  1. Here in Luke chapter 11, verse 45, the Bible says this,

    Luke 11:45

  2. Then answered one of the lawyers and said unto him,

  3. Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.

  4. And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers.

  5. Maybe this guy should have just kept his mouth shut.

  6. For ye laid men with burdens grievous to be born,

  7. and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

  8. Woe unto you, for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets,

  9. and your fathers killed them.

  10. Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers,

  11. for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.

  12. Therefore also said the wisdom of God,

  13. I will send them prophets and apostles,

  14. and some of them they shall slay and persecute.

  15. That the blood of all the prophets,

  16. which was shed from the foundation of the world,

  17. may be required of this generation.

  18. From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias,

  19. which would perish between the altar and the temple,

  20. verily I say unto you,

  21. it shall be required of this generation.

  22. Woe unto you, lawyers,

  23. for you have taken away the key of knowledge.

  24. Ye entered not in yourselves,

  25. and them that were entering in,

  26. ye hindered.

  27. And as he said these things unto him,

  28. the scribes and the Pharisees

  29. began to urge him vehemently,

  30. and to provoke him to speak of many things.

  31. It wasn't because they wanted to learn.

  32. Look what verse 54 says.

  33. Lying wait for him,

  34. and seeking to catch something out of his mouth,

  35. that they might accuse him.

  36. We're going to preach a message entitled this,

  37. Heavy Burdens and Hardened Hearts.

  38. See, the Pharisees,

  39. they had their own way,

  40. and their own situation.

  41. They were saying,

  42. look how good we are on the outside.

  43. Look how clean our hands are.

  44. And Jesus said,

  45. look how dirty your heart is though.

  46. You're dead on the inside.

  47. They had made religion about

  48. just this outside facade,

  49. and that's why Jesus multiple times said,

  50. hey, you're hypocrites.

  51. You're saying one thing,

  52. but you're really another.

  53. And now he's kind of shifting directions

  54. here to these lawyers

  55. that were there to help people

  56. know the word of God.

  57. He said, listen, you've missed it.

  58. You're weighing people down

  59. and making it extremely difficult

  60. for them to find God.

  61. And he said, that's a dangerous place to be.

  62. When religion replaces grace,

  63. it crushes people.

  64. And that's what Jesus is teaching us

  65. right here this morning.

  66. So let's ask him to help us

  67. as we jump into the sermon.

  68. Father, thank you for this day.

  69. Lord, thank you for your word

  70. that we can open this morning.

  71. Thank you for the songs

  72. that remind us of your goodness to us.

  73. And as Brother Cliff just sang,

  74. Lord, I'm so thankful

  75. you've been good to me.

  76. Lord, I'm thankful you've been good

  77. to every single person

  78. in this audience.

  79. The fact that we're here today

  80. to hear the word of God

  81. is a blessing.

  82. Lord, I pray that you would speak

  83. to hearts as need be, Lord,

  84. that you would meet us

  85. where we are.

  86. If there's somebody

  87. that doesn't know you as Savior, Lord,

  88. that today would be that day.

  89. Lord, I pray you would help me, Lord.

  90. I need you.

  91. I need you to clear my thoughts

  92. and my mind, Lord.

  93. I pray you'd give me the words to say.

  94. That it would be a help

  95. to the hearer today.

  96. And we ask all these things

  97. in your son's precious name.

  98. Amen.

  99. Thank you so much for standing.

  100. May be seated.

  101. Have you ever tried

  102. to help somebody

  103. and they did not receive it

  104. as help?

  105. You ever, like,

  106. try to be a nice citizen,

  107. a nice neighbor on the road,

  108. so to speak,

  109. and you're driving up there

  110. and you see somebody's gas caps open

  111. and you try to roll down

  112. and you're like,

  113. your gas cap's open.

  114. And then they look at you

  115. like you've just insulted

  116. their entire family lineage.

  117. Like, bro,

  118. I'm just trying to help you.

  119. You know,

  120. let them know,

  121. hey,

  122. your blinker's still on,

  123. you know,

  124. because like,

  125. I don't want everybody else

  126. to be as mad at you

  127. as I was.

  128. You know,

  129. because I was behind somebody

  130. yesterday

  131. and I kept slowing down,

  132. slowing down.

  133. I'm like,

  134. their blinker's been on

  135. for two miles.

  136. I'm like,

  137. I couldn't get around

  138. and I'm like,

  139. and you know,

  140. it's just,

  141. I tried to be in the spirit

  142. but I really wasn't.

  143. I mean,

  144. the idea is,

  145. you weren't wrong

  146. and maybe you weren't

  147. even mean about it.

  148. You were just right.

  149. And somehow,

  150. that made it worse.

  151. Because I think

  152. we can all relate to that

  153. because I think,

  154. you know,

  155. we've all been

  156. on the other end as well.

  157. That we've been corrected

  158. by somebody,

  159. we've been trying to,

  160. they may be trying to help us

  161. and it just hit a nerve.

  162. Not because they were wrong,

  163. because they were dead

  164. on the money.

  165. And we didn't like that.

  166. We didn't like how that felt

  167. and why is that?

  168. Why is it sometimes

  169. when somebody's trying to help us

  170. and they're trying to correct us

  171. and they're trying to show us

  172. the truth,

  173. it hits a nerve.

  174. I think because sometimes

  175. it's not just confronting behavior,

  176. it's exposing what's really

  177. in our heart.

  178. I think that's what it is.

  179. It really,

  180. it gets down in there

  181. and we don't necessarily

  182. like that.

  183. And as we saw last week

  184. if you were here

  185. in verses 37 through 44

  186. and we see again,

  187. that's exactly

  188. what's taking place.

  189. These Pharisees,

  190. they were there

  191. and it seemed like

  192. they were always kind of

  193. in the shadows.

  194. They were always kind of

  195. lurking behind

  196. seeing what Jesus

  197. was going to do.

  198. And they took opportunities

  199. like that Pharisee did last week.

