  1. Well, any of you have a Bible, it's Luke chapter number 9.

  2. Luke chapter number 9, if you are able to stand for the reading of God's Word, I ask that you would.

  3. Luke chapter 9, if there is any children's church in here, 1st through 5th grade, they can go ahead and slip out.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  4. Children's church is already back there.

  5. But it is wonderful to be in the Lord's house.

  6. I'm thankful that love went deeper.

  7. I'm thankful that He knew me, and yet He loves me.

  8. That gets to me every single time.

  9. And I love the burden that Brother Nathaniel shared.

  10. And I encourage you to be back tonight as He preaches and just lays some of that out a little bit more.

  11. But God has called us all to be part of the mission.

  12. And we're going through the book of Luke right now, Jesus and His mission.

  13. And He's walking here on this earth to show us how to live, how to love.

  14. He's going to give His life for us so that we can take that message to others as well.

  15. So if you found your place there in Luke chapter 9, we're going to begin reading in verse 28 where the Bible says this.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  16. And it came to pass, about in eight days after these sayings,

  17. these sayings is when Peter said,

  18. Thou art the Christ, and then Jesus said,

  19. Hey, this is what it looks like to be a follower.

  20. You have to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me.

  21. And they're kind of reeling from all of these things and trying to figure out what's going on.

  22. And so after these sayings, He took Peter and John and James and went into a mountain to pray.

  23. And as He prayed, the fashion of His countenance was altered, and His raiment was white and glycery.

  24. And behold, there talked with Him two men, which were Moses and Elias, or Elijah,

  25. who appeared in glory and spake of His decease, which He should accomplish at Jerusalem.

  26. But when Peter and they that were with Him were heavy with sleep,

  27. Peter always is taking a nap, it seems like.

  28. He wakes up and he's thinking, What is going on here?

  29. And the heavy was sleeping.

  30. When they awake, they saw His glory and the two men that stood with Him.

  31. And it came to pass, as they departed from Him,

  32. Peter said unto Him, Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here.

  33. Let us make three tabernacles, one for thee and one for Moses and one for Elias,

  34. not knowing what He said.

  35. Verse 34,

  36. While He thus spake, there came a cloud and overshadowed them,

  37. and they feared as they entered into the cloud.

  38. And there came a voice out of the cloud saying,

  39. This is my beloved Son, hear Him.

  40. And when the voice was passed, Jesus was found alone.

  41. And they kept it close and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

  42. This morning I want to preach a message entitled this,

  43. A Glimpse of Glory.

  44. They've had a really rough kind of week, and Jesus knew that.

  45. But He wanted to show them that, hey, this suffering talk,

  46. this taking up your cross, me dying and leaving,

  47. it's not the end of the story.

  48. He wanted to show them a little bit of, hey, what's coming?

  49. A coming attraction, so to speak.

  50. So I think it's going to be a help to us this morning.

  51. Let's go to Him in prayer, and then we'll dive right in.

  52. Father, thank You for this opportunity to be in Your house.

  53. Lord, thank You for just the beautiful songs that we were able to sing,

  54. that we heard sung this morning,

  55. that remind us of Your love for us.

  56. And we see it even here in our text.

  57. Lord, that You're showing us who You really are.

  58. Lord, that's what I ask this morning,

  59. that You would make that known to every single person under the sound of my voice.

  60. That there's someone that needs to know You as their Savior,

  61. that today would be that day.

  62. For those that need to be encouraged,

  63. and as they're walking maybe a difficult road,

  64. and it feels like just trials and suffering,

  65. and all the things that this world brings,

  66. Lord, to remind us that this world is not our home.

  67. That we're just passing through,

  68. and there is a coming glory.

  69. Lord, I pray You be with me now.

  70. Empty me of self.

  71. Fill me with Your Spirit,

  72. that I might be a help to Your people.

  73. In Christ's name, amen.

  74. Thank You so much for standing.

  75. You may be seated.

  76. Have you ever wished you could just freeze time?

  77. You know, always superhero powers.

  78. I wish I could fly.

  79. I wish I could run fast.

  80. I wish I could jump, dunk.

  81. You know, that whole little thing at the beginning,

  82. that was to help you dunk a basketball.

  83. That's what it's for.

  84. So maybe some of you boys can dunk a basketball one of these days.

  85. But you know, there's times in these superpowers,

  86. like, man, I'd love to freeze time.

  87. Maybe there's moments in your life,

  88. and I remember maybe when Mackenzie was born,

  89. our firstborn, and I held her,

  90. I thought, wow.

  91. First I thought, how in the world am I going to do this?

  92. Still trying to figure that out 14 years later.

  93. But when you have those moments,

  94. you just kind of want to freeze the time.

  95. Maybe you've been somewhere,

  96. you've been on a vacation,

  97. been at a beautiful sight in the world,

  98. and you just kind of want to,

  99. you're overwhelmed by this breathtaking view,

  100. and you just want to kind of pause time

  101. and just take it all in.

