  16. Today's scripture reading is from the

  17. New Testament, the Gospel of John,

    John 10:27

  18. chapter 10, verse 27.

  19. This short verse is part of the famous

  20. passage which is verses 27 through30

  21. where Jesus declares his divine identity

  22. and guarantees the eternal security of

  23. his followers. Hear now this reading

  24. from the gospel of John.

  25. My sheep listen to my voice. I know them

  26. and they follow me.

  27. The word of God for the people of God.

  28. Thanks be to God.

  29. I never liked to play the game Simon

  30. Says as a kid. It was an easy game to

  31. play and lots of people can participate

  32. and it's one that I remember playing

  33. often. And if you recall, Simon says has

  34. one leader. I'm talking about the old

  35. school Simon says, by the way, not the

  36. Simon game, the electronic game where

  37. you press the colors. Somebody was very

  38. confused about that last night. So, let

  39. me clarify now. Um, so there is one

  40. person who is Simon and who is giving

  41. out leaders and then there's a whole

  42. group of people who are listening to

  43. Simon talk. And as long as Simon

  44. prefaces what he says with Simon says,

  45. they're supposed to do whatever he says.

  46. And if he doesn't say Simon says before

  47. whatever command it is and they do it,

  48. they are out of the game. And so the

  49. winner is the person who can continue to

  50. follow the commands but never doing the

  51. ones that don't have Simon says before

  52. them. I was going to make you try, but I

  53. got a little too giddy at 9:00 when I

  54. made them do it. So, we're going to pass

  55. them that, but you can all play

  56. privately in your own homes later. It's

  57. okay. Did you know that there is a

  58. theory out there that the Simon of Simon

  59. says is named for Jesus's disciple,

  60. Simon Peter? I learned this this week.

  61. Although he is usually known by Peter

  62. through most of the Gospels, his actual

  63. first name is, of course, Simon. And if

  64. you remember, it's Simon Peter that

  65. denied Jesus three times before he was

  66. crucified. But after that resurrection,

  67. Jesus appears to Simon Peter. And three

  68. times Jesus asks him if he loves Jesus.

  69. And each time the response is a yes. And

  70. it's in answering affirmatively to

  71. Jesus's questions that Simon Peter

  72. becomes one of Jesus's greatest

  73. followers and preachers of the gospel.

  74. And so the correlation is that by

  75. following what Simon says, it will lead

  76. you to good things. And if you don't

  77. follow those things, it leads you

  78. astray. And that correlation is made by

  79. saying, well, if Simon is such a good

  80. follower of Jesus, then doing what Simon

  81. says is sort of like doing what Jesus

  82. says. This is a theory I found on

  83. YouTube, so take it with a grain of

  84. salt. I thought it was interesting. So,

  85. fast forward from Simon Peter 2,000

  86. years to a backyard in Upper St. Clair

  87. where we find a young girl who

  88. frequently played Simon says with her

  89. siblings and her neighbors, but who

  90. hated every second of it. And that is

  91. because I have always been just a teensy

  92. bit competitive. And I remember rarely

  93. winning this game. And the reason that I

  94. rarely won it was for one very simple

  95. reason. I would act faster than I would

  96. listen.

  97. Simon says requires us to listen before

  98. we act. We have to listen for that Simon

  99. says command.

  100. And much like we learned about in Gaga

  101. Ball last week, we also have to stay

  102. alert no matter how long the game goes

  103. on. If we can't do those things, if we

  104. can't listen and we can't stay alert, we

  105. eventually end up following the wrong

  106. command and we're out of the game. The

  107. parallel from that game to our spiritual

  108. lives is a pretty obvious one. I think

  109. if we read in the Bible of a command

  110. that Jesus gives, go and make disciples

  111. for example, or we hear Jesus speaking

  112. to us directly and nudging us to do

  113. something, then we are to follow that

  114. command. If we don't know for sure that

  115. it's Jesus who gives the command, then

  116. we don't follow it.

  117. Today's scripture, as Mark just read for

  118. us, is short and sweet, but it also

  119. holds the key for teaching us how we can

  120. hear Jesus's voice and why it's so

  121. important to our faith to always not

  122. only be listening for it, but to follow

  123. it. The first thing the verse says is,

  124. "My sheep listen to my voice."

