  1. Well, the um Mission Impossible

  2. franchise has been incredibly successful

  3. for uh Tom Cruz. Um if you watch the

  4. first film back in 19 um 96. Uh it

  5. featured the fictional IMF agent Ethan

  6. Hunt

  7. as part of a team in Prague. They were

  8. trying to safeguard a highly top secret

  9. list of names. I think it was called the

  10. knocklist or something. And they were a

  11. team of experts, uh, expert operatives.

  12. They had all the the gadgetry and kits,

  13. the mics, the video glasses, the

  14. surveillance, the, uh, computer hacking

  15. skills and everything that you needed,

  16. all the passports and everything

  17. associated with some sort of um,

  18. classified mission. But what they didn't

  19. know, what that team on that mission

  20. didn't know was there was another team

  21. at work in the same place. They had been

  22. betrayed by their leader, Jim Phelps. He

  23. was running another team and he was

  24. running a second mission at the same

  25. time. And both had the same goal to get

  26. that secret list of names.

  27. And in our passage,

  28. there are two teams as it were. Both

  29. sides are running their own mission, but

  30. they have the same goal. It is to see

  31. Jesus die.

  32. But the motivations are very different.

  33. We only have two points this morning and

  34. then each we'll look at those two

  35. different missions. So firstly, there

  36. was the mission destruction. mission

  37. destruction. Let's read uh again from uh

  38. chapter 22:es 1 and 2. Now the feast of

  39. unleavened bread drew near which is

  40. called the Passover. And the chief

  41. priests and the scribes were seeking how

  42. to put him to death for they feared the

  43. people. And this has been building

  44. throughout the gospel of Luke. A growing

  45. tension between Jesus and the religious

  46. elite. And now the gloves are off. There

  47. is no pretense. Uh they are going for

  48. him. They are actively seeking a way to

  49. kill him. The NIV translates it as as

  50. they are looking for a way to get rid of

  51. him, which to me seems a bit tame. I'm

  52. no Bible translator at all, but the

  53. Greek word means to execute, to destroy.

  54. Uh they have heard his teaching, they've

  55. seen his signs, they have rejected him,

  56. and they want to remove him from

  57. existence.

  58. And it's curious, isn't it? Worldwide

  59. recent events show us actually killing

  60. leaders and people that we don't like is

  61. not gone away. That's what our world

  62. still does. If we don't like a leader or

  63. someone in power, there all sorts of

  64. ways to deal with him. And as we've seen

  65. this week, one is to blow them up.

  66. Modern leaders use other things as well.

  67. Poison, slander, discreet assassination,

  68. all sorts of things. But nothing much

  69. has changed. If you don't like someone,

  70. then remove them. And that's what the

  71. religious leaders were doing back then.

  72. Uh but they were very concerned with how

  73. that looked. They weren't quite so open

  74. about it as others might be today. They

  75. they feared the people. You see, the

  76. person they wanted to destroy wasn't a

  77. public menace, wasn't a despotic leader.

  78. The person they wanted to get rid of was

  79. a teacher,

  80. a healer,

  81. someone who was thought by many could

  82. possibly be the Messiah.

  83. And Jesus was very popular. Cast your

  84. eyes back to verse 38. And early in the

  85. morning, all the people came to him. All

  86. the people, did you see that? They came

  87. to him to hear him. Jesus was a threat

  88. to their popularity. He was a threat to

  89. their standing in the community. He was

  90. showing them up. He was calling them

  91. out. He was exposing their sin. And they

  92. knew that many were taken with him. And

  93. so they were waiting for the quiet

  94. moment away from the crowds

  95. to remove him.

  96. Unbeknown to them,

  97. they had an unlikely ally. an ally who

  98. they wouldn't really have wanted to be

  99. associated with but who wanted to see

  100. Jesus dead too and that was Satan.

  101. And it's at this point that Satan sees

  102. his chance and enters Judas

  103. and he emboldens

  104. Judas to go and betray Jesus.

  105. And I'm sure for many of us sitting here

  106. that raises certain questions.

