  1. So there you are.

  2. You've got your bottle of cream and

  3. you're rubbing it into your skin. It's,

  4. you know, enjoying the nice moisturizing

  5. goodness as it goes in and maybe the

  6. delicate scent as it arises. And as

  7. you're sort of dipping into the cream

  8. again, you feel something fibrous, some

  9. sort of little ball of something. You

  10. look down and it's literally a fly in

  11. the ointment.

  12. And uh I I guess this was a problem for

  13. people in the past because we have this

  14. saying, don't we? A fly in the ointment.

  15. And um I don't know, maybe it was just a

  16. common thing. You know, you putting your

  17. stuff on and you go, "Oh, it's a fly."

  18. Uh I don't know. It's a weird weird

  19. saying, but um there we go. But we don't

  20. use it so much these days. Basically,

  21. what it is saying is that this fly, this

  22. something is spoiling something that

  23. should be good. something that should be

  24. enjoyable and yet there's this thing in

  25. the middle of it that you go that's

  26. shouldn't be there and there seems to be

  27. a fly in the ointment of the last supper

  28. several flies in fact this was a meal as

  29. we saw last week that Jesus was very

  30. much looking forward to celebrating with

  31. his friends uh he was going to celebrate

  32. the Passover together with his friends

  33. that was a big part of it was a time to

  34. look back on God's past deliverance and

  35. celebrate that and give thanks for for

  36. God's goodness and delivering Israel. It

  37. was also a time when Jesus showed them

  38. how that Passover pointed to him. And

  39. so, it's a time of looking forward

  40. from that point on to what Jesus had

  41. done or was going to do.

  42. So, it all comes together

  43. in Jesus. He is the apex of God's plan

  44. of salvation. The old looks forward to

  45. him and and the new looks backwards to

  46. him. He's there crowning or crowning it

  47. all. And as he's just explained uh some

  48. of what that involves to his disciples,

  49. how he was going to give himself for

  50. them, it should have knocked their socks

  51. off. There's a funny uh expression as

  52. well, isn't it? I wonder where that came

  53. from. Knocked your socks off. It should

  54. have made them go, "Wow, you're going to

  55. do that for us, Jesus. He's going to

  56. give himself for for for for us. And

  57. yet, as he explains these things,

  58. several flies in the ointment emerge.

  59. There are some things that cast a shadow

  60. over this special mill. The first fly in

  61. the ointment or shadow that's cast over

  62. it is one of Jesus's closest friends

  63. will betray him. And that's our first

  64. point. Woe to you. Woe to you.

  65. We dealt with this a little bit last

  66. week, but there is more to say. Um, so

  67. we saw how Judas had been possessed by

  68. Satan and Satan had taken advantage of

  69. Judas's sinful desires and had

  70. emboldened him to betray Jesus.

  71. But this betrayal

  72. didn't catch Jesus unawares. So verse

  73. 31,

  74. but behold, the hand of him who betrays

  75. me is with me on the table. For the Son

  76. of Man goes as it has been determined,

  77. but woe to that man by whom he is

  78. betrayed. So Jesus knows that there's

  79. one there who is eating this this this

  80. this food, this this Passover, this um

  81. friendship meal, there is one there who

  82. isn't truly a friend. For in not long,

  83. even by the end of that night, he would

  84. betray Jesus. And Jesus knows this.

  85. And we might think, well, why does Jesus

  86. choose this this precise moment to bring

  87. the the whole tone of the meal down and

  88. start talking about this when everyone's

  89. having presumably quite a nice time? But

  90. there might be many reasons why Jesus

  91. chooses this moment to address it. But I

  92. think it's at least this. The disciples

  93. need to know

  94. Jesus was not taken by surprise. His

  95. betrayal, his arrest, his death is not

  96. because Jesus trusted the wrong guy and

  97. got caught out. Now Jesus makes it

  98. clear, verse 22, for the son of man goes

  99. as it has been determined. The events

  100. that would take place over the next 24

  101. hours were not something that derailed

  102. God's great plan of salvation.

  103. Jesus is giving himself that he would

  104. die on the cross to save sinners. That

  105. had been determined by God in eternity.

