  1. As I've uh just mentioned in my prayer,

  2. um hopefully the response of this

  3. morning's uh message will be that we

  4. worship. I've left a little bit longer

  5. at our time at the end of the service, a

  6. number of songs to help us worship

  7. rather than just our regular one or two.

  8. That's just to warn you. Um we've been

  9. going through this uh series, as I've

  10. said, um since before I came to this

  11. church. So today feels like a bit of a

  12. historic event to me. Anyway, the final

  13. sermon in Luke to celebrate. We are

  14. going to have a little quiz.

  15. So um it's a very simple one. You if you

  16. think it's true, you put your hand up

  17. when I say. If you think it's false, you

  18. put your hand up when I say. So I'm

  19. going to give to you a few questions

  20. here. Octopuses have blue blood. Put

  21. your hands up if you think that's true.

  22. Put your hands up if you think it's

  23. false.

  24. Okay, it is in fact uh true. They do

  25. have blue, very dark blue blood. Uh,

  26. next one. The human brain generates

  27. enough electricity to power a small

  28. light bulb. True. Put your hands up.

  29. True. Put your hands up if you think

  30. it's false. Some of you aren't voting. I

  31. can see you're cheating. The answer is

  32. true. Your brain generates electricity.

  33. Okay, here's one for the Scottish people

  34. amongst us. Scotland has 401 different

  35. words for snow. Do you think that's

  36. true? Hands up if you think that's true.

  37. Hands up. Hands up if you think that's

  38. false.

  39. Okay, it is in fact false. There's 421

  40. words. And examples are I can't

  41. pronounce these. I apologize. Snore,

  42. feeful, fender, and splitters. So, I

  43. don't I don't know what I've said that

  44. awfully, haven't I? I'm sorry. But there

  45. we go. So yeah, 421 words for snow is

  46. true. Bananas are slightly radioactive.

  47. Do you think that's true or do you think

  48. that's false?

  49. Okay, no one thinks that's false. Okay,

  50. they they are slightly radioactive. They

  51. contain potassium 40. A tablespoon of

  52. honey represents the lifetime work of

  53. about 12 bees. Tablespoon full of honey.

  54. You think that's 12 work? Some of you

  55. think that's true. Okay, put your hands

  56. up if you think that's false.

  57. Okay, it is indeed false. They can only

  58. produce a teaspoon, not a tablespoon.

  59. Okay, last one. There are more trees on

  60. Earth than stars in the Milky Way. Put

  61. your hands up if you think that's true.

  62. There's more trees on Earth than there

  63. are stars in the Milky Way. Anyone think

  64. that's true? One or two. Do you think

  65. that's false? Most of you think that's

  66. false force. It's actually true.

  67. Apparently, the estimate is we have 3

  68. trillion trees on the Earth versus only

  69. 100 to 400 billion stars. So, anyway,

  70. none of you got that all right, did you?

  71. Put your hands up if you think you got

  72. that all right.

  73. One, Josh got it all right. Well done,

  74. Josh. Yay. Fantastic. But sometimes true

  75. things can seem hard to believe. And

  76. when we come to the physical

  77. resurrection and ascension of Jesus into

  78. heaven, it can seem hard to believe. It

  79. certainly was for these first disciples

  80. because uh just because something is

  81. out of the ordinary, it doesn't mean

  82. it's not true. It was hard for them to

  83. believe, but just because it was

  84. unusual, just because it's hard to

  85. believe, it doesn't mean it's not true.

  86. So this was on the same day that Jesus

  87. rose to life. And then Jesus shows up to

  88. prove beyond a doubt this is no illusion

  89. he really did fully and physically rise

  90. to life. And we're going to look at that

  91. in our first point. We've only got two

  92. points this morning. So physical proof

  93. is our first point.

  94. There's no PowerPoint. Did I forget to

  95. put it up there? Oh, that's a shame.

  96. That's my bad. Okay. Anyway, n in 1984,

  97. the highly successful film called

  98. Ghostbusters was released and had a

  99. catchy theme song that went something

  100. like this. If there's something strange

  101. in your neighborhood, who you going to

  102. call?

  103. >> Ghostbusters.

  104. >> I didn't know if you're going to do

  105. that, but well done. And then it goes

  106. something like, I ain't afraid of no

  107. ghost. Whatever you think about the

  108. film, it does tap into humanity's fears

  109. that reach back into the most ancient of

  110. times. So, the ancient Mesopotamians,

  111. so around 3,000 to 2,000 BC, they

  112. believed in ghosts and they believe that

  113. they were the um spirits of of dead

  114. people.

