  1. Well, I've discovered um that at certain

  2. ages as as I've sort of aged, certain

  3. milestones that the doctor will call you

  4. in for health checks or to provide

  5. certain samples just to make sure that

  6. everything is okay. And that's a good

  7. thing. Of course, you want to someone to

  8. check things out, make sure you know,

  9. yep, everything's good. Carry on.

  10. It's not so good though if they do find

  11. something that is wrong.

  12. So if you are called in and the doctor

  13. sits you down and explains unfortunately

  14. they've discovered

  15. let's say cancer.

  16. And if that happens to you, what comes

  17. out of the doctor's mouth next

  18. is critical.

  19. Is he going to say, "Yes, you have

  20. cancer, but it's treatable."

  21. Or will she say, "You have cancer, but

  22. it it is not treatable." What follows

  23. that awful diagnosis

  24. changes everything.

  25. And humanity has an awful diagnosis. We

  26. are sinners.

  27. And what follows that diagnosis

  28. is critical. If left untreated, our sin

  29. will kill us. We will die.

  30. But the good news is it is treatable.

  31. And the treatment is Jesus. And the good

  32. news is is that Jesus changes

  33. everything.

  34. Jesus deals with our sin.

  35. He gives us a sense of worth,

  36. of purpose,

  37. of meaning.

  38. He transforms our understanding of our

  39. current circumstances and the

  40. difficulties that we face. He transforms

  41. our understanding of our world and and

  42. our place in the world. He transforms

  43. our understanding of life and death.

  44. Jesus changes everything. And then this

  45. is what baptism symbolizes.

  46. A great change has taken place. I now

  47. have a new life in Jesus.

  48. And that's what these two disciples

  49. desperately needed as they are walking

  50. along this road because at the moment

  51. their world had fallen apart and they

  52. can't see Jesus. And that's our first

  53. point. They are blind to Jesus.

  54. Now, this account takes place on the

  55. very day that Jesus rose to life and uh

  56. the news of his resurrection was just

  57. beginning to break. Uh but these guys,

  58. they've heard the rumors, the stories,

  59. but they don't believe yet. We see that

  60. in the whole way that they are that they

  61. don't believe yet. They're not quite

  62. there. So, who are these disciples?

  63. Little is known about them. Uh they

  64. could be a husband and wife. They could

  65. just possibly be two friends. Uh we know

  66. one of the the names from verse 18,

  67. Cleopaz, but it's and it's likely that

  68. they live in the village called Emmas,

  69. which there's a little arrow pointing

  70. from Jerusalem to Emmas on the screen

  71. there. You can now move that slide on.

  72. Thank you. But what's sad about these

  73. two disciples is that they have lost

  74. their hope. Look at verse 21.

  75. We had hoped.

  76. That's past tense. Now they don't they

  77. don't know what to think. And when Jesus

  78. asks them what they're talking about,

  79. they look sad. They look glum. They look

  80. downcast. They are the conversation

  81. isn't a a hopefilled conversation. What

  82. if it's true? What if he really is

  83. alive? That's not the the the manner of

  84. the the the mood of their conversation.

  85. So what are they talking about? Well, as

  86. they left Jerusalem, they would be

  87. talking about all that had happened.

  88. That would surely cover things like the

  89. betrayal, the arrest of Jesus, his

  90. trial, his suffering, his crucifixion.

  91. And then what about these confusing

  92. reports that we've heard

  93. long time ago? And when I was a child,

  94. our parents would often make us go out

  95. for a walk. As a child, I didn't really

  96. like walking. you know, you take 10

  97. steps, you're like, "Oh, are we nearly

  98. there yet? Can I have a piggy back?" You

  99. know, and it's like, "Oh, you don't

  100. really want to walk as a child." But

  101. actually, sometimes you really enjoy a

  102. walk as a child, kicking the leaves

  103. about, running about, having fun. A walk

  104. is good, isn't it? It's good for us

  105. physically, mentally, spiritually, and a

  106. walk is good for conversation, too. And

  107. their walk would have lasted between two

  108. or two and a half hours. So there's

  109. plenty of time for depressing discussion

  110. to go on. And when Jesus catches up with

  111. them, he asks what they're talking

  112. about. For them, there is only one

  113. possibility, one topic that they could

  114. be talking about.

