  1. You found your place there in 1 Peter chapter number 1.

  2. The Bible says this,

  3. And that's kind of the title of our series,

  4. A Living Hope.

  5. That Peter's reminding them their hope is not buried somewhere,

  6. it's not in circumstances, it's not in all these things.

  7. There is a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

  8. To an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled that fadeth not away,

  9. reserved in heaven for you.

  10. Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation,

  11. ready to be revealed in the last time.

  12. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season,

  13. if need be ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations.

  14. That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than that of gold that perisheth,

  15. though it be tried with fire,

  16. might be found in the praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.

  17. Whom having not seen ye love,

  18. and whom though now ye see him not yet believing,

  19. ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.

  20. Receive the end of your faith,

  21. receiving the end of your faith,

  22. even the salvation of your souls.

  23. So we kind of start off this series,

  24. and look at just these verses right here.

  25. We get the idea that Peter is reminding them,

  26. and we'll dig into a little bit more of it,

  27. but yes, they were going through a lot of things,

  28. and there was a lot of difficulty in their life,

  29. but he's reminding of how blessed they truly are.

  30. And I know we throw that word around,

  31. and it became kind of a hashtag for a while.

  32. Everybody's hashtag blessed,

  33. and you put it on every post, you know,

  34. whether it's talking about your lunch,

  35. or your family, or whatever it is,

  36. or you're blessed with everything.

  37. And we sing that old hymn,

  38. count your blessings, name them one by one.

  39. And I know sometimes we sing that song,

  40. oh, I know this,

  41. but when we really start thinking about it,

  42. and I think that's a great thing

  43. when I thoroughly enjoy our pie and praise service,

  44. because it gives us an opportunity to step back

  45. and to look at our life,

  46. kind of reflect over the past year

  47. as we did this Thanksgiving,

  48. and just remember how blessed we are.

  49. And it was a longer service,

  50. but it was still short,

  51. because we didn't even touch the hem of the garment

  52. of how blessed we are.

  53. And then when you think about your life,

  54. and you think about all the things

  55. that you have in Christ,

  56. my prayer is tonight

  57. that everybody knows Jesus as your personal Savior,

  58. but just think about salvation.

  59. Think about how much it changed your life.

  60. It's not just a home in heaven one day.

  61. No, it affects the here and the now.

  62. It affects the joy and the peace

  63. that we have because it's real.

  64. We look around,

  65. and I'm thankful for a church family.

  66. I'm thankful for my own family,

  67. and how God has blessed us.

  68. I'm thankful for health,

  69. and maybe your health is not exactly

  70. where you want it to be,

  71. but you're here tonight.

  72. Right?

  73. And you're breathing,

  74. and God's giving you another day to serve Him,

  75. and the sun is shining,

  76. and we're thankful for that.

  77. I'm thankful for this church.

  78. I'm thankful for the blessings

  79. that God has given Central Baptist Church

  80. over the years.

  81. I'm thankful for what He's doing right now,

  82. and I'm just as excited and thankful

  83. for what He's going to do in the future.

  84. We have a place that we can come,

  85. and in the middle of a busy week,

  86. and at the start of a new week,

  87. we can gather with those that we love,

  88. and we can lift our voices together,

  89. and we have freedom to worship.

  90. There's many of our missionaries

  91. we read on Wednesday nights

  92. in our prayer letters

  93. that don't have the same freedoms

  94. that we have.

  95. The countries they're serving in

  96. are coming up with stricter

  97. and stricter conversion laws.

  98. They can't even speak their faith

  99. to their friends,

  100. and to their coworkers,

  101. and to their neighbors,

  102. and yet we have that opportunity

  103. to do it every day.

  104. We have that opportunity

  105. to come in here, really,

  106. and not worry about anything.

  107. When you come here,

  108. you expect the doors to be open.

  109. Some places,

  110. they have to figure out

  111. where the church is meeting that day

  112. because it's always on the run.

  113. It's underground.

  114. It's in secret.

  115. I'm thankful for the Word of God

  116. that we have in our hands,

  117. and not only do we have it in our hands,

  118. you probably have it in your pocket.

  119. You have it on your computer.

  120. You have it on your email.

  121. I mean, everywhere we go,

  122. we're saturated with the Word of God,

  123. and sometimes we allow that

  124. to kind of just,

  125. eh, well, that's just normal.

  126. No, it's a blessing from God

  127. that we have those things,

  128. and I love that song we sing,

  129. that doxology,

  130. praise God from whom

  131. all blessings flow,

  132. and as we kind of open up

  133. this letter that's Peter's writing,

  134. he's reminding his hearers,

  135. he's reminding the readers

  136. what a blessing it is

  137. to be a Christian,

  138. and for us today,

  139. we think, yeah, that's true,

  140. but when we really dive into

  141. the difficulty it was

  142. in the first century

  143. to be a Christian,

  144. that's really saying something,

  145. because in this time period

  146. to identify with Christ,

  147. to publicly profess Him,

  148. to live a life obedient

  149. to His Word

  150. would have put a target

  151. on your back.

  152. It would have brought

  153. persecution to that,

  154. and Peter's saying,

  155. listen, I know it's hard,

  156. but God is good,

  157. and that's really the idea

  158. behind this letter,

  159. and he wanted them

  160. to understand,

  161. and through the Holy Spirit,

  162. it reminds us today

  163. that if we know Christ

  164. as our Savior,

  165. because we have

  166. a relationship with Him,

  167. there's a word

  168. that is no longer

  169. to be used in our vocabulary,

  170. hopeless.

  171. That doesn't find place

  172. in our life

  173. that as a born-again believer,

  174. we don't know

  175. what true hopelessness is anymore,

  176. because Jesus is our hope.

  177. Jesus is alive,

  178. that our hope isn't based

  179. on some wishy-washy thing,

  180. no, that it's settled,

  181. and it's firm,

  182. and we can anchor our soul

  183. to it.

  184. The Apostle Paul spoke

  185. of this idea

  186. throughout his letters as well.

  187. If you remember there

  188. in Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  189. verse number 12,

  190. he reminded us

  191. that before salvation,

  192. we were without God,

  193. and we were without hope

  194. in this world.

  195. I think we look

  196. at the world around us,

  197. at least I do,

  198. and I think to myself,

  199. how do they continue

  200. to move forward?

  201. Because it doesn't mean

  202. that as Christians,

  203. we don't walk through

  204. difficult times,

  205. but I cannot imagine

  206. walking through some things

  207. that I've walked through

  208. and walking alongside

  209. of others that are walking

  210. through difficult times

  211. and doing that without God.

  212. I can't fathom

  213. how they do that,

  214. and really,

  215. I don't think they do it

  216. very well.

  217. And maybe you can go back

  218. in your life

  219. before you knew Christ

  220. and your life was pointless,

  221. and there was no hope,

  222. but hope has a name,

  223. and that's what Peter's

  224. going to remind us

  225. over and over and over again.

  226. Paul also told us

  227. that unbelievers,

  228. they grieve as those

  229. who have no hope.

