  1. Um some sometimes when you're preparing

  2. a sermon uh sometimes it's uh really

  3. hard work and you think crumbs this is

  4. hard work and it doesn't seem to flow

  5. and you think oh dear what am I going to

  6. do but other times you come to a passage

  7. and it just like oh this is really

  8. exciting and this was one of those

  9. passages it's been a real blessing to me

  10. uh to be able to prepare and uh I hope

  11. it will be a blessing to you to to

  12. listen to. So let let's commit ourselves

  13. to the Lord.

  14. Father God, we thank you uh for this

  15. passage. Lord, we thank you for the

  16. wonderful truths that we see in it.

  17. Lord, we thank you that we see how the

  18. Lord Jesus Christ believed in the

  19. resurrection. And Lord, we pray that

  20. this would become more real to us as we

  21. think about these things this morning.

  22. Lord, that we would be encouraged and

  23. strengthened and spurred on as we think

  24. about these things. So Lord, help us. I

  25. pray in Jesus name. Amen.

  26. Okay. Right.

  27. Um I don't know if you've ever been in a

  28. conversation

  29. uh with someone and you just feel like

  30. your Christian beliefs

  31. just sound a bit silly when you sort of

  32. speak them out out loud. in our modern

  33. scientific world to think about heaven

  34. and hell and the afterlife,

  35. it just it just seems a bit strange

  36. sometimes.

  37. But of course, if you think about it,

  38. the fact that there is anything in

  39. existence at all, well, that is pretty

  40. miraculous

  41. to begin with. Either you have to

  42. believe that there's some kind of big

  43. bang that brought about some sort of

  44. ignition from nothing and created

  45. everything from nothing.

  46. An explosion that somehow didn't destroy

  47. things that created stuff.

  48. I mean, that seems bonkers to me. That

  49. seems like that's a lot of faith you

  50. have to exercise to believe that. So

  51. either you have to believe that or

  52. something else similar or you believe

  53. there is an intelligent creator God.

  54. And I don't know about you, but the the

  55. concept of design seems to me to be

  56. built into everything we know and

  57. experience. I walk into my house, I sit

  58. in my study, I'm surrounded by things

  59. that have been intelligently designed.

  60. That makes sense to me. It didn't just

  61. happen.

  62. So, so we've got these two things, you

  63. know, big bang or creation. But whatever

  64. side of those things we find ourselves

  65. believing, we have to accept

  66. both of those approaches are well out of

  67. our everyday approach to life. You know,

  68. God creating things or evolution or

  69. whatever. These are both almost bonkers

  70. things. You think, I just I can't get my

  71. head around that. How did that happen?

  72. and they they they take faith.

  73. Either scenario is out of our everyday

  74. experience, is out there, is not normal,

  75. it's beyond our comprehension. But if we

  76. believe

  77. that creation happened because of an

  78. intelligent God, a creator God, then

  79. actually to believe in things like

  80. heaven and hell and the afterlife and

  81. all those kind of things, it's not

  82. actually that hard to do because if God

  83. is God, then God is God and that's it.

  84. He can do whatever he wants. If he says

  85. this is how it is, that's how it is.

  86. It's not actually a problem.

  87. Since atheists have no compelling

  88. explanations for the first cause of

  89. creation of how it all began, actually

  90. perhaps we as Christians

  91. shouldn't be too quick to feel like the

  92. truth of the Bible is something that we

  93. need to be ashamed of because actually I

  94. think it makes good sense of everything

  95. that we see and experience and I think

  96. is more believable than the

  97. alternatives.

  98. But there have always been skeptics and

  99. those who like to poke fun at the truth

  100. of the Bible. And that's nothing new

  101. because these Sadducees here, they were,

  102. that's what they were doing, trying to

  103. make belief in the afterlife look

  104. ridiculous. They were trying to make the

  105. idea of heaven seem

  106. silly.

  107. So let's look at their argument in our

  108. first point, an unsettling argument.

