  1. I wonder when you last experienced a wow

  2. moment.

  3. When did you last look at something and

  4. think, "Wow." And And that sense of awe

  5. come off in your in your mind.

  6. Maybe you thought, "Wow." when you

  7. looked at

  8. the skill of of an artist. Maybe you

  9. heard beautiful music or or saw a

  10. painting or a sculpture and thought,

  11. "Wow. What skill went into that? How

  12. Look how that was crafted. Look at the

  13. Look at the detail."

  14. Perhaps you've looked up at the sky and

  15. thought, "Wow. What an amazing sight

  16. that is." Maybe it's a painted sunset

  17. and the sun's reflecting just on the

  18. clouds and you just think, "How

  19. beautiful is that?"

  20. Or maybe this week it was the a power of

  21. a a thunderstorm like we had on on

  22. Monday evening. Um where we where you

  23. looked up and thought, "Wow.

  24. Look at the power. Look at the Look at

  25. the Look at the dramatics." Or or maybe

  26. like our cats you were hiding inside.

  27. But um

  28. maybe like Abraham or Abram as he is

  29. still called in Genesis 15.

  30. You've looked up at the night sky and

  31. you've seen the stars and you've

  32. realized how vast it is and how small

  33. you are. And you thought, "Wow. Isn't

  34. Isn't God great? Isn't this universe

  35. that he's created vast?

  36. How is he mindful of someone like me

  37. who's only only maybe four to six foot

  38. tall? Some of us are taller. Maybe we

  39. should say seven foot.

  40. It It It

  41. tall in a universe that is that's that's

  42. that's light years and light years

  43. across?"

  44. Maybe you've looked up at the stars and

  45. tried to count them.

  46. Um there are about um

  47. from from what from what I've read there

  48. are about 9,100

  49. individual stars that you can view with

  50. a with a with a with a naked eye from

  51. from Earth, uh depending on where you

  52. are, of course. Um

  53. you will see a roughly half of those at

  54. any one time because of you can't see

  55. you can't see the whole night sky.

  56. Um

  57. but this is actually only a small

  58. fraction of the stars that there are.

  59. Um there are there are hundreds of

  60. billions of stars just in our galaxy.

  61. And what you what we can see from Earth

  62. with just our just our eyes without

  63. without the aid of a telescope or

  64. binoculars is actually um

  65. I have to read the zeros here. 0.000002%

  66. of the stars in the Milky Way.

  67. When you look up and you see the stars,

  68. you're only seeing a fraction of of

  69. what's there.

  70. And unlike us when we look up at the

  71. stars, even though that can be a moment

  72. of wow,

  73. Abraham when Abraham looked up at the

  74. stars, it was even greater because when

  75. we look up, we see the stars, but

  76. Abraham was having a conversation with

  77. the Lord. The one who made the stars was

  78. showing his handywork to Abraham as he

  79. spoke.

  80. What an amazing thing that is to think

  81. about. The one who made them was

  82. speaking to the one who's looking at

  83. them.

  84. Well, let's dive into this conversation

  85. between the Lord and Abraham.

  86. Um so, I've got Oh, by the way, this is

  87. a this is a picture. Um this is supposed

  88. to be all the stars that you could see

  89. potentially with an with a naked eye

  90. looking up. I'm not sure whereabouts

  91. this is taken. I think it's northern

  92. hemisphere, but this is um this is a a

  93. picture of the stars.

  94. So,

  95. first the fir- our first point today is

  96. fear not.

  97. This conversation between the Lord and

  98. Abraham happens um

  99. happens after

  100. after a a high point in Abraham's

  101. journey. We've been talking about

  102. Abraham's journey in this series in the

  103. life of Abraham. And we and I think this

  104. has come up in in every sermon that

  105. we've heard so far, um whether it's been

  106. Matt or or Richard and now me speaking

  107. about it. We've been talking about

  108. Abram's journey of faith.

  109. And he's had highs.

  110. He's been He's followed the Lord. He's

  111. left his homeland. He's gone out.

  112. Um he's humbly um allowed Lot to take

  113. the best of the land.

  114. Uh he's

  115. called upon the Lord at various times in

  116. his journey.

  117. But he's also had lows, hasn't he?

  118. Remember he went to He went to He went

  119. down to Egypt. Um he put his wife Sarai

  120. in harm's way to save his own skin.

