  1. Making our way through the gospel of Luke, Jesus and His mission.

  2. ! Jesus is on a mission, and His mission is to seek and to save that which was lost.

  3. And when He comes, He shows us how to live our life as well.

  4. That we're to be on mission for Him, that we're to share the gospel with others,

  5. and He's kind of showing us the way that we should live our own life.

  6. And so we're going to see that again here this morning.

  7. And we found our place there in Luke chapter number 12.

  8. We'll begin reading in verse number 13.

  9. The Bible says this,

  10. And one of the company said unto him,

  11. Master, speak to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me.

  12. And he said unto him,

  13. Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

  14. And he said unto them,

  15. Take heed and beware of covetousness.

  16. For a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesses.

  17. And he spake a parable unto them,

  18. The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully.

  19. And he thought within himself, saying,

  20. What shall I do?

  21. Because I have no room where to bestow my fruits.

  22. And he said,

  23. This will I do.

  24. I will pull down my barns and build greater.

  25. And there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

  26. And I will say to my soul,

  27. Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years.

  28. Take thine ease,

  29. Eat, drink,

  30. and be merry.

  31. But God said unto him,

  32. Thou fool,

  33. This night thy soul shall be required of thee.

  34. Then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?

  35. So is he that layeth up treasure for himself,

  36. And is not rich toward God.

  37. Maybe in your Bible it has a little heading,

  38. The rich fool.

  39. You think,

  40. Well, it doesn't apply to me because I'm not rich.

  41. It's much more than just possessions.

  42. It's the spirit that we see here.

  43. Because it is possible to have full barns and an empty soul.

  44. And that's what this man's problem was.

  45. He spent his whole life trying to live for himself

  46. And to get what the world said you have to have

  47. And missed the one thing that mattered.

  48. And Jesus wants us to make sure that we don't follow that same path.

  49. And so that's what we're going to look at this morning.

  50. Full barns, empty souls.

  51. So let's go to the Lord in prayer and ask his blessing on our time.

  52. Father, thank you for this time that we can't open up the word.

  53. Lord, I'm so thankful you've given us the word of God

  54. To help us live our life the way that you intend for it to be

  55. And to be designed to live.

  56. What I do pray is we've already prayed once

  57. That if there's somebody here today that's trying to be a good person,

  58. Trying to do the right thing,

  59. That maybe their faith and trust is in that,

  60. But you would make it clear that it needs to be in you

  61. And your work on the cross of Calvary.

  62. Lord, that we wouldn't live our life just accumulating a bunch of things

  63. And miss the one thing that matters.

  64. Lord, I pray you'd be with me now.

  65. You would empty me of self.

  66. You would cleanse me of sin.

  67. You'd fill me with your spirit.

  68. Lord, I need you.

  69. I need your words.

  70. I need your help.

  71. Lord, I pray that you would just

  72. Help this be a blessing to your people today.

  73. And we ask it in Christ's name.

  74. Amen.

  75. Thank you so much for standing.

  76. You may be seated.

  77. I heard a story about a man who died,

  78. And he was known as a compulsive hoarder.

  79. I'm not coming after you.

  80. Anybody like to collect things?

  81. I like the show American Pickers.

  82. Anybody ever watch that show American Pickers?

  83. Like I wish my grandpa had a barn.

  84. His barn is not full of cool stuff.

  85. It's full of a bunch of stuff we're going to have to throw away one day.

  86. You know, but I watch that show and they walk in there and they're like,

  87. Oh, it's a Model T that's never been driven.

  88. You know, like that's a cool way to hoard.

  89. But this gentleman in this particular story was not that way.

  90. When he passed away, he really didn't have much family.

  91. And so the workers went to his house and began cleaning it out.

  92. And they found newspapers from decades ago.

  93. And, you know, boxes are kind of piled to the ceiling.

  94. Broken appliances everywhere.

  95. His clothes that were in the closet that had never been worn.

  96. Really, room after room was filled with things that he had just collected and stored.

  97. But as the workers made their way through the house,

  98. they soon began to discover something kind of shocking.

  99. Hidden in the bottom of boxes and in certain areas and closets,

  100. there was envelopes full of cash.

  101. Full of savings bonds.

  102. And they started collecting all of them.

  103. They counted.

  104. And when they counted, it was over a million dollars of cash just scattered around this house.

  105. Now, I'm about that.

  106. That's what I would like to find.

  107. But that's not how he lived.

  108. When neighbors found out that they had found over a million dollars in the house,

  109. they said, we didn't see this one coming.

  110. He wore the same old worn out clothes every day.

  111. He refused to turn the heat on in the house because he didn't want to pay for it.

  112. He ate the cheapest food he could find.

  113. This man had wealth all around him but never enjoyed it.

  114. He had all the money.

  115. He had all the property that he lived on.

  116. All the possessions.

  117. And everything he spent his life storing up and saving and collecting went to somebody else.

  118. And I'm sure you've heard stories like this.

  119. And if you're like me, I think, man, what a waste.

  120. Man, if I had that money, we start thinking about,

  121. if I had this, then I would do this.

  122. And we think, how could somebody live like that?

  123. But as we come to our text here this morning in Luke's gospel,

  124. Jesus says something even more sobering than maybe a fictional story like that.

  125. He reminds us that it is possible to spend your entire life accumulating and saving

  126. and storing and collecting and end up when it's all said and done with nothing to show for it.

  127. In fact, something worse than that, to be spiritually bankrupt,

  128. to have a soul that is neglected.

  129. You can have full barns and an empty soul.

  130. So here in Luke chapter number 12, Jesus tells us a story about a man like the one in our story

  131. that had all these things and really he was doing very well on the outside.