  115. Many other cultures throughout history

  116. have had similar ideas. And our modern

  117. stories still work on the idea that a

  118. ghost is the um the spirit or the soul

  119. of someone that's died and has become

  120. separated uh from their body, detached

  121. from their body. Even the Bible hints at

  122. strange things a little bit like that.

  123. So there's the account in 1 Samuel where

  124. King Saul speaks to the spirit of Samuel

  125. after Samuel's death. So there's

  126. something going on there, isn't there?

  127. Now lest we develop an unhealthy

  128. interest in these things, we need to

  129. remember the Old Testament as strictly

  130. forbids in Deuteronomy chapter 18, it

    Deuteronomy 18 chapter mention

  131. forbids mediums,

  132. spiritists, and attempting to contact

  133. the dead. Uh it says there, "Anyone who

  134. does these things is detestable

  135. to the Lord."

  136. So, I'm not trying to

  137. get you interested in these kinds of

  138. things. We we must hear the warning. It

  139. is detestable to the Lord. It's not my

  140. intention to explore theology of ghosts

  141. this morning. Um, but to clarify, the

  142. Bible doesn't teach uh about that. It

  143. doesn't teach that the spirits of the

  144. dead people roam the earth haunting

  145. people. That that's not what the Bible

  146. teaches at all. But it does teach that

  147. at death our soul or our spirit

  148. separates from our bodies at that point

  149. of death. To illustrate that very

  150. quickly, Genesis 35:16 says um when

    Genesis 35:16

  151. Jacob's wife Rachel was dying, her soul

  152. was departing.

  153. So the body was dying and the soul was

  154. departing. Or as Jesus said to the dying

  155. thief, "Today you will be with me in

  156. paradise." Clearly not physically

  157. because his body was going to hang there

  158. dead on the cross. Today you will be

  159. with me in paradise. So his spirit would

  160. be with Jesus in paradise.

  161. Steven the first Christian martyr as he

  162. died he prayed Lord Jesus receive my

  163. spirit. So although his body would be

  164. broken and dead his spirit would go to

  165. be with the Lord. And Paul had the same

  166. desire. He his desire was to part to

  167. depart and be with the Lord be with

  168. Christ. Philippians chapter 1 23. So the

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  169. clearly the Bible speaks about a

  170. separation of body and spirit and that

  171. is what humanity has been innately aware

  172. of for thousands of years. Even if that

  173. truth is mixed in and muddled and

  174. confused and distorted by all the

  175. fiction we attach to that at the heart

  176. of it is a truth, a biblical truth. And

  177. so it's against that backdrop that when

  178. the disciples see this dead man walking

  179. they jump to the assumption it's a

  180. ghost.

  181. They are according to John 20 24 they

  182. they they're behind locked doors. They

  183. are in fear for their lives from the

  184. Jews. They are feeling jumpy on edge.

  185. What is going to happen? And then

  186. suddenly

  187. Jesus is there. They had only discovered

  188. about the empty tomb that morning. A bit

  189. earlier in the day, Peter had seen the

  190. risen Christ. We've already seen um last

  191. week how the two disciples have returned

  192. from Emmas to share the good news. They

  193. had seen the risen Christ.

  194. But it's all a bit bewildering and and

  195. baffling. And as a group, they haven't

  196. come to any firm conclusion. They they

  197. don't know what to believe. Some have

  198. seen him, some haven't. It's very

  199. confusing. And suddenly Jesus is

  200. standing there right in front of them

  201. like a ghost, like a spirit. The Bible

  202. says,

  203. "Were they all chill about it? Oh,

  204. Jesus, we were just talking about you.

  205. Come in, have a seat." No, that's not

  206. how they responded. Verse 37, but they

  207. were startled and frightened and thought

  208. they saw a ghost. The Greek word for

  209. startled there means terrified.

  210. The Bible repeats itself. They were

  211. terrified. They were terrified. That's

  212. how they felt about seeing Jesus. They

  213. were genuinely frightened at his

  214. appearance. And so Jesus's first words

  215. are highly appropriate. Verse 36, "Peace

  216. to you."

