  1. It's lovely, isn't it? The sun's out.

  2. It's in my eyes. We can't see the

  3. projector, but it'll be great. It'll be

  4. fantastic. So, welcome in the name of

  5. the Lord Jesus Christ to this service of

  6. ordination and induction for Aaron

  7. Scott. Uh my name is Matt. I'm the lead

  8. pastor here. Um and a special welcome to

  9. Dan Dwelli as well we've invited to

  10. preach today. He's the pastor at Christ

  11. Church Tilehurst. Uh Dan has been

  12. influential in Erin's path to ministry

  13. who's actually also at Bible College the

  14. year above me um as well. So there's a

  15. couple of links there. So welcome.

  16. Um just a few practicalities. If you've

  17. got a phone, please do uh turn it to

  18. silent. Now, if you want to take out

  19. your phone and take pictures at any

  20. point, that's absolutely fine. Send them

  21. to Aaron. I'm sure he'd be delighted to

  22. have a record of uh this afternoon. So,

  23. take a few pictures throughout the

  24. service. That's fine. After the service,

  25. there will be refreshments. Probably the

  26. best thing is if we go in that door,

  27. there's a a row of tables. Work your way

  28. around and then come back through that

  29. door and sit down and have fellowship.

  30. So, that will be a lovely time of

  31. refreshments afterwards. The toilets are

  32. out those doors. And there's a toilet

  33. there. There's a toilet there. There's a

  34. toilet as you came in through the

  35. entrance as well. If you brought your

  36. children as well, that's fantastic. If

  37. they make a bit of noise, don't worry

  38. too much. I'm sure that's fine. If you

  39. feel uncomfortable, you think, I need to

  40. escape. Um, there is a room just

  41. throughout those doors and you can sit

  42. there and the service should be relayed

  43. there. Or there's a quiet room, a crash

  44. room, you can go in through there as

  45. well. Well, this is a wonderful day

  46. which we can recognize God's

  47. faithfulness and his mercy to us as

  48. God's people here and to Aaron and

  49. Sophie as well and leading them to this

  50. point. So, let's commit our time to the

  51. Lord in prayer.

  52. Oh, Father God,

  53. you are truly awesome.

  54. And Lord, we want to come before you

  55. this afternoon acknowledge and

  56. acknowledging that this is all about

  57. you. Lord, it's not because we have done

  58. anything special. It's not because we

  59. are in any particular way special. We

  60. are just a group of mainly believers

  61. here

  62. saved by your grace, brought to this

  63. point by your grace. And Lord,

  64. therefore, we look to you for this is

  65. all about you. This is your church. We

  66. belong to you.

  67. Father, we want to commit the whole of

  68. this service to you. We pray for your

  69. blessing. We pray for your help. This is

  70. a serious occasion, but it's a joyful

  71. occasion. So Lord, may all we do honor

  72. Jesus and be a blessing to one another

  73. here. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.

  74. Well, we're going to stand to sing our

  75. first song. His mercy is more. will

  76. stand when the music starts.

  77. wrongs we have done all

  78. the way

  79. from

  80. without

  81. our sins they How many his mercy is

  82. patience with as we constantly

  83. tend

  84. the He is the highest of all.

  85. Our sins they are many. His mercy is

  86. praise the Lord.

  87. His mercy is

  88. strong.

  89. everyone

  90. our sins and our his mercy is

  91. fores of kindness he

  92. His

  93. life was

  94. gather

  95. his mercy is

  96. praise the Lord.

  97. His mercy is

  98. stronger than darkness

  99. every

  100. his mercy is more.

  101. His mercy is

  102. stronger darkness

  103. everyone.

  104. Our sins they are ready. His mercy is

  105. more. Our sins they are ready. His mercy

  106. is

  107. well Richard, one of our elders and

  108. Aaron's father-in-law is going to come

  109. and read from the scriptures to us. If

  110. you can turn in your Bibles to Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  111. chapter 4, Richard will be reading from

  112. verse 4. Thank you, Richard.

  113. Afternoon

  114. everyone. Ephesians 4. So we're going to

  115. be starting at verse 4. I'll be reading

  116. till verse 16.

  117. There is one body and one spirit. Just

  118. as you were called to the one hope that

  119. belongs to your call. One Lord, one

  120. faith, one baptism, one God and Father

  121. of all, who is over all and through all

  122. and in all.

  123. But grace was given to each one of us

  124. according to the measure of Christ's

  125. gift. Therefore, it says, "When he

  126. ascended on high, he led a host of

  127. captives, and he gave gifts to men."

  128. In saying he ascended, what does it mean

  129. but that he had also descended into the

  130. lower regions, the earth,

  131. he who descended is the one who also

  132. ascended far above all the heavens, that

  133. he might fill all things.

  134. And he gave the apostles, the prophets,

  135. the evangelists, the shepherds and

  136. teachers to equip the saints for the

  137. work of ministry for building up the

  138. body of Christ until we all attain to

  139. the unity of the faith and of the

  140. knowledge of the son of God, to mature

  141. manhood, to the measure of the stature

  142. of the fullness of Christ, so that we

  143. may no longer be children tossed to and

  144. fro by the waves and carried about by

  145. every wind of doctrine, by human

  146. cunning, by craftiness in deceitful

  147. schemes.

  148. Rather speaking the truth in love, we

  149. are to grow up in every way into him who

  150. is the head, into Christ, from whom the

  151. whole body joined and held together by

  152. every joint with which it is equipped

  153. when each part is working properly makes

  154. the body grow so that it builds itself

  155. up in love.

  156. Thank you, Richard. Well, the word of

  157. God teaches us that the ascended Lord

  158. Jesus gives pastor teachers to his

  159. church, as we've just read from

  160. Ephesians chapter 4. Let me repeat some

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  161. of those verses for you. It was he who

  162. gave some to be apostles, some to be

  163. prophets, some to be evangelists, and

  164. some to be pastors and teachers to

  165. prepare God's people for works of

  166. service so that the body of Christ may

  167. be built up.

  168. Now this service is both an ordination

  169. and an induction.

  170. Ordination speaks of setting aside a man

  171. uh for pastoral ministry and induction

  172. refers to the setting apart of a pastor

  173. to a particular local church. And today

  174. we are doing both.

  175. The duty of a pastor is to be a faithful

  176. undersheperd of that part of the great

  177. shepherd's flock that has been entrusted

  178. to his care.

  179. What are his duties? Well, there's at

  180. least three. So, firstly, he is to feed

  181. the flock by faithfully teaching the

  182. word of God in all its breadth and depth

  183. and applying it to the particular needs

  184. of the congregation in which he serves.

  185. Secondly, a pastor is to care for the

  186. flock by prayer and the exercise of

  187. pastoral care and that does include uh

  188. pastoral discipline too. Thirdly, he is

  189. to lead the flock, lead them forward

  190. with the other elders in a lifestyle in

  191. service and evangelism by example and

  192. exaltation.

  193. Since we believe it is God who calls men

  194. into this kind of ministry, it's

  195. important that we hear how God has

  196. called Aaron into this ministry, how he

  197. called him to himself in the first

  198. place, too. So, Aaron's now going to

  199. come and share his testimony and the

  200. call to ministry. Thank you.

  201. >> Well, thank you all for being here.