  132. I mean, he had a booming business.

  133. The harvest was abundant in his case and really his future looks secure.

  134. But we read that verse there in verse number 20, when God spoke up, here's what he said,

  135. you're a fool.

  136. Wow.

  137. And the question that Jesus wants his listeners then,

  138. and I believe he wants us today to wrestle with is this,

  139. is how does somebody end up there?

  140. With a man that had all the goods of life

  141. and how does a person who appears successful and seems secure

  142. and really has more than enough end up to a place where at the end of his life,

  143. God says, thou fool.

  144. And really in this parable, Jesus walks us step by step down the road this man took

  145. so we don't travel the same road.

  146. Because here's the reality.

  147. You don't wake up one day and suddenly have an empty soul.

  148. No, no, no, it's a gradual process.

  149. It's little decisions.

  150. It's mixed up priorities.

  151. It's one misplaced treasure at a time.

  152. And an empty soul, it begins with a selfish heart.

  153. It grows into a covetous spirit.

  154. And what that does is it really shapes a self-centered life.

  155. And at the end, you're bankrupt.

  156. And that's where this man is.

  157. So if you're taking notes today, we could summarize it like this.

  158. The path to an empty soul.

  159. The path to an empty soul.

  160. And the first step down this road begins with something we see in the crowd

  161. before he even gets to the story.

  162. Number one, a selfish heart.

  163. Jesus is here and he's, and if you've been with us for the past few weeks,

  164. I mean he's teaching some really great eternal principles.

  165. He's really been leaning into not being a hypocrite.

  166. Because the Pharisees and the religious crowd,

  167. they would have been in that situation where they looked really good on the outside.

  168. I mean they look like this man in the story.

  169. Everything looks like they have it together.

  170. But in the inside, they were dead and they were just putting on a facade.

  171. And Jesus began to teach that to those that were following,

  172. listen, you don't need to fear man.

  173. You need to fear God.

  174. Because they were living in fear of keeping all of these rules

  175. and not running into the Pharisees.

  176. And really, Jesus says,

  177. you've got to make sure who your allegiance lies to.

  178. That it's either man or it's to God.

  179. And in the middle of all of this,

  180. when he's dealing with matters of eternal importance,

  181. a man interrupts the sermon.

  182. And he's like,

  183. hey Jesus,

  184. make my brother give me my inheritance.

  185. You think,

  186. what is the deal here?

  187. I mean you talk about a selfish request.

  188. This man kind of seems way off.

  189. He's not saying,

  190. Lord,

  191. teach us something spiritual.

  192. He's like,

  193. Lord,

  194. give me my money.

  195. I mean that's what's going on right here.

  196. Kind of in the middle of Jesus' sermon.

  197. Because if your Bible's like mine,

  198. there's a bunch of red letters.

  199. And then there's this guy asking a really dumb question.

  200. And just write this down.

  201. There is such things as a dumb question.

  202. You know,

  203. there is.

  204. This is one of them.

  205. But I'm glad he asked,

  206. because Jesus is going to use this opportunity

  207. to teach us a great principle.

  208. Because we notice this man's tone

  209. when he says,

  210. Master,

  211. speak to my brother

  212. that he divide the inheritance with me.

  213. He doesn't ask Jesus to evaluate the situation.

  214. He doesn't ask Jesus for wisdom.

  215. No,

  216. I think you see there,

  217. he demands it.

  218. You know,

  219. that's kind of how my kids do sometimes.

  220. Tell them to be nice.

  221. Tell them this is not theirs.

  222. Anybody else's kids like that?

  223. Just mine?

  224. Okay,

  225. I thought so.

  226. You know,

  227. we do it the same way.

  228. You go to your boss,

  229. tell them that this is mine,

  230. you know.

  231. We still have that.

  232. But here's really what he's saying

  233. in verse number 13.

  234. Jesus,

  235. take my side.

  236. That's what he's wanting.

  237. He's wanting somebody

  238. with a little bit of clout.

  239. Somebody that has

  240. some authority

  241. to tell his brother

  242. he's wrong.

  243. That I want what I want.

  244. And really,

  245. he's so consumed

  246. with what he believes

  247. belongs to him

  248. that he interrupts Jesus

  249. when he's teaching

  250. about the importance

  251. of these eternal matters.

  252. And while speaking about the soul,

  253. this man's worried about his estate

  254. that he feels like

  255. he's getting gypped on.

  256. And that's kind of where he's at.

  257. And I love Jesus' response.

  258. He doesn't say,

  259. hey man,

  260. he didn't say,

  261. you're a great guy.

  262. He said,

  263. who do you think you are?

  264. And that's verse 14.

  265. When he said,

  266. man.

  267. This wasn't a kind tone.

  268. This wasn't a normal greeting.

  269. He was kind of putting

  270. this man in his place.

  271. He's saying,

  272. man,

  273. who made me a judge?

  274. This is not what I'm here for.

  275. This is not my mission

  276. is what Jesus says.

  277. He's telling this guy,

  278. listen,

  279. I didn't come here

  280. to be a probate judge.

  281. He's like,

  282. this isn't on my docket.

  283. I'm not here to settle

  284. family estates.

  285. Now as we walk through

  286. the Gospel of Luke,

  287. we realize this.

  288. Jesus came to deal

  289. with something far more important.

  290. Our heart.

  291. That's what he's searching for.

  292. That's what he's desiring.

  293. That's what he wants

  294. from all of us.

  295. And the problem

  296. with this man's heart,

  297. it was in the wrong place.