  217. Now, that was a common greeting of the

  218. day. Peace to you. But on the mouth of

  219. Jesus is much more than just a hi guys,

  220. you know, I'm here. For Jesus is the

  221. bringer of peace. He is the bringer of

  222. peace between man and God.

  223. And for Jesus, his for the disciples,

  224. his appearance means there can be a new

  225. peace in their troubled hearts. They

  226. were full of grief and sorrow and loss.

  227. And Jesus appears and says, "Peace."

  228. He brings them real peace at a time of

  229. turmoil.

  230. And those disciples, how did they feel?

  231. They had fled. They had deserted. Some

  232. of them had disowned Jesus. What does he

  233. do? Does he accuse them?

  234. He brings them peace.

  235. This is what the risen savior brings.

  236. Peace. Peace into the most inner parts

  237. of our our our souls.

  238. They certainly needed that because they

  239. think he's a ghost. And they can't sing

  240. along. I ain't afraid of no ghost.

  241. because they are very much afraid. So

  242. Jesus gently rebukes in verse 38, why

  243. are you troubled and why do doubts arise

  244. in your hearts? He's already appeared to

  245. some of them, but there's still a lot of

  246. fear and doubt and confusion. And so he

  247. offers them some physical proof. First

  248. off, the fact that he's there among

  249. them. If Jesus had just appeared to an

  250. individual here, an individual there,

  251. and just a load of individuals so that

  252. they never saw him together, well, you

  253. know what we're like, don't you? You

  254. start to doubt yourself. Did that really

  255. happen? Was I dream? Did I Did I imagine

  256. that I saw Jesus?

  257. But as Jesus appears to the group all

  258. together, this is clearly not a mass

  259. dream or mass hallucination.

  260. So they see him together. It's proof

  261. one. A and they don't just see him. They

  262. they can hear him speaking. So the

  263. physical voice box of Jesus is still

  264. working and recognizable. This isn't

  265. some ghost without a physical voice box.

  266. He's speaking to them. Proof, too.

  267. But more than that, verse 39, see my

  268. hands and my feet that it is I myself.

  269. Touch me and see. For a spirit does not

  270. have flesh and bones as you see that I

  271. have. He shows them the stigmata. So the

  272. marks, the nails, scars in his hands and

  273. feet. This is no impersonator.

  274. It's really Jesus. You can see, look,

  275. look. He's saying, "Look at my hands.

  276. Look at my feet. Look at the marks."

  277. He's inviting them to reach out to touch

  278. him. And Greek means to to grab hold of

  279. there. They could feel his arms, his

  280. muscles, his bones, the temperature of

  281. his skin, the roughness of the scars.

  282. Interestingly, Jesus doesn't deny that

  283. spirits exist. Rather, he proves he's

  284. not a mere spirit. He is physical.

  285. But they're still reeling from the

  286. events of recent days. Remember, it's

  287. only been 3 days since they had seen

  288. Jesus crucified.

  289. They can vividly recall. It's etched.

  290. It's burnt into their their minds

  291. what happened. How the crowds crying out

  292. for Jesus's crucifixion.

  293. They can still remember the the great

  294. fear that just

  295. crippled them. The shouts, the

  296. heartbreak. They can still see the blood

  297. and his lifeless corpse.

  298. That's so fresh for them.

  299. But now he stands before them and they

  300. know this is totally unbelievable.

  301. That's why we get this strange phrase

  302. that reads a bit oddly in verse 41. And

  303. why are they still disbelief for joy and

  304. we're marveling?

  305. They're in this state of believing but

  306. disbelieving.

  307. He's there. They can see him. They take

  308. they can touch him. They can hear him.

  309. Their hearts are bursting with joy

  310. because he's actually there. They're

  311. happy. And yet, how can this be? It's

  312. impossible. How can he be there? But he

  313. is.

  314. So Jesus shares another piece of proof.

  315. He's asking for some food to eat and he

  316. eats in front of them.

  317. Spirits or cadaavvers don't eat, but

  318. physical living beings do.

  319. So this wasn't easy to believe

  320. and yet Jesus proves it to be true

  321. and that is good news for us. 1 John 3:2

    1 John 3:2

  322. tells us we will be like him. So when we

  323. die, yes, our spirits depart from our

  324. body. We go to be with the Lord. But

  325. Romans chapter 8 11 says, "If the spirit

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  326. of him who raised Jesus from the dead

  327. dwells in you, he who raised Christ

  328. Jesus from the dead will also here it is

  329. give life to your mortal bodies through

  330. his spirit who dwells in you." So just

  331. as Jesus physically rose from the dead

  332. and had a physical body, so will all of

  333. those who are in Christ, we will rise

  334. from the dead in that sense and be given

  335. a a physical body. When Jesus returns,

  336. all will be made new. You will be given

  337. a real new body that is recognizable,

  338. that is truly truly you. It's not just a

  339. shadow of you, not just a a part of you.

