  23. >> Good morning.

  24. >> Welcome to worship at Christ Church on

  25. this Epiphany Sunday. My name is Kelly

  26. Black. I'm the associate pastor here and

  27. it is a joy to be worshiping with you

  28. today. I want to ask you, if you haven't

  29. already done so, to take the connection

  30. card that's in your bulletins, take a

  31. moment, fill that out, let us know that

  32. you are worshiping here today. And if

  33. you have a prayer request, you can note

  34. that on the right side of the card. If

  35. you want to do that digitally, if you're

  36. worshiping with us at home, or if you

  37. are digitally inclined and you're in the

  38. room, you can scan the QR code and give

  39. us all that information. this way. Our

  40. prayer team and our pastors want to pray

  41. with and for you for whatever is going

  42. on in your life as we roll into this new

  43. year. But now I would invite you to rise

  44. in body or in spirit as we sing together

  112. Thank you to our wise men for opening

  113. our worship service today. Will you join

  114. with me in our call to worship? We

  115. gather as people looking for the star, a

  116. sign that God is at work in the world.

  123. presence, the assurance that we are not

  124. alone and that love will have the last

  125. word.

  126. >> God, help us.

  127. On this Epiphany Sunday, may the light

  128. of love shine among us, revealing divine

  129. glory through neighbors, known and

  130. unknown, vulnerable children, and

  131. unexpected gifts.

  142. Happy New Year. I'm Stacy D and I'm very

  143. happy to be joining you this first

  144. Sunday in 2026 as a liturgist. Every

  145. notion we have about power, success,

  146. wealth, and achievement, God takes and

  147. tosses out the window. More importantly,

  148. God comes to us to upset our idea that

  149. we must save ourselves.

  150. In Jesus, God comes to us removing our

  151. sin, our failures, our expectations so

  152. we might have life. Please join me as we

  153. pray together saying, "Gracious God, we

  154. would like to be among those who saw the

  155. coming of the Christ child, those who

  156. dropped all that they were doing and

  157. traveled to worship the coming of God's

  158. love into this world.

  159. We would like to be those who cared for

  160. God in infant vulnerability,

  161. who cuddled and comforted the growing

  162. child, that he might know love and

  163. safety. And yet, merciful God, we must

  164. recognize all the times we are more like

  165. Herod.

  166. Whenever we in our actions, in our

  167. inactions, find our own need for control

  168. more compelling than the needs of others

  169. for health and safety.

  170. Whenever we cling to the security of our

  171. privilege rather than standing up for

  172. the rights of the oppressed,

  173. whenever we are complicit in the harming

  174. of innocence for the sake of profit or

  175. power or because we fear to know and to

  176. change the injustices of this world.

  177. Loving God, we confess our sins against

  178. you and one another and pray that you

  179. will fill us with your light that we may

  180. live our lives as true disciples in your

  181. name without counting the cost. In the

  182. name of Christ, the one who showed us

  183. the way, we pray. Amen.

  184. >> [music]

  185. >> Now hear these words of assurance. God's

  186. light is present in this world. Present

  187. in the Christ child, born to lead us out

  188. of darkness. Present in the star, in all

  189. that guides us to love. God's light is

  190. in this world and the darkness did not

  191. overcome it. God's grace is in this

  192. world and our missteps will not overcome

  193. it. We are loved. We are forgiven.

  194. Allelujah.

  195. Thanks be to God.

  196. The light of God fills this sanctuary

  197. and exposes the darkness that stalks our

  198. souls. The love of God offers us grace

  199. and forgiveness so we may share that

  200. grace with others.

  201. As we take a moment in this time of

  202. worship to share the peace of Christ.

  203. Whether we are worshiping here or at

  204. home, lift up your neighbors in prayer

  205. with the words, "The peace of the Lord

  206. be with you, knowing that as we worship

  207. together, we are united in Christ." Now,

  208. please stand and share the peace of

  209. Christ with each other.

  210. >> [music]

  211. >> Happy

  212. [music]

  213. birthday.