  109. you know, when I um let people know or

  110. when I meet people and they find out I'm

  111. a pastor, um often they're quite

  112. confused about what that means. Uh and

  113. they say, "Yeah, I'm a pastor of a

  114. Baptist church." And they they what does

  115. that mean? And they get very confused. I

  116. think people inside the church and

  117. outside the church about all the

  118. different denominations that we have,

  119. Catholics, Protestants, Anglicans,

  120. Pentecostals, Brethren, Methodists,

  121. Quakers, Presbyterians, Baptists, and so

  122. on. It's as if the church has spent its

  123. time throughout history finding

  124. different ways we can disagree and then

  125. dividing over them.

  126. And many people are confused. So, what

  127. do you believe? You know, do you wear

  128. you have to wear special gowns and sorts

  129. of things? Is that is that? And I'm

  130. like, "No, no,

  131. there's a lot of confusion." But that's

  132. nothing new because wherever there are

  133. people, there are differences of

  134. opinions.

  135. Back in first century Judaism, there

  136. were three main schools of thought or

  137. factions. There were the Pharisees, who

  138. we're probably a little bit more famili

  139. familiar with, the Sadducees, and the

  140. Essins.

  141. It's the Sadducees we're concerned with

  142. today. Now, we don't actually know an

  143. awful lot about them. They were

  144. priestly,

  145. aristocratic.

  146. They were wealthy people. And they seem

  147. to hold more tightly or more highly to

  148. the Pentich.

  149. That was something they sort of regarded

  150. more higher than the Old Testament,

  151. although there's some conflicting uh

  152. thoughts about whether that's true or

  153. not. But they seem to hold the first

  154. five books of the Bible more highly than

  155. the rest. And as Luke points out here in

  156. verse 27, there came to him Jesus, some

  157. Sadducees, those who deny there is a

  158. resurrection.

  159. And um that's that's why they were sad,

  160. you see, because they didn't believe in

  161. the resurrection.

  162. Oh dear. Right. Never mind. Right. Okay.

  163. Well, Luke also gives us a a further

  164. insight in Acts 23:8 about these sad

    Acts 23:8

  165. people. For the Sadducees say that there

  166. is no resurrection, nor angel, nor

  167. spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge

  168. them all. So you can see there's a

  169. difference there. They're not believing

  170. in the resurrection. That is a defining

  171. distinctive for them. So after the

  172. Pharisees, we looked at this last week.

  173. After the Pharisees have failed to trap

  174. Jesus with the tax trap, the Sadducees

  175. step up. Hold my beer. We've got this.

  176. We are going to get Jesus.

  177. So whereas church is divided over issues

  178. around the Lord's supper, baptism,

  179. liturgy, governance and so on, for them

  180. they were dividing over the resurrection

  181. and spiritual existence. And they were

  182. going to take Jesus to task on this. To

  183. do so, they have concocted an extreme

  184. example to really make their point. It's

  185. hyperbole. They begin by grounding their

  186. argument in the Torah. So verse 28,

  187. Moses wrote for us and they quote from

  188. Deuteronomy chapter 25:5

  189. and they refer to what was known as the

  190. Leverite marriage. And basically that

  191. was if a man died without leaving an

  192. heir uh then the brother would have to

  193. step in and marry her in order to

  194. provide an heir for the dead brother who

  195. would be brought up in his name to carry

  196. on the family legacy.

  197. It was rare apparently for this to

  198. actually happen and by New Testament

  199. times it had pretty much died out. It

  200. wasn't actually practiced anymore. So

  201. this question they're posing to Jesus is

  202. is academic. It wasn't really happening

  203. on a day-to-day basis if at all at that

  204. point. It was designed to prove that the

  205. law of Moses did not anticipate this

  206. resurrection. That is the thrust of

  207. their point here. Moses did not

  208. anticipate the resurrection. And so they

  209. paint this almost comical picture of a

  210. woman who works her way through seven

  211. brothers, all of whom dies and then she

  212. dies. They don't um flesh out the

  213. details. Perhaps it was a cooking and

  214. you know die from bad food poisoning. I

  215. don't know. They don't say whatever it

  216. was. But you know it's it's not the

  217. point, is it? But the killer question is

  218. not what did they die of

  219. but verse 33. in the resurrection.

  220. Therefore, whose wife will this woman

  221. be?

  222. That is the question.

  223. They think they've got a gotcha Jesus.

  224. They're trying to show that to believe

  225. in the resurrection, it's just silly.

