  1. This is a bit of an epic um chapter of

  2. scripture and I'll be honest with you,

  3. I've spent hours trying to cut it down

  4. and get it into a shape that's easy to

  5. deal with, but it's just big and there's

  6. lots to say. So, I think I failed in

  7. cutting it down. So, apologies. Lock in.

  8. Uh we will do this. Um and uh I'm sure

  9. there'll be many questions still lasting

  10. after today, but that's what home groups

  11. are for. Uh being a parent

  12. it can be hugely challenging

  13. because our children are sinners and

  14. often our children like us they've got

  15. their own opinions own ways of doing

  16. things and they don't like to be told

  17. what to do and uh as a parent maybe

  18. yourself or watching other parents you

  19. will have probably no doubt issued

  20. threats. You know if you don't do this

  21. then this will happen. The problem is,

  22. of course, when we uh threaten things

  23. that aren't possible to do. So, if you

  24. don't put your shoes on, we're going to

  25. leave you here and you're you're at the

  26. beach and you know you're not really

  27. going to leave them there. Or you're on

  28. holiday. They're misbehaving and you

  29. say, "Stop. Otherwise, we're never

  30. coming on holiday again." You think,

  31. "Well, really, is that true? Are you

  32. actually going to do that?"

  33. The trouble is, if we make issue issue

  34. empty threats to our children, they

  35. learn we don't mean what we say. And of

  36. course, if you deal with grown-ups,

  37. adults like that as well, if you keep

  38. saying things and it's not really true,

  39. people learn not to trust you. And it's

  40. it's a real shame when you say things

  41. and people decide they can't believe

  42. what you say.

  43. It undermines everything. But this is

  44. one of the wonderful things about God.

  45. He cannot lie.

  46. So what he says is 100%

  47. true.

  48. what he says we can build our lives

  49. upon. God doesn't make empty threats or

  50. empty promises.

  51. And throughout history, God has laid

  52. down how he will deal with humanity

  53. in what's known as covenants.

  54. A covenant is a binding agreement. It is

  55. God laying out how he will relate to

  56. people. Now, in chapter 15, God made a

  57. covenant with Abraham. But here in

  58. chapter 17, it seems almost like he's

  59. making another one.

  60. But it's probably best to see this as

  61. another stage, the second stage of the

  62. same covenant. Chapter 15 fixes the

  63. pattern of grace and faith. And now God

  64. here is outline um laying out the

  65. details and implications. So the

  66. framework has been laid out in chapter

  67. 15. Now the details are fleshed out and

  68. expanded. And we'll look at this in our

  69. first point. God Almighty,

  70. you might have noticed the sun is out

  71. and it's the holiday season. Together

  72. are off on their holiday this week. Some

  73. of us will be joining them for a day.

  74. And uh I don't know about you, but I

  75. always look forward to my holiday. The

  76. sad thing is I've already had my holiday

  77. this year and now I've got to wait what

  78. seems like a long time before my next

  79. holiday. And some of you might be

  80. thinking, well, you're lucky having a

  81. holiday at all. Some of us don't get one

  82. at all. But we have to wait for these

  83. things. And waiting is often something

  84. that we see a lot in the Bible. It's

  85. easy to miss because sometimes years and

  86. years are summed up in a word or two or

  87. a quick sentence. And you you can't you

  88. don't feel you don't have to live

  89. through those years that are just

  90. quickly uh spoken about in a sentence.

  91. So Abraham was 17 75 when he left Haron

  92. with the promises of a land and the

  93. promise he was going to become a great

  94. nation. But at that point he had no

  95. children. He waited 11 agonizing years

  96. and nothing happened.

  97. But then we get to chapter 16. Abraham

  98. was uh Abraham was 86 years old when

  99. Ishmael was born for Abraham. This would

  100. have been a wonderful moment. It seemed

  101. as though God's promises were finally

  102. coming true. Yes, they had to help God

  103. out a bit to make it work. And yes, it

  104. had been messy and it was far from

  105. ideal, but between Abraham, Sarai, and

  106. Hagar, they got there. And Ishmael is

  107. born and he grows. And we we don't hear

  108. that God spoke with Abraham during this

  109. time. If God did speak to Abraham in

  110. this time, it wasn't significant enough

  111. to record.