  230. He was writing there

  231. in 1 Thessalonians 4,

  232. and reminding,

  233. because there was this teaching

  234. going around

  235. that their loved ones

  236. had passed on,

  237. that they missed it,

  238. and they're not going to go

  239. and see Christ,

  240. that they're dead,

  241. and he reminds them,

  242. hey, that's not how this works,

  243. that those that are dead in Christ,

  244. they're going to rise first,

  245. and we'll meet them in the air,

  246. and so shall we ever

  247. be with the Lord.

  248. And Paul told them,

  249. we don't grieve

  250. as those that have no hope.

  251. Part of my job,

  252. so to speak,

  253. is I officiate

  254. quite a few funerals,

  255. but there is

  256. a noticeable difference

  257. when we gather around

  258. a loved one

  259. that knows Christ,

  260. and at a funeral

  261. where there is

  262. no knowledge of Christ,

  263. the despair that is there,

  264. it's palpable,

  265. you can feel it in the air,

  266. but we've laid here,

  267. and some dear saints

  268. of this church,

  269. some dear family members

  270. of yours,

  271. we have cried,

  272. but we haven't cried

  273. as those with no hope.

  274. Really, our grief

  275. is for ourselves.

  276. We're happy

  277. that they're finally

  278. walking the streets of gold,

  279. and they're seeing

  280. their Savior face to face.

  281. Our grief is

  282. because we miss them,

  283. but we know this,

  284. there is coming a day

  285. when we shall see him,

  286. but we shall see those

  287. that have gone on

  288. before us.

  289. So hopelessness

  290. is something

  291. that is no longer

  292. in the life of a believer.

  293. I mean,

  294. just the word hopeless

  295. is an awful word.

  296. When you really think about it,

  297. people can endure

  298. incredible hardship

  299. if there's hope.

  300. You can look

  301. throughout history,

  302. and we see even

  303. Christians as they,

  304. or Peter's writing to,

  305. and you go to the dark ages,

  306. and you go through

  307. different times

  308. where they're literally

  309. being hunted

  310. and slaughtered.

  311. How do they continue

  312. to move forward?

  313. Hope.

  314. That Christ is still for them,

  315. that he still loves them,

  316. but when hope is removed

  317. from any situation,

  318. despair takes its place.

  319. And that's why Peter

  320. wrote this letter.

  321. Many of the letters

  322. in the New Testament,

  323. Paul and John

  324. and others would write,

  325. and they were kind of

  326. having to combat

  327. some bad theology

  328. that had crept in the church.

  329. Some false teachers

  330. that had come in,

  331. and yes,

  332. Peter deals with some of that.

  333. We'll see as we walk through,

  334. but really,

  335. this letter was written

  336. to give hope.

  337. Peter wrote this

  338. in around A.D. 67.

  339. Most Bible scholars

  340. would say

  341. that he probably

  342. wrote this from Rome

  343. to the believers

  344. that were scattered

  345. really across Asia Minor.

  346. So we see there

  347. in the first verse

  348. that to the strangers

  349. scattered throughout

  350. these areas.

  351. these Christians

  352. were under pressure

  353. just in their daily life.

  354. They were misunderstood

  355. by many people

  356. because we have to understand

  357. that Christianity

  358. at this time

  359. is still relatively new.

  360. They don't really understand

  361. who are these people?

  362. What is this about?

  363. It wasn't like

  364. they could get on Wikipedia

  365. and see what's Christianity about.

  366. They didn't have that ability

  367. like we do

  368. to kind of Google things

  369. and to figure it out.

  370. They were,

  371. there was kind of

  372. all this hearsay

  373. and misunderstanding.

  374. And inevitably

  375. it just led

  376. to some heavy persecution.

  377. But instead of praying

  378. that the persecution

  379. would leave them,

  380. we see there

  381. in verse number two

  382. at the end of the verse

  383. that here's what Peter

  384. wanted them to understand.

  385. He was praying

  386. that grace unto you

  387. and peace

  388. be multiplied.

  389. Not that trouble

  390. would disappear.

  391. I think so often

  392. when we find hard times

  393. in our life,

  394. we find difficulties,

  395. when we seem like

  396. a situation's hopeless,

  397. we say,

  398. Lord, get rid of this

  399. so I can move forward.

  400. But sometimes

  401. it's in these difficult times

  402. that God really refines us.

  403. They were tried by fire,

  404. so to speak,

  405. and God brings us forth

  406. as gold

  407. as the Bible tells us

  408. in the book of Job.

  409. Because when you study

  410. Christianity,

  411. especially in the first century

  412. and around the times

  413. of these writings,

  414. they are trying

  415. to stamp it out.

  416. They are trying

  417. to rid the Roman Empire

  418. of Christianity in general

  419. and yet

  420. it continues

  421. to move forward.

  422. It continues to go.

  423. You study the book of Acts

  424. and you see the gospel

  425. spreading like a flame

  426. and Peter's reminding him

  427. it's not time to give up.

  428. No, we have something

  429. worth fighting for.

  430. We have somebody

  431. who's fighting for us

  432. and yes,

  433. it might seem at times

  434. that we're not winning,

  435. but let me remind you

  436. we have an inheritance

  437. that's incorruptible

  438. and undefiled

  439. and fadeth not away

  440. and is reserved in heaven.

  441. You know what Peter's saying?

  442. This world is not our home.

  443. We're just a passing through.

  444. He's writing to strangers.

  445. He's writing to pilgrims

  446. because as a Christian

  447. we do look different

  448. and we should.

  449. In fact,

  450. he's going to tell us

  451. that we're a royal priesthood.

  452. We're a peculiar people.

  453. Now, listen,

  454. that doesn't mean

  455. to be weird on purpose.

  456. Some of y'all got that nailed down,

  457. but listen,

  458. we should live differently.

  459. And Peter's reminding them,

  460. he's saying,

  461. listen,

  462. don't be a chameleon

  463. into society

  464. that you should stick out,

  465. that you should live different.

  466. Why?

  467. Because we are different.

  468. That's what holy means.

  469. You know what holy really means?

  470. Here's the definition.

  471. Other.

  472. Different.

  473. Set apart.

  474. We're going to get to the text

  475. in Peter where he tells us,

  476. be ye holy

  477. for I am holy,

  478. saith the Lord.

  479. So that's really the idea

  480. behind this.

  481. That in the following weeks,

  482. we're going to walk

  483. verse by verse

  484. through 1 Peter.

  485. But before we do that,

  486. I really just kind of want

  487. to give us an overview

  488. of what he's talking about

  489. in these themes

  490. and what the hope Peter

  491. is mentioning,

  492. what it is.

  493. And why it's so desperately needed.

  494. So if hope is that essential

  495. to our lives as believers,

  496. I think the first question

  497. we answer is this.

  498. What is biblical hope?

  499. What does biblical hope look like?

  500. You know, we say things

  501. all the time.

  502. Like I hope the wind

  503. doesn't blow so hard tomorrow.

  504. I hope it doesn't rain.

  505. I hope the Cowboys win.

  506. We know none of those things

  507. are going to change anything.

  508. You know, I'm so happy

  509. for Cowboy fans right now.

  510. You don't have to lose

  511. because you didn't make

  512. the playoffs.