  340. You will be truly you. You will not

  341. spend eternity floating on clouds or

  342. haunting people. You will be fully human

  343. but perfected and glorified.

  344. Some people

  345. deny that Jesus rose physically from the

  346. dead, but you can't get around this

  347. passage. Jesus appeared.

  348. He spoke. He heard. He could be touched.

  349. He was recognizable. He ate.

  350. And as bonkers as it sounded even back

  351. then, Jesus went out of his way to prove

  352. he was really physically raised from the

  353. dead. And that is the promise of God to

  354. all who are in Christ, too. That is your

  355. future if you're in Christ.

  356. So Jesus gives them physical proof. And

  357. as important as that is, that's not all

  358. he gives them. He's going to give them

  359. scriptural proof, too. And that's our

  360. final point this morning. scriptural

  361. proof.

  362. The Bible is comprised of 66 books

  363. written by around 40 different authors

  364. over a period of around 1,600

  365. years. It's written in three different

  366. languages, Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic.

  367. Composed on three different continents,

  368. Africa, Asia, and Europe. And many of

  369. the authors didn't know each other. They

  370. never met each other. And yet the Bible

  371. is marked by a striking unity.

  372. But the Bible is essentially a story

  373. about Jesus.

  374. And Jesus reminds them of what he had

  375. been saying to them when he'd been with

  376. them. So halfway through verse 44, that

  377. everything written about me in the law

  378. of Moses and the prophets and the psalms

  379. must be fulfilled. Those three different

  380. categories are essentially a way of

  381. summing up everything that is in the Old

  382. Testament. is Jewish shorthand for

  383. referring to the whole of the

  384. scriptures, the Old Testament

  385. scriptures. Everything written in the

  386. Old Testament about him had to be

  387. fulfilled. Jesus's mission wasn't an

  388. afterthought. It wasn't a plan B. It was

  389. carefully predicted and woven through

  390. the entire revelation of the Old

  391. Testament.

  392. Now notice in verse 45, then he opened

  393. their minds to understand the

  394. scriptures.

  395. You see, despite having been with Jesus

  396. for these three years, having been

  397. taught by the best teacher, and having

  398. seen all these things that they saw, in

  399. some way, they still needed their minds

  400. opening to understand the scriptures.

  401. It's similar to what Jesus had to do to

  402. the two disciples on the way to Emmas.

  403. They needed their spiritual eyes

  404. opening. They they hadn't got it. The

  405. penny hadn't dropped.

  406. And you know, it's possible to read the

  407. Bible as a merely academic text. It's

  408. possible to read it as just one of many

  409. religious uh manuscripts.

  410. You can be fully versed in the words and

  411. the language, but you can miss the

  412. meaning. We need our eyes opening.

  413. Most of you know that I like science

  414. fictiony things like Star Trek and

  415. Doctor Who and all that sort of stuff.

  416. At sometimes the um the actors have to

  417. say some impressive sounding lines like

  418. um we need to reverse the polarity of

  419. the neutron flow. That sounds really

  420. impressive, doesn't it? Or um there's a

  421. multifphasic temporal convergence in the

  422. space-time continuum. Woo, that sounds

  423. exciting. But what do those words mean?

  424. Not a lot, actually. They just sound

  425. sort of sciency, but they don't actually

  426. have much meaning at all. And without

  427. God opening our minds, the words of the

  428. Bible are just words and their meaning

  429. can be lost on us. So Jesus has to open

  430. our minds. He has to open their minds.

  431. And and when when we read scripture, we

  432. are to come uh to scripture with

  433. humility and with prayer. So when we

  434. come to scripture, we say, "Lord, open

  435. my mind to what you are saying. Help me

  436. to understand. help me to take it in.

  437. Because the gospel and what God says in

  438. his word is not grasped by merely

  439. intellectual application.

