  1. What's going on, we're going to pick up in Luke chapter 8, verse number 40.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  2. You can follow along the screen as well.

  3. Verse 40 says,

  4. I love Peter's response.

  5. And when all denied, Peter and they that were with him said,

  6. Master, the multitude thronged thee and pressed thee, and sayest thou, who touched me?

  7. Peter's not afraid to rebuke the Lord.

  8. He's like, listen, you've lost your mind.

  9. Everybody's touching you, Lord.

  10. We're on a mission here.

  11. Let's just keep moving.

  12. Verse 46,

  13. And Jesus said,

  14. Somebody hath touched me, for I perceive that virtue has gone out of me.

  15. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling and falling down before him,

  16. and she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him

  17. and how she was healed immediately.

  18. And he said unto her,

  19. Daughter, be of good comfort.

  20. Thy faith hath made thee whole.

  21. Go in peace.

  22. And while he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house,

  23. saying to him,

  24. Thy daughter is dead.

  25. Trouble not the master.

  26. But when Jesus heard it,

  27. he answered him, saying,

  28. Fear not,

  29. believe only,

  30. and she shall be made whole.

  31. And when he came into the house,

  32. he suffered no man to go in,

  33. save Peter, James, and John,

  34. and the father of the mother and the maiden.

  35. And all wept and bewailed her,

  36. and he said,

  37. Weep not,

  38. she is not dead,

  39. but sleepeth.

  40. Verse 53,

  41. And they laughed him to scorn,

  42. knowing that she was dead.

  43. And he put them all out,

  44. and took her by the hand,

  45. and called,

  46. saying,

  47. Maid, arise.

  48. And her spirit came again,

  49. and she arose straightway,

  50. and he commanded to give her meat.

  51. And her parents were astonished.

  52. But he charged them,

  53. they should tell no man what was done.

  54. We've kind of seen over these last few weeks here in the eighth chapter of Luke,

  55. that Jesus is kind of,

  56. Luke is kind of showing Jesus' identity.

  57. Who he is.

  58. That he's not just a carpenter,

  59. he's not some rabbi.

  60. No, that he is God in the flesh.

  61. And he has authority over the nature,

  62. we saw that.

  63. Over these demons,

  64. he has it over death and disease.

  65. And he reminds us that there is nothing

  66. that we are going to face in life

  67. that he can't control.

  68. That he can't fix.

  69. That there may be desperation in life,

  70. there may be delay,

  71. there may be doubt,

  72. there may be all kinds of things.

  73. But God is able to give divine deliverance.

  74. Now sometimes that's here on this side,

  75. and sometimes that's on that side.

  76. But we're going to see how we can apply these truths to our life this morning.

  77. So let's go to hymn and prayer,

  78. and then we'll jump right in.

  79. Father, thank you for this time.

  80. Thank you for the songs that have been sung.

  81. Thank you for those that have come to worship you this morning.

  82. I pray that you would be with us now.

  83. Lord, I pray that you would just quiet our hearts and minds

  84. to the busyness of life,

  85. and maybe the things we brought with us,

  86. and the things we're facing ahead this week.

  87. Lord, I pray you would just speak to our hearts.

  88. I pray you would convict us where we need to,

  89. challenge us where we need to be.

  90. Lord, I pray if there's somebody here

  91. that does not know you as their Savior,

  92. that today they would realize that that is their greatest need.

  93. Lord, I pray you'd be with me.

  94. You would empty me of self,

  95. cleanse me of sin,

  96. fill me with your spirit,

  97. that I might be a help to these people this morning.

  98. And we ask it in Christ's name.

  99. Amen.

  100. Thank you so much for standing.

  101. You may be seated.

  102. You know what tests your patience almost more than anything?

  103. The DMV.

  104. Do we have any DMV employees?

  105. I don't want to.

  106. I'll pray for you if you do right now.

  107. You're like,

  108. I ain't raising my hand in a group of this many people.

  109. But you go there and you take a number

  110. and you sit down and you wait

  111. and you wait

  112. and you wait

  113. and you wait some more.

  114. And we know this.

  115. If anybody's driven down California Street

  116. about 5.50 in the morning,

  117. there's a line sitting right outside.

  118. I mean,

  119. and you look at those people

  120. and you realize maybe if you get in that line

  121. how woefully unprepared you are

  122. for what you just entered into.

  123. You see that some folks look like

  124. they're tailgating for a football game.

  125. I mean,

  126. we got snacks,

  127. comfy chairs,

  128. they're having a cornhole tournament.

  129. Because they know

  130. they're going to be here all day long.

  131. And they're there

  132. and some of them look like

  133. they've been there since last Tuesday.

  134. But you go into it

  135. and you're determined to stay hopeful.

  136. You tell yourself all the time,

  137. my number's got to be next.

  138. I mean,

  139. they're going to call me

  140. and then the loudspeaker calls

  141. now serving B47

  142. and you're Z197.

  143. Then you realize

  144. it's not going to happen anytime soon.

  145. And it's in that moment,

  146. in that waiting,

  147. that you realize

  148. that it doesn't matter who you are,

  149. it doesn't matter what position

  150. or money or influence,

  151. you just can't seem

  152. to get to the front of that line.

  153. You're really stuck

  154. until your number is called.

  155. And as we kind of walk

  156. through the Gospels,

  157. we see that every time Jesus shows up,

  158. there's a huge crowd.

  159. Jesus had just taken a trip

  160. to the other side of the Sea of Galilee

  161. and to the country of the Gadarenes

  162. and we saw that he met

  163. this maniac of Gadare

  164. and completely changed his life.