  106. So Ephesians 1:4

    Ephesians 1:4

  107. even as he chose us in him, that's in

  108. Jesus before the foundation of the world

  109. that we should be holy and blameless

  110. before him. So there was this plan that

  111. we should be chosen in him before the

  112. foundation of the world. Then 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1:19–20

  113. chapter 1 verse 19 to20. I'm reading

  114. from the NIV because it's clearer there.

  115. Christ a lamb without blemish or defect.

  116. He was chosen before the creation of the

  117. world but was revealed in these last

  118. times for your sake. Titus 1:2 in hope

    Titus 1:2

  119. of eternal life which God who never lies

  120. promised before the ages began. So this

  121. has always been the plan that God would

  122. send his beloved son into the world to

  123. save sinners like you and me. So the

  124. disciples needed to know that Jesus was

  125. going to die according to God's plan to

  126. what God had determined. It was the day.

  127. It wasn't because the religious leaders

  128. had had outmaneuvered Jesus. It wasn't

  129. because he was caught off guard by this

  130. friend.

  131. No, Jesus would go through with through

  132. with this rescue mission because it had

  133. been determined in the eternal council

  134. of the triune God.

  135. So

  136. if Judas

  137. had simply been caught between the good

  138. plan of God and the evil plan of Satan,

  139. we thought about this last week. There

  140. were two different missions going on.

  141. The devil intended to do harm by taking

  142. Jesus's life, but Jesus intended to

  143. sacrif sacrificially give his life. If

  144. if Judas is just sort of caught between

  145. the these two things, these spiritual

  146. things that are a foot,

  147. can he really be held accountable

  148. for what he did, the part he played?

  149. Do you know we are not just helpless

  150. porns in some great cosmic contest?

  151. We are real moral beings who are held

  152. accountable for what we do or don't do.

  153. Judas may have been caught up in

  154. something much greater, much bigger than

  155. he ever realized. But he did know

  156. enough.

  157. He had seen enough. He understood

  158. enough.

  159. As Jesus says halfway through verse 22,

  160. woe to that man by whom he is betrayed.

  161. That woe there is not a cry of

  162. vindictiveness.

  163. It's it's is it's more akin to the word

  164. alas. It's a cry of dis dismay and

  165. sorrow. Alas, how bad it will be for

  166. that person that betrays the son of God.

  167. Now, it' be all too easy for us from our

  168. vantage point to uh wag our fingers

  169. knowingly at Judas. What were you

  170. thinking, Judas? How could how could you

  171. have done that to your friend, to Jesus?

  172. But there's a real warning for us here,

  173. too.

  174. For if God holds us all morally

  175. accountable for what we do or don't do,

  176. then who of us is in the clear?

  177. Which of us can hold our heads up high

  178. and assert, you know, God's got nothing

  179. on me? You know, I've always honored God

  180. with with everything that I am. Not a

  181. day has gone past when I haven't treated

  182. God as God and loved him with everything

  183. I am. I've always loved others as I love

  184. myself.

  185. I've never had a single bad thought

  186. about anybody. I've never coveted

  187. anything. Never lied. Never been had a

  188. flash of anger. Never lusted. Never felt

  189. the the the flash of hatred.

  190. Can any of us really say that?

  191. If Judas is morally culpable,

  192. then so are we.

  193. We too are sinners

  194. and our only hope is not to pretend how

  195. good we are or that we have achieved a

  196. certain level of holiness.

  197. It is to look to Jesus and cry for

  198. mercy.

  199. Save me.

  200. Sadly, even with this warning, Judas

  201. still pushes on and betrays Jesus. And

  202. he doesn't cry out for mercy.

  203. We might think once you've been

  204. confronted with this, he might have

  205. second thoughts, but he goes through

  206. with it. How does he go through with it?