  214. [music]

  215. >> [music]

  216. >> Please be seated.

  217. Our scripture reading this morning is

  218. from 2 Corinthians 1:es 8 and 9.

  219. We do not want you to be uninformed,

  220. brothers and sisters, about the troubles

  221. we experienced in the province of Asia.

  222. We were under great pressure far beyond

  223. our ability to endure so that we

  224. despared of life itself. Indeed, we felt

  225. we had received the sentence of death.

  226. But this has happened that we might not

  227. rely on ourselves but on God who raises

  228. the dead.

  229. Thanks be to God.

  230. Amen.

  231. Well, happy new year again.

  232. >> It's a new year. It's a new sermon

  233. series. We're calling this one twisted

  234. scripture. We'll spend the next few

  235. Thank you for whoever chuckled for that.

  236. It was a good one, right? I actually um

  237. am on the team that uh comes up with the

  238. sermon series that we dreamed that up

  239. and and and and put that together for

  240. the year. And I recall wanting to name

  241. this sermon series crappy statements

  242. that make us feel bad about ourselves

  243. and question everything about our faith.

  244. but I lost um I think because it doesn't

  245. fit on the slides that we used. Also, we

  246. wanted to honor a very important uh '8s

  247. hair metal band. So, we have done a

  248. couple of different things by calling

  249. this new sermon series Twisted

  250. Scripture. We're going to spend the next

  251. few weeks looking at passages of the

  252. Bible or or listening to things rather

  253. that people say that they think are from

  254. the Bible that actually are not. And

  255. today we're getting started with this.

  256. God won't give you more than you can

  257. handle. Has anyone ever said that to

  258. someone else? Raise your hand. Few of

  259. you. All right, you're fessing up. Okay.

  260. Has anybody ever had that said to them?

  261. Okay. Yeah. More people have heard it

  262. said to them than have said it in all of

  263. the worship services so far. And before

  264. I say anything else about this

  265. particular uh statement, let me say

  266. this. I believe that every time that

  267. sentence has been said, whether you said

  268. it or whether you had someone say it to

  269. you, it was well-meaning. It's not

  270. scripturally accurate, but it was

  271. well-meaning. We human beings generally

  272. have very little idea what to say in the

  273. face of someone else's grief or pain or

  274. heartache. And we want to say something

  275. that is um helpful and hopeful. Um we

  276. want the person who needs to hear it to

  277. feel God's peace and God's presence. And

  278. maybe one day we'll preach a sermon

  279. series on the things that you should say

  280. to someone who is experiencing heartache

  281. or hurt. But for now, let me say that

  282. God will not give you more than you can

  283. handle is not one of those things we

  284. should say.

  285. While it may sound reassuring on the

  286. surface, it can actually be hurtful. And

  287. in reality, like we've already said, the

  288. Bible doesn't actually say it. Before we

  289. get into what the Bible does say, I want

  290. to address why we think it says that. I

  291. think the confusion comes from 1

    1 Corinthians 10:13

  292. Corinthians 10:13. So, let me read that

  293. verse to you now. No temptation has

  294. overtaken you except what is common to

  295. mankind. And God is faithful. He will

  296. not let you be tempted beyond what you

  297. can bear. But when you are tempted, he

  298. will also provide a way out so that you

  299. can endure it.

  300. a quick read of that verse and it does

  301. sound pretty close to God won't give you

  302. more than you can handle. But it

  303. actually says that God will not let you

  304. be tempted beyond what you can bear.

  305. Temptations and trials are two totally

  306. different things.

