  1. Well, as I was saying to the children,

  2. the importance of knowing the different

  3. genres of the Bible and reading them

  4. well. If you'd like to be a bit more

  5. equipped for that, I've got a handout

  6. that you're very welcome to come and

  7. grab afterwards that just gives some

  8. some teaching on that. I had planned to

  9. include that in the sermon, but it was

  10. going to be really long. So,

  11. I've decided to take that out. But, if

  12. you want to talk about that more or work

  13. through that more, indeed, if you want

  14. to meet up and read through the Bible

  15. together, if there's passages that you

  16. struggle with, I'm I'm more than happy

  17. to do that and I know Matt is, too.

  18. Please do talk to us about that.

  19. Well, last week we spoke about the

  20. Bible.

  21. We saw that the Bible is God's word.

  22. That means it's authoritative.

  23. When God speaks, he speaks what is true.

  24. It's infallible. God's word is incapable

  25. of containing error and it also contains

  26. everything we need to live a godly life.

  27. It's sufficient.

  28. And speaking about the Bible is is, I

  29. think, fantastic and exciting. And what

  30. an incredible gift we have in the Bible.

  31. But, sometimes the reality of getting

  32. stuck into the Bible can be very hard.

  33. I mean, what am I supposed to do with

  34. the story of a floating ax head?

  35. Or Hebrew love poetry that describes

  36. someone's teeth as being like a flock of

  37. shorn ewes.

  38. Right?

  39. This week we're going to talk not about

  40. the Bible. We're going to talk about

  41. what the Bible is about.

  42. And we're aiming to be better equipped

  43. to open up the Bible and to get

  44. something out of it. That's the the aim

  45. for this morning. This is sermon part

  46. one. This will just be a couple of

  47. minutes. We'll then sing and we'll do

  48. part two. And I've done that because we

  49. need to think about a fundamental truth

  50. that Jesus taught, which is this. In

  51. John chapter 15 and verse five, he says,

    John 15 chapter mention

  52. "Apart from me,

  53. you can do nothing."

  54. Jesus This mean, "On the days you're not

  55. depending on me, you'll basically be

  56. okay and be able to get on with it.

  57. Right? Like husbands, when your wife's

  58. gone away, you can still cope, can't

  59. you? You know how to wash your own

  60. pants. It's not just your wife who does

  61. that for you.

  62. But,

  63. when Jesus says, "Apart from me, you can

  64. do nothing."

  65. He's not saying, "I'm a nice to have."

  66. You know, you kind of get on with your

  67. life and I'm a nice extra to have in

  68. your life. He says, "Apart from me, you

  69. can do nothing." He means nothing. The

  70. whole of the Christian life should be

  71. lived in total dependence upon God. And

  72. that the same thing is true of reading

  73. and seeking to understand the Bible.

  74. We are helpless without God.

  75. We might be able to understand a

  76. proposition

  77. or see the link between a cause and an

  78. effect written in the pages of the

  79. Bible, but true understanding of the

  80. Bible only comes about by a work of the

  81. Spirit.

  82. So, in 1 Corinthians chapter 2, verses 9

    1 Corinthians 2:9–14

  83. to 14, we read this. As it is written,

  84. "What no eye has seen nor ear heard, nor

  85. the heart of man imagined, what God has

  86. prepared for those who love him."

  87. These things God has revealed to us

  88. through the Spirit.

  89. For the Spirit searches everything, even

  90. the depths of God. For who knows a

  91. person's thoughts except the spirit of

  92. that person, which is in him?

  93. So also, no one comprehends,

  94. no one comprehends the thoughts of God

  95. except the Spirit of God.

  96. Now, we have not received the Spirit of

  97. the world,

  98. but the Spirit who is from God, that we

  99. might understand the things freely given

  100. us by God. And we impart this in words

  101. not taught by human wisdom,

  102. but taught by the spirit

  103. interpreting spiritual truths to those

  104. who are spiritual. And here's the real

  105. kicker. First Corinthians chapter 2

    1 Corinthians 2:14

  106. verse 14, the natural person does not

  107. accept the things of God.

  108. For they are folly to him.

  109. And he is not able to understand them

  110. because they are spiritually discerned.

  111. Someone can be a scholar of the biblical

  112. languages, right? Originally written in

  113. Hebrew, a short section in Aramaic, and

  114. the New Testament in Greek. Someone can

  115. be an expert in those languages. They

  116. might be able to explain to you the

  117. technical use of this particular term at

  118. this reason

  119. is is used at this point for this

  120. reason, but they will never truly

  121. understand the Bible because

  122. understanding of the Bible

  123. only comes about by the spirit.

  124. Someone might be able to recite to you

  125. the story of Daniel in the lion's den.

  126. But their understanding of it

  127. it will be lacking.

  128. The spirit must help us to understand

  129. spiritual truth or we will never

  130. understand at all.

  131. And part of the miracle of how God saves

  132. someone is by giving them this

  133. understanding of the truth of the Bible.