  112. It's almost like everything was on pause

  113. for those 13 years. It was around 13

  114. years later when Ishmael would be

  115. hitting puberty. And then later on in

  116. Judaism, the bar mitzvah would take

  117. place. That's when a Jewish boy would be

  118. recognized as accountable for obeying

  119. the law for themselves. So effectively,

  120. Ishmael's childhood had come to an end.

  121. And it's at that point that the Lord

  122. appears to Abraham again. That's a long

  123. wait, 13 years of not really hearing

  124. from God.

  125. Our culture is one of the immediate,

  126. isn't it? We don't wait. Well, our

  127. parents used to save up or my parents

  128. used to save up for things for years and

  129. then finally you would get them. Now, if

  130. we want something, we buy it on credit.

  131. If you wrote a letter, you wouldn't

  132. expect to reply for days or weeks even.

  133. But now, if someone doesn't reply to

  134. your text within a few hours, you're

  135. thinking, "What's wrong? Have I did I

  136. send that? You know, what's going on?"

  137. Oh, if you want to know something, you

  138. expect the internet or AI to be able to

  139. give you the instant answer. And we can

  140. carry that attitude into our

  141. expectations of God. It can be hard

  142. to wait.

  143. But God doesn't work to our timetable.

  144. God isn't some giant AI

  145. waiting for our inquiries.

  146. God does things in his perfect timing.

  147. And whilst God never delays longer than

  148. is required, sometimes a wait is

  149. necessary.

  150. And to learn to wait upon the Lord, to

  151. learn to trust him is actually a big

  152. part of the lesson.

  153. And it can't be rushed.

  154. So if God doesn't answer your prayer in

  155. six minutes or six days or six weeks or

  156. even six years, you know, I prayed about

  157. it and and nothing happened.

  158. Don't be tempted to think God doesn't

  159. care or assume he's not listening or has

  160. forgotten you or has abandoned you. God

  161. does all things in his proper time.

  162. It's always been the case, but it's easy

  163. to miss in a story like this where you

  164. just sort of read through and you can

  165. read through a life in a few minutes.

  166. There is this pause for around 13 years

  167. whilst Ishmael grew up.

  168. Perhaps Abraham wasn't even aware of it

  169. because he had he had what he wanted. He

  170. thought he had what had been promised to

  171. him, the promised son.

  172. But he didn't have the promised son yet.

  173. He's taken this detour.

  174. But in case we think that the awful

  175. events of chapter 16 have derailed God's

  176. plans and God has given up on Abraham

  177. and gone to find someone else,

  178. we are assured, no, that is not the

  179. case. God hasn't given up on on Abraham.

  180. And God is faithful despite Abraham and

  181. Sarah's sin and their missteps.

  182. We can be so quick to write people off,

  183. can't we? They said that, they did that.

  184. I'm I'm finished with them. God is so

  185. patient, so loving, so kind. What a

  186. relief and encouragement it is for those

  187. of us who are prone to getting things so

  188. wrong

  189. to know that that doesn't mean God's

  190. just finished with us when we blow it.

  191. But God appears to Abraham and one of

  192. the first things he does is clarify who

  193. he is. And if we are going to entrust

  194. our lives to God,

  195. it is vital that we know who God is,

  196. isn't it?

  197. Verse one, I am God Almighty.

  198. That translates El Shai.

  199. That's a name that carries the idea that

  200. God is the allsufficient one.

  201. He is all powerful.

  202. He is sovereign.

  203. Why did Abraham need to know that

  204. especially?

  205. Because he and actually we need to know

  206. God is more than capable of fulfilling

  207. his promises.

  208. He doesn't need Abraham's help. He he

  209. need he wants Abraham's faith to be in

  210. him because God is the giver. He is the

  211. sustainer. He is the the one who

  212. provides all things.

  213. Don't we need to remember that when

  214. things are not turning out as we hoped

  215. or imagined?

  216. God is El Shai.

  217. God almighty.

  218. If there's a delay, there's a reason.

  219. Second thing God does is call Abraham to

  220. walk before him. That is to live in such

  221. a way as to acknowledge and honor God.

  222. God isn't to be just a little little

  223. part of his life. You know, the

  224. religious bit. I'm going to do my my

  225. churchy bit. Abraham's whole life was to

  226. be lived out in a reference to God and

  227. before God.

  228. Because

  229. if God is to be our God,

  230. then he needs to be our God, doesn't he?