  202. uh blessed with Christian parents,

  203. blessed by faithful ministry at Kerry

  204. Baptist Church where I grew up, uh

  205. blessed by a good CV primary school, the

  206. truth about God and the stories of the

  207. Bible were ever present in my life.

  208. It was at the age of 11, confronted with

  209. the reality of my own mortality through

  210. the death of a close family friend, that

  211. I put my faith in Jesus to save me from

  212. my sins.

  213. And John 3:16 was a verse that had been

    John 3:16

  214. imprinted on my mind. And the Lord was

  215. pleased to use those words that are so

  216. familiar to many of us to draw me to

  217. God. For God so loved the world that he

  218. gave his one and only son that whoever

  219. believes in him shall not perish but

  220. have eternal life.

  221. I realized that though I knew all the

  222. Bible stories, because of my sin, I was

  223. in danger of facing the judgment of God

  224. in hell when I died.

  225. But God sent his son so that I can be

  226. saved simply by putting my faith in him.

  227. I cannot make myself good enough for

  228. God.

  229. He has made me good enough through his

  230. son and his death on the cross and his

  231. resurrection.

  232. But I struggled.

  233. My Christian life from that point

  234. forward would see great high points in

  235. the year, particularly in a field in

  236. Wales under canvas during CCIW camp.

  237. The Christian life would make sense and

  238. feel easy surrounded by other young

  239. people who love Jesus.

  240. But when I would get home, it was so

  241. much harder. My life was not shaped by

  242. the gospel that I believed in in the way

  243. it should have been. As much as I would

  244. argue with my friends at school about

  245. the Christian faith, my life did not

  246. reflect my faith.

  247. It was in one such argument that I was

  248. challenged on whether I'd actually read

  249. the whole of the Bible. And I realized

  250. that I hadn't. And so I thought, well,

  251. if I'm going to fight my corner, I

  252. better get on and read it. And so I read

  253. the Bible in a year, which was hard.

  254. But God mightily used his word to shape

  255. me and change me.

  256. much of it I I didn't understand,

  257. but the truth about who God is and in

  258. particular how he is an absolute control

  259. of all things captured me.

  260. Uh that summer when I was 15, I went to

  261. CCIW camp again. I've been praying a lot

  262. about what I should pick for my A levels

  263. that was supposed to be happening within

  264. the next few months.

  265. and sat at the back of one of the

  266. evening meetings listening to the

  267. preacher. I remember and it's a hard

  268. feeling to describe and difficult to put

  269. into words, but feeling suddenly

  270. overwhelmed and delighted by a thought.

  271. I am supposed to do what the person at

  272. the front is doing. I'm supposed to

  273. teach the Bible.

  274. I can't express that feeling fully, but

  275. it certainly felt as though it hadn't

  276. come from me. It felt as if it had come

  277. from God. And it was very confusing.

  278. I love my home church, Kerry Baptist,

  279. deeply, but it was a rare day when I saw

  280. overt expressions of joy and happiness

  281. in the people around me. But there I was

  282. in the back of a meeting full of joy and

  283. confused. I didn't know what to do.

  284. uh leaving the meeting that evening, the

  285. sun was just setting in the way that

  286. those of you who've been in that field

  287. know that it can. An amazing formation

  288. of clouds, the sun just shining through

  289. it. An utterly beautiful sight. It

  290. lasted only for a moment.

  291. But in that moment, the truth that I'd

  292. been reading and hearing in God's words

  293. that God is in control of everything

  294. came home to me in a new way and really

  295. settled in my heart. I knew it was no

  296. accident that each water droplet that

  297. had evaporated in just the right place

  298. and gathered together in the clouds at

  299. just that time that the person who was

  300. preaching went on for just the right

  301. amount of time so that I would leave the

  302. meeting and see what I saw and know God

  303. saying to me through a beautiful sunset,

  304. I am in control.

  305. God reminded me of that. He called me to

  306. teach the Bible and it felt like a huge

  307. deal and I had no idea what to do with

  308. that feeling. But he told me, "I'm in

  309. control."

  310. I was filled with a desire to understand

  311. the Bible better, to be able to teach

  312. it, to be useful to God, to be part of

  313. making disciples for Jesus. And I really

  314. didn't know what to do. And God provided

  315. in another way. uh in his amazing

  316. control which as Christians we call

  317. God's providence uh Dan Dwelli was

  318. called to back Kerry Baptist Church as

  319. assistant pastor. It was the September

  320. after the August when I'd been on camp

  321. and during the service Dan spoke about

  322. his some of his journey into ministry

  323. and lots of things clicked.

  324. After the service I went straight up to

  325. him and asked if we could meet up and

  326. talk about it possibly slightly

  327. overwhelming. Yeah. Dan welcomed me into

  328. his life. We met up. We talked about the

  329. Bible. We prayed together. The

  330. foundations of my faith deepened. Uh

  331. even as I still wasn't sure about what

  332. it would mean to be someone who taught

  333. the Bible.

  334. Uh I took a a gap year after I did my A

  335. levels. I spent three months in China as

  336. an English teacher. And then Kerry, my

  337. home church, they ran and still do

  338. evangelistic um Bible teacher, I'm

  339. sorry, English classes. Uh so I got

  340. involved in that as well. and I applied

  341. to work at the church working with

  342. internationals as an apprentice.

  343. The elders there wisely decided that it

  344. would be good for me uh to go elsewhere

  345. to be an apprentice, somewhere where I

  346. wasn't known, where I would be stretched

  347. and challenged in ways that would help

  348. me to discover where my gifting was. And

  349. so I ended up in Bristol as a ministry

  350. trainee in Pandennis Good News Church,

  351. where for two years I got stuck into

  352. life as a member of a much smaller

  353. church than the one I grew up in. It was

  354. there that I preached my first sermon,

  355. had plenty of corners knocked off me,

  356. and began theological training. First

  357. off with the ministry training course in

  358. Bath, which I know many of you have

  359. done. And then I began a 4-year

  360. theological training course run by the

  361. Evangelical Movement of Wales.

  362. I carried that on when I then moved to

  363. another church in Bristol, Bradley

  364. Stoke, to work as a pastoral assistant.

  365. and working so closely with the pastors

  366. in both of those churches, God showed me

  367. that what mattered most was not just my

  368. sense of calling to teach the Bible, not

  369. just that feeling I had in the back of a

  370. tent in in Mid Wales. The most important

  371. thing was that I do his will in all of

  372. my life. Uh to not just be someone who

  373. obeys God in the churchy bits of life,

  374. but in all my friendships, the way I

  375. managed my money, my time, my thoughts,

  376. and my actions. The good news that Jesus

  377. died and rose again is not just that I

  378. can be saved from hell. It's that I can

  379. enjoy a living relationship with God.

  380. But begins now and goes on for eternity.

  381. Uh I worked really hard during COVID.

  382. Without close friends, I would have

  383. broken much quicker than I did.

  384. But I did break.

  385. The second round of lockdown in

  386. particular was very painful.

  387. At the same time, I was being given very

  388. wise advice that I should get some

  389. experience doing work somewhere other

  390. than a church for a while. But I didn't

  391. always take that advice well.

  392. In fact, I saw it as a direct challenge

  393. to what I thought God had called me to

  394. do. And I entered a period of time when

  395. my mind was a mess. My priorities were

  396. all mixed up. My identity had become I'm

  397. the guy who does ministry, not I am a

  398. child of God.

  399. That was a message I preached many times

  400. myself.