  200. He said,

  201. hey man,

  202. I'd love to have you

  203. over for lunch.

  204. And it wasn't a friendly invitation.

  205. That's what he wanted it

  206. to seem like.

  207. But really,

  208. he was looking for

  209. an opportunity

  210. to kind of really

  211. get in there

  212. and find something wrong

  213. with Jesus.

  214. We saw it at the end

  215. of our text here today.

  216. They were looking for something

  217. to come out of his mouth,

  218. the Bible said,

  219. so they could just

  220. nail him on it.

  221. They could find

  222. this situation.

  223. And so really,

  224. what he did is

  225. he confronted these Pharisees

  226. about their hypocrisy.

  227. He said,

  228. listen man,

  229. you're so excited

  230. that you're so clean

  231. on the outside.

  232. And you're following

  233. all of these ceremonial

  234. washing laws.

  235. And Jesus went to dinner

  236. and didn't wash his hands.

  237. I mean,

  238. and they just lost

  239. their marbles.

  240. And he said,

  241. you're so worried

  242. about the outside

  243. of the cup.

  244. What's going on

  245. on the inside?

  246. And he really exposed

  247. their hypocrisy.

  248. You know,

  249. there are certain times

  250. in life when maybe

  251. the room is tense,

  252. you shouldn't say something.

  253. But you all know somebody,

  254. and maybe you are

  255. that somebody,

  256. you're like,

  257. I'm going to say it.

  258. You're like,

  259. don't say it.

  260. And maybe your inner self

  261. is saying,

  262. don't say it.

  263. And you're like,

  264. hey,

  265. we don't like how

  266. you're treating our friends.

  267. Because that's what

  268. the lawyer did right here.

  269. That's what verse number 45,

  270. he said,

  271. master,

  272. thus saying,

  273. thou reproachest also.

  274. He said,

  275. hey,

  276. you can't say that.

  277. Who do you think you are?

  278. That's basically

  279. what this man is saying.

  280. That's kind of the idea

  281. and the tone

  282. that he comes with.

  283. And he's really saying,

  284. Jesus,

  285. when you rebuke them,

  286. I don't know if you know this,

  287. but you're rebuking us also

  288. and we don't like it.

  289. You're really mean.

  290. I mean,

  291. that's kind of what's going on here.

  292. That's kind of the attitude here.

  293. So who are these lawyers?

  294. The Bible says that,

  295. then answered one of the lawyers,

  296. now they're not attorneys

  297. like we would think of today.

  298. This is not a man

  299. that would represent you

  300. in a legal case

  301. before a judge.

  302. No,

  303. these lawyers

  304. were experts

  305. in the law of Moses.

  306. The law that Jesus

  307. just kind of offended

  308. and didn't wash his hands

  309. ceremonially,

  310. they were the ones

  311. that interpreted scripture.

  312. These were the men,

  313. these lawyers,

  314. were those that taught people

  315. how to live out

  316. the word of God.

  317. Here's the problem though,

  318. just kind of recap

  319. a little bit last week.

  320. They took the word of God

  321. and then they added

  322. a whole bunch of things

  323. onto the word of God

  324. and said,

  325. this is the word of God too.

  326. They had built this crust

  327. around the law of God

  328. so they wouldn't

  329. break one single law.

  330. And yet,

  331. they were weighing

  332. these people down.

  333. See,

  334. the idea behind this lawyer

  335. and his group of friends,

  336. they didn't just study

  337. the Bible,

  338. they were the experts on it.

  339. They didn't have Google

  340. back then.

  341. If you had a question,

  342. you couldn't Google it,

  343. you had to go ask

  344. one of these guys.

  345. You had to run it

  346. through him,

  347. you had to make sure

  348. that you were doing

  349. all the things

  350. that you were supposed to

  351. and he was the one

  352. that would tell you.

  353. And as Jesus is confronting

  354. the Pharisees,

  355. they quickly realize,

  356. I think he's talking about us.

  357. You ever been in a situation

  358. like that?

  359. Somebody's talking like,

  360. is he talking about me?

  361. And that's kind of

  362. where he's at

  363. and he's there

  364. and he's hearing this.

  365. But instead of repenting,

  366. instead of realizing,

  367. you know what?

  368. Maybe I've kind of

  369. missed the mark a little bit.

  370. Maybe I'm not exactly

  371. where I should be

  372. and maybe I should re-evaluate

  373. how I'm teaching the law

  374. and what exactly

  375. the law says.

  376. No,

  377. he begins to defend himself.

  378. And that's a natural

  379. human reaction,

  380. isn't it?

  381. When we are called

  382. on the carpet,

  383. so to speak,

  384. even if they're right,

  385. I'm going to fight it

  386. tooth and nail

  387. to make sure that I win.

  388. Okay,

  389. come on,

  390. don't act like you

  391. don't do that.

  392. And that's when Jesus

  393. turns to him

  394. in verse 46

  395. and begins to

  396. directly warn them.

  397. And it's not just

  398. a warning for them

  399. because sometimes

  400. we look and say,

  401. well,

  402. I'm not a Pharisee,

  403. I'm not a lawyer like this.

  404. But I think we saw last week

  405. and I think we're going

  406. to see this week as well

  407. that sometimes we can

  408. kind of slide into

  409. the same things

  410. they're dealing with.

  411. You know why?

  412. Because that's where

  413. our heart likes to go.

  414. We like to prop

  415. our own selves up.

  416. We want to make sure

  417. that we're the ones

  418. that are in control

  419. and here's kind of

  420. the truth,

  421. the main truth

  422. of this text this morning

  423. is that when religion

  424. becomes about control

  425. instead of about compassion,

  426. it crushes people

  427. instead of actually

  428. changing them.

  429. Jesus didn't come

  430. to crush people.

  431. No,

  432. Jesus came to seek

  433. and to save

  434. that which was lost.

  435. Now,

  436. don't misunderstand.

  437. I don't have a lot of time

  438. to go into this.

  439. It's not all about

  440. just love everybody

  441. and compassion.

