  1. Some days, you know,

  2. going to be big.

  3. Like when you have important exam

  4. results and everything has been leading

  5. up to that moment, you know it's going

  6. to be a big day.

  7. Or perhaps for those of you who are

  8. married, when you get married, you know

  9. that's going to be a big day. Or perhaps

  10. even when you get baptized, it's a it's

  11. a big day, isn't it?

  12. Other days you think are going to be

  13. normal.

  14. But then they take a very unexpected

  15. turn.

  16. Uh you go to work and your boss takes

  17. you aside and says,

  18. "Your services are no longer needed."

  19. Or the car crash you never saw saw

  20. coming.

  21. Some of our days

  22. will be etched on our minds

  23. forever.

  24. And we've reached a day that would have

  25. been etched on Sarah's mind

  26. >> [snorts]

  27. >> forever. The day that she laughed

  28. at the Lord. And he heard her.

  29. The day she lied to the Lord

  30. and he called her out.

  31. But that wasn't all that happened on

  32. this day. It was also the day when God

  33. showed her amazing grace

  34. and brought forth a renewed faith in

  35. her.

  36. The Lord appeared to Abraham and but as

  37. we'll see in the first instance,

  38. the Lord is really coming for Sarah.

  39. So let's look at this remarkable account

  40. in our first point, the Lord appears.

  41. Uh

  42. that's good. All right, well, um we as a

  43. family were watching this film the other

  44. day called A Remarkably Bright

  45. Creatures. It's about a lady who cleans

  46. her local aquarium and she has a special

  47. bond with an octopus. It sounds daft and

  48. it is a little bit daft,

  49. but we all enjoyed it. Um about halfway

  50. through, one of my daughters, Ruby, she

  51. thought she'd sussed out the plot. And

  52. as she explained it, I felt all the cogs

  53. in my head sort of whirring, and pieces

  54. were coming into place. I thought,

  55. "Yeah." And I was like I was getting I

  56. was starting to understand what was

  57. going on. As it turned out, she was only

  58. half right.

  59. Sorry, Ruby. Don't mean to embarrass

  60. you.

  61. Um but but there was this gradual

  62. revelation, this gradual dawning of what

  63. was going on in the film.

  64. And in this account, it's not clear uh

  65. how much Abraham knows and at what point

  66. he knows it. Of course, he may have

  67. instantly recognized the Lord. In

  68. chapter 17, he's already met with the

  69. Lord, but was that in the same way? Did

  70. he appear in the same form? We're not

  71. entirely sure.

  72. Many people suspect the truth is that it

  73. dawns upon him. What's happening dawns

  74. upon him as this account unfolds.

  75. But by the end of it, he is in no doubt.

  76. He is speaking to the Lord.

  77. Now, what we have here is what's known

  78. as a theophany.

  79. It's sometimes uh called a christophany.

  80. I'm going to call it a Basically, it's a

  81. theophany. It's when God

  82. is seen. When you can see God in some

  83. way. That's what a theophany is.

  84. And this whole account, this whole

  85. theophany,

  86. there is ambiguity.

  87. He's ambiguous. It's it's it's

  88. mysterious.

  89. But there is so much we can learn about

  90. it, even though we might have questions

  91. about it.

  92. We don't know how long it's been since

  93. the events of chapter 17.

  94. With all that stuff about circumcision

  95. and all that that we thought about last

  96. week. Maybe a week, maybe 2 weeks, maybe

  97. a little bit more. We don't know, but

  98. probably not that long.

  99. But Abraham

  100. is here. He's chilling at the the door

  101. of his tent. He's He's doing that

  102. because it's midday.

  103. It's siesta time. It was too hot to

  104. work. Not a lot could be done

  105. uh uh at that point. And what's Abraham

  106. thinking about? Well, we're not told,

  107. are we?

  108. If we use our imagination, though,

  109. perhaps he's mulling over how

  110. despite the amazing promises God has

  111. given him and Sarah,

  112. she just doesn't seem to be on board.