  307. The context of this verse is Paul

  308. writing a letter to the Corinthian

  309. church reminding them of some of the

  310. temptations that the Israelites faced

  311. hundreds of years prior. He lists them

  312. in this chapter, namely idolatry, sexual

  313. immorality, and grumbling, which I think

  314. is a funny third part to sexual

  315. immorality and idolatry. But there it

  316. is. At the end of that verse I just

  317. read, Paul offers reassurance to the

  318. Corinthians. They are going to face

  319. those same temptations, the temptations

  320. that the Israelites faced. But then Paul

  321. says this, "But when you are tempted,

  322. God will also provide a way out so that

  323. you can endure it." Just like God

  324. faithfully provided a way for the

  325. Israelites to escape temptations

  326. temptations centuries before, God will

  327. provide a way for the Corinthians to

  328. conquer those same temptations.

  329. Now, let's look at what today's

  330. scripture says, the one that Stacy just

  331. read for you. So, let's hear part of it

  332. again. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1:8

  333. 1:8 through the first part of verse 9.

  334. It says this, "We do not want you to be

  335. uninformed, brothers and sisters, about

  336. the troubles we experienced in the

  337. province of Asia. We were under great

  338. pressure far beyond our ability to

  339. endure, so that we despared of life

  340. itself. Indeed, we felt we had received

  341. the sentence of death."

  342. In the midst of this second letter to

  343. the Corinthians, Paul wants them to know

  344. about the trials that he and his fellow

  345. Christ followers have been up against.

  346. In trying to spread the gospel, they

  347. faced pressures far beyond what they

  348. could bear. It was just too much. God

  349. had given them more than they could

  350. handle. Things far beyond, as the

  351. scripture said, our ability to endure.

  352. One biblical commentary said, "They were

  353. utterly burdened beyond their own

  354. strength, and they were sure that they

  355. would die."

  356. In other words, God gave them more than

  357. they could handle on their own.

  358. But then immediately after expressing

  359. that they were hopeless to the point

  360. that they expected death to come, Paul

  361. says the words that changed everything

  362. for the Corinthians and it changes

  363. everything for us today.

  364. He says, "But this happened that we

  365. might not rely on ourselves but on God

  366. who raises the dead."

  367. They experienced what they did so that

  368. they would learn to stop depending on

  369. their human strength and instead turn to

  370. God's divine strength. That was the only

  371. thing that could save them. Depending on

  372. God didn't make the hard things go away.

  373. I think that's really important. It

  374. didn't make the struggles stop, but it

  375. meant that they could face those

  376. challenges and they could survive them.

  377. In verse 10, Paul says, "God has

  378. delivered us from such a deadly peril,

  379. and he will deliver us again. On him, we

  380. have set our hope that he will continue

  381. to deliver us."

  382. Once Paul and his companions

  383. acknowledged that they could not depend

  384. on or save themselves, once they gave

  385. their whole situation over to God, God

  386. saved them. Not even a sentence of death

  387. was too big for God to handle. Jesus was

  388. already raised from the dead. So, we

  389. know God defeats even death.

  390. What was too much for them to handle by

  391. themselves was something that God could

  392. handle and God did.

  393. So, it sounds like I'm saying that the

  394. statement, "God won't give you more than

  395. you can handle," is not true. But it is

  396. true that God will give you more than

  397. you can handle. Yes, it's exactly what I

  398. just said. That's a really hard pill to

  399. swallow. mainly because it challenges

  400. what we know about God. We know that God

  401. is loving and good. We read that all

  402. throughout scripture. And would a loving

  403. God really allow us to struggle and to

  404. suffer?

  405. Evil takes many forms and a few of them

  406. are suffering and disease and sin.

  407. Evangelist Billy Graham said that over

  408. the course of his lifetime he was asked

  409. hundreds of times why God allows evil to

  410. happen. And his answer I found extremely

  411. refreshing. It was this. Honestly, I

  412. don't know the answer. Not fully.

  413. He went on to say he does know three

  414. important things about evil all from

  415. scripture.

  416. The first is that God is not the source

  417. of evil.