  401. I got a job as a teacher at a mayor

  402. school part-time in September 2021 and

  403. by the end of the October I made the

  404. decision to leave Bristol. Uh Bradley

  405. Stoke Evangelical Church had just

  406. changed my job title to minister in

  407. training. They committed to supporting

  408. me uh for another few years but I I

  409. couldn't carry on.

  410. I thought back on that time on CCIW, sat

  411. in the meeting full of a sudden joy and

  412. certainty that I was supposed to do what

  413. the guy at the front was doing. And

  414. leaving Bristol, I thought I'd failed.

  415. I thought that might be it. That my time

  416. in ministry was behind me and I'd have

  417. to find something else to do.

  418. Through the love and support of my new

  419. church, North Bradley Baptist Church,

  420. and particularly through the help of my

  421. now in-laws,

  422. I was able to rest working as a

  423. part-time teacher and part-time as a

  424. waiter in a pub.

  425. Through a painful process of healing, my

  426. identity became rooted again in Jesus.

  427. Even if at times I wrongly felt

  428. humiliated to be taking food orders and

  429. washing dishes, God was in control.

  430. I didn't know where I would end up, but

  431. he graciously fixed me.

  432. Sophie and I got married.

  433. During our marriage prep, uh I had was

  434. approached by the elders about whether I

  435. would consider some part-time work with

  436. the church here. And I really wasn't

  437. sure.

  438. I thought it might be too soon, if too

  439. much, to ever come back to ministry. But

  440. God was in control.

  441. We spent a few months at KFrey Church

  442. where Sofh was finishing a year as a

  443. ministry trainee. And then in January

  444. 2024, I was appointed as traininee

  445. pastor here at North Bradley Baptist

  446. Church.

  447. Uh it was at my sixth month review, a

  448. review that I actually nearly slept

  449. through. Sorry, Matt and Phil.

  450. It was at that review that I realized

  451. that preaching the word, the care of the

  452. flock, the sharing of the gospel and

  453. prayer was what God was calling me to

  454. commit my life to again with all that

  455. involves

  456. uh to seek to grow in holiness and

  457. obedience to his commands to live a life

  458. worthy of the gospel while keeping my

  459. identity rooted not in what I do but in

  460. what Jesus has done.

  461. And at the end of a time of uh prayer

  462. and fasting in April last year, Sofh and

  463. I felt confident in the decision to

  464. pursue the role of associate pastor here

  465. at North Bradley Baptist Church. To God

  466. alone be the glory.

  467. Oh, thank you Erin for for sharing that.

  468. Um it's not easy to stand here and sort

  469. of bear your soul, but it was

  470. encouraging to hear. So thank you. Uh

  471. these times are almost um seem like a

  472. wedding, don't they? There's there's a

  473. sort of how we Aaron met us and in a

  474. moment we're going to hear how we met

  475. Aaron. Phil's going to in a in a moment

  476. he'll come and share from the church's

  477. perspective. But before we do that,

  478. we're going to sing another hymn, When

  479. Peace Like a River. So we'll stand to

  480. sing when the music starts.

  481. When

  482. I

  483. when

  484. I He will th

  485. it is Well,

  486. my soul with my soul.

  487. It is well

  488. with my soul.

  489. I should

  490. be

  491. in my

  492. sh

  493. my soul.

  494. It is well

  495. my soul.

  496. My soul.

  497. It is well. It is well with my soul.

  498. I sing all the

  499. glorious

  500. I

  501. praise the Lord. Oh, praise the Lord,

  502. my soul.

  503. Is well. It is well with my soul.

  504. My soul. It is well. It is well with my

  505. soul.

  506. He is Christ. He is Christ.

  507. He shall

  508. shall be

  509. glory

  510. to my soul

  511. with my soul. Oh my soul. It is well. It

  512. is well

  513. my soul.

  514. My heart is for you. For your

  515. we

  516. are

  517. all angel

  518. bless

  519. my soul. Oh,

  520. well

  521. my soul with my soul. It is well

  522. with my soul.

  523. The day when my face shall be I

  524. shall res

  525. and

  526. shall be

  527. even

  528. with my soul.

  529. Heat. Heat. Heat.

  530. is well

  531. with my soul.

  532. >> Well, praise the Lord for that.

  533. >> Um, Phil's now one of the elder is his

  534. elders here. He's going to come and just

  535. share the testimony of the church and uh

  536. from our perspective how the call of

  537. Aaron took place. So, thank you, Phil.

  538. Hi everyone. Lovely to see you here.

  539. Thanks for coming.

  540. So I've been given a task of explaining

  541. some of the background as to how the

  542. church here came to call Aaron as a

  543. pastor. And uh as I was thinking over

  544. this um I feel it really is quite

  545. remarkable that we are doing this uh as

  546. a church. Um, it's an evidence of God's

  547. great kindness and grace to us that for

  548. the first time in the church's history,

  549. we're in a position to have two

  550. full-time pastors in permanent paid

  551. positions. And it's especially

  552. remarkable if you consider that between

  553. 1932 and 1979, a period of 67 years, uh,

  554. that the church was not even able to

  555. employ one full-time minister. the

  556. pastors we had over this long period

  557. were always either part-time or shared

  558. with another church. So it really is uh

  559. wonderful for us that we are having this

  560. ordination service today and I think we

  561. have to acknowledge that we've seen

  562. God's abundant kindness and blessing to

  563. us as a congregation recently especially

  564. in the five in the past five years under

  565. Matt's ministry here. Uh the membership

  566. has increased by over a third in this

  567. period. Uh we've seen many people

  568. baptized, eight people in the last year

  569. alone. Uh and our finances are in a much

  570. healthier position uh than we've known

  571. in recent years. It actually I'd suggest

  572. that the background to us calling Aaron

  573. to the pastor here is a further evidence

  574. of God's abundant kindness and blessing

  575. to us. It wasn't that we had a vacancy

  576. to fill and needed to search out an

  577. unknown person to fill the gap. Instead,

  578. God brought Aaron into the church

  579. family. and we came to know him and love

  580. him before any conversation or thought

  581. of a paid position was on the cards.

  582. Uh looking back, I think it's fair to

  583. say that as a church, we first became

  584. aware of Aaron in about 2016 or 2017

  585. when Katherine met him on the ministry

  586. training course in Bath. Uh he came to

  587. preach a couple of times in the

  588. following years and it was at this time

  589. that Aaron would have first met Sophie

  590. too.

  591. Now um you'll remember the difficult

  592. COVID years when we were unable to meet

  593. face tof face uh or run many of our

  594. ministries. But it was over this period

  595. that we got to know Erin much better. He

  596. was leading an online youth work for

  597. local churches that some of our

  598. teenagers participated in. And I

  599. remember in March 2021 recording a video

  600. interview with Sophie of her testimony

  601. that was broadcast at that youth

  602. gathering. Uh, and as it happened, a few

  603. months after this, Aaron and Sophie

  604. started dating. And that's when Aaron

  605. went from being a visitor to being a

  606. real part of our church family.

