  720. required to save you all that is left

  721. for you to do is to trust him and

  722. receive it trusting is is another way

  723. that we we should be like children so

  724. young children are often trusting they

  725. trust their parents until they learn

  726. other wise sadly in some cases but they

  727. instinctively they trust their parents

  728. and of course we have to teach them

  729. children I'm really sorry you can't

  730. trust all grown-ups you know some

  731. sometimes you you just you

  732. can't but in that same childlike way we

  733. are to trust Jesus It Is by Faith by

  734. trusting in Him and what he's done on

  735. the cross that we are

  736. saved this is how we can be made right

  737. with God this is how we enter into the

  738. kingdom of God as a a baby cries out for

  739. milk so we cry out for Mercy that's how

  740. we're saved we never grow out of this

  741. this is why it's one of my favorite

  742. prayers because no matter how much you

  743. advance in

  744. Christianity no matter how Sanctified

  745. and holy you

  746. become no matter how respected and

  747. educated and gifted you might be if you

  748. ever reach the point where you imagine

  749. you had graduated from from needing

  750. God's mercy that is exactly the point

  751. you need to get on your knees and ask

  752. for Mercy because none of us get beyond

  753. the point of needing God's mercy we will

  754. never outgrow

  755. it so as we close have you have you ever

  756. confessed your sin and stopped trusting

  757. in

  758. yourself have you ever put your faith in

  759. Jesus asked for mercy and humbly

  760. received what he did on the cross to

  761. save you

  762. when we come in simple childlike trust

  763. our father is pleased to give us Mercy

  764. to forgive us and bring us into a right

  765. relationship with himself perhaps

  766. there's someone here who needs to pray

  767. that prayer for the first

  768. time perhaps there's someone here who

  769. needs to come again lay aside those

  770. other things you've been trusting in and

  771. ask for the Lord's Mercy once again it's

  772. so simple isn't it God have mercy on me

  773. the sinner let's be quiet before the

  774. Lord perhaps you need to pray that

  775. prayer right now
