  1. Well, please do open up your Bibles

  2. again to Isaiah chapter 12.

    Isaiah 12 chapter mention

  3. Let's let's continue in prayer.

  4. Father God, again, we come before your

  5. throne of grace, your throne of mercy.

  6. Lord, as we look into your word, we pray

  7. that you would open our eyes to see,

  8. open our ears to hear. We pray Lord that

  9. you would stir our hearts. That you

  10. would move us and change us Lord. That

  11. perhaps uh we hear your word in a way

  12. that we've never heard before this

  13. morning. We pray that your Holy Spirit

  14. will be at work. Lord, may we come to

  15. treasure,

  16. Lord Jesus, greater because of what we

  17. see in your word today. Lord, would you

  18. put a new um new wind in our on our

  19. praise? Lord, would you uh put new

  20. urgency in our proclamation of the

  21. gospel? Father, we pray that you would

  22. truly be at work amongst us today. We

  23. ask in Jesus name. Amen.

  24. Well, um,

  25. as we thought about last week, um, the

  26. first 11 chapters of Isaiah speak of

  27. Israel's rebellion against God. And

  28. Israel at that point were in a bit of a

  29. state. So, morally, Israel were

  30. characterized by injustice and

  31. wickedness.

  32. Spiritually they were people who were

  33. full of hypocrisy and pride and

  34. adultery. Politically they were facing

  35. threats from from neighboring kingdoms.

  36. Um as a consequence of their sin and

  37. their unbelief, Assyria would soon

  38. invade and Israel would face judgment.

  39. But in those early chapters as well,

  40. there is hope. So in chapter 11 it

  41. speaks about this chute that would come

  42. from the stump of Jesse. There would be

  43. a new king uh and he would be one who

  44. walks in the ways of the Lord. One who

  45. would be righteous to the very core of

  46. who he was and he would bring

  47. restoration to Israel and not only to

  48. her but also he would be a hope for the

  49. nations. A banner to which the nations

  50. would come. It's a prophecy that points

  51. to the Messiah to Jesus and all that he

  52. would achieve. And our passage chapter

  53. 12 flows from that hope and speaks of

  54. how God's people will be in that day of

  55. salvation when the Messiah has come. As

  56. we noted last week, chapter 12 is

  57. divided into two songs that start the

  58. same. They have the same line. So verse

  59. one, you will say in that day, and we

  60. looked at what followed, and then we're

  61. looking at the second one, verse four,

  62. and you will say in that day.

  63. And both of those songs they pivot

  64. around verse three uh that says with joy

  65. you will draw water from the wells of

  66. salvation. And this we noted is the key

  67. to thriving to flourishing to being

  68. refreshed as a Christian.

  69. But as we'll see today, it's also the

  70. source of our praise and it's also a

  71. push in us towards proclamation. Over

  72. recent years, the importance of uh good

  73. hydration has become uh much more

  74. popularized than it ever was. It seems

  75. to be, you know, one of the big things

  76. you must drink whatever amount it is.

  77. And of course, with that popularization

  78. of that idea has come great business

  79. opportunities for people. So, uh you can

  80. buy reusable water bottles in all sorts

  81. of shapes and sizes. And I found this

  82. one online which is £1,260.

  83. So if you've got one of them, wow, there

  84. you go. It's not even silver. It's just

  85. stainless steel. Really? I know your

  86. mouth is like what? But I'm sure the

  87. water tastes very good from that bottle.

  88. Um, but you can get all sorts of

  89. different bottles. They come in

  90. different shapes and sizes. Some even

  91. give you a guide down the down the side

  92. of them to say how much you should drink

  93. and and that sort of thing. Um and

  94. actually staying hydrated is important.

  95. If you don't have enough water, it can

  96. affect every part of your body, even

  97. your concentration.

  98. And so, uh it can cause all sorts of

  99. things if you don't, um drink enough

  100. water. So, it's important to keep

  101. properly hydrated.

  102. But it's even more important to keep

  103. spiritually hydrated to verse three, to

  104. keep drawing water from the wells of

  105. salvation. Uh, and last week we looked

  106. at what the wells of salvation are. And

  107. and we said that they are they are God

  108. himself and all that he has done for us

  109. and given to us in Christ, our salvation

  110. and all its breadth and depth. All that

  111. God has done for us in Christ. And we

  112. are to draw upon that. And the wells of

  113. God, they flow with grace. They flow

  114. with spirit, his spirit, and with truth.