  107. So firstly, can people be possessed by

  108. the devil himself?

  109. And the answer from this passage clearly

  110. seems to be yes. That can happen.

  111. Possession doesn't always look obvious

  112. like foaming at the mouth and crazy

  113. behavior, but it can happen.

  114. Another question that might occur to us

  115. is, well, can a true believer in whom

  116. the Holy Spirit dwells

  117. be possessed by demonic force?

  118. And the teaching of scripture seems

  119. clear that that can't happen. See, Jesus

  120. is the strong man. If you go back to

  121. Luke 11, he's the strong man who binds

  122. Satan who then comes to live in us by

  123. his spirit and he guards us. So first

    1 John 4:4

  124. John 4:4, little children, you are from

  125. God and have overcome them. For he who

  126. is in you is greater than he who is in

  127. the world.

  128. Now, that doesn't mean that we can't be

  129. affected by demonic activity,

  130. that we can't be oppressed in some way

  131. or spiritually attacked. Now, as in

  132. Ephesians chapter 6, which we looked at

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  133. recently, we need to put on the full

  134. armor of God and watch out. Why? For the

  135. devil's schemes. Our battle, our

  136. struggle is not against man, flesh. It's

  137. against spiritual uh beings.

  138. But as James 4:7 and 8 says, "Submit

    James 4:7

  139. yourselves therefore to God. Resist the

  140. devil and he will flee from you. Draw

  141. near to God and he will draw near to

  142. you." So when in reliance upon God, we

  143. resist the devil. He flees from us.

  144. So what we're dealing with here with

  145. Judas is not a possession of a true

  146. believer but a possession of someone who

  147. is close to Jesus

  148. but not actually with Jesus. And that is

  149. a real danger.

  150. Not so much possession.

  151. It seems to me that in our modern world

  152. that is extremely rare. I'm not not

  153. going to say ne never would happen, but

  154. it seems to me it's extremely rare,

  155. actual demon possession, certainly in

  156. this this culture that we're in. But

  157. what is much more common is those who

  158. are close to Jesus,

  159. but who are not actually with Jesus.

  160. They're not actually for Jesus.

  161. In my previous church um at Christmas

  162. time uh for our carol service we used to

  163. hire a big auditorium

  164. and uh we put on a good show for the

  165. community and and many many um people

  166. used to come and enjoy it and they they

  167. used to hear the gospel preached sing

  168. carols and eat mince pies and uh on one

  169. event uh one year I remember I was

  170. sitting in these these chairs and I was

  171. uh in in the congregation behind two

  172. older ladies and I distinctly remember

  173. overhearing one turn to the other and

  174. say that was good. I love the singing

  175. but I don't like all that Jesus stuff.

  176. Why do they have to keep going on about

  177. Jesus all the time? I was surprised all

  178. the times, you know, Christmas seemed to

  179. be the time you might expect people to

  180. mention Jesus. But sadly that can be the

  181. way. People come to church and they like

  182. the community, they like the singing,

  183. they like the friendship, they like a

  184. lot of what the church has to offer, but

  185. they just don't want to get too close

  186. to Jesus,

  187. to get personal with him and and let him

  188. in.

  189. And perhaps that's like some here this

  190. morning.

  191. You if that is you, it's great that

  192. you're here and you're very welcome. But

  193. it's not enough to just come and do

  194. churchy things. Jesus calls us all to

  195. come to him, to submit to him, to put

  196. our own personal faith in him, to make

  197. him our Lord and Savior.

  198. And that seems to be a step that Judas

  199. hadn't taken.

  200. What's even harder to understand and

  201. more confusing is that actually he was

  202. so involved with Jesus that he's been

  203. serving Jesus in a manner of speaking.

  204. He's been sent out on mission with the

  205. other disciples.

  206. And again, there can be those who do

  207. things in Jesus's name. They serve. They

  208. play their part. They may be even on

  209. church rotors. They can be involved in

  210. the work of the church and and yet still

  211. not be saved.

