  13. Today's scripture is John

    John 14:16–17

  14. 14:16-17. And I will ask the father and

  15. he will give you another advocate to

  16. help you and be with you forever. The

  17. spirit of truth. The world cannot accept

  18. him because it neither sees him nor

  19. knows him. But you know him for he lives

  20. with you and will be in you. Hear what

  21. the spirit is saying to the church.

  22. Thanks be to God. Thanks so much. Well,

  23. good morning everyone.

  24. This weekend, I'm excited to kick off a

  25. new sermon series that is called

  26. Spirited. And during this sermon series,

  27. we're going to be looking at the work of

  28. the Holy Spirit in our lives, in the

  29. church, and in the world. Now, as I was

  30. working on the sermon series, I thought

  31. it would be good to ask a few people

  32. what how they would define the Holy

  33. Spirit. What do they think of when

  34. someone asked them who the Holy Spirit

  35. is? And I got a lot of pretty cool

  36. answers. For some people, uh the answer

  37. was something mysterious like a a

  38. glowing presence or a rushing wind or a

  39. warm feeling that's unexplainable during

  40. worship. For others, the Holy Spirit

  41. seemed like this abstract idea, right? A

  42. distant power that they didn't

  43. completely understand. For others, they

  44. said the Holy Spirit they look at as

  45. like a friend, someone that they could

  46. talk to when they were trying to figure

  47. out what the next step they should take

  48. in their life was. And some people

  49. actually said the Holy Spirit's kind of

  50. like uh Jiminy Cricut from Pinocchio,

  51. you know, like the little thing sitting

  52. on your shoulder telling you what you

  53. should or should not do. As you can

  54. tell, there's lots of different answers

  55. or ideas about the Holy Spirit. Maybe

  56. even a little bit of confusion about the

  57. Holy Spirit. Well, our passage today

  58. from John 14, Jesus hopefully helps

  59. clear up some of that confusion because

  60. he doesn't talk about the Holy Spirit as

  61. being an it. He calls the Holy Spirit an

  62. advocate, a helper, a comforter, a

  63. teacher sent by the father at Jesus's

  64. own request to live with us and in us

  65. forever. So, who is the Holy Spirit?

  66. Well, first and foremost, the Holy

  67. Spirit is not just some uh force out

  68. there. It's not like electricity. It's

  69. not some magical energy. The spirit

  70. thinks and feels and speaks and acts.

  71. The spirit loves and guides and helps

  72. lead us. The spirit is part of the

  73. trinity, right? Father, son, and holy

  74. spirit. That means the holy spirit is

  75. fully God. Just like God the father is

  76. with us. And just like Jesus walked

  77. among us, the Holy Spirit is God in us,

  78. present and active and personal. In the

  79. United Methodist tradition, we fully

  80. embrace this idea that the Holy Spirit

  81. is present and active and personal. In

  82. fact, John Wesley, the founder of

  83. Methodism, taught that the Holy Spirit

  84. is the active presence of God working in

  85. our lives from beginning to end. And

  86. Wesley described the spirit in three

  87. powerful ways. He said, 'The spirit is

  88. at work in our lives even before we know

  89. it. Drawing us toward God, prepping our

  90. hearts to respond to God's love. He also

  91. said, "The spirit assures us of God's

  92. forgiveness once we accept Christ,

  93. giving us peace with God and confidence

  94. that we are accepted and made right with

  95. God through Jesus." And then the spirit

  96. continues to work in us, shaping us to

  97. become more like Jesus every single day,

  98. empowering us to love God and love

  99. others more deeply. Wesley believed that

  100. the Holy Spirit wasn't just a doctrine

  101. to be studied, but a living presence to

  102. be experienced in our own lives. The

  103. spirit warms our heart, stirs us to

  104. action, comforts us in sorrow, convicts

  105. us when we sin and mess up, and empowers

  106. us to live holy lives. So as we begin

  107. this new journey of understanding that

  108. the Holy Spirit is actually a living

  109. presence that we are supposed to

  110. experience, our goal is to not just

  111. learn about the Holy Spirit with our

  112. head, but to know the Holy Spirit in our

  113. hearts. The spirit is not far away. The

  114. spirit isn't waiting for us to become

  115. perfect before showing up in our lives.

  116. The spirit is already near to us whether

  117. we realize it or not. The Spirit is our

  118. guide when we're unsure, our strength

  119. when we're weak, our comfort when we're

  120. hurting. The Holy Spirit is God with us

  121. and in us and for us. And in the words

  122. of Wesley, may our hearts be strangely

  123. warmed by the Holy Spirit's presence in

  124. our lives, especially when it's 44

  125. degrees outside on June 1st.