  231. Not just a God for a day or an hour or a

  232. moment or when we feel like it. It's no

  233. different as New Testament believers. We

  234. are to be always looking to El Shadai,

  235. the God Almighty, and living our lives

  236. out before him. If your faith is merely

  237. showing up on a Sunday morning and

  238. that's it, that really is no faith at

  239. all. Our faith is to be lived out daily

  240. before God,

  241. constantly looking to him, calling upon

  242. Elshadai, the God Almighty.

  243. So Abraham was to walk live faithfully

  244. before God but also to live with

  245. integrity. Verse one and be blameless.

  246. That's what it means integrity. Now it

  247. doesn't mean that he is to be sinless.

  248. Rather this is a call for Abraham to

  249. ensure his character and his behavior is

  250. upright and sincere.

  251. He is to be sincere and transparent

  252. before God and man. For Abraham and for

  253. us, perfect sinlessness

  254. isn't possible this side of glory. But

  255. we are called to live in a way that is

  256. right before God. It matters how we

  257. live. If our faith is in God, we will be

  258. careful how we live.

  259. And it's worth noting God isn't saying

  260. this to make Abraham's life miserable

  261. or just to hem him or spoil his fun. God

  262. says this because he intends to bless

  263. him. He intends to be his God. And the

  264. fitting response to that is faithfulness

  265. and obedience. If God is our God, our

  266. lives need to be God- centered because

  267. actually that is at the heart of this

  268. covenant and most covenants

  269. to know and enjoy God himself.

  270. If we miss that, if we think I I just

  271. want the blessings and not God, we are

  272. missing the point because God is the

  273. ultimate blessing.

  274. He is love, he is light, he is truth, he

  275. is life itself.

  276. God is at the heart of the covenant, at

  277. the heart of the blessing.

  278. So El Shadai appears to Abraham and

  279. calls him to walk before him and and he

  280. can bless him. And Abraham's response,

  281. can you see it? Can you see it? Is to

  282. fall on his face. He fell on his face.

  283. Now, Abraham's 99 years old at this

  284. point, but this fall isn't from frailty.

  285. He hasn't had a fall.

  286. It's a fall of worship

  287. and reverence and awe.

  288. Again, this is wholly appropriate

  289. behavior for a Christian. It's what we

  290. find the Apostle uh John doing in the

  291. last book of the Bible. So we find at

  292. the first book the book book of the

  293. Bible someone falling on their face

  294. before God. At the last book of the

  295. Bible there's John falling on his face

  296. before the risen savior.

  297. He falls at the at his feet. And perhaps

  298. it would help our attitude and our

  299. worship

  300. if we did this too. And that sounds a

  301. bit strange to our modern ears, doesn't

  302. it? because it's not something we're

  303. accustomed to to doing actually

  304. physically falling

  305. on our face or front or whatever before

  306. God. It it feels a bit weird, but but

  307. why not?

  308. Why not? If he is your God,

  309. isn't this quite appropriate to actually

  310. bow before him? Personally, I I find it

  311. quite helpful. You know, we say, "Oh,

  312. worship's in the heart and it's not a

  313. matter of your Yeah, that's that's true.

  314. But I find it quite helpful sometimes to

  315. physically enact what is happening in my

  316. heart

  317. before God. Perhaps the really odd thing

  318. is if he is our God that we never

  319. actually bow before him. May maybe

  320. that's the weird thing.

  321. If we're to trust God with our lives and

  322. give him our worship, we need to

  323. remember who he is.

  324. El should I God

  325. Almighty?

  326. And it's all sufficient. God is full of

  327. promises. And that's our second point.

  328. Promises restated.

  329. After years of waiting and all the wrong

  330. turns of chapter 16, God comes to

  331. Abraham and restates the promises.

  332. Abraham shall be a father of multitude

  333. of nations. This is a big promise, isn't

  334. it? It's not just you're going to be a

  335. father of a nation. It's not just going

  336. to be you're a father of a of a few

  337. nations. It's a father of a multitude,

  338. many, many, many nations. Not only that,

  339. verse six, I will make you exceedingly

  340. fruitful. You can see the genealogies um

  341. that work out here physically from him

  342. in chapter 25 and chapter 26, sorry, 36.

  343. You can see that that happened. But this

  344. promise isn't limited to Abraham's

  345. physical offspring. It's one of the the

  346. verses she read out for us earlier. For

  347. those who are in Christ by faith, we are

  348. now counted as Abraham's offspring. Heir

  349. heirs according to the promise. It's

  350. Galatians 3:29 if you want to look it up

    Galatians 3:29

  351. later.