  134. So, in coming to the Bible

  135. hopefully day by day, week after week

  136. in seeking for that to be more than just

  137. an exercise in flicking your eyes over

  138. some words, maybe half remembering a

  139. sermon you once heard about it, and then

  140. just plowing on with your day

  141. in order to read the Bible and truly get

  142. something out of it, we need to start

  143. with an attitude of total humility and

  144. dependence.

  145. When I remember to when I come to read

  146. my Bible

  147. I start by expressing this explicitly to

  148. God.

  149. I pray to him, God, I will not

  150. understand your word without the work of

  151. your spirit. Without you, I can do

  152. nothing. Have mercy on me.

  153. I wonder

  154. when you come to read the Bible, is your

  155. attitude more one of humble dependence?

  156. Or is it one of, "Yeah, I've got this."?

  157. And what we would confessionally say is

  158. true of us,

  159. but what's actually true?

  160. When you open your Bible,

  161. what's your attitude?

  162. Where's your heart? So, before we get

  163. stuck into what the Bible is about,

  164. we're going to come to God in humble

  165. dependence and prayer. If I'll invite

  166. the the band up, we're going to ask God

  167. to speak to us through his word in this

  168. wonderful hymn,

  169. uh speak, O Lord, we're going to express

  170. exactly this truth. We're looking to him

  171. to give us understanding, which we will

  172. not otherwise have.

  173. So, uh as the band plays, if you're

  174. able, let's stand, and let's sing,

  175. speak, O Lord.

  176. >> [music]

  272. >> And so, then let's pray. Lord, yes, we

  273. pray. Speak.

  274. We ask open our minds.

  275. We ask give us understanding of those

  276. things which we cannot understand apart

  277. from you.

  278. Lead us into the truth of your glorious

  279. words

  280. and glorify yourself in this.

  281. Amen.

  282. Uh they made some Star Wars films about

  283. 10 years ago now. Anyone see them? Star

  284. Wars 7, 8, and 9? Yeah, some of you did.

  285. Over a period of about 5 years, they had

  286. two different directors and they made

  287. three films.

  288. And they really struggled to tell one

  289. coherent story. It was a complete mess.

  290. I think pretty much everyone agrees

  291. about that. They had some fun things

  292. that happened, you know, they were an

  293. enjoyable watch, but it was supposed to

  294. be three episodes in the saga of Star

  295. Wars that all joined together, and it

  296. was just a total shambles.

  297. They couldn't tell one story

  298. over just 5 years with two directors

  299. working on three films.

  300. You know where I'm going. The Bible was

  301. written over the course of 1,500

  302. years. It had over 40 different authors

  303. and it does manage to tell one great and

  304. glorious story.

  305. Now, I don't know how many millions they

  306. spent on Star Wars. Maybe I should have

  307. looked that up.

  308. But what a miracle the word of God is

  309. that it tells one coherent, glorious

  310. story. This graphic was created by a guy

  311. called Chris Harrison. It's going to

  312. appear on the screen in a moment and it

  313. shows all of the cross-references that

  314. exist between the different chapters of

  315. the Bible. What you can see along the

  316. bottom is each different chapter of the

  317. Bible. The longer the line, the longer

  318. the chapter is.

  319. And these are all the different ways in

  320. which the Bible refers to itself.

  321. There are tens of thousands of them.

  322. It's a glorious picture. And that's very

  323. nice. I quite like that demonstration.

  324. You know, the colors don't actually mean

  325. anything. They just did that to make it

  326. look pretty. But it's very nice, isn't

  327. it? And isn't incredible?

  328. In fact, even people like Jordan

  329. Peterson, who you may have come across,

  330. uh quite a popular speaker, he refers to

  331. this diagram. He says that the Bible is

  332. the first ever hyperlinked document.

  333. Used to hyperlinks, those blue links on

  334. web pages that take you around, right?

  335. The Bible is the first of all of those.

  336. It is one big story.

  337. And knowing that big story will help us

  338. by the power of the Holy Spirit, of

  339. course,

  340. to appreciate and properly understand

  341. the small part of the Bible that you

  342. might be reading on any given day. So,

  343. we're asking this question. What is the

  344. Bible

  345. about?

  346. Now, I can give you very short answers.

  347. And next week, we've got an all age

  348. service in which we're going to see the

  349. fact that the Bible is all about Jesus.

  350. And we're going to see three different

  351. ways in which the Old Testament in

  352. particular leads us into Jesus. And

  353. hopefully not in the obvious ways that

  354. you're already thinking of. It does it

  355. in so many more ways. The Bible is about

  356. Jesus. What else could we say? We could

  357. say Genesis chapters 1 through 11 is the

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  358. story of why the world is the way it is.

  359. Genesis chapter 12, all the way through

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  360. to the end of Revelation, is how God is

  361. going to solve that problem. That's one

  362. way of thinking about the Bible. Maybe

  363. if you've not read those first 11

  364. chapters of the Bible for a while, spend

  365. some time there. Why is the world the

  366. way it is? It's all there.

  367. It's all laid out for us.

  368. Or we might sketch out the four main

  369. movements of the Bible. It begins with

  370. creation. God makes a perfect world

  371. followed by fall. Humanity rebels

  372. against God and is subject to death.