  115. They are the source of life to every

  116. believer. If we stop drinking of God, if

  117. we stop bathing in his grace, if we stop

  118. walking with the spirit, if we stop

  119. saturating ourselves in his word, if we

  120. if we stop gathering with his people, we

  121. will soon get into trouble and we will

  122. spiritually run dry.

  123. But if we daily seek the Lord, if we

  124. bring ourselves daily to the source of

  125. our salvation, if we are careful to

  126. orientate ourselves towards the Lord and

  127. constantly draw upon him, we will find

  128. ourselves refreshed even in times of

  129. difficulty and trouble.

  130. Psalm 1 speaks about a similar idea.

  131. Psalm 1 uh blessed is the one who does

  132. not walk in step with the wicked or

  133. stand in the way of that that sinners

  134. take or sit in the company of mockers

  135. but whose delight is in the law of the

  136. Lord and who meditates on his law day

  137. and night. That person is like a tree

  138. planted by streams of water which yields

  139. its fruit in season and whose life does

  140. not leaf does not wither. whatever they

  141. do prospers. And that song is it's got a

  142. very similar idea, isn't it? It's about

  143. drawing water from that source, from the

  144. stream or the well.

  145. And that gives strength and grace is

  146. able to produce its fruit even uh in

  147. seasons of difficulty. What could that

  148. that fruit be that it can produce in

  149. those times of of difficulty and heat?

  150. Well, no doubt the fruit is manifold.

  151. many different things, but we're going

  152. to be focusing in on today on the the

  153. fruit we find in our passage in Isaiah.

  154. They are the fruit of praise and

  155. proclamation. And they are our two

  156. points this morning. Praise and pro

  157. proclamation. So firstly, praise.

  158. If you get a an art lover to speak about

  159. their favorite artist

  160. or you get a a runner to speak about

  161. their next big run or you get a teenager

  162. talking about their favorite band or

  163. Aaron talking about Lord of the Rings,

  164. they will often have a lot to say.

  165. That's where he is actually. He's got

  166. some um Lord of the Ring thing for his

  167. birthday. I think it's his 30th birthday

  168. on Monday, so it's a big one. Anyway, so

  169. he will be very enthusiastic about Lord

  170. of the Rings if you get him talking

  171. about that. And no doubt if you talk to

  172. people about the things that they're

  173. passionate about, they will talk about

  174. some of the things that they they find

  175. exciting. The joys, you know, I love the

  176. way the artist has captured the light. I

  177. like the the bold political statements

  178. in the art. I like the thrill of running

  179. with friends through a countryside. I I

  180. just love their music and the sound and

  181. the beat and the voice and whatever it

  182. is. We instinctively praise what we

  183. love, don't we? What we value.

  184. Now if we are aware of the wrath from

  185. which we have been saved,

  186. if we are aware of the eternal life to

  187. which we have been saved into,

  188. if we treasure Christ,

  189. if we make it our business to regularly

  190. draw close to him in a meaningful way,

  191. then praise will never be that far away

  192. from us. It will always be just there

  193. under the surface. And probably not just

  194. under the surface.

  195. We all know if we drink too much water,

  196. I'm not not meaning to be um crude here,

  197. but eventually it has to go on its way,

  198. doesn't it? It has to pass through us as

  199. it were. And we we drink water and it

  200. goes into us and it does its work. It's

  201. the body uses it for all different sorts

  202. of things. uh it even becomes part of us

  203. uh and then eventually it is sweated out

  204. or it goes you know through the normal

  205. channels

  206. and uh when we are full of the Lord his

  207. presence his word his grace his

  208. influence they they will work through us

  209. through every part of us

  210. it will do its work in us it will become

  211. part of us but it also comes out of us

  212. too

  213. CS Lewis noted this in his book,

  214. Reflections on the Psalm.

  215. I'm going to give quite a long quote

  216. because I can't say it any better than

  217. Lewis did. So, um, just try and focus in

  218. as I I quote from Lewis. He writes, "I

  219. think we delight to praise what we enjoy

  220. because the praise not merely expresses

  221. but completes the enjoyment. It is its

  222. appointed consummation."