  513. But it hurts me too

  514. because I do want to cheer

  515. for my hometown team.

  516. But I think sometimes

  517. we think of hope

  518. and we see it in the Bible

  519. and we talk about a hope

  520. that fadeth not away

  521. and we have a anchor,

  522. a hope that we anchor

  523. our soul to

  524. and we kind of equate it

  525. how we relate to hope.

  526. Our hope many times

  527. is wishful thinking.

  528. You know, we're going

  529. to cross our fingers

  530. and hope it works out.

  531. We're going to wing it

  532. and play it by ear.

  533. Sometimes our hope

  534. is blind optimism.

  535. You know, if we just

  536. speak it into existence,

  537. maybe it will happen.

  538. That's not what

  539. biblical hope is.

  540. I think a good definition

  541. of biblical hope

  542. is a sure and confident

  543. expectation of receiving

  544. what God has promised us

  545. in the future.

  546. That we're anchored

  547. to something.

  548. God said it.

  549. It might not be taking

  550. place right now,

  551. but we know this.

  552. If God said it,

  553. that settles it.

  554. And that's what Peter's

  555. reminding them

  556. because they are literally

  557. going through the fire.

  558. They are going through

  559. extreme persecution.

  560. But he's saying,

  561. listen, there's a hope

  562. that is anchored

  563. because God said so

  564. and he always comes through.

  565. He always keeps

  566. his promises.

  567. How do we know that?

  568. How do we know

  569. that God will keep

  570. his promises?

  571. Because he has proven

  572. himself time and time

  573. and time and time again.

  574. And he wanted these readers

  575. to go back in their mind

  576. and to remember that,

  577. yes, it's hard,

  578. but listen,

  579. I should have been done there.

  580. And that could have been

  581. the end there.

  582. And this situation

  583. could have really set us back.

  584. But guess who showed up

  585. there and there and there?

  586. God.

  587. And I remind you

  588. this evening

  589. that life might be difficult

  590. and you might walk

  591. through some hard valleys.

  592. Maybe you're in one right now

  593. and sometimes it feels

  594. like it's pretty dark

  595. and I'm not sure

  596. I'm coming out

  597. on the other side,

  598. but here's the truth

  599. that we have a shepherd

  600. that even though

  601. we walk through the valley

  602. of the shadow of death,

  603. he's with us.

  604. We don't have to fear

  605. what's going to happen.

  606. Why can we say that?

  607. How could David pin that?

  608. Because they knew this,

  609. God always shows up

  610. and that's what we hold on to.

  611. And Peter calls it

  612. not just a good hope,

  613. not a solid hope.

  614. You know,

  615. I like good things.

  616. I like things that are solid,

  617. things that I can count on.

  618. Here's what he calls it

  619. in verse number three,

  620. unto a lively hope.

  621. A hope that's living,

  622. a hope that is active,

  623. a hope that is present,

  624. a hope that is powerful,

  625. that when you wake up

  626. in the morning,

  627. it's there.

  628. When you go to sleep

  629. at night,

  630. it's there,

  631. that it's God

  632. that's holding you together,

  633. that it's God

  634. that is sustaining you

  635. and that hope,

  636. it works in us

  637. and that hope,

  638. it steadies us

  639. and that hope sustains us.

  640. Why?

  641. Because it's alive.

  642. It's not a word

  643. in a dictionary.

  644. It's a person

  645. and he's on the throne

  646. in heaven

  647. and he's hopefully

  648. on the throne

  649. in our own life.

  650. And we hear this

  651. and I read these verses

  652. and when I read

  653. a few of these verses here,

  654. when I read verse number four

  655. about the inheritance

  656. coming my way

  657. and we can rejoice

  658. in the Lord

  659. and we have joy unspeakable

  660. and full of glory,

  661. I'm thankful for that.

  662. But here's the reality.

  663. Something's probably

  664. going to come my way

  665. this week

  666. where I'm going to think,

  667. Lord,

  668. where are you?

  669. Lord,

  670. this doesn't look good.

  671. This situation,

  672. you know,

  673. like I know

  674. I preach the message

  675. but this looks

  676. kind of hopeless.

  677. When that anxiety rises,

  678. when that fear

  679. tries to displace

  680. that hope,

  681. sometimes we ask,

  682. why do I feel this way?

  683. Instead of that,

  684. maybe this week

  685. when a difficulty

  686. comes in your life,

  687. ask this,

  688. what has God promised?

  689. Listen,

  690. if you anchor yourself

  691. to your feelings,

  692. you're going to be

  693. a miserable person.

  694. Because that's what your feelings

  695. are like,

  696. a roller coaster.

  697. Sometimes they're really good.

  698. Sometimes they're scary.

  699. Sometimes you're pretty sure

  700. you're going to die.

  701. Sometimes you're just passed out.

  702. You don't know

  703. what's going on.

  704. You know,

  705. I don't want my life

  706. to be a roller coaster.

  707. But if I'm anchoring

  708. my hope

  709. to my feelings,

  710. that's what it's going

  711. to feel like.

  712. There's going to be

  713. great days.

  714. Then there's going to be

  715. days that feel like

  716. there is no hope.

  717. But if we ask ourselves

  718. that question,

  719. what has God said

  720. about this?

  721. What has God promised?

  722. We sing the whole song too,

  723. standing on the promises.

  724. Find a promise.

  725. When you're dealing

  726. with something in your life,

  727. guess what?

  728. The Bible has something

  729. to say about it.

  730. Go to the Word of God,

  731. find it,

  732. and claim it.

  733. Trust God that what He says,

  734. that He holds His promises,

  735. that all His promises

  736. are yes and amen.

  737. That they are intended

  738. for us to hang on to.

  739. That we can anchor

  740. ourselves to that.

  741. And so once we kind of

  742. understand what

  743. biblical hope is,

  744. the next question

  745. that kind of flows

  746. out of that

  747. is where does it come from?

  748. We talk about it all the time.

  749. It's all over the pages

  750. of Scripture,

  751. but where does it come from?

  752. Verse 3,

  753. there again at the end

  754. of the verse.

  755. Again,

  756. unto a lively hope,

  757. here's where it comes from,

  758. by the resurrection

  759. of Jesus Christ

  760. from the dead.

  761. It's as simple as that.

  762. Everything we have

  763. in this life,

  764. everything we're hoping for,

  765. everything we're anchored to,

  766. is based on the fact

  767. that the tomb

  768. is empty.

  769. That Jesus Christ

  770. did exactly

  771. what He said

  772. He was going to do.

  773. I don't know about you,

  774. but I am thankful

  775. that our hope,

  776. that my hope,

  777. is not based on

  778. my faithfulness.

  779. I think you should be as well.

  780. Because there are some days

  781. and there are some weeks

  782. that I'm killing it.

  783. I'm like,

  784. man,

  785. I'm good at this.

  786. And there are some days

  787. as the preacher,

  788. I think,

  789. I don't want to go to church.

  790. I'm tired of serving.

  791. I'm tired.

  792. Am I the only one?

  793. Okay,

  794. I know it's Sunday night,

  795. just making sure,

  796. just making sure

  797. that this thing's on.

  798. Listen,

  799. I'm thankful that

  800. it's not based on that.