  113. Sarah's struggling to take in this

  114. latest salvo of pie-in-the-sky promises

  115. that God has given them.

  116. It seems to her

  117. God keeps promising stuff

  118. that doesn't ever happen.

  119. Abraham seems to believe, but his wife,

  120. perhaps understandably,

  121. given everything that's occurred and the

  122. situation they're in, she seems a bit

  123. more cynical.

  124. Now, as any married person will tell

  125. you,

  126. when you're not on the same page as your

  127. wife or your husband,

  128. it's difficult.

  129. Life

  130. is uneasy, and there's a tension in the

  131. air,

  132. and

  133. you know, it's it's just Yeah, it you're

  134. not comfortable. You When when things

  135. are not quite aligned up there.

  136. Maybe, if we're right, Abraham's

  137. thinking these things through. When he

  138. wakes he sees his eyes and there are

  139. these three men. Where did they come

  140. from? They They're just there. They just

  141. appear there.

  142. Now, in that culture, to come that

  143. close, not too close, but to come that

  144. close, that's equivalent to knocking on

  145. the door. They've come to that sort of

  146. vicinity. They are effectively knocking

  147. on the door.

  148. No one saw them come. No one sounded the

  149. alarm. He didn't hear them approach.

  150. Uh perhaps that alerts to him him to the

  151. fact that there's something special

  152. about these visitors. They're They're

  153. just there.

  154. But whatever he understands at this

  155. point is enough to make this

  156. 99-year-old,

  157. this respected local dignitary of a man,

  158. jump up and run.

  159. And then he gets there and he bows all

  160. the way down to the earth. This is

  161. beyond the the natural bow of courtesy.

  162. This is the sign of

  163. utmost respect.

  164. >> [snorts]

  165. >> In that culture, of course, you're

  166. expected to show hospitality.

  167. But Abraham seems to go beyond. A mere

  168. meal, a a mere meal.

  169. He gets Sarah to use the

  170. fine flour. Don't use the Aldi stuff. Go

  171. to M&S. Get the the proper stuff, you

  172. know, that we need the the good stuff

  173. here.

  174. And he asks her to bake enough bread for

  175. a small army. It's not It's not enough

  176. just for three men. It's like for for

  177. everyone.

  178. And then Abraham himself, verse seven,

  179. he again he runs. This is unusual.

  180. Remember, it's the heat of the day. He's

  181. running

  182. to personally choose a tender and good

  183. calf. Not any old calf. He wants to make

  184. sure the best is served. And then he

  185. gets a a young man to do the heavy,

  186. messy work. It would have been a lot of

  187. work to butcher a calf. So, he's good,

  188. he delegates there, but he's got work of

  189. his own. He wants to go and prepare the

  190. the milk and the curds.

  191. Do you see the urgency? He's running

  192. about. He's delegating. He's

  193. instructing. He's directing. This man is

  194. on an urgent mission.

  195. And he serves what's being called a

  196. feast that's almost fit for a king.

  197. The urgency, the extravagance surely

  198. suggests he has at least some inkling of

  199. the nature of his guests at this point.

  200. And he's humble, too.

  201. Verse three.

  202. "If I have found favor in your sight."

  203. Then in verse five, he refers to himself

  204. as your servant. Then in verse eight, he

  205. stands quietly in their presence like a

  206. butler

  207. awaiting his master's command.

  208. The powerful,

  209. rich, respected Abraham recognizes in

  210. this situation he is the servant.

  211. And he doesn't delegate this particular

  212. act of service. He stands there

  213. in their presence.

  214. Perhaps he's not fully aware of whose

  215. presence he's in, maybe he is, but he

  216. certainly seems to have an idea. And so

  217. he's urgent, he's he's humble, he's he's

  218. giving his best. He serves standing

  219. there quietly in the presence

  220. of the Lord.

