  1. Today we come to the next passage in the book

  2. of 1st Corinthians as we have been steadily working

  3. our way. We are in chapter 3 verses 9 through

  4. 17. I'd like to speak today on architects and

  5. builders of God's building, the church and the

  6. temple of God. Let's look at our passage here

  7. and read from God's word beginning in verse 9.

  8. For we are God's fellow workers. You are God's

  9. field. You are God's building. According to the

  10. grace of God which was given to me, as a wise

  11. master builder, I have laid the foundation, and

  12. another builds on it. But let each one take heed

  13. how he builds on it. For no other foundation

  14. can anyone lay than that which is laid, which

  15. is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this

  16. foundation with gold, silver, precious stones,

  17. wood, hay, and straw, each one's work will become

  18. clear, for the day will declare it, because it

  19. will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test

  20. each one's work of what sort it is. If anyone's

  21. work which he has built on it endures, he will

  22. receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned,

  23. he will suffer loss, but he himself will be saved,

  24. yet so as through fire. Do you not know that

  25. you are the temple of God and that the Spirit

  26. of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple

  27. of God, God will destroy him, for the temple

  28. of God is holy, which temple you are. Let's pray

  29. and ask for the Lord's blessing on this time.

  30. Father, I pray today, Lord, that you by your

  31. spirit would illuminate this passage and give

  32. us understanding. I pray, Lord, that I might

  33. teach it properly and according to sound doctrine.

  34. I ask, Lord, that you would send forth your spirit.

  35. We look to you and we depend on you, O Lord,

  36. as we consider what you say to the church in

  37. this passage. We ask for your blessing in this

  38. time together. In Christ's name we pray. Amen.

  39. You are God's field. You are God's building.

  40. With these words from Paul the Apostle in verse

  41. 9, there seems to be a shift in metaphor from

  42. that of a field to a building. That is of the

  43. new temple in the New Jerusalem that was prophesied

  44. in the Old Testament and written about in the

  45. New Testament. And yet, is it a shift? Or is

  46. it perhaps even a combination of the two? G .K.

  47. Beal seems to think so and points out that in

  48. the Old Testament, the Garden of Eden, that is

  49. Israel's garden -like promised land, and Israel's

  50. future restoration in a garden -like land, were

  51. either equated or associated together with a

  52. temple. As Peter Lightheart summarizes, the Bible

  53. moves from the Garden of Eden in Genesis where

  54. Adam was to act as a gardener priest, and it

  55. goes to the final city, which represents the

  56. perfection of that garden. Thus, the two metaphors,

  57. that of you are God's field and you are God's

  58. building, are quite tied together. You are both

  59. a field and God's building. Now, the word begins

  60. here with you are, and as you may know, The Greek

  61. language has many more tenses than what English

  62. language does. And so sometimes when you get

  63. into translation of the Bible, it's hard to convey

  64. everything. So this you are is, now get this

  65. straight, second person plural present indicative.

  66. Okay? So let me repeat that. Second person plural

  67. present indicative. Y 'all right now are God's

  68. building. You are God's temple. You are God's

  69. people. You are God's field. This beautiful temple

  70. resides in Zion, that is God's city, which is

  71. a place of worship. Christ's church functioning

  72. as a city set on a hill that brings healing and

  73. life to the nations. The final state then of

  74. all believers is not a return to the primitive

  75. garden, but it is a glorified garden in the city

  76. of the New Jerusalem. This, of course, is contrasted

  77. with what John in Revelation calls the harlot

  78. city. The city of Babylon. This is a destructive

  79. city. It is doomed for damnation. And from which

  80. God's people are called to flee. As he says in

  81. chapter 18 verse 4 of Revelation. Come out of

  82. her, my people, lest you share in her sins and

  83. lest you receive of her plagues. So we see this

  84. huge contrast between the city of man that is

  85. the city that is doomed for destruction, also

  86. called the Babylon or the harlot city. And we

  87. see the city of God, which is also a beautiful

  88. temple. We're going to be speaking a little bit

  89. more about that. Now, it's important to emphasize

  90. this. Because so many Christians have a very

  91. low view of Christ's church, which is the temple

  92. of God. And they think that all that is important

  93. is, like the Josh Turner song, me and God. Just

  94. me and God. Me and God. And as long as I can

  95. worship anywhere, that's all that matters, whether

  96. that's in the field or in the mountains each

  97. weekend or on the beach or in the privacy of

  98. my home where I stream a sermon online. Well,

  99. indeed, you can worship God in prayer everywhere

  100. at any time, and that is a glorious and wonderful

  101. truth. God's church, however, is described in

  102. corporate terms. You all, in other words. As

  103. a building with many stones being built together

  104. into this glorious temple. You all are that building.