  165. And the people there

  166. weren't really understanding

  167. what was going on.

  168. They couldn't comprehend it

  169. so they said,

  170. we just need you to leave.

  171. We're not sure about you yet.

  172. So Jesus gets back in the boat

  173. and they come to the other side

  174. and we see the line

  175. is already gathered

  176. because they're thinking

  177. to themselves,

  178. well if he went that way,

  179. he's got to come back here.

  180. And they've been gathering

  181. on the shore

  182. and waiting for him to be there

  183. and the crowd is there

  184. but there is a man in the crowd

  185. that needs his number called.

  186. He's there waiting

  187. and thinking,

  188. when is Jesus coming back?

  189. I really need him to show up

  190. and we're introduced to him

  191. in verse number 41.

  192. That out of the mass of this people

  193. steps a man who's wealthy,

  194. who's powerful,

  195. who's most likely well respected

  196. in his community.

  197. But at this moment

  198. when we meet him

  199. in verse number 41,

  200. none of that matters.

  201. Doesn't matter what his position was.

  202. Doesn't matter what his bank account said.

  203. Why?

  204. Because his world

  205. has just collapsed.

  206. And the Bible tells us his name

  207. that his name was Jairus.

  208. So who was Jairus?

  209. Well we can see very quickly

  210. as we read this morning

  211. that he was a desperate father.

  212. But his job,

  213. verse 41,

  214. tells us that he was a ruler

  215. of the synagogue.

  216. So that's why we know

  217. that he's respected.

  218. These men in these communities

  219. would have been well off,

  220. they would have been well known,

  221. and they would have been

  222. very influential.

  223. Basically what his job was

  224. is he was kind of the one

  225. that managed the church,

  226. so to speak.

  227. But he ran it

  228. and he scheduled the teachers

  229. and he cared for the scrolls

  230. and he oversaw the services

  231. and really just kind of

  232. kept the synagogue up and running.

  233. And the synagogue

  234. wasn't just a church to them,

  235. that was the center of their life.

  236. That was the community

  237. would gather around that

  238. and they would come together

  239. and they would pray

  240. one for another

  241. and just everything

  242. about the synagogue

  243. was so vital

  244. to their everyday life.

  245. So they would be appreciative

  246. of a man like Jairus.

  247. So simply put,

  248. here's what we see about Jairus.

  249. People looked up to him.

  250. But yet when we're introduced

  251. to him here in our text,

  252. we see Jairus on his knees

  253. at the feet of Jesus.

  254. Jesus.

  255. Why?

  256. Because his only child,

  257. a girl about 12 years of age,

  258. lay dying.

  259. And we know if you're a parent,

  260. there's nothing you would not do

  261. for your child in this situation.

  262. We could assume,

  263. we don't know,

  264. but maybe she had been sick

  265. for a while

  266. and he had called the best doctors.

  267. He had called from Jerusalem.

  268. He may have had connections

  269. and he tried everything

  270. that he could

  271. and yet she didn't get any better.

  272. And sometimes we kind of

  273. read over this

  274. when we see that he fell down

  275. at Jesus' feet

  276. and besought him.

  277. He's kind of begging,

  278. he's pleading

  279. that he would come to his house.

  280. And we kind of maybe

  281. just read over that.

  282. But for Jairus,

  283. a man of his stature,

  284. a man of his occupation,

  285. for him to throw himself down

  286. in front of Jesus

  287. would have been shocking

  288. to the crowd.

  289. Maybe there were some

  290. that were closer

  291. and they saw Jairus come

  292. and said,

  293. excuse me,

  294. excuse me,

  295. like,

  296. what is Jairus doing here?

  297. Why is he here?

  298. And we know this

  299. as we study the Gospels

  300. that most of the religious leaders

  301. and those kind of in charge

  302. of situations like this

  303. wanted nothing to do with Jesus.

  304. Now, he wouldn't have been

  305. a Pharisee per se,

  306. but he would have had to kind of

  307. rub shoulders with men like that.

  308. And we know that group,

  309. that religious crowd,

  310. the elite of the day,

  311. so to speak,

  312. they were very critical of Jesus.

  313. They slandered him

  314. and they were constantly

  315. trying to trap him.

  316. We don't know if Jairus

  317. was like that,

  318. but he would have been

  319. kind of lumped into that crowd.

  320. But as we come here now,

  321. Jairus doesn't care

  322. what anybody thinks.

  323. Because when your little girl

  324. is slipping away,

  325. pride doesn't matter.

  326. Positions don't matter.

  327. Opinions don't matter.

  328. All that mattered to Jairus

  329. was getting to Jesus.

  330. He had heard the stories.

  331. He had maybe seen

  332. some of the miracles

  333. and maybe still trying to process

  334. who is this man?

  335. Who's this guy from Nazareth?

  336. I mean, we all know

  337. nothing good comes from Nazareth.

  338. And Jairus was struggling

  339. and wrapping his mind

  340. around that possibly.

  341. But we see here

  342. that desperation

  343. can really be the starting point

  344. of faith.

  345. that sometimes God allows

  346. very difficult things

  347. in our life

  348. because it reminds us

  349. that we can't do it.

  350. That we don't have

  351. the answers.

  352. And see, Jairus' life

  353. proves that out in this text.

  354. So I want us just to kind of

  355. trace his journey.

  356. And I think there's some

  357. great things that we can take

  358. from this account

  359. and really apply it

  360. to our own lives.