  223. He continues,

  224. "But the most obvious fact about praise,

  225. whether of God or anything, strangely

  226. escaped me. I thought of it in terms of

  227. compliment, approval, or the giving of

  228. honor. I had never noticed that all

  229. enjoyment spontaneously overflows into

  230. praise unless shyness or the fear of

  231. boring others is deliberate deliberately

  232. brought into check it."

  233. He says, "The world rings with praise.

  234. Lovers praising their mistresses. We

  235. might not quite put it like that today.

  236. Um, let's say men praising their their

  237. wives or whatever. Readers their

  238. favorite poet. Walkers praising their

  239. countryside players players praising

  240. their favorite game. Praise of weather,

  241. wines, dishes, actors, motors, horses,

  242. colleges, countries, historical

  243. personages, children, flowers,

  244. mountains, rare stamps, rare beatles,

  245. even sometimes politicians or scholars.

  246. Except where intolerably adverse

  247. circumstances interfere,

  248. praise almost seems to be inner health

  249. made audible. We're nearly there. Just a

  250. little bit more. He continues, "I had

  251. not noticed either that just as men

  252. spontaneously praise whatever they

  253. value, so they spontaneously urge us to

  254. join them in praising it." Isn't she

  255. lovely? Wasn't it glorious? Don't you

  256. think it magnificent? The psalmists are

  257. telling everyone to praise God. Uh they

  258. are doing what all men do when they

  259. speak about what they care of. End

  260. quote. They're just doing what comes

  261. naturally. If you love something, if you

  262. treasure it, if you value it, you praise

  263. it and you invite others to come and

  264. join you. And if we've been filling

  265. ourselves up at the wells of salvation,

  266. if we treasure the Lord ourselves,

  267. there will be a desire to express our

  268. delight in God and his salvation as

  269. praise. This is what Isaiah foresees in

  270. verse four. and you will say in that day

  271. give thanks to the Lord. The NIV uh

  272. translates that as give praise to the

  273. Lord. And this isn't a burdensome task

  274. like oh dear I suppose we better praise

  275. the Lord now. That's just not the spirit

  276. of this is it at all. This isn't seen as

  277. a burden at all.

  278. If you give me a really nice curry

  279. and I eat it, I I don't I don't sit

  280. there and think, "Oh, now I've got to

  281. say some nice things about this curry."

  282. If it's a nice curry, it will just I

  283. will just say it. I'll say, "That was

  284. really tasty. That was lovely. Thank you

  285. so much. Oh, I love how tender it was,

  286. how tasty it was. It was great. Thank

  287. you." And I'll be looking around to see

  288. if someone else didn't finish theirs.

  289. And I'll be like, "I'll have some of

  290. that." You know, cuz it's lovely. It's

  291. just something that that naturally

  292. comes. Praising God is not a mere duty.

  293. It is the fitting response to God. This

  294. is the response of those who have been

  295. drinking at the bells of salvation. We

  296. go, "Wow,

  297. thank you Jesus.

  298. You are so good. You are so wonderful.

  299. You are so precious to me." When we are

  300. full of God,

  301. it has to come out in some way in one

  302. way or another.

  303. But who who is speaking here and who are

  304. they speaking to?

  305. Verse four.

  306. And you will say that you there is

  307. plural.

  308. So it's it's God's people, the redeemed,

  309. those God who is saved. That that's who

  310. is speaking. Who are they speaking to?

  311. Drop down to verse six.

  312. It's that verse we spoke about earlier.

  313. Shout and sing for joy, oh inhabitants

  314. of Zion, for great in your midst is the

  315. Holy One of Israel. So it is God's

  316. people speaking to God's people.

  317. And and we need this, don't we?

  318. We need God's people to tell us what we

  319. ought to be doing, what we should be

  320. doing because we know what a struggle it

  321. can be. Sometimes we don't always feel

  322. full of the Lord. Sometimes we need

  323. someone to come in and say, "Hey,

  324. praise the Lord. This is what you're

  325. called to do. This is what you are meant

  326. to be doing."

