  1. Today our text is from the book of 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  2. chapter 3. So we continue to work through this

  3. passage, this wonderful passage that Paul speaks

  4. here from chapter 1 through 4 and then we'll

  5. move on to additional ones in chapter 5. But

  6. today we're going to be looking at the nature,

  7. work, and responsibility of the Christian minister.

  8. The nature, the work, and responsibility of the

  9. Christian minister. Our text begins in verse

  10. 5. Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but

  11. ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord

  12. gave to each one? I planted, Apollos watered,

  13. but God gave the increase, so that neither he

  14. who plants is anything. nor he who waters, but

  15. God who gives the increase. Now, he who plants

  16. and he who waters are one, and each one will

  17. receive his own reward according to his own labor,

  18. for we are God's fellow workers. You are God's

  19. field. You are God's building. Let's pray. Father,

  20. we thank you for this passage. We look to you

  21. today to enlighten us on this matter. Give us

  22. great understanding, Lord. Open up this passage

  23. to us. And by the Holy Spirit, would you feed

  24. us with it? Would you speak to our hearts? Would

  25. you show us your ways, Lord? And let us shed

  26. the ways of man. Oh, Lord, we look to you. And

  27. we thank you for the gifts you have given to

  28. us. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen. Before we mine

  29. the riches of this passage, I'd like to ask you

  30. a few questions. In considering the nature, the

  31. work, and the responsibility of the Christian

  32. minister, what should a church's leadership team

  33. or pastor or pastors be like? Let me give you

  34. some ideas or questions. as is sometimes taught,

  35. like a CEO, a chief executive officer of a large

  36. company with lots of programs and lots of things

  37. going on, and he is the chief executive of it.

  38. Or should they be maybe like the head of a marketing

  39. company attempting to market Jesus and sell a

  40. product? You should believe in Jesus because

  41. of what he will do for you kind of thing. It's

  42. to your advantage. Now, it's true that it is

  43. to our advantages, but there are also many difficulties

  44. that come. So is that what it should be like?

  45. Or maybe should the church be led by managers?

  46. Whereas Michael Foster says a view of the pastoral

  47. ministry as overseeing a heavily systemized rule

  48. -focused process. where people are given narrow

  49. goals to fulfill under the close supervision

  50. of the pastor. Instead, what about a dynamic

  51. leader with plenty of charisma and energy and

  52. ideas and with a real strong personality that

  53. just attracts people? Is this the biblical ideal?

  54. Or, kind of similar, but should he be like a

  55. cult leader? where he can say or do no wrong,

  56. and he uses his power and authority to manipulate

  57. people and to get them to do what he wants. And

  58. of course, he gets a following who hang on his

  59. every word as if he is a prophet or an oracle

  60. or a mini -god. Now, as you are probably thinking,

  61. none of the types that I have just described,

  62. none of them are marks of genuine biblical truth.

  63. leadership in his church now it is true that

  64. there are some who are more dynamic than others

  65. and there are things that need to be done and

  66. accomplished but we are not the the leadership

  67. of christ church should not be characterized

  68. in the way that i just asked these questions

  69. and yet how many times are these kinds of models

  70. followed how many churches grew quickly under

  71. one of these kinds of leaders only then to flame

  72. out in a generation or sometimes even less, sometimes

  73. much sooner, especially when public sin and scandal

  74. happen to that dynamic leader. We have seen this

  75. over and over again. The principal words that

  76. define biblical leadership in Christ's church

  77. in the New Testament are these. They are instruments

  78. of God. as overseers or elders and shepherds.

  79. Indeed, the calling and function of the shepherd

  80. of sheep are very similar to the calling and

  81. function of those whom God has placed in leadership

  82. of his church. Even Jesus himself calls himself

  83. the good shepherd who leads his sheep to green

  84. pastures and to still waters, like Psalm 23.