  373. Which is followed by redemption.

  374. The story of how God is going to save us

  375. from our sins.

  376. And then finally, it speaks about the

  377. new heavens and the new earth. When

  378. those who have been saved from their sin

  379. will get to dwell with God forever.

  380. And that last part,

  381. new heavens and new earth, that's still

  382. future tense, of course, isn't it? That

  383. is yet to come. The Bible describes the

  384. events of the end of the world.

  385. And the glory that it's leading to

  386. for those whose faith is in Jesus.

  387. Here's the thing though, on the ground

  388. level of scripture,

  389. right, say you were reading the book of

  390. Ruth.

  391. Well, we could say that's part of the

  392. Bible that's about redemption, right? We

  393. have our creation fall, it's part of the

  394. redemptive storyline. That's helpful.

  395. And you're reading Ruth,

  396. and then Ruth sleeps on some guy's feet,

  397. and then some people swap flip-flops.

  398. Right?

  399. That large picture maybe isn't as

  400. helpful as it could be. So, what we're

  401. going to do is look at another framework

  402. that helps us down on the ground level

  403. of scripture. Now, there are lots of

  404. different ways we could tell the big

  405. story of the Bible. One of my favorite

  406. ones comes from a book by Graeme

  407. Goldsworthy. He's an Australian

  408. theologian who has described the story

  409. of the Bible as being about the kingdom

  410. of God.

  411. And the kingdom of God, he says, and you

  412. can trace this through scripture, I

  413. think is a very, very faithful

  414. framework, is where God's people are in

  415. God's place under God's rule and

  416. blessing. And the toddlers leaders are

  417. very excited cuz they're singing a song

  418. this term which captures that big

  419. picture of the Bible. Right? If you want

  420. to sing it, sing it with them

  421. afterwards. They'll teach it to you.

  422. It's very good. God's people in God's

  423. place under God's rule and blessing. And

  424. I want to suggest to us that this is not

  425. a perfect summary of the Bible. It's not

  426. inspired in the way that scripture is,

  427. but it is very helpful and very

  428. importantly very memorable.

  429. And it can help us get orientated

  430. correctly wherever we are in scripture.

  431. So, let's run it through.

  432. Adam and Eve at the beginning enjoyed

  433. God's kingdom.

  434. In Genesis chapter 2, we read this. The

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  435. Lord God took the man and put him in the

  436. Garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

  437. And the Lord God commanded the man

  438. saying, "You may surely eat of every

  439. tree of the garden.

  440. But of the tree of the knowledge of good

  441. and evil, you shall not eat. For in the

  442. day you eat of it, you shall surely

  443. die."

  444. And a little later in Genesis 2, we read

  445. this. "And the man and his wife were

  446. both naked and were not ashamed."

  447. Here are God's people, the first two

  448. people. They are in the Garden of Eden,

  449. God's place that he had made to them and

  450. given to them to look after. And they're

  451. living under God's rule and blessing.

  452. They're given all these trees. There's

  453. one from which they must not eat.

  454. There's blessing. There's rule.

  455. We also see the blessing in that there's

  456. no shame between them.

  457. The fact that they're naked and not

  458. ashamed is the sort of thing that was

  459. read in Sunday school when I was a kid

  460. that I would giggle at.

  461. But now I realize it's far more profound

  462. than that. There is no shame. There is

  463. nothing in the world that would make

  464. them want to cover up. There is no

  465. sinful desire. There is no

  466. self-consciousness. They are at peace.

  467. They are naked and they are not ashamed.

  468. But they sin.

  469. And we call that before because from

  470. these great soaring heights of enjoying

  471. the kingdom of God, being God's people

  472. in God's place under his rule and

  473. blessing,

  474. because of sin they are driven away from

  475. God's place. Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  476. Therefore, the Lord God sent him out of

  477. the garden of Eden to work the ground

  478. from which he was taken. He drove out

  479. the man.

  480. And those relationships which have been

  481. free of shame

  482. take a dark turn. In the very next

  483. chapter of the Bible after the fall of

  484. humanity is recorded, the first murder

  485. is committed.

  486. God's people are not in God's place

  487. anymore.

  488. They should live under his rule, but

  489. they rebel against it. God in his grace

  490. and mercy blesses them

  491. and they have large families. They start

  492. to populate the earth.

  493. And then God calls Abraham.

  494. At the time of the reading when Josh

  495. read it for us earlier, he was called

  496. Abram. His name is going to get changed

  497. a few chapters later.

  498. And just pay attention as you hear this.

  499. God's people in God's place under God's

  500. rule and blessing. It's all here.

  501. Now the Lord God said to Abram, "Go from

  502. your country and your kindred and your

  503. father's house to the land I will show

  504. you.

  505. And I will make of you a great nation.

  506. And I will bless you and make your name

  507. great so that you will be a blessing. I

  508. will bless those who bless you and him

  509. who dishonors you, I will curse. And in

  510. you all the families of the earth shall

  511. be blessed. God chooses a people, the

  512. descendants of Abraham.