  327. And we can become so distracted, so

  328. taken up with other things. And so, we

  329. need to encourage one another. We remind

  330. each other, "This is what you're meant

  331. to be doing. Give thanks, shout and sing

  332. for joy.

  333. By the way,

  334. did you know it's okay to be joyful

  335. in our praise?

  336. It's okay.

  337. Seems silly to point that out, but it

  338. seems silly. It seems to me that there

  339. are some churches and indeed some

  340. Christians who get a little bit nervous

  341. if there appears to be too much joy or

  342. if emotion is expressed a little bit too

  343. much. And I know you've got to keep

  344. things reverent reverent and and you

  345. know there's a time and a place for

  346. things but you know let's not play this

  347. out. Look at verse six. Shout and sing

  348. for what does it say?

  349. >> What does it say?

  350. Yes, it does, doesn't it? Sing for joy.

  351. Now, just keep those words in your head.

  352. Shout and sing for joy. Imagine someone

  353. took a spiritual polaroid of your

  354. personal praise and worship. Now,

  355. imagine, is that um that that that

  356. statement, shout and sing for joy, is

  357. that an appropriate caption to your

  358. general approach to praise? Would it

  359. fit? shout and sing for for joy, right?

  360. Picture your praise, your your sort of

  361. inner inner being, your posture,

  362. everything about your praise. Does that

  363. does that actually describe that

  364. caption? Here they are shouting and

  365. singing for joy.

  366. I wonder if you've ever known any joy in

  367. your praise or worship. It should be we

  368. should experience a certain amount of

  369. joy no matter how that is expressed.

  370. Obviously there's different seasons.

  371. There's different ways to express

  372. ourselves and it is the heart the heart

  373. attitude that that matters.

  374. But I do think it's an important

  375. question to ask. Have you ever known any

  376. joy any delight in the Lord at all?

  377. If you are amongst the redeemed,

  378. you should know something of the joy of

  379. the Lord and joy about your salvation.

  380. If you've drunk from the wells of

  381. salvation, Isaiah is saying, "This is

  382. how you will be at least some of the

  383. time."

  384. And when we're not, as so often we're

  385. not, we come together and we encourage

  386. each other and we say, "Come on, this is

  387. what we're meant to be doing. Let's

  388. drink from the wells of the salvation.

  389. Let's shout and sing for joy. Let's

  390. praise the Lord. Come on.

  391. What if someone took a spiritual

  392. polaroid of the praise and worship of

  393. this church?

  394. And would that little caption fit?

  395. Here's a people who are shouting and

  396. singing for joy.

  397. I I think I've been quite encouraged

  398. recently by I think how people are

  399. entering into our singing and praising.

  400. Often it does is tied quite a bit to the

  401. songs, isn't it? And whether we know

  402. them, whether we like them and the rest

  403. of it and okay, fair enough. Uh but I

  404. think generally it's been quite

  405. encouraging.

  406. But I I've also noticed quite often we

  407. sing better after the sermon than before

  408. the sermon. And I wonder whether that's

  409. because in the sermon we're like we're

  410. going into the wells of salvation. We're

  411. putting up the truths, aren't we? And

  412. we're enjoying them. We're thinking

  413. about them. We're like, "Yeah." And then

  414. we respond from that in our praise and

  415. worship.

  416. So I I wonder what about if when you're

  417. coming on a Sunday, what about if you

  418. took time to prepare yourself, your

  419. heart? What about if you um thought

  420. about the Lord, came to the Lord before

  421. you came. So, you came ready to worship

  422. because quite often we come to church

  423. and we haven't picked up our Bible for

  424. two two or three days or whatever. We've

  425. been really busy, we're really rushed,

  426. we're really stressed, and we get in and

  427. like uh and you're spiritually you're

  428. like down there, aren't you? And then by

  429. the end of the service, you probably

  430. come up a little bit, but you know what?

  431. What if we come into the service and

  432. prepared our hearts to meet the Lord and

  433. we're there already? That would be good,

  434. wouldn't it? We're all ready. We've

  435. taken the time. I've prepared myself.

  436. I've in some way I prepared myself to

  437. come and meet with the Lord. That's a

  438. good thing to do. Prepare yourself to

  439. meet the Lord.

  440. Now, we we do live in the British

  441. culture and um that's who we are. We

  442. we're quite reserved and awkward. I am.