  115. It's like if something dramatic happens

  116. in the world like remember back when

  117. that that the queen died or when we left

  118. Europe or even when it's Christmas time

  119. or when it's holiday time all those

  120. things you know there's something you

  121. can go to to talk about

  122. those become the topic of conversation

  123. and in in their minds the only possible

  124. topic of conversation is what had just

  125. happened to Jesus verse verse 18

  126. everyone in Jerusale M knew about this

  127. and presumably everyone was talking

  128. about this but Jesus wants to draw out

  129. of them what do you understand what do

  130. they understand by what's happened so he

  131. asks them in verse 19 oh what things

  132. and their reply is revealing they reveal

  133. who they think Jesus was verse 19

  134. a man who was a prophet mighty indeed is

  135. my mic oh it It's working. Yeah. Sorry.

  136. No, it's okay. It just didn't I couldn't

  137. hear myself booming. But as long as you

  138. can hear me, that's the main thing.

  139. Right. Back to verse 19. A man who was a

  140. prophet, mighty indeed and and word

  141. before God and all the people. And in

  142. verse 21, how they had hoped he would

  143. redeem Israel. They had hoped he was the

  144. Messiah.

  145. But now,

  146. and then they share how now even his

  147. body was missing.

  148. There's been reports that he's alive,

  149. but he hasn't been seen. And so they are

  150. they are sad. Their hope has been

  151. dashed. That these there's these

  152. unbelievable claims being made about

  153. him.

  154. But as for them, well, they think it's

  155. all over. So they are leaving Jerusalem.

  156. They have no need to stay. However long

  157. they have invested in following Jesus,

  158. surely that is now all wasted. Whatever

  159. hope they had for the future, that is

  160. now gone. And so they're going home.

  161. It's done. It's over. This is a

  162. conversation of despair and loss and

  163. confusion.

  164. And if Jesus hadn't risen from the dead,

  165. they would be right, wouldn't they?

  166. A Christianity where Jesus remained dead

  167. would be hopeless.

  168. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:14,

    1 Corinthians 15:14

  169. "And if Christ has not been raised, then

  170. our preaching is in vain and your faith

  171. is in vain. If our faith is in vain,

  172. then then what a waste of our time and

  173. our lives." You know, what are we doing

  174. here? What are we dunking people in

  175. water for? If if it's all just based on

  176. nothing,

  177. if Jesus didn't rise,

  178. then all we have is just these handful

  179. of decades that we might be able to get

  180. out of life. And if we get a a lucky go

  181. of it, if we get, you know, a bit of

  182. happiness in there, well, that's good.

  183. But if we don't, well, that's just

  184. tough. Then

  185. how utterly depressing. There's no hope,

  186. no point, no even in our pain and our

  187. heartbreak that it's all meaningless.

  188. How utterly depressing that is. And I I

  189. guess that's why so many people fill

  190. their lives

  191. with anything to make ourselves feel

  192. better. You know, drugs,

  193. drink, pleasure, spending, mindless

  194. scrolling, entertain me, you know, do

  195. something. just take my mind off reality

  196. because if there is no hope then it how

  197. can we cope like that?

  198. Block out those thoughts of hopelessness

  199. and senselessness

  200. that people desperately want something

  201. to live for. We know deep down we know

  202. that there is something more than just

  203. living. There's something more than just

  204. struggling and getting through. We know

  205. that intrinsically that that's how we're

  206. built. We know it's not just about

  207. living and then dying and then that's

  208. it.

  209. But if Jesus was dead, then actually

  210. there is nothing more.

  211. There's nothing more meaningful. There's

  212. nothing to hope for. There's no no

  213. future.

  214. Perhaps there is someone here who used

  215. to have a hope in Jesus.

  216. You used to have purpose. You used to

  217. have meaning. You used to have a faith.

  218. But now that hope, that faith, that

  219. vision of Jesus, somewhere along the

  220. line, perhaps it's lost or getting lost.

  221. This is the road the disciples were

  222. walking down. A road of disappointment

  223. in Jesus, a road of lost faith.