  121. Well, this conversation happens at what

  122. we would probably say is a high point in

  123. Abram's journey of faith.

  124. We um if you were here last week, we um

  125. we heard about

  126. a high point. Um he Abram won a great

  127. battle, didn't he? He uh he's gone and

  128. he defeated all of these uh all of these

  129. kings. He'd rescued Lot. He'd rescued

  130. all of the prisoners who were taken.

  131. Um and come back victorious.

  132. And not only that, um but he has um

  133. he had he he'd met this man Melchizedek,

  134. the priest of priest of God, and he's uh

  135. and he'd been blessed by Melchizedek,

  136. and he's given he's given uh an offering

  137. uh of of the spoils to to Melchizedek.

  138. Abram seems to be on the up, doesn't he?

  139. He seems to be on a high. He seems that

  140. it seems maybe nothing can stop him.

  141. He's the He's the force to be reckoned

  142. with in the land.

  143. And yet, the Lord comes and speaks to

  144. him, and he says something perhaps we

  145. don't expect him to say at this point.

  146. He starts with, "Fear not, Abram."

  147. Now, of all the times that you think

  148. Abram might have might have been

  149. fearful,

  150. I don't think I would have thought this

  151. would be one of them. I wouldn't have

  152. thought this would be a time that Abram

  153. would be needing the Lord to come to him

  154. and say, "Fear not."

  155. But, that's what he says.

  156. You know, this is the first time

  157. in the Bible where the Lord says,

  158. "Fear not."

  159. He'll go on to say it many times

  160. throughout the Bible, but this is the

  161. first time.

  162. You know, the Lord knows us, doesn't he?

  163. He knows exactly where our hearts are.

  164. He knows exactly what we are feeling at

  165. any given time.

  166. And he knows what we need.

  167. Sometimes, when we just come through a

  168. spiritual high point or a spiritual

  169. victory in our Christian walk,

  170. we're not necessarily filled with

  171. confidence.

  172. Sometimes,

  173. it can be fear that fills us.

  174. What's going to happen next?

  175. What happens if I mess up now? What

  176. happens if things don't work out the way

  177. I'm thinking?

  178. Abram's been in the land for a number of

  179. years,

  180. and he's had these victories,

  181. and yet there was one thing really

  182. missing, and this thing was eating at

  183. him.

  184. He was getting older. We think he was

  185. probably about somewhere between 80 and

  186. 85 at this point,

  187. and he still had not had a son. And this

  188. thing was eating at him because the Lord

  189. had promised him that he would have an

  190. inheritance. The Lord had promised him

  191. that his family was going to was going

  192. to grow, and he was going to have

  193. descendants,

  194. but yet he didn't have one descendant.

  195. Perhaps Abram was wondering at this

  196. point,

  197. "Was it a mistake?

  198. Should I have left my homeland? Should I

  199. have started wandering around in the

  200. wilderness following the Lord? Should I

  201. have come to the land of Canaan?

  202. Was it worth it?

  203. Would I have just been better off

  204. staying where I was?

  205. Would life have been easier and more

  206. simple? I mean, we wouldn't have had all

  207. these battles. I wouldn't have had

  208. conflict in my family between Lot and

  209. myself.

  210. When the Lord comes to him and says,

  211. "Abram,

  212. do you not fear?

  213. I am your shield and your reward shall

  214. be very great." He gives him two reasons

  215. not to fear. One, "I will be your

  216. shield." And secondly, "Your reward will

  217. be very great."

  218. You notice when the Lord says, "I will

  219. be your shield."

  220. He's not saying he's going to send

  221. something to protect Abraham.

  222. He's not saying he's going to give

  223. Abraham Abraham a shield. But he himself

  224. will be the shield.

  225. The Lord himself is going to is going to

  226. be protect Abraham in his journey.

  227. Why? Why is this important? Because it's

  228. personal to the Lord. His people are

  229. personal to him. He is going to put

  230. himself between Abraham and his enemies

  231. and between Abraham and between and his

  232. fears.

  233. Like a like a tanky soldier, he puts

  234. himself in the way of the enemy's blows

  235. to protect his comrades. The Lord's

  236. going to stand in. He's going to stand

  237. there and he's going to be Abraham's

  238. shield.

  239. And that is what our Lord is going to is

  240. going to be

  241. We read Psalm 3 at the start of the

  242. service where the Lord himself is a

  243. shield to David.

  244. When do we need the Lord to be our

  245. shield?