  221. >> [snorts]

  222. >> Oh, that we

  223. would have hearts that are quick to

  224. humble ourselves.

  225. We're very quick

  226. to

  227. puff ourselves up, aren't we, when

  228. something happens?

  229. >> [sighs and snorts]

  230. >> He's very quick here to humble himself

  231. before the Lord.

  232. Oh, that we

  233. would have hearts that long to run into

  234. the presence

  235. of the Lord, of our rock, our redeemer.

  236. It's the middle of the day, it's hot,

  237. and we know a thing or two about hot

  238. days now, don't we?

  239. But surely if we recognize who our God

  240. is, how wonderful he is, what mercy

  241. there is when we when we meet with him,

  242. when we realize I can stand in the

  243. presence of God.

  244. I can hear him speak in his word.

  245. We can know a special presence as we

  246. meet around the Lord's table like like

  247. we're going to do tonight.

  248. We can enjoy fellowship with his family

  249. when we come together. If we grasp these

  250. things, would we not treasure our times

  251. with him more? Would do not treasure our

  252. times together more?

  253. Will it not be our thrill,

  254. our priority,

  255. our joy, even when it's inconvenient and

  256. it's too hard, it's uncomfortable,

  257. to serve, and to welcome, and to be with

  258. our Lord? Don't you want a heart like

  259. that? This I've got to be there.

  260. I'm not suggesting if medically it's

  261. unwise for you to come out or, you know,

  262. we we have to be sensible about these

  263. things, but if we can,

  264. don't we want to be meeting with the

  265. Lord and his people?

  266. I wonder to what extent we recognized

  267. who we have access to in Christ Jesus.

  268. It's God Almighty, El Shaddai, the Holy

  269. One.

  270. Our Father.

  271. Hospitality

  272. um is important in the Middle East, and

  273. it still is.

  274. And hospitality is important in the New

  275. Testament, too. Jesus and the apostles

  276. relied on the hospitality of other

  277. people. Uh much of early church ministry

  278. was carried out in the homes of of of

  279. people.

  280. In Acts chapter 2, we read that they

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  281. broke bread in daily in their homes.

  282. They were together

  283. as a family.

  284. Obviously, for us in our culture and our

  285. times, it's it's slightly different, and

  286. we have to be flexible, not too rigid

  287. about how we interpret these things, but

  288. it's worth remembering the Bible expects

  289. Christians to be hospitable to one

  290. another.

  291. Hebrews chapter 13, verse 2. Do not

    Hebrews 13:2

  292. neglect to show hos- hospitality to

  293. strangers,

  294. for thereby some have entertained angels

  295. unawares. Perhaps the writer of Hebrews,

  296. when he wrote that, perhaps he has this

  297. very account in his mind.

  298. Hospitality is more than just having

  299. people around for Sunday lunch. It is

  300. that, and that's a good start.

  301. I'm not trying to make people feel

  302. guilty here. I say this as much to

  303. myself as as to everyone else. I say

  304. this for our good, for our instruction

  305. as a church. We are commanded to

  306. practice hospitality

  307. to one another and and to other people

  308. as well.

  309. To welcome people.

  310. To provide for them, to refresh them.

  311. And when we do that, I think we will be

  312. surprised. There is mutual blessing

  313. when we give of ourselves to others.

  314. Remember what Jesus said in the parable

  315. in Matthew 25:40.

    Matthew 25:40

  316. Truly I say to you, as you did it to one

  317. of the least

  318. of these, my brothers,

  319. you did it to me.

  320. You know, I'm sure if if Jesus turned up

  321. to your house, you would do what Abraham

  322. did, wouldn't you? You'd be running

  323. around. Quick, let's get the best stuff

  324. out. Let's get the fine china out. Let's

  325. get out the you know, the good cup of

  326. tea stuff. You know, all that stuff. You

  327. would want to serve something that was

  328. good.

  329. And Jesus says, when you serve even the

  330. least of my people,

  331. you're doing it

  332. for me.