  361. Number one,

  362. I think we see this

  363. in our text,

  364. that desperation

  365. can activate our faith.

  366. The desperation

  367. can activate

  368. our faith.

  369. See, as we mentioned already,

  370. Jairus had the status.

  371. He had the wealth.

  372. But none of that

  373. kept him alive.

  374. And the reason we find him

  375. where he is

  376. is because

  377. that was his only option.

  378. And sometimes

  379. that's maybe what God

  380. has to do to us.

  381. And let's just be real.

  382. Maybe that's why

  383. you're here this morning.

  384. Maybe you're thinking,

  385. and it may not just be

  386. something that everybody knows,

  387. but there's something

  388. in your life

  389. and you're thinking,

  390. Lord, what do I have to do?

  391. Lord, I don't understand.

  392. I need help.

  393. Lord, what direction do I go?

  394. And here's the truth.

  395. We don't like desperate situations.

  396. I don't.

  397. When there's a difficulty

  398. in my life,

  399. when there's a desperation moment,

  400. here's what I want

  401. the Lord to do.

  402. Get rid of it

  403. as fast as possible.

  404. Yeah, okay,

  405. just making sure

  406. we're on the same page.

  407. Nobody says,

  408. you know what,

  409. this is awesome.

  410. Let's just hang out here

  411. for a while.

  412. Nobody says that.

  413. But I think the question

  414. we have to ask ourselves,

  415. kind of bring it

  416. where we live,

  417. is that when trouble

  418. hits our life,

  419. because it will,

  420. I said because it will,

  421. okay,

  422. just making,

  423. I was like,

  424. man,

  425. I want to come live

  426. your life.

  427. I mean,

  428. Jesus told us that.

  429. That we're going

  430. to have difficulties.

  431. We're going to have

  432. struggles.

  433. But when that trouble

  434. comes,

  435. when that desperation

  436. happens,

  437. what gets activated?

  438. Is it fear?

  439. Because sometimes

  440. maybe that's our

  441. natural reaction.

  442. We get a report,

  443. we get,

  444. the company has a layoff

  445. and our immediate reaction

  446. is what am I going to do?

  447. How am I going to move forward?

  448. How am I going to pay the bills?

  449. How's this health situation

  450. going to be?

  451. Maybe it's worry,

  452. maybe it's anger.

  453. Lord,

  454. I've just been serving you,

  455. I've been trying

  456. and I'm coming to church

  457. and I'm doing these things

  458. and you let this happen?

  459. Why?

  460. Lord,

  461. that's not fair.

  462. Look at all these other people.

  463. They're not doing anything

  464. they're supposed to,

  465. but I am.

  466. We get angry at God.

  467. We can get mad.

  468. We can get frustrated.

  469. Sometimes self-pity

  470. gets activated.

  471. And we have to,

  472. we can't live there.

  473. Or maybe it is faith

  474. that gets activated.

  475. Because that's what we see here.

  476. See,

  477. Jairus' desperation,

  478. it activated his faith.

  479. Maybe he was

  480. kind of,

  481. kind of teeter-tottering

  482. of,

  483. I'm not really sure

  484. about this Jesus,

  485. but he came to a realization,

  486. this seems to be the only man

  487. that can do anything about it.

  488. And he ran to Jesus

  489. and he came

  490. and the Bible says

  491. that he fell on his knees

  492. and he begged him,

  493. he said,

  494. Jesus,

  495. you have to come to my house.

  496. You have to come

  497. because my daughter is dying.

  498. I know my number,

  499. I may be way back in line,

  500. but I need you right now.

  501. And that's kind of

  502. where we find him.

  503. Listen,

  504. when we're desperate,

  505. sometimes we think,

  506. well,

  507. I don't want to bother the Lord.

  508. No,

  509. run to him.

  510. Cast all your cares on him.

  511. Why?

  512. Because he cares for you.

  513. Because I know

  514. from my own life

  515. when I have difficulties

  516. and I have problems

  517. and I'm desperate

  518. and I try to fix it myself,

  519. then I have to go to him

  520. and say,

  521. I need you to fix this problem

  522. and I still need help here.

  523. We're not designed

  524. to bear the burden,

  525. to carry the load.

  526. Listen,

  527. you might be trying

  528. to handle it,

  529. but let me just remind you

  530. that Jesus can handle

  531. a broken marriage,

  532. a rebellious teenager,

  533. your anxiety,

  534. your depression,

  535. your disappointment.

  536. Jesus can handle

  537. what you cannot.

  538. And maybe you came here

  539. this morning

  540. and you're just tired

  541. and you're beat down

  542. and you're frustrated.

  543. You know why?

  544. Because you're carrying

  545. things that you cannot.

  546. And you're fearful

  547. and you're worrying

  548. and your anger

  549. is kind of boiling up.

  550. And here's what Jesus

  551. is saying,

  552. bring it to me.

  553. Bring it to my feet.

  554. And we can say those things,

  555. but here's where

  556. it really boils down.

  557. Do you believe that?

  558. Because Jairus did.

  559. He got to the place

  560. where he said,

  561. I believe that Jesus,

  562. I'm not sure

  563. what he's going to do,

  564. but I believe

  565. that he can do something.

  566. And I love this.

  567. I love verse number 42

  568. at the end.

  569. But as he went,

  570. the people thronged him.

  571. In Mark's gospel,

  572. it says that Jesus

  573. was walking alongside

  574. and I just want us

  575. to stop and not read

  576. over that real fast.

  577. What a beautiful picture

  578. that is.