  246. Do you feel like you don't need a shield

  247. today?

  248. Well,

  249. if you're a Christian, you need the Lord

  250. to be your shield.

  251. We are under We are under attack. Paul

  252. says it it it in Ephesians chapter 6,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  253. "We do not wrestle against flesh and

  254. blood, but against rulers, authorities,

  255. cosmic powers over this present

  256. darkness, against spiritual forces of

  257. evil in the heavenly places. The

  258. Christian life is a battle.

  259. There are

  260. there are spiritual forces against us if

  261. we are seeking to follow the Lords.

  262. We need a shield. We need the Lord to

  263. stand between us and those who would do

  264. us harm, those who would try and pull us

  265. pull us down in our Christian life, who

  266. would try and turn us away from the

  267. Lord, those who would discourage us in

  268. our walk.

  269. We need the Lord to be our shield.

  270. And he's going to be Abraham's shield

  271. here.

  272. But not only a shield, that's not the

  273. only thing the Lord promises to hear,

  274. but he also says, "Your reward will be

  275. great." The Lord Abra- The Lord is going

  276. to give Abraham a great rewards.

  277. Uh and we're going to come to that in in

  278. in a minute, but he's going to

  279. ultimately give him a heritage, the

  280. heritage that he's fearing, the one the

  281. thing that he's he's worried about not

  282. having. He's going to have

  283. a son.

  284. He will not have followed the Lord in

  285. vain. It won't be in vain. This journey

  286. that he's gone on will not be in vain.

  287. The Lord's met with him and he's dealing

  288. with Abraham's fears one by one.

  289. Do you know that? Do you know something

  290. of that when you follow the Lord that

  291. sometimes he sometimes he leads us

  292. places where we will be fearful?

  293. But if we if we come and listen to what

  294. he is saying, if we come and read his

  295. promises in his word,

  296. he deals with our fears. He says, "Look

  297. to me.

  298. I will be your shield. I'll be the one

  299. who's I've one You are not following me

  300. in vain. You are not running in vain.

  301. This Christian life is worth it."

  302. What does the Lord do to build up? He's

  303. not doesn't just use words. What does he

  304. use

  305. after this? Well, he gives Abraham two

  306. signs.

  307. Um

  308. and we'll get we'll dig into that, but

  309. what follows after that verse that we've

  310. just been looking at, verse one, is

  311. a conversation, amazingly a conversation

  312. between God and Abram. So far we've

  313. we've read about it in in Abram's life.

  314. We we've read about the Lord speaks to

  315. Abram, and then Abram obeys. But in this

  316. chapter, we have a conversation. There's

  317. a back and a forth. There's the

  318. The Lord speaks, and then Abram speaks.

  319. Why why do we have this recorded?

  320. Because the Lord he has delight in

  321. hearing what Abram has to say.

  322. The Lord initiates the conversation, and

  323. he knows Abram's needs, he knows his

  324. fears,

  325. but yet

  326. he lets Abra- Abram speak to him.

  327. He has delight to hear what he's going

  328. to say.

  329. And what does Abram say in verse two? "O

  330. Lord God, what will you give me? For I

  331. continue childless, and the heir of my

  332. house is Eliezer of Damascus."

  333. And then he repeats almost the same the

  334. same thing again

  335. in verse three. "Behold, you have given

  336. me no offspring, and a member of my

  337. household will be my heir."

  338. Abram's pouring out his heart to the

  339. Lord.

  340. I wonder if there was a gap between

  341. verse two and verse three.

  342. Maybe Abram Maybe maybe Abram was was

  343. pausing and thinking.

  344. Maybe he was crying.

  345. This is This is something that mattered

  346. so deeply to him.

  347. And he repeats it again.

  348. What use is the reward

  349. when I'm childless? Whatever you give

  350. me, Lord, will pass to a servant born in

  351. my house. And that was the tradition in

  352. in the Near East at that time. Um if if

  353. someone dies without children, that

  354. whoever was the chief amongst their

  355. their um their household, whether that

  356. was a servant or someone else, would um

  357. receive the inheritance.

  358. But the Lord assures Abram that he will

  359. have his own son, and this will be his

  360. reward in verse

  361. 4. This man, Eliezer of Damascus, will

  362. not be your heir. Your very own son

  363. shall be your heir.

  364. And then the Lord gives Abram a sign,

  365. doesn't he? The stars in heaven. He

  366. brought him outside and said, "Look

  367. toward heaven and number the stars if

  368. you are able to number them."