  333. That's challenging, isn't it?

  334. I find that challenging anyway.

  335. I wonder if practicing hospitality is

  336. fallen a little bit off our agenda

  337. cuz life is busy.

  338. Maybe we just need to

  339. bring it up a bit.

  340. Well, I've entitled this point, this

  341. first point, the Lord appears. So,

  342. how do we know it is the Lord?

  343. Well, Moses, who wrote this, gives us a

  344. editorial insight. He says in verse one,

  345. "And the Lord appeared to him." So, we

  346. know whether he knew at that point, not

  347. quite so sure, but it's clear. Uh so,

  348. who who are these three? When I first

  349. read this, I thought maybe there's some

  350. sort of trinitarian thing going on here.

  351. Uh but then we discover in chapter 19:1,

  352. two of them are angels in the form of

  353. men. And then we see from chapter 18:33

  354. that one of them was the Lord. So,

  355. there's probably not any Trinitarian

  356. significance to the three turning up

  357. here. But, all of these three, they've

  358. got a combined mission.

  359. Um so, first needs to help Sarah with

  360. her unbelief. And secondly, as we'll see

  361. next week, the angels are to witness and

  362. to weigh the sin of Sodom. But, as for

  363. the Lord,

  364. this seems to be none other than a

  365. pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus

  366. Christ,

  367. the Son of God,

  368. otherwise known as a theophany.

  369. It's the same idea as when you read

  370. about Isaiah and his great vision in

  371. Isaiah chapter 6. Um who did he see? Did

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  372. he see the invisible God, the spirit God

  373. who we can't see? No. Actually, John

  374. tells us in the gospel, in his gospel

  375. chapter 12 verse 41, "Isaiah said these

  376. things because he saw his" This is

  377. Jesus' glory and spoke of him. The

  378. context there is Jesus, the image of the

  379. invisible God, the invisible made

  380. visible, as we read at the beginning.

  381. And actually, what we discover in this

  382. pre-incarnate appearance of Christ,

  383. there is a concern

  384. for women.

  385. We see that in the New Testament, don't

  386. we? Jesus is gentle with women.

  387. He deals with them gently. Here, he

  388. deals with Sarah gently. We're going to

  389. look at that as we move into the heart

  390. of our passage now, the Lord's a

  391. question, the Lord's question.

  392. I don't know if pudding um was a thing

  393. in the ancient Middle East,

  394. um but dinner has been eaten,

  395. uh presumably enjoyed as well. Mouths

  396. are being dabbed, napkins folded and

  397. placed back on empty plates.

  398. And now it's time to get down to

  399. business.

  400. For whatever reason,

  401. Sarah hasn't shown herself.

  402. Perhaps that was a cultural thing.

  403. Uh it certainly um was against accepted

  404. etiquette for a stranger to refer to the

  405. lady of the house, especially by name.

  406. But, this is what happens.

  407. And the whole point of this part of the

  408. visit is to challenge Sarah, and renew

  409. her faith. So, verse 9, they said uh

  410. they said to Abraham, they mysterious

  411. why they didn't all speak together or

  412. was one you know, it's it's not entirely

  413. clear, is it? But, they spoke to

  414. Abraham, "Where is Sarah,

  415. your wife?"

  416. It seems to be the first time Sarah is

  417. mentioned in the whole episode. So, how

  418. did they know her name?

  419. And yes, Abraham would be well known in

  420. the region.

  421. But, did you notice they used her new

  422. name?

  423. A name she probably only had for a week

  424. or two. It wouldn't have rippled out

  425. yet.

  426. They use her special new name that was

  427. given to her by God.

  428. But, why did the Lord ask this?

  429. Did he really not know where she was?

  430. You know, are we saying he can read her

  431. heart? We see that bit later in the

  432. passage, but he didn't know where she

  433. was.

  434. That that that doesn't make sense.

  435. It's likely he said this

  436. to get her attention.