  105. Even as Peter describes in chapter 2 verse 4

  106. and 5. Which we read in our responsive reading.

  107. Coming to him as a living stone. Rejected indeed

  108. by men. But chosen by God and precious. You also.

  109. As living stones are being built up together

  110. in a spiritual house, a holy priesthood to offer

  111. up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through

  112. Christ Jesus. This is corporate sacrificial language

  113. or as we call it covenant renewal worship. God

  114. builds us up. God feeds us together from his

  115. word and sacrament. And we, what do we do? Why,

  116. we offer up sacrifices to him. That is, spiritual

  117. sacrifices of prayer, of confession, of consecration.

  118. And thus we together worship our God, our triune

  119. God, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Now Paul

  120. speaks of this building in two senses. The first

  121. sense is, in the church small c catholic that's

  122. the church catholic which means universal this

  123. is not referring to the roman catholic church

  124. it is the church that is it's christ's church

  125. throughout all ages in the past and present and

  126. in all places and we are all built up together

  127. into this glorious building and city that is

  128. built over centuries and even millennia this

  129. is the sense for example in hebrews chapter 12

    Hebrews 12:22

  130. verse 22 But you have come to Mount Zion and

  131. to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem,

  132. to an innumerable company of angels, to the general

  133. assembly and church of the firstborn who are

  134. registered in heaven, to God the judge of all,

  135. to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus

  136. the mediator of the new covenant, and to the

  137. blood of sprinkling that speaks better things

  138. than that of Abel. You have come to this. This

  139. is the grand and glorious edifice of the church

  140. of Jesus Christ. It's a beautiful temple that

  141. is throughout all the time of the ages and is

  142. found throughout the whole world. So that's the

  143. first sense of a building that Paul speaks about.

  144. But the second sense... And this is the one from

  145. the passage today, is that when he is speaking

  146. of a building, he's speaking of an individual

  147. church. He is writing to the church at Corinth,

  148. the Corinthian church. It's what we might call

  149. the church particular. It's the congregation

  150. in Corinth in his time, the one that he founded

  151. as recorded in the book of Acts, chapter 18.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  152. This local congregation is also called a building.

  153. And Paul is the master builder who laid the foundation

  154. for it. So let's move now into the passage here

  155. and look at it and examine it more closely. The

  156. first thing is beginning in verse 10. According

  157. to the grace of God, he says, which was given

  158. to me as a wise master builder, I have laid the

  159. foundation and another builds on it. But let

  160. each one take heed how he builds on it. So our

  161. first point is a skilled and a wise master builder.

  162. Paul says, according to the grace given to me.

  163. That is, Paul, the former persecutor of the Christian

  164. church, was going to far off places in order

  165. to do what? To apprehend, to imprison, and to

  166. call for the execution of Christian believers.

  167. This man was changed by the power of God. He

  168. was converted by the grace and the mercy of God.

  169. Paul describes this. To King Agrippa in Acts

    Acts 26:11

  170. chapter 26, verse 11, he says, I punished them

  171. often in every synagogue. I compelled them to

  172. blaspheme and being exceedingly enraged against

  173. them, I persecuted them even. To foreign cities.

  174. But then he goes on to tell the king. How Jesus

  175. commanded him. After being struck down by the

  176. light. After speaking to him. And calling him.

  177. What does Jesus say to him? He says Paul. Rise

  178. and stand on your feet. Or Saul actually his

  179. name was then. Rise and stand on your feet. For

  180. I have appeared to you for this purpose. To make

  181. you. a minister and a witness both of the things

  182. which you have seen and of the things which I

  183. will yet reveal to you. I will deliver you from

  184. the Jewish people as well as from the Gentiles

  185. to whom I now send you. to open their eyes in

  186. order to turn them from darkness to light and

  187. from the power of Satan to God, that they may

  188. receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance

  189. among those who are sanctified by faith in me.

  190. It's all in Acts chapter 26. God miraculously

    Acts 26 chapter mention

  191. changed this man from being a persecutor to being

  192. the persecuted. He called him to serve him. How?