  607. It was at the end of 2022 that we as

  608. elders first discussed whether there was

  609. any scope for us to employ Aaron in a

  610. part-time capacity in the church. Uh we

  611. were aware that God had gifted him

  612. greatly and that our church could be a

  613. helpful environment for Aaron to step

  614. back into a ministry role and further

  615. develop his gifts. Um Matt met with

  616. Aaron about this. Um and we shared our

  617. thoughts with the church members shortly

  618. afterwards over the coming months. As

  619. Erin's already said, he got married. Um

  620. he preached here several times and a

  621. vote was held in November 2023 with the

  622. agreement to employ Aaron as a part-time

  623. trainee pastor for two days a week for a

  624. period of two years to commence in

  625. January 2024.

  626. As church we greatly benefited from

  627. Erin's gift in preaching, music and

  628. youth work over this period. Uh Erin sat

  629. in on the elders meet meetings and as a

  630. leadership team we were impressed with

  631. the contributions he brought to our

  632. meetings and the humility he display

  633. displayed in being willing to listen

  634. well and not dominate.

  635. By the end of 2024, Erin's paid hours at

  636. the church had increased to two and a

  637. half days per week. Uh and I was meeting

  638. with Aaron on a fairly regular basis to

  639. discuss and pray about his future. Uh my

  640. desire, and I know I wasn't alone in

  641. this, was for Aaron to remain in the

  642. church in a full-time capacity after the

  643. two-year period came to an end. Uh but

  644. there were several obstacles in this,

  645. including whether the church as a whole

  646. shared this same desire and whether the

  647. necessary finances were in place.

  648. uh on Erin's part, he needed to weigh up

  649. other opportunities and decide where he

  650. and Sophie could be of most use.

  651. Over the coming months, it became

  652. apparent that our church finances were

  653. in good shape. Uh and there was an

  654. overwhelming desire within the church

  655. membership to appoint Aaron as an elder.

  656. Uh Aaron came to a settled conviction

  657. over that Easter period that it would be

  658. right for him to pursue a full-time

  659. position at the church. And so at our

  660. July 2025 members meeting, the proposal

  661. was put to the members to appoint Erin

  662. Scott as a full-time associate pastor

  663. and elder. Uh the church members voted

  664. unanimously in favor of that res

  665. resolution and Erin started in a

  666. full-time capacity from September.

  667. Uh we've really benefited from having

  668. Erin and also more recently John Brett

  669. joining the eldership here and we're

  670. thankful for your continued prayers for

  671. the church and for Aaron and Sophie over

  672. these last few years. Thank you.

  673. Well, Jesus set aside his 12 disciples

  674. for their ministry. Similarly, the

  675. apostles set aside the first group of

  676. deacons by laying hands on them. Was an

  677. act that symbolized not only their being

  678. set apart for ministry, but also their

  679. need for and and promise of God's

  680. blessing and help for the work he had

  681. called them to do. And Paul is clear

  682. that elders are to be uh appointed in

  683. every church. And so we come now to set

  684. Aaron apart and appoint him to this work

  685. that he's been called to.

  686. But first, um before we go much further,

  687. I just need to clarify one thing. See,

  688. Aaron, bless him, gets called all sorts

  689. of different things. Now, I'm not

  690. talking about childish insults like

  691. goofy, smelly, or hairy. as appropriate

  692. as some of those might be um often

  693. people do refer to him as Aaron and uh

  694. it's just something that happens and I

  695. remember meeting with Aaron a guy and I

  696. said right his his name's Aaron and the

  697. guy continued to call him Aaron and we

  698. said is but he couldn't so so I I just a

  699. little simple thing as we're having this

  700. service here I think we need to practice

  701. so when you think of Aaron think of air

  702. the stuff you breathe okay you're

  703. breathing air and you turn a light on.

  704. So, air on sort of, right? If you say it

  705. too much, it starts to sound a bit

  706. weird, but let's just have a practice,

  707. right? 1 2 3 Aaron. 1 2 3.

  708. >> Fant Aaron, do you want to come up here?

  709. Cuz they're calling for you.

  710. So, at these um these sorts of services,

  711. sorry. At these sorts of services, it is

  712. uh sort of customary to ask a few

  713. questions. We'll be asking you some

  714. questions. will be asking the uh

  715. congregation some questions as well. So

  716. uh Erin, we've heard how the Lord called

  717. you to the work of pastoral ministry in

  718. this local church. And in order that the

  719. importance of this solemn responsibility

  720. may be clearly understood, I will now

  721. ask you these questions in the presence

  722. of God and the congregation.

  723. So do you believe in one God, father,

  724. son, and holy spirit? And do you

  725. personally confess Jesus Christ as your

  726. savior and lord?

  727. >> I do.

  728. >> Do you believe the scriptures of the Old

  729. and New Testaments to be the word of God

  730. and the only infallible rule of faith

  731. and conduct?

  732. >> I do.

  733. >> Do you wholeheartedly and without

  734. reservation affirm your belief in the

  735. doctrines of the Christian faith as laid

  736. out in the FIC State of Faith?

  737. >> I do.

  738. Do you believe that God has truly called

  739. you to this pastoral work in this local

  740. church?

  741. >> I do.

  742. >> And do you promise to fulfill your

  743. charge faithfully teaching,

  744. praying for, and caring for this

  745. church's spiritual needs?

  746. >> With God's help, I do.

  747. Do you promise to be faithful in prayer

  748. and in the study of God's word and to

  749. live in such a way both publicly and

  750. privately as to be an example to all?

  751. >> By God's grace I do.

  752. >> Okay. Sophie, do you want to join us um

  753. for this next question? This next uh one

  754. is for you. So Sophie, you have heard

  755. the commitment which Aaron has just

  756. made. Do you promise to encourage and

  757. support your husband as he seeks to

  758. exercise his ministry in this church and

  759. in this community?

  760. >> I do.

  761. >> Okay. It's almost like we're getting

  762. married, isn't it? It's wonderful.

  763. Right. I'll I'll let you sit down for a

  764. second. You'll be rejoining us now. But

  765. uh now this is for the the church, the

  766. congregation here. Uh they're going to

  767. ask you four questions. If you agree

  768. with this, the response is we do.

  769. So, do you receive Aaron whom you have

  770. called to be associate pastor of this

  771. church?

  772. >> We do.

  773. >> Do you promise to receive the word of

  774. truth from him with meekness and love

  775. and to submit to his leadership when

  776. discipline is required?

  777. >> We do.

  778. >> Do you promise to encourage him in his

  779. heavy responsibilities and to assist him

  780. as he labors for your instruction and

  781. spiritual growth? We do.

  782. >> And do you promise to do all you can to

  783. care for his practical needs and comfort

  784. among you for the honor of God?

  785. >> We do.

  786. >> Okay, I think that's enough of the

  787. questions. Now, um this next part I'm

  788. going to require the elders to come up

  789. the front here. Uh so elders, do you

  790. want to join me? And uh we've agreed

  791. that Aaron will kneel at this point. Um,

  792. you won't see him do this very often,

  793. but here we go. Do you want to kneel on

  794. the floor? This is just a sign of uh the

  795. the serving uh role that you're going to

  796. be taken. Um, elders, if you want to

  797. gather around and lay your hands upon

  798. him.

  799. So Aaron, in the name of the Lord Jesus

  800. Christ, the head of the church, and in

  801. recognition of the gifts and calling of

  802. God, God God has given to you, we lay

  803. hands on you and set you apart to the

  804. pastoral ministry, and we also declare

  805. you to be inducted as associate pastor

  806. of this church.

  807. You can clap if you like.

  808. Now, whilst it is the elders who lead

  809. the church, we recognize that our wives

  810. are often deeply involved in many of the

  811. aspects of our ministry. They provide us

  812. with help, support, encouragement,

  813. advice, and sometimes a timely word in

  814. the air.