  126. You see, when we walk with the Holy

  127. Spirit, we begin to understand the

  128. foundational truth that the Holy Spirit

  129. is fully God. The spirit isn't some

  130. secondary figure. The spir the Holy

  131. Spirit isn't some spiritual sidekick.

  132. The spirit is not Robin to God being

  133. Batman. That's not how it works. The

  134. spirit is a third person of the Trinity.

  135. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These are

  136. not three gods. One God, three persons,

  137. united in purpose, equal in nature, and

  138. working together in perfect love. We see

  139. it throughout scripture. In fact, in

  140. Genesis chapter 1, we read that the

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  141. spirit of God, the spirit of God is

  142. hovering over the waters. You see, the

  143. Holy Spirit wasn't added at a later

  144. date. The Holy Spirit was there from the

  145. beginning, active in the creative work

  146. of God. Now, fast forward to Jesus's

  147. baptism in Luke chapter 3. It is a

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  148. beautiful picture of the Trinity. You

  149. have Jesus the son being baptized. You

  150. have the Holy Spirit descending from

  151. heaven like a dove. And you have God the

  152. Father saying, "This is my son with whom

  153. I'm well pleased." All three persons are

  154. present at the same time, unified and

  155. involved in the work of salvation. Now,

  156. that matters because it lets us know

  157. that the Holy Spirit isn't this vague

  158. force out there somewhere or it's not an

  159. optional part of the Christian life. The

  160. spirit is just as divine and just as

  161. essential as the father and as the son,

  162. equal in power and wisdom and love. So

  163. to know the spirit is to know God. In

  164. the Methodist tradition, we affirm this

  165. rich understanding of the trinity.

  166. Wesley again the founder of Methodism

  167. never saw the Holy Spirit as separate

  168. from our life of with God or our mission

  169. for the church. He taught that the

  170. spirit works in harmony with the father

  171. and the son in every part of salvation

  172. from awakening God's love to making us

  173. new in Christ to helping us become more

  174. holy every single day. Wesley described

  175. salvation as a journey of grace with the

  176. Holy Spirit actively involved in every

  177. step on the journey. Now that journey of

  178. grace includes three types of grace.

  179. Pervenient grace which is where the

  180. spirit gently draws us to God even

  181. before we realize it. That's the spirit

  182. being there before we know the spirit's

  183. there. which leads us to justifying

  184. grace, which is the spirit assuring us

  185. that we are forgiven and made right with

  186. God through our faith in Jesus. Then

  187. leading us to sanctifying grace, which

  188. is the spirit working in us, in our

  189. hearts, helping us to grow in love and

  190. empowering us to live holy lives every

  191. single day. And Wesley then talks about

  192. the practical work of the spirit in our

  193. daily life, guiding us, convicting us,

  194. encouraging us, empowering us to do

  195. good. For Wesley and for us as United

  196. Methodists, the doctrine of the Trinity

  197. isn't just for books or creeds to be

  198. read or talked about in church.

  199. The Trinity and the Spirit is the

  200. lifegiving truth that fuels our passion

  201. for holy living, giving us a deeper

  202. connection with God every single day.

  203. But it takes a little bit of work on our

  204. part. So when we say that the Holy

  205. Spirit is part of the Trinity, we're

  206. declaring that the Spirit is God with

  207. us, God in us, and God working through

  208. us. Again, the Spirit is not a

  209. background figure. So just like we

  210. worship God the Father and God the Son,

  211. we are to worship God the Spirit with

  212. awe, with gratitude, and with trust.

  213. That's what the spirited sermon series

  214. is all about. Now, I want to dig a

  215. little deeper this morning on what it

  216. means for the Holy Spirit of God to work

  217. in us. As I've said before, salvation is

  218. more than just a moment. It is a

  219. journey. And the Holy Spirit is the one

  220. that walks with us on that journey every

  221. step of the way. Salvation is this

  222. dynamic relationship we have with God

  223. made possible by grace brought about by

  224. the power of the Holy Spirit. Wesley

  225. believed and I would agree with him that

  226. the spirit doesn't just show up at one

  227. point in our lives. The spirit is

  228. constantly at work from beginning to

  229. end. That is what it means to be on a

  230. journey of grace. And it all starts with

  231. that pervenient grace. Now prevenient is

  232. a fancy word that simply means to go

  233. before means the spirit is stirring our

  234. hearts and awakening our conscience and

  235. inviting us to be ready to respond to

  236. God's love when that moment arises. In

  237. John 16:8, the spirit Jesus says the

    John 16:8

  238. spirit will convict the world concerning

  239. sin and righteousness and judgment. Now

  240. that conviction isn't about shame. That

  241. conviction is about opening our eyes.