  193. As a builder of his church. He continues, verse

  194. 19, he says, Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not

  195. disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared

  196. first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem and

  197. throughout all the region of Judea and then to

  198. the Gentiles that they should repent, turn to

  199. God, and do works befitting repentance. This

  200. is the grace given to Paul. And he says, according

  201. to the grace given to me, it is the grace of

  202. the mercy of God toward him in granting him unmerited

  203. favor in sparing his life, giving him a new regenerate

  204. heart and fitting him for a new calling. But

  205. this is also in giving him a grace gift, a grace

  206. gift as an apostle and as a church builder and

  207. planter. Paul is then later sent out by the church

  208. in Antioch with Barnabas and then Silas to travel

  209. throughout Asia and through Europe to evangelize

  210. and to build churches, as he puts it in Romans

  211. 15, 17, in every area where Christ was not named.

  212. This is Paul as a master builder. He writes this.

  213. He's a wise master builder. He has laid the foundation

  214. that others will build on. Now the word master

  215. builder means both a designer and a builder,

  216. an architect and a supervisor in the erection

  217. of the building. Paul was not a novice. He was

  218. one who was skilled in wisdom, and he laid the

  219. foundation of the Corinthian church, as well

  220. as many others. But we're in this passage, in

  221. the book of Corinthians, and this is the sense

  222. of the context, as was his custom in many cities.

  223. How did he begin? Well, he first went into the

  224. Jewish synagogue, and he taught the word of God.

  225. Now, this was a great advantage in one respect,

  226. because synagogues in the Roman Empire taught

  227. out of the scripture, that of the Old Testament.

  228. And many Gentile people who were God -fearers

  229. came there, came to the Jewish synagogues to

  230. hear the word of God. They wanted to hear the

  231. word of God. So they didn't become proselytes,

  232. but they came to hear the word. And so, therefore,

  233. many Gentiles were biblically literate. They

  234. had been hearing God's word. And this gave Paul

  235. an excellent place to begin because as he would

  236. go into the synagogue, he was a visiting rabbi

  237. and he would be asked to read and to give the

  238. sense of the passage, which he readily accepted.

  239. And then he would preach Christ and demonstrating

  240. how to preach Christ out of the Old Testament.

  241. And we can learn a lot from this because the

  242. Old Testament is filled. not just with wonderful

  243. stories, but it speaks of Christ. Even the stories

  244. in the Old Testament that we read, you know,

  245. those children's stories where we think of them,

  246. that, you know, we tell the stories to children

  247. about David and Goliath and about the children

  248. of Israel going through the Red Sea and how God

  249. parted the waters and how God delivered them

  250. from their enemies so many times. You know, for

  251. example, the one where, you know, enemy to the

  252. people of God is so worn out and he's so tired

  253. and so he comes into the tent of this woman and

  254. he asks for milk and for bread and a place to

  255. lie down and so he does. She gives him something

  256. to eat and he lays down and what does she do?

  257. She picks up one of those big tent pegs and drives

  258. it through his head and kills this commander

  259. against the people of God. Well, these are not

  260. just stories. but rather they illustrate christ

  261. in many ways so for example noah and the ark

  262. noah and the ark is being saved from the waters

  263. of destruction just as we are saved by christ

  264. and we're made a member of the covenant by baptism

  265. i told you that just told you the story of jail

  266. the crushing of the head of the captain of the

  267. army what does that prefigure it prefigures christ

  268. crushing the head of the serpent which was which

  269. promise was given to Eve. And notice when you

  270. read through the Testament, how many times it

  271. speaks of the crushing of the head of the enemies

  272. of God. This is all pointing to Christ who would

  273. do this to the evil one, to Satan. And then there's

  274. also David. He's slaying the giant Goliath with

  275. a stone from the sling and then cutting off his

  276. head again, showing the same thing. So Paul would

  277. preach the Old Testament and he would point to

  278. Christ. Then when the Jews would cast him out

  279. of the synagogue, he would take those who were

  280. converted to Christ, both Jews and Greeks and

  281. all the other Gentiles, and he would begin a

  282. local Christian church. He would ordain elders,

  283. establish church order, and then he'd move on

  284. to another place and he'd do it all over again.

  285. That was what God had given him to do. And that

  286. is exactly what happened at Corinth. What I just

  287. described to you happened in the synagogue. When

  288. they threw him out, they then started meeting

  289. as the Christian church right beside the synagogue

  290. in the house of one named Justice. He then later,

  291. after he would move on to another place, he would

  292. send others in to help the church to grow and

  293. to mature. These are what he describes as building

  294. on his foundation. They would water the plants.

  295. They would lay the stones of the building. This

  296. is, for example, what Apollos did at Corinth.

  297. It's what Timothy did, what Titus did, and there

  298. were many others. They would both work with Paul,

  299. and then they would also be sent to other places

  300. to serve for a time. And then Paul gives this

  301. admonishment. He says, but let each one take

  302. heed how he builds on this foundation. He says,

  303. I have laid the foundation. I am a wise master

  304. builder. Others will build on this foundation,

  305. but let each one take heed how he builds on it.