  102. Maybe, rarely,

  103. you're sitting around the dinner table with your family,

  104. everybody's getting along,

  105. and you think, man, if I could just freeze this.

  106. We all like each other,

  107. we all agree on the meal.

  108. This is a moment in history.

  109. You know, there's times like that in our life

  110. where we just want to push the pause button,

  111. just kind of hang out right there.

  112. And we've all had moments like that,

  113. moments we wish we could just bottle up

  114. and never lose.

  115. And as we come into our text today

  116. in the Gospel of Luke,

  117. we see that Peter's having kind of

  118. one of those moments.

  119. Maybe you've heard these verses,

  120. it's the Mount of Transfiguration.

  121. And after a really tough week

  122. and some really tough things

  123. that the disciples had to hear,

  124. and they're trying to kind of ingest

  125. and figure out what it means in their own life,

  126. Jesus takes them up to a mountain,

  127. and he is transformed.

  128. It's not, he didn't become a different person,

  129. he kind of just lifted the veil a little bit,

  130. just to let him see who he really was.

  131. And they began to get that glimpse of him,

  132. and Peter's there, and he wakes up,

  133. and he sees what's going on,

  134. and in typical Peter fashion,

  135. he doesn't know what to do,

  136. so he just speaks.

  137. You know people like that?

  138. You're thinking, it'd be better

  139. if you just didn't say anything at all.

  140. And Peter says, man, you know what?

  141. Jesus, let's just freeze time right here.

  142. Hey, you remember all that suffering talk?

  143. Forget about that.

  144. Let's just camp out right here for a while.

  145. Let's just stay on top of this mountain.

  146. But God had a different plan.

  147. Jesus didn't bring Peter, James, and John

  148. up to the top of the mountain

  149. for them to live there.

  150. This wasn't supposed to be a permanent situation.

  151. Here's really what it helps us to do.

  152. It helped them,

  153. and it's going to help us in our own life.

  154. This mountaintop was meant to prepare them

  155. for the valleys that were coming.

  156. Because I don't know if you found this out in life yet,

  157. there are some mountaintop experiences,

  158. but there are some deep valleys as well.

  159. And we can walk through the valley of the shadow of death.

  160. And we can fear no evil.

  161. Why?

  162. Because Jesus is with us,

  163. and he was reminding his disciples both then

  164. and now that the same is true.

  165. And I really believe when we come to this passage

  166. that that's what it's really all about.

  167. That when life is hard,

  168. when discipleship is costly,

  169. when following feels like a struggle,

  170. we need moments to see his glory,

  171. to see who he really is,

  172. to see who we really are following.

  173. And what it does,

  174. it strengthens us for the road ahead.

  175. That's what the transfiguration is.

  176. This isn't just some light show.

  177. Hey man, this is a cool little side.

  178. Hey, there's some hard things,

  179. and we're going to see when he comes down the mountain

  180. there's some hard things.

  181. So let's just kind of hang out for a minute.

  182. No, it's much more than that.

  183. See, last week we saw in verse 22

  184. that Jesus said,

  185. here's what's going to happen guys.

  186. I'm going to suffer many things,

  187. and I'm going to be rejected by the chief priest,

  188. and they're going to kill me.

  189. Now we mentioned this.

  190. Nobody killed him.

  191. He laid down his life.

  192. But he said,

  193. this is what's going to happen.

  194. This is where this is heading.

  195. And then he added,

  196. if that wasn't hard enough for them to handle,

  197. and if you want to follow after me,

  198. you're going to sign up for the very same things.

  199. That if any man come after me,

  200. let him deny himself,

  201. and take up his cross daily and follow.

  202. And I think you got the sense last week,

  203. if you were here,

  204. those are heavy words.

  205. They were thinking crowns,

  206. and they were thinking power,

  207. and they were thinking prestige,

  208. and they were thinking,

  209. hey man, we're on the ground floor

  210. of this whole Messiah thing.

  211. They didn't see a cross.

  212. They didn't see suffering.

  213. They didn't see difficulties in the future.

  214. And for about a week,

  215. we see that they're trying to process this.

  216. This is not what they signed up for.

  217. You ever signed up for something?

  218. Thinking, nope,

  219. this is not what I signed up for.

  220. That was basically me,

  221. K through 12th grade.

  222. I'm like,

  223. this is not what I signed up for.

  224. Especially in middle school,

  225. they just took my recess away.

  226. I'm like,

  227. how am I supposed to live?

  228. I mean,

  229. life is recess.

  230. But no doubt the disciples

  231. were beginning to really feel the weight.

  232. I mean,

  233. these were men that had left everything.

  234. They had left their nets.

  235. They had left their jobs.

  236. They had left their professions.

  237. They had forsaken all to follow Christ.

  238. And now it seems like,

  239. this is not good.