  369. So Abram goes goes outside and he looks

  370. up at the stars and he and and and he's

  371. and he's awed by them. That's like just

  372. like just like we are.

  373. Um I mean he he probably wouldn't be

  374. suffering the effects of light pollution

  375. as we do if we went outside on a clear

  376. night in in Trowbridge. We're not going

  377. to see as many stars. Um but Abram went

  378. out and he looked up and and he saw all

  379. these stars. And the Lord says, "So

  380. shall your offspring be."

  381. Not just one son, not just a small

  382. number, a vast vast number of people are

  383. going to come from your line.

  384. And he gives him a sign.

  385. Why does the Lord give him this sign?

  386. Well,

  387. the Lord gives signs because

  388. we need reminding, don't we?

  389. We when the Lord gives us a promise as

  390. he gives to Abram here,

  391. we are quick to forget the promises.

  392. Um especially if we have to wait a long

  393. time

  394. um for them or we can't see them

  395. straight away.

  396. So the Lord gives Abram a sign.

  397. He's probably got another

  398. 10 or 15 years to go until his son Isaac

  399. is going to be born at this point.

  400. And each time Abram went outside at

  401. night and looked up and saw the stars,

  402. he's going to be reminded of the Lord's

  403. promise to him.

  404. Even though he's not received the

  405. promised son and he has to wait, the

  406. stars would remind him of the promise

  407. the Lord had made and his faith would be

  408. strengthened and he would be assured

  409. that the Lord is going to do this thing,

  410. even though he has to wait.

  411. You know, the Lord gives us similar

  412. signs to help us strengthen our faith.

  413. We don't look up at the stars and and

  414. and think God's promised me X, Y and Z

  415. through looking at the stars, but the

  416. Lord's still giving us signs to help us

  417. strengthen be strengthened in our faith

  418. in the promises that he's given.

  419. Hope and I were had the privilege of

  420. going to a baptism last Sunday and

  421. baptism

  422. is a sign

  423. of what's happening in somebody's heart.

  424. It's a sign that somebody

  425. has as has repented of their sin and put

  426. their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and

  427. their sin has been washed away.

  428. They become a new creation in Christ.

  429. Something has changed on the inside that

  430. you can't see, but baptism is a sign

  431. that you can see on the outside that

  432. reminds you something has changed on the

  433. inside.

  434. We have communion here about every 2

  435. weeks

  436. and communion is a sign, isn't it? When

  437. we come together and we have the bread

  438. and we have the wine,

  439. it's a sign that we have fellowship with

  440. our Lord Jesus Christ, that we're united

  441. together with him. That when he died on

  442. the cross, he died on our behalf and

  443. when he rose,

  444. it he's he's it's it's the it's the

  445. first fruits, it's the promise that we

  446. are going to rise again and as we eat

  447. together and as we remember him,

  448. we are remembering that one day we are

  449. going to be with him.

  450. It's a sign, isn't it? It's something to

  451. remind us of something that's not yet

  452. fulfilled. One day we will be with him.

  453. To make it a bit wider, each Christian

  454. is themselves a sign. When you can see

  455. the work of the Lord working in

  456. somebody's heart, when you can see

  457. things changing, maybe dramatically,

  458. maybe very slowly over time,

  459. it's a sign that God is at work in the

  460. life

  461. um and the lives of people, in lives of

  462. men and women and boys and girls,

  463. changing them.

  464. He's able to work in the lives of

  465. people, bringing them into his kingdom

  466. and transforming them into the likeness

  467. of his son.

  468. These signs help us remember

  469. the things that we can't see and the

  470. things that are yet to come. When we see

  471. them, we're encouraged.

  472. So, what happens

  473. after after Abraham receives a sign in

  474. verse in verse six?

  475. We read,

  476. "He, Abraham, believed the Lord, and he,

  477. the Lord, counted it to him as

  478. righteousness."

  479. And this is such a key verse in here, in

  480. this passage.

  481. He, Abraham, believed the Lord. What

  482. does it mean when it says Abraham

  483. believed the Lord? Well,

  484. it means he took him at his word,

  485. doesn't it? It means that when the Lord

  486. said, "You're going to have a son,"

  487. Abraham said, "I believe you."

  488. And it stands in stark contrast, doesn't

  489. it, to

  490. the account that we have not very many

  491. uh pages earlier in the

  492. um right back in Genesis chapter three.