  442. No,

  443. Jesus is full of grace

  444. and truth.

  445. So we just want to make sure

  446. that's clear on the top.

  447. Jesus isn't saying,

  448. well,

  449. just as long as you love,

  450. you're okay.

  451. No,

  452. there are some boundaries

  453. and the law is good

  454. and the law teaches us

  455. those certain things

  456. but there are many things here

  457. that they were adding to it

  458. that wasn't about God,

  459. it was about them

  460. and keeping their finger

  461. on the people,

  462. so to speak.

  463. Because the law

  464. that they loved so dearly,

  465. that they studied so intently,

  466. they had given their life for,

  467. it had this one goal

  468. to lead people to God.

  469. When you look at the Old Testament,

  470. you look at the law of Moses,

  471. it wasn't a bunch of laws

  472. and rules that you had to follow.

  473. It was pointing to Jesus.

  474. It was pointing to

  475. there was a coming Messiah

  476. that would change their life

  477. and it helped them live their life

  478. in such a way

  479. that they could come

  480. and have fellowship with God.

  481. Listen,

  482. when you read through Leviticus

  483. and you read through

  484. some of these books,

  485. you think,

  486. man,

  487. this is so weird,

  488. it's so boring.

  489. No,

  490. you know what it should do?

  491. It should encourage your heart

  492. that God wants to be close to you.

  493. That he made a way

  494. and that he brought it down together

  495. and you have an opportunity

  496. to know God.

  497. That's what the whole word of God is.

  498. It's so we might know him.

  499. It's his love letter to mankind,

  500. his redemptive narrative

  501. because that has always been the plan

  502. that Jesus came to seek

  503. and to save that which was lost.

  504. Not to give us a hundred million rules

  505. so we can work our way to heaven.

  506. There is nothing you can do.

  507. He already did it.

  508. That's what the cross is about.

  509. That's why he gave his life

  510. on the cross of Calvary.

  511. But instead of leading people to God

  512. by the word that they knew inside and out,

  513. they were actually using it

  514. to weigh people down.

  515. To get them kind of in a place

  516. where they thought,

  517. this is not possible.

  518. And as we walk through this text today,

  519. what we're going to find is

  520. Jesus exposes three dangers

  521. of legalistic religion.

  522. We hear that term thrown out all the time

  523. and I want us to hang on

  524. and we're going to see exactly

  525. what he's talking about.

  526. Here's the first danger

  527. of legalistic religion.

  528. It loads people with burdens

  529. but offers no help with them.

  530. Look at verse number 46.

  531. And he said,

  532. Woe unto you also, ye lawyers,

  533. for ye laid men with burdens

  534. grievous to be born,

  535. and ye yourselves touch not the burdens

  536. with one of your fingers.

  537. When Jesus gets in these conversations,

  538. we'll say,

  539. with these Pharisees and these lawyers,

  540. he doesn't really beat around the bush.

  541. He said,

  542. Here's the problem that I have with you,

  543. you lawyers,

  544. is you pile rule upon rule upon rule.

  545. You pile expectation upon expectation

  546. and standard upon standard,

  547. and there's nothing wrong with rules

  548. and expectations and standards,

  549. but here's what they did.

  550. They demanded perfection

  551. and offered no grace.

  552. They acted like,

  553. Well, we keep these,

  554. and what's wrong with you people?

  555. Here's the truth.

  556. They didn't keep them either.

  557. On the outside,

  558. they looked real good in public.

  559. They looked real good in certain situations,

  560. and when Jesus said

  561. they were loading these people down with burdens,

  562. he was not exaggerating.

  563. I'm not going to bore you with it,

  564. but they really had taken the law of God,

  565. which was good and holy,

  566. which was good and holy.

  567. Don't misunderstand that.

  568. We're not throwing the law away.

  569. Jesus didn't come to destroy the law.

  570. He came to fulfill the law.

  571. He's the one that made the way for us.

  572. No, it's a good and it's a holy thing,

  573. but they built this extra crust of rules around it

  574. to protect it.

  575. And that may have been the heart at the beginning,

  576. but as we said last week,

  577. by this point,

  578. it's all about them keeping control.

  579. It's about their ability to rule the people,

  580. and over time,

  581. that crust grew thicker and heavier.

  582. And by this time,

  583. there had been thousands of additional regulations.

  584. Just to give an example,

  585. so we understand kind of what Jesus is saying.

  586. Exodus chapter 20,

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  587. there in the Ten Commandments,

  588. he said this,

  589. Remember the Sabbath day,

  590. and keep it holy.

  591. And he goes on to say,

  592. Thou shalt not do any work.

  593. And really what they did is they said,

  594. That's a great law.

  595. Obviously the Lord gave it.

  596. But we're going to protect that law.

  597. And so they took that law of keeping the Sabbath,

  598. and they created 39 categories of forbidden work,

  599. and then endless subcategories under that.

  600. Sounds exciting, doesn't it?

  601. You know, I have a hard enough time with the speed limit.

  602. And I'm like,

  603. Does it really mean 75?

  604. You know,

  605. I want to,

  606. we've got all these subcategories under it.

  607. You know,

  608. they took something that was obvious,

  609. just do this,

  610. and they said,

  611. Well, we need to help people understand

  612. exactly what this means.

  613. To give you an idea of how ridiculous it was,

  614. one of the rules said that

  615. you couldn't carry anything more on the Sabbath

  616. than a dried fig.

  617. Obviously it doesn't weigh very much.

  618. So if you carried,

  619. if it weighed less than a dry fig,

  620. you're okay.

  621. But if it weighed more than a dried fig,

  622. then you were carrying a burden,

  623. and you broke the law.

  624. Here's what they said,

  625. If you carried something less than a dry fig,

  626. you put it down,

  627. and you picked it back up,

  628. now you've doubled the weight,

  629. and now it's a burden.

  630. Isn't that stupid?

  631. Now we're not probably supposed to say that in church,

  632. but I just did.

  633. That's what it is.

  634. And I just want us to kind of

  635. put ourselves where they are.