  513. The nation of Israel, that's what the

  514. rest of the Old Testament really covers.

  515. God tells him he will give him a place.

  516. God commands him to leave where he is,

  517. that's the rule of God, and he promises

  518. blessing.

  519. And from Abraham this nation grows. They

  520. wind up in Egypt,

  521. which is not the place that God had

  522. promised to them, and so God rescues

  523. them out of Egypt.

  524. That's the first half of the book of

  525. Exodus.

  526. Then God tells the people how they

  527. should live,

  528. given that they are his people.

  529. That's the second half of Exodus and the

  530. book of Leviticus. But they reject God's

  531. rule, they grumble, they complain, they

  532. say they would have been better off in

  533. Egypt, and so a whole generation misses

  534. out on going into God's place that he

  535. had set aside for them. That's the book

  536. of Numbers.

  537. A new generation rises up.

  538. They will be the ones to enter God's

  539. place, and so the law is repeated to

  540. them.

  541. That's Deuteronomy.

  542. In Joshua, God's people enter God's

  543. place.

  544. They conquer the promised land, and when

  545. they live under God's rule, they are

  546. blessed.

  547. And we see a few times they disobey and

  548. they face judgment.

  549. And then comes Judges, which is a story

  550. that gets darker and darker as it goes

  551. along. Those final chapters of Judges

  552. are truly awful to read.

  553. God's people are in God's place, but

  554. they are not living under his rule.

  555. And there's a line that gets repeated a

  556. few times in Judges, it's this: In those

  557. days there was no king in Israel.

  558. Everyone did what was right in his own

  559. eyes.

  560. And it was clear that what was right in

  561. their own eyes was deep, deep

  562. wickedness.

  563. Which leads into the next chapter of the

  564. life of God's people.

  565. In the book of Ruth, we see how God is

  566. going to provide a king for his people.

  567. And staggeringly, God chooses Ruth, who

  568. is not one of God's people. She is not a

  569. descendant of Abraham.

  570. And she gets brought into God's people.

  571. And eventually, she becomes In fact,

  572. that's the flip-flop swapping, right?

  573. That's her becoming one of God's people,

  574. right? And she becomes the

  575. great-grandmother

  576. of King David.

  577. First and Second Samuel tell the story

  578. of God's people being given a king.

  579. First of all, Saul, but he fails to live

  580. under God's rule. And so, God God

  581. appoints David to be the new king. And

  582. God makes an amazing promise

  583. to David in Second Samuel chapter 7. And

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  584. again, listen out here, God's people in

  585. his place under his rule and blessing.

  586. This is 2 Samuel chapter 7 verse 8.

    2 Samuel 7:8

  587. Now therefore,

  588. thus you shall say to my servant David,

  589. so this is Nathan the prophet speaking

  590. to David, "Thus says the Lord of hosts,

  591. I took you from the pastures,

  592. from following the sheep,

  593. that you should be prince over my people

  594. Israel.

  595. And I have been with you wherever you

  596. went and have cut off all your enemies

  597. from before you. And I will make for you

  598. a great name,

  599. like the names of the great ones of the

  600. earth.

  601. And I will appoint a place for my people

  602. Israel and will plant them, so that they

  603. may dwell in their own place and be

  604. disturbed no more. And violent men shall

  605. afflict them no more as formerly,

  606. from the time that I appointed judges

  607. over my people Israel. And I will give

  608. you rest from your enemies.

  609. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that

  610. the Lord will make you a house.

  611. When your days are fulfilled and you lie

  612. down with your fathers, remember this is

  613. speaking to David, "I will raise up your

  614. offspring after you, who shall come from

  615. your body. And I will will

  616. his kingdom.

  617. He shall build a house for my name, and

  618. I will establish the throne of his

  619. kingdom forever. I will be to him a

  620. father, he shall be to me a son. When he

  621. commits iniquity,

  622. I will discipline him with the rod of

  623. men, with the stripes of the son of men,

  624. but my steadfast love will not depart

  625. from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I

  626. put away from before you. And your house

  627. and your kingdom shall be made sure

  628. forever before me. Your throne shall be

  629. established

  630. forever.

  631. And is this it then, this great and

  632. soaring and wonderful promise that is

  633. made to David?

  634. They're going to be secure, God's people

  635. finally secure in God's place

  636. under his rule. And listen to that

  637. blessing.

  638. Is this it?

  639. Alas, no.

  640. David himself fails to obey the rule of

  641. God.

  642. The books of Psalms, Proverbs, and

  643. Ecclesiastes, and Job speak about what

  644. it is to live in this world. What does

  645. it look like to live under the rule of

  646. God and the blessing of God amidst a

  647. world which is broken by sin?

  648. The story carries on in Kings and

  649. Chronicles. They tell the sad story of a

  650. kingdom that by the end of David's son's

  651. life, Solomon, splits in two.

  652. So, what had been a united people is

  653. split into two parts. What becomes known

  654. as the kingdom of Israel in the north,

  655. whose kings are not from the line of

  656. David, and so are not heirs of that

  657. promise we just heard.