  579. That the Lord

  580. of heaven and earth

  581. is walking side by side

  582. with a desperate father.

  583. Because it reminds us

  584. of this truth

  585. that when we go to God

  586. and we have these things,

  587. he doesn't say,

  588. take a number,

  589. get in line.

  590. No,

  591. he walks with us.

  592. He walks with us

  593. through that valley.

  594. He walks with us

  595. through that trial,

  596. through that health situation.

  597. And just when Jairus thought,

  598. hey,

  599. help's on the way.

  600. He's thinking,

  601. wow,

  602. that went a lot faster

  603. than I thought it was.

  604. I can't believe

  605. I got to the front

  606. of the line that much.

  607. life through

  608. in an interruption.

  609. Don't you love

  610. when life does that?

  611. Don't you love

  612. when they go,

  613. man,

  614. this is all going

  615. according to plan.

  616. And then I always

  617. look over my shoulder

  618. because guess what?

  619. Life usually happens.

  620. We say,

  621. it is what it is.

  622. But here's something

  623. we can learn.

  624. This interruption

  625. teaches us another lesson

  626. about faith.

  627. that while our desperation

  628. can activate our faith,

  629. delay can grow our faith.

  630. I'm just as much like you

  631. in this sense.

  632. I do not like waiting.

  633. Like I will drive

  634. 45 minutes

  635. out of the way

  636. as long as my wheels

  637. are moving

  638. as opposed to

  639. setting in traffic

  640. for the five minute delay.

  641. Can I get an amen

  642. right there?

  643. Yeah.

  644. And then usually

  645. it doesn't work out well

  646. and I come back

  647. and it sends me

  648. back in the line.

  649. And I'm like,

  650. Lord, what are you doing?

  651. He's like,

  652. just stay on the road, man.

  653. But sometimes

  654. we just don't like delay.

  655. I mean,

  656. maybe you or some

  657. of the people

  658. that are behind me

  659. at the light

  660. when it turns green,

  661. point one second

  662. after it turns green,

  663. you're like,

  664. I'm like,

  665. what is going on, man?

  666. I mean,

  667. we just don't like waiting.

  668. And you go to a drive-thru

  669. at a restaurant

  670. and you're thinking,

  671. what's taking so long?

  672. Maybe they're cooking it.

  673. I mean,

  674. that could be an option.

  675. I just,

  676. you know,

  677. I would prefer them

  678. to take a little longer

  679. if it's not cooked

  680. just so my food is ready.

  681. But the simple truth is

  682. we don't like delay.

  683. Whether it's in traffic,

  684. at a stoplight,

  685. at a restaurant,

  686. and we sure don't like it

  687. when it comes to our life.

  688. It sure doesn't,

  689. we sure don't like it

  690. when we're in a trial of faith,

  691. so to speak.

  692. And we're thinking,

  693. Lord,

  694. if you love me,

  695. I think you'd answer

  696. this problem right now.

  697. Lord,

  698. I know that lady

  699. looks like she's got

  700. some problems,

  701. but we got some business to do.

  702. My daughter's really struggling.

  703. Because as he's making

  704. his way to Jairus' house,

  705. a woman saw an opportunity

  706. to get close to Jesus.

  707. See,

  708. just like Jairus had heard

  709. about Jesus

  710. and the miracles,

  711. and he thought,

  712. you know what,

  713. this is the one I need to get to,

  714. so did this lady.

  715. And the Bible tells us

  716. that in verse number 43

  717. that a woman

  718. had an issue of blood

  719. 12 years.

  720. Think about that.

  721. For as long as Jairus' daughter

  722. had been alive,

  723. this woman had been suffering.

  724. She had been struggling.

  725. She had spent

  726. everything she had.

  727. Mark's gospel said

  728. she spent all her living

  729. and was none the better.

  730. In fact,

  731. she grew worse.

  732. So she realizes

  733. that my life is,

  734. it's coming to a place

  735. where it's probably

  736. not going to go well.

  737. And can you imagine

  738. having 12 years

  739. of weakness and pain

  740. and frustration

  741. and disappointment?

  742. Maybe some of you

  743. have walked through

  744. something like that.

  745. But hers wasn't

  746. just physical.

  747. See,

  748. according to Jewish law

  749. and her condition

  750. made her ceremonially unclean

  751. and that's kind of

  752. where you read

  753. in the book of Leviticus

  754. and you're thinking,

  755. what's all this going on?

  756. But it laid out laws

  757. for situations like this

  758. and really what it meant

  759. is she couldn't go

  760. to the synagogue.

  761. This place that Jairus

  762. was in charge of,

  763. this center of community

  764. where she could come

  765. and I love coming in

  766. on a Sunday morning

  767. and feeling the community

  768. and the excitement

  769. and just kind of

  770. the buzz of people talking.

  771. Listen,

  772. she couldn't be around that.

  773. She couldn't really

  774. have friends.

  775. She couldn't participate

  776. in the feast

  777. and the festivals

  778. which would be just

  779. life-giving to these people.

  780. She couldn't embrace

  781. her family.

  782. She couldn't hug them

  783. without making them

  784. unclean.

  785. See,

  786. for 12 long years

  787. she had lived

  788. in isolation

  789. and rejection

  790. and shame.

  791. For 12 years

  792. she was told,

  793. stay away.

  794. She was treated

  795. as an outcast.

  796. 12 years

  797. of hopelessness.

  798. She would have been

  799. kind of on the level

  800. and par with a leper.