  212. Their heart is not really for Jesus.

  213. If you think

  214. that could be you,

  215. then don't waste time.

  216. Draw near to him now.

  217. Even in the quietness as I speak, why

  218. don't you just come to Jesus yourself

  219. right now and ask him to be your Lord

  220. and Savior to lead you for the rest of

  221. your days. Why not? It's the most

  222. important thing you can ever do.

  223. Judas looks like he belongs to Jesus,

  224. but Jesus wasn't in his heart. But what

  225. is in his heart makes him an ideal

  226. candidate for Satan's purposes. You see,

  227. Satan has always hated God. He wants to

  228. take take God's place. And he's been

  229. working against God in his plans ever

  230. since the beginning. He began with Adam

  231. and Eve sewing the seeds of doubt and

  232. tempting them to doubt God and almost

  233. saying, "Look, you can become like God

  234. if you just ignore him."

  235. And we know how that story went. And as

  236. God pronounced the punishment and the

  237. curse, God promised that one day the

  238. women woman's offspring would bruise

  239. Satan's head and that Satan would um no,

  240. he would crush Satan's head and and that

  241. Satan would bruise the uh woman's off of

  242. off offspring.

  243. And that is what Satan has been working

  244. to derail ever since, trying to stop

  245. this promised savior, this promised

  246. offspring. So, Satan has been working

  247. throughout history trying to derail

  248. God's uh purposes and plans often one

  249. step behind

  250. behind the scenes at work. So, uh he he

  251. he tried to destroy God's people in

  252. Egypt by having the sons of Israel

  253. thrown into the Nile. He constantly was

  254. at work trying to lead the nation of

  255. Israel away from God to get them to

  256. worship other idols. He tempted Herod to

  257. slaughter all the baby boys in Bethlehem

  258. who were two years and under to try and

  259. get this promised Messiah killed. He

  260. tempted Jesus to bypass obedience to God

  261. and submission to God and take the

  262. shortcut to glory. Because if he could

  263. get Jesus to repeat Adam's mistake, then

  264. God's rescue plan would fail and all

  265. humanity would be lost.

  266. And then we read in Luke chapter 4 verse

    Luke 4:13

  267. 13 at that that time of um temptation we

  268. read and when the devil had ended every

  269. temptation he departed from him until an

  270. opportune time and here is the opportune

  271. time to destroy the promised savior and

  272. that was the objective of the religious

  273. leaders too and because Judas doesn't

  274. have in his heart a love for Jesus but

  275. other things that makes him susceptible

  276. to the devil and makes him useful to

  277. him. So, Satan takes advantage of

  278. Judas's sinful desires and amplifies

  279. them and so influences him against

  280. Jesus.

  281. So, Judas may have helped uh may have

  282. been helped along the way by Satan, but

  283. actually in Judas's own heart, there was

  284. an emnity to Jesus.

  285. And we see that Jesus holds him

  286. accountable uh for his own actions. It's

  287. not the Satan made me do it. He is

  288. accountable for his own actions.

  289. What was in Judas's heart?

  290. Maybe there was a love of money. We see

  291. he sells Jesus out for money.

  292. Maybe Jesus wasn't the Messiah Judas

  293. wanted and signed up for. Maybe there

  294. was a mix of motives.

  295. Whatever it was, he betrays Jesus.

  296. That's what Satan always is aiming for.

  297. That's what people who hold who go up

  298. against Jesus always end up doing

  299. turning against him. Of course, verse

  300. six, the conspirators are delighted at

  301. what happens. The Greek word cairo means

  302. to rejoice, to be glad, to be in a state

  303. of happiness. The apostle Paul always

  304. uses this word to speak about rejoicing.

  305. Rejoice in the Lord always. It's the

  306. same word. It's that state of elation

  307. and happiness. Rejoice, rejoice, be

  308. glad. That's how these religious leaders

  309. felt about this betrayal. They are

  310. rejoicing.