  443. I'm terribly awkward, you know. And uh

  444. but we're also members of God's kingdom,

  445. aren't we? So, we are citizens of

  446. heaven. That is also who we are. We

  447. might be British or whatever nationality

  448. we are, but we're also citizens of

  449. heaven. And so, what we do is

  450. appropriate to those who verse six, who

  451. have the Holy One of Israel in our

  452. midst. And when you know the Lord is in

  453. your midst, then it seems appropriate

  454. to get a little bit excited sometimes

  455. and to to enjoy the time of drawing

  456. close to to to the Lord. It's a great

  457. privilege to have the Lord in our midst,

  458. isn't it? I'm not sure about the

  459. shouting bit and maybe we'll have to

  460. work out how that works itself out in

  461. our sort of situation. But let's not be

  462. a church that looks down on people who

  463. sing with joy. It is what the redeemed

  464. are meant to do.

  465. But more than that, it's what we're

  466. meant to be exalting each other to do.

  467. Verse six, remember it's it's is God's

  468. people speaking to God's people. Um, so

  469. verse six, shout and sing for joy, oh

  470. inhabitant of Zion, for great in your

  471. midst is the Holy One of Israel. So

  472. we're meant to do this. We meant to

  473. encourage each other to do this.

  474. The last thing I want to point out in

  475. this little section is who we praise.

  476. It's it's good to sing songs about God,

  477. isn't it? We do that. We sing about him.

  478. It's good to sing songs that speak of

  479. what God has done.

  480. And it's good to uh these are legitimate

  481. ways to praise uh in the Bible. The

  482. Bible is is full of people speaking

  483. about God, recanting what he's he's done

  484. and saying, "Yeah, the Lord did this.

  485. The Lord saved me this. He's brought us

  486. out of Egypt." You know, it's full of

  487. speaking about God. But don't miss what

  488. Isaiah says here. Verse four, give

  489. thanks to the Lord. Verse five, sing

  490. praises to the Lord.

  491. Do you know it's possible for an

  492. unbeliever to sing things about God?

  493. Just they're just facts, aren't they?

  494. Like you could sing about anything like

  495. the grass is green, you know, God is

  496. great. It's a fact. You don't have to

  497. particularly believe it to sing it. And

  498. and you can do that. You can sing a fact

  499. about God without it being true worship

  500. or praise. You can sing about his

  501. character and his works and yet do so in

  502. a way that is is not actually engaged in

  503. spirit and the truth. It's not actually

  504. an act of worship. You're just spouting

  505. facts.

  506. I wonder if that is harder to do when we

  507. are singing directly to God. Imagine,

  508. I'm not going to do it, but imagine I um

  509. said, "I'm going to sing you a song, and

  510. I'm going to sing you a song about my

  511. wife." And I stood here and I sung all

  512. the wonderful things about her. And uh I

  513. could tell you all the wonderful things

  514. she does and what she's like, and and I

  515. could do that. And actually, any one of

  516. you could stand up and sing, not about

  517. your wife, but about my wife, and sing

  518. how wonderful she is. And both would be

  519. true. It's a very different thing,

  520. though, isn't it? If I stand her in

  521. front of me, I look her dead in the eyes

  522. and I sing something like Elvis El Elvis

  523. Presley's like, "Take my hand, take my

  524. whole life, too." For I can't help

  525. falling in love with you. If if that is

  526. like me just looking right in her eyes,

  527. it's very different to just singing a

  528. song about her. I'm singing to her. Do

  529. you see? Anyone can sing Psalm 48:1,

    Psalms 48:1

  530. "Great is the Lord and greatly to be

  531. praised." Yes, that's true. That is a

  532. universal truth. Absolutely. They may

  533. not believe it, but they can sing it.

  534. But it's another thing to sincerely sing

  535. with the psalmist. Psalm 18:1, I love

    Psalms 18:1

  536. you, oh Lord, my strength. Do you see?

  537. Direct to God. Psalm 63:3-4.

    Psalms 63:3–4

  538. Because your steadfast love is better

  539. than life, my lips will praise you. So I

  540. will bless you as long as I live, and in

  541. your name I will lift up my hands. Now,

  542. of course, don't hear me wrong. The

  543. Bible is full of praise about God, and

  544. that is right and proper and good and

  545. totally biblical and and and in a sense,

  546. it is still to God. Even when we're

  547. singing about him, it is still to God.