  298. Now don't misunderstand,

  299. and we'll kind of walk

  300. through it here in a minute,

  301. but the real issue

  302. is not the inheritance.

  303. Like, you know,

  304. if you want to put me

  305. in your inheritance,

  306. go ahead.

  307. I'm cool with that.

  308. I mean, yeah,

  309. just write me in there.

  310. Listen,

  311. there's nothing wrong

  312. with an inheritance.

  313. Some of you have received some.

  314. But here's the problem

  315. with this man,

  316. his obsession with it.

  317. He wants it.

  318. He wants it now.

  319. He's got,

  320. he needs more of it

  321. because he needs

  322. all the things

  323. because no doubt,

  324. maybe he's already

  325. bought the things

  326. that he's going to buy

  327. with an inheritance

  328. and now the collectors

  329. come and do for it.

  330. That's maybe where he's at.

  331. He's like,

  332. hey, I need this money

  333. kind of like right now

  334. because I put the jet ski

  335. on layaway.

  336. I don't know if they had

  337. jet skis back then,

  338. but probably so.

  339. See, money and possessions

  340. really have a way

  341. of revealing

  342. what we truly value.

  343. I mean,

  344. they expose our heart.

  345. They really expose

  346. our priorities,

  347. our desires.

  348. They expose our idols.

  349. We don't like to think

  350. about it like that,

  351. but they do.

  352. Money is a way

  353. of bringing out

  354. the worst in people.

  355. And this situation

  356. wasn't unique

  357. to the first century Israel.

  358. I think we see it

  359. in everyday life.

  360. You probably have seen it

  361. around you

  362. that families

  363. that have gotten along

  364. for years

  365. suddenly fracture

  366. when an inheritance

  367. is involved.

  368. And it becomes

  369. this messy situation

  370. and siblings

  371. stop speaking

  372. to each other

  373. and arguments erupt

  374. over houses

  375. and land

  376. and furniture

  377. and money

  378. and Jesus is saying,

  379. listen,

  380. this is not an illegal dispute.

  381. It's a spiritual problem.

  382. It's about where

  383. our heart is

  384. because where our

  385. treasure is

  386. is where our heart

  387. is also.

  388. Jesus told us

  389. that in the Sermon

  390. on the Mount.

  391. He's going to tell us

  392. in a few sermons later

  393. as we move

  394. through the Gospel of Luke

  395. the same truth.

  396. And before we move on

  397. and kind of get into

  398. the actual parable

  399. that Jesus gives,

  400. I think it's worth

  401. stopping and asking

  402. ourselves an honest question.

  403. What does money

  404. tend to surface

  405. in our own life?

  406. when it comes up

  407. and there's a situation

  408. about what we feel

  409. like we deserve

  410. and what we need.

  411. It might not look like

  412. interrupting Jesus

  413. in the middle of a sermon

  414. but it might look like

  415. a constant preoccupation

  416. with financial gain.

  417. Listen,

  418. God doesn't want you

  419. to go to work

  420. and be the worst employee ever.

  421. It's not,

  422. it's not,

  423. Jesus is not saying,

  424. well,

  425. don't go for a raise,

  426. go for a demotion.

  427. It's not what it's saying.

  428. But what's your focus?

  429. Is your focus just

  430. more and more and more?

  431. How many of you

  432. have ever gotten a raise

  433. in your life?

  434. Only two people?

  435. Wow.

  436. Y'all are the worst

  437. workers ever,

  438. I guess.

  439. Hypothetically,

  440. you got a raise.

  441. Let's say you got a raise

  442. last year and your boss

  443. says, hey,

  444. I want to give you a raise.

  445. No,

  446. I'm good.

  447. I don't think anybody

  448. in this room,

  449. gas prices,

  450. you're going to need one soon.

  451. I'm like,

  452. what in the world?

  453. There's nothing wrong

  454. with those things.

  455. But is that your

  456. constant preoccupation?

  457. Is that what drives you?

  458. Maybe there's anxiety

  459. in your life

  460. that every time,

  461. it rises every time

  462. that money gets tight.

  463. And listen,

  464. I understand that.

  465. We've all been in

  466. situations like that.

  467. Maybe it's frustration

  468. when somebody else

  469. seems to get

  470. what you think

  471. you deserve.

  472. And that should have

  473. been your promotion.

  474. That should have been

  475. your raise.

  476. That should have been

  477. your job.

  478. And maybe it's this

  479. quiet resentment

  480. when it just feels

  481. like life isn't fair

  482. and you're trying

  483. to do the right thing

  484. and you're trying

  485. to serve the Lord

  486. and you're trying

  487. to give

  488. and you're trying

  489. to go

  490. and it just seems

  491. like nothing's

  492. working out for you.

  493. And sometimes

  494. the most revealing

  495. thing about our hearts

  496. when it comes

  497. to the things

  498. of money

  499. is not what we say

  500. in church

  501. and nod to a sermon

  502. but what occupies

  503. our thoughts

  504. throughout the week.

  505. And Jesus wants

  506. to address that.

  507. Because this request

  508. right here,

  509. it exposed

  510. what mattered

  511. most to this man.

  512. It's like

  513. he's sitting there

  514. in this sermon

  515. and Jesus is teaching

  516. all this life-changing

  517. truth and he's thinking

  518. I'm going to wait

  519. until he pauses

  520. and I'm going to

  521. ask my question.

  522. I mean that's kind

  523. of how it is.

  524. I mean as soon as you,

  525. Jesus, I mean he was

  526. ready to go.

  527. And it just showed

  528. where his heart was.

  529. And Jesus responds

  530. to him we saw

  531. in verse 14

  532. but he didn't say

  533. okay I'll settle

  534. the argument.