  311. Perhaps if they'd seen who was behind

  312. the scenes, who they were getting into

  313. bed with, they would have been alarmed

  314. and not rejoicing. But they don't. You

  315. see, their hatred of Jesus has blinded

  316. them to the truth.

  317. And rejecting Jesus always leads to

  318. spiritual blindness

  319. and doing things which actually once we

  320. never would have dreamt we would have

  321. done. So the mission to destroy Jesus

  322. brings together man's sinful rejection

  323. of God and Satan's hatred of God. And

  324. because Jesus is God in the flesh, he's

  325. the son of God. He's the promised one,

  326. the rightful king, the savior, the one

  327. who has and will defeat Satan.

  328. They hated him.

  329. And it's because Jesus is who he is that

  330. that often people gun for Jesus. We can

  331. kind of cope with God up there, but when

  332. we see God made flesh, we see what God

  333. is really like. And so we go for Jesus.

  334. If you are not for Jesus, then be aware

  335. of who you are aligning yourself with.

  336. If he's not your savior,

  337. then what is Jesus to you?

  338. If he's not your savior, what is he to

  339. you?

  340. Rejecting Jesus blinds you to the truth.

  341. It pits you against God and against the

  342. savior. There's no middle ground.

  343. There's no sitting on the fence.

  344. Well, that was the mission destruction

  345. that wanted to see Jesus dead. But there

  346. was another mission being carried out at

  347. the same time. a mission that had the

  348. same goal for Jesus to die. But that

  349. wasn't a mission of destruction. It was

  350. a mission of mercy. It's a mission of

  351. sacrifice. And that's our final point

  352. this morning. Verse one.

  353. Now, the feast of unleavened bread drew

  354. near, which is called the Passover. I'm

  355. told strictly speaking, the feast of the

  356. unleavened bread and the Passover were

  357. distinct. You can see that in Numbers

    Numbers 28:16

  358. 28:16, if you really want to. Um the

  359. Passover proper was followed by the

  360. 7-day feast of the unleavened bread. And

  361. so they were effectively regarded as the

  362. same festival even though they were

  363. technically distinct things. They

  364. happened at the same time. The term

  365. Passover can cover the whole period. I

  366. guess a bit like our Christmas time

  367. covers more than just the one day. It's

  368. like the whole uh week or whatever

  369. around around that day. The Passover was

  370. the biggest feast of the year. for the

  371. Jews. It looked back to the time of

  372. Israel's slavery in Egypt to when the

  373. angel of death passed over their houses.

  374. Now, in reality, they had sinned just as

  375. much as Egypt. And yet, their sin had

  376. been covered by the blood of the lamb

  377. that had been dorbed on the doorposts.

  378. And that's why judgment passed over

  379. them, not because they were better, but

  380. because they had been covered by that

  381. sacrificial lamb. So they were passed

  382. over. Judgment passed over them.