  242. The spirit is nudging us, letting us

  243. know that there is more to this life

  244. than we see on our own. The spirit calls

  245. us to truth even when we don't yet

  246. recognize the spirit's voice. For

  247. Wesley, pervenient grace was evidence of

  248. God's mercy. It meant that no one is

  249. ever too far from God to be reached.

  250. Think about that for a second. No one is

  251. ever too far from God to be reached

  252. because the Holy Spirit is already in

  253. their life. Which brings us to that

  254. justifying grace, that next step on the

  255. journey. When the spirit helps make us

  256. new, when we come to faith in Christ,

  257. when we confess our sins and we trust

  258. and put our trust in in Jesus for

  259. forgiveness, then we experience

  260. justifying grace. That moment that we're

  261. made right with God, we're forgiven.

  262. We're reconciled. We're adopted into

  263. God's family. In Romans 5, Paul writes

  264. that through faith, we are justified

  265. that God's love has been poured out into

  266. our hearts through the Holy Spirit. It's

  267. the Holy Spirit that assures us that we

  268. are saved, giving us peace and

  269. confidence that we actually belong to

  270. God. Now, this isn't just a legal

  271. declaration. It's actually a relational

  272. change. The spirit helps us not just to

  273. know about God's love but to feel God's

  274. love deep in our heart. The spirit is

  275. whispering to us, you are forgiven. You

  276. are

  277. free. You are

  278. mine. Allowing us to move to that final

  279. step, that sanctifying grace, which is

  280. the spirit helping us

  281. grow. You see, salvation and the spirit

  282. don't stop at that moment we receive

  283. God's forgiveness. It's an ongoing

  284. process. The spirit doesn't just clean

  285. house and then leave. The spirit moves

  286. in and helps renovate our heart. That's

  287. what Wesley called sanctifying grace.

  288. It's the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit

  289. making us more like Jesus. In Galatians

  290. 5, Paul gives us the fruit of the

  291. spirit, right? Love, joy, peace,

  292. patience, kindness, goodness,

  293. faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

  294. Those are not fruits that we can produce

  295. in our own power. Those are evidence of

  296. the spirit living in us and shaping us.

  297. Wesley believed that the spirit the

  298. spirit empowers us to live holy lives.

  299. Now listen to this. Not by striving

  300. harder, not by doing

  301. more, but by yielding more to God's

  302. presence. This is where it's important.

  303. It's not about us doing more or striving

  304. harder. It's about us yielding our life

  305. more to God's presence. Sanctification

  306. is a lifelong process, but the goal is

  307. crystal clear. The goal is perfect love.

  308. Loving God with all we are and loving

  309. others as Christ loved us. Remember that

  310. included his willingness to die for

  311. other people. Just

  312. imagine being able to respond in every

  313. situation the way Jesus would respond.

  314. What would that look like? Now, I don't

  315. know about you, I'm not quite there yet.

  316. I was there this morning when I woke up.

  317. Then I got out of bed and it was all

  318. done. Right? That's just how it works.

  319. The bottom line, though, is this. It's

  320. the heartbeat of Methodism is our

  321. understanding of salvation. We are a

  322. life saved by grace by Jesus, then

  323. transformed by grace, the

  324. spirit, which God gives us to do what

  325. we're called to do. So what does that

  326. mean for us today? Where does the rubber

  327. meet the road? Because the Holy Spirit

  328. is more than just about theology and

  329. doctrine. It's about real

  330. life. Number one, when we are in a

  331. relationship with the Holy Spirit, we

  332. realize we're not alone. In a world

  333. where people feel isolated, overwhelmed,

  334. uncertain, the Holy Spirit is God's

  335. constant presence with us. Jesus called

  336. the spirit a comforter. That's exactly

  337. what the spirit is. The Holy Spirit

  338. doesn't leave us to face life's

  339. challenges all by herself. When we don't

  340. know what to pray, the Holy Spirit

  341. intercedes for us. When we feel weak,

  342. the Spirit gives us strength. When we

  343. feel confused, the Spirit guides us into

  344. truth. This isn't just a nice theory. It

  345. is an actual promise. We're never

  346. without help. We're never without hope.

  347. The spirit is with us every step of the

  348. way. Which leads us to the second point.

  349. We can

  350. change. It's one of the most encouraging

  351. truths of the Christian faith. We don't

  352. have to stay the same. The Holy Spirit

  353. is in the business of transformation.

  354. The spirit takes our brokenness, our bad

  355. habits, our wounds, our weaknesses, and

  356. begins to make something beautiful out

  357. of all of those. You see, it isn't about

  358. becoming perfect overnight.