  226. It's not going to work. What happens if

  227. you have multiple wives? You know, who

  228. are you going to be married to in

  229. heaven? And we might think, well, that's

  230. a good point, isn't it? They have got

  231. him. What's he going to say to that?

  232. How's it going to work out in reality?

  233. Do you know sometimes I don't know about

  234. you but when I start thinking about

  235. heaven and life after death and all

  236. these things I do come across things

  237. that I I can't quite work out in my head

  238. how it's going to be some unsett

  239. unsettling things or perhaps you've been

  240. through social media and you get these

  241. sound bites clever people comedians and

  242. they like just give this like seems like

  243. a killer argument or insight into why

  244. Christianity can't be true and you go,

  245. "Oh, it kind of leaves you reeling a bit

  246. and you think, I don't know what to say

  247. to that. It seems like they've got a

  248. point there."

  249. So, we can have these unsettling

  250. thoughts from our our own meditations or

  251. from other people. But we can face these

  252. things when we think, I don't know how

  253. to respond, beliefs that that can

  254. trouble us.

  255. I'm going to give you three examples.

  256. Hopefully they won't trip you up and

  257. cause you to stumble. But here's three,

  258. I think probably reasonably common

  259. thoughts that can trouble us. So

  260. firstly, if we're in heaven,

  261. will we remember our loved ones, even

  262. those who ended up going to hell?

  263. And that's a troubling thought, isn't

  264. it? Because we then thought, well, how

  265. can I be happy in heaven if I know there

  266. were people I loved who went to hell?

  267. How does that work? It's a bit of a

  268. problem.

  269. Second thought that might trouble us,

  270. will we remember our sin?

  271. Will we remember other people's sin?

  272. Because surely if we can do that, won't

  273. we feel shame?

  274. Won't we even feel hurt by some of those

  275. things people have done to us? Or just

  276. possibly, won't we even feel temptation

  277. if we can remember our sin?

  278. But if we can't remember our sin, won't

  279. we be robbed of one of the greatest

  280. reasons for being thankful to God for

  281. forgiveness?

  282. So, how do we do that? How do we

  283. remember our sin

  284. but not be entangled in it? That's

  285. something that might be hard for us to

  286. figure out right now.

  287. Third problem that we might have as we

  288. think about it. I think Richard touched

  289. on this a few weeks back when he was

  290. dealing in in Luke chapter 19, rewards

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  291. in heaven. And we might think, well, how

  292. can that be? Because if someone else has

  293. more than another, won't that cause

  294. jealousy, discontentment, resentment?

  295. How's that going to happen? How's that

  296. going to work out in heaven? I could go

  297. on. There's lots of different questions

  298. we could pose that when we start to

  299. think about it, they it could be quite

  300. troublesome to us, but those three are

  301. just um things I wanted to bring up. We

  302. will come back to them a bit later, but

  303. if left unchecked, it's those little

  304. things that can actually cause us

  305. difficulty

  306. and perhaps those and other things, they

  307. might cause us to trip up, perhaps even

  308. lose our faith unless we deal with them

  309. properly.

  310. So, we are we are going to come back to

  311. those later. The Sadducees, they try to

  312. discredit the notion of the resurrection

  313. by pointing out, look, it just doesn't

  314. work. It's not workable in practice. But

  315. they are making at least three mistakes

  316. which Jesus exposes in his wise reply. A

  317. reply that well I think will help us in

  318. our thinking as we maybe think about

  319. things uh to do with heaven and the

  320. afterlife. So let's look at that in our

  321. next point. A wise reply.

  322. So mistake number one, they are assuming

  323. that the same rules apply to the next

  324. life

  325. as do apply to this life. But Jesus

  326. draws a very clear distinction in verse

  327. 34.

  328. Uh the sons of this age, do you see

  329. that? The sons of this age marry and are

  330. given in marriage. But those who are

  331. considered worthy to attain to that age

  332. and to the resurrection from the dead

  333. neither marry nor are given in marriage.

  334. Do you see there's there's a clear this

  335. age and that age. What is true for the

  336. first age doesn't necessarily follow for

  337. what is true in that age. Now some

  338. things do stay the same. Some things do

  339. continue from this age into that age.