  440. It needs to be grasped through spiritual

  441. discernment. So 1 Corinthians chapter

  442. 2:14,

  443. the person without the spirit does not

  444. accept the things that come from the

  445. spirit of God, but considers them

  446. foolishness and cannot understand them

  447. because they are discerned only through

  448. the spirit. Do you see that? Cannot

  449. understand them because they are

  450. discerned only through the spirit. And

  451. this should inform our witnessing. It's

  452. great to be at the the men's uh games

  453. evening and to see some visitors amongst

  454. us, but as we think about like the

  455. future events, who we're going to invite

  456. and everything, what what would we

  457. really need to be doing? Praying that

  458. the Lord would open people's minds to

  459. his revelation, to his word, that the

  460. spirit would give them understanding.

  461. This is why clever people, they can read

  462. the scriptures, but they can't accept it

  463. because it's spiritually discerned. Do

  464. we need God to open our eyes to the

  465. truth?

  466. So, having opened their minds, Jesus

  467. gives them a summary of the Old

  468. Testament teaching concerning himself.

  469. And we're going to observe this under

  470. five um subheadings. I apologize the

  471. PowerPoint's not there. They were going

  472. to be nicely laid out for you, but

  473. you're just going to have to work that a

  474. little bit harder. So, we have five

  475. subheadings we're thinking about this

  476. morning. First is the work. So, you can

  477. write that down if you're taking notes.

  478. Number one is the work. How was our

  479. salvation achieved? Uh halfway through

  480. verse 46, Jesus says that the Christ

  481. should suffer and on the third day rise

  482. from the dead. That is the basis. That

  483. is the heart of the gospel that Jesus

  484. died on the cross and he he took our

  485. sins on himself. He paid the price fully

  486. for our sin. And since death is the

  487. wages of sin, so sin's there, it

  488. deserves death. Since death is the wages

  489. of sin

  490. and since that was totally paid by

  491. Jesus, it would be unjust for Jesus to

  492. stay dead because he paid the price

  493. fully. So he didn't need to stay dead.

  494. So on the third day, he was raised to

  495. life. That was an action that vindicated

  496. Jesus. It was his justification. It was

  497. God saying, "Jesus has paid it all. He

  498. before me, he is right. He stands right

  499. before me. The sin has been dealt with.

  500. And so it goes now that all those who

  501. are now in Christ, Christ has been

  502. justified. He's been vi vindicated. All

  503. those who are now in Christ, his right

  504. standing before God becomes our right

  505. standing before God. So that's why you

  506. get this verse in Romans chapter 4:2. It

  507. says, "He was delivered over to death

  508. for our sins and he was raised to life

  509. for our justification.

  510. He was declared to be right before God.

  511. And because we're in him, we are

  512. declared to be right before God. In

  513. other words, God says of his son, he is

  514. right before me. And therefore, anyone

  515. found in Christ, they are right before

  516. me, too.

  517. So, how do we know? How do we know that

  518. we're right before God? Because Jesus

  519. was raised to life for our

  520. justification. And the scriptures

  521. pointed to this. So Psalm 22, I'm not

  522. going to read that, but you can look at

  523. that. It's full of u pointers towards

  524. Jesus suffering. Isaiah 53 of course as

  525. well, they speak about his death and

  526. suffering. And the Old Testament

  527. predicts the Jesus's resurrection as

  528. well. So Psalm 16:10, for you will not

    Psalms 16:10

  529. abandon my soul to sh or let your holy

  530. one see corruption. And of course in

  531. Isaiah chapter 53, it shows how the

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  532. suffering servant is going to be

  533. punished. He's going to die. And yet it

  534. speaks about how he he's off he will

  535. have offspring and enjoy prolonged days.

  536. So even there there's a hint that that

  537. will not be the end of the Messiah. And

  538. there's many pictures and types in the

  539. Old Testament that point to uh the

  540. Jesus's death and resurrection to his

  541. work that saves us. So that's subpoint

  542. number one, the work that's what Jesus

  543. brings out uh the teaching of the old

  544. Old Testament there. Point number two,

  545. following the work of Christ is the call

  546. of Christ. That's subhead number two,

  547. the call of Christ. So that we we find

  548. that in in verse 47. Jesus says, "And

  549. that repentance for the forgiveness of

  550. sins should be proclaimed in his name."

  551. They were to proclaim the need for

  552. repentance.

  553. Repentance is sincere confession and

  554. turning away from our sin.