  352. So these promises given to Abraham these

  353. thousands of years ago are still being

  354. fulfilled even today. He's still getting

  355. more offspring in the form of us

  356. spiritually. We are his offspring.

  357. But that's not all. Kings shall come

  358. from you. God says, and again that that

  359. that was very true. Many kings came from

  360. Abraham

  361. and eventually that included the the

  362. messianic king Jesus.

  363. God then reaffirms the promises of the

  364. land for his offspring which that was a

  365. real land. But again, ultimately that

  366. finds its fulfillment in a heavenly

  367. land. You can read about that in Hebrews

    Hebrews 11:16

  368. 11:16. I'm not going to read it to you,

  369. but you can look it up later. Abraham

  370. tried to bring about God's blessing in

  371. his own way by his own methods. But you

  372. know, when we do that,

  373. we're aiming too low. Abraham was aiming

  374. too low. He thought if he could get

  375. himself a son, then then it would all

  376. work himself out. And and that's always

  377. the case when we think we know better

  378. than God. We aim too low. We settle for

  379. too little. God has so much more to give

  380. him if he would trust God. Not just

  381. little is Ishmael and the things the

  382. people that would come from him. It was

  383. this huge heritage. When we decide we

  384. are not going to trust God, we're going

  385. to go it our own way. We're going to get

  386. that thing that he said we shouldn't

  387. because we think we need that. We are

  388. aiming too low. We are settling for too

  389. little. We need to trust God for what

  390. he's promised us.

  391. God has given Abraham some big promises.

  392. And to mark the occasion, Abraham is

  393. given I'm glad uh Abraham is given a new

  394. name. Um uh Abraham means exalted

  395. father.

  396. Abraham means father of a multitude.

  397. Father of a multitude. So exalted father

  398. to father of a multitude. Now bearing in

  399. mind Abraham at this point he only had

  400. one child, one son. And now when anyone

  401. speaks to him and calls his name, it's

  402. going to be a reminder he is the father

  403. of the multitude, which would seem a bit

  404. funny because he's only got one son.

  405. Well, not only did he get a new name,

  406. Sarah did, too. In fact, God is careful

  407. to spell out to Abraham that these

  408. promises include Sarai. She is not a

  409. problem to be bypassed.

  410. And in a touching touching section, the

  411. Lord says how he will bless her.

  412. God will give Abraham a son by Sarai and

  413. she will become nations and kings will

  414. come from her. Don't underestimate her

  415. importance, Abraham. She's part of the

  416. miracle of grace. She gets the promises.

  417. She gets the blessings, too.

  418. And actually the impossibility

  419. of her old age and her baronness they

  420. are an essential part of the plan

  421. Abraham because it proves the promise

  422. doesn't come because of his crafty

  423. cunning or his virile fertility.

  424. This blessing is a miraculous gift that

  425. can only be achieved by the hand of El

  426. Shai, God Almighty.

  427. It has to be seen this is from God and

  428. not by any other way.

  429. So Abraham and Sarah they get they get

  430. new names. Now, as Christians,

  431. we might not be given individual new

  432. names for everyday use, but we are known

  433. now by Christ's name. And our existence

  434. is no less miraculous. As we saw in our

  435. recent studies in Ephesians, we were

  436. dead in our sin. We were far from God.

  437. We were in the dark. We were without

  438. hope. But now in Christ, everything has

  439. changed. We are now called from being

  440. saint of sinners to being called saints.

  441. We are called the sons of God. We are

  442. new creatures in Christ. We are known by

  443. his name. We are known as Christians.

  444. We are known by Christ's name. And now

  445. every time you tell someone, "Yeah, I'm

  446. a Christian." Don't be ashamed of that.

  447. You're speaking about the miracle that

  448. God has done in your life to take you

  449. from life from from death to life. It's

  450. the impossible miracle that has happened

  451. in you.

  452. And the impossible

  453. is what has occurred in us. The

  454. impossible was what needed to occur in

  455. Abraham's situation as well if God's

  456. promises was going to come true. Because

  457. firstly, his old barren wife will be

  458. having a baby. And that was impossible.

  459. It was so impossible that Abraham laughs

  460. because the idea was totally absurd. It

  461. was so out there as as to be funny.

  462. However spritly they may have been,

  463. clearly Sarah was well beyond natural

  464. child bear bearing age at at 90. And

  465. we'll think more about this next week.