  801. I'm thankful

  802. that the hope

  803. that Peter speaks of

  804. in this book

  805. that we're going to see

  806. is not based on circumstances.

  807. Because sometimes

  808. when circumstances are good,

  809. you're thinking,

  810. hey,

  811. this is going to be a good day.

  812. You wake up,

  813. you say,

  814. oh,

  815. it's going to be a great day.

  816. We know this,

  817. circumstances in life

  818. just change like this.

  819. I mean,

  820. we see it here

  821. in the weather.

  822. I mean,

  823. it's a beautiful day,

  824. it's 80,

  825. and then you look at the news

  826. and you're like,

  827. guess what,

  828. it's going to drop

  829. 57 degrees overnight.

  830. Well,

  831. I'm glad my hope

  832. is not based on the weather.

  833. But we're not basing it

  834. on circumstances.

  835. Because they're

  836. constantly changing.

  837. Our joy's not found in that,

  838. it's found in Christ.

  839. Listen,

  840. our hope

  841. is not on the ability,

  842. our own ability

  843. to hang on.

  844. Because sometimes

  845. we're not even hanging by a thread,

  846. we're just done.

  847. That's not what it's based on.

  848. Our hope

  849. is solely based

  850. on the fact

  851. that there was a Savior

  852. who lived

  853. and died

  854. and was buried

  855. and rose again.

  856. That's what we're anchored to.

  857. That's what Peter's reminding him.

  858. That's why we have

  859. an inheritance

  860. incorruptible.

  861. If it was based on us,

  862. it would be moth and rust

  863. and it does corrupt.

  864. But it's not.

  865. We're laying up treasures

  866. in heaven

  867. based on Christ

  868. and that's where

  869. he's taking us

  870. and everything God promises.

  871. Salvation

  872. and forgiveness

  873. and eternal life.

  874. It stands

  875. on the authority

  876. of the empty tomb.

  877. That's what we can live

  878. and base our life on.

  879. Listen,

  880. if Christ was still

  881. in the grave,

  882. hope would be

  883. nothing more

  884. than just

  885. religious optimism.

  886. Sometimes when you

  887. try to share your faith,

  888. people say,

  889. well that's just a crutch

  890. for the weak.

  891. Well it would be

  892. if Jesus was still

  893. in the grave.

  894. That's exactly

  895. what it would be.

  896. But he's not.

  897. He is alive.

  898. And because he lives

  899. and because the grave

  900. is empty,

  901. hope is alive.

  902. And it's available

  903. right now.

  904. And we need to be

  905. reminded of this

  906. because maybe you think,

  907. well life's pretty good

  908. right now.

  909. But let me remind you

  910. that in this life

  911. you will have tribulation.

  912. And you're going to

  913. walk through a moment

  914. in life where the doctor

  915. says,

  916. I don't know how else

  917. to say this,

  918. but you have cancer.

  919. I don't know how else

  920. to say this.

  921. I don't know how to say this.

  922. And you think,

  923. how am I going to move forward?

  924. Here's how you're going

  925. to move forward.

  926. Jesus Christ.

  927. That he knows

  928. the way you take.

  929. That he knows

  930. where your life is.

  931. And some practical things

  932. just to think about

  933. is when something

  934. doesn't go your way.

  935. When hope seems like

  936. it's slipping out

  937. of your hands.

  938. We can just remind

  939. ourselves of this

  940. great truth.

  941. That the same power

  942. that raised Christ

  943. from the dead

  944. is still alive

  945. and well.

  946. And it's available

  947. to you.

  948. And he knows

  949. where you are.

  950. He knows what you're

  951. walking through.

  952. And when you understand

  953. that and when you see

  954. your hope is rooted

  955. in the resurrection,

  956. the contrast between

  957. the believer's hope

  958. and the world's hope

  959. becomes very clear.

  960. It becomes very obvious.

  961. Because the world's hope,

  962. here's the truth,

  963. it always fails.

  964. It always fails.

  965. When Jesus gets,

  966. he's wrapping up

  967. his Sermon on the Mount

  968. there in Matthew

  969. chapter number 7,

  970. he gives an illustration.

  971. He gives an illustration

  972. about two men

  973. that built a house.

  974. Same materials,

  975. same general location

  976. is what we see,

  977. but they built on

  978. two very different

  979. foundations.

  980. He said the man

  981. that built his house

  982. on the rock,

  983. when the winds came

  984. and the rains came

  985. and the floods rose,

  986. here's what happened

  987. to the house.

  988. It stood.

  989. But those,

  990. the other man

  991. that built on the sand

  992. when the winds came

  993. and the waters came

  994. and all that,

  995. guess what?

  996. The house was gone.

  997. And we look at the world

  998. and we think,

  999. why does it seem,

1000. when I put my trust

1001. and maybe my own ingenuity

  1002. and my own thinking,

1003. why does it fade away?

  1004. Because it's sinking sand.

  1005. The world doesn't build

  1006. on a solid foundation.

  1007. And even as Christians,

1008. we know we're to build

1009. on the Word of God,

  1010. the solid rock,

1011. but we live in the world

1012. and you know what we think?

1013. Let me just Google this.

1014. Let me see a way out of this.

1015. Let me find a quick fix.

  1016. You know in America,

1017. you know what we love

  1018. more than anything?

  1019. A quick fix.

  1020. You look at every

  1021. almost commercial

  1022. and every ad,

1023. you know what they're trying to do?

1024. Quick, fix your life real quick.

1025. They're going to fix this health

  1026. and fix this

1027. and you just take this one thing,

1028. you don't have to change anything else,

1029. just take this magic pill

1030. and everything will be better.

1031. Sometimes life doesn't work that way.

1032. And we have to go through the storm,

1033. we have to deal with the difficulties.

1034. The world is always promising a better.

1035. If we just trust their ways,

1036. it's going to work out.

1037. I know some of you,

1038. history bores you to death,

1039. so fall asleep real quick,

1040. I'll wake you up in a second.

1041. You know anything about Russian history?

  1042. 1918,

  1043. really the Russian Revolution,

  1044. taken over

1045. and the people were promised hope.

  1046. They were promised equality

  1047. and prosperity

  1048. and a better future.

  1049. They called it communism.

1050. And they tried that experiment

  1051. for about 70 years.

  1052. And guess what?

  1053. They were miserable.

  1054. And they were hopeless.

  1055. And that experiment,

  1056. it collapsed

  1057. because it was built

  1058. on human thinking

  1059. and godless power.

  1060. I know that's an extreme thing,

1061. but sometimes in our own life,

  1062. we think,

  1063. hey,

  1064. I know what's best for me.

  1065. Listen,

1066. if I could just get this lined up

1067. and I can kind of move

  1068. some things around here

  1069. and do this,

1070. then I'll have a little bit of hope

1071. that I can hang on to.

  1072. Well, guess what?

  1073. It's going to collapse

1074. just like this experiment did in Russia.

1075. Because it's not based on the word of God.

1076. It's based on our own thinking

  1077. and our own mentality.

1078. And the same is still true today.

  1079. You know,

  1080. every time,

1081. it seems like every time I turn around,

  1082. it's an election season.