  85. speaks of even god himself is called a shepherd

  86. in psalm 23 the lord is my shepherd i shall not

  87. want even the very word pastor denotes that of

  88. shepherding this morning And when we read Ephesians

  89. 4, my translation or the translation I use, the

  90. New King James, has the word pastors in Ephesians

  91. 4 when it describes the offices. And what Brother

  92. James read said shepherds. Shepherds. The word

  93. pastor and shepherd are pretty much one and the

  94. same. So what are shepherds and overseers or

  95. elders? What are pastors? What are they to do?

  96. That scripture gives several things. that are

  97. very, very clear. They are to, number one, feed

  98. the flock of God. They're to feed the flock of

  99. God. 1 Peter chapter 5 and verse 2. Shepherd

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  100. the flock of God which is among you, serving

  101. as overseers, not by compulsion, but willingly,

  102. not for dishonest... dishonest gain but eagerly

  103. not as being lords over those entrusted to you

  104. but by being examples to the flock he gives three

  105. things that they're not to be and three things

  106. that they are to be they're not to do it by compulsion

  107. they're not to do it for dishonest gain and they're

  108. not to do it as lords over those entrusted to

  109. them but they are to shepherd they are to oversee

  110. they are to do it willingly they're to do it

  111. eagerly and are to be an example to the flock.

  112. That's 1 Peter chapter 5. To the elders in Ephesus,

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  113. Paul tells them in Acts chapter 20 verse 28,

    Acts 20:28

  114. Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all

  115. the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made

  116. you overseers to shepherd the flock of God, the

  117. church of God, whom he purchased with his own

  118. blood. Secondly, they are to read the word, they're

  119. to give the sense of the word, and they're to

  120. apply the word in helping God's people to understand

  121. the reading. We see this in Nehemiah chapter

    Nehemiah 8 chapter mention

  122. 8. When the preaching of the word occurred, they

  123. read the word, they gave the sense of the word,

  124. and they applied the word. They caused them to

  125. understand the meaning. And in so doing, they're

  126. to preach the pure word. 2 Timothy chapter 4

    2 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  127. and verse 2. preach the word, be ready in season

  128. and out of season, convince, rebuke, exhort with

  129. all longsuffering and teaching. And this happens

  130. both in the pulpit and out of it. This is to

  131. be done by all of the elders and overseers of

  132. the congregation, not just the one who stands

  133. in the pulpit every Sunday. Thirdly, they are

  134. to guard against wolves and those who would divide

  135. God's people. Acts 20, verse 29. For I know this,

    Acts 20:29

  136. that after my departure, savage wolves will come

  137. in among you, not sparing the flock, Paul says.

  138. And continuing then in 2 Timothy 4, as I read,

  139. preach the word, be ready in season and out of

  140. season, convince, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering

  141. and teaching. And then he continues, for the

  142. time will come when they will not endure sound

  143. doctrine, but according to their own desires,

  144. because they have... But you, Timothy, be watchful

  145. in all things, endure afflictions, do the work

  146. of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry.

  147. Guard against wolves and those who would divide

  148. against God's people, making sure that they are

  149. fed and that the word is given. Now, this passage

  150. today speaks to us in a number of ways. This

  151. is both a very humbling passage, and it is sobering,

  152. but it is also quite comforting. Because on one

  153. hand, we're going to see that ministers are simply

  154. instruments of God. They're ministered, they're

  155. instruments before a holy God. And this is very,

  156. it's humbling because he says in here, Paul,

  157. the word of God is like, we do not have anything.

  158. We are nothing. In other words, we are his instruments.

  159. But we also see the comforting presence of the

  160. Holy Spirit who works through his instruments

  161. and that he does the work that no man. And thus

  162. it is humbling, but it is also quite comforting.

  163. Remember that the big issue at hand are the divisions

  164. in the congregation at Corinth. There were factions.