  383. So that's what they remembered at the

  384. Passover. At the Passover, they also ate

  385. the bitter herbs to remind them of the

  386. bitter years of slavery to Pharaoh. And

  387. they ate reclining at the table as a

  388. sign of their freedom. They were no

  389. longer slaves. The unleavened bread

  390. symbolized their hasty departure from

  391. the land of Egypt and Passover for the

  392. Jewish people. It was a very social

  393. people all gathering in groups to

  394. celebrate this together. And if you've

  395. ever hosted a kind of big gathering at

  396. Christmas, you know, that takes a lot of

  397. work. You know, there's lots of

  398. vegetables and all sorts to prepare,

  399. lots and lots of preparations. And so it

  400. was with the Passover. There were all

  401. kinds of preparations to be made. So

  402. Jesus sends Peter and John off to make

  403. preparations. so that they can celebrate

  404. the Passover together. Now, what seems

  405. unclear in in what follows is is Jesus

  406. demonstrating supernatural insight or is

  407. it just a case of good planning on his

  408. part? We won't spend too much time on

  409. this because it's not really the main

  410. point of the passage, but um verse 13

  411. could indicate that this little episode

  412. of the man with the water jug, there is

  413. some divine

  414. um knowledge going on. There's insight

  415. going on here that is beyond normal

  416. human activity. So verse 13 says, "And

  417. they went and found it just as he had

  418. told them." That little detail seems

  419. superfluous if there is nothing

  420. remarkable going on. You know, he

  421. planned it and it happened like well

  422. yeah of course but he's sort of saying

  423. just as he told him it's a little I

  424. think it's a little indication this was

  425. a little bit out of the ordinary. So

  426. Peter and John are sent off on a mission

  427. to prepare the Passover. It seems

  428. feasible that Jesus had already had

  429. dealings with the the homeowner. Um

  430. perhaps this house owner had heard Jesus

  431. speak on another occasion. Perhaps he

  432. had been saved and he said to Jesus,

  433. "Yeah, I've got this big house, big up a

  434. room. If you want to use it, you know,

  435. you have have some chill time with your

  436. disciples, then come around. You'll be

  437. very welcome." And Jesus thinks, "Great.

  438. Okay." And so, so that's all very

  439. plausible and possible, isn't it? But

  440. then that time comes and Jesus wants to

  441. take up this uh kind offer. How are the

  442. disciples to know where to go?

  443. Well, there's a sign. There's a man

  444. carrying the water jug. How How is that

  445. a sign? Well, we're told that it that

  446. would have been distinctive because

  447. women carried water jugs and men carried

  448. water skins. Seems odd, doesn't it? That

  449. the women get I'm imagining a big water

  450. jug and the men carry a little skin.

  451. That seems a bit unfair. Maybe I don't

  452. understand the historical stuff of it

  453. all, but there we go. That was the

  454. tradition. uh men would uh carry skins

  455. and women would carry big water jugs. Um

  456. but even so with that sort of like okay

  457. the man's carrying the water jug. If

  458. that was me sent on this mission to meet

  459. this guy, I'd want to know a bit more

  460. like um where are we going to meet? If

  461. someone said to you right, you got to

  462. meet this guy in Trobridge. He's wearing

  463. I don't know a yellow scarf or

  464. something. You go, well that's great,

  465. but where whereabouts in Trobridge is

  466. quite a big place. We made that even big

  467. and said you're going to London and meet

  468. this one particular guy. is going to be

  469. carrying a I don't know say a water jug.

  470. Why not? You know, you say, "Well,

  471. that's great, but where where is

  472. London's huge? I mean, how are you ever

  473. going to find this one guy at the right

  474. time? Where am I going to meet him?" And

  475. I think this is where the divine insight

  476. part goes. Jesus doesn't give them a

  477. what, three words or a postcode or meet

  478. him by the tower with the graffiti on.

  479. Jesus knows they will meet him at just

  480. the right place, at just the right time.

  481. And it all happened just as Jesus said.

  482. So there seems to be clearly some sort

  483. of divine insight plan going on uh

  484. around this.

  485. But let's leave those ponderings and

  486. move on because Jesus was very much

  487. looking forward to celebrating the

  488. Passover

  489. and it will all come together just as he

  490. said. He's not leaving it to chance.

  491. They're not going to miss him. This is

  492. the divine plan. And so it happens. They

  493. meet the water guy carrying uh water jug

  494. carrying guy and they follow him and

  495. find the house and the owner and he's

  496. happy for them to use it as as said.

  497. And what a what a willingness what a

  498. nice thing it is for people to be

  499. willing to use the houses for the Lord,

  500. isn't it? That was obviously the the

  501. homeowner's intention is is happy for

  502. the Lord to use it. And I hope we we we

  503. sort of do that as well. We're

  504. hospitable. We invite people into our

  505. homes and say, you know, let's let's

  506. spend time together. Let's use what

  507. we've got. I mean, that's a really good

  508. thing. This is what this this guy does.

  509. Well, the time comes, the preparations

  510. have been made, and Jesus and the rest

  511. of the disciples, they arrive. They make

  512. their way up to the upper room. And it's

  513. as Jesus reclines at the table that he

  514. shares how much he's been looking

  515. forward to eating the Passover with

  516. them.