  306. Every congregation is either being built up or

  307. being torn down. And so this is an admonition

  308. to ministers of God that they must take heed

  309. on how they build Christ's church. Careful thought

  310. and prayer. and consideration on how the structure

  311. is to be built and to be maintained so that each

  312. local body will last for many generations. This

  313. is why we here at this church, we're a little

  314. over two years old, Grace Reformed Church of

  315. Weezer. We must be thinking and praying about

  316. this in the congregation. How do we build it

  317. well on the foundation that is laid so that it

  318. continues on in the faith? and doctrine of our

  319. Lord Jesus Christ, not only in our lifetime,

  320. but in the lifetime of our children and our grandchildren

  321. and our great -great -grandchildren, and hopefully

  322. for hundreds of years. So Paul's going to develop

  323. this theme a little bit further in the next verses.

  324. He's going to describe the building, that it

  325. needs to be built with living stones. And these

  326. stones should be gold, silver, and precious stones

  327. that will endure, and not ones that are made

  328. out of wood or hay or straw, which will not endure.

  329. Then he moves on in verse 11, he says, For no

  330. other foundation can anyone lay than that which

  331. is laid. which is Jesus Christ. So in the first

  332. place here, he says, I'm laying a foundation,

  333. but he says, there is no other foundation other

  334. than Jesus Christ, the one that is already laid.

  335. So I think what he's doing is not just a play

  336. on words. What he's saying is, when I go into

  337. a new city, I lay the foundation, that is, I

  338. preach Christ. I begin with Jesus Christ and

  339. him crucified. That must be the basis of any

  340. church of Jesus. It must be. If it's anything

  341. else, it won't turn out right. In order for a

  342. building to endure the test of storms, of time,

  343. and the winds of adversity and persecution, the

  344. building must be built on a right foundation.

  345. This is the principal rule of architecture. If

  346. the foundation is wrong, the whole building will

  347. not turn out right. It must be strong. The foundation

  348. must be strong. It must be correct in size relative

  349. to the size and the shape of the building being

  350. built on it. That foundation, he says, is Jesus

  351. Christ and him crucified. The true church of

  352. God can never deviate from or lose their tenacity

  353. to the solid doctrines of the faith, which must

  354. be that of Jesus. That of his birth of a virgin,

  355. his sinless life, his death upon the cross as

  356. atonement for man's sin and his resurrection

  357. from the dead and his ascension to the right

  358. hand of the Father where he rules and reigns

  359. over all. foundation must be there it must be

  360. firm it must be laid for these are crucial doctrines

  361. and teachings they cannot be abandoned nor can

  362. they be changed now jesus said and he promised

  363. that he would build his church we know that he

  364. is the foundation but he also says that he would

  365. build his church We see Jesus saying this in

  366. Matthew chapter 16, verses 18 to 19. He says,

    Matthew 16:18–19

  367. I also say to you that you are Peter, and on

  368. this rock I will build my church, and the gates

  369. of Hades shall not prevail against it. I will

  370. give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and

  371. whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven,

  372. and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed

  373. in heaven. Now this is the fulfillment of two

  374. prophecies, two or more, in the Old Testament.

  375. That spoke about this in chapter 28 verse 16.

  376. Said behold I lay in Zion. A foundation. A stone.

  377. A tried stone. A precious cornerstone. A sure

  378. foundation. Zechariah also prophesied of it in

  379. chapter 6 verse 12. Thus says the Lord of hosts

  380. saying. Behold the man whose name is the branch.

  381. From his place he shall branch out. And he shall

  382. build the temple of the Lord. Yes, he shall build

  383. the temple of the Lord. He shall bear the glory

  384. and he shall sit and rule on his throne. So he

  385. shall be a priest on his throne and the council

  386. of peace shall be between them both. Jesus is

  387. the foundation and Jesus is the builder. He will

  388. build his church. But how does Jesus do this?