  165. There was a neglect of the foundational doctrine

  166. of Jesus Christ crucified. And there was the

  167. elevation of human. reason in the understanding

  168. and practice of the christian faith they said

  169. some said i follow paul as if you're he's the

  170. man of god or i follow apollos he speaks great

  171. words he's a great orator as the scripture bears

  172. witness to it he has such a way with words but

  173. after stating the case against them in their

  174. immaturity paul now speaks to their misunderstanding

  175. of christian ministry Their misunderstanding

  176. of it in this exposition of what Christian ministry

  177. is all about. He exposes the senselessness of

  178. their allegiance to particular Christian leaders

  179. by asking what such individuals are in themselves.

  180. So reads the pillar commentary. So let's dive

  181. into the first portion of this chapter and then

  182. Lord willing we will continue next week. Our

  183. first and our main point today is that ministers

  184. are humble servants in the field of God. Humble

  185. servants in God's field. Who or what is a minister?

  186. Paul begins this discourse on ministers with

  187. a description of what they are. First of all,

  188. we want to take a look at the word minister or

  189. servant, depending on your translation. The word

  190. is diakonos. It's the Greek word. It means a

  191. servant, an attendant, and a waiter. A waiter,

  192. as in a waiter at a restaurant serving food.

  193. This word is used to refer to deacons, to ministers,

  194. and to other servants in the Bible. It is somewhat

  195. contextually defined. Paul describes both himself

  196. and Apollos in this way. Jesus himself is called

  197. by this description in Romans chapter 15 verse

    Romans 15:8

  198. 8. Paul says, now I say that Jesus Christ has

  199. become a servant to the circumcision for the

  200. truth of God to confirm the promises made to

  201. the fathers. Ministers are those who are servants

  202. of Christ who preach and speak the word of God

  203. to others, those to whom God has sent them. While

  204. this word is sometimes used to refer to anyone

  205. who serves, such as Phoebe, a servant of the

  206. church at Centria in Romans chapter 16, the context

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  207. of the passage today in 1 Corinthians 3 refers

  208. to those who are in an office of the church.

  209. Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, elders,

  210. teachers, those listed. in Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 4:11

  211. 4 verse 11 and 12 and he gave himself I'm sorry

  212. and he himself gave some to be apostles some

  213. prophets some evangelists and some pastors and

  214. teachers for the equipping of the saints in the

  215. work of ministry for the edifying of the body

  216. of Christ I think that the ministers or servants

  217. spoken of in 1 Corinthians chapter 3 would also

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  218. include deacons. Now, while we believe that the

  219. gifts and offices of apostle and prophet are

  220. no longer given to men since the word of God

  221. is now revealed and the canon of scripture of

  222. God's revelation is now closed. But evangelists,

  223. pastors, teachers, deacons, yes, they are all

  224. God's ministers. They are God's. servants as

  225. his instruments now the section this section

  226. of the passage speaks in agricultural terms we're

  227. going to see a little bit later lord willing

  228. next week that paul then switches and he speaks

  229. in terms of architecture a great building and

  230. he speaks to that considerably but today the

  231. passage is in agricultural terms in verse 9 he

  232. says you are god's field You as the congregation,

  233. you are God's field. And then it continues, you

  234. are God's building. So we're not going to be

  235. looking at building today, but we're going to

  236. be considering the field. As the ministers of

  237. the Lord, in particular Paul and Apollos, have

  238. labored in the field to sow the seed of God's

  239. word, and they have watered it. This is brought

  240. out very plainly in verse 6. Paul says, I planted,

  241. Apollos watered, and God gave the increase. God

  242. gave the increase. Now Paul is the one who planted

  243. the church. He went to Corinth, recounted in

  244. Acts chapter 18. He began his ministry by attending

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  245. the Jewish synagogue first on every Sabbath.

  246. And he reasoned from the word of God to them,

  247. persuading both Jews and Greeks. Because as was

  248. common in many of the Gentile areas at the synagogue,

  249. there were God -fearers among the Gentiles who

  250. would come and listen to the word of God being

  251. read. By the Jews. So they would come. And so

  252. this mixed multitude could be together in a synagogue,

  253. even though there was a lot more separation at

  254. the temple. But in the synagogues, they would

  255. come and they would listen. So as Paul ministered,

  256. he ministered both to the Jews and the Greeks.