  466. Uh but God was making it abundantly

  467. sure, abundantly clear to Abraham that

  468. all this blessing can only come about by

  469. his hand. But Abraham isn't quite get it

  470. yet. And he thinks it would make much

  471. more sense if the promises could be

  472. fulfilled through Ishmael, the son. He's

  473. already got no need for a miracle. We

  474. got the son. Why? Why doesn't that just

  475. happen? If only that could be the case.

  476. Humanly speaking, that makes sense. But

  477. no. If Abraham thought God had needed

  478. his help and that Ishmael was the son of

  479. promise, he was wrong. God had his plan

  480. and that was how it was going to work.

  481. And although God agrees to graciously

  482. bless Ishmael as well, the son of the

  483. promise is not yet born. And so the

  484. promises were restated. The plan for an

  485. amazing blessing is given with more

  486. clarity. And then the time timetable

  487. here is set. Hasn't been set before this

  488. point, but it's set here. Verse 21. This

  489. time next year, Sarah will bear you

  490. Isaac, whose name means he laughs. So

  491. every time Sarah or Abraham call, Isaac,

  492. Isaac, can you put your shoes on? Yeah.

  493. Now, yeah. Seriously, you know, they

  494. would remember that name he laughs. The

  495. time when they they found it really hard

  496. to believe what God had said.

  497. It was a reminder that Isaac existed

  498. because of the promises of God, because

  499. of El Shai, the God Almighty. At the

  500. time, it seemed impossible, so they

  501. laughed. But that is how awesome God

  502. Almighty is.

  503. I wonder if we have forgotten who our

  504. God is.

  505. Have we mostly given up on prayer

  506. because it just doesn't seem to work?

  507. Why bother coming to the prayer

  508. meetings? We don't share the gospel out

  509. of fear because well, it never seems to

  510. work anyway. You know, we sort of walk

  511. with God when he happens to be going in

  512. my direction and giving me what we want.

  513. But if it, you know, if the two diverge,

  514. I'm going to go my way.

  515. Maybe we fear missing out if we walk

  516. faithfully all the way with the Lord.

  517. Maybe we need to remember who our God

  518. is. Else should I, the sovereign, the

  519. allsufficient one, Lord God Almighty.

  520. You may have to learn to wait,

  521. but you can trust him.

  522. Well, as well as revealing one of his

  523. own names, reaffirming his promises and

  524. giving them new names, God also gave

  525. them a sign of the covenant. And we'll

  526. look at that in our final point,

  527. immediate obedience.

  528. Okay. It's hot, isn't it? Should we just

  529. have a take a deep breath or something

  530. or wiggle around and just I don't know,

  531. stretch or something to get some air in

  532. your lungs. It is hot. Um I was thinking

  533. maybe I should stop there, but ah I

  534. think we need to press on. Okay, just a

  535. little bit more. Okay, we can do this.

  536. When you start a job, uh you will

  537. usually be given a contract setting out

  538. the expectations and the

  539. responsibilities.

  540. It's important to have, you know, that

  541. contract of expectations. So, everyone

  542. knows where you stand. You do this, we

  543. do that. You know, that's helpful. As I

  544. mentioned at the beginning, God deals

  545. with humanity on the basis of what is

  546. known as covenants. A covenant is a

  547. divinely imposed agreement that

  548. stipulates how God and man relate to

  549. each other. In any covenant, the main

  550. parties are stated as here. So, verse

  551. one, I am God Almighty. That's one.

  552. Verse four, behold, my covenant is with

  553. you, Abraham and your descendants. So,

  554. we know who's involved there. Uh, God

  555. and Abraham and his descendants. But

  556. just notice, he says, behold my

  557. covenant. My covenant. This is God's

  558. covenant that he makes with Abraham.

  559. He and we

  560. don't get to decide or negotiate.

  561. God sets out how people can relate to

  562. him. And that's worth noting because

  563. humanity has so lost sight of how

  564. awesomely transcendent God is,

  565. how very different he is, how majestic,

  566. how above everything else he is, how the

  567. whole universe depends on God. We've

  568. lost sight of that.

  569. Now we imagine we can approach God as

  570. equals however we might fancy.

  571. We imagine that we are in a position to

  572. bargain or dictate or even correct God

  573. and say we don't really like that bit.

  574. We're just going to change that or

  575. reinterpretate that and interpret it

  576. that.

  577. But we are completely dependent upon him

  578. for everything.

  579. Even just the very idea of approaching

  580. him and not dying depends on the fact

  581. that God has made a way that that can

  582. happen because for sinners to stand in

  583. the presence of a holy God, it would be

  584. fatal. So the very fact that we can

  585. approach God at all is a sign of his

  586. mercy.