  815. and being the wife of an elder or pastor

  816. does have a major impact. And so it

  817. seems only right that we invite um

  818. Sophie up to stand beside uh Aaron as we

  819. pray for him. And we're also going to

  820. invite the elders wives to come and join

  821. us as well. If you like to come into the

  822. middle somewhere, we're again uh lay our

  823. hands upon you. And uh when we're all

  824. assembled, Walter will lead us in

  825. prayer.

  826. Let's pray.

  827. Heavenly Father, we just come before you

  828. with uh thankful and uh rejoicing

  829. hearts. Lord, uh we've heard the way in

  830. which you have led um both the church

  831. and Erin and Sophie to this point and we

  832. just thank you, Lord. And we would now

  833. just commit them into your loving care.

  834. Lord, we just lift them up before you as

  835. they begin this ministry. Lord, pray

  836. that you would watch over them and

  837. protect them. We pray you would keep

  838. them, Lord, as a couple and bless their

  839. life together. We pray Lord God that as

  840. they uh go into the work of this

  841. ministry Lord that you would keep them

  842. humble as they see you bless their

  843. ministry and Lord that you will give

  844. them grace Lord to bear with those times

  845. uh when the things seem to be a

  846. struggle. We pray you'll protect them

  847. from the evil one who always seeks to

  848. disrupt and destroy your work. And but

  849. Lord that they would know in their

  850. hearts that the one who is in them is so

  851. much greater than he who is in the

  852. world. Pray you will protect them, Lord,

  853. from the attacks of the evil one. Pray

  854. they would be aware, Lord, and supported

  855. and beared up by the prayers of the

  856. people of this fellowship. And uh Lord,

  857. that you would just uh help them and

  858. keep them in your word that they might

  859. be thoroughly equipped for every good

  860. work here in this place.

  861. >> And Lord, we commit them into your

  862. loving care. Lord, would you bless them

  863. and keep them? Would you make your face

  864. to shine upon them and be gracious to

  865. them and grant them your peace because

  866. we ask it in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen.

  867. Amen. Right, everyone can take their

  868. seats now. That's uh wonderful.

  869. Okay, so in a moment we're going to sing

  870. another song, another hymn, Preachers of

  871. the God, Preachers of the God of Grace.

  872. And then uh John will come and uh give

  873. us our reading straight afterwards. And

  874. he'll also pray. Then Dan Dwelli will

  875. come straight up and uh preach for us.

  876. So, we'll stand to sing when the music

  877. starts

  878. graing.

  879. with the Lord for all my

  880. way

  881. show

  882. of your rightousness.

  883. Thankful.

  884. God

  885. for your holy name.

  886. What you have done

  887. here

  888. with the Oh

  889. sh

  890. and joy.

  891. and

  892. all his

  893. Christ

  894. of the Lord

  895. and

  896. crazy

  897. still.

  898. I am when we

  899. all

  900. your churches

  901. your Glory

  902. as

  903. Christ.

  904. Good afternoon. If you've got a Bible

  905. with you, um, open it, um, to

  906. Colossians, um, chapter 1, and we're

  907. going to be reading from verse 24, um,

  908. down to Colossians chapter 2 and verse

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  909. 7.

  910. So Colossians chapter 1 and starting at

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  911. verse 24.

  912. Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your

  913. sake and in my flesh I am filling up

  914. what is lacking in Christ's afflictions

  915. for the sake of his body that is the

  916. church of which I became a minister

  917. according to the stewardship from God

  918. that was given to me for you to make the

  919. word of God fully known the mystery

  920. hidden for ages and generations but now

  921. revealed to his saints

  922. to them God chose to make known How

  923. great among the Gentiles are the riches

  924. of the glory of this mystery which is

  925. Christ in you, the hope of glory.

  926. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and

  927. teaching everyone with all wisdom that

  928. we may present everyone mature in

  929. Christ. For this I toil, struggling with

  930. all his energy that he powerfully works

  931. within me.

  932. For I want you to know how great a

  933. struggle I have for you and for those at

  934. Leodysa and for all who have not seen me

  935. face to face. That their hearts may be

  936. encouraged being knit together in love

  937. to reach all the riches of full

  938. assurance of understanding and the

  939. knowledge of God's mystery which is in

  940. Christ in whom are hidden all the

  941. treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

  942. I say this in order that no one may may

  943. delude you with plausible arguments.

  944. For though I am absent in body, yet I am

  945. with you in spirit, rejoicing to see

  946. your good order and the firmness of your

  947. faith in Christ.

  948. Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus

  949. the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and

  950. built up in him and established in the

  951. faith, just as you were taught,

  952. abounding in thanksgiving.

  953. Let's come before the Lord and just

  954. pray.

  955. Thank you, Lord God, for your precious

  956. words. And Lord, as we meet this

  957. morning, it's so appropriate that we are

  958. reading and hearing from your word this

  959. afternoon even that that we may

  960. that that we may we may be rooted and

  961. grounded um in in this Lord in in in the

  962. truth that you give us in the the the

  963. the

  964. just the the life that we can have

  965. through your living and powerful word.

  966. Lord, we thank you for we thank you for

  967. this this time and we can we can we can

  968. be together and we can we can witness

  969. Aaron and um the way that you have

  970. brought him to this point. Um the

  971. different paths that you've you've

  972. you've prepared for him to walk in his

  973. life and and will prepare for him. um

  974. bringing him here um bringing him and

  975. safely together. Bringing him into um

  976. into the ministry of of of your word

  977. into being a pastor. And Lord, we thank

  978. you that we can just be here today. We

  979. can we can witness this and we can um we

  980. can we can celebrate your goodness in

  981. bringing him this far. And we and we do

  982. pray for Erin and for Sophie and pray

  983. that you would you would be with them in

  984. in all the different paths of life that

  985. um that that you will cause them to walk

  986. through whether the high points or the

  987. low points that they would know you with

  988. them and that they would be able to

  989. trust you in in the midst of those. And

  990. Lord, we pray that as we come and hear

  991. your word um that you would speak to us.

  992. You be with Dan as he preaches in a few

  993. moments time. Um, and Lord, you would

  994. fill in with your spirit to do your work

  995. in our hearts here today. For we pray in

  996. Jesus's name. Amen.

  997. >> Amen.

  998. It's a tremendous joy and privilege to

  999. be with you this morning. Even just for

1000. the singing. It's been fantastic to hear

1001. you singing this morning. So, thank you

1002. uh this afternoon. We What? It's so

1003. weird, isn't it, doing we're not used to

1004. doing this on a Saturday afternoon. What

1005. are we doing this afternoon? All right,

  1006. there we are. Yes, it's a a great

1007. privilege to be here to address you uh

1008. this afternoon on this very special

1009. occasion. Special personally, as you've

1010. heard, uh because it's a joy to see my

1011. friend Aaron. Uh you've really

1012. confusing. I've got to really doubly

1013. think about it, haven't I? Um, in this

1014. special I mean, my my memory here, how

1015. could I sum up Baron back then? It's

1016. basically a slightly grumpy old man

  1017. trapped in a young p person's body.

1018. That's basically um and it it seems

  1019. nothing's changed probably.