  240. And Jesus knew it.

  241. Let me remind you,

  242. Jesus always knows.

  243. I don't know what you're walking through.

  244. I don't know the difficulties

  245. you might be facing in your life right now

  246. and the struggles,

  247. but He knows.

  248. And if anything this morning,

  249. I just want you to see

  250. just a glimpse

  251. of who Jesus really is.

  252. because when we get

  253. a good picture of that,

  254. it changes how we live our life.

  255. So He took Peter

  256. and He took James

  257. and He took John up this mountain.

  258. Why?

  259. Because He was preparing them

  260. for what was to come.

  261. Listen,

  262. Jesus cares so much

  263. about His followers

  264. and His disciples.

  265. He doesn't leave us in the dark.

  266. No,

  267. He promises never to leave us

  268. nor to forsake us.

  269. And He wanted them

  270. to really see

  271. who He was.

  272. Man,

  273. they had seen Him

  274. feed a bunch of people.

  275. That's cool.

  276. They had seen Him

  277. heal some people.

  278. I mean,

  279. that's amazing.

  280. When they thought

  281. they were going under

  282. in the boat,

  283. He just calmed the wind.

  284. Man,

  285. that's pretty awesome.

  286. And they were beginning

  287. to kind of get these puzzle pieces

  288. of who Jesus was

  289. and kind of

  290. it's starting to come into view.

  291. But now He's going to

  292. pull the veil back

  293. and show them really

  294. who He is.

  295. That's the first thing

  296. that I want us to see

  297. this morning.

  298. Number one is

  299. we need to look

  300. at the glory

  301. of the Son of God.

  302. In verse number 29,

  303. the Bible reminds us

  304. that He came into

  305. this mountain to pray

  306. and as He prayed,

  307. the fashion of His countenance

  308. was altered

  309. and His raiment

  310. was white and glycerine.

  311. Matthew's account,

  312. Matthew 17,

  313. tells us that His face

  314. shone as bright

  315. as the noonday sun.

  316. Think about it like this.

  317. It's so bright.

  318. I mean,

  319. when the disciples are there,

  320. they're looking like that.

  321. Kind of like you were

  322. last night

  323. when you opened the fridge

  324. at midnight.

  325. You know,

  326. trying to find something

  327. in there.

  328. I mean,

  329. a blinding light.

  330. It's going to just,

  331. you can't even fathom it.

  332. The Bible kind of describes

  333. His clothes

  334. in multiple accounts.

  335. They're dazzling

  336. and it's like lightning

  337. was kind of woven

  338. into the fabric.

  339. I know that's kind of crazy

  340. but that's just how

  341. I read the Bible.

  342. I mean,

  343. they can't even look upon Him.

  344. Peter's thinking,

  345. what is going on?

  346. They're sleeping.

  347. Every time they get

  348. an opportunity,

  349. they always seem

  350. to fall asleep

  351. in the most important moments.

  352. But simply put,

  353. it was very evident

  354. when they came to,

  355. when the disciples woke up,

  356. that this was no ordinary man.

  357. This wasn't just some rabbi

  358. that was a really good teacher.

  359. This wasn't just some

  360. miracle worker

  361. from Nazareth.

  362. No,

  363. they're beginning to realize

  364. who He truly is

  365. and Peter already said,

  366. thou art the Christ.

  367. And now Jesus is saying,

  368. I am.

  369. You can see me

  370. for who I really am.

  371. And God is pulling back

  372. the veil of His humanity

  373. and He's revealing

  374. that He is glorious

  375. and He's divine

  376. and He's eternal.

  377. And this isn't the first time

  378. God's glory has shown up

  379. in Scripture like this.

  380. We see Moses,

  381. when you study

  382. the life of Moses,

  383. He goes up into Mount Sinai

  384. and He's in the presence

  385. of God for those 40 days

  386. and when He comes down

  387. from the mountain,

  388. He's been in the presence

  389. of God so long,

  390. He had to wear a veil

  391. on His face

  392. because His own face

  393. was shining.

  394. And that was just

  395. a reflection of God's glory.

  396. It was just a fading afterglow.

  397. When you study Solomon's temple

  398. and Solomon begins to pray

  399. to dedicate the temple,

  400. this cloud comes down,

  401. the glory of God,

  402. the Shekinah glory

  403. is what we call it

  404. in Scripture.

  405. It comes down

  406. and it fills the whole house.

  407. And Israel is like,

  408. whoa, what is going on here?

  409. Maybe you know

  410. the life of the Apostle Paul.

  411. He was on the road to Damascus.

  412. He was going to arrest Christians

  413. and to get rid of them

  414. and Jesus of Nazareth showed up,

  415. the risen Savior.

  416. And the Bible says

  417. that He's shown

  418. bright as the noonday sun.