  636. They even debated

  637. how you should carry something.

  638. Well, if you carry it in your hand,

  639. then you're working,

  640. but if you put it under your arm,

  641. you're not working.

  642. You know, if you carry it on your back,

  643. and what's the situation there?

  644. Can you imagine living like that?

  645. I mean, you have to walk around with a scale.

  646. How much does this weigh?

  647. Oh man, I can't carry that.

  648. I mean, you're constantly calculating.

  649. You're constantly anxious.

  650. You're constantly wondering,

  651. did I just break another rule?

  652. And by this point,

  653. some people just got to the place where,

  654. who cares?

  655. Well, I'm not even going to follow this,

  656. if this is what God is about.

  657. I want no part about this.

  658. And the idea with these lawyers

  659. is they had made religion exceedingly exhausting.

  660. They think, man, I'm not going to church

  661. if that's what it's about.

  662. I'm not going to synagogue.

  663. I mean, what's the point of all of this?

  664. Why is it so difficult?

  665. And here's what made it worse

  666. in Jesus' estimation.

  667. At the end of the verse, he says,

  668. and you won't even touch it

  669. with one of your fingers.

  670. You make all these rules

  671. for everybody else to follow,

  672. but you make all the loopholes.

  673. See, they had a loophole

  674. to get around all of this.

  675. Well, we can do this

  676. because of this, this, and this.

  677. You couldn't walk a certain amount

  678. of feet from your house.

  679. So what they would do

  680. is they would tie a rope

  681. on their ankle,

  682. and they would walk around,

  683. and they're still connected to their house

  684. so those feet don't actually count.

  685. But they're lawyers,

  686. and so they know.

  687. You know, has anybody

  688. ever tried to read lawyer speak today?

  689. I mean, it used to be like,

  690. you know, my grandpa's like,

  691. I'll just shake somebody's hand,

  692. and that was all you needed.

  693. Now you like,

  694. you just go and try to buy a meal.

  695. You've got to sign a contract.

  696. You're like, what does this all mean?

  697. That's how they lived their life

  698. when it came to serving God.

  699. That's the burdens

  700. that they had been placed on.

  701. And the very men who made the rules

  702. did not help the people carry them.

  703. They didn't walk beside them.

  704. They didn't encourage them.

  705. They didn't show any ounce of compassion.

  706. They just demanded compliance

  707. as they said, we love you.

  708. We're here as shepherds of Israel.

  709. We love the law of Moses.

  710. We love Moses.

  711. We love David.

  712. We love all these prophets

  713. that we're going to see in a second.

  714. They weren't shepherding.

  715. They were controlling the people.

  716. And that's why when Jesus showed up,

  717. he had compassion.

  718. He saw them as sheep without a shepherd

  719. and he called them to himself

  720. and he was taking those burdens

  721. because that's what a good shepherd does.

  722. You read John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  723. Jesus just lays into him.

  724. He says, here's the problem.

  725. You're a hireling.

  726. You're in it for the money.

  727. You're in it to get what you can get

  728. out of these sheep

  729. and then you're going to leave them

  730. on the side of the road.

  731. I'm the good shepherd.

  732. I'm the one that loves the sheep

  733. and I will lay down my life.

  734. And that's what Jesus is showing us right here.

  735. And I want to just remind us today

  736. that legalism is still alive and well

  737. and it still adds weight.

  738. Because you know what it does?

  739. It makes following God feel impossible.

  740. It replaces the joy that Jesus offers

  741. and reminds us that's available

  742. for all that are in him.

  743. It replaces that with pressure.

  744. It replaces relationship with performance.

  745. Listen, your Christian life

  746. is not based on all the things you do.

  747. God doesn't love you more the more you do.

  748. Should you serve the Lord?

  749. Should you do things?

  750. Absolutely.

  751. You know why?

  752. Because he loves you.

  753. Because he died for you.

  754. Because he changed your life.

  755. And you look at your life

  756. and you think about that song

  757. Brother Cliff said

  758. and you realize this,

  759. God's been good.

  760. And you think of that,

  761. if God's been this good to me

  762. then you know what,

  763. maybe I can help somebody else

  764. see that God's good to them too.

  765. And that's why we live the life

  766. that we live.

  767. And if people feel crushed

  768. instead of encouraged by our faith,

  769. something is wrong.

  770. It's wrong.

  771. We need to know that your coworkers,

  772. your friends at school,

  773. need to know that Jesus is in there

  774. just to throw a whole bunch of rules at you.

  775. You ever ask somebody,

  776. hey, you go to church,

  777. I'm just not into all those thou shalt nots.

  778. But you know what?

  779. When you really see the heart of Christ,

  780. John tells us in 1 John,

  781. his commandments aren't grievous.

  782. They're not burdensome.

  783. You know, you begin to realize

  784. the closer you get to Christ,

  785. actually the law was given

  786. because God loves me.

  787. Because he wants me to know him more.

  788. He wants me to trust him more.

  789. And that's why Jesus said later on,

  790. come unto me all you that are labor and heavy laden

  791. and I will give you rest.

  792. For my yoke is easy

  793. and my burden is light.

  794. That's not the Pharisees' law.

  795. That's not the lawyers that said,

  796. hey, you come on,

  797. we're going to make sure

  798. you're doing everything right.

  799. Jesus said, that's not how it goes.

  800. That's not what he was searching for.

  801. Listen, Jesus didn't come offering more rules.

  802. He came offering rest for your soul.

  803. And the same is true today.

  804. Jesus didn't call us to weigh people down.

  805. He called us to point others to him

  806. and say, he's the way,

  807. he's the truth,

  808. he's the life.

  809. Go to him.

  810. Run to him.

  811. If you're looking for rest.

  812. And Jesus shows us that it wasn't just about

  813. these heavy rules they placed on him.

  814. It was about their hardened hearts.

  815. Because legalistic religion,

  816. number two, it does this.

  817. It honors the messengers,

  818. but ignores the message.