  224. And yet, that is not how their story

  225. ends. And if you think that's you and

  226. you feel like your vision of Jesus is is

  227. becoming dull and you're losing it, that

  228. is not how your story has to end too

  229. because Jesus isn't dead. Jesus rose to

  230. life again. And unbeknown to these

  231. disciples, he is actually with them at

  232. that very moment.

  233. Currently, they're blind to him. They

  234. don't recognize him. They don't see him.

  235. They don't understand. But Jesus is

  236. there just the same believer. Sometimes

  237. we can feel distant to God. Sometimes we

  238. feel like I just doesn't feel like God

  239. is here or with me and I don't know that

  240. closeness that fellowship and we can

  241. feel so discouraged. But believer if you

  242. are in Jesus despite how you might feel

  243. he is not distant. He is still with you.

  244. Even if you can't see it right at that

  245. moment, he is still there.

  246. Well, the slowness to believe earns them

  247. a rebuke because given what they had,

  248. given what they knew, they should have

  249. known better. They should have believed.

  250. Jesus isn't going to leave them in that

  251. sorrowful state. He's going to show them

  252. himself and he's going to do that in the

  253. scriptures. And that's our second point,

  254. seeing Jesus.

  255. I wonder if you can think back um

  256. through your life and there's certain

  257. moments that you you enjoy. You know,

  258. you look back and you think that that

  259. was a high point in my life. Maybe it's

  260. a holiday. You look back and you think,

  261. "Yeah, I was really happy on that

  262. holiday." Or maybe it's if you got

  263. married, you might look back and that

  264. that was a really happy day. I was re

  265. really happy. or maybe if you've had a

  266. child when your your child was born or

  267. or maybe it's when you retired you think

  268. that was a great day. Um special moments

  269. we can sort of look back throughout our

  270. lives and go, "Yeah, that that was a

  271. good time. That was a good season, a

  272. good period." Yeah. I wonder if having a

  273. Bible study is one of those moments you

  274. go you look back and go, "Yeah, that was

  275. a great Bible study." Maybe they haven't

  276. quite reached that pinnacle for you. I

  277. don't know. come along to our church

  278. Bible studies and it might be different,

  279. you know, you never know. But um

  280. listening to a sermon, maybe maybe you

  281. can remember a certain sermon go, yeah,

  282. I remember like Noah was saying in his

  283. testimony, he can remember that preacher

  284. and how the Lord spoke to him through

  285. that that sermon.

  286. These disciples as they listened to

  287. Jesus open the scriptures,

  288. there was something special. They didn't

  289. want to be anywhere else at that

  290. particular point.

  291. Now to be fair, studying the Bible can

  292. be deathly dull. In my teens, in our

  293. youth group, we used to we uh meet

  294. weekly and we had a Bible study and it

  295. was so boring.

  296. It probably says more about my spiritual

  297. state than the person leading, but it

  298. was just like

  299. really going through the questions

  300. reading and then someone else came in

  301. and they took over leading the youth

  302. group and the difference was amazing.

  303. Suddenly we we realized the Bible can be

  304. thrilling. It can be exciting and as as

  305. teenagers we were into it. We were like,

  306. "Yeah, let's let's let's read the Bible.

  307. Let's talk about it." It was amazing.

  308. And as teenagers, we were really excited

  309. about the Lord and studying the word.

  310. That's what I would love for each one of

  311. us here to discover

  312. that in the scriptures, we meet Jesus.

  313. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we can

  314. understand and we know about God. It's a

  315. real It's a real thing.

  316. But as for these disciples, they they've

  317. been kept from recognizing Jesus. that

  318. that suggests that there's something

  319. external, some supernatural concealing

  320. going on. Why have they been kept from

  321. recognizing Jesus? But we're not told

  322. why. But I would suggest there's at

  323. least two reasons why. So if they

  324. immediately recognize Jesus, like, oh,

  325. it's Jesus. Great. Anything else on that

  326. point would be really hard to take in.

  327. You know, it's like if you're at school,

  328. remember back to your school days, and

  329. it snows in the middle of a class.