  493. There we read about

  494. sin entering the world,

  495. um Adam and Eve were in the Garden of

  496. Eden, the serpent comes and he says to

  497. Eve, "Did God say?"

  498. And she believed

  499. the serpent, the creature, over the

  500. creator, over the Lord.

  501. Didn't believe what the Lord had said.

  502. And Adam, he followed in he followed in

  503. her footsteps.

  504. But here

  505. is a reversal of that, isn't it?

  506. The Lord says it, and Abraham believes.

  507. And what happens in verse six?

  508. Abraham believed God, and the Lord

  509. counted it to him as righteousness.

  510. Now, we're not going to we we it's as as

  511. as so much in this verse, we're only

  512. going to start taking the taking the

  513. first layer wrapping off, I think, this

  514. morning. But we're not to think that

  515. this was the moment when Abraham was

  516. was justified, when when things changed

  517. for for Abraham, when his sin was dealt

  518. with. But

  519. we we've read at this point of

  520. Abraham's life, we've we've read about

  521. Abraham believing God, we've read about

  522. him following the Lord,

  523. doing what the Lord's told him to do.

  524. We've read read about him perhaps going

  525. away from the Lord,

  526. not acting very wisely. So, he's he's

  527. had this sort of whole spectrum of his

  528. life so far. But at this point,

  529. Abra- Abraham is believing the Lord when

  530. he's given the promise, and when he sees

  531. the sign of the stars in heaven.

  532. What are we to make of this?

  533. Well, I think here Abraham has already

  534. believed God.

  535. And as he is

  536. as he is seeing in heaven the sign of

  537. the stars, and he's looking up, his

  538. faith is strengthened.

  539. He's assured in of his standing before

  540. the Lord.

  541. And the the Lord

  542. has is is calling him righteous despite

  543. all of his many many failings.

  544. When we make use of the signs the Lord

  545. has given us. We were talking about

  546. signs a few minutes ago. When we make

  547. use of the signs the Lord has given us,

  548. our faith is strengthened, isn't it? And

  549. we receive assurance.

  550. When we come together and we have

  551. communion, if we use that time to recall

  552. and that sign to recall our savior's

  553. dying for us,

  554. our being united to him,

  555. and to remember that he's coming back.

  556. It strengthens our faith, doesn't it? It

  557. strengthens

  558. us and it assures us of God's promises.

  559. And that's what's happening here.

  560. Abraham believed God and something

  561. extraordinary happens.

  562. The Lord counts Abraham's belief as

  563. righteousness to him.

  564. A small sentence with a big impact.

  565. Righteousness means

  566. being morally correct or upright in

  567. one's actions.

  568. But Abraham wasn't always morally

  569. correct, was he?

  570. Was he always upright in his actions?

  571. Uh I think Sarai would disagree with

  572. him, wouldn't she? Um for one, uh when

  573. when when he uh lied about her being his

  574. wife and and she ended up being taken

  575. into Pharaoh's court and all that all of

  576. that all of that sorry uh

  577. uh sorry story that we that we heard

  578. about a couple of chapters ago.

  579. No, Abraham wasn't always

  580. righteous in his own dealings, in his

  581. own thoughts, and in his own actions.

  582. But God declares Abraham is righteous.

  583. How can he do that? What does he mean?

  584. Paul gives a a a

  585. a a commentary on this very passage in

  586. Romans chapter 4. I'll read a small a

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  587. short section, but really the whole of

  588. Romans 4 is really thinking

  589. about this passage um from from Genesis

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  590. chapter 15.

  591. In Romans chapter 4, I'll put it up on

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  592. the screen for you. Romans chapter 4 and

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  593. verse um 20 to 24, um

  594. I'll just read it cuz I can't say it any

  595. better.

  596. No belief made him and that is Abraham

  597. wait waiver concerning the promise of

  598. God, but he grew strong in his faith as

  599. he gave glory to God.

  600. Fully convinced that God was able to do

  601. what he had promised.

  602. That is why his faith was counted to him

  603. as righteousness.

  604. But the words it was counted to him were

  605. not written for his sake alone, but for

  606. ours also. It will be counted to us who

  607. believe in him who raised from the dead

  608. Jesus our Lord.

  609. What's Paul saying in Romans chapter 4?

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  610. He's saying Abraham was fully convinced

  611. that God was able to do what he has

  612. promised. And his faith was counted to

  613. him as righteousness.