  587. That's this is the case in the new new

  588. covenant as well. This is how we relate

  589. to God post the cross. There is

  590. continuity with what went before but it

  591. but what we have now is new. It is a

  592. better way. Hebrews 8:6 by which we can

    Hebrews 8:6

  593. know and relate to God. So now we come

  594. to God. How do we come in our own names?

  595. No. We we come in the name of Jesus. We

  596. are forgiven by his sacrifice washed

  597. clean by his blood with Jesus as our

  598. high priest clothed in his

  599. righteousness. We can only approach God

  600. because of Jesus and through Jesus.

  601. There aren't many different ways to come

  602. to God. You can't look at all the

  603. different religions like a box of

  604. chocolates and choose the one you fancy.

  605. Oh, I like that. I'll have that one. No,

  606. that that that's complete completely

  607. wrong. No religion, no amount of trying

  608. to obey the law or just trying to do the

  609. right thing is enough. God has made

  610. Jesus the way. As Jesus says in John

    John 14:6

  611. 14:6, I am the way and the truth and the

  612. life. No one comes to the father except

  613. through me. So Jesus was either lying or

  614. wrong

  615. or he was telling the truth. And he is

  616. the only way. The only way to know to

  617. God and enjoy peace with him is to come

  618. in the way that he has made. That is

  619. through faith in Jesus. And that's what

  620. the covenants are about. God laying down

  621. how he will relate to us and deal with

  622. us. We're familiar with the the the new

  623. covenant hopefully, but there were a lot

  624. of covenants that came before. But um at

  625. the the heart of most of these

  626. covenants, including the new covenant,

  627. is the promise that God will be their

  628. God and they will be his people. That's

  629. the basic idea. And that's again, that's

  630. where we end up in Revelation chapter

  631. 21:3. That's the the end goal. That's

  632. where we're going to. God will be his

  633. God. uh new humanity in Christ will be

  634. with him uh for all eternity. But we're

  635. that's that's kind of there. We're not

  636. there yet. But this the same idea we get

  637. here in this Abrahamic covenant. So

  638. verse seven, and I will establish my

  639. covenant between you uh between me and

  640. you and your offspring after you

  641. throughout their generations for an

  642. everlasting covenant. Here it is. This

  643. is this is the the heart of it. To be

  644. God to you and to your offspring after

  645. you. That means that they will recognize

  646. and trust and worship God as God and God

  647. will protect them and provide for them

  648. and bless them. That's at the heart of

  649. the covenant. It's God and his people.

  650. Now, often in covenants, not in all of

  651. them, but often in covenants, they have

  652. conditions.

  653. So whereas inaugurating the covenant is

  654. entirely God's initiative,

  655. confirming it involves a human response.

  656. God has just outlined all the wonderful

  657. things he would do. But there's

  658. something for Abraham to do too. So

  659. firstly, we've already seen uh verse

  660. one, he's got to live in a way that is

  661. fitting for one of God's people, upright

  662. before God, transparent, sincere.

  663. But but also verse N, as for you. So

  664. this is Abraham's bit. as for you. And

  665. God goes on to explain that every male

  666. must be circumcised. And the

  667. consequences of not obeying this

  668. stipulation is that they will be cut off

  669. from God's people. So if they won't obey

  670. God and if they won't make God their

  671. God, they can't have God as their God.

  672. It it's kind of common sense, isn't it?

  673. It makes sense. If you don't if you

  674. won't have God as your God and treat him

  675. like God, then you won't he won't be

  676. your God. That's that's the idea here.

  677. So circumcision is the sign of the

  678. covenant and it represents the part of

  679. the covenant that Abraham and his

  680. descendants were to keep. Circumcision

  681. is the sign that they were counted as

  682. counted God as their God and that they

  683. counted themselves as God's people.

  684. Circumcision represented their faith in

  685. God and their obedience to God. Sadly,

  686. as the years went by, the spiritual

  687. significance became lost and it became

  688. more about just the the physical act.

  689. And Paul offers a corrective in the New

  690. Testament in Romans 28 for this. He

  691. says, "For no one is a Jew who is merely

  692. one outwardly, nor is circumcision

  693. outward and physical, but a Jew is one

  694. inwardly. And the circumcision is is a

  695. matter of the heart, by the spirit, not

  696. by the letter." The outward sign was

  697. meant to demonstrate an inward reality

  698. that they trusted God. They are

  699. committed to him, that they are his

  700. people, and they're committed to his

  701. ways. So the sign was to be accompanied

  702. by real faith lived out in our real

  703. life.