  207. Even when Jesus reveals that he knows

  208. what's going on. Perhaps he didn't

  209. really believe Jesus. Perhaps he

  210. thought, "Well, Jesus just got an

  211. inkling. He doesn't really know, you

  212. know, who it is.

  213. Maybe maybe it's okay." Or maybe he was

  214. just burying his head in the sand. Maybe

  215. he was thinking what he was doing wasn't

  216. really that bad. We often think that

  217. about our own sin. And it's not that

  218. bad, is it? Those people over there,

  219. they're they they're the really bad. But

  220. me, I'm I'm not that bad. Not as bad as

  221. everyone says.

  222. Or

  223. perhaps he made excuses

  224. for himself

  225. because that's what we do, isn't it? We

  226. excuse. We condemn everybody else, but

  227. we make excuses for ourselves. We're

  228. very good at that. Adam did it in the

  229. Garden of Eden. And he blamed God and

  230. Eve for his sin. The woman that you gave

  231. me, God, she gave it to me. It's your

  232. fault. It's her fault. It's not my

  233. fault. You see, excuses.

  234. We've been playing the blame game ever

  235. since. The person caught in sexual sin

  236. blames their unloving spouse. He, she

  237. should have spent more time on on me,

  238. being more affectionate or whatever. The

  239. harsh parent blames their difficult

  240. child. It's not my fault. It's my

  241. child's fault. Or we excuse our own bad

  242. behavior because, well, it's my

  243. upbringing. It's my culture. It's just

  244. the way I am. It's my condition.

  245. I think it's important to recognize

  246. there are other factors.

  247. They are a consideration in who we are.

  248. Clearly, that that is a factor.

  249. But it's so very easy to use these

  250. things as an excuse

  251. so that we don't actually have to own up

  252. and say,

  253. "I did it.

  254. I'm sorry. I was wrong.

  255. I am a sinner. I shouldn't have done

  256. that. Will you forgive me?"

  257. You know, when we're saying those

  258. things, when we've done something wrong,

  259. we always want to try and justify

  260. ourselves just a little bit. You know, I

  261. Yeah. Okay. Okay, I did it. But

  262. we just want to get that in there, don't

  263. we?

  264. Of course, when we're talking about

  265. these things, it is possible that some

  266. people blame themselves for things that

  267. aren't our fault. And we we try and take

  268. on the whole problem when it isn't

  269. actually our fault. And I'm not talking

  270. about that here.

  271. What we need to do at this point is see

  272. from Judas's sin and what Jesus says

  273. that we are moral beings who God holds

  274. accountable.

  275. And yes, there will be contributing

  276. considerations and they might be very

  277. complicated things to to to to bear in

  278. mind. But then, aren't we so thankful

  279. that God is a God who

  280. judges justly, who sees all things? He

  281. will judge fairly. Deuteronomy 32:4. He

    Deuteronomy 32:4

  282. is the rock. His works are perfect and

  283. all his ways are just. A faithful God

  284. who does no wrong. Upright and just is

  285. he.

  286. If there's any ambiguity in a situation,

  287. God will see straight through it. He

  288. will not unfairly judge anyone. He will

  289. judge perfectly and rightly.

  290. So let us not excuse our sin

  291. because we will be held accountable for

  292. our sin. And so our only hope then is

  293. Jesus. It's not excuses. It's Jesus.

  294. Judas is blindly carrying on rejecting

  295. and betraying Jesus. And that lack of

  296. repentance, that lack of confession, it

  297. is tragic for him.

  298. Matthew's gospel gives us a fuller

  299. wording of what Jesus says. It says, "It

  300. would have been better for that man if

  301. he had not been born." Do you know if

  302. you are pushing on with your sin

  303. and you know God has spoken to you about

  304. this, he's put his finger on on you and

  305. and you know he has, then stop making

  306. excuses.

  307. Stop blaming other people. Confess your

  308. sin.

  309. And the Bible tells us he is faithful

  310. and jud and will forgive you. There is

  311. forgiveness.