  359. Sanctification is about daily becoming

  360. more like Jesus through the Spirit's

  361. work in us. If we're struggling with

  362. patience, the spirit grows patience in

  363. us, right? Usually by putting us in

  364. situations that require us to use

  365. patience, right? Are we wrestling with

  366. anger and bitterness? The spirit softens

  367. our heart. Do we want to love more like

  368. Jesus? The spirit empowers us to make

  369. that kind of love happen. As Methodists,

  370. we believe in the real lasting change

  371. that is possible through the spirit. Not

  372. by our own strength, through the spirit

  373. of God, which lets us know that we

  374. actually have a purpose. Because the

  375. Holy Spirit doesn't only work in us. We

  376. are told that the Holy Spirit works

  377. through us. Every believer is given

  378. spiritual gifts, special abilities,

  379. passions. We're empowered by the spirit

  380. to build up the church and to serve the

  381. world. Now let me tell you what that

  382. means. That means that your life

  383. matters. Your story

  384. matters. You have something to offer and

  385. the spirit will show you how to offer

  386. it. Maybe your gift is encouragement.

  387. You know, lifting others up with your

  388. words. Maybe it's teaching or serving or

  389. or leadership. Maybe it's simply the

  390. ability to listen to somebody and show

  391. compassion. Maybe it's just your

  392. willingness to show up and be present.

  393. Whatever it is for you, the spirit

  394. equips you not just to attend church,

  395. but to be the church. You see, once we

  396. accept Christ for ourselves, our job is

  397. to share that with others. So today, I

  398. want you to ask yourself a couple of

  399. questions. Am I open to the spirit's

  400. work in my

  401. life? Am I responding to God's grace or

  402. am I resisting it? And am I walking

  403. daily with the spirit or or just going

  404. through the motions? You see, the good

  405. news is we don't have to earn the Holy

  406. Spirit's presence in our life. We simply

  407. have to welcome the spirit in. And as we

  408. pray and as we listen and as we obey,

  409. the spirit will guide our thoughts,

  410. shape our character, direct our steps.

  411. And then in the words of Wesley, the

  412. spirit of God not only begins but

  413. carries on the work of grace in our

  414. soul. That means no matter where we are

  415. on the journey, whether we're starting

  416. out, whether we're struggling, whether

  417. we're growing, whether it hasn't even

  418. begun yet, the Holy Spirit is with us

  419. and in us. And the best part is the

  420. spirit is not finished with us yet.

  421. From the beginning of creation to the

  422. everyday moments of our life right now,

  423. the Holy Spirit has been at work forming

  424. and saving and transforming and

  425. empowering

  426. us. The spirit is our comforter, our

  427. guide, our strength, our friend. This is

  428. not just a truth to understand. It is a

  429. relationship to enter into. The spirit

  430. longs to fill our life with power and

  431. with love and with purpose and with joy.

  432. Now, in the United Methodist tradition,

  433. we have what's called a book of worship.

  434. And if you look through that book of

  435. worship and look at a lot of the

  436. different liturgies we have, you will

  437. see a short prayer that is all through

  438. there. And the prayer is this. Come Holy

  439. Spirit, come. It's a really simple

  440. prayer, but it's a powerful prayer. It's

  441. a prayer of invitation. It's a prayer of

  442. openness. It's a prayer recognizing our

  443. deep need for God's presence in

  444. everything we

  445. do. So I want to encourage you to make

  446. this your prayer. Come Holy Spirit,

  447. awaken my heart. Come Holy Spirit, guide

  448. my steps. Come Holy Spirit, grow the

  449. fruit of the spirit in my life. Come

  450. Holy Spirit, empower me to live boldly

  451. for you.

  452. May we never forget that the Holy Spirit

  453. is not just with us. The Holy Spirit is

  454. in us and is ready to lead us to a life

  455. of grace and love and

  456. holiness. Come, Holy Spirit, come. Let's

  457. pray. Lord, we are so grateful that you

  458. have done so much for us. You sent your

  459. son to walk among us to give us an

  460. example of how to live our life here in

  461. this world. And then you sent your

  462. spirit to empower us to be like Jesus.

  463. Help us to receive that gift of grace

  464. that comes from a relationship with

  465. Christ and then connect with the spirit

  466. to empower

  467. us to be more bold for you.

  468. to do what you have asked us to do to

  469. become more like Jesus every single day.

  470. May we realize there's nothing we can do

  471. on our own, but with the Holy Spirit's

  472. help, we can become the follower you

  473. want us to be. Come, Holy Spirit,

  474. come. Amen.