  340. But to assume

  341. that we can confidently extrapolate from

  342. how we feel, what we experience and how

  343. we are now into that is how I will feel,

  344. experience and go through then. That is

  345. incorrect. That's making a mistake

  346. because Jesus is clear. There is a this

  347. age, there is a that age. Things will

  348. change. uh we can experience this even

  349. in this age, even in ourselves, don't

  350. we? We change as people over time.

  351. When I was a boy,

  352. going to McDonald's,

  353. it was a real treat for us. Um you know,

  354. we we we didn't have a lot of money.

  355. There was four four kids in the family

  356. and so you know, McDonald's, it was like

  357. a birthday treat. We would go out there.

  358. It was a special time. And uh as a as a

  359. young boy, I would always go for the

  360. cheeseburger,

  361. the Happy Meal, the cheeseburger. And I

  362. used to love it. And I I couldn't think

  363. there was anything better than my

  364. cheeseburger. And then as I grew up, my

  365. my my parents started encouraging me to

  366. why don't you go for a bigger meal? Go

  367. for the try the Big Mac. I wouldn't have

  368. it because I thought the best thing in

  369. McDonald's was the cheeseburger. That

  370. was it. That was the height to my

  371. expectations.

  372. One day I nibbled on my parents' cheese

  373. um Big Mac and I realized what a fool

  374. I'd been. There was something so much

  375. greater than this little puny

  376. cheeseburger to have. How silly I had

  377. been all those years I could have been

  378. enjoying the the fuller Big Mac. And our

  379. experience in glory

  380. is going to be so much fuller.

  381. It's it's hard for us to comprehend what

  382. it will be like right now.

  383. But it will be different. It will not be

  384. the same.

  385. Here's a passage from 2 Corinthians

  386. chapter 15

  387. verses 51- 53. Paul writes, "Behold, I

  388. tell you a mystery. We shall not all

  389. sleep, but we shall all be changed in a

  390. moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at

  391. the last trumpet. For the trumpet will

  392. sound, and the dead will be raised

  393. imperishable, and we shall be changed.

  394. For this perishable body must put on the

  395. imperishable, and this mortal body must

  396. put on immortality.

  397. Did you notice twice he says, "We shall

  398. all be changed." Forgive the

  399. illustration, but it's like we're we're

  400. little cheeseburgers right now. Then

  401. we're going to be these Big Macs,

  402. something so much greater. Our

  403. experience of life will be so much more

  404. wonderful.

  405. We will be the same but we will be

  406. different.

  407. Earlier in that chapter from uh

  408. Corinthians, Paul speaks about how we

  409. will have new bodies, bodies suited for

  410. glory. Right now, we still live with the

  411. effects of sin and the influence of sin

  412. and all the the weakness that comes with

  413. living in a sinful world. But as John

  414. writes in 1 John 3:2, "Beloved," he

    1 John 3:2

  415. says, "we are God's children now,

  416. and what we will be has not yet

  417. appeared, but we know that when he

  418. appears, we shall be like him because we

  419. shall see him as he is." Do you see? We

  420. shall be changed. We shall be made like

  421. Jesus.

  422. In our passage, he says, "You'll be like

  423. the angels." There's going to be a

  424. change that happens. our fleshy sinful

  425. bits that that that that change our

  426. thinking and understanding and actions,

  427. they will finally be dealt with. We will

  428. be glorified. We will be changed.

  429. And so with that in mind, let's just

  430. revisit those unsettling uh scenarios I

  431. suggested earlier. So firstly, how can

  432. we ever be happy in glory knowing there

  433. are some people we loved who are now in

  434. hell?

  435. Firstly, we should never never take hell

  436. lightly.

  437. It's horrible. It's horrible thought.

  438. It's horrific.

  439. And it's ever ever bothered you. It

  440. should bother you. It's in no way should

  441. we ever think this is a light or easy

  442. thing to think about. It should bother

  443. us. The horror we feel at hell should be

  444. a motivation just to share the good news

  445. of Jesus Christ because people can yet

  446. be saved. They don't have to go to hell.

  447. They can be saved.

  448. But when we have been taken to be with

  449. the Lord, when that change has taken

  450. place and we've been glorified and our

  451. thinking has been transformed, we think

  452. clearer and better. Our understanding

  453. will be clearer and our hearts will be

  454. perfectly aligned with God. We shall see

  455. things differently. We shall see sin

  456. for just how bad it is.