1020. Um, but it's been a good 15 years, maybe

1021. something like that. to see you set

1022. apart for ministry today is is is so

1023. thrilling, but it's also super special

1024. for you as a church. It really, really

1025. is. And we've heard a bit about that

1026. today. Now, we've heard some sobering

1027. words already spoken to Aaron and by

1028. Aaron today. I hope just to bring one

1029. more word really that I hope will

  1030. encourage, maybe inspire, maybe

1031. orientate us a little bit as we continue

1032. together uh as Christ's body.

1033. Lots of people have mission statements,

1034. don't they, for their lives. Uh,

1035. companies have a mission statement

  1036. sometimes. Churches have mission

1037. statements, too. Here in Colossians 1,

    Colossians 1:28

  1038. verse 28, I think we have maybe Paul's

1039. aim in life and ministry in a very

1040. simple phrase. Simple so that Aaron can

1041. remember it. All right. What does he

  1042. say? him we proclaim.

1043. Sometimes people ask me what my job is

1044. and I tell them that I'm a pastor and

1045. then they tell me, "Well, what does that

1046. mean?" Um, and I you know what that

1047. involves and and if if it wasn't too

1048. obscure for them, I would say something

1049. like this. My job is to proclaim him.

1050. The summation of everything Paul

1051. preached and taught, making fully known

1052. the word of God, as he says in verse 25,

  1053. was simply Jesus Christ.

1054. He is the message. He is the means for

1055. ministry. He is the goal of all we do.

1056. Erin, may I submit to you that this is

1057. the one thing that God has really set

1058. you apart for today to proclaim Jesus.

1059. Make it your whole ambition, your whole

1060. work, your whole life to proclaim

  1061. Christ.

1062. If we were to sort of slightly tweak it,

1063. maybe broaden it even more and simply

1064. say, "Your aim is to bring people to

  1065. Jesus."

1066. Bring people to Jesus in your preaching,

1067. in your pastoral care, in your marriage,

1068. with your neighbors, in your community.

1069. Bring people to Jesus. That is the

1070. heartbeat of Christian ministry. It's

1071. what Paul lived for and suffered for and

1072. is what he is calling us all to, not

  1073. just Darren. today.

1074. And let me show you three reasons why

1075. bringing people to Jesus should be so

1076. central to your life and our life and

1077. ministry. Firstly, Aaron, bring people

1078. to Jesus because he's the one we all

  1079. need.

1080. Look how Paul describes his ministry in

1081. verse 24. says, 'Now I rejoice in my

1082. sufferings for your sake, and in my

1083. flesh I am filling up what is lacking in

1084. Christ's afflictions for the sake of his

1085. body, that is the church, of which I

  1086. became a minister, a servant according

1087. to the stewardship from God that was

1088. given to me for you to make the word of

1089. God fully known. Paul had been called by

1090. God, to make the word of God fully

1091. known. And I think he sums up what that

1092. word is. Verse 27 tells us, "God chose

1093. to make known how great among the

1094. Gentiles are the riches of the glory of

1095. this mystery, which is Christ in you,

  1096. the hope of glory."

1097. The mystery, it's been revealed. The

1098. essence of all that God's word is about

1099. is this, Christ in you, the hope of

1100. glory. And then comes verse 28. Him we

  1101. proclaim. Simple really.

  1102. But why?

1103. Well, one thing Colossians draws out

1104. back in chapter 1 verse 18 is because

1105. well, God thinks it's all about Jesus.

1106. He He wants Jesus to be preeminent. He

  1107. says supreme.

1108. God thinks it's about the son. But more

1109. than that, we proclaim Jesus because

1110. Jesus is the one we need.

1111. first because Jesus is the revelation we

1112. need. I mean, think again about what

1113. Paul has already told us in the book of

1114. Colossians. We didn't read this, but

1115. back in verse 15 tells us, I mean,

1116. amazingly, Jesus is the image of the

1117. invisible God. That's what it says. He

1118. is the revelation of God. You know, for

1119. centuries, uh, humanity has been groping

1120. in the darkness, wondering, is there a

1121. God? What might he be like? Philosophers

  1122. have speculated.

1123. Religions have offered their best

1124. guesses. But in Jesus, at last, God can

1125. be truly known. And when you see Jesus,

1126. you see God himself. He's a revelation.

1127. Aaron, bring people to Jesus because in

1128. him they will encounter God.

1129. Secondly, bring people to Jesus because

1130. Jesus is the savior we need. Again, all

1131. through Colossians, look back at verse

1132. 13 of this chapter. He says, "He has

1133. delivered us from the domain of darkness

1134. and transferred us into the kingdom of

1135. his beloved son in whom we have

1136. redemption, the forgiveness of sins. We

1137. are enslaved to sin and we need to be

1138. set free. We are held captive in the

1139. darkness. We are condemned in our

1140. rebellion. But Jesus, he's the redeemer.

1141. He's the one who paid the price for our

1142. freedom. He's the one who can forgive

1143. us, who wipes the slate clean. He's the

1144. rescuer who brings us into the light.

  1145. It's again verse 20.

1146. Uh Jesus is there the reconciler who

1147. makes peace through his blood shed on

1148. the cross. He presents us holy and

1149. blameless and above reproach before him.

1150. Aaron when broken, battered, guilty,

1151. wicked people come to you. Take them to

1152. Jesus who can cleanse, who can forgive,

1153. who can reheal, who can restore. Who

1154. else has shed their blood for our sin?

1155. Who else has conquered the grave? Who

1156. else has slain Satan? Only Jesus. Bring

1157. them to Jesus because he's the savior we

1158. need. Thirdly, because he's the teacher

1159. we need. He's the teacher we need. Verse

1160. 18 says he's the head of the body, the

1161. church. He's the Lord of our lives, the

1162. master of the church. And he shows us

1163. then. He teaches us and leads us in the

1164. way of real life and hope. Chapter 2

1165. verse three Paul will say that in Christ

1166. are hidden all the treasures of wisdom

  1167. and knowledge.

1168. Everything we need for life is found in

1169. him. Jesus is the one who makes sense of

1170. everything and makes sense of the world.

1171. Erin, when people come to you anxious

1172. and confused, troubled, tossed about in

1173. life, trying to make sense of things,

1174. bring them to Jesus, the truth, who

1175. teaches us, who shows us the way things

1176. really are in the world. Jesus is the

1177. one we need because he's the revelation

1178. of God. He's the savior for sinners.

1179. He's the teacher for our very lives.

1180. You may have heard me share this with

  1181. you before, Erin. I can't quite

1182. remember, but there's a lady in my

1183. church. She's about 15 years of age, and

  1184. she's endured a brutal life, abusive

  1185. relationships. She's got a disfigured

1186. face from a violent partner, an eating

  1187. disorder, shattered self-worth.

1188. When we met her, she was too afraid to

  1189. leave her house.

1190. But we began reading the Bible with her.

1191. We told her about Jesus. And after a few

1192. sessions, I asked her, "What do you

  1193. think of Jesus?"

1194. And without hesitation, and I'll never

1195. forget this, she said, "Oh, I want him.

  1196. I want him."

1197. And a few months later, we were able to

1198. baptize her. She didn't know anything

1199. about God or the Bible.

1200. But when she encountered Jesus, she knew

  1201. he's the answer.

  1202. She didn't find a self-help program. She

1203. didn't find her own truth. She found a

1204. person, the son of God, who died to free

1205. her from her sin and shame and

1206. brokenness. She needed Jesus. And when

1207. she found him, she found everything.