  614. Righteousness was given to Abraham.

  615. Not earned. Abraham was not righteous

  616. because of what he'd done. He was not

  617. righteous because his good outweighs his

  618. bad. He was righteous because the Lord

  619. God said, "Abraham is righteous. I

  620. assign righteousness to Abraham. He is

  621. mine.

  622. And despite his failings, he is

  623. righteous. When I look on him, I see

  624. good."

  625. Paul takes this and applies it in that

  626. verse that we just got up on the screen.

  627. When we

  628. repent and believe in Jesus' death and

  629. resurrection, God also counts us as

  630. righteous.

  631. Not for anything we've done, not because

  632. our good outweighs our bad, not because

  633. we've lived a good life or we're going

  634. to live a good life from this point on

  635. or the Lord sees some potential in us.

  636. No, simply because we believed in the

  637. Lord Jesus Christ. It's just like

  638. Abraham believed the promise. We believe

  639. the promise that God has given that

  640. whoever believes on the Lord Jesus

  641. Christ shall not perish, but have

  642. everlasting life.

  643. What an amazing truth that is.

  644. What an amazing truth that God can just

  645. make us

  646. righteous. He can change our standing

  647. before him.

  648. I wonder if Abram thought for the rest

  649. of his life looking up at the stars,

  650. the Lord the Lord declared I was

  651. righteous. On that night when I was

  652. stood somewhere in the in the wilderness

  653. or in the land of Canaan just out in

  654. camp, I looked up at the stars and the

  655. Lord said to me, "Abram, you are

  656. righteous."

  657. And he gave him a promise.

  658. He remembered that night. He remembered

  659. um he remembered the the promises that

  660. he received and the covenant that we're

  661. going to read about in a minute. He

  662. remembered these things.

  663. And he reflected on them. And these

  664. would have been such an encouragement to

  665. his soul.

  666. If you're a Christian, do you reflect on

  667. the promises that you've read in the

  668. Lord's words? Do you reflect on those

  669. promises and those times when

  670. the word spoke to you? When you read

  671. God's word and it hit you so hard

  672. because you knew this is the truth.

  673. Do you ever think on that and be

  674. encouraged in your heart?

  675. Coming back to this idea of communion

  676. which I talked about a couple of times

  677. already, one of the main reasons to have

  678. communion together regularly is to

  679. reflect on what the Lord has done,

  680. express our gratitude to him

  681. as our savior and recommit ourselves to

  682. him as our Lord. It's that point when

  683. we're reflecting on what he's done and

  684. that builds our faith. That encourages

  685. our faith.

  686. Well, I said there'd be two signs and

  687. we've only talked about one sign. What's

  688. the second sign?

  689. Well,

  690. straight after this section in verse

  691. seven,

  692. we have almost the same pattern again.

  693. The Lord gives Abram a promise this time

  694. in verse seven.

  695. I am the Lord who brought you out of Ur

  696. of the Chaldeans to give you this land

  697. to possess.

  698. And straight away Abraham says,

  699. "O Lord God, how am I to know that I

  700. will possess it?" We got the same

  701. pattern again.

  702. The Lord gives Abraham a promise, and

  703. Abraham says,

  704. "But Lord,

  705. I can't see the promise. How am I going

  706. to know that this is going to happen?"

  707. And again, the Lord gives him another

  708. sign. The sign this time is a sign of a

  709. covenant.

  710. And that's our last point this morning,

  711. which is

  712. a one-sided covenant. A one-sided

  713. covenant.

  714. God makes a covenant with Abraham as a

  715. sign.

  716. A formal, binding agreement between

  717. himself and Abraham.

  718. Now, we live in a world where we have

  719. covenants today. Um we might call them

  720. covenants, we might call them we might

  721. call them contracts.

  722. Um they are a big business today.

  723. Lawyers make billions each year

  724. producing contracts and covenants

  725. between different people and different

  726. companies and different organizations.

  727. Why are these contracts made? Well,

  728. because they bring certainty, don't

  729. they?

  730. Normally, they bring certainty when

  731. people find it difficult to trust each

  732. other. Um and they need to know that

  733. this person's going to do what they

  734. said. And if they don't, there's going

  735. to be some consequence.

  736. Isn't it staggering here that the Lord

  737. God chooses to bind himself in a

  738. covenant, in a contract, with Abraham.