  389. Well, he does it with gifted people that he calls.

  390. to do the building in each day and time. And

  391. that is what Paul was saying here. He said, I

  392. am a wise master builder. In other words, I've

  393. been commissioned by Christ to build his church,

  394. and I need to do it well. I need to do it with

  395. wisdom. So also for us, while the foundation

  396. is already laid, yet we as ministers must also

  397. lay the right foundation and build on it in the

  398. local church. We cannot simply claim to be a

  399. member of the church universal without being

  400. attached to and members of a local congregation,

  401. a place with elders and ministers of God, a place

  402. where we put love into action, we love one another,

  403. and we worship God together rightly. Paul said

  404. he did this in Corinth as a wise master builder,

  405. as God's minister and his servant. Throughout

  406. all time, this must be done by making sure that

  407. the church is started in the right way and by

  408. preaching and emphasizing and teaching the supremacy

  409. of Christ and of his great work, his position

  410. and his glory based upon the word of God. I have

  411. seen churches start. over other various common

  412. beliefs. And it might just be something that

  413. is in vogue at a particular time. Back in the

  414. day, when there was a real strong push for homeschooling,

  415. churches would start because, what did they have

  416. in common? It wasn't a lot of doctrine. It was

  417. because they were homeschoolers and they wanted

  418. to visit together with other like -minded homeschoolers.

  419. They wanted to have a church together. And it

  420. didn't work out very well because the foundation

  421. that was laid was not right. Or there are others.

  422. where churches start because of hurts and wounds

  423. from a previous experience, so they want to create

  424. a space where people can commiserate together

  425. and share together in the hurts that they've

  426. had, and then they try to call it a church. Again,

  427. there's great blessing of being able to get support

  428. from other people, but that's not the reason

  429. for a church. It needs to be founded on Christ

  430. and the worship of Him. With his word as the

  431. rule and guided by his spirit. It cannot just

  432. be the fact that we have some particular common

  433. interests. Everyone must have the right and the

  434. proper foundation. And we must take heed to this

  435. and not cheat. In the foundation. Or use inferior

  436. materials. And this brings us to the next point.

  437. The kind of material. That is used to build.

  438. So Paul goes on and he speaks to this. Again

  439. using metaphors. In verse 12. Now if anyone builds

  440. on this foundation. With gold. Silver. Precious

  441. stones. Wood. Hay. And straw. Each one's work

  442. will become clear. For the day will declare it

  443. because it will be revealed by fire. And the

  444. fire will test each one's work of what sort it

  445. is. If anyone's work which he has built on it

  446. endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone's

  447. work is burned, he will suffer loss. But he himself

  448. will be saved, yet so as through fire. Now this

  449. is a metaphor that requires... A little bit of

  450. digging, because what is this all speaking about?

  451. What's the gold, the silver, what's the hay,

  452. the straw? What is this fire that is spoken of

  453. here? Is this speaking of some type of purgatory

  454. as taught by the Roman Catholic Church? Indeed,

  455. they pointed to this, but I don't think... that

  456. that interpretation is correct. So let's look

  457. at it further and see if we can understand what

  458. Paul is saying in this passage. Well, first of

  459. all, it's obvious that the metaphors are not

  460. referring to actual gold or silver or precious

  461. stones or of wood, hay, and straw. Paul might

  462. have been thinking of the beautiful and costly

  463. stones of the temple in Jerusalem. They were

  464. resplendent with gold and silver, and there were

  465. also many precious stones. But he is not describing

  466. a cathedral or a physical temple because he says,

  467. you all are God's building. You all are. So he's

  468. not describing erecting an actual physical building

  469. made out of stone or gold or silver. or of wood,

  470. hay, and straw. They represent something. So

  471. what is it that they represent? Well, the reference

  472. in the next verse is each one's work. Each one's

  473. work will become clear. So which work is this?

  474. In the context, it is not the Corinthians themselves

  475. who are under scrutiny right here, but it's rather

  476. the work of those who have led them. Or those

  477. who have built them. In other words, it's their

  478. leaders. It's those who are ministering to them

  479. and guiding them. It's referring to their teachers

  480. and their teaching and the doctrine and the works

  481. that result from the teaching. Those who were

  482. building on the foundation. Let me say that again.

  483. It must refer to the teachers and their teachings

  484. and the doctrine followed by the works that came

  485. from that teaching. Gold and silver and precious

  486. stones, they are the teaching that builds up

  487. the church. It is sound doctrine that edifies

  488. the hearers and motivates them to do good deeds

  489. that glorify Christ. And wood, hay, and stubble

  490. or straw, that is doctrine that is wrong. It

  491. is in error and it brings forth bad works. Many

  492. times when Paul extols the grace that has been

  493. given to us in Christ and the forgiveness of

  494. our sins through the blood of Christ, he then

  495. immediately shows how the good works must follow

  496. that. We are not saved by our good works, but

  497. they must follow. They must follow. And he emphasizes

  498. that in a whole number of passages. And I'm not

  499. going to read them for the sake of time. But

  500. Ephesians 2 verse 10 and Philippians 2 verse

    Ephesians 2:10 Philippians 2:13

  501. 13 and Titus 2 verse 14 and chapter 3, 8 and

    Titus 2:14

  502. 14. This is the teaching as Paul says in 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 6:3

  503. 6 verse 3. It is wholesome. It accords with the

  504. words of our Lord Jesus Christ and doctrine that

  505. accords with godliness. All ministers then are

  506. called to teach and preach, to build the congregation

  507. in such a way so that the church of God is built,

  508. God's people are edified, and they are sanctified

  509. through the word, and their lives are changed

  510. as they put what they are taught into practice.