  517. It's interesting concept to imagine

  518. Jesus looking forward to something,

  519. isn't it? Sometimes we might feel guilty

  520. about looking forward to something or

  521. did Jesus look forward to something?

  522. He's been eagerly anticipating this

  523. Passover.

  524. Looking forward to it. Why was Jesus

  525. looking forward to it? Did he just fancy

  526. some lamb?

  527. And maybe it was the food. It's not

  528. wrong to look forward to to food, is it?

  529. Uh, was it that that time with his his

  530. close friends? Was it the peace before

  531. the storm?

  532. How it was all going to picture God's

  533. salvation? Perhaps it's a mixture of of

  534. all of those. I mean, he says he desired

  535. to eat. So, he's not just going there

  536. and he's just going to not participate.

  537. He desires to eat. He desires to eat

  538. specifically with them. So, we we're

  539. building that picture up there. these

  540. men who have been his closest friends.

  541. There's something about eating with

  542. people that signifies friendship and

  543. helps with ties of fellowship. That's

  544. why I think it's really important as a

  545. church that we eat together. So, I'm I'm

  546. really happy that we're still doing our

  547. fellowship lunches. I know it's a lot of

  548. work and it's it's a lot of effort. By

  549. the way, I meant to say there's a signup

  550. sheet at the back uh two weeks time. Um

  551. so but it is important because

  552. this is it forms bonds of friendship.

  553. Jesus was looking forward to eating this

  554. meal with his disciples.

  555. But it wasn't just any kind of meal. It

  556. was a particular meal. It was this

  557. Passover.

  558. And we can't overlook the timing of

  559. this. This was Thursday night, the last

  560. night of Jesus's earthly life. He is on

  561. the eve of fulfilling his great mission

  562. of salvation. It's it's at this Passover

  563. meal that has been celebrated for

  564. centuries

  565. that Jesus is not only going to enjoy

  566. good food and good friendship

  567. and and and and give thanks for the past

  568. salvation. But it's at this Passover

  569. he gets to reveal to them that this

  570. ancient meal has been pointing to and

  571. will be fulfilled

  572. in him.

  573. This is it.

  574. This will be the last Passover he'll eat

  575. until it's been fulfilled. In other

  576. words, until it's been fulfilled in him.

  577. And as the purpose of Passover is

  578. fulfilled in Jesus, he celebrates it,

  579. but then he institutes something new,

  580. something that supersedes it. And I

  581. guess that's why as Christians, we don't

  582. need to celebrate the Passover. I mean,

  583. I guess if we wanted to, we could.

  584. Probably nothing wrong in that, I don't

  585. think. Um, but actually, we've got

  586. something superior.

  587. We've got the Lord's supper

  588. which kind of supersedes that Passover.

  589. Verse uh 17. So Jesus takes the cup and

  590. he gives thanks. Now there were four

  591. cups in the celebration of the Passover

  592. and they were drunk at various stages

  593. throughout the meal. We can um assume

  594. that everything played out as normal. Uh

  595. they're eating, they're going through

  596. the normal Passover pattern. But then at

  597. some point perhaps near the end Jesus

  598. takes the bread. He gives thanks. He

  599. gives it to gives the bread to them.

  600. That's all pretty normal, pretty

  601. standard stuff. And then he breaks with

  602. tradition and says verse 19, "This is my

  603. body which is given for you. Do this in

  604. remembrance of me." And let's just spend

  605. a little bit of time thinking about

  606. that. This is my body.

  607. Jesus isn't literally meaning this piece

  608. of bread I'm giving to you is part of my

  609. body. I mean we don't need to be

  610. grotesque about it. But he wasn't

  611. cutting bits off him. That it's just not

  612. the point. We're missing the whole point

  613. if we imagine that's what he's saying.

  614. This this bread doesn't change into a

  615. piece of meat. It's a symbol. It's a

  616. metaphor. He's he's done this many times

  617. in his ministry. He says, "I am the

  618. gate." No one was standing there going,

  619. "Oh, right. Okay, where's the handle?"