  658. And the kingdom of Judah in the south,

  659. whose kings are descended from David.

  660. They're part of this royal line.

  661. In both kingdoms, they have good kings,

  662. but mostly bad ones, who lead God's

  663. people away from living under God's

  664. rule.

  665. And so, they do not know God's blessing.

  666. God sends prophets: Jonah, Amos, Hosea,

  667. Micah, Isaiah, Nahum, Zephaniah,

  668. Habakkuk, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, who remind

  669. the people of the commands that God has

  670. given to them. That they should live

  671. under his rule, or they will face

  672. terrible consequences.

  673. But the people do not listen.

  674. The kingdom of Israel, that northern

  675. kingdom, is conquered by the Assyrians,

  676. who have been sent by God. They are

  677. taken away from God's place.

  678. And the Assyrians begin a program of

  679. importing people in mass into this

  680. northern kingdom, and basically

  681. eradicating the ethnic identity of this

  682. northern kingdom. That's the reason why

  683. in Jesus' time, the Jews hated the

  684. Samaritans so much. The Samaritans were

  685. the children of those who had been part

  686. of this northern kingdom. And they have

  687. a mixed bloodline. They're not true Jews

  688. anymore. And so there's a great enmity

  689. between them.

  690. The kingdom of Judah in the south sticks

  691. around for a bit longer.

  692. But as we read about in Kings, and it's

  693. also in Chronicles,

  694. the Babylonians come along.

  695. And they're taken out of God's place and

  696. into exile.

  697. And then you get the books of Ezra and

  698. Nehemiah, which actually originally are

  699. just the book of Ezra and Nehemiah. It

  700. was one book originally. We read of how

  701. God's people were restored to God's

  702. place. They travel back to the land.

  703. They rebuild the temple. And God sends

  704. them prophets to encourage them. Haggai,

  705. Zechariah, Malachi, and Joel.

  706. And then there's 400 years of silence.

  707. Lots happens in the period between the

  708. end of the Old Testament and the start

  709. of the new, and we're actually told

  710. pretty much exactly what will happen in

  711. the book of Daniel.

  712. That second part of the book of Daniel.

  713. Everyone likes the first part of the

  714. book of Daniel, exciting stories,

  715. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, right?

  716. Daniel in the lions' den. And then you

  717. get into this really mad stuff. And

  718. there's a goat that's chasing people

  719. around, and then it splits into four,

  720. and all this kind of stuff. What you

  721. have in the book of Daniel, if you spend

  722. time in it, is an incredibly accurate

  723. prophetic history of what would happen

  724. with the kingdoms around God's people.

  725. In the prophecy of Daniel, we find

  726. Alexander the Great. He's there.

  727. He's that goat, by the way. We even read

  728. in Daniel's prophecy of the rise of the

  729. Roman Empire.

  730. So, even the period of time in which God

  731. does not speak to his people, he has

  732. spoken about what will happen to them.

  733. And then we reach the book of Luke. And

  734. I'm going to read a reading that's going

  735. to make you feel all Christmasy. In

  736. those days, a decree went out from

  737. Caesar Augustus that all the world

  738. should be registered. This was the first

  739. registration while Quirinius was

  740. governor of Syria, and all went to be

  741. registered, each to his own town. And

  742. Joseph also went up from Galilee, from

  743. the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the

  744. city of David, which is called

  745. Bethlehem, because he was of the house

  746. and lineage of David, to be registered

  747. with Mary, his betrothed, who was with

  748. child. And while they were there, the

  749. time came for her to give birth, and she

  750. gave birth to her firstborn son, and

  751. wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and

  752. laid him in a manger, because there was

  753. no place for them in the inn. Jesus

  754. comes

  755. under the rule of the Romans, as

  756. predicted in Daniel.

  757. And he alone,

  758. he alone

  759. truly lives under the rule of God.

  760. Never sinning, but living a perfect

  761. life.

  762. He is the long-promised rescuer, the

  763. fulfillment of that wonderful promise to

  764. David. His kingdom will be established

  765. forever.

  766. And you can forgive the disciples for

  767. getting a bit confused.

  768. Because a few times it becomes very

  769. clear that they think that Jesus is

  770. going to be a political leader.

  771. And with our minds taken back to the Old

  772. Testament, we can see why. It seems

  773. obvious to us. We're going, "Well, why

  774. are you thinking that, lads? That's

  775. strange. Jesus is clearly talking about

  776. spiritual things."

  777. You see, the nature of God's kingdom

  778. as foreshadowed in the Old Testament,

  779. God's people in God's place under his

  780. rule and blessing,

  781. actually is much, much broader.

  782. God's people in God's place under God's

  783. rule. Well, hang on, the disciples are

  784. thinking, "We're under the Romans."

  785. Jesus is going to get rid of the Romans,

  786. and then the Jews will stand out among

  787. the nations again.