  418. God does not cause our struggles.

  419. Deuteronomy 32:4 says, "God is the rock.

    Deuteronomy 32:4

  420. His works are perfect and all his ways

  421. are just." Pair that with 1 John 3:8,

    1 John 3:8

  422. which says that the devil has been

  423. sinning from the beginning. And when you

  424. put those two together, God is perfect

  425. and just, and Satan has been sinning

  426. forever. So, we know that our struggles,

  427. our suffering, the evil that we

  428. experience come from Satan.

  429. The second thing Billy Graham said was

  430. that all evil will go away one day.

  431. Revelation 20 is a description of the

  432. defeat of Satan and highlights victory

  433. over death. To bring home this point

  434. into the next chapter, chapter 21:4,

  435. it says there will be no more death or

  436. crying or mourning or pain. In other

  437. words, all suffering, all evil will be

  438. gone, and in its place, we will know

  439. only joy and love.

  440. Those two promises from scripture help

  441. to bring us a little bit of peace as we

  442. hope for the future. But what about

  443. today?

  444. What about the evil and the suffering

  445. that we are facing right now in our

  446. lives?

  447. It's comforting for sure that God didn't

  448. cause the bad things to happen and that

  449. God will one day eradicate all of the

  450. evil in the world. But I've got to be

  451. honest, I have had some pretty low

  452. points in my life and I have seen and

  453. walked with a lot of people who have

  454. been at some very low points in theirs.

  455. And those promises, while beautiful and

  456. wonderful and really the bedrock of our

  457. Christian faith in many ways, do not

  458. always provide the comfort for the here

  459. and now. When we are in the thick of

  460. dealing with evil in the form of a

  461. horrible diagnosis,

  462. a sudden death, an addiction relapse,

  463. a job loss, a broken relationship,

  464. a financial crisis, a dying loved one,

  465. an uncertain future, or a combination of

  466. any of the above.

  467. For that comfort, for that hope, we turn

  468. to scripture again and to the third

  469. statement that Billy Graham made about

  470. evil. He said this, "Before God banishes

  471. all evil, in the end, God will allow us

  472. to triumph over it."

  473. When you feel like life has just piled

  474. it all on and there is not one more

  475. thing that you can handle and then there

  476. is one more thing that you have to

  477. handle.

  478. Remember Paul

  479. remember how Paul and his fellow Christ

  480. followers gave everything to God and

  481. depended not on their own strength but

  482. on God's. Paul told the Corinthians that

  483. God had delivered them and his

  484. companions. And remember that God told

  485. them that he would also deliver the

  486. Corinthians from whatever they would

  487. face. And from that, we know that God

  488. will deliver us, too.

  489. And not only will God deliver us from

  490. our sorrows, but here's the best part.

  491. God will turn our suffering from which

  492. he has delivered us into something good.

  493. Paul wrote again with Paul in his letter

  494. to the Romans chapter 8 28. In all

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  495. things, God works for the good of those

  496. who love him.

  497. In all things, there is no exception.

  498. God is working everything for good. We

  499. may not understand it. We may not

  500. realize it, but God is at work.

  501. Kinugi is an ancient Asian art form that

  502. takes broken ceramics and puts them back

  503. together into one piece.

  504. A specific Japanese lacquer is mixed

  505. with a rice or a flower glue and it

  506. creates a strong adhesive that is then

  507. used to bond the broken pieces back

  508. together again.

  509. Once the adhesive has dried, the cracks

  510. um where the adhesive now is are

  511. painted, usually red or black, and then

  512. they are dusted with a metallic powder.

  513. It's usually gold.

  514. Then the whole thing is glazed.

  515. It is a painstaking and a timeconsuming

  516. process. The finished product looks like

  517. this.

  518. We live in an age where just about

  519. everything is disposable.