  457. We will see it in all its ugliness and

  458. we will see holiness and purity and we

  459. will love those things. We won't look at

  460. those things like perhaps we do now and

  461. think, "Well, that's just hard work.

  462. It's spoiling my fun." No, we go, "No,

  463. these these things are good. I love

  464. these things. I love what God has done

  465. in me. He's made me pure and holy now.

  466. And we'll look at justice and we go,

  467. justice is so good. It is what our our

  468. world cries out for now, isn't it? But

  469. then we will see justice and yes, that's

  470. right. And we'll look at what God is

  471. doing and we say, yes, everything that

  472. God has done is is good. We'll look at

  473. his mercy, his justice, his fairness,

  474. and we will agree beyond a shadow of a

  475. doubt that the good and just judge has

  476. acted right.

  477. It's a theologian called Jim Packer. He

  478. wrote this, "God will judge justly and

  479. angels and saints and martyrs will

  480. praise him for it. So it seems

  481. inescapable that we shall with them

  482. approve the judgment of persons of

  483. rebels whom we have known and loved.

  484. Right now it's almost impossible for us

  485. to understand how we will get into that

  486. place of being

  487. where we are able to not

  488. grieve or feel sad in heaven over those

  489. who have gone to hell.

  490. I don't know. I don't understand it. But

  491. this age is different to that age. We

  492. shall see better than we do now.

  493. The second troublesome thought that we

  494. considered was how will we remember our

  495. sin without that being unhelpful? Again,

  496. we we need to remember we shall be

  497. different. We shall be like Jesus. So,

  498. it will be possible for us to be aware

  499. of past sins without being entangled in

  500. them. And rather our past sins being a

  501. source of shame or hurt,

  502. our deliverance from the past sin will

  503. be a source of thanksgiving and

  504. gratitude and praise.

  505. We will be able to say that is that is

  506. who I was. That was my past self. And

  507. then Jesus came in and saved me. And

  508. instead of being a point of shame, it

  509. will be a point of praise. And I thank

  510. God for what he did. That's how I was.

  511. But this is who Jesus has made me be. As

  512. Luke um says, as Jesus says in Luke 7

  513. about the sinful woman who anointed his

  514. feet, she loves much because her sins

  515. are forgiven. Her many sins are

  516. forgiven. And so in the age to come, our

  517. sin, I don't it's not going to be a

  518. snare to us or a source of shame. It

  519. will be fuel for the fire of grateful

  520. praise.

  521. Thirdly, uh third scenario we we spoke

  522. briefly about was rewards in heaven.

  523. Again, we need to remember we're going

  524. to be changed. We're not going to be the

  525. same sinful creatures that we still find

  526. ourselves to be. Those seeds of sin will

  527. be removed from us. And and you know,

  528. these changes, they even happen now. So,

  529. the Lord is already at work in us

  530. changing us, changing our attitudes now,

  531. making us into what we will be. Um,

  532. we've got a lovely group of friends in

  533. the church that I grew up in as back in

  534. Surrey and we grew up with various

  535. people and we got to various life

  536. stages, went through that with them, got

  537. married and we all bought similar houses

  538. um and uh that was lovely and we were

  539. very close to each other and then um

  540. Claire and I moved into ministry and so

  541. I served as a pastor. we had to leave

  542. our house behind and we we rent that out

  543. now. But that meant at that point we got

  544. off the um housing advancement ladder as

  545. it were. We stepped off the escalator of

  546. going to upgrading your house as you do.

  547. You know, you start off with your you

  548. start a place, you get a bigger one, a

  549. bigger one, then your forever home or

  550. whatever, you know, and we kind of had

  551. to step off that. And then as our we

  552. stepped off, our friends kind of carried

  553. on and they got nicer houses and nicer

  554. houses. And there came a time when our

  555. friends invited us around to go and see

  556. their lovely new home. And knowing what

  557. my heart was like, I had to pray, "Lord,

  558. help me not to be covetous.