  548. But there can be something particularly

  549. helpful to sing or to speak directly to

  550. God.

  551. Whatever form our words take, whether

  552. about God or to God, it should be a

  553. personal thing sang in his presence. So

  554. by faith, you address your praise to God

  555. as if you are standing right before him

  556. in his throne room and he's there.

  557. That is the privilege of those who come

  558. to God through faith in Jesus by the

  559. Holy Spirit. Our praise goes right to

  560. God.

  561. We come in awe in adoration and we bow

  562. before him and we offer sincere

  563. acceptable praise directly to our God.

  564. Isaiah says give thanks to the Lord. He

  565. says sing praise

  566. to the Lord. That is one of the joys,

  567. one of the fruits of drinking from the

  568. wells of salvation. we can come to our

  569. God and we can sing his praise.

  570. The second uh point we'll consider is

  571. that of proclamation.

  572. And that's our final point,

  573. proclamation.

  574. Now, I don't want to um claim to be a

  575. particularly exceptional dad. I've had

  576. my fair share of good moments and my

  577. fair share of uh less than good moments,

  578. shall we say.

  579. But if someone accused me of being a

  580. negligent father,

  581. I could of course try to defend myself.

  582. But how much better would it be if

  583. others came to my defense, especially my

  584. daughters, and said, "Whoa, wait a

  585. minute. You don't know what you're

  586. talking about. Let me tell you about,

  587. you know, my dad or whatever." You know,

  588. if they speak well of me, if they

  589. proclaim the truth, that speaks very

  590. powerfully, doesn't it? And so it should

  591. be with God's people,

  592. God's children.

  593. Now, that we have a great God. That is

  594. is plain to see. So, creation declares

  595. it. Psalm 19:19 verse1, the heavens

  596. declare the glory of God and the sky

  597. proclaims his handiwork. And do you

  598. remember back when we were going through

  599. Luke, uh, we saw that the triumphal

  600. entry as people were praising God for

  601. Jesus, the Pharisees told Jesus to stop

  602. them. Stop these people. They shouldn't

  603. be saying that. But Jesus answered in

  604. Luke 19:40, "I tell you, if they were

    Luke 19:40

  605. silent, the very stones would cry out.

  606. Should we leave it to the stones to

  607. declare God's praises?

  608. Should we leave it to creation to

  609. declare the truth about God?

  610. Now remember who's speaking. It's the

  611. redeemed speaking to the redeemed. It's

  612. the Lord's people encouraging each

  613. other. The redeemed should speak about

  614. our God. It is the calling of the

  615. redeemed to proclaim our God. Let's just

  616. look at the passage, make sure we're

  617. actually in agreement with that and then

  618. very briefly we'll think about some

  619. applications in a few moments. So in the

  620. ESV in verse four it says give thanks to

  621. the Lord, call upon his name. In the NIV

  622. it's give praise to the Lord. Proclaim

  623. his name. So you've got the idea of call

  624. and proclaim. The ESV's translation

  625. suggests we are to call upon the Lord

  626. which which I think suggests um prayer

  627. and uh worship. Uh so it's just slightly

  628. different. The NIV uh translation says

  629. we are to proclaim which suggests

  630. speaking about God. That's because the

  631. Hebrew here can mean call. It can be

  632. mean proclaim or it can mean to uh read

  633. aloud or to speak aloud about you're

  634. reciting

  635. uh truths about someone.

  636. So that's the idea. That's what you get

  637. the sort of different flavors going on

  638. there. It could be either calling upon

  639. the Lord. That's certainly something we

  640. should do. That might be an idea.

  641. However, I find myself leaning towards

  642. the NIV here. That seems a better fit.