  511. This is what needs to happen in the preaching

  512. of the word. It refers to putting off the old

  513. man and the sins of the flesh and spirit, but

  514. also the active obedience to Christ in putting

  515. on the new man and seeing the fruits of the spirit

  516. blossom and grow. And then God's people take

  517. dominion on the earth as God's people and as

  518. his instruments of mercy and of grace and of

  519. love and of building in a way throughout all

  520. of time. He then says, every man's work will

  521. become clear on the day of Christ. Now, this

  522. day can certainly only mean, in my opinion, the

  523. day of our Lord Jesus Christ. It's found in chapter

  524. 1, verse 8 of 1 Corinthians. This day would especially

  525. make manifest the counsels of the heart. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 4:5

  526. 4, verse 5. It is a day when God will judge the

  527. secrets of men. Romans chapter 2, verse 16. and

    Romans 2:16

  528. he will make all men manifest before the judgment

  529. seat of Christ. 2 Corinthians 4 and verse 10.

  530. Again, the immediate context is that of ministers,

  531. those who are building the church, and they stand

  532. before Christ. even though there is application

  533. to everyone. But as each minister stands before

  534. Christ, his work becomes clear. It becomes manifest

  535. and evident. For as Paul says, the day will declare

  536. it because it will be revealed by fire. And that

  537. fire will test each one's work of what sort it

  538. is. Is this speaking of a real fire, of actually

  539. flames that come out? Or is it a fire that reveals

  540. and tests the work that is done? So what is this

  541. fire that Paul speaks of? Now some think that

  542. it's the fire of judgment. Referred to in 2 Thessalonians

    2 Thessalonians 1:7

  543. 1 verse 7. It's when the Lord Jesus is revealed

  544. from heaven with his mighty angels. In flaming

  545. fire taking vengeance on those who do not know

  546. God. And on those who do not obey the gospel

  547. of our Lord Jesus Christ. Is that the fire that

  548. Paul is speaking of? I think not. Because the

  549. language here is not speaking of the fire of

  550. damnation. Judgment as in destruction. It is

  551. not referring to the fire of hell. But this is

  552. a probing fire. A fire that reveals. It reveals.

  553. Perhaps a better explanation is found in the

  554. beginning of Revelation where John sees Christ.

  555. And he describes them this way in Revelation

    Revelation 1:14

  556. 1 verse 14. He says of Jesus, his head and hair

  557. were white like wool, as white as snow, and his

  558. eyes like a flame of fire. Like a flame of fire.

  559. When Joss saw him, he fell to his feet as one

  560. who was dead. So awesome and terrifying was this

  561. sight. And so what happens to us when we stand

  562. before Christ and he turns his eyes as a flame

  563. of fire upon us and everything. is revealed every

  564. thought every teaching every doctrine every work

  565. and those works and teachings that built the

  566. temple of christ and the edified christ people

  567. those will remain those are the ones that sound

  568. biblical truth those are the ones that will remain

  569. as gold and as silver and as precious stones

  570. But the ones that were wrong doctrines, the teachings

  571. that were built on man's wisdom and on human

  572. philosophy, doctrine that does not accord with

  573. sound doctrine, those burn up and the minister

  574. suffers loss. The loss of reward, he sees his

  575. works vanish, burnt up like a fire devours wood

  576. and hay and straw. This is very sobering. The

  577. Pillar of Commentary says, and I quote, Building

  578. materials that will be burned up are those in

  579. keeping with human wisdom instead of the wisdom

  580. of God, which is the fullness of the message

  581. of the cross. Remember the context here. The

  582. context is that some of the Corinthian teachers

  583. did not want to preach Christ crucified. They

  584. did not want the simple truths of the gospel,

  585. but rather they wanted men's wisdom, human philosophy.