  419. It blinded Paul

  420. and it changed his life.

  421. But here in our text this morning,

  422. the disciples are not seeing

  423. a reflection or a symbol

  424. or a bright light.

  425. They are seeing Jesus

  426. for who He truly is.

  427. They were seeing

  428. the very source of glory.

  429. See, Jesus doesn't borrow it

  430. from anybody.

  431. No, He is.

  432. You see in the end

  433. that there's going to be

  434. no need for the sun

  435. because He's going to be

  436. in the city.

  437. He is the light

  438. that we are searching for.

  439. And in verse 30,

  440. we see He's not alone,

  441. that He's having

  442. this conversation.

  443. They wake up

  444. and the disciples

  445. start looking and say,

  446. whoa, who are those people?

  447. And they had a little name tag.

  448. It said, hello, I'm Moses.

  449. Hello, I'm Elijah.

  450. I don't know how it was,

  451. but they realized real quickly

  452. who this was.

  453. And the Bible,

  454. that's what it says

  455. in verse number 30,

  456. Behold, there talked with Him

  457. two men which were Moses

  458. and Elias.

  459. See, Moses represented the law.

  460. Moses was their hero.

  461. Abraham and Moses,

  462. these men of the Mount Rushmore,

  463. so to speak, of Israel,

  464. he was the great deliverer.

  465. And I'm sure many of you

  466. are familiar with the Exodus

  467. and how God used this man,

  468. Moses, to deliver his people

  469. out of bondage in Egypt.

  470. He was the one

  471. that God gave the commandments

  472. through and the tabernacle

  473. and the priesthood

  474. and the sacrifices.

  475. And you think,

  476. what was all that about?

  477. Here's what it was about.

  478. It was about pointing forward

  479. to Jesus.

  480. That the Old Testament

  481. is just a shadow

  482. of things to come.

  483. But Jesus is the fulfillment

  484. of that and He is

  485. the true deliverer

  486. and He is the final sacrifice.

  487. And He's there

  488. with Elijah the prophet.

  489. I mean, you talk about

  490. a prophet that was bold,

  491. a prophet that wasn't afraid

  492. to speak the truth.

  493. This was the man

  494. that rolled right up

  495. into the most wicked king

  496. in Israel

  497. and his wife Jezebel

  498. and said,

  499. hey, God said

  500. it's not going to rain.

  501. And Elijah was that kind

  502. of prophet

  503. that stood for the Lord

  504. and called Israel back

  505. in a time of great apostasy.

  506. And really,

  507. the prophets in general,

  508. as a whole,

  509. proclaimed the hope

  510. of a coming Messiah.

  511. Proclaimed the hope

  512. that God would restore

  513. His people

  514. and establish

  515. His kingdom.

  516. So we see these two men here.

  517. Why?

  518. Well, I think because together

  519. the law and the prophets,

  520. they summed up

  521. the entire Old Testament

  522. revelation.

  523. And here's what the Old Testament

  524. is saying.

  525. He's coming.

  526. The Messiah is coming.

  527. The Savior of the world

  528. is coming.

  529. Behold,

  530. a virgin shall conceive

  531. and you shall call

  532. His name

  533. Emmanuel,

  534. God with us.

  535. and they're here

  536. not as equals

  537. with Jesus

  538. but bearing witness

  539. that He is the one

  540. that the law

  541. and the prophets

  542. were pointing to.

  543. That is the idea.

  544. Well, what are they

  545. talking about?

  546. Verse 31.

  547. Who appeared in glory

  548. and spake

  549. of His decease

  550. which He should accomplish

  551. at Jerusalem?

  552. We're going to come back.

  553. We're going to circle back around here

  554. in just a minute to that.

  555. But here's what

  556. they're talking about.

  557. What's going to happen

  558. when He dies?

  559. In the midst

  560. of all the glory

  561. of God,

  562. in the midst

  563. of this

  564. great transfiguration,

  565. here's where

  566. Jesus' focus was.

  567. The cross.

  568. It reminds us

  569. that the song

  570. of the Jerusalem

  571. love went deeper.

  572. That even when

  573. everything was pointing

  574. to Him

  575. and they're beginning

  576. to realize

  577. that He is God

  578. in the flesh,

  579. true glory

  580. always centers

  581. on Christ

  582. and His finished work

  583. on the cross of Calvary.

  584. That's where glory

  585. is found.

  586. See,

  587. Peter and James

  588. and John,

  589. they thought it was found

  590. in prestige

  591. and in power

  592. and making Israel

  593. great again.

  594. That's what they were

  595. looking for.

  596. You look at the

  597. triumphant entry

  598. of Christ,

  599. they thought,

  600. you know what?

  601. They're going to kick

  602. all the Romans out

  603. and we're going to be

  604. where we should be.

  605. No,

  606. the triumphant entry

  607. was this,

  608. that He was coming

  609. to die.