  330. You're not going to do much learning

  331. from that point on, are you? You're

  332. looking out the window, counting down to

  333. the minutes before you can go out and

  334. play in the snow. Any learning is just,

  335. you know, gone. Your mind concentration

  336. is gone. And if Jesus wants to teach

  337. them something, they need to be able to

  338. be in a place where they can learn. And

  339. perhaps that's why he is kept from them.

  340. that is in recognizing uh they're kept

  341. from recognizing him. They've got

  342. something important to learn. But second

  343. reason why perhaps they are kept from

  344. recognizing him is physically seeing

  345. Jesus isn't going to be the norm from

  346. that point on. And so Jesus is opening

  347. their eyes to how they can see him from

  348. that point on and they can see him in

  349. the scriptures. So this may be a kind of

  350. acted out parable. So right now their

  351. lack of physical comprehension, they

  352. can't really understand who Jesus is.

  353. That mirrors their lack of spiritual

  354. comprehension.

  355. And so Jesus is going to open their eyes

  356. spiritually. And then we'll see their

  357. physical eyes are opened a bit later on,

  358. but he's going to open their eyes

  359. spiritually through the Old Testament.

  360. I don't know about you, but wouldn't you

  361. have just loved to be in on this Bible

  362. study that Jesus gives them? It it would

  363. have been fantastic. What a Bible study

  364. to be a part of that. They say their

  365. hearts are burning within them.

  366. It's interesting. Noah said about how

  367. his his heart was beating in his chest.

  368. Maybe that maybe their hearts were

  369. beating in their chest.

  370. I I picture this a bit like you're in a

  371. grand

  372. um theater, a big stage. Can you can you

  373. see it? Big stage. The seats are all

  374. going up there, but the stage is in

  375. complete darkness. You can't see

  376. anything.

  377. And as Jesus speaks,

  378. it's like a big spotlight is thrown on

  379. and it illuminates part. And then Jesus

  380. carries on another spotlight and another

  381. and another. And as he walks them

  382. through the Old Testament, it's like the

  383. whole thing begins to be illuminated.

  384. and and their understanding is like yes

  385. I see I see I see

  386. Jesus is using the scriptures to

  387. illuminate their minds and it's

  388. thrilling so what did Jesus say

  389. well verse 26 Jesus is proving from the

  390. scriptures that the Christ or the

  391. Messiah had to suffer this wasn't a

  392. tragic mistake this was the very plan of

  393. God woven throughout scriptures coming

  394. to fruition in Jesus so perhaps he took

  395. them back to Genesis 3:5 15, you know,

    Genesis 3:5

  396. he shall bruise your head and you shall

  397. bruise his heel. Or perhaps he took them

  398. to Abraham about when Abraham was about

  399. to sacrifice his son Isaac and God

  400. provided the ram that substitution.

  401. Perhaps he spoke about himself in that

  402. that context.

  403. Perhaps he took them back to the

  404. Passover and explained the significance

  405. of how Jesus died on the cross so that

  406. the judgment passes over those who are

  407. saved by the blood of the lamb. Did

  408. Jesus take them to the sacrifices in

  409. Leviticus and and show them why they had

  410. to be spotless and pure and holy? Did he

  411. take them back to that that point in the

  412. desert when Moses lifted up the bronze

  413. snake so that all who looked and and in

  414. believing faith at that snake they would

  415. be saved? Did he say and that stands for

  416. me as I was lifted up on the cross? Did

  417. he take them through Psalm 22 and show

  418. them how David had predicted so much of

  419. what had happened to Jesus? And and

  420. surely he would have taken them to to

  421. Isaiah portions of Isaiah 53

  422. where we are shown how Jesus the servant

  423. had to be wounded for our

  424. transgressions. How the Lord laid on him

  425. the sin, the iniquity of of us all.

  426. There's many places Jesus could have

  427. taken them. In fact, it says in verse

  428. 27, how Jesus explained to them what was

  429. said in all the scriptures concerning

  430. himself. And that, by the way, is the

  431. right way to read your Old Testament, to

  432. view your Old Testament. It's is old.

  433. The Old Testament is set in history. It

  434. has an historic and primary meaning, but

  435. all of scripture in one way or another

  436. also points forward to and is fulfilled

  437. in Christ. So in the Old Testament there

  438. are shadows, there are pointers, there

  439. are predictions, there are examples,

  440. there are patterns, there are plans and

  441. it all leads to it all finds its

  442. fulfillment in Christ.