  125. Sheep don't have the best reputation in

  126. the animal world. They're kind of

  127. smelly. Their wool is a little bit

  128. dirty. They don't always seem like the

  129. smartest animal in the pen if we're

  130. being honest, but scientists who have

  131. made a career out of studying sheep have

  132. found that sheep actually have some

  133. pretty amazing qualities and habits. For

  134. instance, did you know that sheep can

  135. recognize, differentiate, and remember

  136. both sheep and human faces? And not just

  137. one or two. It's been proven that an

  138. individual sheep can remember 50

  139. different sheep faces and 10 different

  140. human faces over the course of two

  141. years. I thought that was pretty

  142. remarkable. Sheep experience the same

  143. emotions that we humans do. As crazy as

  144. it sounds, scientists have documented

  145. that sheep feel things like fear and

  146. rage and anger and despair and boredom

  147. and disgust and happiness, just to name

  148. a few.

  149. A flock of sheep can also differentiate

  150. the sound of their shepherd's voice from

  151. a stranger's voice. And we've talked

  152. about that from this pulpit before.

  153. Those sheep listen to their shepherd and

  154. they learn to hear different inonations

  155. that are unique to that voice. And once

  156. they have that memory of the voice they

  157. know, it can help to keep them calm.

  158. They'll follow commands given by their

  159. shepherd. But if they hear a different

  160. voice that's trying to guide them, the

  161. sheep will become agitated and stressed.

  162. As Christians, it's necessary that we

  163. learn to listen for Jesus's voice. But

  164. how do you know when it's Jesus talking

  165. to you? I get asked that question a lot

  166. because there are some really loud

  167. voices in the world that are competing

  168. with Jesus for our attention. There are

  169. the voices of our friends and family who

  170. want to give us advice.

  171. There are the voices of social media

  172. that are telling us what to believe. The

  173. voices of advertisers that tell us what

  174. we need to possess in order to be happy.

  175. The voices of movies and TV and music

  176. that seem to be constantly in the

  177. background no matter where we go and

  178. often succeed in drowning out everything

  179. else that's in our heads.

  180. So, how in the world do we learn to

  181. listen for Jesus's voice over all those

  182. other voices?

  183. One way is to read the Bible, to study

  184. the words in red, the ones that Jesus

  185. said.

  186. Learn what he said and what he didn't

  187. say to the crowds and to the disciples

  188. when he was preaching and teaching. In

  189. three of the four gospels, Jesus says to

  190. the crowds who have gathered to hear him

  191. speak, "Whoever has ears, let him hear."

  192. He says that to stress the importance of

  193. what he was saying and to encourage the

  194. crowd to ponder it deeply so that they

  195. would come to know and understand his

  196. words.

  197. When we know the character of Jesus,

  198. when we know what he taught and we know

  199. who he is, it becomes easier to know

  200. which voice is Jesus because that voice

  201. will align with what we know of Jesus's

  202. character.

  203. We can also seek out a trusted praying

  204. friend's advice. Like sheep, we humans

  205. tend to hang out together. We trust the

  206. people who are in our flock. And so, if

  207. you aren't sure that what you're hearing

  208. is Jesus speaking to you or a different

  209. influence, tell a friend what you're

  210. hearing. Talk to that trusted friend and

  211. ask them to pray for you and for your

  212. situation and see if that friend hears

  213. the same thing that you are hearing. If

  214. they do, it can be an affirmation that

  215. Jesus is speaking.

  216. Finally, it's important to understand

  217. that we cannot learn to discern the

  218. voice of Jesus if we don't even give

  219. Jesus space to speak. If we don't stop

  220. talking long enough to let Jesus talk,

  221. we make it very difficult to cons to

  222. discern his voice. If we do not ever

  223. listen for it in silence, even for just

  224. a few minutes. And so if that's not a

  225. part of your regular prayer time, I

  226. encourage you to make it part of your

  227. regular prayer time.

  228. The thing about listening for the voice

  229. of Jesus though is that sometimes Jesus

  230. doesn't speak right away and sometimes

  231. Jesus doesn't answer prayers right away.

  232. And let's be honest, that drives most of

  233. us insane.

  234. It's no surprise then that we turn

  235. elsewhere for answers.