  257. He was accompanied with Silas and Timothy, who

  258. came from Macedonia. But when some of the Jews

  259. opposed him and they blasphemed God, then they

  260. started meeting, guess where? In the house of

  261. justice, whose house was right next to them.

  262. synagogue so the people could come and they could

  263. go there instead of to the synagogue and still

  264. continue to hear paul preach acts 18 verse 8

    Acts 18:8

  265. then crispus the ruler of the synagogue believed

  266. in the lord with all his household and many of

  267. the corinthians hearing believed and were baptized

  268. paul planted the seed and i remind you What kind

  269. of a place that Corinth was. It was a very wicked

  270. and yet cosmopolitan city. There was all sorts

  271. of things going on. One writer describes it as.

  272. There was the seed of God was planted in the

  273. muck and the mud of Corinth. And yet this beautiful

  274. flower was coming up. And yet we know that this

  275. church had a lot of problems. And yet there they

  276. heard the word. They believed and they were baptized.

  277. Well then Paul leaves. And Apollos comes over,

  278. and we know this from Acts 8, verse 27 and 18.

    Acts 8:27

  279. It says, when he desired to cross to Achaia.

  280. The brethren rode, exhorting the disciples to

  281. receive him. The region of Achaia is where Corinth

  282. was. So Apollos comes, and he's referenced here

  283. in 1 Corinthians, and he spent some time there,

  284. and he greatly helped those who had believed

  285. through grace. For he vigorously refuted the

  286. Jews publicly, showing from the scriptures that

  287. Jesus is the Christ. Acts 20, Acts chapter 18.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  288. So Paul plants the seed. Apollos waters it. the

  289. seed with the preaching of the word of God both

  290. of them as servants and ministers of Christ now

  291. Paul then goes on and he says emphatically God

  292. gave the increase he goes on to say a most startling

  293. statement so then neither he who plants is anything

  294. and nor he who waters, but God who gives the

  295. increase. He is saying here that in themselves,

  296. in Paul, in Apollos, in almost a hyperbolic statement,

  297. they are nothing. It is God who gives the increase.

  298. I say somewhat hyperbolic because we know that

  299. Paul had been given certain authority as an apostle.

  300. Titus is told to speak and exhort with all authority

  301. in 1 Timothy 2 verse 15. I'm sorry, Titus 2 verse

    1 Timothy 2:15 Titus 2:15

  302. 15. But the point is that God's ministers as

  303. mere men, they are nothing. They are not anything

  304. is the words. And God does not differentiate

  305. between the one who plants and the one who waters.

  306. Look at verse 7. So then neither he who plants

  307. is anything nor he. And yet, as verse 8 says,

  308. they are one. They are one. They are instruments

  309. in the hand of a mighty God who sends forth the

  310. Holy Spirit to do God's purposes through his

  311. instruments. For after all, can the planter of

  312. seeds make the seed grow? Can a water hose make

  313. the water and perform the miracle that watered

  314. seeds die and resurrect again with new plant

  315. life? Of course not. We know that they cannot

  316. do this. They do not have this power in and of

  317. themselves. And so neither do God's instruments.

  318. We convey God's word, but God gives the increase.

  319. Without the Holy Spirit's work of regeneration,

  320. those who plant and water might as well be planting

  321. rocks. What good would it do to plant rocks?

  322. Children, if you go out and plant a rock, is

  323. it going to give out more rocks? No, it's not

  324. that way. Sometimes it seems like it, though,

  325. because they keep reappearing, right? But no,

  326. rocks don't grow rocks. Plants bring forth life.