  312. But we have to own up, confess, and

  313. repent.

  314. Whoever you are, Jesus is your only

  315. hope.

  316. So that was one horrible fly in the

  317. ointment of an otherwise special meal.

  318. But buzzing in after that comes another

  319. and we'll look at that in our second

  320. point. Great leaders serve.

  321. Sorry to keep mentioning this fly in the

  322. ointment idea. I like the word ointment.

  323. It's a great word, isn't it? I think we

  324. should use it more, but um it's it's a

  325. helpful thought because it's it it's

  326. speaking about something that isn't

  327. fitting. It doesn't belong somewhere.

  328. So, it's like a toenail in your dinner,

  329. right? I know it's gross, isn't it? I

  330. thought that would get you. It's like a

  331. half a maggot in the red apple you've

  332. just bitten into. You go, "What are you

  333. doing here? That's just disgusting. You

  334. don't belong." And we might think

  335. similarly about the next verses we read

  336. in verse 24.

  337. A dispute also arose among them as to

  338. which of them was to be regarded as the

  339. greatest.

  340. Of all the times they have this

  341. argument, clearly they haven't grasped

  342. what is going on. Jesus will be dead in

  343. less than 24 hours, having performed the

  344. greatest act of sacrifice ever.

  345. And they are arguing about who is the

  346. greatest.

  347. They're missing their moment because of

  348. how self-absorbed they are.

  349. How did this come to this point at this

  350. special meal? Matthew's gospel tells us

  351. that they all started to deny it when

  352. Jesus said that one of you will betray

  353. us or betray him. So perhaps it's not

  354. too hard to imagine that that could lead

  355. onto a more assertive defense. So, you

  356. know, I I wouldn't be me. I would never

  357. betray Jesus. You know, I've been with

  358. Jesus for for years and I'm always the

  359. first to volunteer. And someone else

  360. might say, "Well, yeah, well, maybe."

  361. But Jesus always comes to me if he wants

  362. some crowd control. you know, I I I

  363. would stand with Jesus. Yeah. But what

  364. about me? And you can sort of see maybe

  365. that that jostling for for position,

  366. whatever led to this point, suddenly in

  367. this this precious time,

  368. they're arguing about who is the

  369. greatest. Again, we can look at them

  370. with the benefit of hindsight and wonder

  371. what were you thinking? Why would you do

  372. this at this particular moment?

  373. But are we so different?

  374. If we feel

  375. we are being overlooked

  376. or that someone else is getting just a

  377. little bit too much praise and you

  378. think, well, what about me? You know, we

  379. all know that, don't we? It's very easy

  380. to pop into the conversation a few

  381. wellplaced hints to enhance how we

  382. appear to others. I was just doing this

  383. other thing this other day. thought I

  384. could you know it's very easy

  385. we might be more subtle about it but but

  386. there is always this temptation that we

  387. want to be admired we want to be

  388. perceived as more important and better

  389. than everybody else and so Jesus draws

  390. this a contrast for the disciples first

  391. he he he brings to mind this this

  392. negative example of the gentile kings

  393. and gentile kings they they were all

  394. powerful they had uh power they had

  395. money and they had everything that their

  396. kingdom could give them. And um despite

  397. living off their people's wealth, they

  398. wanted to be honored as the benefactors,

  399. the one who's blessed their people.

  400. Often that was the way like they like to

  401. be seen. And Jesus points to them as

  402. those who lord it over others and demand

  403. service and demand honor from them. He

  404. says that that's one way. That's the

  405. world's way. That's the kingdom there.

  406. Verse 26, but not so you.

  407. And then he gives them a positive

  408. example. Let the greatest be like the

  409. youngest.

  410. Let the leader be as one who serves. And

  411. in that culture, age carried uh prestige

  412. and honor. You would honor those who are

  413. older amongst you. If you were the

  414. youngest, you were the last in line. You

  415. were the least important really in that

  416. culture. Um that was that was just how

  417. it was and and that is what they are to

  418. be like. Not insisting on my rights, not

  419. pushing themselves forward and only

  420. doing things that promoted their own

  421. interests.