  801. Nobody wanted

  802. to be around her.

  803. Nobody really could.

  804. But she heard

  805. about a man named Jesus

  806. and she thought

  807. this might be

  808. my only opportunity.

  809. And her faith

  810. began to stir

  811. and if she thought

  812. if I could just

  813. get to him,

  814. if I could just

  815. even touch

  816. the hem

  817. of his garment,

  818. I know something

  819. would happen.

  820. Talk about faith.

  821. She didn't say

  822. if I could just

  823. get there

  824. and he could talk

  825. to me

  826. and we could

  827. kind of work

  828. through some things

  829. and maybe he could

  830. give me some money

  831. to go to the doctor.

  832. No, her faith

  833. wasn't in his clothes.

  834. It was in Jesus.

  835. She said,

  836. if I can just

  837. get close enough

  838. to Jesus,

  839. I know something

  840. will happen.

  841. And so that's

  842. what she does.

  843. She gets into the crowd

  844. and she gets into

  845. the press

  846. and she kind of

  847. makes her way

  848. through.

  849. I would imagine

  850. just in my own mind

  851. she's kind of

  852. ducking down

  853. so nobody sees her

  854. because they probably

  855. knew who she was.

  856. They said,

  857. hey, you can't be here.

  858. And she reaches out

  859. and she touches

  860. the hem of his garment.

  861. And the Bible says

  862. that immediately

  863. her issue

  864. was resolved.

  865. And that's what

  866. we kind of read

  867. there in verse

  868. number 45.

  869. Jesus stops

  870. the crowd

  871. and says,

  872. hey,

  873. who touched me?

  874. And like Peter

  875. is just,

  876. Peter is a large child.

  877. And I'll talk to Peter

  878. when we get to heaven

  879. because maybe I am too.

  880. But you know,

  881. it's kind of like

  882. when you have a delay,

  883. here's Peter.

  884. Master,

  885. I don't know

  886. if you notice,

  887. there's a lot

  888. of people here.

  889. And I'm pretty sure

  890. everybody in this village

  891. has touched you.

  892. and you want to know

  893. who touched you.

  894. Here's who touched you.

  895. Everybody,

  896. let's keep moving.

  897. I mean,

  898. that's kind of

  899. what's going on.

  900. The disciples were baffled.

  901. They couldn't understand it.

  902. In other words,

  903. they're just saying,

  904. Jesus,

  905. what are we doing here?

  906. But here's what,

  907. Jesus knew it was different.

  908. He knew it was.

  909. He said,

  910. no, no, no,

  911. virtue's gone out of me.

  912. He realized

  913. that somebody came to him

  914. and he knew who it was.

  915. In verse number 47,

  916. the Bible tells us

  917. that she came

  918. before Jesus.

  919. She realized,

  920. well,

  921. I can't keep this

  922. a secret anymore

  923. because I just think

  924. Jesus had that

  925. kind of mindset.

  926. I'm not moving

  927. until I find this out.

  928. And she came

  929. and she fell down

  930. before him

  931. and declared unto him

  932. before all the people

  933. for what cause

  934. she had touched him

  935. and how she was healed

  936. immediately.

  937. And I love

  938. verse number 48.

  939. Sometimes we kind of

  940. just read over that

  941. and we think,

  942. wow,

  943. that's a cool thing.

  944. But Jesus doesn't rebuke her.

  945. He didn't say,

  946. look,

  947. I'm busy.

  948. Have you met Jairus?

  949. He's a wealthy,

  950. powerful man.

  951. He's got a 12-year-old daughter

  952. that's dying.

  953. And you're trying

  954. to stop me?

  955. You're trying to delay this?

  956. No,

  957. he didn't rebuke her.

  958. In fact,

  959. he speaks words to her

  960. that maybe he hadn't heard

  961. in a long,

  962. long time.

  963. In fact,

  964. it's the only time

  965. Jesus uses this word

  966. in the Gospels.

  967. He says,

  968. daughter.

  969. Somebody that had lived

  970. in isolation.

  971. Somebody that kind of

  972. had just been left

  973. to the side

  974. and saying,

  975. well,

  976. she's a hopeless cause.

  977. No,

  978. after 12 years of rejection,

  979. she belonged again.

  980. He said,

  981. daughter,

  982. be of good comfort.

  983. She had a reason

  984. to rejoice.

  985. Why?

  986. Here's why.

  987. Thy faith

  988. hath made thee whole.

  989. It wasn't that she

  990. touched the garment.

  991. It's that she believed.

  992. She had faith

  993. that just reaching out.

  994. We kind of remember

  995. the story of the mustard seed.

  996. Listen,

  997. she had mustard seed faith.

  998. If I can just reach out,

  999. if I can just touch him,

  1000. everything's going to change.

1001. And he told her this,

  1002. go in peace.

1003. That she had that wholeness again.

  1004. That she could go

1005. and she could live her life.

  1006. And that's kind of

1007. where it meets us again.

1008. The same way with Jairus

  1009. that maybe you're here

  1010. and you've been carrying

  1011. a burden for years.

  1012. Here's the great news.

  1013. Jesus can lift that.

1014. It's not your burden to bear.

  1015. Maybe you've been isolated

  1016. by shame.

  1017. Here's the great news.

  1018. Jesus can restore you.

  1019. Maybe you've spent everything

1020. looking for answers in the world.

  1021. You've tried this

1022. and you've tried this diet

1023. and you've tried to be

  1024. a better person

1025. and turn over a new leaf.

  1026. Listen,

  1027. here's the truth.