1083. I'm just tired of it.

  1084. I'm tired of commercials.

1085. I'm tired of signs about it.

  1086. I'm tired of this.

1087. But if you think about it,

  1088. every election promises hope.

  1089. Some recent campaigns

1090. have even run on that word.

  1091. It's a hope

  1092. and change

1093. and everybody's going to fix the economy

  1094. and heal the society

1095. and build a better future.

  1096. But here's the problem.

1097. It's built on the same old foundation.

  1098. It's just man's wisdom

  1099. recycled a failed system.

  1100. And yes,

  1101. we should vote

1102. and we should try to do our part

  1103. as citizens

  1104. as believers

  1105. and we should vote

1106. by what the word of God says.

  1107. But we understand this.

1108. It's not going to change the world.

1109. You know what's going to change the world?

  1110. Christians living like Christians.

1111. Because that's what happened here

  1112. in Peter's time.

  1113. I mean,

1114. when you go from the book of Acts

1115. after the resurrection of Christ,

1116. Christianity should have been gone

  1117. a long time ago.

1118. But Christians living for Christ

  1119. in a Christ-like manner

  1120. changed the world.

  1121. Acts 17,

1122. I think they said it like this.

1123. They turned the world upside down.

  1124. But really,

  1125. here's what they did.

1126. They just turned it right side up.

  1127. Really,

1128. the whole Bible's about this.

  1129. Turning everything

1130. the way it should be.

1131. That Christ has a way

1132. that we should live our life

  1133. and Scripture reminds us

  1134. that hope deferred,

1135. it maketh the heart sick

1136. and we can't be looking for hope

1137. in all these different ways.

1138. No, we don't have to wait for hope.

1139. We're not hoping it comes.

  1140. No,

  1141. it's here.

1142. And we have Him in our lives

1143. if we know Him as our Savior.

1144. And I'm sure your life,

  1145. I'm sure recent years,

  1146. has taught us,

1147. if it's taught us anything,

  1148. it's this,

1149. that God has to be our hope.

  1150. I mean,

  1151. I go back to 2020,

  1152. I mean,

1153. it just kind of seemed like,

  1154. wow,

  1155. that was wild,

  1156. wasn't it?

  1157. Everything we thought

1158. we could kind of anchor

  1159. a little bit to,

1160. even if we knew we shouldn't,

  1161. we think,

  1162. well,

1163. at least we have this,

1164. at least we have that.

  1165. I mean,

  1166. within a week,

1167. this world was turned upside down.

  1168. I don't know if you're like me,

1169. but sometimes you would read it

  1170. and how it says

  1171. when the Antichrist comes

  1172. in the last days,

1173. everybody's going to be deceived.

  1174. You're like,

  1175. how's that even possible?

  1176. I mean,

  1177. the whole world,

  1178. really?

  1179. Well,

1180. it took like six days.

1181. It was almost like a trial run.

  1182. And you're thinking,

  1183. whoa.

  1184. Well,

  1185. we realized this,

1186. and I think it woke

1187. a lot of Christians up,

  1188. like,

  1189. maybe we were trusting

1190. a lot of other things

1191. instead of really placing our trust

  1192. in God.

1193. And Peter kind of wants them

  1194. to understand this.

  1195. And as Christians,

  1196. he's reminding them

1197. that we have a lively hope,

  1198. a hope that doesn't collapse

  1199. when circumstances change,

1200. because they're going to change.

1201. Things that were true last week

1202. probably aren't going to be true this week.

1203. Don't you love watching the news?

1204. They'll come on one week

  1205. and they'll say,

1206. chocolate is the worst thing

1207. you could eat in your life.

1208. And then the next week,

1209. it's obviously slow news week,

1210. they got some guy on there

  1211. that's like 175,

  1212. like,

1213. what's the secret to being in

  1214. and living so long?

  1215. And he's like,

  1216. I eat chocolate

1217. for three meals a day.

1218. And so everybody starts eating chocolate.

  1219. Listen,

1220. the world's truth changes all the time

  1221. and the hope,

  1222. well,

1223. I'm going to try this,

1224. I'm going to hope this.

  1225. Listen,

  1226. I want to hope that's steady.

  1227. I want to hope that's constant.

1228. And that is found in Christ

1229. because he is the same yesterday

  1230. and today and forever.

1231. It's not based on circumstances.

  1232. And Peter wanted them

1233. to be able to hold on to that.

1234. So if our hope is real

  1235. and living and secure,

1236. why do we need it so badly?

  1237. We already have it.

  1238. We already have Christ.

  1239. Well,

  1240. Peter answers that

1241. as we're going to walk through this book.

1242. We're not going to look at every situation tonight

1243. because we're going to do that

1244. over the next few weeks.

  1245. But here's the reason

1246. Peter wants us to understand

  1247. what this hope is

  1248. because we need it

  1249. for the journey.

  1250. Because yes,

1251. there is coming a day

  1252. we will see him.

  1253. We've already said that.

  1254. But until then,

1255. he has a job for us to do here.

1256. He has a life for us to live here.

1257. He's placed you at your work.

1258. He's given you a family to raise.

1259. He's given you an opportunity

1260. to serve in a local church.

  1261. And we see that

1262. and Jesus prayed in John chapter 17

    John 17 chapter mention

1263. that we would be in the world

  1264. but not of it.

1265. That we can't as Christians,

  1266. we can't remove ourselves

1267. and say we're just going to

1268. hang on until Jesus comes.

  1269. No, in fact,

  1270. Jesus says this,

  1271. Occupy till I come.

  1272. Get to work.

  1273. Go ye therefore

  1274. into all the world

  1275. and preach the gospel.

1276. And Peter tells these believers,

1277. if you have your Bible still open

  1278. in chapter 2,

  1279. verse number 11,

  1280. he says this,

  1281. Dearly beloved,

  1282. I beseech you,

  1283. he's begging you,

  1284. he's reminding you

  1285. as strangers

  1286. and pilgrims.

  1287. We already referenced it

1288. and we already sang it.

  1289. But Peter reminded them

1290. just as much as he reminds us today

  1291. through the Holy Spirit

1292. that this world is not our home.

  1293. That we're just on a journey.

1294. That this is not our final destination.

1295. This is not live and let live

1296. because eat, drink and be merry

  1297. because tomorrow we die.

  1298. No, the Bible's clear

  1299. that there's coming a day

1300. where we're all going to stand

  1301. before Christ.

1302. And that we're going to see him.

  1303. And Peter wanted them

  1304. to understand

1305. and we can take this truth

  1306. to our own life.

1307. We're not meant to settle here.

  1308. You know,

1309. it's not he who dies

1310. with the most toys wins.

  1311. We're not living

1312. for the here and now.

  1313. We're not meant

  1314. to plant roots here.

1315. We're meant to store up

  1316. treasure in heaven.

1317. Oh, I love this thought

  1318. that we're here

  1319. to make heaven crowded.

  1320. That the only thing

  1321. that we can take

  1322. is people.

1323. That we share the gospel with.

1324. That it may be sometimes

1325. in the throes of parenting

  1326. and you're thinking,

  1327. is this worth it?