  555. Jesus accepts us as we are in all our

  556. sin, in all our mess, in all the the the

  557. the stuff that we do, but he doesn't

  558. leave us there. He calls us from it. He

  559. says, "Turn away from that and turn

  560. towards me and follow me instead." And

  561. and the Old Testament is full. is

  562. replete of calls for repentance. So

  563. Isaiah 55:7

    Isaiah 55:7

  564. says this, "Let the wicked forsake his

  565. way and the unrighteous man his

  566. thoughts. Let him return to the Lord

  567. that he may have compassion on him and

  568. to our God, for he will abundantly

  569. pardon."

  570. So you see in that one verse, you've got

  571. the two ideas there. Jesus is speaking

  572. straight out of the Old Testament there.

  573. Repentance has always been the call of

  574. God to sinful people.

  575. That is part of the call of Christ to

  576. us. We need to turn our back on our sin

  577. and turn towards the Savior. We need to

  578. repent. And as I said that that verse

  579. also speaks about the promise of

  580. forgiveness too. He will abundantly

  581. pardon. He will abundantly

  582. pardon. That is the call of Christ.

  583. Repent and you will be abundantly

  584. pardoned, forgiven.

  585. Third subtitle is the audience. So who

  586. is this for?

  587. Jesus says to all nations

  588. beginning at Jerusalem. For Jerusalem.

  589. And again, we find this in the Old

  590. Testament. This was always God's plan.

  591. Salvation. It came from the Jews, but it

  592. wasn't just for the Jews.

  593. is what God promised to Abraham. Genesis

    Genesis 22:18

  594. 22:18, "And in your offspring shall all

  595. the nations of the earth be blessed."

  596. Isaiah 45:22, "Turn to me and be saved,

    Isaiah 45:22

  597. all the ends of the earth." Do you see

  598. how wide the plan for salvation is? All

  599. the ends of the earth. He carries on for

  600. I am God and there is no other. There's

  601. plenty other references throughout the

  602. Old Testament, too, but you get the

  603. point. Jesus isn't just making this up

  604. on the spot. This has always been the

  605. plan of God. This is the heart of God

  606. that Malachi chapter 1 vers 11 that his

    Malachi 1 chapter mention

  607. name will be great among the nations.

  608. Who are the nations?

  609. All peoples anywhere, everywhere,

  610. whether they are in Jerusalem, India or

  611. England, we all need to hear the call to

  612. repentance and the promise of

  613. forgiveness.

  614. And that brings us to our fourth

  615. subpoint, the witnesses.

  616. Verse 48, you are witnesses of these

  617. things. Now, of course, that was first

  618. and foremost spoken to the apostles

  619. right then and right there. But did

  620. Jesus expect those 11 uh men to be able

  621. to witness to all the nations by

  622. themselves?

  623. Seems a bit of a bit of an ask really,

  624. right? 11 men go and evangelize the

  625. entire world. Now the point is as they

  626. proclaim the call of Christ and others

  627. believe they join as witnesses to the

  628. truth. I mean, yeah, the apostles were

  629. the eyewitnesses

  630. and they had a special and unique

  631. ministry. But what we see in Acts is as

  632. the believers, as the church grows and

  633. spreads out, they all obey the court of

  634. Christ to witness to the truth, witness

  635. to Christ.

  636. Not all of them were preachers, not all

  637. of them were miracle workers, but they

  638. could all talk to people around them

  639. about Christ. And if you think about it,

  640. there is a thread between every single

  641. believer here and that early church that

  642. early early disciples. There was a

  643. thread between you and them in some way.

  644. So um that th those apostles and early

  645. disciples,

  646. they spoke to others, they told others,

  647. they told others. And throughout

  648. history, that has trickled down

  649. throughout the centuries. uh believers

  650. who have faithfully and bravely and

  651. sometimes at great costs shared the

  652. gospel and that ends up where we are

  653. today at North Bradley Baptist Church.

  654. Now we have this call to witness for

  655. Christ.

  656. That call is upon you and me to continue

  657. to reach out to all nations.

  658. And those nations might be found in your

  659. own home.

  660. They they might be in your classroom or

  661. your office or your gym. Or it might be

  662. that God is calling some here to go

  663. somewhere else to take the gospel.

  664. We live in a very multicultural

  665. um world now, don't we? So we can reach

  666. the the the world kind of from our own

  667. area. But actually uh maybe there are

  668. some that need to go somewhere else.