  437. He has come and for whatever reason,

  438. social convention,

  439. fear,

  440. bitterness, whatever,

  441. she's not there.

  442. So, quite possibly in a slightly louder

  443. than needed tone, they inquire about

  444. where Sarah is.

  445. And of course, that did what was

  446. intended and halfway through verse 10,

  447. she's now listening

  448. at the tent door behind him. The whole

  449. thing's quite comedic, isn't it?

  450. Um, it's a bit like when you play hide

  451. and seek with a young child. You know,

  452. you can see their feet sticking out from

  453. under the curtains, but you play along,

  454. don't you? So, "Where could they be? I

  455. don't know. Where are they? Under here?

  456. Under there?" And you can see exactly

  457. where they are. She's hiding from him,

  458. but the Lord knows she's there.

  459. So, even if she can't come out or she

  460. won't come out to see him, he goes on to

  461. say what she needs to hear.

  462. But perhaps there is more

  463. to this question

  464. than just to get her attention.

  465. The principal of my old theological

  466. college, Jonathan Stevens,

  467. wrote a book on theophanies,

  468. and he writes this. He says, "Whenever

  469. during a theophany the Lord asks this

  470. type of question,

  471. it is never geographical,

  472. always spiritual.

  473. 'Where are you?' The Lord Jesus calls to

  474. Adam in the Garden of Eden.

  475. 'Where have you come from and where are

  476. you going?'

  477. The Lord Jesus asks Hagar by the well in

  478. the desert.

  479. 'Where is your wife, Sarah?' He asks

  480. Abraham here.

  481. Where was Sarah?

  482. Geographically, she's a few feet behind

  483. the Lord.

  484. Where is she spiritually?

  485. Well, perhaps some way off in the

  486. distance, hiding.

  487. It's a helpful question to ask

  488. ourselves, isn't it?

  489. Where

  490. am I?

  491. We can be so busy with our careers,

  492. so busy with our children, with our

  493. hobbies, our responsibilities, our

  494. sports, our plans. We can be so

  495. distracted by our games, our reels, our

  496. social media, our TV shows that we

  497. neglect our walk with the Lord.

  498. And we can keep up appearances. We keep

  499. coming to church and going through the

  500. motions, but perhaps the relationship is

  501. cooling off. And so it's a good question

  502. to think

  503. where am I

  504. in my relationship with the Lord? Where

  505. am I?

  506. Or perhaps life has been so painful

  507. and it's been one stress after another.

  508. It's been one disappointment after

  509. another and you're struggling. You have

  510. faith, at least you think you have

  511. faith,

  512. but it's all a bit confused now.

  513. Maybe you're on your way to losing sight

  514. of the Lord, but you know he never loses

  515. sight of his children.

  516. He's not forgotten about you.

  517. Sarah seems to have given up and become

  518. cynical, but the Lord hasn't given up on

  519. her.

  520. And the Lord speaks her name, he gets

  521. her attention. He doesn't demand that

  522. she be brought out,

  523. like put on some sort of trial.

  524. Uh she's not put on the spot here. He's

  525. going to speak to her, but indirectly

  526. for now.

  527. And you know how sometimes how God deals

  528. with us?

  529. He doesn't have a one-size-fits-all

  530. way of dealing and speaking with his

  531. children. He knows exactly the right way

  532. to reach out, to speak to you. It might

  533. be through some Christian friend.

  534. It might be in the middle of a sermon.

  535. It might be through something completely

  536. un-Christian, like you're listening to

  537. something on the radio and you just know

  538. God is speaking.

  539. The good shepherd goes looking for his

  540. lost sheep,

  541. and that's what we see.

  542. I do wonder as well whether there's a

  543. subtle rebuke for Abraham here. Where is

  544. Sarah?

  545. Your wife. Where Where is she, Abraham?

  546. Huh? Abraham

  547. really impressed upon her all that the

  548. Lord had promised?

  549. Had he taken time to explain,

  550. to listen to her, to reassure her, to to

  551. bring her along with him in this this

  552. great journey of faith?