1328. No, it is worth it.

1329. And here's your number one job

1330. to show them who God is.

1331. And to train them up

  1332. in the love

  1333. and the nurture

  1334. and the admonition

  1335. of the Lord

1336. and to shape their hearts

  1337. for eternity.

  1338. At your school,

  1339. it's important

1340. that you live a life

1341. that is pleasing to God

  1342. that others see it

  1343. and say,

  1344. you know what?

  1345. What do you have?

1346. Because even at your school,

1347. guess what a lot of people

  1348. don't have?

  1349. Hope.

1350. You know what some of your coworkers

  1351. are searching for?

  1352. Hope.

1353. Just something they can hang on.

1354. Something that they can just think,

1355. well, if I can just,

  1356. if I have a little something,

1357. even if it's not real,

1358. maybe I can make it

  1359. to tomorrow

  1360. and next week

  1361. and next year.

  1362. Listen,

1363. you have a great opportunity

1364. to share the truth with them.

  1365. But sometimes

  1366. when we forget

  1367. we're on a journey,

  1368. we have a job

1369. that we're called to do

  1370. and we start thinking

  1371. and start looking

  1372. for this heaven-level satisfaction

  1373. from an earth-level world,

  1374. it's going to lead

  1375. to frustration

  1376. and spiritual weariness.

1377. We're going to get frustrated,

  1378. we're going to think,

1379. well, this is just not worth it,

1380. I'm just going to do nothing.

1381. We may not say that out loud,

  1382. but sometimes our life

  1383. lives that way.

  1384. And I think when

1385. we begin to feel that way,

1386. we need to ask ourselves

1387. and we can really ask ourselves

  1388. this every day,

1389. am I living for comfort here

  1390. or for glory later?

  1391. Because sometimes

1392. if we really step back

1393. and we really take inventory

  1394. of our life,

  1395. the reason we're frustrated,

  1396. the reason our hope

  1397. doesn't feel real

  1398. is because we're living

1399. more for the here and now

  1400. than what Christ

  1401. has called us to.

1402. We're more in on this world

1403. than we are on the journey

1404. God has called us on,

  1405. on the mission

1406. that He has placed us in.

  1407. And once you realize

  1408. that you're a pilgrim

  1409. and not a settler,

  1410. it helps you understand

1411. why this is absolutely necessary.

1412. And Peter's going to show us

1413. as we walk through here,

1414. we need it because hope

  1415. is the only thing

  1416. that will sustain us

  1417. on the journey.

1418. It's not going to be your job.

1419. It's not going to be this,

1420. it's not going to be that.

1421. It's going to be the fact

1422. that Jesus Christ loves you,

1423. that He died for you,

1424. that He rose again for you,

  1425. and that hope

  1426. is going to change

1427. how you look at that situation,

  1428. and that health diagnosis,

  1429. and that financial hardship,

  1430. and raising a family,

  1431. and your marriage,

1432. it's going to change everything.

1433. Because that's what Jesus does.

1434. Is Jesus changes all of that.

  1435. Kids these days,

1436. I love to say that,

  1437. you know,

  1438. they have all these

1439. crazy weird games they play,

  1440. and Fortnite,

1441. and all these weird ones,

  1442. and I'm like,

1443. what is even going on?

  1444. They don't know

  1445. that the greatest game

  1446. you could ever play

  1447. in elementary school

1448. was called the Oregon Trail.

  1449. I used to,

  1450. yeah,

  1451. some of you know,

1452. this is going to speak

  1453. to your heart.

1454. I used to rush through my work

1455. so I could play the Oregon Trail.

1456. And I'd get on there,

  1457. and the Oregon Trail,

1458. you type your name in,

1459. and you get your family there,

  1460. and you're super excited.

  1461. It's this little green,

  1462. little wagon

1463. that's going across the thing.

  1464. Man,

  1465. y'all don't even know,

  1466. this is awesome.

  1467. And here's the idea,

  1468. you're hoping

1469. you make it to Oregon.

  1470. You never do.

  1471. Typhoid gets you

  1472. every time.

1473. And then you have to start over,

1474. and then you're on your way again,

  1475. and then you,

1476. every time you go past

  1477. the grave markers,

  1478. it's like,

  1479. Tyler died of typhoid.

1480. So I just started naming

  1481. all my enemies,

  1482. like my sister,

  1483. and my sister,

  1484. and all those people.

  1485. But when you're playing

  1486. that game,

1487. all the hope you had

  1488. fades when your wagon

  1489. breaks,

1490. and the food runs out,

  1491. and the journey

  1492. really becomes hard.

1493. But this is going to

  1494. shock y'all even more.

1495. There was a real Oregon Trail.

1496. Come to find that out.

  1497. And you think,

1498. when you really think about that,

  1499. like,

  1500. it's hard enough on a game.

  1501. I can't imagine

  1502. telling your family here,

1503. I know we live in Tennessee,

  1504. but I've heard about

  1505. this place called Oregon.

1506. We're going to get in a wagon.

1507. You know why they got in a wagon

  1508. and tried to cross

  1509. the entire country,

  1510. tried to go through

  1511. the Rocky Mountains,

  1512. tried to go through

  1513. all of this,

  1514. and travel wasn't easy,

1515. and the reason it wasn't

  1516. is because it was

  1517. a difficult time,

1518. but they did it for this reason,

1519. hope of a better life.

  1520. You know,

  1521. we celebrate Thanksgiving,

  1522. and we go,

  1523. maybe your kids,

  1524. when they were younger

  1525. in school,

1526. they did a little play

  1527. about the pilgrims.

1528. You know why the pilgrims

  1529. came here?

1530. For hope of a better life.

  1531. A chance to worship

  1532. the Lord freely.

1533. Hope is going to do that,

1534. and it just reminds us

  1535. of this great truth,

  1536. that those people

  1537. on that Oregon Trail

  1538. and those pilgrims

  1539. crossing the ocean

  1540. in difficult travel conditions,

  1541. they did it because

  1542. they had a hope,

  1543. and hope does not

  1544. remove the journey,

1545. but it sustained them on it.

  1546. They were looking forward

  1547. to something greater

  1548. and something better,

  1549. and we might be

  1550. on the journey,

1551. and life might get hard,

  1552. and sometimes it feels

  1553. like your wagon's

  1554. breaking down,

1555. and your food's running out,

1556. but here's the beautiful thing,

1557. that we're not settling here,

  1558. we're pressing on.

  1559. We're aiming for Christ,

  1560. and that's what Peter's

  1561. telling them,

  1562. that this lively hope

  1563. that you have,

1564. it's going to carry you through,

1565. and so when life feels hard,

  1566. don't quit.

  1567. Don't give in.

  1568. Just remind yourself,

1569. like Peter's going to remind us

  1570. again and again

  1571. through this little study,

1572. that this is part of the journey.

1573. It's not the end of the story.

1574. No, the end of the story

1575. is when we see our Savior

  1576. face to face.

  1577. When we step into

  1578. the city of God.

1579. But Peter doesn't just tell us

  1580. to endure the journey.

1581. What we're going to walk through

1582. and see is he's going to show us

  1583. how to live faithfully

  1584. while we're on it.