  559. Let me be able to rejoice with them."

  560. And you know what? God answered that

  561. prayer. I was able to genuinely walk

  562. around their house and be pleased with

  563. them. See the nice big house with all

  564. the nice stuff and go, do you know,

  565. praise the Lord, it's good that you can

  566. enjoy this. This is good. That was only

  567. a work of God's grace in my heart to to

  568. enable that to happen. I didn't feel

  569. envious, but by God's grace, I was able

  570. to enjoy or join them in their

  571. happiness. And I suspect that gives us a

  572. little insight into how it will be in

  573. heaven. Our fleshy nature struggles to

  574. understand how these things can be. But

  575. that will be removed and we will able to

  576. be we will be able to be genuinely happy

  577. for all those around us. The Lord's

  578. blessed you with these gifts with that

  579. and I praise the Lord with you. Let's

  580. enjoy that. You know, let's give thanks.

  581. We will get we're going to be changed.

  582. We're not going to be the same. So I

  583. think we will be genuinely able to join

  584. in others with thanksgiving to the Lord

  585. for his good gifts whether they be that

  586. big, that big, that big. And we're not

  587. going to be discontent

  588. or unhappy. Uh we will be able to be

  589. fully happy in the Lord and full of the

  590. joy of the Lord. Just because we can't

  591. understand how heavenly rewards work, it

  592. doesn't mean it won't be so because

  593. we're going to be changed. So what we

  594. are now is not going to be what we will

  595. be then.

  596. That was the Sadducees first mistake.

  597. They didn't realize that there would be

  598. a difference between this age and that

  599. age. Mistake number two, and don't

  600. worry, these go a lot quicker than that

  601. one. Um, mistake number two, uh, they

  602. didn't have all the facts

  603. and neither do we.

  604. In their case, Jesus brought fresh

  605. revelation into the situation because

  606. the Sadducees were wrong in their

  607. assumptions.

  608. So Jesus corrects them and tells them in

  609. that age there'll be no marriage. And

  610. with that statement, he blows apart

  611. their whole argument.

  612. It's no longer an issue. It's a

  613. non-issue. It's not a problem about

  614. marriage in heaven because you're not

  615. going to be getting married in heaven.

  616. So it's not an issue.

  617. Now some of you might think ph you know

  618. finally freedom hopefully not some

  619. people are laughing too much dear

  620. hopefully most of us will be going well

  621. actually no you know I'm it's been a

  622. blessing to be married and I can't

  623. imagine after so many years not being

  624. married and and I I think I'm going to

  625. miss that

  626. but like the Sadducees we need to admit

  627. we don't have all the facts right now

  628. it's a bit like when you book a holiday.

  629. Uh, you know where you're going. You

  630. know some of the details, but you don't

  631. know everything. You don't know what the

  632. weather's going to be like. You don't

  633. know at what point you're going to enjoy

  634. your favorite meal, how warm the sea

  635. will feel, how comfortable your

  636. accommodation will be, when the good

  637. conversations are going to happen, when

  638. the fun's going to happen, when you're

  639. going to laugh, when you, you know, you

  640. can't understand everything about it,

  641. but you kind of know roughly

  642. stuff about it. And do you know our life

  643. in the new heavens and the earth? There

  644. there's a lot we don't know about. A lot

  645. of the details we just don't know.

  646. The Sadducees, they don't have all the

  647. facts. We don't have all the facts. And

  648. that led them to faulty conclusions. And

  649. when we worry about some of these

  650. things, you know, how it will be, are we

  651. going to miss marriage? What about sex

  652. and stuff like that? Um remember we

  653. don't have all the facts right now.

  654. But we do know it will be good. And

  655. we're going to come back to this very

  656. briefly right at the end. But it will be

  657. good. The third mistake is they hadn't

  658. properly understood what they had

  659. already been told in scripture.

  660. And this is the kudigrass. They open

  661. their argument by quoting from the law

  662. of Moses. So they open their argument by

  663. quoting by the law of Moses. And Jesus

  664. closes his argument by quoting from

  665. Moses too. Jesus could have referred to

  666. other Old Testament passages to prove

  667. the resurrection hope such as those we

  668. read at the beginning, Daniel 12, Isaiah

  669. 26, Job 19. But he counters

  670. their argument using what he knows they

  671. hold to most highly from the Pentich

  672. from from the writings of Moses. And the

  673. point Jesus makes is although Abraham,

  674. Isaac, and Jacob were long dead at the

  675. time of that writing, um, God was still

  676. the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  677. Not was, but is. So when people die,

  678. they're not dead in the sense of ceasing

  679. to exist.