  422. Now Jesus isn't saying, "Let me tell you

  423. the way to greatness. If you want to be

  424. great, then serve in the lowly places

  425. and then eventually you'll get promoted

  426. and get what you want." He's saying

  427. truly great people serve.

  428. This is the way. This is this is it.

  429. Service.

  430. And Jesus knows this flies in the face

  431. of perceived wisdom. Verse 27. For who

  432. is the greater? One who recines at table

  433. or one who serves? Is it not the one who

  434. recines at table? And this seems obvious

  435. really, doesn't it?

  436. That's the way the world operates.

  437. That's the way of worldly kingdoms, but

  438. not God's kingdom. For Jesus delivers

  439. the punchline at the end of verse 27.

  440. For I am among you as the one who

  441. serves.

  442. Implicit in that is the fact that Jesus

  443. is great,

  444. greater than them all. They're all there

  445. because they think Jesus is worth

  446. following.

  447. He is the leader. He is the teacher.

  448. He's the one that is greater than they

  449. even realize at this point. They they

  450. they haven't fully realized just how

  451. great Jesus is. But he's there. He is

  452. the great one amongst them. He is the

  453. most important person in the universe.

  454. And he's not sitting there with his feet

  455. up expecting everyone else to run around

  456. attending to his his every need. No, he

  457. says he he is among them as one who

  458. serves. And as Jesus said that, that

  459. would have hit like a sledgehammer

  460. because John's gospel has reported how

  461. he had already in that supper uh washed

  462. their feet. He'd already taken the

  463. position of the lowest servant. He's

  464. already done it. He's already proved it.

  465. How wrong we get it sometimes, don't we?

  466. when we assume that others should be

  467. serving us. Isn't this why it's so

  468. important that we keep our eyes fixed on

  469. Jesus and not on ourselves?

  470. Isn't this why it's really important

  471. that we continue to come and meet around

  472. the Lord's supper? Because that's good

  473. for our ongoing spiritual health because

  474. it reminds us of what Jesus did. He He

  475. gave himself. He came to serve.

  476. We do it in remembrance of Jesus who

  477. even though he is the son of God, he

  478. took the form of the servant, humbled

  479. himself even to death.

  480. So even worse than a toenail in your

  481. food,

  482. is when people use Christianity to puff

  483. themselves up and lord it over others.

  484. Leadership and power aren't given so

  485. that we can dominate others, but so that

  486. we can serve them.

  487. I do hope

  488. that your first impulse in church life

  489. is

  490. what can I do to help?

  491. How can I serve?

  492. Rather than what are they doing for me?

  493. What am I getting out there?

  494. I hope that's your attitude. I'm here to

  495. serve.

  496. And it kind of goes against the grain,

  497. doesn't it? But but we need not fear

  498. missing out. Jesus reassures his

  499. disciples of the rewards and privileges

  500. that they will receive for faithful

  501. service in verses 28 to 29. And uh he

  502. speaks about difficult things to

  503. understand, but uh those particular

  504. positions and privileges are given to

  505. the apostles.

  506. But all who are in Christ have been

  507. promised an inheritance and rewards and

  508. joys and privileges too. If you

  509. faithfully serve the Lord, you do not

  510. have to worry about missing out.

  511. You might not get everything you want in

  512. this life, but you won't miss out in the

  513. next. Hebrews chapter 6:10 says this,

  514. "For God is not unjust so as to overlook

  515. your work and the love that you have

  516. shown for for his name in serving the

  517. saints as you still do.

  518. to be assured as you commit yourself to

  519. a life of serving, the Lord sees what

  520. you do.

  521. Even for the least of the saints,

  522. he sees. He sees.

  523. Then the final thing that's going to

  524. take the shine off the evening is Jesus

  525. warning about approaching danger.