1585. He kind of gives some

  1586. survival instructions,

  1587. because sometimes life

  1588. feels like that.

  1589. We're going to see Peter's

1590. going to give some practical

1591. guidance when it comes to

1592. how to be a godly citizen,

  1593. because they're dealing

  1594. in a situation

  1595. where the government

  1596. is completely against them.

1597. We'll talk about it here

  1598. in a second,

  1599. and he's saying,

  1600. listen,

  1601. that doesn't change

  1602. your responsibility.

  1603. It doesn't change

  1604. the way that you

  1605. should live your life.

  1606. In fact,

1607. you should live your life

1608. in a manner that still

  1609. points to Christ

  1610. and honoring the authority

1611. God has placed in your life.

1612. He's going to deal with

  1613. unfair work conditions.

  1614. You're like,

1615. I'm bringing my boss that day.

1616. Tell me what day that is.

1617. He's going to talk about

1618. how to live among unbelievers.

  1619. He speaks at length

  1620. about that.

  1621. Because the majority

  1622. of his readers

  1623. would have been living

  1624. amongst unbelievers,

  1625. and guess what?

1626. I think we are as well.

  1627. Everywhere we go,

  1628. we meet people.

  1629. We work with them.

1630. We live in the neighborhood

  1631. with them.

1632. They're at the store with us.

1633. How do we live a life

  1634. that points to Christ?

1635. How do we live in a world

1636. but not be of the world?

1637. He talks about honoring God

  1638. in your marriage.

  1639. He talks about loving

  1640. fellow believers.

  1641. Sometimes it's easier

1642. to get along with unbelievers

  1643. than it is believers.

  1644. Yeah.

  1645. Peter addresses that.

  1646. Because it's a practical thing

  1647. that these people needed.

1648. And the idea is this book

  1649. was to give hope

  1650. for the destination

  1651. and wisdom

1652. while you're on the way there.

  1653. That's really what

  1654. the Bible is about.

  1655. But really,

  1656. it's kind of encapsulated

  1657. in here.

  1658. Peter reminds me

1659. of the book of James.

1660. It's short and to the point

  1661. because they didn't have

  1662. any other option

  1663. because life was coming

  1664. at them fast.

  1665. They're scattered abroad.

  1666. Persecution's there.

1667. And even with the hope

  1668. for the journey

  1669. and the instruction

  1670. for the daily living,

  1671. there's one more reality

1672. that Peter kind of hits

1673. and we see it here

  1674. in chapter number 4.

  1675. Here's what he says

  1676. in chapter 4,

  1677. verse number 12.

  1678. He said,

  1679. Beloved,

  1680. talking to believers,

  1681. think it not strange

  1682. concerning the fiery trial

1683. which is to try you

1684. as though some strange thing

  1685. happened unto you.

1686. You know why we need hope?

1687. Because life's going to throw

1688. some fiery trials your way.

  1689. It's going to bring

1690. some things across your desk

1691. that you didn't plan on,

1692. that you didn't sign up for.

  1693. And many times,

1694. you did nothing to bring it on

  1695. but it's just,

1696. we live in a broken world.

  1697. And we mentioned

  1698. at the beginning

1699. that Peter's writing from Rome

  1700. in around 67 AD

  1701. is what many scholars

  1702. would believe.

  1703. But if you studied

  1704. Roman history

  1705. a few years earlier,

  1706. about three years earlier,

  1707. Rome burned under

  1708. an emperor named Nero.

  1709. You know, Nero,

1710. he was not a good guy.

1711. He was all about Nero.

  1712. He was,

1713. even his own Roman citizens

1714. really didn't care for him.

  1715. But when Rome started

  1716. to burn literally

  1717. to the ground

1718. and the fires were taking over,

  1719. Nero needed somebody

  1720. to shoulder the blame.

  1721. Because it definitely

  1722. wasn't his fault.

  1723. And even though

  1724. there's conspiracies

  1725. that he's the one

  1726. that set the blaze

  1727. to build certain things

  1728. he wanted,

  1729. you know,

  1730. he blamed Christians.

  1731. Christians.

  1732. And that's where

  1733. the brunt fell.

1734. And we think to ourselves,

  1735. well, how would

  1736. a lot of people

  1737. believe that?

  1738. William Barclay,

  1739. one of the commentators,

  1740. he points out

  1741. and reminds us

  1742. that Christians

  1743. were already

  1744. the objects

  1745. of slander

  1746. and hostility.

  1747. We said earlier

  1748. as well

  1749. that in the mind

  1750. of Romans

  1751. they were confused

  1752. at what Christians

  1753. really were.

  1754. What they thought

  1755. they were

  1756. was just a different

  1757. sect of Judaism.

  1758. And they knew this,

  1759. we don't like Jews.

  1760. And so there was

  1761. that natural hatred

  1762. for them

1763. and so as a result

1764. they were an easy target.

  1765. Nero kind of pounced

  1766. on it and said,

  1767. listen,

  1768. they're the ones

  1769. that started this.

  1770. They're the ones

  1771. talking about how

  1772. God's going to bring

  1773. judgment

  1774. and they're bringing

  1775. it on Rome

  1776. and because of that

  1777. persecution followed.

  1778. And you study

  1779. what they're dealing

  1780. with just from history.

  1781. Christians were

  1782. burned alive.

  1783. They were torn

  1784. apart by animals.

  1785. They were used

  1786. as sport

  1787. in the Colosseum.

  1788. They were crucified.

  1789. They were tortured.

  1790. And this persecution

  1791. really wasn't limited

  1792. to the city limits

  1793. of Rome.

1794. By the time Paul is,

  1795. I mean Peter is

  1796. writing this letter,

1797. it spread to Asia Minor

  1798. where these believers,

  1799. they had fled Rome

  1800. for their life

  1801. and guess what?

  1802. The persecution

  1803. still followed.

  1804. And with that backdrop

  1805. in mind,

  1806. Peter's words

  1807. kind of carry

  1808. a little bit more

  1809. weight.

  1810. In fact,

  1811. they sound strange.

  1812. He said,

  1813. listen,

  1814. don't think it's strange

  1815. concerning what's

  1816. happening right now.

  1817. He goes on

  1818. in verse number 14.

  1819. If you be reproached

1820. for the name of Christ,

  1821. happy are ye

  1822. for the spirit

  1823. and glory of God

  1824. rest upon you.

  1825. On their part,

1826. he is evil spoken of,

  1827. but on your part

  1828. he is glorified.

  1829. Verse 16,

  1830. he says this,

  1831. yet if any man

  1832. suffer as a Christian,

1833. let him not be ashamed,

1834. but let him glorify God

  1835. on this behalf.

  1836. These are strange words

  1837. unless hope is alive.

1838. Unless Jesus Christ is real.

1839. Unless the tomb is empty.

  1840. See,

1841. these words only make sense

  1842. if this world

  1843. is not your home.

  1844. Our hope is Jesus

1845. who rose from the dead

  1846. and will come again.

  1847. And that's what Peter's

  1848. reminding him.

  1849. It kind of echoes

1850. if it kind of sounds familiar.