  520. Where we don't fix broken things, we

  521. toss them out and we replace them. But

  522. Kugi teaches us that nothing is beyond

  523. repair. And what's so special about it

  524. is that that's not mended to look like

  525. it was never broken. Instead, the repair

  526. process highlights where there was once

  527. a break. It highlights where there is

  528. now healing.

  529. According to historians, kinugi not only

  530. extends the life of a piece of pottery,

  531. obviously, but it proudly displays its

  532. history, and it may even give the piece

  533. a greater emotional value than it had

  534. before it was broken.

  535. For those of you who feel like you are

  536. living in a moment where you have been

  537. given more than you can handle, I want

  538. you to hear something. And if you are

  539. not in that moment right now, because

  540. you may not be, I want you to file it

  541. away. Because one thing we know is that

  542. we're all likely to be there at some

  543. point.

  544. God will give you more than you can

  545. handle on your own.

  546. But God will never give you more than

  547. you can than God can handle.

  548. There is absolutely nothing that you can

  549. ever experience that God cannot deal

  550. with or take care of.

  551. There is no depth of despair or mourning

  552. that is so deep that Jesus cannot reach

  553. you. There is no darkness that is too

  554. black to keep the light of the world

  555. from finding you.

  556. There is no pain that is too

  557. overwhelming that the great physician

  558. cannot heal it.

  559. There is no path that you can go so far

  560. down that the good shepherd cannot lead

  561. you back.

  562. And when you feel like your heart has

  563. been shattered by suffering in any of

  564. its many forms, by having to deal with

  565. so much and handle so much in this life,

  566. know that your heart cannot possibly

  567. shatter into more pieces than God can

  568. put back together.

  569. Because it turn as it turns out God is

  570. an expert in kinugi when it comes to our

  571. hearts.

  572. Psalm 147 verse3 says God heals the

  573. brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

  574. And when he does bind up those wounds,

  575. when he does put those pieces back

  576. together, not if, but when. You better

  577. believe he is painting those mended

  578. cracks in your heart gold.

  579. Not to highlight your trauma, but to

  580. celebrate your survival and the ways

  581. that he has made you new in the

  582. aftermath of that trauma, not to draw

  583. attention to your past, but to remind

  584. you of the strength that God has given

  585. you to face your future.

  586. Those gold lines, those remarkable scars

  587. are an incredible testament not only to

  588. your story, but to God's.

  589. They tell the story of a God who never

  590. gave up on us.

  591. who never left us alone and who healed

  592. us, maybe even brought us back from the

  593. point of death.

  594. We could not do it on our own,

  595. but God can and God has and God will.

  596. Jesus once told his disciples that in

  597. this world you will have trouble. That

  598. was a fact. Those disciples had some

  599. trouble.

  600. In this world, we too will have trouble.

  601. We are going to face trouble. We're

  602. going to face struggle. We're going to

  603. face heartache more than we can handle

  604. on our own.

  605. But Jesus did not just leave his

  606. disciples to face their struggles by

  607. themselves. Instead, he offered them

  608. divine reassurance when he said to them,

  609. "In this world, you will have trouble,

  610. but take heart. I have overcome the

  611. world.

  612. Jesus did indeed overcome the world and

  613. everything evil then and he is still

  614. doing it today. He is helping us

  615. overcome the evil and the suffering that

  616. we are experiencing right here, right

  617. now today.

  618. And when he has walked us through it, we

  619. will have the beautiful golden scars to

  620. prove God's love.

  621. Let us pray.

  622. God, some days it feels like there is

  623. too much for us to handle and we are

  624. struggling to see a way out.

  625. Remind us

  626. that you are the way out. remind us that

  627. we cannot get through these things on

  628. our own, but we can get through them

  629. when we depend on you. Plant that seed

  630. in our hearts. Help us to hear that

  631. message every time we despair.

  632. And help to heal us so that the scars we

  633. end up with are beautiful and a

  634. testament to a life changed by your

  635. love, your grace, your mercy, and by

  636. your presence always, no matter what.

  637. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