  739. Abraham was asking for certainty in

  740. verse 8. How can I know that I'm going

  741. to possess the land, he says. And God

  742. takes seriously his needs for certainty.

  743. God takes seriously the need that we

  744. have for certainty. He doesn't just ask

  745. us to believe with a with a blind faith.

  746. He uh he he takes seriously the need

  747. that we have for

  748. for assurance, for knowing that what he

  749. said will come to pass. And here, he

  750. does this by making a promise with

  751. Abram.

  752. We we Today we would make a covenant

  753. normally between two parties,

  754. um and it might be for a variety of

  755. things. It might be for

  756. um buying and selling a house. And

  757. normally a solicitor has to draw up the

  758. contract. Um it might be full of

  759. impenetrable legalities that you don't

  760. understand, but you have to sign it

  761. anyway, otherwise you're never going to

  762. get to sell your house or buy your

  763. house.

  764. And

  765. you sign it.

  766. And you read all of it. It's quite scary

  767. because there's all these conditions in

  768. there that you have to fulfill. And you

  769. think, "How will I ever How I I hope I

  770. don't have to fulfill some of these

  771. conditions cuz they sound quite scary,

  772. and I don't really know what some of

  773. them even mean." And well, maybe maybe

  774. you do. Maybe it's just me. But

  775. there there are conditions, aren't

  776. there, in in in in any contracts? You

  777. have to keep your side of the bargain.

  778. And if you don't, there will be

  779. penalties. That might be that you get

  780. that that there'll be something imposed

  781. on you. Uh you might have to pay a fine.

  782. Uh you might have something taken away

  783. that you would otherwise have. There are

  784. conditions, and there are penalties for

  785. not keeping it.

  786. And they're normally written on a bit of

  787. paper, like you said, in very small very

  788. small print, and there's space for you

  789. to sign at the bottom.

  790. In Abram's time, one way of making a

  791. covenant was not with a piece of paper

  792. with lots and lots of tiny writing on,

  793. but one way of doing it was

  794. what we have described here in this in

  795. this chapter. And it sounds a bit

  796. gruesome, but this is this was the this

  797. was the practice of the time.

  798. Someone would take an animal, or in this

  799. case multiple animals, and they would

  800. divide the animal They killed the

  801. animal, and they divided it in two. And

  802. the two people who were making the who

  803. were making the covenant would walk

  804. together through the carcass of the dead

  805. animal. Does anyone fancy doing that?

  806. No, I don't fancy it either, but that

  807. was the that was the practice of of of

  808. the day. And the picture was really

  809. clear. The picture was this.

  810. You're saying I'm going to keep my side

  811. of the bargain, otherwise I'm going to

  812. end up like one of these animals.

  813. So, it was pretty clear the picture. It

  814. was saying I'm promising on my life that

  815. I will fulfill my promise.

  816. And you normally the two people doing it

  817. as I said, they would walk through

  818. together, both of them together.

  819. In this picture here, we have

  820. in verse 17,

  821. do you have do you have the animals cut

  822. in two?

  823. Abraham well,

  824. he's falling asleep. We'll talk come

  825. back to that.

  826. And we have a smoking fire pot uh or

  827. fire and a flaming torch passing between

  828. these pieces.

  829. This is the Lord. This is God giving a

  830. sign to Abraham saying, I'm making a

  831. covenant. But where's Abraham?

  832. He's asleep. He's not He's not part of

  833. it. In fact, he is is like he fell

  834. asleep before the signing ceremony even

  835. began. He's not involved in it.

  836. The Lord alone passed through the

  837. pieces. And this is really really

  838. significant. This covenant that the

  839. Lord's making with Abraham to give him

  840. the land to fulfill his promises this

  841. promise

  842. was guaranteed by the Lord

  843. regardless of what Abraham did. It was

  844. unconditional.

  845. It was one-sided. Abraham's descendants

  846. were guaranteed to inherit the land, and

  847. he was going to have descendants because

  848. you can't inherit the land without

  849. having the descendants.

  850. And Abraham

  851. doesn't have any conditions to fulfill

  852. here.

  853. It was a one-sided covenant or a

  854. unilateral covenant.

  855. Abraham had to do nothing except say,

  856. "Yes,

  857. I'm Abraham.

  858. This promise applies to me."

  859. You know what? We have such covenants in

  860. our in our in our um society now.