1851. It sounds a lot like

  1852. what Jesus said

1853. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  1854. Blessed are ye

  1855. when you are persecuted,

  1856. when you reviled

  1857. for my name's sake.

  1858. Listen,

1859. we're not looking for it,

  1860. but here's the reality.

  1861. Sometimes it comes.

  1862. We can't think,

  1863. I think especially

  1864. in our culture today,

1865. we would just kind of

  1866. associate,

  1867. well if something bad

  1868. is happening

  1869. and then something wrong,

  1870. you must have done

  1871. something wrong.

  1872. I'm going through

1873. the book of Job right now.

  1874. All of Job's friends,

  1875. everybody's like,

  1876. listen Job,

  1877. we like you,

  1878. but you're obviously a sinner.

  1879. Bad things don't happen

  1880. to good people.

  1881. It's like,

  1882. hey,

1883. as long as I come to church

  1884. and I put a little bit

1885. of offering in the plate

  1886. and I do this,

  1887. then everything should be

  1888. good in my life.

  1889. That's not true.

1890. That's nowhere to be found

  1891. in this Bible.

  1892. In this world

  1893. ye shall have tribulation,

1894. but be of good cheer,

  1895. Jesus says,

  1896. for I have overcome

  1897. the world.

  1898. That's exactly what

  1899. Peter's saying here.

1900. We're going to see that

  1901. as we move through

  1902. this book.

  1903. Instead of asking maybe,

1904. Lord, how can I escape this?

1905. Lord, how can I get rid of this?

1906. Lord, how can I just move on

  1907. from this awful situation?

1908. Maybe we need to say,

1909. Lord, how can I glorify you

  1910. in this?

1911. Lord, how do you want to use

1912. my family in this situation?

1913. Lord, what do you want me

1914. to do in this health crisis?

1915. What do you want me to do

  1916. in this financial situation?

  1917. Maybe God has allowed

  1918. some of those things.

1919. I loved when Brother Garrett preached.

1920. Was that last week, I think?

  1921. Yeah.

1922. The Lord burned his battery up

  1923. under warranty

1924. so he could go to AutoZone

  1925. and a guy says,

1926. hey, where do you go to church?

1927. And I loved his transparency.

  1928. I'd be frustrated

1929. when your battery goes out,

  1930. you're like, not again.

  1931. I can't afford this right now.

1932. You know, batteries and tires

  1933. never go out

1934. when you actually have money.

1935. No, it's when you spend

  1936. all your money

1937. and then they're all blowing up

  1938. and everything going.

  1939. Like, Lord, why?

  1940. But sometimes God

  1941. is orchestrating weird things

  1942. and allows weird things

1943. to happen in our life

1944. to put us in a position

  1945. to glorify him.

  1946. And that's what Peter's saying.

  1947. He's reminding us

1948. to ask ourselves that question.

1949. So I just want to ask you,

  1950. believer,

  1951. as we close tonight,

1952. are you living like a pilgrim

  1953. on a journey?

1954. Are you living like this world

  1955. is your home?

1956. Because depending on how you're living

  1957. is going to change

1958. the hope that you have.

  1959. It's going to change

  1960. your perspective.

1961. If you're trying to live

1962. for the here and now,

1963. even if you know Christ,

1964. you're going to be frustrated.

1965. You're going to be tired.

  1966. You're going to be

  1967. just really,

  1968. just downtrodden.

  1969. And I understand,

  1970. I've been there.

  1971. Because sometimes what

  1972. hardship and disappointment does,

  1973. it dulls your hope.

  1974. You know,

1975. every once in a while

1976. I take my glasses off

  1977. and think,

  1978. man,

1979. I need to clean these things.

  1980. No wonder I can't see.

  1981. They're all smudged up

  1982. and everything.

  1983. Sometimes we just need

  1984. to take some time

  1985. and reset.

  1986. Kind of clean off

1987. our lenses of our life,

  1988. so to speak,

  1989. and remember

  1990. that we were begotten

  1991. unto a lively hope.

  1992. Jesus Christ didn't raise

  1993. from the dead

  1994. so we can barely

  1995. scrape by.

  1996. No,

  1997. Jesus Christ is alive

1998. and it made all the difference

  1999. in our life

2000. and here's what he wants us to do.

  2001. Go tell somebody that.

  2002. Live like it's true.

  2003. Live like he's alive.

2004. Take some simple steps this week.

  2005. Find a promise

2006. in the word of God

2007. and anchor your heart in it.

  2008. You're going through something?

  2009. Go to the concordance

  2010. of your Bible.

  2011. Look up that difficulty.

2012. You know what you can find?

2013. Verses that apply to that

  2014. and take it,

2015. post it on your mirror,

  2016. post it on your,

2017. and put it in your car

2018. and wherever you're going to see it

2019. and anchor your hope in that

2020. and remind yourself of that.

2021. Maybe there is some difficulties.

  2022. Reframe it

  2023. in light of eternity.

  2024. You know,

  2025. Paul says this

  2026. when he goes through

  2027. all those difficult things.

  2028. This light affliction.

  2029. Paul,

2030. how can you say that?

2031. Because Paul had a view

  2032. of eternity.

2033. That he wasn't focused here.

  2034. He was pressing

  2035. toward the hope

  2036. that was Jesus Christ.

  2037. That was his goal.

  2038. That was his aim.

2039. We can lift our eyes up.

2040. We can refocus our lives

  2041. because our Savior's alive.

  2042. Maybe you're here

2043. and I know the majority of us here

  2044. we always say

2045. we're preaching to the choir.

  2046. I don't want to ever

  2047. just assume that though.

2048. Maybe you know all about Jesus.

2049. You know some of these verses

  2050. in here

2051. but you don't know him personally.

  2052. There's no lasting hope.

2053. There's just some temporary optimism

  2054. that shows up

2055. every once in a while

  2056. in your life.

2057. I just want to remind you

2058. that Jesus Christ is alive.

  2059. And he didn't

  2060. rise from the grave

2061. so you could just have a

  2062. you could attend church

2063. every once in a while.

  2064. He didn't come

2065. so you could check off

  2066. some boxes.

  2067. He came to have

2068. a real relationship with you.

  2069. We talked this morning

2070. that we can cry out

  2071. Abba Father.

2072. We can run to him.

  2073. We can find comfort

  2074. and dependence

2075. and hope for the journey.

2076. And if you don't know Christ

2077. and you've been battling with it

2078. and you've been placing it

  2079. in the fact that

  2080. I'm a church member

  2081. I'm a good person

  2082. I'm a Christian

  2083. I do Christian things

  2084. your hope's not secure

2085. because it's based on you

  2086. not him.

  2087. Turn to Christ.

2088. So we're going to see

  2089. through this book

2090. as we see in our own lives

2091. this world may shake us.

  2092. The journey

2093. it's going to wear you down.

  2094. And the trials

2095. sometimes they're going to feel

2096. like they test you up

  2097. to your absolute limit.

  2098. But step back

  2099. and remember

  2100. hope is alive

  2101. because he's alive.

  2102. That's our God.

2103. Would you stand with your heads bowed

  2104. with your eyes closed?

  2105. next slide slide

  2106. Thank you.