  819. That's what we see in those verses,

  820. in verses 47 through 51.

  821. We won't take time to read it again.

  822. But here's the idea.

  823. Jesus is saying, listen,

  824. you build all the tombs for the prophets.

  825. You make sure their graves are looking real pretty

  826. and you decorate them

  827. and you honor the men that God used in the past.

  828. But don't miss what he said.

  829. He said, you're the sons of the very people

  830. that killed them.

  831. We think, well, it's not their fault.

  832. And here's what Jesus is saying,

  833. and you're just like them.

  834. You want to act like you're not

  835. because you're honoring them.

  836. You celebrate the dead prophets

  837. and you resist the living truth.

  838. Because you know what the prophets were speaking of?

  839. You know what they were teaching about?

  840. You know what they were reminding the people?

  841. Jesus is coming.

  842. There is a prophet coming.

  843. There is the Messiah coming.

  844. And Jesus says, I'm here

  845. and you're resisting me.

  846. All the things Moses talked about,

  847. all the things David talked about,

  848. all the things you find in the Old Testament,

  849. it's just a shadow of what is coming.

  850. And he says, I'm here.

  851. And they said, we don't like it.

  852. You know, we love Moses.

  853. We love Abraham.

  854. We love all these men.

  855. But listen, let's just keep them there.

  856. Let's just honor what they did.

  857. You see, they admired the message,

  858. the messenger, but rejected the message.

  859. And when you read these verses,

  860. it seems like Jesus is being really,

  861. really unfair to them.

  862. Like, why wouldn't you honor the prophets?

  863. Because Jesus, what he's showing us,

  864. he was exposing something deeper.

  865. He said, listen, the monuments are beautiful.

  866. I mean, we go all around,

  867. you can go all around the world

  868. and you see all these monuments,

  869. but it's not about what's on the outside.

  870. He says, you build them

  871. to keep the prophets safely in the past.

  872. You want to act with your lips.

  873. You got a bunch of lip service,

  874. but you don't really believe anything they said.

  875. You don't really believe Abraham and Moses

  876. because if you did,

  877. you wouldn't leave their life like this.

  878. You wouldn't be following like this.

  879. I love how one commentator said,

  880. he said, your fathers killed the prophets

  881. and you make sure they're dead.

  882. That's what Jesus is telling them right here.

  883. See, kind of what Jesus is saying is this,

  884. you honor them where they can't confront you.

  885. You know what they would say?

  886. They would lift up all the laws of Moses

  887. they followed to a T,

  888. but they wouldn't speak of the other ones.

  889. They wouldn't talk about mercy and grace

  890. in the Old Testament.

  891. They wouldn't live there.

  892. You celebrate them

  893. because they can't correct you in certain areas.

  894. You remember where they can't tell you

  895. to repent of it.

  896. The idea is just this,

  897. they honored the messenger,

  898. but murdered the message.

  899. Listen, the word of God is not something

  900. we can say, well, I love this in the past

  901. and let's celebrate this.

  902. No, here's what we live by.

  903. The word of God.

  904. That's what Jesus is saying.

  905. He said, you're so worried about tradition

  906. and monuments

  907. and you got everything in order

  908. and this is for David

  909. and this is for Moses,

  910. this is for Abraham.

  911. He said, what about the truth

  912. that's in front of your face right now?

  913. That's kind of what Jesus is saying.

  914. And he's reminding them,

  915. you can't really defend yourself

  916. because your present actions

  917. are proving what is true.

  918. They weren't about the word of God.

  919. Even though they were so-called experts in it.

  920. See, the very,

  921. what he's saying is the very ones

  922. who claimed to love God's word

  923. were the ones silencing it.

  924. They had locked it up.

  925. They had made it where it's

  926. only by their interpretation.

  927. They weren't different from their fathers.

  928. In fact, Jesus says,

  929. you're just partners in crime with them.

  930. That you've made the word of God

  931. difficult to reach.

  932. And he says, because of that,

  933. you're going to have even

  934. a greater condemnation.

  935. Because you remember,

  936. it's been a while,

  937. but a few weeks back,

  938. he said, listen,

  939. you have a great light.

  940. Think about all the things they've had.

  941. They had the word of God.

  942. They had the Old Testament.

  943. They had the prophets.

  944. They had John the Baptist.

  945. They had soon to be the apostles.

  946. Their responsibility was even greater.

  947. And these self-proclaimed guardians

  948. of the word of God

  949. were the ones killing the word of God.

  950. That the everyday person

  951. in Jesus' day,

  952. they didn't really know

  953. what God's word said,

  954. but they know what the lawyers said.

  955. That's why Jesus comes and says,

  956. listen, I know you've heard it said

  957. when he's preaching.

  958. He's preaching to common people

  959. like me and you.

  960. I know what you've heard it said

  961. from the lawyers and Pharisees,

  962. but I want to tell you

  963. what the truth is.

  964. I want to tell you

  965. how you're supposed

  966. to live your life.

  967. You think, well,

  968. how does this really apply to us?

  969. I think sometimes in our own lives,

  970. it's easier to honor

  971. spiritual heroes of the past

  972. than obey God's word today

  973. in our own life.

  974. It's okay to honor people

  975. and be thankful.

  976. I'm thankful for men and women

  977. that made this possible

  978. that we can gather here

  979. at a beautiful church building.

  980. But we can't live in the past

  981. at Central Baptist Church.

  982. We can't live in the past

  983. in our own life.

  984. No, what does the word of God say today?

  985. You know why God used these men and women

  986. in our own church

  987. all these years ago?

  988. Because they obeyed the word of God.

  989. That we have to do

  990. the very same thing.

  991. We can love revival stories.

  992. We can listen to famous sermons.

  993. We know great men of faith

  994. and all of those have their place.

  995. But God is still speaking today

  996. and obedience still matters.

  997. That's what Jesus is saying.

  998. We can build great monuments

  999. about how awesome it used to be.

  1000. Listen, the same God

1001. is still working in your life today.