  443. What the Old Testament does is it

  444. fleshes out the background. It shows us,

  445. it demonstrates, it it it it it tells

  446. the story that we need to understand of

  447. man's fall, of our sin, of how we keep

  448. going away, we keep rebelling, and so

  449. God has to come in and he has to do it

  450. all. It fleshes that out for us. It

  451. shows us his mission. The old gives the

  452. new its context. And that's why so many

  453. New Testament authors keep referring

  454. back to the old because the new is the

  455. fulfillment of what was antic

  456. anticipated, illustrated, and promised.

  457. Jesus says as much in John 5:39.

    John 5:39

  458. He said, "You search the scriptures

  459. because you think in them you have

  460. eternal life, and it is they, the

  461. scriptures, that bear witness about me."

  462. Jesus claimed this for himself. This is

  463. what Philip said in John 1:45. We have

    John 1:45

  464. found him of whom Moses in the law and

  465. also the prophets wrote. Jesus of

  466. Nazareth, the son of Joseph. So parts of

  467. the Old Testament, they can be hard to

  468. understand, but it's always a good

  469. question to bear in mind. What's this

  470. telling me? What's this showing me about

  471. Christ? And as Jesus spoke, as Jesus the

  472. Messiah and his mission and his

  473. sufferings and his death, it began to

  474. make sense. The lights were being thrown

  475. on in their their mind and

  476. understanding.

  477. Now we don't have Jesus physically here

  478. with us teaching us in that way. But we

  479. do have his spirit who teaches us, who

  480. enables us to understand, who opens our

  481. eyes spiritually. And we have his word,

  482. don't we? The scripture and the spirit

  483. show us Jesus and and Jesus changes

  484. everything. If you've lost your hope,

  485. then come back to Jesus.

  486. Open up his word again. Read a gospel.

  487. Take a walk with the Savior once more.

  488. Well, as Jesus walked with them and gave

  489. them the the Bible study like no other,

  490. it must have been one of the highlights

  491. of their life.

  492. A moment uh they look back on with great

  493. joy and wish it had never ended. But as

  494. they near Emmas,

  495. it's naturally going to come to an end

  496. because they're there. They've arrived.

  497. They're home.

  498. But they're not ready for it to end

  499. because there's just something about

  500. this guy. And so verse 29, they urge him

  501. strongly. It's almost to the point of

  502. embarrassment. They are saying, "No, you

  503. you please you you cannot go on. Stay

  504. with us." And it is quite a reasonable

  505. request. After all, people didn't really

  506. travel in the dark. You had risk of

  507. robbers or wild animals or it was

  508. dangerous because there were no street

  509. lamps. You could fall down a hole or

  510. walk off a cliff. It was it was didn't

  511. generally travel at night. Uh but Jesus,

  512. it seems to me Jesus is giving them an

  513. opt out. If they've had enough, if they

  514. don't want him, then he's just going to

  515. carry on. But what are they saying? No,

  516. you you can't leave. You can't go. We We

  517. want you. Come into our home.

  518. Jesus is happy to spend time with those

  519. who want him.

  520. How slow

  521. are we to take the time to read our

  522. Bibles?

  523. How quickly we close them

  524. without really thinking about what we've

  525. read? You know, it's like, I've done my

  526. bit. I can tick my box.

  527. What about spending a little bit of time

  528. thinking, "Wow, that was hard to

  529. understand, but what could it mean?"

  530. Actually thinking about it. You know

  531. how slow we can be to come to home

  532. groups or Bible studies or even to just

  533. church.

  534. That's sad when that's the situation

  535. because hopefully if if you want to know

  536. the Lord, you're going to want to

  537. continue to seek him and and and be with

  538. him and know more about him. They don't

  539. want this to be over. their spiritual

  540. eyes, their hearts have been opened. And

  541. so they open their home to Jesus. And

  542. it's as Jesus breaks their breaks the

  543. bread, their physical eyes are opened.