  680. They are still alive to God.

  681. God is still their God. As Jesus says in

  682. verse 38, for they all live to him. If

  683. people think they can escape God by

  684. dying, they are very much mistaken. You

  685. will always be alive to God.

  686. So that's the three mistakes the

  687. Sadducees made. Number one, not

  688. realizing the age to come will be

  689. different. Number two, not realizing

  690. they didn't have all the facts. And

  691. number three, not understanding the

  692. revelation already in their possession.

  693. And if we come across unsettling

  694. arguments, thoughts about the age to

  695. come, heaven, how it's all going to work

  696. out, and all those sorts of things, it's

  697. worth just remembering these three

  698. things. And they'll probably help us uh

  699. find our way through.

  700. Just because we struggle to understand

  701. how something will be, it doesn't mean

  702. it will not be. In fact, to finish,

  703. let's briefly consider some of the

  704. encouragements that do come out of this

  705. passage in our final point, an unending

  706. life.

  707. I know there's some people in our

  708. congregation who don't just do maths,

  709. they love maths. I don't understand

  710. them, but that's okay. They are. And you

  711. know, that's that's good.

  712. Um perhaps if we realize just how

  713. important maths was for pretty much

  714. everything that we use and enjoy for

  715. daily life, we might get a bit more

  716. excited if we thought actually without

  717. maths that that wouldn't happen.

  718. I'm no mathematician. I have no idea.

  719. But I know this. If you've got a really

  720. exciting long equation, that's an Yeah.

  721. Yeah. exciting equation. Um, but if

  722. you've got one of those things, right,

  723. and and it's really great and it does

  724. wonderful things. If you make a mistake

  725. right at the beginning, doesn't matter

  726. how wonderful the rest of the maths is,

  727. it's going to be wrong if it's based on

  728. on a mistake.

  729. And the Sadducees, they've made a

  730. mistake in the first place. And it leads

  731. them to make another even bigger mistake

  732. because they didn't believe in the

  733. resurrection. And so what that means is

  734. because they don't believe in it,

  735. they're not planning for it. Jesus

  736. reveals that every not everyone

  737. Jesus reveals that not everyone will

  738. rise in a positive way. Verse 35,

  739. but those who are considered worthy to

  740. retain to that age and to the

  741. resurrection from the dead. Now, we know

  742. from what Jesus says in John 5 29

  743. that some will experience a resurrection

  744. to life

  745. or of life whilst others will experience

  746. a resurrection of judgment.

  747. So, there's two different ways that we

  748. can be resurrected to life or to

  749. judgment.

  750. But Jesus isn't speaking about the

  751. judgment aspect of it. He's that's not

  752. his focus. He's not trying to say

  753. everything there is to say about

  754. resurrection. He's speaking about those

  755. who are raised to life. So the question

  756. for us is he says those who are worthy,

  757. counted as worthy to attain this new

  758. life.

  759. And remember Jesus is speaking in the

  760. week leading up to the cross.

  761. The shadow of his death and a

  762. resurrection is creeping ever closer.

  763. And the mistake the Sadducees are making

  764. is standing against Jesus instead of

  765. with Jesus. For it is only by by faith

  766. in Jesus and in his death and

  767. resurrection that we can be counted as

  768. worthy.

  769. It is by trusting in his death that we

  770. are given life. Their mistake in

  771. rejecting the resurrection, in rejecting

  772. Jesus means they are rejecting him and

  773. his resurrection. And so they are

  774. rejecting their only hope in which to be

  775. called counted as worthy.

  776. That is their mistake.

  777. And that the resurrection from the dead

  778. isn't just a comforting idea to console

  779. those who can't cope, but is real. that

  780. that is the case will soon be proved to

  781. be true in the resurrection of Jesus

  782. Christ. For anyone who would take the

  783. time to look and think and believe,

  784. Jesus himself would prove this to be

  785. true. But he himself would die. He

  786. himself would be resurrected to life,

  787. never to die again. And the good news

  788. for us is for those who trust in the

  789. Lord Jesus Christ and what he did on the

  790. cross, we are joined to him.