  526. And that's our final point.

  527. There's an approaching danger coming.

  528. Since the earliest of times, people have

  529. used watchmen to look out for danger.

  530. Um, typically a a watchman's tower would

  531. be used and that would be put up in

  532. pastures so that they could see if

  533. wolves or wild animals or robbers were

  534. coming or watch tower would put up by

  535. city so you could see if um enemies were

  536. coming to attack the the city. and um

  537. from his prophetic vantage point Jesus

  538. looks out and he sees there is danger

  539. approaching and it's approaching on two

  540. fronts. Uh so firstly it's approaching

  541. from the devil. Secondly it's

  542. approaching from people. So firstly the

  543. danger from Satan. It seems that Satan

  544. wasn't content to possess Judas.

  545. He's sniffing around the other disciples

  546. too.

  547. The you in verse 31 is plural.

  548. And some suggest that Satan is eyeing

  549. all of the disciples. He He wants them

  550. all.

  551. That may be true, but he certainly seems

  552. to have one particular disciple in his

  553. sight, Simon Peter.

  554. It's interesting to note

  555. Satan can't just do anything he wants.

  556. He's not been given free reign.

  557. He can only operate within the limits

  558. God allows him to. Now, I'm not going to

  559. pretend that I understand all of these

  560. things and how it works, cuz I don't.

  561. But I think this is reassuring for

  562. anyone who who's ever come into contact

  563. with demonic activity

  564. and you found it unsettling and and

  565. scary.

  566. But there is reassurance here in that he

  567. doesn't have free reign. The devil is

  568. extremely dangerous, but he's tethered

  569. to some degree.

  570. But in this case, he has been given

  571. permission to sift Peter. I've never

  572. sifted wheat in my life. So this is

  573. theoretical stuff. Apparently, you use a

  574. sie and lots of vigorous shaking and

  575. throwing involved. And I've read various

  576. descriptions I won't bore you with, but

  577. you know, it's the idea is you're

  578. separating the wheat from the the chaff.

  579. And this is obviously a metaphor for

  580. great trials. This great shaking, a

  581. great trial uh approaching. Severe

  582. testing is going to come upon Peter.

  583. Satan wants to test Peter to to break

  584. Peter's faith.

  585. So what's Jesus's response to this

  586. demand of Satan?

  587. It is to pray.

  588. Note Jesus doesn't pray that Peter won't

  589. be able to avoid the test, but rather

  590. that his faith will not fail.

  591. It's it's crucial that our faith doesn't

  592. fail because it's as we thought about at

  593. the beginning is we were saved through

  594. faith.

  595. Faith is the channel that connects us to

  596. the savior and all that is in him. We

  597. are saved through faith by grace. If the

  598. faith is no longer there, then how are

  599. we connected to Jesus?

  600. So Jesus prays that his faith won't

  601. fail.

  602. We look again uh what uh Jesus says in

  603. verse 32. Because actually when we just

  604. think about this we might think well

  605. hang on a moment because Jesus prayed

  606. that his faith wouldn't fail and yet it

  607. looks like his faith did fail because he

  608. messed up big time didn't he Peter he

  609. denied Jesus so so let's just look again

  610. verse 32 but I have prayed for you that

  611. your faith may not fail

  612. and when you have turned again

  613. strengthen your brothers that tells us

  614. quite a few things but at least two

  615. things I'm going to point out so first

  616. of all it tells Peter's faith would fail

  617. in that instance right then there

  618. horribly shamefully he would deny Jesus.

  619. He would be so fearful that he was going

  620. to deny Jesus. Secondly, it shows us it

  621. wasn't permanent because Jesus says when

  622. you have turned again. So although

  623. Peter's faith is going to take a massive

  624. nose dive and hit the ground and fail

  625. temporarily, by the grace of God, he's

  626. led to repentance, he soarses right back

  627. up to a life of love and dedication and

  628. service.