  535. No he does something

  536. far more important.

  537. He exposes

  538. the heart behind

  539. the request.

  540. Because the real danger

  541. wasn't with the

  542. inheritance dispute.

  543. It was with the

  544. covetous spirit

  545. that was driving it.

  546. That's where

  547. the problem lies

  548. and that's why

  549. Jesus gives us

  550. a warning here

  551. in verse number 15

  552. that applies

  553. to every one of us.

  554. He says listen

  555. the path to an

  556. empty soul

  557. it starts with

  558. a selfish heart

  559. but it ends up

  560. turning into

  561. a covetous spirit.

  562. Look at the very

  563. first part of

  564. number 15.

  565. Verse 15.

  566. And he said

  567. unto them

  568. this is everybody

  569. listening so

  570. this man addresses

  571. Jesus but Jesus

  572. addresses the crowd.

  573. Take heed

  574. and beware

  575. of covetousness.

  576. So Jesus

  577. really is exposing

  578. the deeper problem.

  579. You know I feel

  580. like Jesus would

  581. have been very

  582. stern in this

  583. situation.

  584. Anybody's dad

  585. ever used their

  586. their dad voice

  587. on you?

  588. You know my dad

  589. yeah yeah

  590. yeah that's what

  591. I'm talking about.

  592. I mean he knows

  593. what's up.

  594. And I know

  595. you know my dad

  596. was a pretty easy

  597. going guy but

  598. when the dad

  599. voice came out

  600. you better

  601. check yourself

  602. before you wreck

  603. yourself is kind

  604. of what what

  605. happened.

  606. You know it's

  607. because hey we're

  608. not gonna do

  609. that oh my

  610. goodness.

  611. We when dad

  612. used a certain

  613. voice we knew

  614. he was serious

  615. and that's exactly

  616. what Jesus is

  617. doing here.

  618. I just want to

  619. remind us that

  620. Jesus is not

  621. sometimes who we

  622. think he is based

  623. on some paintings

  624. we've seen from

  625. the renaissance.

  626. Jesus didn't

  627. mess around

  628. here.

  629. He's not

  630. saying well

  631. let's all be

  632. kind and get

  633. along.

  634. No here's what

  635. he says take

  636. heed beware.

  637. He's showing

  638. the seriousness

  639. of the issue

  640. of the heart

  641. problem.

  642. That word take

  643. heed means this

  644. hey pay

  645. attention.

  646. Don't miss

  647. this.

  648. He because

  649. apparently this

  650. man has missed

  651. everything else.

  652. He said listen

  653. I need you to

  654. pay attention

  655. right here.

  656. I need you to

  657. take heed.

  658. I need you to

  659. beware.

  660. Here's what he's

  661. saying.

  662. You got to

  663. guard your

  664. heart.

  665. Because this

  666. man wasn't

  667. guarding his

  668. heart.

  669. He had let

  670. all these

  671. things in and

  672. this selfishness

  673. is really coming

  674. to the surface.

  675. And these are

  676. strong words.

  677. Jesus isn't

  678. casually offering

  679. some financial

  680. advice.

  681. He's issuing a

  682. warning.

  683. We ask ourselves

  684. why such a

  685. serious warning?

  686. I mean it's

  687. just a request

  688. that a lot of

  689. people in the

  690. crowd probably

  691. had.

  692. I think the

  693. warning is so

  694. serious because

  695. covetousness is a

  696. serious sin.

  697. Jesus looks at it

  698. that way.

  699. So what is

  700. covetousness?

  701. It's not a word

  702. we go around

  703. using all the

  704. time but the

  705. idea is it

  706. refers to this

  707. boundless desire

  708. to have more.

  709. More money.

  710. More possessions.

  711. More success.

  712. More security.

  713. It's a spirit in

  714. our life that

  715. constantly whispers

  716. if I just had a

  717. little bit more

  718. then I'd be happy.

  719. If I just got that

  720. raise, if I just

  721. did this, if I just

  722. got rid of that,

  723. then I would be

  724. happy.

  725. But that's not how

  726. it works.

  727. Because we all in

  728. this room have

  729. gotten that raise

  730. and gotten that

  731. promotion and

  732. bought that car and

  733. did all those

  734. things and guess

  735. what?

  736. You're thinking,

  737. well, I guess I

  738. just need that then.

  739. I guess I just

  740. need that next

  741. thing.

  742. I just need that

  743. other thing and

  744. it's that constant

  745. reminder that it

  746. will never satisfy

  747. us.

  748. I mean, you try to

  749. take care of your

  750. new things.

  751. You get a new car

  752. and nobody's allowed

  753. to eat in it.

  754. And I mention this

  755. all the time, I bet

  756. your car smells like

  757. french fries right

  758. now.

  759. You know, because

  760. it's like, well,

  761. I'll get a new one

  762. sooner or later.

  763. Listen, the Bible

  764. calls us to deal

  765. with the spirit of

  766. covetousness

  767. drastically.

  768. Here's what Paul

  769. tells the Colossians

  770. in Colossians 3, 5.

  771. Mortify, which

  772. means kill it.

  773. Mortify, therefore,

  774. your members which

  775. are upon the earth,

  776. fornication, uncleanness,

  777. inordinate affection,

  778. evil concubinance,

  779. and covetousness.

  780. See, we wouldn't

  781. maybe put covetousness

  782. in a category with

  783. some of these other

  784. sins, but the word

  785. of God does.

  786. And he says,

  787. here's the problem,

  788. all of these things,

  789. which is idolatry?

  790. That it replaces God

  791. in our life.