  610. And that's what

  611. Moses and Elijah

  612. are talking about

  613. with Him.

  614. That's their conversation.

  615. Let me just remind you,

  616. every other glory fades.

  617. We can search

  618. for glory

  619. in our own world,

  620. but careers

  621. can vanish,

  622. reputations

  623. can be ruined,

  624. possessions wear out,

  625. break down,

  626. left behind,

  627. but the glory

  628. of Jesus

  629. never fades.

  630. And the same

  631. Christ who shone

  632. so brightly

  633. on this mountain,

  634. He went down

  635. into the valley

  636. and carried

  637. across up

  638. Mount Calvary

  639. and died there

  640. for our sins.

  641. But that wasn't

  642. the end of the story

  643. either.

  644. He rose triumphant

  645. and His glory

  646. is eternal

  647. and His work

  648. is finished

  649. and His victory

  650. is yours

  651. if you belong

  652. to Him.

  653. But what we see

  654. with the disciples

  655. is the same thing

  656. that we can find

  657. ourselves in.

  658. We're looking for glory

  659. in all the wrong places.

  660. We're going to see them

  661. in a couple chapters.

  662. They're fighting

  663. about who's number one.

  664. Who's the number one

  665. disciple?

  666. And James and John's mom

  667. made little stickers.

  668. James and John,

  669. number one.

  670. I mean,

  671. that's in there.

  672. That's in the Bible.

  673. Mama came and tried

  674. to speak up

  675. for her boys.

  676. Like,

  677. I know these other guys

  678. are good,

  679. but there are no

  680. James and John.

  681. I mean,

  682. James and John

  683. are special.

  684. And they're missing it.

  685. So I just want to ask you

  686. before we move on,

  687. where are you looking

  688. for glory?

  689. The only glory we have

  690. is in Christ

  691. and Him crucified.

  692. It's by the grace of God

  693. we are who we are.

  694. You know,

  695. maybe you're looking

  696. in your accomplishments

  697. and your stuff.

  698. Here's where we should be looking,

  699. Jesus saying,

  700. at your Savior.

  701. All that glory fades.

  702. That new car smell

  703. that you worked so hard for,

  704. probably smells like

  705. french fries right now.

  706. You know,

  707. we talked about it last week.

  708. You've never eaten in here.

  709. Man,

  710. there's probably more french fries

  711. under your seat

  712. than there were in your mouth.

  713. That dream vacation,

  714. it's going to,

  715. you've got to come back

  716. to reality at some point.

  717. Everything fades in our life.

  718. Our hair fades.

  719. Sometimes it just leaves us.

  720. I'm not looking at anybody.

  721. I'm not looking at anybody.

  722. Don't judge me here.

  723. But Jesus is just reminding us,

  724. he's reminding his disciples,

  725. this is the only glory

  726. that's going to last.

  727. This is the only glory

  728. that lasts forever.

  729. And see,

  730. on this mountain,

  731. the disciples saw the glory

  732. of Jesus with their own eyes,

  733. but now they needed to hear

  734. the truth with their own ears.

  735. And God the Father shows up

  736. and he has a command.

  737. This is my beloved son.

  738. Hear him.

  739. Hear him.

  740. That's what we see

  741. the fathers say.

  742. But there in verse number 32,

  743. Peter,

  744. he's overwhelmed,

  745. he's in awe,

  746. and he should have

  747. just been quiet.

  748. You know,

  749. he thought,

  750. man,

  751. last time I spoke up,

  752. I said something really good.

  753. I'm going to say something again.

  754. And he wakes up

  755. and he sees Jesus

  756. in his glorified version.

  757. He sees Elijah and Moses

  758. and he says,

  759. hey,

  760. guess what?

  761. It's good for us to be here.

  762. He's like,

  763. come on,

  764. that's what you came up with?

  765. That's what he decided to say?

  766. He said,

  767. and then he,

  768. you know,

  769. I don't know where he got them,

  770. but he pulled these blueprints

  771. out of his back pocket.

  772. He said,

  773. okay,

  774. here Jesus,

  775. look at these.

  776. I've seen a plan on Pinterest

  777. for three tabernacles.

  778. We're going to build it right here.

  779. And we're going to put it right here,

  780. right here,

  781. and one for you,

  782. and one for Elijah,

  783. and one for Moses,

  784. and we're just going to hang out here.

  785. But before he really can finish

  786. his building plans,

  787. that's when God the Father shows up.

  788. It's like,

  789. Peter,

  790. be quiet.

  791. Peter,

  792. stop talking.

  793. You're missing the point.

  794. What Peter's trying to do,

  795. and you're going to see it multiple times

  796. in Peter's life,

  797. he tries to get Jesus

  798. to kind of go around the cross

  799. and right to glory.