  788. But, no.

  789. As was said in the Old Testament,

  790. but not properly understood,

  791. all the families of the earth will be

  792. blessed through the descendants of

  793. Abraham,

  794. specifically through one descendant,

  795. Jesus.

  796. And at the end of his ministry, after

  797. his life, his passion, his resurrection,

  798. he gives this Great Commission. "Go

  799. therefore and make disciples of all

  800. nations, baptizing them in the name of

  801. the Father and of the Son and of the

  802. Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe

  803. all that I have commanded you, and

  804. behold, I am with you always to the end

  805. of the age."

  806. All nations. God's people will come from

  807. all nations. It will not be a political

  808. kingdom as it was in the Old Testament.

  809. It will be broader than that.

  810. Far broader. It will be worldwide. And

  811. the Book of Acts speaks about how that

  812. starts.

  813. The letters which we have recorded for

  814. us in the New Testament unfold what it

  815. means to live under God's rule after

  816. Jesus, and just how great God's blessing

  817. is.

  818. God's place is no longer the promised

  819. land.

  820. That's a foreshadowing of the new

  821. heavens and earth,

  822. where it finally all comes together,

  823. but better than Eden.

  824. Revelation 21:3-4,

    Revelation 21:3–4

  825. "Behold, the dwelling place of God is

  826. with man. He will dwell with them, and

  827. they will be his people. God himself

  828. will be with them as their God. He will

  829. wipe away every tear from their eyes,

  830. and death shall be no more, neither

  831. shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor

  832. pain anymore.

  833. For the former things have passed away.

  834. There, in perfection, are God's people,

  835. in God's place, under God's rule,

  836. knowing his blessing.

  837. And I commend that outline to you.

  838. It's not perfect.

  839. It doesn't always totally fit, but it is

  840. very, very helpful.

  841. So, as you read the Bible, considering

  842. that framework, we can find our way.

  843. Because the Bible hasn't been given to

  844. us in a series of short, sharp episodes,

  845. which can be read out of context.

  846. That's not what the Bible is. The Bible

  847. is one story. It must be appreciated as

  848. one story. Like we said last week, it's

  849. not a reference guide.

  850. Turn to this section for anger.

  851. Turn to this section for managing your

  852. finances. No, it's not written like

  853. that.

  854. It's one glorious story. And so, as you

  855. read whatever part of the Bible you're

  856. in,

  857. ask these questions: Who are God's

  858. people? Where is God's place? What does

  859. it look like to give and live under

  860. God's rule?

  861. Are people doing so? And how much

  862. blessing

  863. are they knowing?

  864. If you want to give using that framework

  865. a go, I've got some other handouts as

  866. well of some passages that you might go

  867. to, and using that framework orient

  868. yourself, find your way. They're from

  869. across the whole of scripture, different

  870. styles of literature.

  871. And I hope you will see that you can

  872. find where you are, and by identifying

  873. where the short piece of the Bible

  874. you're reading

  875. fits into the big story that the Bible

  876. is telling,

  877. it helps us to understand it

  878. properly.

  879. You see, when we don't

  880. bear in mind the context of the big

  881. story of the Bible,

  882. uh we can end up with some very weird

  883. application of the Bible.

  884. You might be aware yesterday in London

  885. there was an awful lot of going on.

  886. Christian nationalism is on the rise.

  887. Christian nationalism misses out on the

  888. fact that the kingdom of God is not just

  889. limited to one people anymore,

  890. nor to one geographical place on Earth.

  891. They've ended up with a very strange

  892. interpretation of scripture.

  893. Liberal Christian denominations reject

  894. the rule of God while expecting the

  895. blessing of God.

  896. A sort of comfort blanket for life while

  897. they live it their own way. Well, that's

  898. not being part of God's kingdom.

  899. If we don't bear in mind this big

  900. picture that is told, we end up in weird

  901. places.

  902. Right application of the word of God

  903. bears the whole in mind as it considers

  904. the part it is reading.

  905. Which if you then layer that up with the

  906. fact that there are different genres and

  907. literary styles in the Bible,

  908. well, then one application from today is

  909. surely this, right? Yes, absolutely you

  910. need the help of the spirit to

  911. understand it.

  912. You need to have the whole story of the

  913. Bible in mind as you read the small bit.

  914. You need to know how to read

  915. thousands of years old Hebrew poetry,

  916. which has a whole different set of rules

  917. that it follows compared to modern

  918. poetry. It doesn't rhyme.

  919. There's no iambic pentameter, right?

  920. Those are exciting things you learn

  921. about in your GCSEs, right?

  922. It's very different. You've got to bear

  923. those things in mind.

  924. Depend on the spirit and slow down.

  925. I think one of the wonderful things

  926. about the modern age in which we live is

  927. that we've all got the Bible with us

  928. wherever we go. Remember in your maths

  929. lessons, your teacher said, "You won't

  930. have a calculator with you everywhere

  931. you go."

  932. And now we do.

  933. It's on your phone. It's the same with

  934. your Bible. It's in your pocket. It's

  935. right there. They're fantastic. One of

  936. the downsides,

  937. reading plans can be really helpful.

  938. They keep you accountable to following

  939. through a book.