  327. And the one who plants cannot bring forth that

  328. life. Consider this further. Who made the soil

  329. that the seed is planted in? Who made the seed

  330. in the first place? who made the water, and who

  331. created the whole process of germination. It

  332. is God, the creator. He is the Lord. And we as

  333. men and women, we can do nothing in bringing

  334. forth that new life. It is God. This life -giving

  335. power of God is spoken of in this wonderful Psalm,

  336. Psalm 65. To the chief musician, a psalm of David,

  337. a song. Praise is awaiting you, O God, in Zion.

  338. And to you the vow shall be performed. O you

  339. who hear prayer, to you all flesh will come.

  340. Iniquities prevail against me. As for our transgressions,

  341. you will provide atonement for them. Blessed

  342. is the man you choose and cause to approach to

  343. you that he may dwell in your courts. We shall

  344. be satisfied with the goodness of your house.

  345. of your holy temple. By awesome deeds and righteousness

  346. you will answer us, O God of our salvation, you

  347. who are the confidence of all the ends of the

  348. earth and of the far off seas. Who establish

  349. the mountains by his strength. Being clothed

  350. with power. You who still the noise of the seas.

  351. The noise of their waves and the tumult of the

  352. peoples. They also who dwell in the farthest

  353. parts are afraid of your signs. You make the

  354. outgoings of the morning and evening rejoice.

  355. You visit the earth and water it. You greatly

  356. enrich it. The river of God is full of water.

  357. You provide their grain for so you have prepared

  358. it. You water its ridges abundantly. You settle

  359. its fronds. You make it soft with showers. You

  360. bless its growth. You crown the year with your

  361. goodness and your paths drip with abundance.

  362. They drop on the pastures of the wilderness and

  363. the little hills rejoice on every side. The pastures

  364. are clothed with flocks. The valleys also are

  365. covered with grain. They shout for joy. They

  366. also sing. It is God, the creator, who causes

  367. all of these wonderful things to happen. And

  368. so Paul's point in all of this is that factions

  369. around men are worthless. They're irresponsible

  370. and they're useless. They elevate men to places

  371. they should not be. To build a movement or a

  372. faction around a man will do nothing but disrupt

  373. and divide. And in the end, those who trusted

  374. in the leaders of those factions will be disillusioned

  375. and disappointed. The efforts of those who were

  376. developing factions and sowing division needed

  377. to be stopped. And so Paul rebukes them. But

  378. in this rebuke, he is also showing the worthlessness

  379. of man without God. The complete inability to

  380. shepherd, to feed. And so why would we create

  381. factions after them? Back in chapter 1, I remind

  382. you, when he first talks about this problem,

  383. he says, Now I plead with you, brethren, by the

  384. name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak

  385. the same thing, and that there be no divisions

  386. among you, but that you be perfectly joined together

  387. in the same mind and the same judgment. For it

  388. has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren,

  389. by those of Chloe's household, that there are

  390. contentions. Among you. Now I say this. That

  391. each of you says. I am of Paul. Or I am of Apollos.

  392. Or I am of Cephas. Or I am of Christ. Is Christ

  393. divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were

  394. you baptized in the name of Paul? Chapter 1.

  395. 10 -13. There may be times. In fact this was

  396. the case here. When the overseers of a congregation.

  397. Need to exhort the congregation. Even warning

  398. them. And making a plea. to stop the division

  399. and the contention. Indeed, when that happens,

  400. they are to take heed for, as Hebrews 13 verse

    Hebrews 13:17

  401. 17 says, those who have been placed as the shepherds

  402. of God's people, watch out for your souls as

  403. those who must give account. As those who must

  404. give account. And so ministers are instruments.

  405. In the hands of God. So don't develop factions

  406. after them. Don't create division and contentions.

  407. Now, let's look then furthermore at the work

  408. of the Holy Spirit. Excuse me. The nature, that

  409. is the work, the responsibility of a farmer,

  410. a husbandman, a vineyard dresser, a laborer in

  411. God's field. a minister, a deacon, or a servant

  412. is to faithfully do the work of soil preparation,

  413. planting, and watering, and trust in God through

  414. the Holy Spirit to bring the growth, to trust

  415. in God through the Holy Spirit to bring the growth.