  553. And husbands,

  554. where is your wife?

  555. Do you know?

  556. Of course, sometimes with the best will

  557. in the world,

  558. husbands or wives fall away.

  559. And all the careful, loving challenge,

  560. and help, and prayer,

  561. they seem to make little difference.

  562. But we should be aware of each other

  563. spiritually.

  564. Do you know where they are, those

  565. closest to you?

  566. Well, Abraham knows where she is

  567. physically. She's in the in the tent. He

  568. may well know where she is spiritually,

  569. too.

  570. But although we can nurture each other

  571. in the faith, it's for God to produce

  572. that faith. We we know we can't make our

  573. loved ones have faith if they don't have

  574. it, can we? We can't generate that as

  575. much as we might want to and love to and

  576. pray about it. We can't make that

  577. miracle happen in them.

  578. That's something God has got to do.

  579. And perhaps that was what was going

  580. through Abraham's mind as he sat in the

  581. heat of the day.

  582. How can I help Sarah believe?

  583. How can I help her? Lord, I can't do

  584. this. Lord, please help Sarah in this in

  585. this struggle she's having. I can't do

  586. it.

  587. Men and women,

  588. are you praying for your other half, if

  589. you've got another half? Are you praying

  590. for your children?

  591. For your parents?

  592. Abraham looks up and there's the three

  593. strangers. And what I've just given you

  594. is a bit of speculation.

  595. But now let's get back to the the the

  596. story. There's there's the three three

  597. strangers. They've been welcomed in,

  598. they've been fed. The Lord is called

  599. Sarah's name. He knows he's got her

  600. undivided attention.

  601. And so he repeats the promise in her

  602. earshot, verse 10. The Lord said, "I

  603. will surely return to you about this

  604. time next year, and Sarah your wife

  605. shall have a son."

  606. And Sarah was listening at the door, the

  607. tent door behind him. Just put in there

  608. just to like make sure we get it. She's

  609. there she's listening. It's quite funny

  610. really, isn't it?

  611. Uh if she'd believed God at this moment,

  612. what joy she would have had.

  613. Years, decades worth of of dreaming, of

  614. hoping, perhaps praying as as promised

  615. to be fulfilled.

  616. But she misses the joy.

  617. Because actually at that moment the

  618. common sense facts speak louder than the

  619. faith.

  620. As verse 11 reminds us, they were old.

  621. And Sarah is postmenopausal.

  622. She couldn't have kids in her prime when

  623. she was young.

  624. And and now she's old and it's just it's

  625. definitely not going to happen now. It's

  626. humanly impossible, isn't it? It's not

  627. going to happen.

  628. And so Sarah's response here is humanly

  629. understandable. It's a response based on

  630. the facts, not on faith. She considers

  631. herself worn out. That's the word she

  632. uses. That's the word used to describe

  633. clothes that were sort of sun-bleached,

  634. threadbare desert clothes. They've been

  635. there that's it's just it's just worn

  636. out. It's it's good for nothing. That's

  637. how she sees herself. That's her.

  638. And as for Abraham, she calls him her

  639. lord. That was a sign of respect and

  640. submission.

  641. But as for Abraham, he was old.

  642. Was she really meant to believe this

  643. idea she's going to have a child at this

  644. point in her life?

  645. I mean, they just it's just bonkers,

  646. isn't it? And so she laughs to herself.

  647. It's not like Abraham's laugh in the

  648. last chapter.

  649. This is an unbelieving laugh.

  650. But she cannot, she will not accept

  651. this.

  652. The years of dashed hopes,

  653. the impossibility of the situation means

  654. she she can't bring herself

  655. to entrust herself

  656. to the Lord. She can't bring herself to

  657. believe what God is saying.

  658. And she's she's bang on really, isn't

  659. she? What's being said is totally

  660. unbelievable.