  236. We are quick to listen to the voices of

  237. the world because we often see quick

  238. results when we do. Listening for Jesus

  239. requires patience and faith and trust.

  240. It requires holding out hope in the

  241. waiting because it may be a while before

  242. we hear Jesus speaking, before we get

  243. that answer we want. And waiting is

  244. hard. But I encourage you to keep doing

  245. it. Keep praying and keep listening

  246. because Jesus will never not speak.

  247. Sometimes we just have to give him a

  248. little bit of extra time.

  249. The third part of this verse is my sheep

  250. follow me.

  251. Sheep learn to listen to their

  252. shepherd's voice, the one they know, the

  253. one that gives them peace and comfort.

  254. And then a remarkable thing happens.

  255. They will follow that shepherd wherever

  256. the shepherd goes. They move together in

  257. flocks. They stick together. They

  258. collectively follow that shepherd. And

  259. they trust that leader so much that if

  260. that shepherd would guide them off the

  261. edge of the cliff, the sheep would

  262. follow the shepherd.

  263. Thankfully, when we follow our shepherd,

  264. Jesus, we are following someone who will

  265. never lead us into harm's way. How do we

  266. know that? The Bible tells us so.

  267. The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not

  268. want.

  269. This is of course the beginning of the

  270. beloved 23rd Psalm which lays out for us

  271. what happens when we follow our

  272. shepherd. And this first line sets the

  273. tone for what is to come. In following

  274. the Lord, we will never want for

  275. anything. He will supply everything we

  276. need. Not always what we want, but

  277. everything that we need to make it

  278. through every experience we have in

  279. life.

  280. The simplicity of that first line should

  281. be enough.

  282. But then King David, who wrote this

  283. psalm, continues on, and he painted a

  284. picture, a beautiful one, of what it

  285. looks like to follow our shepherd.

  286. He maketh me to lie down in green

  287. pastures. He leadeth me beside the still

  288. waters. He restoreth my soul. In other

  289. words, he gives us rest and peace.

  290. He leadth me in the paths of

  291. righteousness for his name's sake. Our

  292. shepherd will not lead us anywhere that

  293. is not pleasing to him.

  294. Yay, though I walk through the valley of

  295. the shadow of death, I will fear no

  296. evil, for thou art with me. Thy rod and

  297. thy staff, they comfort me.

  298. Even in the darkest days of our lives

  299. where we have lost someone we love

  300. dearly, our shepherd is with us. Our

  301. shepherd comforts and protects us.

  302. Thou preparest a table before me in the

  303. presence of mine enemies. Thou anointest

  304. my head with oil. My cup runth over.

  305. Even as our enemies surround us, our

  306. shepherd makes sure that we are well

  307. cared for and protects our hearts. He

  308. anoints with oil the wounds that the

  309. world gives and provides abundant water

  310. for our thirst.

  311. But I want you to listen especially to

  312. the last line of this psalm.

  313. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow

  314. me all the days of my life and I will

  315. dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

  316. When we are following the shepherd,

  317. what's following us?

  318. God's goodness and God's mercy. And as

  319. long as we follow the shepherd, we will

  320. always be in the presence of God.

  321. Sheep trust and they follow their

  322. shepherd, not knowing where the

  323. shepherd's going to take them. But when

  324. we trust Jesus, when we know his voice

  325. and we choose to follow it, we may not

  326. always know where he is leading us.

  327. That's not what this says. But we know

  328. without a doubt that he will never lead

  329. us astray.

  330. So we like sheep listen to Jesus's voice

  331. and we like sheep follow him.

  332. But the second part of today's

  333. scripture, the piece that is in between

  334. those two parts may be the most

  335. important part I think of this

  336. scripture. And it says this, I know my

  337. sheep.

  338. We learned that the sheep recognize the

  339. face and the voice of their shepherd, so

  340. they know who to follow. But did you

  341. know that the shepherd knows their sheep

  342. just as well as the sheep know the

  343. shepherd? A flock of sheep may all look

  344. the same to us, but shepherds can

  345. identify the sheep in their flock by

  346. their facial features and by their

  347. bleets, the noises that they make, and

  348. by their different mannerisms.