  629. So why does Jesus allow him to go

  630. through this temporary shaking,

  631. maybe even failure of his faith? But

  632. we're not told. But we need to remember

  633. that God's plan is greater and wiser

  634. than we will ever be. So there might be

  635. many, many reasons why he was allowed to

  636. go through this when Jesus knew what was

  637. going to happen.

  638. In allowing Peter to fall as he did,

  639. Peter becomes the poster boy for every

  640. other Christian failure out there.

  641. If the disciples had done everything

  642. perfectly, had never got anything wrong,

  643. then what hope would we have?

  644. But in Peter, we have the reassurance

  645. that the guy sinned. He really messed

  646. up. It was not a great moment. And yet,

  647. that was not the end of his story. I'm

  648. sure we'll talk about this more as we we

  649. get work our way through the the verses

  650. um and the story. in coming weeks. But

  651. Peter's failure has been a help to to

  652. millions of Christians throughout

  653. history, hasn't it? Those who've

  654. struggled with failure, who've sinned,

  655. we realize

  656. that doesn't have to be the end. In

  657. Jesus, there is hope and there is

  658. forgiveness and he can pick me up and

  659. restore me. And even when I failed, he

  660. can still use me. that sin does not have

  661. to be the end of you.

  662. As well as being helpful for us to look

  663. at Peter and his failure and

  664. restoration, it's an important lesson

  665. for Peter as well. This didn't justify

  666. his sin, but in going through this

  667. experience, it contributed to who Peter

  668. became. It would be a constant help for

  669. him as he shepherded other disciples in

  670. all their mess and their failures. But

  671. you know, it's the person who thinks

  672. they've never done anything wrong.

  673. They can often be quite harsh.

  674. They can forget grace. They can forget

  675. mercy because they're so full of how

  676. good they are. When other people don't

  677. quite measure up, they're like, "Oh, you

  678. sinner."

  679. You know, there's no mercy there.

  680. There's no grace there. But for the

  681. person who have failed and made a right

  682. mess of it, for the person who knows,

  683. man, I need Jesus. when they come across

  684. other believers who are messing up, they

  685. go, "Yeah, I know how how that is.

  686. There's mercy. There's grace. You you're

  687. patient with them. You're gracious to

  688. them. When you see them failing and go,

  689. "Well, that's a bad situation you've got

  690. yourself into. Let me help you."

  691. And so, as Peter shepherded other

  692. believers,

  693. he's got this gracious backdrop

  694. informing how he is.

  695. Another lesson our failures teach us is

  696. that our own weakness,

  697. our own weakness. Yeah. I I dare not go

  698. it alone.

  699. I need Jesus. And Peter needs to learn

  700. this because look at how he responds to

  701. this when Jesus says you, you know,

  702. you're going to deny me. He says in

  703. verse 33,

  704. Peter Peter said to him, Lord, I am

  705. ready to go with you both to prison and

  706. to death. And no doubt he really

  707. believed that when he said that. But the

  708. truth is if we are trusting in our own

  709. ability, if we are trusting in our own

  710. strength, it's not going to be enough.

  711. It won't see us through. At some point

  712. it will fail. And Peter needs to stop

  713. trusting in his own strength and come to

  714. the lifesaving realization.

  715. I need Jesus.

  716. I can't do this on my own. I need Jesus

  717. not just to save me now but to keep me

  718. throughout my life too. I need the good

  719. shepherd. This is why the right response

  720. to trials is prayer. Lord strengthen me.

  721. Lord keep me. Lord help my faith not to

  722. fail because on my own I will.

  723. So there's the danger from the devil

  724. very very briefly. This is very briefly

  725. danger from the world. In Matthew's

  726. parallel account, uh Jesus says, "You

  727. will all fall away because of me on this

  728. night. For it is written, I will strike

  729. the shepherd and the sheep of the flock

  730. will be scattered." As of that night,

  731. Jesus would no longer be with them in

  732. the same way that he had been. Uh and so

  733. Jesus refers to a previous mission that

  734. they had gone out. He sent them out. He

  735. said, "Don't take any provisions. Um the

  736. Lord will provide." And that was an

  737. exercise in learning to trust the Lord.