  620. It just it's you're missing the point. I

  621. am the gate. I am the true vine. I am

  622. the bread of life. And since he's

  623. physically standing in front of them,

  624. they wouldn't have thought at any point,

  625. oh, this is actually a piece of flesh.

  626. Clearly, it's a symbol for his body. And

  627. notice he says,

  628. "Given for you."

  629. Given

  630. for you.

  631. This isn't something that had been

  632. forced on Jesus.

  633. This isn't something that was being

  634. taken from Jesus. Where a sinful man and

  635. Satan was seeking to take his life,

  636. Jesus came to give his life.

  637. If we were here celebrating the Lord's

  638. supper and we were celebrating how Jesus

  639. was forced against his will to be

  640. murdered. That would be abhorrent,

  641. wouldn't it? That would be awful. That's

  642. not how it happened. Jesus says in John

    John 10:18

  643. 10:18 about his life, he says, "No one

  644. takes it from me, but I lay it down of

  645. my own accord. I have authority to lay

  646. it down, and I have authority to take it

  647. up again."

  648. But this is our savior. He is willing to

  649. lay down his life for us. He gives

  650. himself for you.

  651. Isn't that a precious thought? He gives

  652. himself

  653. for you.

  654. And note that the bread is to be taken

  655. with thanksgiving. That's why some

  656. Christians call the Lord's supper the

  657. Eucharist. Uh comes from the Greek word

  658. that means to give thanks. And of course

  659. the Lord's supper should be a time that

  660. is solemn and and serious in many

  661. aspects. Uh we remember the greatest act

  662. of love ever, the greatest act of

  663. sacrifice ever. So with that there

  664. should be a sense of joyful

  665. thankfulness, a thread running through

  666. the Lord's supper that says we we we

  667. thank you. We don't just remember in a

  668. cool, cold, calculated kind of way.

  669. We we look at Jesus. We recognize what

  670. he's done and we say, "Thank you. Thank

  671. you for saving me. Thank you for giving

  672. yourself for me." We should be thankful.

  673. There should be an element of joy in

  674. this supper.

  675. Then he tells them, "Do this in

  676. remembrance of me.

  677. Do this. Do what?

  678. Take the bread and wine and eat it in

  679. remembrance of me.

  680. How well Jesus knows us, doesn't he?

  681. Because we need this. We need this

  682. constant reminder, don't we? How quickly

  683. Jesus gets crowded out of our busy

  684. lives, out of our affections, out of our

  685. minds. And so, we need this. This is one

  686. of God's gifts of grace to us. A time

  687. given to us to remember Jesus, to come

  688. back to the the place of the cross, to

  689. remember our savior, to remember what he

  690. did, how he loved, how he died for us. A

  691. time to draw close. A time to come

  692. especially with the Lord's people into

  693. his presence and to savor

  694. the Savior. It's a time to savor

  695. the Savior.

  696. And after they had eaten, Jesus said,

  697. "This cup that is poured out for you is

  698. the new covenant in my blood." That's

  699. what been promised in Jeremiah 31:31. It

    Jeremiah 31:31

  700. speaks of the new covenant, not like the

  701. one that God made with his people back

  702. then which they broke. No, this was

  703. something new.

  704. What was new was instead of it being

  705. established by the blood of animals, it

  706. was established with the blood of the

  707. son of God.

  708. All the Old Testament sacrifices, they

  709. couldn't actually deal with sin. They

  710. were signs showing that sin could be

  711. dealt with.

  712. They showed how severe sin was. It

  713. required death.

  714. They showed that God will deal with this

  715. in the full and proper way one day. They

  716. showed the manner of how it would

  717. happen. All these Old Testament

  718. sacrifices, they point to this moment

  719. in Jesus.