  792. And the reason

  793. covetousness is dangerous

  794. is because it

  795. convinces us that

  796. life can be secured

  797. without God.

  798. And that we can find

  799. satisfaction apart

  800. from Jesus.

  801. That's impossible.

  802. There is no

  803. satisfaction in life

  804. outside of Christ.

  805. That job may satisfy

  806. for a while,

  807. but it can be gone

  808. like that.

  809. Your health might be

  810. good right now,

  811. but it can be gone

  812. like that.

  813. Listen, we've got to be

  814. careful where we're

  815. placing our trust

  816. and we're looking

  817. for satisfaction

  818. because other than

  819. Christ, it will all

  820. fail.

  821. And Jesus reminds us

  822. of that.

  823. And really, the Bible

  824. warns us of this

  825. danger over and over

  826. and over.

  827. Solomon, the wisest

  828. man who ever lived,

  829. did some dumb things

  830. and he learned from it.

  831. And he wrote the

  832. book of Ecclesiastes.

  833. And he said in

  834. Ecclesiastes 5.10,

  835. He that loveth silver

  836. shall not be satisfied

  837. with silver,

  838. nor he that loveth

  839. abundance with

  840. increase.

  841. This is also vanity.

  842. He said it's empty.

  843. And we're talking

  844. about a man that

  845. had more money

  846. than he knew

  847. what to do with.

  848. He had so much money,

  849. he just started

  850. overlaying everything

  851. with gold.

  852. He said it doesn't

  853. satisfy.

  854. He kept looking

  855. and he kept searching.

  856. Paul told Timothy,

  857. for the love of money

  858. is the root of all evil.

  859. Listen, money in and

  860. of itself is not evil.

  861. It's not.

  862. We can use it for good

  863. and we can use it

  864. for evil.

  865. Here's the problem

  866. with money,

  867. when you love it.

  868. When it's your desire.

  869. When it's your force

  870. behind it.

  871. When the Bible tells us

  872. in 1 Timothy 6,

  873. which while some

  874. coveted after,

  875. they have erred

  876. from the faith

  877. and pierced themselves

  878. through with many sorrows.

  879. See, money promises

  880. satisfaction,

  881. but it never delivers.

  882. Book of Proverbs says

  883. it gets wings

  884. and flies away.

  885. Anybody's bank

  886. can't work like that?

  887. You know,

  888. I just tried this new thing.

  889. Don't look at the bank

  890. and you won't be disappointed.

  891. You know,

  892. that doesn't work either,

  893. by the way.

  894. Joking.

  895. So Jesus says,

  896. hey,

  897. take heed,

  898. pay attention,

  899. beware.

  900. I want you to see this.

  901. Why?

  902. Because he tells us

  903. in the end of verse 15,

  904. for a man's life

  905. consisteth not

  906. in the abundance

  907. of the things

  908. which he possesses.

  909. You can have

  910. all the toys

  911. in the world

  912. and have an empty soul.

  913. I mean,

  914. your house can be

  915. full of possessions

  916. with nothing to show.

  917. I mean,

  918. we see it in our world

  919. all the time.

  920. We see celebrities

  921. that have all these things

  922. and they end up

  923. wrecking their life,

  924. they end up taking

  925. their life,

  926. and you think,

  927. man,

  928. if I had all those things,

  929. I'd be happy.

  930. No,

  931. you wouldn't.

  932. No,

  933. you wouldn't.

  934. Because those things

  935. don't satisfy.

  936. The things in your life

  937. don't satisfy.

  938. The only place

  939. that true life is found,

  940. satisfaction and joy

  941. that cannot be touched,

  942. is in a relationship

  943. with Jesus Christ.

  944. That's where joy is found.

  945. Read John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  946. When we abide in him,

  947. we will experience joy.

  948. And we just can't assume

  949. that we're immune to this.

  950. Listen,

  951. covetousness,

  952. it slips in quietly

  953. to everyday life.

  954. You say,

  955. what does it look like?

  956. Well,

  957. it can look like

  958. constant comparison.

  959. We think we're fine.

  960. But every time

  961. a really nice car drives by,

  962. I'm like,

  963. ooh,

  964. don't act like

  965. you don't do that.

  966. I mean,

  967. I was driving down,

  968. we were kind of

  969. in Fort Worth,

  970. I guess they were having

  971. some sort of car show,

  972. and they had,

  973. at the racetrack,

  974. they had all kinds

  975. of hot rods.

  976. I was like,

  977. Lord,

  978. if you really loved me,

  979. I would take a 57 Chevy.

  980. I mean,

  981. I would.

  982. For you,

  983. of course,

  984. I'd put a Central Baptist

  985. sticker on it.

  986. Follow me to Central Baptist,

  987. you know.

  988. But I look at people

  989. and I'm like,

  990. why do they have that?

  991. Like,

  992. I wish I had that.

  993. And I kind of

  994. begin to compare my life,

  995. and maybe we measure

  996. success sometimes

  997. by what we have.

  998. We live in a culture

  999. that the world

  1000. looks and says,

  1001. well,

  1002. they're successful

1003. because look at their house,

  1004. look at their car,

  1005. look at this,

  1006. look at that.

1007. I think we all know

  1008. this in the room.

1009. We still fall prey to it,

  1010. but we know,

  1011. that doesn't mean

  1012. you're successful.

1013. It's going to shock us

1014. when we get to heaven

  1015. one day,

  1016. and the people

  1017. the Lord

1018. gives all the crowns to,

  1019. there's going to be

  1020. somebody you've probably

  1021. never even heard of.