  416. As I said, this is both humbling And freeing.

  417. It's humbling in that we are only instruments.

  418. But it's freeing in that God, through the power

  419. of the Holy Spirit, works through us to do the

  420. good. And it's all attributable to Him. We are

  421. simply... instruments we cannot give life but

  422. he can and he does we get perplexed we get cast

  423. down we get weary and unable to help people to

  424. change but the holy spirit changes life frees

  425. people from their sins and their bondages and

  426. brings life from the dead that is the work of

  427. the holy spirit The calling of a minister then

  428. is to labor faithfully as God's servant. And

  429. then God will give each one his reward according

  430. to his labor. We find this in verse 8. Now he

  431. who plants and he who waters are one. And each

  432. one will receive his own reward according to

  433. his labor. His own labor. God does not measure

  434. by results. He rewards according. to the labor.

  435. Sometimes there are those who labor for years

  436. and years in a hard field and have little to

  437. show by way of results. But these labors are

  438. not in vain and neither are yours. Though not

  439. ministers in the sense of an office in the church,

  440. parents are also a form of minister. Because

  441. it's hard to raise a family. It's hours and hours

  442. of blood and toil and sweat, of hard decisions

  443. and tender care and discipline and sleepless

  444. nights and discipleship and prayer. And so all

  445. of us, as we serve Christ in and of our own capacity,

  446. in whatever it is that God has given to you,

  447. you need the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish

  448. the work. But yet God remembers your labor, your

  449. labor of love, even as you are a channel of instrument

  450. for the Lord to work in your children, to others

  451. around you. Maybe you're discipling someone else

  452. or to leaders of churches and shepherds and overseers.

  453. In all of this, we must remember that our labor

  454. is not in vain. To all Christian believers. That

  455. wonderful chapter on the resurrection of 1 Corinthians

  456. 15. Paul encourages every believer with these

  457. words. Therefore my beloved brethren. Be steadfast.

  458. Be immovable. Always abounding in the work of

  459. the Lord. Knowing that your labor is not in vain

  460. in the Lord. Your labor is not in vain. There

  461. are times in history where God. enabled shepherds

  462. to lead and and as i said the ground was very

  463. hard it was a very difficult place to minister

  464. and very few were were converted through the

  465. fruit of their ministry but they labored faithfully

  466. and were rewarded by god only then for someone

  467. else to come and maybe even the next generation

  468. and the seed had been that all the ground had

  469. been worked even though it was hard and all of

  470. a sudden the spirit of god moved and great amounts

  471. of people came into Christ's church over a short

  472. amount of time. That wasn't because of the man

  473. who came and watered. It was the work of the

  474. Holy Spirit using both the labor of the man who

  475. planted and the one who watered. And they together

  476. are one in Christ. Do not develop these factions

  477. is what Paul is saying here. Now Paul differentiates

  478. here between the ministers and the congregation

  479. in that ministers are God's fellow workers. He

  480. says, we, verse 9, we are God's fellow workers.