  704. So why don't we practice circumcision

  705. today? Well, because in Christ

  706. the covenant of circumcision is

  707. fulfilled and we we have already

  708. actually been circumcised. So, if you've

  709. got your Bibles open, good bit of waking

  710. up exercise here. Colossians chapter 2

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  711. 11. Colossians chapter 2 11. Fan

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  712. yourself with those pages as you turn

  713. the turn the the pages of your Bible.

  714. Colossians chapter 2 11. So the idea

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  715. here is is that we've already been

  716. circumcised. This has already happened

  717. to us.

  718. Colossians chapter 2 11. In him also you

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  719. were circumcised with a circumcision

  720. made without hands. Now just notice that

  721. bit. Circumcision made without hands.

  722. This is not a human thing. It's not

  723. something that people do to other people

  724. here that he's talking about. This is a

  725. circumcision made without hands.

  726. Remember that. is important by right. So

  727. in him also you were circumcised with

  728. the circumcision made without hands by

  729. putting off the body of the flesh by the

  730. circumcision of Christ.

  731. The spiritual reality is demonstrated by

  732. the physical circumcision that went on

  733. in the Old Testament. That's what the

  734. two are linked. See the physical was

  735. meant to illustrate the spiritual but

  736. now that takes place in our hearts by

  737. the spirit in Christ.

  738. The New Testament fulfillment of

  739. circumcision is performed in Christ on

  740. our hearts to those who accept Christ

  741. and his work by faith and God then

  742. becomes our God and we become his people

  743. in Christ.

  744. Now the sign of that is baptism.

  745. So the sign of being in Christ is

  746. baptism.

  747. Baptism is a picture of what Christ has

  748. done in our hearts by faith. He is our

  749. God and we are his people. That's why we

  750. don't practice infant baptism here in

  751. this church because baptism we believe

  752. is a sign or a picture of what we hope.

  753. It's not a sign or a picture of what we

  754. hope will happen. It's a sign or is a

  755. picture of what we believe has already

  756. happened as per Colossians chapter 2

    Colossians 2:11

  757. verse 11. A circumcision made without

  758. hands. So there's there's links between

  759. baptism and circumcision. But there's

  760. also not a straight line between

  761. circumcision and baptism. Circumcision

  762. is fulfilled in our hearts. And then

  763. baptism is the picture of what Christ

  764. has done in our hearts.

  765. So if Abraham had to make a response to

  766. what was done for him, is there a

  767. response for us to make under the new

  768. covenant?

  769. It's the same as Abraham

  770. to believe God.

  771. Romans chapter 10:9.

  772. If you confess with your mouth that

  773. Jesus is Lord and believe, note that

  774. word, believe in your heart that God

  775. raised him from the dead, you will be

  776. saved. Jesus says in John chapter uh 6

  777. 29, this is the work of God that you

  778. here it is. Believe in him whom he has

  779. sent. Do you see? Believe, believe,

  780. believe.

  781. Remember on what basis? And Hugh backed

  782. this up, read from from a verse that

  783. helped bring this to clarity. What basis

  784. was Abraham declared righteous?

  785. It wasn't on the basis of circumcision

  786. or something that he done or some

  787. ritual. Genesis 15:6, here it is. And he

    Genesis 15:6

  788. believed the Lord and he counted it to

  789. him as righteousness.

  790. It's the same for us. We believe, we put

  791. our tra tr trust in Christ because

  792. Christ has done it all. And therefore,

  793. the only right response to the new

  794. covenant is faith in Christ. We believe

  795. the promise of God in Christ. That's the

  796. beauty of the gospel.

  797. That's it. We believe in him and what

  798. he's done.

  799. As we close, those are good words to

  800. some of you. As we close,

  801. we see that Abraham's faith was not

  802. static.

  803. Faith isn't an abstract feeling just

  804. hanging in a vacuum somewhere that you

  805. kind of just think, yeah, I stoke the

  806. faith somehow, waft it up or something.

  807. Faith acts. Faith responds. Faith moves.

  808. Faith obeys. Abraham's faith in God

  809. moved him to immediate obedience. Now,

  810. given the uh personal and painful nature

  811. of what he was commanded to do, I'm sure

  812. some of us might have been tempted to

  813. just hold on a bit like, well, well,

  814. let's just have a few days, prepare

  815. ourselves, think about this, you know,

  816. just make sure we know what we're doing.