  669. Whoever you are, whatever your gifts,

  670. you have a part to play. You have

  671. something to do in this to witness to

  672. the truth of Christ.

  673. But it's scary, isn't it? And they were

  674. scared, too. We get scared.

  675. But we're not alone in this. And this is

  676. our final subpoint here. They're not

  677. alone because Jesus promised them the

  678. power, the power to fulfill the command

  679. he's just given them. Verse 49.

  680. And behold, I am sending the promise of

  681. my father upon you, but stay in the city

  682. until you are clothed with power from on

  683. high. It's a it's an interesting phrase,

  684. clothed with power from on high.

  685. And this was fulfilled on the 50th day

  686. after Christ's resurrection. The Holy

  687. Spirit fell upon the apostles and

  688. transformed them from men who were

  689. hiding and waiting to men who were

  690. empowered and on a mission. And the Holy

  691. Spirit is given to all who respond to

  692. the call of Christ. At Pentecost, when

  693. the Holy Spirit had come upon the

  694. apostles, Peter stood up and he preached

  695. a sermon. And the people were cut to the

  696. heart and they said, "What must we do?"

  697. And listen to to what Peter says. It's

  698. very close to these exact words that

  699. we've just been studying about Jesus

  700. that the commission of Jesus. So if

  701. you've got a Bible, have a flick over to

  702. Acts chapter 2. I love to hear the

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  703. rustle of pages or the tap of buttons as

  704. you change your reference there. Acts

    Acts 2:38

  705. chapter 2, verse 38.

  706. And Peter said to them, "Repent." There

  707. we are. Repent and be baptized every one

  708. of you in the name of Jesus Christ for

  709. the forgiveness of your sins and you

  710. will receive the gift of the Holy

  711. Spirit. So there he calls for repentance

  712. and baptism that pictures that spiritual

  713. union that happens with Christ. So he

  714. says in his name. So we everything he's

  715. done it within what he's done for us is

  716. in his name and then you are forgiven.

  717. Forgiveness is given and the the gift of

  718. the Holy Spirit is given too. This is

  719. the spiritual reality for all who hear

  720. and respond to the call of Christ. We

  721. are forgiven and we are given the Holy

  722. Spirit. But we might think well is is

  723. that just for those back then at that

  724. point who were hearing just just right

  725. then. But but look at the next verse.

  726. Verse 39. In Acts 2:39, Peter continues,

    Acts 2:39

  727. "For the promise is for you and for your

  728. children and for all who are far off,

  729. everyone whom the Lord calls the the

  730. Lord God calls to himself."

  731. So this is for us.

  732. But even then, this giving of the Holy

  733. Spirit is not something Jesus just

  734. invented or thought about on the the

  735. spur of the moment. As Peter himself

  736. points out in that Pentecost sermon, he

  737. quotes from Joel's prophecy and it's

  738. there in Acts chapter 2:1 17 and in the

  739. last days it shall be God declares that

  740. I will pour out my spirit on all flesh.

  741. In the Old Testament, we see that

  742. certain people were clothed with the

  743. spirit or given the spirit for for

  744. certain times and instances, but it

  745. looks forward to that that other the New

  746. Testament time when God pours out um his

  747. spirit on all who are in Christ. And

  748. that is our reality even today. So Jesus

  749. taught the apostles how the scriptures

  750. point to him. He's looking back saying,

  751. "Look, that had to happen. That's

  752. fulfilled in me. And then this is the

  753. application for the future." He was the

  754. promised messiah who came to save to

  755. deliver. That's the work of salvation.

  756. Remember the work of salvation. And then

  757. that that issues and the call of Christ

  758. to repentance and forgiveness. Who is

  759. this for? The audiences to all people,

  760. all nations starting at in in Jerusalem,

  761. then to all nations. Who's going to tell

  762. him about it? Who's the witnesses? First

  763. of all, the apostles. But then that

  764. carries through to every believer,

  765. everyone that's saved. And then we don't

  766. rely on our own self on our own power or

  767. our own clever words but on the

  768. eyeopening lifechanging power of the

  769. Holy Spirit. And all of that was

  770. promised in the Old Testament.