  586. And Paul here is saying that's the kind of work

  587. that when revealed before Christ is going to

  588. burn up like wood and hay and straw. But here's

  589. the astonishing thing, though. If the foundation

  590. is right, that of Jesus and him crucified, the

  591. person who was doing that teaching is still saved

  592. through that fire. It says he will suffer loss

  593. yet. He himself will be saved, yet so as through

  594. fire. So this passage, I think, then, describes

  595. three different types of ministers, of those

  596. who are giving the word of God and attempting

  597. to build the church. There are those, number

  598. one, who are faithful. They build upon the foundation

  599. with right doctrine and with right practice,

  600. and they receive the reward. of their labors

  601. now there are a whole number of rewards that

  602. are talked about in the scripture that we might

  603. look at in a brief moment the second one then

  604. is the carnal or the immature and somewhat unfaithful

  605. minister they still have the foundation right

  606. but they have many other things wrong they still

  607. believe in jesus they preach salvation through

  608. christ but they have many other things that are

  609. wrong and those wrong teachings have many bad

  610. effects. These are still saved so as through

  611. fire but they lose rewards. I can think of a

  612. number of examples of these. and obviously I'm

  613. not going to spend much time on this, but I think

  614. of those who would preach salvation by grace

  615. through faith, but they also teach what we call

  616. easy believism. That is, your life doesn't need

  617. to change. You just need to confess Christ. Just

  618. pray the prayer. Pray the sinner's prayer, then

  619. it doesn't matter what you do from then on, you're

  620. going to be saved. You're going to be saved eternally.

  621. That's a wrong doctrine. It does great injury,

  622. and yet, in so doing it, They believe in salvation

  623. by grace through faith, and they preach Jesus

  624. Christ and then crucified. It's a wrong doctrine,

  625. even though they have the foundation right. We

  626. see the same thing. That also, by the way, is

  627. called no lordship salvation. In other words,

  628. Jesus could be your savior, but not your lord.

  629. Huge problems with that theology, and it has

  630. wreaked much havoc in Christ's church. They may

  631. be saved. Think of the Corinthians who were elevating

  632. human philosophy and reason. I think that some

  633. of the teachings of dispensationalism fall into

  634. this category. All of these wrong doctrines have

  635. very real effects. We cannot minimize that. And

  636. yet, because they are true believers in Christ,

  637. they will be saved. That is my understanding

  638. of what this passage is teaching. But then, there

  639. is a third category. And that is those who do

  640. not get the foundation right. They do not get

  641. the foundation right. They are destroyers who

  642. defile God's temple. And we're going to jump

  643. ahead and look at verse 17. If anyone defiles

  644. the temple of God, God will destroy him. These

  645. are those who undermine the authority of God's

  646. word and who deny the very basics of Christian

  647. faith and doctrine. The doctrines and teachings

  648. that we confess each Lord's Day in our confession

  649. in the summary of the apostles of the Nicene

  650. Creed. The word is the same. As they destroy

  651. the temple of God, God will destroy them. As

  652. they defile the temple, God will defile them.

  653. It's the same word used there of these. And we

  654. can think of a number of examples of these. I'll

  655. simply give just a couple. We can think, for

  656. example, of which we tend not to think of this,

  657. but Islam really is a Christian heresy. Because

  658. what did Muhammad do? He said, oh, I believe

  659. in Jesus, but it's Jesus in this kind of a way.

  660. And by the way, there's a greater prophet. And

  661. so by it, he completely undermines the teachings

  662. of Jesus, even while he says they're good. And

  663. yet he denies the Trinity. He denies the essence

  664. of Christian faith. And he believes in jihad,

  665. a holy war against all the infidels who are also

  666. Christians, by the way. And so, you know, we

  667. just see him. What happens to him? God will destroy

  668. him and all those who teach. doctrines like that.

  669. These are works -based religions. I could think

  670. of Charles Russell, who founded the Watchtower

  671. Society, also known as Jehovah's Witnesses. I

  672. could think of Talmudic Judaism, those who reject

  673. Christ in that way. These are works -based religions.

  674. They are damnable heresies that lead people astray

  675. and into perdition, and they are an affront to

  676. Christ. Those, they are defiling the temple of

  677. God and God will destroy them. They will suffer

  678. destruction. Note, unless you think my words

  679. are too strong, think of what Paul said in the

  680. book of Galatians chapter 1. He said that those

    Galatians 1 chapter mention

  681. who preach another gospel are accursed by God

  682. for doing so. Verse 8 of Galatians 1. or an angel

  683. from heaven preach any other gospel to you than

  684. that which we have preached to you, let him be

  685. accursed. And then he states it again for further

  686. emphasis. As well those who have taken away or

  687. added to the word of God, which is expressly

  688. forbidden in Revelation 22, verse 18 and 19.

    Revelation 22:18

  689. And so these are great warnings to us. There's

  690. the faithful. building on the foundation. There

  691. are the carnal or the somewhat unfaithful or

  692. the immature. They have the foundation right,

  693. but many others wrong. And then there are those

  694. who don't even have the foundation right, and

  695. they are destroyers who defile God's temple and

  696. experience the judgment of damnation from God.