  544. Perhaps it was something in the way he

  545. broke it. And they thought that's like

  546. Jesus. Perhaps they saw the nail marks

  547. in his hands. Or perhaps it was just

  548. that Jesus had now shown them what he

  549. wanted. Uh they'd seen him in the

  550. scriptures. And to illustrate that and

  551. to authenticate that, now they see him

  552. in reality. They see him with their eyes

  553. physically right there and then he's

  554. gone.

  555. But now

  556. everything has changed. Everything has

  557. changed. And we'll see that in our final

  558. point. Excited by joy.

  559. We recently um spent a few days in North

  560. Devon and uh as is always the case with

  561. British weather. Uh it was interesting.

  562. Um and it was it was interesting. Um so

  563. one day it started off clear and we

  564. thought that's great. It's a lovely day.

  565. We'll take a walk around Baggy Point if

  566. you know the walk. And um about halfway

  567. round suddenly the mist descended and

  568. visibility was quite limited and

  569. everything just faded away into white.

  570. It was it was lovely. It was you know it

  571. was a lovely thing to see. But the next

  572. day, the sun was out and the quality of

  573. the light was so brilliant that we all

  574. remarked on how vivid everything was,

  575. how crystal clear everything appeared.

  576. The details were so crisp. I felt like

  577. someone had given me a new pair of

  578. glasses or a new set of eyeballs. It was

  579. like I just don't remember seeing this

  580. clearly. It was just amazing. A a kind

  581. of almost magical super realistic light.

  582. It was amazing. The difference from one

  583. day misty to the next. Clarity was

  584. significant. And for these two

  585. disciples, everything has changed. They

  586. were walking away from Jerusalem.

  587. And now they leave their food and they

  588. head back to Jerusalem. Despite the

  589. darkness, something has changed.

  590. Something big has changed for them. They

  591. left the other disciples. Now they go

  592. back to them. They left with their hopes

  593. dashed, glum, dismayed, thinking it's

  594. all over. It's all finished. But now

  595. their hope hope burns brighter than

  596. ever. Their hearts are burning. They

  597. left thinking they had lost Jesus and

  598. that Jesus's mission had failed and it

  599. was all over. But now Jesus has found

  600. them, set their hearts on fire. He'd

  601. showed them and this is exactly what was

  602. meant to take place. This was all part

  603. of God's plan. And so their grief has

  604. been turned to joy.

  605. God and his plans have not been

  606. frustrated.

  607. Rather, God's plan of redemption has

  608. been fulfilled. And their lives

  609. following Jesus hasn't been a waste.

  610. It's not defeat. It's victory because

  611. Jesus is alive.

  612. how did their return jour how how

  613. different their return journey must have

  614. been. How different their conversation

  615. must have been.

  616. And they knew they had important news

  617. about Jesus that they couldn't just keep

  618. for themselves. They couldn't just say,

  619. "Oh, well, we're just going not going to

  620. tell anyone." They had to share this.

  621. You know, they're thinking the brothers

  622. back in Jerusalem were still in

  623. confusion. They still don't know. We've

  624. got to share this good news of Jesus,

  625. haven't we? We can't just keep it to

  626. ourselves. And for those of us who know

  627. there is a savior, we have a good news

  628. that needs to be shared. People need to

  629. know this. People are crying out. This

  630. is the meaning that the the point of

  631. life that that that people need. It is

  632. what saves them. This believing faith in

  633. the Lord Jesus.

  634. It it changes everything. Jesus is not

  635. dead. He is alive. Death is not the end.

  636. There is a life in Jesus that goes on

  637. and on for eternity and it can be yours

  638. through faith in the Lord Jesus. This

  639. changes absolutely everything.

  640. I bet their 2 and 1/2 hour journey back

  641. was rather quicker than on the way

  642. there. They're not dragging their feet

  643. despite the darkness. There is a new

  644. spring in their step. They know beyond a

  645. doubt Jesus is alive and that changes

  646. everything. And as they get there,

  647. expecting to be the ones to break the

  648. the big news. Guys, guess what?

  649. But verse 34, the Lord had already

  650. appeared to Simon Peter, and they

  651. already knew. So, talk about having your

  652. thunder stolen, but no matter, they tell

  653. it anyway cuz they're just so excited.