1022. Some little old widow lady

1023. that nobody even knew about,

1024. but she may have been

  1025. the most faithful prayer

  1026. that anybody's ever known.

  1027. It's not based

  1028. on worldly success,

  1029. and maybe we think

1030. that we look at this

1031. and it creeps into our life,

  1032. this covetous spirit,

  1033. because we think

  1034. one more purchase

  1035. will satisfy.

  1036. Maybe you're saving up.

  1037. I'm not here to,

  1038. listen,

  1039. God's not against things,

1040. but he is against things

  1041. having you.

  1042. And maybe the thing

1043. that you're trying to get

  1044. and you're pushing towards

  1045. and you're working overtime

  1046. is not really

1047. what he wants you to have.

  1048. It's not really

1049. what he's calling you to do.

1050. And maybe it creeps in our life

  1051. by believing life

1052. will feel a little bit more secure

1053. when we reach that financial goal.

1054. You should have financial goals.

  1055. The Bible tells us

1056. the ants prepare for winter.

  1057. There's a good in that,

  1058. but that's not what

  1059. your life is about.

  1060. That's what this man's life

  1061. was about.

1062. That's what Jesus is showing.

  1063. And to make sure

1064. that no one misses this warning,

  1065. he tells a parable,

1066. a story that they would have understood

1067. to kind of bring it to life.

1068. And this parable is about a man

  1069. who had everything

1070. the world said he needed.

1071. I mean, he had the house,

  1072. he had the cars,

1073. he had the jet ski,

1074. he had all the stuff.

  1075. But in the end,

  1076. he lost what mattered.

1077. And so we see a path

  1078. to an empty soul.

1079. It starts with this selfish heart

  1080. and a covetous spirit,

  1081. and it creates

  1082. a self-centered life.

  1083. A self-centered life.

  1084. See, what started

  1085. as something

1086. that kind of was just

  1087. under the surface,

  1088. now is shaping

  1089. how this man lives.

1090. Look in verse number 16.

1091. And he spake a parable

  1092. unto them, saying,

1093. the ground of a certain rich man

  1094. brought forth plentifully.

1095. And he thought within himself,

  1096. saying,

  1097. what shall I do?

1098. Because I have no room

1099. where to bestow my fruits.

1100. Now what we know about this man

1101. from these first few verses

  1102. is this,

  1103. he was prosperous.

1104. He had an abundant harvest.

  1105. And from the outside,

  1106. he looked like

  1107. an absolute success story.

1108. The world would look around

  1109. and say,

  1110. man, I don't know what

1111. he's putting on his field,

  1112. but it's growing.

1113. I mean, he's got the best food

  1114. at the market,

1115. and we want to be involved

  1116. with him.

1117. We want to invest here,

  1118. and his investments

  1119. are paying off,

1120. and he's got all the things

  1121. that he wants.

1122. But I think when we read

  1123. through these verses,

1124. and we won't take down

1125. to read the rest of them,

  1126. Jesus is inviting us

  1127. to see something.

  1128. This conversation

  1129. is happening

  1130. within his own head.

  1131. He's talking to himself.

  1132. He's preaching a sermon

  1133. to himself.

1134. Yeah, he had a lot

  1135. going for him,

1136. but what he doesn't have

1137. is that he doesn't ask God

  1138. what he should do.

  1139. God's the one blessing.

  1140. Hey, the rain,

1141. it rains on the just

  1142. and the unjust.

  1143. He might have been

  1144. a good farmer,

1145. but you know what he still

  1146. needed?

  1147. Rain.

  1148. He still needed

  1149. the right temperatures.

  1150. He still needed

  1151. the right season.

  1152. He still needed

  1153. a lot of things

  1154. to work for him,

1155. but he doesn't ask God

  1156. what he should do.

  1157. He doesn't thank God

  1158. for his harvest.

  1159. He doesn't consider

  1160. helping others.

  1161. I mean,

  1162. he has an overabundance.

1163. He can't even store it all.

  1164. Instead of saying,

1165. hey, how can I help

  1166. my neighbor around him?

1167. You know what I need?

  1168. Bigger barns.

1169. Really, the idea is this.

  1170. His only concern

  1171. is what to do

  1172. with his own abundance.

  1173. My fruit,

  1174. my barns,

  1175. my goods.

1176. And in these few verses

  1177. right here,

  1178. 11 times the word

1179. I or my is mentioned.

  1180. That's what it's about.

  1181. God is never mentioned

  1182. in his conversation.

  1183. Eternity is never considered.

  1184. Other people are

1185. way out of the question.

  1186. And so he's preaching

  1187. the sermon to himself

1188. and he has an epiphany,

  1189. a little light bulb

1190. over his head in verse 18.

  1191. This will I do.

1192. I'll just build bigger barns.

  1193. You know,

1194. these barns are old anyways.

1195. I'll just get newer ones.

1196. And we look at it and say,

  1197. well, that's just

  1198. good business, preacher.

  1199. I mean,

  1200. he's just doing

  1201. the right thing.

  1202. I mean,

  1203. it's good business planning.

  1204. He's bigger barns

  1205. and increase of storage.

  1206. And really,

  1207. he's just preparing

  1208. for the future.

  1209. What's wrong with that?

  1210. Well, here's what's wrong.

1211. It's not about the barns.

  1212. It's about the heart.

  1213. That's what Jesus

  1214. is showing us

  1215. in this story.

  1216. See,

  1217. this man saw

  1218. his prosperity

  1219. as something

  1220. to possess,

  1221. not something

  1222. to steward.

  1223. Listen,

  1224. we're just stewards.