  661. It could only

  662. ever be possible if God performed a

  663. miracle. That's the only way this is

  664. ever going to happen.

  665. But she can't accept that. And so she

  666. laughs to herself.

  667. But the Lord doesn't leave her in her

  668. unbelief, and so he asks Abraham, "Why

  669. did she laugh?"

  670. And Abraham probably hasn't got an idea

  671. what's going on here. He doesn't know

  672. she's laughed. Perhaps it's starting to

  673. dawn on him that greater things are

  674. going on than just a meal. And he's

  675. actually for this part anyway, he's a

  676. bystander in the drama that's going on.

  677. And before she can stop herself, her

  678. disembodied voice denies it. I I didn't

  679. laugh.

  680. She's blown her cover.

  681. And she's lied to the Lord as well.

  682. So the Lord gently but firmly reaffirms

  683. the truth.

  684. And we need to remember you can't

  685. pretend before God.

  686. Perhaps there's someone here who thinks

  687. God doesn't really know me. He doesn't

  688. know my situation. He doesn't know my

  689. deepest thoughts and my struggles. How

  690. can he possibly know me? And we need to

  691. remember God knows you better than you

  692. know yourself.

  693. He sees you.

  694. So, what happens next?

  695. Does she stay in her unbelief?

  696. Does she stay a cynic?

  697. Laughing at Abraham for his naive trust.

  698. Well, according to Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11:11

  699. verse 11, um we read this, "By faith

  700. Sarah herself received power to conceive

  701. even when she was past the age, since

  702. she considered him faithful

  703. who had promised."

  704. So, she's moved from that place of

  705. unbelief to a place of belief. And it

  706. must have been this encounter with Jesus

  707. that did it. For he confronts her

  708. thoughts and her unbelief.

  709. And and he doesn't say just just try and

  710. have some positive thoughts about this.

  711. He doesn't just say just wish for some

  712. good luck.

  713. Or, you know, you and Abraham just need

  714. to try a bit harder. Come on, you know,

  715. get some romance going.

  716. The Lord points back to his own power

  717. and asks this question in verse 14, "Is

  718. anything too hard for the Lord?"

  719. Is anything too hard for the Lord? You

  720. see, Sarah, it's not about how old you

  721. are.

  722. It's not about how likely this thing is

  723. that's been promised. It's not about if

  724. you can think of a clever way to do to

  725. make this happen. If the Lord has

  726. promised it, then that is that.

  727. Is there anything too hard for the Lord?

  728. By the way, the implied answer is no.

  729. There's nothing that's too hard for the

  730. Lord. Nothing that is beyond the Lord.

  731. And I suggest that meditating

  732. on this little phrase that will be of

  733. great help to those of us who struggle.

  734. Perhaps you think your um

  735. sinful habits,

  736. the ones you've stayed with you for for

  737. many years, your addictions,

  738. your bad personality traits.

  739. Maybe you think they are too hard for

  740. the Lord to help with.

  741. Maybe you think God is able to sanctify

  742. everybody else

  743. except for you.

  744. Maybe you think that your sin alone,

  745. your sin alone is the one thing that

  746. Jesus is unable

  747. to deal with and to pay for.

  748. And he can save everyone else, but when

  749. it comes to me, somehow I just I I just

  750. struggle to believe that. Do you know?

  751. We we can be like that.

  752. Is there anything too hard for the Lord?

  753. Maybe you don't enter into the full joy

  754. of your salvation because you just can't

  755. seem to trust the fact that he has paid

  756. for all of your sin.

  757. And when you stand to praise, you've got

  758. these nagging things in the background

  759. of your mind. Yeah, but I did that. I

  760. did that.

  761. And it's hard to just embrace what he

  762. has done for you.

  763. Will you not believe what he's done for

  764. you?