1208. And oh Aaron, that's what we want when

1209. we present Christ in such a way that

  1210. people realize,

1211. yeah, I want him. That's our aim.

1212. Eron, give your people here Jesus

1213. because he's the one they need the most.

1214. Give them Jesus in your preaching. Open

1215. the scriptures and show them Christ on

1216. every page. Give them Jesus in your

1217. pastoral care. Point them to the Savior

1218. who who understands their pain and

1219. carries their burdens. Give them Jesus

1220. in your leadership. Shepherd them as an

1221. undersheperd of their chief shepherd.

1222. Because when they encounter Jesus, they

1223. encounter God himself. When they find

1224. Jesus, they find grace for their souls.

1225. When they follow Jesus, they find a

1226. shepherd for their life. When they see

1227. Jesus in the scriptures, they see

  1228. everything rightly.

1229. The church, the church here. This is

1230. this is your mission, too, isn't it?

1231. Isn't it? To bring people to Jesus,

1232. your neighbors, your colleagues, your

1233. family members. Don't you know how much

1234. they need him? Don't you know how much

1235. you need him? Bring people to Jesus

1236. because he's the one we truly need.

1237. Secondly, Aaron, bring people to Jesus

1238. because he's the one who transforms us.

1239. He's the one who transforms us, not you.

1240. You'll find this painfully in ministry

1241. sometimes. How much you wish you could

1242. just grab someone and shake it out of

1243. them or shake it into them. Well, no, we

1244. can't. Only Jesus can transform. Look at

  1245. verse 28 again.

1246. him we proclaim, warning everyone and

1247. teaching everyone with all wisdom that

1248. we may present everyone mature in

1249. Christ. Here's the the goal the goal of

1250. bringing people to Jesus. It's total

  1251. transformation.

1252. Chapter 1 vers 22 says something similar

1253. here. It's Jesus doing the work, right?

1254. You have been reconciled to his in his

1255. body of flesh by his death in order to

1256. present you holy and blameless and above

1257. reproach before him. So the goal here is

1258. nothing less than being transformed into

1259. the image of Jesus, conformed to the

1260. image of the son, as Paul says elsewhere

1261. in Romans, to be presented holy,

1262. blameless, above reproach, mature in

  1263. Christ.

1264. And and how does this transformation

1265. happen? If that's the goal, what's the

1266. means? Verse 28 again, through warning

1267. everyone and teaching everyone with all

  1268. wisdom.

1269. warning or or or admonishing is

1270. necessary so that people don't lose

  1271. their way. I it's a guard rails on a on

1272. a narrow mountain road and faithful

1273. pastors must warn God's people about

1274. false teaching about patterns of sin

1275. compromising with the world and so on.

1276. It's also teaching. Teaching is giving

1277. people all that Christ has commanded us.

1278. Jesus said this in Matthew 28. Go

1279. therefore and make disciples of all

1280. nations, teaching them to observe all

1281. that I have commanded you. That's the

1282. systematic instruction in the whole

1283. council of God. And it's done with all

1284. wisdom because well, we know life is

1285. complicated. People are complicated. And

1286. the skilled pastor must take the

1287. unchanging truth of scripture and apply

1288. it uh wisely to the varied situations of

  1289. people's lives.

1290. That's the goal. That's the means. And

1291. there's a process here too. Look at

1292. chapter 2 verse 6. Therefore, as you

1293. received Jesus, Christ Jesus the Lord,

1294. so walk in him, rooted and built up in

1295. him, and established in the faith, just

1296. as you were taught, abounding in

1297. thanksgiving. C. Can you see there?

  1298. Rooted, built up, established.

  1299. There's a organic growth there, but

  1300. there's also sort of a solid

1301. construction going on as a tree sinks

1302. its root roots deeper into the soil. a

1303. building that's constructed brick brick

1304. by brick on a firm foundation and it's

1305. all as we walk in him there's a process

1306. it's a constant thing keep coming back

1307. to Jesus daily drinking from this well

1308. feasting at his table never move on from

1309. Jesus the goal is becoming like Christ

1310. the means is the teaching and warning of

1311. Christ and the process is walking with

  1312. Christ.

1313. Imagine uh a couple of orphans

1314. begging on the street in rags

1315. until along comes a loving father and he

1316. he overwhelmed with compassion for them

1317. and he says, "Come, no, you come home

1318. with me." And he adopts them into his

1319. family. But it turns out he happens to

  1320. be like a a bajillionaire. A and they

1321. now live in this grand mansion. They

1322. have warm beds to sleep in. They've got

1323. kitchens full of food. They've got um

1324. clothes in wardrobes and so on. They

  1325. have everything there.

1326. And that night they go to bed and they

1327. they wake up the next morning and uh

1328. they look at each other and they think,

1329. "Well, what are we going to do today?

1330. What what can we do?" "Oh, I know." So

1331. they say and they put on their old rags

1332. again and they go downstairs and they go

1333. out the door down the long driveway out

  1334. the gates

  1335. and start begging again.

  1336. The father comes by.

1337. He says, "What are you doing? This this

1338. isn't you anymore. No, you're my beloved

1339. children now. This is not where you

  1340. belong."

  1341. And the children say,

1342. "But we don't know how to live any

1343. differently. This is all we've known. We

  1344. don't know how."

1345. And then the father says, "Well, here

  1346. look,

  1347. here's your big brother. You've got a

1348. new big brother, my beloved son. He'll

1349. show you. Follow him. He'll show you how

1350. to live my way in my house.

1351. follow him. That that is really

  1352. Christian disciplehip, isn't it? We've

1353. been adopted into a new family. We've

1354. got a new way to live now, but we don't

1355. know how. But God has given us his son,

1356. Jesus, who can show us the way, our big

1357. brother, who's right there alongside us.

1358. Erin, this is what you're called to do.

1359. Keep bringing people to their big

  1360. brother, Jesus,

1361. so that he can transform them through

  1362. your warning and teaching. You're you're

1363. helping former orphans learn to live as

1364. beloved children. So you're part of the

1365. process of presenting everyone mature in

  1366. Christ. So church,

1367. you need to receive this ministry. He

1368. Hebrews 13:17 says, "Obey your leaders

    Hebrews 13:17

1369. and submit to them for they are keeping

1370. watch over your souls as those who will

1371. give an account." When your pastors warn

1372. you, listen. When they teach,

  1373. learn. When they show,

1374. imitate. Don't resist the transformation

1375. God wants to work in your life.

1376. And look, come with it. Look at

  1377. Colossians 3:16.

    Colossians 3:16

1378. What does it say there? Colossians 3:16.

    Colossians 3:16

1379. Let the word of Christ dwell among you

1380. as a church richly teaching and

1381. admonishing one another in all wisdom.

1382. There's the same idea. You're all to be

  1383. doing this.

1384. This isn't just the pastor's job. You

1385. all need to be doing this for one

1386. another, helping each other follow Jesus

1387. more faithfully. Come, let's go to our

1388. big brother Jesus. He'll show us the

  1389. way.

1390. brings people to Jesus because he's the

  1391. one who transforms us.

1392. And thirdly, and finally, Erin, and here

  1393. it gets personal. Okay?

1394. Take yourself to Jesus because he's the

  1395. one you need, too.