  861. A single-sided covenant. Um

  862. if you've ever

  863. um

  864. if you've ever been a recipient of of of

  865. of of anything in somebody's will, that

  866. is a single-sided covenant. The The

  867. person who made the will formally

  868. committed to leave something, um whether

  869. it's money or property or something

  870. else, to named relatives and or or our

  871. friends, and they don't have to do

  872. anything except say, "Yes, I'm that

  873. person. This promise applies to me."

  874. They The promise is one-sided, and the

  875. Lord makes this promise, he's going to

  876. keep it. It's not conditional on

  877. anything that Abraham does.

  878. When Jesus met with his disciples in the

  879. upper room before his last meal, before

  880. he was going to be arrested and

  881. crucified, he took this cup of wine, and

  882. he said, "This cup is poured out for

  883. you, and is the new covenant in my

  884. blood."

  885. In this new covenant

  886. Jesus is making with his disciples, this

  887. new promise,

  888. which we remember in communion, he was

  889. promising for them to be part of his

  890. kingdom. He says to them, "I assign to

  891. you, as my father assigned to you, a

  892. kingdom." That's the promise. "And you

  893. may eat and drink at my table in my

  894. kingdom."

  895. Were there conditions?

  896. No. This was an unconditional covenant.

  897. There was nothing the disciples had to

  898. do beyond believing what Jesus was

  899. telling them.

  900. So, the question is, have you believed

  901. what the Lord has promised to you? Have

  902. you believed what the Lord Jesus Christ

  903. says? That he says

  904. that he that that he has died, and that

  905. he has risen

  906. again for you and that one day you will

  907. be with him.

  908. Have you accepted that promise? Are you

  909. like like Abraham, it's a one-way

  910. covenant. All you have to do is say

  911. "Yes, Lord.

  912. I believe.

  913. I believe you. I believe what you have

  914. said."

  915. And one day you'll be with him in his

  916. kingdom.

  917. We've looked at Abraham's journey of

  918. faith today, how the Lord brought him

  919. out from a place of fear to a place of

  920. faith.

  921. And how his faith was strengthened by

  922. the signs that God has given.

  923. And that how God made that unconditional

  924. promise

  925. to him.

  926. Where I don't know where each one of you

  927. are on your journey of faith. We're all

  928. we're all in a in a in different places.

  929. But have you believed the Lord's

  930. promises? When you read the Bible, does

  931. it apply to you? Do you know something

  932. of the reality of this in your life?

  933. I pray that we would each find more

  934. strength

  935. um and be assured of what the Lord has

  936. promised as we read his word, as we

  937. think upon it, and as we talk about him

  938. uh later. Let's just pray and then we're

  939. going to close with a couple of hymns.

  940. Father, we thank you for the promises

  941. that you've made in your words. Great

  942. and precious they are that you've you've

  943. you've just given them to us, Lord, and

  944. Lord, you don't have to make these

  945. promises. You don't have to have bound

  946. yourself by any promise like you bound

  947. yourself by promise to Abraham.

  948. But yet, Lord, you choose to. You choose

  949. to do that. So, you give us assurance

  950. in our faith, to give us certainty, to

  951. give us

  952. things that we can we can rely upon and

  953. and things that can strengthen us so

  954. that we're not just

  955. leaping into the dark. We are

  956. we are We are trusting in the things

  957. that you've said, and we're trusting in

  958. your past faithfulness, and we're

  959. trusting in the things that you've given

  960. us to remind us of your faithfulness.

  961. Lord, if we don't If we've never trusted

  962. you before, Lord,

  963. Lord, would you Would you prompt us

  964. that this is so important that we do

  965. trust

  966. you, that we come to you.

  967. We turn away from sin.

  968. We turn away from all the things that um

  969. that that you don't like, all the

  970. unrighteousness, all the things that go

  971. take us away from you and your perfect

  972. character and your perfect truth.

  973. And that we come to you and say, "Lord,

  974. I have nothing, but you promise that the

  975. one who comes to you, you will not send

  976. away."

  977. Lord, help us to to to cling onto the

  978. promises like this that you have made

  979. and to praise you for it.

  980. In Jesus' name, amen.

  981. We're going to sing a couple of hymns um

  982. as we come to the end of our service

  983. here.

  984. Greater is thy faithfulness. Uh and then

  985. the second hymn, uh

  986. Christus Victor.

  987. Please stand as the band begin to play.