  697. Well... Let's close this up as we look at this

  698. passage here. I'm not going to be able to spend

  699. much time today on verse 16 and 17. Lord willing,

  700. I'll do that in the next sermon. But I still,

  701. though, would like to remind you all that you,

  702. as the people of God, you are called by his name

  703. and you are the temple of God. He says this so

  704. clearly. You, you all. Again, the same type of

  705. you plural here. You are the temple of God and

  706. the spirit of God dwells in you. The temple of

  707. God is holy, which temple you are. Paul is here

  708. depicting the Corinthians and indeed all Christian

  709. churches as part of the end time temple which

  710. was prophesied in Malachi chapter 1 verse 11.

    Malachi 1:11

  711. From the rising of the sun to its going down,

  712. my name shall be great among the Gentiles. In

  713. every place incense shall be offered to my name

  714. and a pure offering, for my name shall be great

  715. among the nations, says the Lord of hosts. This

  716. is the temple described in the latter part of

  717. the book of Ezekiel where the waters flow out

  718. from underneath the threshold of the temple toward

  719. the east and those waters bring healing to the

  720. nations and along the banks of the river will

  721. grow all kinds of fruit used for food fruit bearing

  722. trees all year long because their water flows

  723. from the sanctuary this is the spiritual temple

  724. of God and you all as Christian As a Christian

  725. church, you are part of this temple. You are

  726. living stones, Peter says. You are being built

  727. up together in him. You have a glorious and a

  728. wonderful inheritance. And those who teach and

  729. preach in this temple of God must make sure that

  730. they teach and build up the congregation with

  731. the wisdom of God and not the foolishness of

  732. men and man's wisdom. Now, the congregation,

  733. you all, you have a part to play in this as you

  734. are the ones who affirm the calling and the qualification

  735. of your ministers. Paul warns Timothy of the

  736. time when those in the congregation will not

  737. hear because they will not endure sound doctrine,

  738. but according to their own desires, because they

  739. have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves

  740. teachers and they will turn their ears away from

  741. the truth and be turned aside to fables. So whereas

  742. ministers are called to preach the pure word

  743. of God, the congregation is also called. to have

  744. pure hearts that desire the truth of God and

  745. not fables, idle tales, and false doctrine. So

  746. this is also laid on us all. So take this seriously.

  747. You all are the temple of God. The Spirit of

  748. God dwells in you, and this temple is yours.

  749. Like Peter says in 1 Peter 1 .15, as he who called

  750. you is holy, so also be holy in all your conduct

  751. because it is written, be holy for I am holy.

  752. Finally then in the last application, faithfulness

  753. to Christ brings reward. It brings reward on

  754. the day of Christ. Now this is not just speaking

  755. of the eternal state. of enjoying the glories

  756. of heaven with Christ. It is that indeed, but

  757. there is also rewards that are given. Here are

  758. some of them. 1 Peter 5, verse 4. When the chief

    1 Peter 5:4

  759. shepherd appears, you will receive the crown

  760. of glory. That does not fade away. So there's

  761. a crown of glory that's a reward. Matthew 10

    Matthew 10:42

  762. verse 42. Whoever gives one of the little ones

  763. only a cup of cold water in the name of disciple.

  764. Assuredly I say to you he shall by no means lose

  765. his reward. The rewards given even just sent

  766. for simple acts of service. So simple as giving

  767. a cup of cold water. Then there's Matthew 24,

    Matthew 24:45

  768. verse 45. Who then is a faithful and a wise servant,

  769. whom his master made ruler over his household

  770. to give them food in due season? Blessed is that

  771. servant whom his master, when he comes, will

  772. find so doing. Assuredly, I say to you, he will

  773. make him ruler over all his goods. I don't understand

  774. what all that's going to be in the future state,

  775. but there it is from Jesus himself. And then

  776. there's Revelation 2 in verse 7. He who has an

  777. ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the

  778. churches. To him who overcomes, I will give to

  779. eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst

  780. of the paradise of God. And then again in Revelation

    Revelation 2:10

  781. 2 verse 10, be faithful unto death and I will

  782. give you the crown of life. These are some of

  783. the rewards for God's people. And so to you as

  784. individuals, to parents, as you work with your

  785. children, to all others, as you minister Christ

  786. to those who are around you, God will bless you

  787. with rewards. Plus you have eternal life on top

  788. of it all. And isn't that glorious? For you all

  789. are the temple of God. Let's pray.