  1028. Miss Tiffany sang

1029. a great song about it.

  1030. Jesus has it.

1031. When we come to Jesus,

  1032. we find it all.

  1033. Everything you're looking for

  1034. is in Christ.

  1035. Peace and joy

  1036. and love and hope.

  1037. All of those things

  1038. are found in him.

  1039. Maybe you feel unclean,

  1040. unworthy,

  1041. unwanted

1042. and here's what God calls us.

  1043. Daughter.

  1044. Son.

  1045. That's what he's doing.

  1046. That's his mission.

  1047. His mission wasn't come

1048. to heal a bunch of people

  1049. and feed their bellies.

  1050. He came to seek

  1051. and to save

  1052. that which was lost.

1053. He came to give us

1054. a seat at his table

  1055. and adopt us

  1056. into his family

1057. and that's what he reminds us

  1058. and here's the connection.

  1059. While Jairus' faith

1060. was being tested by delay,

  1061. this woman was

  1062. being rewarded

  1063. with deliverance.

  1064. See, Jesus wasn't distracted.

  1065. He was deliberate.

  1066. He's always on mission.

  1067. He healed her publicly.

  1068. I believe so Jairus

  1069. and we too

  1070. would see

1071. that he's never too busy,

  1072. he's never too late

1073. and he's never too weak

1074. to meet you where you are.

  1075. Because sometimes

1076. we can get this idea,

  1077. well,

1078. I think God can do it for them.

  1079. But I'm not sure

1080. God wants to do that for me.

  1081. No, he does.

1082. He wants to do that for you.

  1083. That's why he came.

  1084. But sometimes

  1085. the reality is

  1086. that delays

  1087. give way to something

  1088. even harder to face,

  1089. disappointment.

  1090. Because sometimes

  1091. it just feels like

  1092. we're just waiting

  1093. and waiting

  1094. and it feels,

  1095. well, it already passed.

  1096. Maybe you're praying

  1097. for something.

  1098. Maybe it seems

  1099. too far gone

  1100. and you're thinking,

1101. well, what can I do?

  1102. We notice this here

  1103. in our text,

  1104. number three,

  1105. that disappointment

  1106. can replace our faith.

  1107. I just picture Jairus

  1108. just standing there,

  1109. you know,

  1110. trying to, you know,

  1111. keep it all together

  1112. and he's

  1113. a little agitated.

  1114. He's saying,

  1115. okay,

  1116. can we heal faster?

  1117. Can we do something?

  1118. Verse 49,

  1119. when he yet spake,

  1120. there cometh one

  1121. from the ruler

  1122. of the synagogue's house

  1123. saying to him,

  1124. my daughter is dead.

  1125. Trouble not the master.

  1126. Talk about devastating.

  1127. I mean,

  1128. Jairus came with faith

  1129. and he bowed down

1130. and he got on his knees

1131. and he begged Jesus to come

  1132. and Jesus said,

  1133. let's go.

  1134. And I can imagine

  1135. maybe just the hope

  1136. that was there,

  1137. still struggling,

  1138. knowing his daughter

  1139. is on her death,

  1140. but knowing,

  1141. hey,

  1142. something's going to happen.

1143. And Jesus is on the way.

  1144. But now we see

  1145. that Jairus' greatest fear

  1146. had become reality.

1147. But I love Jesus' response

  1148. in verse 50

  1149. because it reminds us

  1150. that Jesus already knows

  1151. what's going on.

1152. That Jesus knows our heart.

1153. He knows what we're thinking.

1154. And as the devastating news came,

1155. he just looks at Jairus

  1156. and says,

  1157. fear not.

  1158. Only belief.

  1159. He met Jairus

  1160. where he was

  1161. and he understood this,

  1162. Jairus' faith

1163. is about to be replaced

  1164. with fear.

  1165. And Jesus reminded him

  1166. of this,

  1167. I can handle this.

1168. You came to the right source.

  1169. Because sometimes

  1170. when delay comes

  1171. and disappointment comes,

  1172. we leave the source

  1173. where it's supposed

  1174. to be at Christ

1175. and we try to handle it ourselves.

1176. And he's just reminding Jairus,

  1177. no, you're right

  1178. where you are.

  1179. You're right

1180. where you need to be.

  1181. And that's what Jesus

  1182. tells us

  1183. in our disappointment,

  1184. in our worries,

  1185. in our desperation.

  1186. He tells us this,

  1187. keep believing.

  1188. Keep believing

  1189. when the sickness comes,

  1190. when your prayers

  1191. seem to go unanswered.

  1192. I'd imagine

1193. in a crowd this size

  1194. somebody's been praying

  1195. for something

  1196. for a long,

  1197. long time.

  1198. Maybe it's a loved one

1199. that doesn't know the Lord.

  1200. Or maybe it's a son

  1201. or a daughter

1202. that's kind of fallen away.

1203. Maybe it is a health situation.

  1204. You know what,

1205. you know what Jesus reminds us?

  1206. Keep praying,

  1207. keep believing

  1208. when you're tempted

  1209. to give up,

  1210. when it feels like

  1211. the bottom's fallen out.

  1212. Just keep believing.

  1213. Because Jesus

  1214. knows what he's doing.

  1215. His time schedule

  1216. is a little different

  1217. than ours.

  1218. It's a little different

  1219. how he operates.

  1220. Because the reality is,

1221. and we don't have to

  1222. gloss over and act

  1223. like it's not true,

  1224. but life is full

  1225. of disappointments.