  1225. Everything we have,

  1226. I'm pretty sure

  1227. James told us

  1228. every good gift

  1229. and every perfect gift

  1230. is from above.

  1231. It comes from God.

  1232. And we begin

  1233. to think to ourselves

  1234. if we're not careful

  1235. like this,

  1236. man,

  1237. hey,

1238. I worked hard for this.

  1239. This is my stuff.

  1240. No,

  1241. we're just the steward

  1242. of all the blessings

  1243. God has given us

  1244. in our life.

1245. And he viewed it as,

  1246. no,

  1247. they're mine.

  1248. He never considered

  1249. the harvest

1250. was a gift from God.

  1251. He never considered

  1252. the abundance

  1253. might come

  1254. with responsibility.

  1255. No,

  1256. instead,

1257. we see in verse 19,

  1258. he assumed

  1259. that the blessings

  1260. of his life

  1261. existed purely

  1262. for his own comfort.

  1263. Eat,

  1264. drink,

  1265. and be merry

  1266. because that's what

  1267. life is all about.

  1268. That's what he thought.

1269. And I would just tell you

  1270. to look around

  1271. outside this,

  1272. in this world,

  1273. that's what people

  1274. still think life's about.

  1275. And the reason

1276. this is such a serious

  1277. warning is because

  1278. it very easily

1279. creeps into our own life.

1280. We say things like this,

  1281. well,

  1282. I deserve this.

  1283. Listen,

  1284. I'm not,

  1285. I'm not trying

  1286. to be mean.

1287. I like going on trips.

1288. I like eating good food.

  1289. I like stuff.

  1290. God's not against that.

1291. But he wants our heart.

1292. And maybe some of the blessings

  1293. that we have,

1294. God gave them to you

  1295. and they weren't supposed

  1296. to stop there.

  1297. They were supposed

  1298. to go there

1299. and go to somebody else.

1300. That God wants to use you.

  1301. And here's this man's

  1302. fatal assumption.

  1303. He believed

  1304. he controlled tomorrow.

  1305. That's what he thought.

  1306. James tells us that

1307. at the end of James chapter 4.

    James 4 chapter mention

  1308. He said,

  1309. what?

  1310. You're here now

  1311. and you're gone.

  1312. Your life's just a vapor.

  1313. Like,

  1314. we just assume

1315. we're going to be here tomorrow.

1316. I know this is not fun

  1317. to think about,

1318. but we're not promised tomorrow.

  1319. We don't control tomorrow.

  1320. I mean,

  1321. this man assumed

  1322. he had many years

  1323. ahead of him.

  1324. He believed his wealth

  1325. had completely secured

  1326. his future,

  1327. so he was done.

  1328. He was retiring.

1329. This is not against retirement,

  1330. but it's against

  1331. living for yourself.

  1332. Listen,

  1333. you can retire

1334. and still be a blessing

  1335. and a useful person

1336. in the kingdom of God.

  1337. Sometimes people retire

1338. and they just kind of

  1339. go off the rocker.

  1340. No, no,

  1341. we're supposed to still

  1342. serve the Lord.

  1343. All those blessings,

1344. the fact you can't retire

  1345. is because God

  1346. allowed that to happen.

  1347. But he forgot

  1348. that one truth

1349. that we must all remember,

  1350. that life is fragile.

  1351. See,

  1352. a selfish heart

  1353. and a covetous spirit

  1354. and a self-centered life,

1355. it will always land you

  1356. in spiritual bankruptcy.

  1357. Verse number 20,

1358. But God said unto him,

  1359. Thou fool,

1360. this night shall thy soul

  1361. be required of thee.

1362. Then who shall those things be

  1363. which thou hast provided?

  1364. See,

  1365. up to this point

  1366. in the parable,

1367. the only voice we've heard

  1368. is the rich man

  1369. talking to himself,

1370. patting himself on the back,

  1371. encouraging himself.

  1372. But now God speaks.

1373. And everybody around this man

  1374. said,

  1375. Wow,

  1376. you're the best businessman

  1377. I know.

  1378. I mean,

  1379. teach me your secrets,

  1380. write a book

  1381. on how to be

  1382. a successful farmer.

  1383. Ten steps to

  1384. being a successful farmer.

  1385. But when God evaluates

  1386. this man's life,

  1387. the verdict is shocking.

  1388. He said,

  1389. Thou fool.

1390. I want to remind us

  1391. what scripture describes

  1392. as a fool.

1393. A fool is not somebody,

  1394. we may say fool

  1395. like they lack intelligence.

  1396. That's not what a fool is

  1397. in the Bible.

  1398. It's not somebody

  1399. that lacks intelligence.

  1400. A fool is somebody

  1401. who lives

1402. as if God doesn't matter

  1403. or he doesn't exist.

  1404. Psalm 14,

  1405. The fool hath said

  1406. in his heart,

  1407. There is no God.

  1408. That's what a fool is.

1409. This man may have not

  1410. verbally denied God,

  1411. but he lived

  1412. as if God

  1413. had nothing

1414. to do with his life.

  1415. He planned his future

  1416. without God.

  1417. He measured his success

  1418. without God.

1419. He built all the security

  1420. that he had

  1421. without God.

  1422. And he was planning

  1423. and building

  1424. and drawing

  1425. up the blueprints

1426. for all these bigger barns

  1427. because he thought

1428. he had all these years

  1429. and God said,

  1430. You got one night.

  1431. And that's it.

  1432. In a single moment,

  1433. all the plans collapsed.

  1434. All the barns

  1435. meant nothing.

  1436. All the stored grain

  1437. meant nothing.

  1438. All the financial security

  1439. meant nothing.