  481. He's referring to their, to Christ's servants.

  482. We are God's fellow workers. You are God's field.

  483. You are God's building. And so to the Corinthians,

  484. these apostles and the others who followed on

  485. after them, They labored and labored before the

  486. Lord, some planting, some watering. And it wasn't

  487. only Paul and Apollos. There were many others

  488. who came after and who continued to work in this

  489. congregation so that they would prosper, which

  490. they did do. They did prosper. They were able

  491. to deal with some of the sin in their midst,

  492. even though they still had issues and problems,

  493. just like pretty much all congregations do, yet

  494. they were able to grow and prosper by the work

  495. of the Holy Spirit in them. And so, he says,

  496. we are laborers together. We are God's fellow

  497. workers. This is an incredible thing, to think

  498. that we... are able, even as mere instruments,

  499. that God works in a unique way with us. But again,

  500. I would remind you that even though the context

  501. here is up to the church, God also works through

  502. you as parents. or as counselors, or to one another

  503. in various ways. God uses you in the gifts that

  504. he has given to you, but it's still the Holy

  505. Spirit that accomplishes good in whatever way

  506. you are an instrument, whatever way it is. Nevertheless,

  507. here, looking at the text and staying with the

  508. text, he says, we are God's fellow workers. You

  509. are God's field. God's servants are instruments,

  510. which brings us back to the beginning. They are

  511. shepherds who feed the flock of God, laboring

  512. together with God, and trusting the Holy Spirit

  513. to do the work of sanctification, that of making

  514. God's people holy. Now, let's apply this in just

  515. two different ways. First of all, as a congregation,

  516. Strive to be of one mind. Over and over in the

  517. scripture it says, be of one mind. And even where

  518. there are some differences, then love, love one

  519. another. 1 Peter 3, verse 8 and 9. Finally, all

    1 Peter 3:8

  520. of you be of one mind, having compassion for

  521. one another. Love as brothers. Be tenderhearted,

  522. be courteous, not returning evil for evil or

  523. reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, wise

  524. blessing, knowing that you were called to this,

  525. that you may inherit a blessing. 1 Peter 3, 8

  526. and 9. And so, yes, we're going to have disagreements,

  527. brothers and sisters. We will. But we can work

  528. through them. And we need to love one another

  529. as brethren, to love one another as being part

  530. of the family of God together, even where we

  531. have disagreements and we seek to be one, to

  532. be united together as much as lies within us.

  533. And so my encouragement and application to you

  534. is do not develop factions, but strive to be

  535. of one mind and even where there are differences,

  536. love, be tenderhearted and courteous. courteous

  537. toward one another secondly use the gifts that

  538. god has given to you because god has given to

  539. each one in the body unique gifts the apostle

  540. paul gives clear instructions on this in romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  541. chapter 12 after we have presented our bodies

  542. as a living sacrifice to god we see ourselves

  543. in a new light. And so he says, for I say through

  544. the grace given to me to everyone who is among

  545. you, not to think of himself more highly than

  546. he ought to think, but to think soberly as God

  547. has dealt to each one a measure of faith. For

  548. as we have many members in one body, but all

  549. the members do not have the same function, so

  550. we being many... Are one body in Christ. And

  551. individually members of one another. Having then

  552. gifts. Differing. According to the grace that

  553. is given to us. Let us use them. If prophecy,

  554. let us prophesy in proportion to our faith. Or

  555. ministry, let us use it in our ministry. He who

  556. teaches, in teaching. He who exhorts, in exhortation.

  557. He who gives, with liberality. He who leads,

  558. with diligence. He who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

  559. Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is

  560. evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affection

  561. to one another with brotherly love. In honor,

  562. giving preference to one another, not lagging

  563. in diligence, fervent in spirit. Serving the

  564. Lord. Rejoicing in hope. Patient in tribulation.

  565. Continuing steadfastly in prayer. Distributing

  566. to the needs of the saints. Given to hospitality.

  567. Now that's quite a list there. And sometimes

  568. our minds kind of glaze over as we look at, as

  569. we just, it kind of all jumbles together. The

  570. fact is that everyone has a gift. We're all instruments

  571. of God. And we need to seek to use the gifts

  572. that God gave us in a way that glorifies Him.

  573. knowing that it's the power of the Holy Spirit,

  574. the grace of God that has given you the gift

  575. and the ability to do it. So it is also with

  576. our ministers and with our leaders. We are called

  577. to be those instruments, but look to the power

  578. of the Holy Spirit. Let's pray. Father, we thank

  579. you that you have called us to yourself. We thank

  580. you that you have given to us these great gifts.

  581. We bless you and we praise you. And we ask for

  582. your blessing on this congregation that we would

  583. be like -minded and that we would walk in your

  584. ways and that we would be overflowing and abounding

  585. in love for one another. And we ask this in Jesus'

  586. name. Amen.