1396. Look at the end of verse 29 of chapter

1397. 1. For this, I toil, struggling with all

1398. his energy that he powerfully works

1399. within me. It goes on chapter 2 verse

1400. one. For I want you to know how great a

1401. struggle I have for you. Christian

  1402. ministry is costly.

1403. It requires toil. It involves struggle.

1404. Paul uses the Greek word agon where we

1405. get the word agony from. It's the

1406. language of an athlete straining every

  1407. muscle. It's a it's a soldier fighting

1408. for his life. Ministry isn't always a

1409. comfortable career. It's not a job you

1410. kind of clock in and out of. It's a

1411. calling that demands everything you

  1412. have.

1413. You will suffer for Christ in this

  1414. ministry.

1415. You know this. There'll be sleepless

1416. nights praying for your people. There'll

1417. be heartbreak when people walk away.

1418. There'll be opposition and criticism and

1419. misunderstanding. There will be times

1420. when you pour yourself out and see

1421. little fruit. There will be spiritual

1422. warfare and physical exhaustion and

  1423. emotional depletion.

1424. And Paul knew this in two Corinthians.

1425. He says that ministry is when you die so

  1426. that others can live.

1427. But may it be so. May we die, Aaron, a

1428. little bit so that Christ might be

1429. lifted up. I must decrease so that

1430. Christ must increase. That's the way.

1431. He says in verse 24 of our passage, "Now

1432. I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake

1433. and in my flesh I am filling up what is

1434. lacking in Christ's afflictions for the

1435. sake of his body that is the church."

1436. Now what's Paul saying here? Was was

  1437. Christ's sacrifice somehow lacking

1438. something? Was it insufficient? Now

1439. that's not what he's saying. He was

1440. saying that as Christ's body, the church

1441. continues his mission in the world, we

1442. will continue to experience suffering

1443. just as Christ did. So, so Christ

1444. suffered, but there was more suffering

1445. to come that his church would

1446. experience. And so, we we we take up our

1447. cross and we follow him.

1448. So, Erin, here's the crucial question

1449. then. How can you ever think or hope to

1450. sustain that kind of ministry? How can

1451. you toil and struggle and suffer without

1452. burning out, without becoming bitter,

  1453. without giving up?

  1454. The answer's right there, isn't it?

1455. Verse 28 again, uh 29, sorry, with all

  1456. his energy

1457. that he powerfully works within me.

1458. You cannot serve Christ without Christ's

1459. power. You cannot give what you don't

1460. have. You cannot lead people to Jesus if

1461. you're not going to Jesus yourself.

1462. This is why you need strong a strong

1463. personal relationship with Christ. You

1464. need to be rooted in him as your

1465. personal savior. Remembering daily that

1466. you're not saved by your ministry. Your

  1467. identity isn't there. And you've been

1468. learning this lesson over the years,

  1469. haven't you? It's not your success. It's

1470. not your performance. It's not your

  1471. giftedness.

1472. Christ and his grace alone.

1473. You need to know him as the Lord of your

1474. life. Submit yourself to his wisdom.

1475. Follow his leading. Trust his timing.

1476. He's your big brother, too.

1477. You need to be someone who communes with

1478. God in prayer and the word, not just to

1479. prepare a sermon, but to nourish your

  1480. own soul.

1481. You need to be someone who rests in

  1482. Christ's sufficiency,

  1483. not your own strength.

1484. Because Erin, if you if you try to

1485. minister in your own power, you're going

1486. to fail. You'll run dry. You'll collapse

1487. under the weight. But if you minister in

1488. his energy that he powerfully works

1489. within you, you'll find supernatural

  1490. strength for supernatural

  1491. work.

1492. Aaron, take yourself to Jesus

1493. because you need him, too.

1494. And church, look, this is where you come

  1495. in.

1496. Bring your pastor to Jesus.

  1497. He's not Christ.

1498. Christ is the one you need, but he's the

1499. servant of Christ for your sake. So pray

1500. for him, encourage him, support him,

1501. remind him of the gospel when he's

1502. weary. Point him back to Jesus when he's

  1503. discouraged. Don't put him on a

1504. pedestal, but don't tear him down

1505. either. Honor him as one who labors

  1506. among you.

1507. So Erin, as you begin this ministry,

  1508. make this your aim.

1509. Proclaim him. Bring people to Jesus

1510. because he's the one we all need. The

1511. revelation of God, the savior of

1512. sinners, the Lord who gives us hope.

1513. Bring people to Jesus because he's the

1514. one who transforms us into his image.

1515. And take yourself to Jesus because he's

1516. because he's the one you need, the

1517. source of power that works within you.

  1518. Notice verse 24

1519. and also in chapter 2 verse four and

1520. five here Paul talks about rejoicing in

1521. this kind of ministry. There's joy in

1522. ministry like this in the riches of

  1523. Christ's

1524. the riches of Christ is is joy

  1525. unspeakable.

1526. Where else could you go?

1527. Who else would you want to live for than

  1528. Jesus?

1529. And and surely, Erin, if if you do this,

  1530. you won't go far wrong, I don't think.

1531. And above all, it'll be Christ who

1532. receives the glory. If you make it all

1533. about Jesus, he'll surely be the one

  1534. that is glorified.

1535. Aaron, North Bradley Baptist Church,

  1536. bring people to Jesus.

1537. Proclaim him. Amen. Let's pray together.

1538. We praise and thank you, oh Lord, our

1539. father, for giving us your one and only

1540. son, Jesus. Because in him we find a

1541. revelation. We find salvation. We find

1542. life through him. We enjoy the the hope

  1543. of glory

1544. in Jesus. We uh receive the presence and

1545. power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

1546. Our God in heaven. We praise you

  1547. for him.

1548. Make us people of Jesus who are obsessed

1549. with Jesus, who are all out for Jesus,

1550. who live for him. May we be people too

1551. who bring others to Jesus. We pray for

1552. our brother Aaron that he would uh take

1553. this calling deep into his own heart and

1554. life. We thank you for the evidence of

1555. this already over these years. But Lord,

1556. may as he goes from here, may he live a

1557. life of this kind of work and ministry

1558. among your people here. And let this

1559. church, we pray, be a beacon of Jesus.

1560. May they lift up the living Christ

1561. so that many would be drawn to him.

1562. Hear our prayer in Jesus name. Amen.

1563. We're going to sing a final song now.

  1564. And uh classic, a gooden. I don't know

1565. if you can guess what it is, but it's in

1566. Christ alone. We're going to stand as we

  1567. sing that together.

  1568. In Christ alone

  1569. my hope is found.

1570. He is my life, my strength, my soul is

1571. for my soul. is solid

  1572. se my

  1573. love of Christ I

1588. since I lost his rib on me. For I am his

  1589. and he is mine

1590. with the precious blood of Christ.

1591. This is the power of Christ in meus

  1592. Christ.

  1593. Jesus Christ.

  1600. >> Let's pray as we close.

1601. >> Jesus, we would proclaim you.

1602. We would show the world you.

1603. And we ask, Lord God, ask for myself

1604. that you'd help me to take these words

1605. in your Bible to heart. I pray that for

1606. each one of us here, too. And Lord,

1607. would you bless our fellowship now?

1608. Thank you for time we can spend

1609. together. Lord, would you keep us safe

1610. on our journeys as well? Wherever we've

1611. come from, wherever we're going to,

1612. Lord, we look to you for for blessing in

1613. that way, for traveling mercies. But

1614. Lord Jesus, may you have the glory.

  1615. Amen.