  1440. Because while he gathered

  1441. and he stored

  1442. and he accumulated

  1443. all these things

  1444. throughout his life,

1445. he neglected the only thing

  1446. that mattered,

  1447. his soul.

  1448. And Jesus gives us

  1449. the final warning there

  1450. in verse 21.

  1451. He says,

1452. So is he that layeth up

  1453. treasure for himself

  1454. and is not rich

  1455. toward God.

  1456. Notice Jesus

  1457. doesn't condemn wealth.

  1458. Nowhere in this parable.

1459. Even in the final warning.

  1460. The sin wasn't

  1461. that this man

  1462. was rich.

  1463. The sin was

  1464. that he was rich

  1465. towards himself

  1466. and poor towards God.

  1467. That's the sin.

  1468. That he thought,

  1469. you know,

  1470. as long as I'm

  1471. a good person,

  1472. as long as I'm

  1473. doing good things,

  1474. then hey,

  1475. God's going to

  1476. just let me in.

1477. But if you go back

1478. to the Sermon on the Mount,

  1479. the very first thing

  1480. Jesus says is,

  1481. Blessed are the poor

  1482. in spirit.

  1483. You know what that,

1484. you know what he's saying?

  1485. Blessed are those

  1486. that realize

  1487. they're spiritually bankrupt.

  1488. Because when you realize

  1489. you're spiritually bankrupt,

  1490. here's what you do.

1491. You cry out to God.

  1492. That's what changes

  1493. your life.

  1494. That's where

  1495. true wealth is found.

  1496. Blessed are the poor

  1497. in spirit,

  1498. for theirs

1499. is the kingdom of heaven.

  1500. See,

  1501. this man had it

  1502. all backwards.

1503. As long as I get everything,

1504. God's got to let me in.

  1505. He's got to,

  1506. you know,

1507. he wouldn't turn me away.

  1508. I'm successful.

1509. I do all the right things

  1510. in the world's standards.

  1511. Listen,

  1512. he had invested

  1513. everything in the earth

  1514. and nothing in eternity.

1515. And that is a dangerous

  1516. place to be.

  1517. See,

  1518. here's the big idea.

  1519. The success

1520. in the eyes of the world

  1521. doesn't guarantee

1522. success in the eyes of God.

  1523. this man that interrupted

  1524. was so worried

  1525. about all his possessions,

  1526. all his inheritance.

  1527. He needed it.

  1528. Jesus,

1529. tell him to give me

  1530. what's mine.

  1531. But you can have

  1532. full barns

1533. or a full bank account,

  1534. a full retirement plan,

1535. and still stand before God

  1536. with an empty soul.

  1537. And the tragedy

  1538. was that was true

  1539. in this man's life.

  1540. That his soul

  1541. was empty.

  1542. And Jesus said,

  1543. I came to seek

  1544. and to save

  1545. that which was lost.

  1546. But when you place

1547. your trust in the wrong things,

  1548. you don't think you're lost

  1549. because,

1550. I have this and this.

1551. And if I have good things,

1552. then God has to love me.

  1553. Listen,

  1554. God's love isn't based

  1555. on your material blessings.

1556. Just because you have things

1557. doesn't mean God loves you.

  1558. That's a biblical principle.

1559. And the reason he found himself there

1560. is because he let that selfish heart

1561. morph into a covetous spirit.

1562. And it shaped the way

  1563. he lived his life.

1564. His life wasn't about other people.

  1565. It was about himself.

1566. That's not how Jesus lived.

1567. Jesus came not to be ministered unto,

  1568. but to minister,

  1569. to serve,

1570. and to give his life

  1571. a ransom for many.

1572. And if we're going to live on mission

  1573. like Jesus did,

1574. you know what we should do?

  1575. Minister.

  1576. Serve.

1577. Maybe God's blessed you financially.

1578. God's blessed you in other areas.

1579. You know what he wants you to do?

  1580. Share it.

  1581. Help others.

  1582. Point others to Christ.

  1583. And Jesus tells us

  1584. this story right here

1585. so none of us end up

  1586. where this man was.

1587. So as you go into this week,

1588. I want you to remember

  1589. this simple truth.

  1590. The question is not

1591. how full your barns are.

  1592. The question is,

1593. are you rich towards God

  1594. or rich towards yourself?

  1595. What's your trust in?

  1596. Where's your security?

1597. Is it in all the abundance

  1598. of things you have?

  1599. Well, guess what?

1600. You can't take those with you.

  1601. We've all heard a little saying,

  1602. you've never seen a hearse

  1603. pulling a U-Haul.

  1604. You don't take it.

  1605. All the Egyptian pharaohs,

  1606. they thought,

1607. I'm going to take all this stuff with me.

1608. Still sitting in those tombs over there.

  1609. People just steal it.

  1610. That's not what matters.

1611. And Jesus is going to get into this

  1612. here in a minute.

1613. He's going to show us

1614. the same truths in the Sermon on the Mount

1615. in these next few sermons.

1616. That where our treasure is,

1617. there where our heart be also.

  1618. Brother Garrett preached it

  1619. last Sunday.

1620. So the real question is,

1621. what are you living for?

1622. Have you prepared for eternity?

  1623. Are you thinking,

1624. man, I've got plenty of time.

  1625. I'm living my life.

1626. Eat, drink, and be merry.

1627. I mean, I've got so many things.

1628. I'll worry about that later.

  1629. Now Jesus says,

1630. you need to worry about it right now.

  1631. That's what matters.

1632. Would you stand with your heads bowed

1633. and with your eyes closed?

  1634. Amen.

  1635. Amen.

  1636. Amen.