  1226. Anybody disappointed

  1227. this week?

  1228. How many cowboy fans

  1229. in here?

  1230. Keep believing.

  1231. Okay,

  1232. I'm not sure

  1233. that applies,

  1234. but we just face

  1235. disappointments.

  1236. Some are silly,

1237. but on a serious note,

  1238. I bet somebody

  1239. was disappointed

  1240. this week.

  1241. Thinking,

  1242. why?

  1243. I've been praying

  1244. for this

1245. and this is what happened?

1246. We have to be careful.

  1247. That disappointment

  1248. doesn't replace

  1249. our faith.

  1250. Because here's what

  1251. Jesus is saying

  1252. to you this morning.

  1253. Fear not,

  1254. just believe.

  1255. I'm still working

  1256. in your life.

  1257. I know you look

  1258. at all the situations

  1259. and you think,

  1260. Lord,

1261. have you taken a break?

  1262. Have you checked out?

  1263. No,

  1264. he hasn't.

  1265. And see,

  1266. even when we push

  1267. through our disappointment,

  1268. there's still another obstacle

  1269. that many times comes

  1270. in situations like this.

  1271. Here's what it is.

  1272. Doubt.

  1273. Doubt.

  1274. You know what doubt

  1275. can do?

  1276. It can restrict

  1277. our faith.

  1278. Verse number 52.

1279. So he makes it there.

  1280. Verse 51,

  1281. he brings Peter,

  1282. James,

  1283. and John,

  1284. the inner circle,

1285. the mother and the father.

  1286. He gets there

  1287. and all wept

  1288. and bewailed her.

  1289. But he said,

  1290. weep not.

  1291. She's not dead,

  1292. but sleepeth.

  1293. So these people

  1294. most likely

  1295. were professional mourners.

  1296. See,

  1297. in this culture,

  1298. what they would do

  1299. is,

  1300. especially wealthier people,

  1301. they would hire people

1302. to come to the house

  1303. and weep

  1304. and wail

  1305. and kind of make

  1306. a big ado

  1307. about all this.

  1308. And these were,

  1309. these were professionals.

  1310. They had seen

  1311. death once or twice.

  1312. They knew,

  1313. hey,

  1314. I'm sorry,

  1315. but she's,

  1316. she's,

  1317. she's not here anymore.

  1318. Well,

  1319. Jesus shows up.

  1320. He said,

  1321. hey,

  1322. why is everybody crying?

  1323. She's not dead.

  1324. She's just sleeping.

  1325. And the Bible says

  1326. that they laughed him

  1327. to scorn.

  1328. These mourners quickly,

  1329. I mean,

1330. they can turn it off

  1331. and off,

  1332. professionals.

1333. And they just start laughing.

  1334. Like,

  1335. what,

1336. what is this guy doing?

  1337. The Bible says,

  1338. I love,

  1339. I love verse number 54.

1340. And he put them all out.

  1341. He said,

  1342. get out of here.

  1343. You know,

1344. you know what he's saying?

1345. Doubt wasn't going to dictate

  1346. what happened next.

1347. He had already looked Jairus

1348. in the eyes and said,

  1349. fear not,

  1350. only believe.

1351. And I think we can tell

  1352. from the text,

  1353. Jairus was still holding

  1354. on to that.

  1355. He was struggling,

  1356. but he was surrounded

  1357. by people that said,

  1358. hey,

1359. this is never going to happen.

1360. I've seen this once before.

  1361. I mean,

1362. this is my job after all.

  1363. She's dead.

1364. Jesus put them all out.

  1365. And in verse 54

  1366. and verse 55,

1367. he went into the room.

  1368. He took the,

1369. the young girl by the hand

  1370. and he said,

  1371. maid,

  1372. arise.

1373. He didn't do all these

  1374. crazy things.

  1375. He just spoke.

  1376. Luke.

  1377. Many of the miracles,

1378. we say this all the time,

  1379. Jesus speaks.

  1380. Why?

1381. Because he's just reminding us

  1382. who he is.

1383. Just like Luke is reminding us

  1384. that he's God,

1385. he's going all the way back

  1386. to the beginning

  1387. where he said,

  1388. let there be.

  1389. That everything we know,

1390. he spoke it into existence.

  1391. And he's reminding us

1392. that that is who he is.

1393. That even the scariest thing

1394. that we face as human beings,

  1395. death,

1396. he just speaks to it

  1397. and it obeys.

1398. It doesn't matter what it is.

  1399. Jesus can handle it.

1400. And I love how Luke

  1401. kind of put that,

  1402. verse 56,

1403. and the parents were astonished.

  1404. No kidding.

  1405. See,

  1406. here's the journey

  1407. of Jairus' faith.

  1408. And maybe it

1409. kind of relates to you.

  1410. Maybe it's in a situation

  1411. you're walking through.

  1412. Maybe you are desperate.

  1413. Don't let desperation

1414. turn you the wrong direction.

1415. Let it activate your faith.

  1416. If you've got

  1417. a desperate situation,

1418. you know what you need

  1419. to do this morning?

  1420. Run to Jesus.

  1421. It doesn't matter

1422. who you think you are

1423. and what position you hold.

  1424. No, no.

  1425. You need Jesus.

  1426. He's the only one

  1427. that can do anything.

  1428. Without him,

  1429. the Bible tells us,

  1430. we can do nothing.

1431. Maybe you're here this morning

  1432. and you're walking

  1433. through a delay.