  349. I'm not sure how much comfort that gives

  350. a sheep, but when I correlate that to we

  351. as sheep who are learning to listen for

  352. Jesus's voice and learning to follow

  353. him, here's what I do know. When you

  354. follow Jesus, you are following someone

  355. who knows all about you, can pick you

  356. out of a crowd, knows all of your

  357. particular idiosyncrasies, and still

  358. wants you in his flock.

  359. Pastor Elizabeth Johnson once said this

  360. about our relationship with Jesus as our

  361. shepherd. She said, "The good shepherd

  362. tells us, everything depends on

  363. belonging to him.

  364. Never does our status before God depend

  365. on how we feel, on having the right

  366. experience, on being free of doubt, or

  367. on what we accomplish. It depends on one

  368. thing, that we are known by the

  369. shepherd.

  370. There is so much security and serenity

  371. in being known by Jesus and resting in

  372. the comfort that someone knows all about

  373. you, loves you anyway, and wants to be

  374. in relationship with you.

  375. And once we learn to follow that one

  376. voice, the voice of the shepherd who

  377. died so that we could be in his flock

  378. and dwell in his house forever,

  379. the challenge is to keep listening.

  380. Galatians 4:9 says, "But now that you

    Galatians 4:9

  381. know God, or rather are known by God,

  382. how is it that you are turning back to

  383. these weak and miserable forces? Do you

  384. wish to be enslaved by them all over

  385. again?

  386. And I think I hope that the answer is

  387. no. We don't want to go back to the way

  388. that we were. We want to live in the

  389. light of Jesus. And so don't succumb to

  390. temptation.

  391. Don't become enslaved by the voices of

  392. the world just because they promise

  393. instant gratification

  394. and just because you have to wait a

  395. little bit longer to hear the voice of

  396. Jesus speak.

  397. This weekend we celebrate the 250th

  398. anniversary of the start of an

  399. experiment in democracy that has stood

  400. the test of time. Our amazing and

  401. wonderful and occasionally flawed and

  402. incredibly unique United States of

  403. America.

  404. The founding fathers worked together to

  405. create to create a country where

  406. everyone had a chance at life, liberty,

  407. and the pursuit of happiness.

  408. away from the tyranny of England. And

  409. while England may not be a threat to us

  410. anymore, there is always someone who

  411. wants to challenge our freedom and our

  412. independence, our radical way of living

  413. that is so very different from so many

  414. other parts in the world.

  415. The voices of this world will tell us

  416. that we need to put our faith in our

  417. government and in our political leaders

  418. to trust their guidance.

  419. Christianity,

  420. the practice of course of following

  421. Jesus is really not much different when

  422. it comes to the radical way of living.

  423. There are always going to be voices that

  424. challenge our faith. Much like those

  425. that are challenging democracy, there

  426. are always going to be voices that make

  427. us question our belief, question how we

  428. can live so different than the rest of

  429. the world.

  430. But here's what Christians know that

  431. sets us apart.

  432. Real life,

  433. real liberty, and real happiness can

  434. only be found when we follow Jesus.

  435. When we listen to his voice, we will

  436. experience says it in the Bible,

  437. abundant life, liberation from our sins

  438. and happiness and joy that is far beyond

  439. anything our great country and our world

  440. can offer us.

  441. Playing Simon says

  442. is simple.

  443. And so at the very heart of it is

  444. following Jesus. If Simon tells you to

  445. do it, you don't do it. If Jesus doesn't

  446. tell you to do it, you don't do it.

  447. But by the same token, if the voice of

  448. Jesus tells you to do something, go

  449. allin.

  450. Don't hesitate.

  451. Because when you follow Jesus, you are

  452. following the voice of a shepherd who

  453. knows you and who loves you and who has

  454. amazing things in store for you always.

  455. Let us pray.

  456. God, we thank you that we live in a

  457. country where we can worship you openly,

  458. where we can praise you without threat

  459. of violence, and we are grateful for the

  460. ways that you move in and through our

  461. community and through this country

  462. today. We pray that you would speak

  463. clearly to our hearts.

  464. That you would make it known that it is

  465. your voice that is calling us to do

  466. something or to say something. And then

  467. we pray that we might have the strength

  468. and the courage to be able to follow

  469. those things, to be able to do what it

  470. is that you want us to do so that we are

  471. able to be more faithful followers of

  472. yours. And so this world will know why

  473. we live the way that we do and who it is

  474. that we serve.

  475. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