  800. It doesn't work that way.

  801. He was trying to get him

  802. to miss the suffering

  803. and go right to the power.

  804. But the Father made it very clear.

  805. This is my beloved son.

  806. That Jesus wasn't just a prophet

  807. like Moses and Elijah.

  808. He wasn't just some priest.

  809. No,

  810. he is not one among equals.

  811. He has no rivals.

  812. He is the beloved son of God.

  813. And because of who he is,

  814. listen to him.

  815. You see,

  816. Jesus,

  817. prophets spoke of the word.

  818. Jesus is the word.

  819. The priests,

  820. they offer the sacrifice,

  821. but God is reminding them

  822. and reminding us

  823. that Jesus is the sacrifice.

  824. Kings rule for a time,

  825. but Jesus reigns forever.

  826. Religions point to a path,

  827. but Jesus is the path.

  828. And that's why God said,

  829. hear him.

  830. Because only Jesus can save.

  831. Only Jesus can satisfy.

  832. Only Jesus can bring us to God.

  833. And this is not the first time

  834. that God's voice

  835. has thundered with authority.

  836. You can go right

  837. to the very beginning

  838. of the Bible,

  839. and God said,

  840. let there be.

  841. Listen,

  842. God's voice creates.

  843. God's voice calls personally.

  844. He came to Samuel.

  845. Samuel,

  846. Samuel,

  847. here am I.

  848. Well,

  849. what would you have,

  850. Lord?

  851. Lord,

  852. the voice of God

  853. came to Elijah

  854. in a still small voice,

  855. and it comforts

  856. in that weakness.

  857. At Jesus' own baptism,

  858. his voice affirmed,

  859. thou art my beloved son

  860. in whom I am well pleased.

  861. And here again

  862. at the transfiguration,

  863. he reminds us

  864. that God's voice

  865. also directs.

  866. You see,

  867. the same voice

  868. that spoke light

  869. into darkness,

  870. who called prophets

  871. by name,

  872. who whispered comfort

  873. to Elijah,

  874. who affirmed Jesus

  875. at the Jordan,

  876. is now commanding

  877. his disciples,

  878. and he's commanding us,

  879. hear Jesus.

  880. Hear him.

  881. Hear what he's got to say.

  882. Have you noticed

  883. that life is noisy?

  884. I mean,

  885. especially if you've got kids.

  886. I mean,

  887. it feels like a million

  888. things are going on,

  889. and they're all telling a story,

  890. and then you're turning

  891. the TV up,

  892. trying to hear what it is.

  893. You know,

  894. when you can't see it,

  895. you turn it up, right?

  896. I'm not the only person.

  897. I'm like,

  898. okay,

  899. let me turn it up

  900. so I can see it better.

  901. You know,

  902. I'm trying to like,

  903. focus on what's going on.

  904. Maybe you got the GPS,

  905. and you're holding it,

  906. trying to drink your coffee,

  907. and do all these things,

  908. and there's so many things

  909. that are calling us,

  910. so many things

  911. that are pulling us away,

  912. and sometimes Jesus' voice

  913. gets drowned out.

  914. Maybe you think,

  915. man,

  916. I've been walking through

  917. some really difficult things.

  918. Let me just ask you this.

  919. Whose voice

  920. are you listening to?

  921. Whose voice

  922. are you trying to decipher

  923. through the crowd

  924. and the noise?

  925. Because sometimes

  926. if we're honest

  927. with ourselves,

  928. we ignore Jesus' voice

  929. because it's still

  930. and it's small

  931. and maybe it's not

  932. as loud as the others,

  933. but let me just encourage you

  934. and remind you,

  935. ignoring Jesus' voice

  936. is very costly.

  937. Culture is calling for us.

  938. Social media is calling for us.

  939. Our own doubts are calling,

  940. but the Savior is here

  941. and He's speaking truth

  942. and hope

  943. and life.

  944. See,

  945. the mountain revealed

  946. who Jesus was

  947. and who He is,

  948. and the mission

  949. would reveal

  950. what He came to accomplish

  951. there on the cross,

  952. and that meant

  953. a path of suffering

  954. came before the crown.

  955. The last thing

  956. I want us to look at

  957. this morning is this,

  958. that we need to learn

  959. from the suffering

  960. of God's servant.

  961. We need to learn

  962. from the suffering

  963. of God's servant.

  964. I want us to circle back.

  965. I said that we would

  966. in verse number 31.

  967. When Jesus,

  968. who appeared in His glory

  969. and spake

  970. of His decease,

  971. which He should accomplish

  972. at Jerusalem.

  973. That word,

  974. decease,

  975. it's not a word

  976. that we would use

  977. all the time,

  978. but here's what it

  979. literally means

  980. in the original language,

  981. Exodus.

  982. Jesus is speaking

  983. of His Exodus,

  984. and He's there

  985. with the great deliverer

  986. of Israel,

  987. Moses,

  988. and do you see it?