  738. Wherever they went, he would provide for

  739. them. And that's an important lesson to

  740. learn.

  741. But Jesus now tells them, well, these

  742. are different times. A different uh

  743. approach is required. And he says, now

  744. you need to take the proper

  745. preparations.

  746. Times are dangerous. Times are going to

  747. be difficult. There's going to be all

  748. sorts of oppositions and things that you

  749. didn't face before.

  750. Times are going to be dangerous. And

  751. those are the days we live in, too.

  752. So, we are to take precautions. We are

  753. to be on our guard. Jesus says in

  754. Matthew 10:16, there's a when he's

    Matthew 10:16

  755. warning about persecution, he says,

  756. "Behold, I'm sending you out as sheep in

  757. the midst of wolves, so be wise as

  758. serpents and innocent as doves. Beware

  759. of men, for they will deliver you over

  760. to the courts and fogg you in their

  761. synagogues." Those are the days that we

  762. live in. And so, as believers, we are to

  763. we are to try and help each other. We

  764. are to support each other. to look out

  765. for each other and and especially those

  766. who who go abroad as missionaries or in

  767. other countries who've been persecuted.

  768. We are to try to help each other

  769. practically, prayerfully, wisefully,

  770. wisely, and sacrificially. And as we we

  771. think about this life mission 2026, what

  772. do we do? Do we do it in our own

  773. strength? We go, "We've got this. We can

  774. do this, church. Come on." No, we go,

  775. "We we've not got this. We can't do

  776. this. We're too scared to even speak

  777. about speak to our friends about Jesus.

  778. So, you know, we need some help here,

  779. don't we? We need some help.

  780. We need Jesus. We dare not go it alone.

  781. We dare not think that North Bradley

  782. Baptist Church is enough or that I or

  783. you are enough. We dare not proceed

  784. without prayer and planning as we think

  785. about these things.

  786. But even as we find ourselves in

  787. spiritual warfare,

  788. there is comfort.

  789. For remember, the devil doesn't have

  790. free reign.

  791. Despite all the evil of men, despite

  792. even Judas or powerful political

  793. figures, God's purposes will be

  794. achieved.

  795. And our good shepherd watches over us.

  796. And even now, he intercedes for us. Even

  797. now he prays for us that our faith will

  798. not fail. Even in the face of great

  799. difficulty and struggles that you are

  800. facing,

  801. whatever flies occur in your ointment

  802. this week, whatever trials you face,

  803. whatever challenges come our way as a

  804. church, remember, cling to Jesus.

  805. He is our hope in life and in death.

  806. Let's just be quiet before the Lord.

  807. Father, we come before you as as a needy

  808. people, as a people who look to you.

  809. We recognize that we by worldly

  810. standards, we are weak, largely

  811. insignificant.

  812. And so Lord, we we we pray um for your

  813. help. Uh Lord, we recognize that even

  814. just getting through one day can be a

  815. challenge sometimes. Lord, we recognize

  816. that we are in a spiritual battle. And

  817. so Lord, we come to you as your people.

  818. We draw near to you, praying that you

  819. will draw near to us. Lord, we thank you

  820. that the one who is in us is greater

  821. than the one who is in the world. And we

  822. thank you uh that you are over all

  823. things. You are the sovereign God. And

  824. Father, we confess we do not understand

  825. so much of what is going on in our

  826. world. We don't understand so much of

  827. what is going on in our own lives. And

  828. Father, we we don't want to go through

  829. trials and struggles and testing. And

  830. yet, Lord, we submit ourselves to you as

  831. those who trust in you. As those who put

  832. our faith in you, who those who say you

  833. are God and you know best.

  834. So Lord, we pray that you'd help our

  835. faith not to fail. Help us always to

  836. look to Jesus, to cling to Jesus. Give

  837. us the strength we pray in Jesus name.

  838. Amen.