  940. But the pressure of trying to keep up

  941. with a reading plan means you're not

  942. really reading what you're reading.

  943. You're just trying to get through it.

  944. You're just trying to tick a box.

  945. You've got the whole of the Bible to

  946. bear in mind and to apply it properly.

  947. You need to take time and slow down and

  948. appreciate the Bible for what it is.

  949. Don't use a cocktail stick to eat your

  950. soup.

  951. Use a spoon.

  952. Now, when it's the podcast, that's going

  953. to sound weird cuz the kids' talk's

  954. going to be cut out of it, right? So,

  955. it's going to sound very strange, but

  956. you all know what I mean, right? You

  957. need to read each style appropriate to

  958. it. Read and read again. And you know

  959. what? If you're someone who finds

  960. reading difficult, how blessed we are to

  961. live in an age where on your phone as

  962. well, it can be read to you. And again,

  963. and again, and again.

  964. It's glorious that we have these things.

  965. We must

  966. slow down with our Bible reading.

  967. The temptation is to attempt some great

  968. Bible reading plan, and it is great to

  969. do that and really helpful.

  970. But what are we actually taking in?

  971. I commend to you, too, the Bible is

  972. sufficient. It gives us everything we

  973. need to live a godly life.

  974. But there are really helpful study

  975. guides out there that are like a wise

  976. friend who can sit alongside you and

  977. point things out.

  978. They'll help you to see the difference

  979. between what it looked like to be part

  980. of God's kingdom back then and what it

  981. means to be part of God's kingdom now,

  982. because it's not the same now as then.

  983. If you try and directly apply the

  984. teaching of the Old Testament to

  985. yourself, you're missing the fact that

  986. the Bible is one big story and you end

  987. up in very strange places.

  988. Use Bible study reading guides.

  989. There can be a bit of pride going on and

  990. we're like, "No, I don't use those. I

  991. just have my Bible."

  992. Let's have some humility.

  993. Let's look to those wise friends who can

  994. sit alongside us in a book

  995. or a video

  996. or a podcast

  997. and help us to really appreciate

  998. scripture.

  999. I commend the message of the Bible to

1000. you. The kingdom of God is where God's

1001. people get to live in God's place under

1002. God's rule and its blessing and it's

  1003. fantastic.

1004. We live in the age of the church.

1005. The reason why the New Testament is the

1006. most read part of the Bible is because

1007. it's the easiest part for us to

1008. understand and apply. It's why the

1009. letters of the New Testament, while they

1010. only take up a relatively small chunk of

1011. your Bible, something like that much of

1012. all of that, get so much attention in

  1013. churches and church teaching.

1014. Because they unfold what it is to be the

1015. church. The church is God's kingdom

1016. in the world. Not the building, the

  1017. people. God's people.

1018. So, take the teaching of Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1019. 8.

1020. And we did a little series on this a

  1021. couple of years ago.

1022. If you weren't around then or if you

1023. want a reminder, I just really commend

  1024. it to you.

1025. In Romans chapter 8 verses 15 and 16, we

    Romans 8:15

  1026. read this.

1027. "For you did not receive the spirit of

1028. slavery to fall back into fear,

1029. but you have received the spirit of

1030. adoption as sons, by whom we cry, 'Abba,

  1031. Father.'

1032. For the Spirit himself bears witness

1033. with our spirit that we are children of

  1034. God."

1035. Do you see yourself in the light of

1036. God's kingdom? Are you God's person? Are

1037. you part of God's people?

1038. Do you realize you're a son of God?

  1039. If you're a boy or a girl,

1040. again, go to that sermon series if you

1041. want to hear about that.

1042. You're a son of God. That's who you are.

1043. I'm not only worth something while I'm

1044. as busy as I can be doing this and that.

1045. I don't need to prove myself by the

1046. results that I can achieve. If my faith

1047. is in Jesus, I've been adopted as a son

  1048. of God.

1049. That is who I am.

  1050. I am God's person.

1051. God's place is what we're waiting to

1052. enter. It's not for nothing that in 1

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

1053. Peter chapter 2, Christians are

1054. described as sojourners and exiles,

1055. foreigners and exiles. This is not our

  1056. home.

1057. There should feel a tension.

1058. Some of you know, Sophie and I moved

1059. into our new house this week.

1060. I've been reflecting a lot on the fact

1061. that yes, while we might call it a home

1062. in a sense, it is not home.

1063. Cuz do you know what? The copper

1064. pipework will slowly degrade. The

1065. plaster will crumble from the walls.

  1066. Already is.

1067. The weeds will grow in the garden.

1068. And the bricks will be eaten away by

  1069. ivy.

  1070. It's not a home that lasts.

  1071. God's people,

1072. the sons of God, have a place to which

1073. we look forward, which is eternal.

1074. Are you one of God's people? Are you

1075. looking forward to being in God's place?

1076. Do you live under God's rule?

1077. The men's breakfast yesterday was really

1078. helpful. Right, if God investigated you

1079. for fraud, we had Phil, who's a fraud

  1080. investigator with us speaking.

1081. You can catch him afterwards cuz he's

  1082. here. Hi, Phil.