  989. I hope that you do,

  990. that just as Moses

  991. led Israel out of bondage

  992. in Egypt,

  993. Jesus,

  994. the reason that He came

  995. is that He was going

  996. to lead His people

  997. out of sin and death

  998. at the cross of Calvary.

  999. See,

  1000. He didn't come

  1001. to set up

  1002. an earthly kingdom.

  1003. No,

  1004. He came to die

  1005. that we might live,

  1006. and they're talking

  1007. about it,

  1008. and it reminds us

  1009. that glory

  1010. is not an escape

  1011. from suffering

  1012. many times,

1013. and most of the time,

  1014. it's reached

  1015. through suffering.

  1016. And Jesus was willing

  1017. that He humbled Himself

  1018. and He became obedient

  1019. unto death,

  1020. even the death

  1021. of the cross.

  1022. The writer in Hebrews

  1023. reminds us

  1024. that for the joy

  1025. that was set

  1026. before Him,

  1027. He endured the cross.

  1028. Why?

  1029. For you.

  1030. For me.

  1031. He came,

  1032. and He had this

  1033. exodus planned

  1034. so that we wouldn't

  1035. have to be servants

  1036. to sin,

  1037. that we wouldn't have

  1038. to live with guilt

  1039. and shame

  1040. and fear

  1041. and regret

  1042. and worry.

  1043. No,

1044. He came to give us life

1045. and to give it to us

  1046. more abundantly

  1047. and peace

  1048. and joy

  1049. and all the things

1050. the world is looking for,

  1051. it's found in Jesus,

  1052. and it's accomplished

  1053. through the cross.

  1054. See,

  1055. Jesus would not wear

  1056. the crown

  1057. without first carrying

  1058. the cross.

1059. You see kind of this

  1060. played out through Scripture

  1061. in different ways.

  1062. We saw that Joseph,

  1063. he was betrayed,

  1064. he was imprisoned,

  1065. he went through

  1066. difficult things,

  1067. but at the end,

  1068. God raised him up.

  1069. That suffering

  1070. before glory.

  1071. We saw Job,

  1072. he was broken,

  1073. he was tested,

  1074. but God restored him.

  1075. David was hunted

  1076. by others,

  1077. he was in hiding

1078. for a lot of his life,

  1079. but ultimately

  1080. he was crowned.

  1081. Paul was beaten

  1082. and shipwrecked

  1083. and jailed

1084. and all these other things,

  1085. but he rejoiced

  1086. because God was working

  1087. in his life.

  1088. And Jesus,

  1089. he endured the cross

  1090. and now he's enthroned

  1091. forever,

  1092. forever.

  1093. And it's a principle

1094. we see in our own lives

  1095. and athletes know

  1096. that there's no medal

  1097. without sweat.

  1098. Soldiers know

  1099. that there's no victory

  1100. without a battle.

  1101. Parents know

  1102. that there's no peace

  1103. without surviving bedtime.

1104. Just bring it real close

  1105. where we live.

1106. What does this mean for us?

  1107. Sometimes we read this

  1108. and think,

  1109. well, man,

  1110. what a cool story.

  1111. He's on a mountain,

  1112. he turns really bright

1113. and some cool stuff happens.

1114. What Jesus is reminding us

  1115. is this,

  1116. that don't be surprised

  1117. when following Christ

  1118. costs you.

  1119. See,

1120. this is coming off the hills

1121. of taking up your cross

  1122. and following him.

  1123. That the cross

  1124. always comes

  1125. before the crown.

1126. But there's great hope too.

  1127. And that's why

  1128. he kind of pulled

  1129. the veil back

  1130. and I got a little glimpse

  1131. of it because here

  1132. is the hope

  1133. that if we share

  1134. in his sufferings,

  1135. we will also

  1136. share in his glory.

1137. Not because we deserve it,

  1138. because that's what

  1139. he offers us.

  1140. Because that's what

  1141. he gives us.

1142. I love what Paul tells

  1143. the Romans in Romans 8, 17.

  1144. The spirit itself

  1145. beareth witness

  1146. with our spirit

1147. that we are the children

  1148. of God.

  1149. That if we know

  1150. Christ is our Savior,

  1151. God confirms that

  1152. and if children,

  1153. then heirs.

  1154. Heirs of God

  1155. and joint heirs

  1156. with Christ.

  1157. So be that

1158. if we suffer with him

  1159. that we may also

  1160. be glorified together.

  1161. Verse 18,

  1162. for I reckon,

  1163. you didn't know

  1164. Paul was texting.

  1165. Paul's reckoning

  1166. right here.

  1167. For I reckon,

1168. listen to what Paul says,

  1169. that the sufferings

  1170. of this present time

  1171. are not worthy

  1172. to be compared

  1173. with the glory

  1174. which shall be revealed

  1175. in us.