  720. Because in Jesus, he was the sacrifice.

  721. he would make on the cross. He was the

  722. lamb of God to which all the others

  723. pointed to. For it's on the cross that

  724. Jesus took our sin and paid with his

  725. flesh and the blood uh he paid with his

  726. blood

  727. the price and the animals that people

  728. can't pay.

  729. This new covenant meant that the law

  730. ceased to be written on those external

  731. stones, but God's law was now

  732. internalized into our hearts. So in

  733. other words, we become or he becomes

  734. part of who we are.

  735. It's his spirit who lives in us.

  736. So we we don't go to a temple to

  737. worship. We come to God through his son

  738. by his spirit. We're not a people far

  739. off, cut off from God, but he has come

  740. close to us. He lives in us by his

  741. spirit.

  742. The old covenant made with Israel

  743. was for Israel. People could join that.

  744. They could convert. But the new covenant

  745. is for all people with all people. All

  746. who come to God trusting in the in the

  747. name of the Lord Jesus Christ can be

  748. included in this new covenant.

  749. This new covenant does not depend on

  750. human righteousness or ethnicity.

  751. It depends on the sunship of Jesus and

  752. his perfect righteousness and his

  753. perfect obedience. obedience even to

  754. death on a cross.

  755. Under the new covenant, our salvation

  756. isn't based on our works,

  757. but on the allsufficient

  758. once for all work of Jesus on the cross.

  759. He has done it. He fulfilled the terms

  760. of the covenant. He's done it for us on

  761. our behalf.

  762. Ephesians chapter 1:7, "In him we have

  763. redemption through his blood, the

  764. forgiveness of our trespasses according

  765. to the riches of his grace which he

  766. lavished on us." It's not in him we have

  767. the forgiveness. It's not in in animals

  768. we have the forgiveness of sins. It's

  769. not based on our lawkeeping and how good

  770. we've been. It's based on Jesus and what

  771. he did.

  772. His grace and lavished upon us. The

  773. death Jesus died was Jesus establishing

  774. a new covenant for us as he said in

  775. verse 20. This cup that is poured out

  776. for you is the new covenant in my blood.

  777. I think this is why Jesus was so keen to

  778. eat the Passover with his disciples that

  779. night because he wants to show them how

  780. deep his love is for them. He wants to

  781. show them how it all comes together.

  782. Centuries of promise and prophecy and

  783. plans, they all come to this point. The

  784. Passover looks forward to Jesus. And the

  785. Lord's supper looks back to Jesus. And

  786. there at the apex of it all is the Lord

  787. Jesus who loved us and gave himself up

  788. for us as a fragrant offering and

  789. sacrifice to God. There he is central to

  790. everything.

  791. Everything's pointing to him. Do you

  792. see?

  793. When we meet around the Lord's table, we

  794. don't celebrate the Passover. We

  795. celebrate who the Passover pointed to,

  796. Jesus. When we take the bread and the

  797. wine, we are partaking in a time of

  798. remembrance.

  799. But not only that, we join in a special

  800. spiritual time of fellowship, fellowship

  801. with the Lord, fellowship with each

  802. other. It is a means of grace to us, a

  803. time of drawing near to remember and to

  804. savor our savior. It's a time of

  805. thanksgiving, a time of blessing that

  806. helps spiritually nourish us and keep us

  807. close to the Lord.

  808. We started off thinking about mission

  809. impossible. And the real mission

  810. impossible

  811. was how can sinful man and a holy God be

  812. reconciled. That is the mission

  813. impossible. But that is the mission that

  814. Jesus came to undertake to restore peace

  815. and friendship between God and man. And

  816. while sinful man and Satan are trying to

  817. take Jesus's life, Jesus came to give

  818. his life as a ransom for many. And that

  819. includes for you and for me.

  820. So, have you personally taken of the

  821. Lord?

  822. We'll pick up the story where we left

  823. off next week. But for now, the most

  824. appropriate thing to do in response is

  825. what Jesus instructed us to do, to

  826. gather around the Lord's table and to

  827. enter into that special time of

  828. communion with the Lord and with each

  829. other. And we will do that after our

  830. next song.