  765. Or maybe you find yourself, you know,

  766. thinking about this mission

  767. uh

  768. year, and it's really hard to invite

  769. someone. And and and we kind of think,

  770. well, I don't want to invite someone

  771. because A, they might not come. Well,

  772. yeah, they might not come. Well, B, you

  773. think, well well God might not save

  774. them. And yeah, he might not save them,

  775. but do you know what? He can. And he

  776. might.

  777. Of course, we're not called to trust God

  778. for what he hasn't promised.

  779. This isn't blind faith, just trusting in

  780. something random out there. We are

  781. called to take him at his word.

  782. But the gospel does say that he will be

  783. with us, that for all whose faith is in

  784. Jesus, we are new in him. That's what

  785. baptism pictures.

  786. We've died with Christ, we're buried

  787. with him, we've been raised to new life,

  788. we've been washed clean.

  789. I wonder

  790. if you're struggling to believe, is

  791. there anything too hard for the Lord?

  792. Sometimes you might think about the new

  793. heavens

  794. and the new earth,

  795. your eternal life, being with Christ.

  796. And you think, "Oh, it just seems so

  797. bonkers. It seems so out there. Can I

  798. Can I really believe all of that?"

  799. And then we come back to this phrase,

  800. don't we? Is there anything too hard for

  801. the Lord?

  802. In truth, there are many things we don't

  803. know if the Lord will answer or do

  804. something for us. We don't have those

  805. specific promises for if our child or

  806. our spouse will ever come to know the

  807. Lord. We don't know. They might, but we

  808. don't know.

  809. We don't know if he will ever heal us of

  810. that thing. We don't know if he will

  811. protect us against getting cancer. We

  812. don't know if we'll have an easy or a

  813. happy marriage. We don't know if our

  814. great plans and ambitions will ever

  815. succeed. I don't know, but what I do

  816. know is

  817. that if you are in Christ,

  818. God is for you.

  819. And that he will do what it takes to

  820. save and to sanctify you.

  821. He might have to shout at you sometimes

  822. and really get your attention. And there

  823. might be all sorts of things that come

  824. into your life so that he gets your

  825. attention.

  826. Or maybe he will be a lot more subtle in

  827. other times.

  828. And he'll subtly repeat things in your

  829. hearing as you're hiding behind the

  830. tent.

  831. But what we can be assured of is that

  832. there is nothing too hard for the Lord.

  833. So, we're not to trust in our own

  834. strength.

  835. Don't despair because of your difficult

  836. circumstances.

  837. Rather, believe him who has promised he

  838. will save you.

  839. If your faith is in Jesus,

  840. he will save you.

  841. Entrust yourself to him.

  842. You repent, but you're still struggling

  843. with those sins.

  844. Come back to the Lord and entrust

  845. yourself to him. Lord, I I can't do

  846. this. I need your help. Lord, help.

  847. If we don't know, well, sorry, we don't

  848. know

  849. what specific path our journey of faith

  850. will take, but we know who takes it with

  851. us, and we know how it ends. It ends in

  852. overflowing joy with Christ and his

  853. people.

  854. That's the end of your story.

  855. Is anything too hard for the Lord?

  856. Later, as Sarah cradles Isaac in her

  857. hands, no doubt she would remember this

  858. day, a day that was etched on her mind,

  859. the day when everything changed.

  860. Perhaps as she looked back on this, her

  861. cheeks would glow a little bit red as

  862. she remembered how she laughed and tried

  863. to pretend before the Lord.

  864. But then she would smile as she

  865. remembered that also it was the day the

  866. Lord came to her

  867. and rekindled her faith amidst all the

  868. fear and failure.

  869. I wonder if the Lord has been speaking

  870. to you this morning.

  871. Where are you?

  872. Is he calling you back to himself this

  873. morning?

  874. Is this the day you will look back on

  875. and remember, yes, that's the day the

  876. Lord remind reminded me,

  877. is there anything too hard for the Lord?

  878. Let's just be quiet before our Lord for

  879. a moment.