  643. His name represents all he is. How he

  644. has chosen to reveal himself. His

  645. proclamation about himself. So what he

  646. has revealed to us about himself, his

  647. name and everything that that the name

  648. sums up about him, that is what we are

  649. to proclaim to others. And even if we

  650. take the first part of this verse to be

  651. talking about calling upon the name as

  652. in more of a prayerful attitude or more

  653. sort of a worship with him god's people

  654. attitude actually the idea is repeated

  655. albeit with a different word at the end

  656. of verse four. So there it's says even

  657. in the ESV uh proclaim that his name is

  658. exalted. So whatever way we take this

  659. one way or the other this is about

  660. proclamation. This is about the

  661. proclamation of God, his name, and how

  662. he has revealed himself to us.

  663. God is not a myth.

  664. He's not a trivial being.

  665. He's not a despot. He's not just

  666. watching from afar. He's not unloving.

  667. He's not impotent. God, verse six, is

  668. the holy one of Israel. There is no one

  669. other. There's no other like him. No

  670. other being in the same category. He

  671. stands alone. He is holy and unique.

  672. Sometimes as a pastor I have to write

  673. references for people and references

  674. want to know a person's character. What

  675. are they like? Are they reliable? Do

  676. they get on? Can they, you know, work in

  677. a team? Those sorts of things. How how

  678. do they conduct themselves? You want if

  679. you want to know what a person is like,

  680. then you ask those who know them, don't

  681. you? Tell me about them. What what are

  682. they like? And as those who know God, we

  683. are to proclaim him,

  684. to make him known. How did God reveal

  685. himself to Moses? Back in Exodus chapter

  686. 34:6,

  687. it says this,

  688. "The Lord passed before Moses or before

  689. him and proclaimed, "The Lord, the Lord,

  690. a God merciful and gracious, slow to

  691. anger and abounding in steadfast love

  692. and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love

  693. for thousands, forgiving iniquity and

  694. transgression and sin, but who will be

  695. by no means clear the guilty, visiting

  696. the iniquity of the fathers and the

  697. children and the children's children to

  698. the third and fourth generation. That is

  699. who we declare. A God who is rich in

  700. mercy and grace, but a God who does not

  701. wink at sin.

  702. We are to declare our God.

  703. But we are also in verse four to make

  704. known among the nations what he has

  705. done. Verse five, sing praises to the

  706. Lord for he has done glorious things and

  707. let this be made known in all the earth.

  708. So God's people, we are to proclaim God

  709. himself, who he is, the kind of God he

  710. is, but we're also to declare what he

  711. has done. And for us living after

  712. Jesus's death and resurrection, we we we

  713. understand now how many parts of Isaiah

  714. actually including chapter 11 12 and and

  715. chapter 12, they ultimately speak about

  716. Jesus.

  717. So Emanuel, God himself took on flesh

  718. and became the suffering servant to

  719. bring forgiveness and restoration,

  720. salvation to his people. So as we speak

  721. about what God has done, our emphasis

  722. has to be on Christ.

  723. on Christ.

  724. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians chapter

  725. 2:2, "For I decided to know nothing

  726. among you except Jesus Christ and him

  727. crucified."

  728. Or Galatians 6:14, "But far be it from

    Galatians 6:14

  729. me to boast except in the cross of the

  730. Lord Jesus Christ."

  731. Or 1 Corinthians chapter 15:1. Now I

  732. would remind you brothers of the gospel

  733. I preached to you. And then he goes on

  734. to explain what he preached to them that

  735. was of first importance. So Christ's

  736. death, his burial, his resurrection for

  737. the forgiveness of sins and the hearts

  738. of the glorious things that God has done

  739. that is revealed to us in Christ

  740. and what he did. So as new covenant

  741. believers, Christ is to be at the heart

  742. of our message, our gospel, our

  743. proclamation.

  744. But who is this message for? Verse

  745. four says among the peoples. Verse five

  746. in all the earth. In all the earth.

  747. So every single person that you have met

  748. is included in this.

  749. The cleaner,

  750. the person in a care home, the teacher,

  751. the parent, the rude person, the really

  752. nice person. Do they need to hear about

  753. Jesus?

  754. The answer has got to be yes. If they're

  755. on this earth, yes.

  756. I mean, they might not want to hear it.

  757. They might not believe it. But this is

  758. what we are called to do. To take the

  759. glorious gospel out into all the earth.

  760. This all the earth includes your home,

  761. doesn't it? your classroom, your gaming

  762. world, your online presence, your

  763. office, your ward. It includes Iran,

  764. Iraq, Russia, Israel, Nigeria, and so

  765. on. It's is everywhere.