  817. Um, but as that's not what we see with

  818. Abraham at all, is it? He is immediately

  819. obedient. And Abraham would have had

  820. hundreds of men in his his household by

  821. now. We are talking like possibly nearly

  822. a thousand people by this point. A

  823. thousand men. You he would have had many

  824. men. This was not a quick or easy or

  825. pleasant task. And and also just note

  826. with all the men having been having been

  827. circumcised on the same day.

  828. They would have been very vulnerable

  829. from a security point of view.

  830. So this is itself an act of faith doing

  831. this to all the men at the same time.

  832. This is like Lord we are trusting you

  833. with this very personal thing and

  834. trusting you to protect us and and keep

  835. us throughout as as we recover from

  836. this. His real faith wasn't just some

  837. airy fairy thing that had no connection

  838. to life. Uh it was uh it was immediate.

  839. It was painful but it was trusting

  840. obedience. That's what his faith led him

  841. to do. I wonder

  842. how quickly we are to obey when we know

  843. the Lord is speaking to us. But if

  844. you've tuned out, try and tune back in

  845. at this moment, okay?

  846. Perhaps you have yet to put your

  847. personal faith in Jesus at all.

  848. You hear him calling to you to entrust

  849. your life to him. You hear him. You hear

  850. him, but for some reason, there's part

  851. of you that's just refusing to come. Can

  852. I ask you why are you delaying? What is

  853. it?

  854. Why will you not put your faith, your

  855. trust in Christ?

  856. Or perhaps you have done that and you're

  857. a Christian. You've been a Christian for

  858. a while now, but you're aware that

  859. there's some sin that God is calling you

  860. to cut out. You know, he keeps reminding

  861. you, touching your conscience, and you

  862. you know, you know it's there. He's

  863. trying to not listen. Why are you

  864. delaying? Why are you not obeying?

  865. Is your sin more precious to you than

  866. God?

  867. When God calls us from our sin, it's

  868. always for our good. It might be

  869. difficult, but he's always calling it us

  870. away from sin. And that's always a good

  871. thing. So why not now, even now, entrust

  872. yourself to him. Bow in surrender before

  873. him. seek his help, his power to help

  874. you move away from that sin. And if you

  875. need to pray the prayer, "Lord, I

  876. believe. Help my unbelief."

  877. Do it. Say it. Pray it. Why are you

  878. delaying?

  879. Or perhaps the Lord is calling you in a

  880. bit more of a positive way

  881. to put yourself at his disposal in some

  882. new and scary way. You kind of think I I

  883. really should be volunteering to do that

  884. or maybe I should be doing this or you

  885. know there's something there. It's a

  886. little bit scary and

  887. it's a positive act of obedience and you

  888. kind of feel like you should be doing

  889. it. Then then why are you delaying? What

  890. are you waiting for? Abraham believed

  891. God and responded in obedience.

  892. And that's what genuine faith is

  893. compelled to do. It responds to God to

  894. his promises. It reaches out not

  895. trusting oneself, but trusting in God. I

  896. don't know how this is going to turn

  897. out, Lord, but I'm I I will trust you.

  898. That's what faith does.

  899. So, as we close, take a few moments to

  900. consider

  901. if there is something specific

  902. that you need to be obedient in. Just

  903. shut your eyes and consider is there

  904. something you need to be obedient in?

  905. Father God,

  906. we thank you that you are El Shedai,

  907. God Almighty,

  908. the one who is above all, who knows all,

  909. who is all. Lord, we can come humbly

  910. into your presence now. Or we do so

  911. confessing,

  912. our sin,

  913. our reluctance,

  914. perhaps even our love of things that are

  915. wrong. Father, forgive us.

  916. Have mercy on us. Turn our hearts

  917. towards you. Lord, show us more of

  918. yourself. Capture our hearts, Lord.

  919. Help. Help us. We do believe. Help our

  920. unbelief.

  921. Lord, we thank you that you promised to

  922. be with us, to help us, to strengthen

  923. us, that there is power for us in the

  924. Lord Jesus. That your Holy Spirit lives

  925. in those who are in Christ, that we are

  926. not alone, that he will help us.

  927. So Lord, we come to you Lord. Pray that

  928. you would have your way in us even this

  929. morning in Jesus name. Amen.