1002. Listen, I'm thankful for revivals

1003. that happened in the past.

1004. I'm thankful for great sermons

1005. that I can go online

1006. and listen to from great men of God.

1007. But I'm thankful that God

1008. still wants to use my life.

1009. That God still wants to have

  1010. a revival today.

1011. That God still is saving souls

  1012. and changing lives

  1013. and restoring relationships

  1014. and mending marriages.

1015. I'm thankful God still does that.

  1016. Why?

1017. Because the word of God

  1018. is still alive.

  1019. It's still powerful.

  1020. Listen, we can celebrate

  1021. the truth so often

  1022. without submitting to it.

1023. And when we do that,

1024. it's just modern day tomb building.

  1025. Then we say,

1026. well, we love all these things.

1027. Well, you should love those things.

1028. God used them in your life.

1029. But what are you doing right now?

1030. How are you letting God

1031. work in your life right now?

  1032. See, then Jesus,

1033. he exposes the deepest danger of all

1034. when it comes to legalistic religion.

1035. We see it in verse 52.

  1036. Here's what it does.

1037. It blocks people from God

1038. instead of leading them to him.

1039. That's really what it does.

  1040. Look at verse 52.

  1041. Woe unto you lawyers,

1042. for you have taken away

  1043. the key of knowledge.

1044. Ye entered not in yourselves,

1045. and them that were entering in,

  1046. ye hindered.

1047. I mean, really what's been taking place

1048. since verse 37 of this chapter,

1049. I mean, Jesus has been throwing haymakers,

  1050. and he's landing them.

  1051. They don't like him.

1052. He kind of throws one final haymaker,

  1053. and he's saying,

1054. listen, these experts of the law,

1055. they didn't just unlock the truth for the people.

  1056. They completely complicated it.

1057. They had no idea what they were supposed to do.

  1058. They begin to wonder,

1059. does God even love me?

1060. I mean, how can God love me?

1061. I failed how many laws this week?

1062. I can imagine living in this time frame.

1063. I mean, I would just be like,

  1064. I couldn't, there's no way I can,

  1065. I mean, 10,

1066. we have a hard enough time with 10.

1067. I mean, just think if there was 39 categories

1068. with subcategories and this and that,

  1069. I mean, you wouldn't even know

  1070. you're breaking the law.

1071. And you would think to yourself,

1072. there's no way God can love me.

1073. How can God love somebody like this?

1074. Because their job was to point people to God,

1075. but here's what they were doing,

1076. standing in the doorway and blocking the way.

1077. Hey, you can't come in here.

1078. Only the lawyers and the Pharisees,

1079. only the people that really love God,

1080. only the people that follow all the laws of Moses

1081. are allowed to come in this door.

  1082. That's why Jesus,

1083. if you kind of hope you're piecing together,

1084. he says, I am the door.

1085. That's where you're supposed to enter in.

1086. That these men knew what the door was,

1087. but if people walked through it,

1088. then they would lose some power.

1089. They would lose some ability.

1090. They would lose some sway over these people.

1091. Think, how are they blocking the door?

1092. Many of these laws weren't the law of God.

  1093. They were man-made rules.

1094. They were blocking the door through their own pride

1095. and their own spiritual control.

1096. These men had laid burdens on God

1097. that made God feel unreachable.

  1098. Listen, God's not unreachable.

1099. In fact, for God so loved the world

  1100. that he came,

1101. that he sent his only begotten son,

1102. that Jesus made a way.

1103. In verse 52, he says,

1104. listen, you had the key of knowledge

1105. and you took it away.

1106. You say, what's the key?

  1107. What's Jesus talking about?

  1108. This right here.

1109. Listen, you should be so thankful

1110. that you have one of these right here.

1111. I mean, you study even history.

  1112. This doesn't even,

  1113. after the first century,

  1114. you know what?

  1115. It was really difficult

1116. to just find the word of God

  1117. at times in history.

1118. Think of the dark ages

1119. and they would lock it up

1120. and only the priests could do that.

  1121. Listen, thank the Lord

1122. you have your own copy.

1123. And you should bring it

1124. and you should study it yourself.

1125. And sometimes if I say something,

  1126. you're like,

1127. preacher, what did you say?

  1128. Listen, study it yourself.

1129. I don't have the corner of the market

1130. of the word of God, by the way.

1131. You all have the ability to do that

1132. and we should love it.

1133. We should be thankful for it.

1134. I mean, you can have it on your phone.

  1135. Isn't that awesome?

1136. Don't be texting your friends right now.

1137. I mean, it's so accessible to us.

1138. Do not ever take that for granted.

1139. That you have the word of God.

1140. That you don't have to wait and say,

1141. wonder what the priest says,

1142. wonder what the lawyer says.

1143. No, what does the word of God say?

1144. You can go right to it

1145. and you should be so thankful for that.

  1146. And instead of opening

1147. the word of God to people,

  1148. they buried it

  1149. under traditions

  1150. and under interpretations

1151. and under a religious system.

  1152. And Jesus says,

1153. listen, the tragedy is twofold.

1154. Number one, he tells the lawyer,

1155. you have the word of God

1156. and you're not even entering

1157. into the kingdom of heaven.

1158. He said, you have the map

1159. and you missed the turn.

1160. And not only did they not enter in,

1161. they were making it harder and harder

1162. for others to enter in.

1163. He said, that's a dangerous place to be.

1164. See, the warning especially speaks

1165. to those who teach the word of God.

1166. Not everybody's called to be a pastor.

  1167. But as a pastor,

  1168. I am not called,

1169. I just want to make sure we understand this,

1170. I am not called to preach my opinions

  1171. about the Bible.

  1172. I don't think you came here

  1173. to hear my opinions.

  1174. And you shouldn't have.

1175. If you did, I feel sorry for you.

  1176. I'm called,

  1177. as your pastor,

1178. to open the word of God

1179. and preach the word of God.

  1180. Because you know what,

1181. there's times in my life,

  1182. my opinions,

1183. the Bible has to correct them.