1083. If God investigated your life,

1084. and what would the outcome of that be?

1085. But of course in the gospel

1086. when God looks at me

1087. he doesn't investigate my life.

1088. He investigates the life of Jesus.

1089. Because it's Jesus' perfect life that is

1090. in my place. Oh, I failed to live under

  1091. the rule of God.

  1092. But Jesus never did.

1093. In Ephesians we read about how there are

1094. good works prepared for us in advance.

1095. We should be seeking to bring our lives

1096. under what what God would have us do.

1097. And do you know the blessing of God?

1098. The blessing of God in the age of the

1099. church is manifold. In our Bible studies

1100. recently, in fact for the last couple of

  1101. years, we've been

1102. chunking our way through, I say

  1103. chunking, maybe

1104. little baby steps through the book of

1105. Philippians or the letter to the

1106. Philippians. And recently we covered

  1107. this passage.

1108. I have learned in whatever situation I

1109. am to be content. I know how to be

1110. brought low. I know how to abound. In

1111. any and every circumstance, I have

1112. learned the secret of facing plenty and

1113. hunger, abundance and need. I can do all

1114. things through him who strengthens me.

1115. Here is the blessing of God. The

1116. blessing of a contentment that does not

1117. come from our circumstances, but from

1118. the Holy Spirit who strengthens us to

1119. face whatever we are to face.

1120. There are liars out there who claim the

1121. name Christian and say that blessing for

1122. Christian comes in wealth and in good

  1123. health.

  1124. Now that's a lie.

  1125. In this life

  1126. we will suffer.

1127. But in whatever we face, whatever the

  1128. circumstance, we have hope.

1129. Of the God who will never leave us nor

1130. forsake us, whatever he might allow to

1131. come our way. The Bible is about God's

  1132. kingdom.

  1133. Do you see yourself

1134. in the kingdom of God.

1135. Are you God's person? Are you

1136. anticipating God's place? Do you seek to

  1137. live under his rule?

1138. And how do you know his blessing?

  1139. Because we are

1140. even when sometimes we feel we are not.

1141. The Bible also tells us what it is to be

  1142. outside of God's kingdom.

1143. To not be one of God's people

1144. means you need to find your identity

  1145. somewhere.

  1146. Who are you?

1147. And people will go into all sorts of

  1148. places.

  1149. Your health and fitness?

  1150. Your family?

  1151. Your work?

  1152. Your sexuality?

1153. To not have the hope of being in God's

  1154. place

1155. means that at death someone who is not

1156. part of God's kingdom will face

  1157. separation from God's love.

  1158. Facing only his judgment.

1159. Because he knows how we have rejected

  1160. his rule.

1161. And rather than coming under blessing

1162. we would face his curse.

1163. The Bible is about God's kingdom.

1164. It's a message that we will not

1165. understand apart from the spirit.

  1166. It's one big story

1167. that we must appreciate as we try and

  1168. take the small parts.

1169. And where do you fit into the kingdom?

  1170. Are you in?

  1171. Or are you out?

1172. Are you God's person in God's place

1173. knowing his rule and blessing?

  1174. Or are you out?

  1175. I don't know. In a moment I'm going to

1176. pray. After the service there'll be some

1177. questions that will appear on the screen

1178. to try and help us to have scriptural

1179. conversations rather than just going

1180. straight to the weather. As interesting

1181. as it's been this week. You can see the

1182. hail the other day. Crazy, right? As

1183. interesting as that is, some questions

1184. on the screen to help us reflect on

  1185. these things. As I say, I've I've

1186. handouts here. Use them or don't use

  1187. them, that's fine, but I

1188. do pray, if you feel convicted about the

1189. need to really get more Bible literate,

1190. these will be helpful for you.

  1191. Let's talk about this. Let's work

1192. through this. The message of this book

  1193. is far too good

  1194. to just skim over.

  1195. So, let's pray.

1196. And then Ali will come up and introduce

  1197. our song.

  1198. Gracious God,

  1199. loving heavenly Father,

1200. I have spoken many words.

1201. Lord, I pray that you would take away

  1202. that which is unhelpful

1203. and keep that which is helpful.

1204. I do thank you for Graeme Goldsworthy

1205. and his study of your scriptures and

1206. that really helpful framework that he's

  1207. drawn out from it.

1208. Thank you that it's not something he

1209. made up and then tried to put on to

1210. scripture. By hard study, he came to it

1211. and it is so true. This is the story of

  1212. scripture.

1213. Lord, I would pray for each one of us

1214. here that we would be clear as to

1215. whether we're in or out of the kingdom.

1216. And Lord, if we're in,

1217. particularly in the fact that we are

  1218. your people,

1219. that is who we are,

1220. Lord, I pray that you would help us to

  1221. root our identity there,

1222. rather than looking everywhere else like

1223. the rest of the world does.

1224. Lord God, remind us who we are

  1225. and remind us

1226. of how you've wonderfully saved us to

  1227. yourself.

1228. In Jesus' name, we pray these things.

  1229. Amen.