  771. So there's the the the the um proof the

  772. scriptural proof of the mission of

  773. Jesus.

  774. As we begin to draw to a close

  775. at this point, it's worth noting Luke in

  776. these last bits is uh presenting a

  777. highly abridged

  778. account of what went on. Luke himself

  779. writes in his second volume. So in Acts

  780. uh in Acts chapter 1:3 he says Jesus

  781. presented himself alive to them after

  782. his suffering by many proofs. We've

  783. thought about some of them appearing to

  784. them during 40 days and speaking about

  785. the kingdom of God. Now, if we were to

  786. read our passage in isolation, we might

  787. conclude that Jesus turned up on that

  788. night, said those things, and then led

  789. them out and ascended all on that same

  790. day. But actually when you see the

  791. greater or what what um Luke himself

  792. writes in Acts, we see that what he has

  793. been condensing in this Luke part is

  794. actually spread out over 40 days. Jesus

  795. appeared to them um over 40 days. And so

  796. it seems fair to understand the end of

  797. Luke is highly truncated summary of

  798. events. Jesus appeared, he proved

  799. himself, he taught them and then he

  800. ascended. But those things, these events

  801. we're reading, they took place over 40

  802. days.

  803. So verse 50

  804. takes place at the end of those 40 days.

  805. Jesus leads them out to the Mount of

  806. Olives that's near Bethany. He blesses

  807. them and as he blesses them, he's taken

  808. up from them. And in his resurrected

  809. state, we we would if we we looked at

  810. all the the different gospels, we'd see

  811. that Jesus seems to appear and disappear

  812. at will. He just drops in as he wants to

  813. and does his bit and then he goes. And

  814. so the disciples were never really sure

  815. when Jesus was going to appear next. But

  816. at at his ascension,

  817. that is more final. He's taken from them

  818. in a way that they can see him going. It

  819. doesn't just disappear. They can see

  820. him. They watch him going. That this is

  821. final. His final blessing. And his

  822. stunning ascension is so that they knew

  823. that was it. He has now returned to the

  824. father for good. They shouldn't be

  825. waiting around expecting him to pop up

  826. again. No, now he has returned and this

  827. is the beginning, the start of your

  828. mission. What he told you about?

  829. He will return. But when he does, that

  830. will be to begin the final phase of this

  831. age. So where is Jesus right now?

  832. He's been welcomed into heaven as the

  833. triumphant victor. His mission that was

  834. planned from eternity that was sown

  835. throughout the scriptural witness that

  836. is accomplished. He's now restored to

  837. his rightful place at the right hand of

  838. the father where he sits and that part

  839. of his work has now been done and now he

  840. reigns and he is worshiped and he is

  841. adored. And interesting that

  842. interestingly that is the response of

  843. the apostles. Verse 52 did you notice

  844. they worship him.

  845. That is a staggering statement. Maybe

  846. not for us, but but back then that was a

  847. staggering thing. They worshiped

  848. Jesus.

  849. That's huge.

  850. Luke wrote um his gospel to Theophilus

  851. 1:4 that you may have certainty

  852. concerning the things that you have been

  853. taught. And throughout his gospel, Luke

  854. has been confronting us with the

  855. question, who is this Jesus? And we see

  856. it's taken some time for the apostles to

  857. actually get to it. But it seems they

  858. they've got it now. Jesus is the savior.

  859. It was prophesied about the one who had

  860. to suffer. Jesus is the Messiah. He is

  861. both the son of man and he is the son of

  862. God. Jesus is Emmanuel. He is God with

  863. us. For Jews to worship anyone else but

  864. God would be idolatry. It's punishable

  865. by death.

  866. But now they understand, they've got it.

  867. They understand who Jesus is. And so

  868. they worship him.

  869. They are filled with joy. They

  870. continually meet to worship.

  871. To worship Christ was the practice of

  872. the apostles.

  873. It was the practice of the early church.

  874. It's the practice of heaven, too.

  875. Revelation 5:13-14

    Revelation 5:13–14

  876. John writes, "And I heard every creature

  877. in heaven and on earth and under the

  878. earth and in the sea and all that is in

  879. them saying to him who sits on the

  880. throne and to the lamb

  881. be blessing and honor and glory and

  882. might forever and ever." And the four

  883. living creatures said, "Amen." And the

  884. elders fell down and worshiped.

  885. When we understand who Jesus is and what

  886. he's done, the only right response is to

  887. fall down and to worship.

  888. We don't follow a dead savior or a

  889. ghost. We worship the risen Lord.

  890. Well, let's just be quiet for a moment

  891. and then when they're ready, the band

  892. will lead us in a time of response, in a

  893. time of worship.