  1434. And you're thinking,

1435. Lord, what are you doing?

  1436. I came to you.

1437. I came to this altar.

1438. I bowed by my bedside.

  1439. I'm reading my Bible.

1440. I'm doing all these things.

  1441. And this,

  1442. I'm just stuck?

  1443. The problem's just

1444. going to keep going on.

1445. Or maybe we feel like

1446. the problem's too far gone.

  1447. Listen,

  1448. delay.

1449. Instead of being frustrated by it,

1450. let it grow your faith.

  1451. Because Jesus comes alongside

  1452. and says,

  1453. listen,

  1454. don't worry.

  1455. Just believe.

1456. Maybe some of you are here

  1457. and disappointment

  1458. is threatening your faith.

1459. Well, if this is what God does,

1460. I don't want any part of that.

  1461. It's very easy sometimes

1462. to get in a situation

  1463. and say,

1464. well, this is how it's going to be.

  1465. I'll just walk away.

1466. Because if God loved me,

1467. He wouldn't let this happen.

  1468. But you realize

1469. that everything in our life

  1470. God is using

  1471. for our good

  1472. and for His glory.

  1473. The Bible tells us

1474. that all things work together

  1475. for good

1476. to them that love God.

  1477. Number one,

  1478. you have to know

1479. the Lord is your Savior.

1480. To them that love God

  1481. and are called

  1482. according to His purpose.

1483. But then the very next verse,

  1484. Paul reminds us

  1485. in Romans 8, 29,

  1486. that all these things,

  1487. here's the goal,

1488. that we would be conformed

  1489. to the image

  1490. of His dear Son.

  1491. Sometimes devastation comes

1492. not because God is mean,

1493. it's because He loves you so much

1494. that He wants to make you

  1495. more like Jesus.

  1496. Because Jesus went through

  1497. some pretty devastating things.

  1498. Some pretty great disappointments.

1499. Some doubt that tried to creep in.

  1500. That He was tempted

1501. at all points like we were

  1502. yet without sin.

1503. betrayed by ones He loved,

  1504. forsaken.

1505. But we do notice this

  1506. about Jairus.

  1507. And it reminds us

1508. that we can do it too.

1509. That through all the things

  1510. He faced,

  1511. He kept believing.

1512. And guess what He saw?

  1513. Jesus come through.

1514. See, when you keep believing,

  1515. God keeps working.

1516. He wants to be working

  1517. in your life.

  1518. And He does,

  1519. but sometimes we want

1520. to walk away from the work.

1521. We get right up to it

  1522. and the delay happens.

1523. We try it for a little bit

  1524. and we say,

1525. well, this is not really working

  1526. how I thought.

  1527. I'm gone.

  1528. We get past that,

  1529. the disappointments,

1530. and it's not that we

1531. turn our back on God.

1532. You can still come to church

  1533. every single time

  1534. the doors are open

  1535. and be just disappointed

  1536. with God.

1537. God, why'd you let this

  1538. happen in my life?

  1539. Remember the DMV?

  1540. You sat there forever

  1541. holding ticket Z198,

  1542. wondering if your turn

  1543. will ever come.

  1544. You're feeling like

  1545. nothing's happening,

  1546. like you've been forgotten.

1547. Maybe that's how Jairus felt.

1548. Maybe that's how the woman

1549. with the issue of blood felt.

  1550. Maybe it seemed that

1551. God was never going to call

  1552. their number.

1553. But I want to remind you of this,

  1554. that Jesus never misses

  1555. the number.

1556. Even when it feels like

  1557. he's late,

1558. you may have heard of a man

  1559. named Lazarus.

  1560. He's kind of late.

  1561. Four days late

  1562. is what they thought.

1563. I love the old song,

1564. no, he was right on time.

  1565. Because sometimes

1566. God allows us to go

  1567. through things

  1568. not just for us.

  1569. Because guess what?

1570. There was a whole crowd

1571. that saw this woman heal.

  1572. Peter, James, and John,

  1573. they're still kind of

  1574. trying to figure out

  1575. all these things

1576. and Jesus brought them in.

1577. These were going to be

  1578. the leaders,

  1579. especially Peter,

  1580. moving forward.

  1581. And they just,

1582. he wanted to show them,

1583. listen, I can do this.

  1584. I'm capable of that.

1585. That Jesus is never too late.

  1586. He's never too busy.

  1587. He's never too weak.

  1588. See, when everyone

  1589. else thought the line

  1590. was closed

  1591. for this little girl,

  1592. Jesus walked in

  1593. and it changed everything.

  1594. See, maybe you've stopped

  1595. believing because God

  1596. is delaying.

  1597. Maybe disappointment

  1598. has replaced your faith

  1599. with fear.

1600. Maybe doubt has crept in

1601. and it's really taking over.

  1602. Here's the good news.

  1603. You don't need

  1604. a perfect faith.

  1605. You need faith

  1606. in a perfect Savior.

1607. And His name is Jesus.

  1608. See, that's what Luke's

  1609. showing us here

  1610. in chapter number 8.

1611. So I'm challenging you today

  1612. the same challenge

  1613. that Jesus gives.

  1614. Fear not,

  1615. believe only.

  1616. I don't have to know

  1617. your situation,

  1618. but He does.

1619. And these are the words

  1620. that He speaks.

  1621. And He just wants

  1622. to remind us

  1623. when we keep believing,

  1624. when we keep trusting,

  1625. when we keep placing

  1626. our faith in Him,

  1627. He will keep working.

  1628. That's what He does.

  1629. That's who He is.

  1630. This is our God.

1631. Praise the Lord for that.