  766. So, how is that going to happen?

  767. How will the gospel get to Iran? How

  768. will it get into China?

  769. Is there

  770. Is there someone who could go?

  771. Is there someone

  772. who wants to go, but they need our

  773. support in order to go?

  774. Are there believers already there, but

  775. they're having a really hard time? And

  776. actually, if we want to see the gospel

  777. go out into that part of the world, what

  778. they need is our prayer and possibly

  779. some money and some encouragement.

  780. We have a mission update prayer meeting

  781. coming up on the 24th of May to think

  782. about the work in Latatti and of Daniel

  783. Cabalero and all the things that they

  784. are doing. That's not just so that we

  785. can tick off the mission box and say

  786. we've done that bit. Good, aren't we? A

  787. nice little church. It's it's part of

  788. this calling, do you see? To to see the

  789. gospel going out into all the world.

  790. Okay. So maybe I can't quite go where

  791. they do, but I can be involved in their

  792. work.

  793. The mission work we support here in the

  794. church is not just for general interest.

  795. It's part of the call of passages like

  796. this. So it does concern you. The

  797. mission work that we support or you

  798. support maybe that concerns you. It's

  799. it's important.

  800. And how will you get the message of

  801. Jesus into your home? For some of you,

  802. that might be really easy. For some of

  803. you, that's going to be really

  804. difficult.

  805. How will the message of Jesus be

  806. proclaimed in your classroom? How will

  807. your friends, how will your colleagues

  808. hear about Jesus?

  809. If only

  810. there was a believer there who could

  811. tell them.

  812. If only there was a believer who could

  813. bring these people before the Lord in

  814. prayer.

  815. If only there was someone who knew the

  816. Lord in that place in their lives, who

  817. could speak about him and speak about

  818. what he's done.

  819. But wait,

  820. there is

  821. you. If you are there,

  822. you have the opportunity to speak about

  823. Jesus, to proclaim, to put this passage

  824. into practice.

  825. As part of our mission um this year,

  826. we've organized many different events.

  827. They're not the be all and end all of of

  828. anything really. They're just there to

  829. help, to give you an opportunity to say

  830. like, "Oh, we got this thing going on at

  831. church. Do you want to come?" No. Okay.

  832. Well, you know, fair enough. But, you

  833. know, it's just an opportunity, isn't

  834. it? Something you can you can bring

  835. before. It's just it's a tool for you to

  836. use. How how are people going to come to

  837. these things? It's not by magic. If if

  838. people are to hear, if they're to come,

  839. it relies on you and me being obedient

  840. to our call and looking for those

  841. opportunities, praying for the

  842. opportunities to proclaim our Lord. I I

  843. wonder if you will do that. Okay, you

  844. might not be at the stage where you're

  845. bold enough to actually invite someone,

  846. but why don't you pray that the Lord

  847. would get you to that stage to invite

  848. somebody? It's scary. We all know that.

  849. But if you don't have a heart for this,

  850. if you're just happy to be a Christian

  851. and that's all, that's where it ends.

  852. I'm a Christian and I'm I'm happy with

  853. that. I'm not going to tell anyone else.

  854. Can I suggest you need to go back to the

  855. wells of salvation?

  856. draw water from the wells of s

  857. salvation. Delight yourselves in the

  858. Lord again. Remember who God is.

  859. Remember what he's done. Draw upon the

  860. promises of God. And then although we'll

  861. still have nerves and be worried about

  862. it, then when we are full of the Lord,

  863. that desire, that need to speak of him,

  864. it should build up in us and we're like,

  865. I'm not content to just sit on it

  866. anymore. There's a truth. There's a

  867. gospel. It saves. I need to speak in

  868. some way. I need to let people know.

  869. We will not be content to leave the job

  870. of proclaiming the Lord just to creation

  871. or to the stones.

  872. We are his people. We are his children.

  873. If anyone should be speaking for him, is

  874. it not us,

  875. the redeemed?

  876. Verse five, sing praises to the Lord,

  877. for he has done gloriously.

  878. Let this be made known in all the earth.

  879. And may the Lord help us in this. Let's

  880. be quiet before the Lord as we just

  881. think on some of those things.