1184. When I start studying for a message,

  1185. there's things I'd like to,

1186. I mean, I'd like to tell Brother Jerry

  1187. what to do.

  1188. I say that because we're friends

1189. and I can say that.

  1190. But I don't,

1191. I just want you to understand,

  1192. I'm just,

  1193. be transparent.

  1194. I know it's Sunday morning.

1195. I don't sit in my office and think,

  1196. you know what,

1197. I'm going after so and so today.

  1198. Because you know what,

1199. when I open the word of God,

1200. the Holy Spirit speaks to me.

1201. And it's my job just to preach

1202. what the word of God says.

  1203. You think, preacher,

1204. why are we just walking through Luke

  1205. all the time?

  1206. You know what,

1207. because I'm going to preach

1208. what the word of God says.

1209. I'm not going to pick and choose.

1210. Sometimes there's going to be

  1211. a really fun message

1212. in these last two weeks.

1213. These haven't been the most fun messages.

  1214. Just to be honest.

  1215. But you know what,

  1216. we need it,

  1217. I need it.

  1218. And that's why we're going to

1219. walk through it like that.

  1220. That as your pastor,

1221. I just want to remind you

1222. and I want to promise you

1223. that I'm not here to preach

  1224. a hobby horse

  1225. or a personal agenda

  1226. or a cultural

  1227. or a political idea.

  1228. My goal,

  1229. my aim,

  1230. honestly,

  1231. my life's passion

  1232. is to preach

  1233. the word of God.

1234. That's what God has called me to do.

1235. And I just want us

  1236. to understand that

  1237. because Jesus is saying,

  1238. listen,

  1239. that was their job

  1240. and they said,

  1241. we don't like that.

  1242. It doesn't help us.

1243. And we're going to do

1244. what we want to do.

1245. But I also want to remind,

  1246. I think there's a warning here

  1247. for everybody.

1248. You don't have to be a preacher.

  1249. That we don't need

1250. to replace the word of God

1251. with books about the word of God.

  1252. Don't misunderstand that.

  1253. I read,

1254. I said to all my Sunday school class,

1255. all I do is read books

  1256. about the Bible.

  1257. But listen,

1258. we can get so enthralled

1259. about all the things out there.

  1260. Sometimes we study

1261. all about the word of God,

1262. but we don't actually study

  1263. the word of God.

1264. And I'm the same way as you.

  1265. I listen to podcasts,

  1266. I listen to sermons,

  1267. all these things,

  1268. but we cannot replace

  1269. the scripture

  1270. with a podcast

  1271. or a sermon.

  1272. Listen,

1273. you need to be involved

1274. in a local New Testament church

  1275. with other believers

1276. that are trying to do

  1277. the same thing

  1278. that is centered

1279. around the word of God.

  1280. Because anything

  1281. that makes salvation

  1282. seem earned

  1283. instead of received

  1284. is blocking the door.

1285. And I know this is

1286. a hard thing to understand

  1287. in our world.

1288. Not everything on the internet

  1289. is true.

1290. But everything in here is.

  1291. You can find helps.

  1292. I use commentaries.

1293. I read other great men.

1294. I listen to other sermons

  1295. and kind of see.

  1296. But ultimately,

1297. when it comes down to it,

1298. what does the word of God say?

  1299. Because my job

1300. is not to act like

  1301. I have the key

1302. and y'all got to come

  1303. get it from me.

  1304. No.

  1305. I'm just reminding us

1306. we all have the key.

1307. That we all have the scripture

1308. and we can all apply it

  1309. and use it.

1310. And anything that replaces grace

1311. with hoops to jump through

  1312. is hiding the key.

  1313. Standards and expectations

  1314. and practices

  1315. and things,

  1316. they have their place.

1317. but they should be pointing

1318. to the word of God.

1319. Why we do what we do

  1320. is based on what

1321. the word of God says.

  1322. He's reminding them,

  1323. listen,

1324. you are called to lead people

  1325. to Jesus,

  1326. not make it harder.

  1327. He said,

  1328. woe unto you.

1329. How dare you do that?

  1330. And when truth confronts

  1331. a hardened heart,

  1332. it produces a reaction.

  1333. That's what we see

  1334. in verse 53 and 54.

  1335. And as he said

  1336. these things unto them,

1337. the scribes and the Pharisees

1338. began to urge him vehemently

  1339. and provoke him

  1340. to speak many things.

  1341. They didn't want

  1342. to learn anything.

  1343. They said,

  1344. hey, keep talking.

1345. We need some more ammo

  1346. to come after you.

  1347. Why?

  1348. Because they were lying

  1349. in wait and seeking

  1350. to catch something

  1351. out of his mouth

1352. that they might accuse him.

  1353. See, their reaction

  1354. tells us everything

  1355. about their hearts.

  1356. But instead of listening,

  1357. they plotted.

  1358. Instead of repenting,

  1359. they just resisted

  1360. what God said.

  1361. Instead of humbling themselves,

  1362. they hardened their hearts.

  1363. And here's the truth

  1364. for us today.

  1365. That when God speaks

  1366. to our heart,

  1367. he convicts us.

  1368. That's a beautiful thing.

  1369. You should be thankful.

  1370. But conviction can either

  1371. lead us to repentance

1372. or drive us to rebellion.

1373. Sometimes the word of God

1374. meets us where we are

1375. and we don't like it.

  1376. They say,

  1377. well, I'm not doing

  1378. that right now.

  1379. Be careful

  1380. because that's exactly

  1381. what they did.

  1382. They hardened their hearts

1383. to the word of God.

  1384. Their response was tragic,

  1385. but it doesn't have

  1386. to be our response.

  1387. Maybe there's some things

  1388. in our life

1389. that we need to look at.

  1390. That when God speaks

  1391. to us today,

1392. we still have a choice.

  1393. We can defend ourselves

1394. or we can humble ourselves.

1395. Back to that opening illustration,

  1396. sometimes somebody

1397. starts to help us say,

1398. who do you think you are?