1176. You know what Paul's saying?

  1177. Yes, it's hard.

  1178. And I'm not belittling

  1179. anything that anybody

  1180. is walking through,

  1181. has walked through,

  1182. or will walk through.

  1183. But Paul says,

1184. listen, there is coming a day

1185. that when we see Christ

  1186. face to face

1187. and we stand before him,

  1188. everything we went through

  1189. in this life,

  1190. we're going to realize,

  1191. you know what?

  1192. It really wasn't

  1193. that big a deal.

1194. Look what God has given us.

1195. It eye hath not seen,

  1196. ear hath not heard,

  1197. nor has it entered

1198. into the heart of the man

  1199. the things that God

  1200. has prepared for them

  1201. that love him.

  1202. That's what Jesus

  1203. wanted them to see.

  1204. See, with Christ,

  1205. suffering is not

1206. the end of the story.

1207. It's the road to glory.

1208. That's what he wants us to see.

  1209. So we've seen

1210. the glory of the Son,

  1211. we've heard the voice

  1212. of the Father,

  1213. and we've learned

  1214. the path of suffering

  1215. that leads to glory.

  1216. But the question

1217. that I leave you with

  1218. this morning is,

  1219. how will you respond?

  1220. How will you respond?

  1221. I think for those

  1222. that follow Christ

  1223. and know him

  1224. as your Savior,

  1225. the message is encouraging.

  1226. That when you're weary,

  1227. remember that glimpse

  1228. of glory.

  1229. When you're confused,

  1230. listen to the voice

  1231. of Jesus.

  1232. When you're hurting,

  1233. trust the path

  1234. that leads

  1235. through the cross

  1236. to the ground.

1237. Jesus said he is the way

  1238. and the truth

  1239. and the life.

  1240. See, this passage,

  1241. what it is doing

1242. and what it is reminding,

  1243. it is calling us

  1244. to steady obedience.

  1245. Keep following.

  1246. Keep listening.

  1247. Keep trusting.

  1248. Maybe you're here

  1249. and you're just still

1250. kind of really weighing out

  1251. who Jesus is.

1252. You love a lot of things

  1253. about him.

  1254. You love church

  1255. and some songs

1256. and you read your Bible

1257. every once in a while,

  1258. but you're still

  1259. kind of just searching.

  1260. Listen,

  1261. the Father wants us

  1262. to do one thing,

1263. wants you to do one thing.

  1264. Hear Jesus.

  1265. What does Jesus say?

  1266. I am the way

  1267. and the truth

  1268. and the life.

  1269. No man comes

  1270. to the Father

  1271. but by me.

  1272. Jesus also told

  1273. Mary and Martha

  1274. and John chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

  1275. I am the resurrection

  1276. and the life.

1277. He that believeth in me,

  1278. though he were dead,

  1279. yet shall he live.

  1280. Jesus told the disciples

  1281. in John chapter 6,

    John 6:37

  1282. verse 37,

1283. he that cometh to me

1284. and I will in no wise

  1285. cast out.

  1286. He preached the gospel

1287. there in Mark chapter 1,

    Mark 1:15

  1288. verse 15,

  1289. repent and believe

  1290. the gospel.

  1291. Repent and believe

  1292. Jesus Christ.

  1293. Jesus calls to all,

  1294. come unto me,

  1295. all you that labor

  1296. and are heavy laden,

1297. and I will give you rest.

  1298. Maybe that's what you

  1299. need to hear today.

  1300. There is a God

  1301. that loves you

1302. and he came to this earth

1303. and he lived for you.

  1304. He lived a life

1305. that we could not live.

  1306. Where we failed,

  1307. he succeeded.

1308. Where the first Adam failed,

  1309. the second Adam

  1310. made all things new.

  1311. And this same Jesus

1312. who laid down his life

  1313. at Calvary

  1314. took the punishment

1315. of sin that we all deserve

1316. and rose again in victory.

  1317. And now he offers

1318. the same to all of us.

  1319. See, ignoring Jesus

1320. is like ignoring your doctor

1321. when he offers you the cure.

  1322. It's like ignoring a lifeguard

1323. that's trying to throw you

  1324. a rope.

  1325. You're drowning

1326. and you just ignore it.

  1327. See, to reject Jesus

  1328. is to refuse

  1329. the only hope

  1330. of salvation.

  1331. So today,

  1332. whether you're a believer

1333. or you're maybe still searching,

  1334. the Father's command

  1335. is the same.

  1336. This

  1337. is my beloved son.

  1338. Hear him.

  1339. Will you hear him?

  1340. Will you obey him?

  1341. Will you follow him?

  1342. Because when you realize

  1343. who Jesus is,

  1344. he's worthy

  1345. of all those things.

1346. He is the son of God.

  1347. Would you stand

  1348. with your heads bowed?

  1349. With your eyes closed.