  654. We're going to tell you anyway because

  655. the Lord appeared to us and we he did

  656. this Bible study. It was fantastic. And

  657. yeah, you can imagine the excitement in

  658. that room, can't you?

  659. I'm sure we'd all love to have been

  660. there to see those things, to see Jesus

  661. face to face. But one day, we will see

  662. Jesus face to face.

  663. But until then, we see Jesus in the

  664. scriptures. And we know him because he

  665. lives in our hearts by his holy spirit.

  666. But Jesus has promised he is coming back

  667. for us. And we will one day be with him

  668. and see him and know him like never

  669. before.

  670. So the truth of the resurrection changes

  671. everything. Things are not out of

  672. control.

  673. Things are not hopeless or futile.

  674. It's not a waste of time to follow

  675. Jesus. God's plan is bang on track. God

  676. is achieving what he wants to achieve.

  677. He is achieving good things for those

  678. who love him. Even through our struggles

  679. and our difficulties, there is a

  680. purpose. There is a goal. It's not

  681. wasted. God is making all things new.

  682. And he is preparing you. If you belong

  683. to Jesus, he's preparing you for glory

  684. to be with him in eternity. And one day,

  685. the risen Lord will return and gather us

  686. to himself. So our hope, our faith, our

  687. service, it is all worth it. That's how

  688. Paul finishes the 1 Corinthians chapter

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  689. 15, that great chapter on the

  690. resurrection. He says this, "Therefore,

  691. my beloved brothers, be steadfast,

  692. immovable,

  693. always abounding in the work of the

  694. Lord, knowing that in the Lord your

  695. labor is not in vain."

  696. Jesus's resurrection proves our labor,

  697. our faith, our hope, our following Jesus

  698. is not in vain, for he lives. So don't

  699. give up.

  700. Stand firm. Be on your guard. Seek the

  701. Lord daily. Persevere in your reading.

  702. Persevere in your prayer. Don't give up

  703. meeting with his people. And when you

  704. get the chance, share the good news with

  705. somebody.

  706. Let me just read these words from

  707. Hebrews. They should appear on the

  708. screen as well. Hebrews chapter 10 verse

    Hebrews 10:22

  709. 22. Let us draw near with a true heart

  710. in full assurance of faith with our

  711. hearts sprinkled clean from an evil

  712. conscience and our bodies washed with

  713. pure water. Let us hold fast the

  714. confession of our hope without wavering.

  715. For he who promised is faithful. And let

  716. us consider how to stir up one another

  717. to love and good works, not neglecting

  718. to meet together, as some are in the

  719. habit of of doing, but encouraging one

  720. another. And all the more as you see the

  721. day drawing near.

  722. Baptism symbolizes how we've been washed

  723. clean. How we've been united with Jesus

  724. in his death. But not only in his death,

  725. in his resurrection, too. And that

  726. changes everything. In Jesus, we have

  727. everything to live for.

  728. In Jesus, we even have everything to die

  729. for. Jesus is alive and we are alive in

  730. him. And that changes everything. Let's

  731. just be quiet before the Lord for a few

  732. moments.

  733. Father God, we thank you for this

  734. awesome truth.

  735. Lord, no matter what we face, no matter

  736. how big our struggles, no matter

  737. how severe our wobbles,

  738. Lord, we thank you that Jesus rose to

  739. life. And if we are in him, then we are

  740. risen with him. And in that sense, we

  741. can never die. Even though we die, we

  742. will not die, but we will pass into

  743. life. Father, we thank you for the truth

  744. of the gospel. We thank you that no one

  745. can snatch us out of his hands. Lord, we

  746. thank you that in him there is the

  747. complete forgiveness of sins. There is

  748. the washing clean, the renewal of

  749. ourselves. And Lord, we thank you that

  750. one day we shall see the Lord as he is.

  751. And Lord, we will be like him. Lord,

  752. what a wonderful gospel. Thrill our

  753. hearts once again. We pray in Jesus

  754. name. Amen.

  755. We're going to sing about um our the

  756. hope that we have uh in our next song uh

  757. living hope. During this time, some of

  758. us will be um going and getting changed

  759. and then we'll uh baptize Noah. So, um

  760. yeah, we'll stand to sing.