  791. So everything that's true about Christ

  792. is now true about us. We have union with

  793. Jesus.

  794. We are raised to life with Christ never

  795. to die again. And this is what Jesus

  796. says. I tell you I found this so helpful

  797. uh when I was reading it in my

  798. preparation. It it blew me away. Just

  799. look at these words. Our hope, our

  800. assurance. Verse 36.

  801. For they cannot die anymore.

  802. Isn't that

  803. amazing?

  804. Not just they won't, they cannot

  805. die

  806. anymore.

  807. Brothers and sisters, we live in the

  808. shadow of death. It's creeping ever

  809. closer to us. And we all know one day we

  810. are going to have to face it. go through

  811. the the waters of Jordan or whatever we

  812. want to sort of call it. But what a

  813. glorious truth from the mouth of Jesus.

  814. Those who are joined to him, who are

  815. raised in him, we cannot die anymore.

  816. Cannot. It's impossible for those raised

  817. with Jesus to die. Those who have been

  818. given this righteousness that comes

  819. through faith in Jesus will be raised to

  820. everlasting life. If this does not move

  821. your soul, I I don't know what will.

  822. It's It's truly

  823. joyful and amazing, isn't it? Eternal

  824. life.

  825. Eternal life. That's why we don't need

  826. marriage anymore in heaven, by the way,

  827. in the new heavens and new earth.

  828. Because no one will be dying. We don't

  829. need a constant supply of children to

  830. replace us because we know we're going

  831. to die anymore. No, no one's going to

  832. die. So, it's okay.

  833. We love children, but you we're not

  834. going to need any more of them.

  835. Now, I said I'm I'm going to return to

  836. the fact that we might feel a bit sad

  837. that there's no marriage in in in

  838. heaven,

  839. but I I don't think we need to feel sad

  840. because remember, everything is going to

  841. change, even us, for the better.

  842. And so in glory, not only will we know

  843. the Lord in a much much fuller way,

  844. a richer way, a more wonderful way, our

  845. experience, our fellowship with the Lord

  846. will be so much better. What we have now

  847. is it's just a deposit. It's just an

  848. insight. It's just a glimpse. It's just

  849. a little thing. Then it will be so much

  850. glorious.

  851. You will think the joy of the Lord will

  852. just be so much greater than it is now.

  853. That's true. That is true. But also our

  854. relationships with each other will be

  855. transformed too. So our friendships will

  856. be deeper. Our laughter will be louder

  857. and longer. Gone will be those

  858. misunderstandings, those niggly things

  859. that ruin our friendships. And and if

  860. you do meet up with your once husband or

  861. wife or uh

  862. good friends in in in the new heavens

  863. and new earth, you'll be so busy

  864. enjoying deeper fellowship with them

  865. that you won't be lamenting the fact

  866. that you're not married because

  867. something better has come along. There

  868. will be a deeper better friendship. If

  869. you think you have good friendships,

  870. good marriages now, well then praise God

  871. for that. But you ain't seen nothing

  872. yet.

  873. When the sons and daughters of God get

  874. together and have been transformed and

  875. so love God as we should and love each

  876. other as we should, watch out because

  877. it's going to be life and love and joy

  878. like you've never known before.

  879. Jesus said in John 10:10, "I have come

    John 10:10

  880. that they may have life and have it to

  881. the full."

  882. Let's just be quiet for a moment before

  883. the Lord.

  884. Father, we confess that if it was down

  885. to us,

  886. none of us would be counted worthy.

  887. Not a single person in this building

  888. would be saved.

  889. And yet, we thank you for the love of

  890. God, the love of Jesus. We thank you

  891. that Jesus so loved us. We thank you

  892. that you sent him into the world to come

  893. and die in our place to take our sin so

  894. that we can be presented to you

  895. clean

  896. and given the righteousness of Jesus

  897. so that you are pleased with us. So we

  898. are acceptable to you. And now because

  899. of Jesus we have got nothing to fear but

  900. only a wonderful hope to live for. So

  901. Lord we thank you for the gospel. Lord,

  902. help us all to consider these things and

  903. to rejoice. We pray this in Jesus name.