  1399. We laugh about that,

1400. but sometimes the word of God

  1401. speaks to our heart

  1402. and we think,

1403. who do you think you are?

1404. I'm just trying to live my life.

  1405. I'm a good person.

1406. You know why God speaks

  1407. to our heart?

1408. You know why he challenges us?

  1409. Because he loves us.

  1410. Jesus is not trying

  1411. to bury these guys.

1412. You know what he's trying to do?

1413. He's trying to show them

  1414. their heart.

  1415. He said,

  1416. come to me.

1417. You know what he's saying?

  1418. You're miserable

  1419. and you know it.

1420. Why don't you come to me?

  1421. I'm here for you.

  1422. I love you.

1423. I love you so much

1424. I'm telling you the truth.

  1425. I'm telling you something

1426. you don't want to hear.

1427. And yet they refused it.

  1428. The Pharisees were focused

  1429. on outward appearances.

  1430. The lawyers were focused

  1431. on control.

  1432. Both missed God.

1433. Don't be in that boat.

  1434. Jesus did not come

  1435. to burden people.

1436. He came to free them.

1437. John tells us in John 8,

1438. you shall know the truth

  1439. and the truth

  1440. shall make you free.

1441. Who is he talking about?

  1442. Himself.

  1443. He's the way.

  1444. He's the truth.

  1445. He's the life.

1446. As we kind of close it down

  1447. this morning,

  1448. I just want to

  1449. just kind of

1450. bring it to where we are.

  1451. I think sometimes

  1452. we can be here,

  1453. maybe somebody here today

  1454. is carrying a burden

  1455. Jesus never gave you

  1456. to carry.

  1457. You've kind of

1458. put it on your own self.

1459. Some of us have maybe

  1460. placed burdens on others

  1461. that God never intended.

1462. It's okay to have standards

  1463. and have convictions

  1464. and have priorities

  1465. in your life

  1466. and we all should.

  1467. We have to remember

  1468. that we're growing

1469. and God is the one

  1470. that does the growing.

  1471. God is the one

  1472. that does the work

  1473. and Jesus is offering

  1474. grace instead of pressure.

  1475. He's offering this relationship.

  1476. He's offering rest.

  1477. Come to him.

  1478. Maybe you're here

1479. and you spent your whole life

  1480. trying to earn

  1481. God's approval.

  1482. trying to be

  1483. just good enough

  1484. and trying to

  1485. clean yourself up

  1486. just a little bit.

  1487. Maybe you're carrying

  1488. some spiritual weight

  1489. you were never

  1490. meant to bear.

1491. I want to remind you

  1492. salvation is not found

1493. in a bunch of rules.

1494. It's found in Jesus Christ.

  1495. That's where it starts.

  1496. That's what God

  1497. wants us to know.

  1498. He carried,

  1499. listen,

  1500. He carried your sin

  1501. to the cross

  1502. and nailed it there.

  1503. He paid a debt

  1504. you couldn't pay.

  1505. He offers forgiveness

  1506. and new life today.

  1507. Sometimes,

  1508. maybe you're running around

  1509. and you've got all

  1510. these burdens on you.

1511. Give them to the Lord.

  1512. The Bible tells them,

  1513. Peter,

  1514. cast all your cares

  1515. on Him.

  1516. Why?

  1517. Because He cares

  1518. for you.

  1519. Maybe you've been told

  1520. and you've been taught

  1521. wrongly,

1522. you have to do this

1523. and you have to do this

1524. and you've got to do

  1525. all these things

1526. so you can make it

  1527. to heaven one day.

  1528. No,

1529. here's how you make it

  1530. to heaven.

1531. You call on the name

1532. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1533. You place your faith

  1534. and trust in Him.

  1535. You realize that

  1536. you're a sinner.

  1537. That all have sin

  1538. and come short

1539. of the glory of God

  1540. and the wages

  1541. of sin is death

  1542. but the gift

  1543. of God

  1544. is eternal life

  1545. through Jesus Christ

  1546. our Lord.

  1547. It's not about

  1548. keeping the Sabbath holy

  1549. and making sure

  1550. you're not carrying

  1551. too many dried figs

  1552. and all.

  1553. It's not what it's about.

1554. But maybe you're here today

  1555. and you love Jesus

  1556. and you know Him

  1557. as your Savior

1558. but you kind of drift

  1559. sometimes into that

  1560. heavy religion.

  1561. Listen,

  1562. Jesus came that you

  1563. might have peace

  1564. but maybe your life

1565. feels like a whole bunch

  1566. of pressure.

  1567. Maybe your Christian walk

1568. feels a lot more like

  1569. out of duty

  1570. instead of delight

  1571. in the Lord.

  1572. Maybe it's fear

  1573. instead of freedom.

1574. It's not what Jesus came.

  1575. You know what He's

  1576. doing today?

1577. Maybe He's calling you back.

  1578. Back to that

  1579. intimate relationship

  1580. about resting in Him.

  1581. Maybe you've added

1582. burdens to your own life.

  1583. Maybe you've placed

  1584. expectations on others

  1585. that God never placed

  1586. on them.

  1587. Lay Him down.

  1588. Get at Jesus' feet.

  1589. Let Him work

  1590. in your life.

  1591. As we leave today

  1592. I just want us

1593. to take this truth home.

  1594. This one truth.

  1595. Jesus never

  1596. adds burdens.

  1597. That wasn't His mission.

1598. It was to lift them.

  1599. Doesn't mean we live

  1600. our Christian life

  1601. like the Wild West.

  1602. We don't have time

1603. to go into all that.

  1604. But your life

  1605. in Christ

  1606. should not feel

  1607. miserable.

  1608. That's not

  1609. what Jesus came.

  1610. These men were miserable.

  1611. And they were making

  1612. other people miserable.

1613. Listen, the joy of the Lord

  1614. should be our strength.

  1615. In thy presence

  1616. is fullness

  1617. of joy.

  1618. Is that your life?

  1619. It should be.

  1620. Because that's what

  1621. Jesus offers.
