  1. Luke chapter number 12. It's good to be in the Lord's house today. I appreciate Brother Jared.

  2. Some things moved around on the singing schedule, and it kind of worked out perfectly with our message today.

  3. You found your place there in Luke chapter number 12. You can stand for the reading of God's word if you're able to.

  4. We're going to step out of our Luke series for the next few weeks, so this will be our last time in there.

  5. We're coming into Palm Sunday next week, and then Easter, and then after Easter, we're kind of looking at a little different view from there.

  6. And I'm excited about that, excited about Easter Sunday. Hope that you're preparing for it, inviting somebody.

  7. Planning on being here in the Lord's house, but we're here today in our series in the Gospel of Luke.

  8. And these are some tough verses and just some truths that we're wrestling with here.

  9. And I talked to Brother Garrett about it and trying to get his opinion on it.

  10. But I'm thankful that we're going to work through it together, and the Lord has something for us, I know.

  11. So you found your place there in Luke chapter 12. We're going to begin reading in verse 35 where the Bible says this.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  12. Let your loins be girded about and your lights burning.

  13. And ye yourselves liken to men that wait for their Lord when he will return from the wedding,

  14. that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

  15. Blessed are those servants whom the Lord, when he cometh, shall find watching.

  16. Verily I say unto you that he, the master, shall gird himself and make them to sit down to meet,

  17. and will come forth and serve them.

  18. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, so come in the evening or come in the middle of the night,

  19. and find them so, blessed are those servants.

  20. And this know that if the good men of the house had known what hour the thief would come,

  21. he would have watched and not suffered his house to be broken through.

  22. Be ye, verse 40, excuse me, be ye therefore ready also.

  23. For the Son of Man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

  24. Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us or even to all?

  25. And the Lord said unto him,

  26. Who then is the faithful and wise steward,

  27. whom his Lord shall make ruler over his household,

  28. to give him their portion of meat in due season?

  29. Blessed is the servant whom the Lord, when he cometh, shall find so doing.

  30. Of a truth I say unto you that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.

  31. But and if the servant saith in his heart,

  32. My Lord delayeth his coming,

  33. and shall begin to beat the men servants and maid servants,

  34. and to eat and drink and to be drunken,

  35. the Lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him,

  36. at an hour when he is not aware,

  37. and will cut him in sunder,

  38. and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

  39. And that servant which knew the Lord's will,

  40. and prepared not himself,

  41. neither did according to his will,

  42. shall be beaten with many stripes.

  43. But he that knew not,

  44. and did not commit things worthy of stripes,

  45. shall be beaten with few stripes,

  46. for unto whomsoever much is given,

  47. of him shall much be required,

  48. and to whom men have committed much,

  49. of him they will ask the more.

  50. Brother Jared just sang a song,

  51. at the midnight cry,

  52. we'll be going home.

  53. But that's only if you're ready.

  54. And really what Jesus is calling us to,

  55. here in Luke 12,

  56. is to be ready.

  57. Because it's going to happen.

  58. And we're going to get into this,

  59. but people say,

  60. well,

  61. when's he coming?

  62. It's been 2,000 years.

  63. He's coming.

  64. It says it over,

  65. and over,

  66. and over.

  67. And maybe it's not like waiting to buy your tickets for the last day.

  68. Free announcement right there.

  69. We can't wait and say,

  70. oh,

  71. I have time.

  72. Here's what Jesus says.

  73. Be ready.

  74. We don't need to get ready someday.

  75. We need to be ready today.

  76. And that's what we're going to look at here this morning.

  77. Let's ask the Lord to bless our time.

  78. Father,

  79. thank you for your word,

  80. and thank you that we can open it.

  81. Thank you we have our own copies.

  82. That we can dig in,

  83. and we can see what you have for us.

  84. But Lord,

  85. we ask now,

  86. that as we come here as a church family,

  87. that you would just quiet our hearts,

  88. and our minds,

  89. and the busyness of life,

  90. and the world around us.

  91. And Lord,

  92. I pray that you would just take this text,

  93. Lord,

  94. and you would use it to remind us,

  95. and really to check inventory of our life,

  96. to make sure that we're ready.

  97. Lord,

  98. when you come again,

  99. I want to be ready.

  100. I want to see you face to face,

  101. and to know that I've done everything I can to serve you.

  102. Lord,

  103. maybe there is somebody here today,

  104. that maybe knew the songs we sang,

  105. and knows some of the verses here in the word of God,

  106. but has never made it a personal decision,

  107. for you to be their Lord and Savior.

  108. Lord,

  109. I pray that today would be that day.

  110. Lord,

  111. I pray you would be with me now.

  112. You would just guide my thoughts,

  113. and my words.

  114. You would clear my mind.

  115. Lord,

  116. we ask all this in your son's precious name.

  117. Amen.

  118. Thank you so much for standing.

  119. You may be seated.

  120. Who checked the weather app,

  121. before you came to church this morning?

  122. A few of you did.

  123. How many check the weather app,

  124. every single day?

  125. Some of you just,

  126. man,

  127. some of you are just living life on the edge.

  128. I mean,

  129. that's like one of the first things I do,

  130. you know,

  131. and I remember checking last week,

  132. and I thought,

  133. wait,

  134. it's going to be 20 on Monday,

  135. and it's going to be 120 on Sunday.

  136. What is going on here?

  137. And some of you might have,

  138. somebody in the family uses a different weather app.

  139. We got competing weather apps in the family,

  140. and we're like,

  141. what weather app are you using?

  142. I mean,

  143. one of them will say,

  144. you know,

  145. it's going to be sunny all day,

  146. and another says scattered thunderstorms.

  147. So we're not sure to wear a jacket,

  148. or to bring sunscreen.

  149. We're not really sure what's going on there,

  150. and I love weather forecasters.

  151. I wish I had their job.

  152. I mean,

  153. they're never right,

  154. and they still have a job.

  155. I mean,

  156. because when they say,

  157. it's not going to drop an ounce,

  158. I mean,

  159. we're going to get stuck in a monsoon out here,

  160. and vice versa,

  161. when there's 90% chance of rain,

  162. not a drop falls.

  163. I think we had a week like that a couple weeks ago.

  164. They say,

  165. it's going to rain every single day.

  166. It didn't rain any days at all,

  167. and it's just kind of what it is.

  168. But it's not just the forecast,

  169. the weather forecast that we check.

  170. There's all kinds of forecasts we check.

  171. Maybe it's the economic forecast.

  172. I try not to check that,

  173. because that's bleak.

  174. You know,

  175. it just feels like,

  176. ah,

  177. this is bad.

  178. The country's in worse shape than I'm in.

  179. Maybe it's the future of the country,

  180. the news.

  181. I mean,

  182. we look at what's happening on the world stage,

  183. and we're trying to kind of figure out,

  184. what's going on,

  185. and how's this going to affect me,

  186. and you know,

  187. we're feeling the pinch at the pump,

  188. so to speak,

  189. and of all these things,

  190. and we're trying to say,

  191. when's this forecast going to change?

  192. And if you read the news,

  193. or watch it long enough,

  194. you're going to hear things like this.

  195. These are unprecedented times.

  196. It's uncertain.

  197. The future is unpredictable.

  198. We think and say things like this.

  199. I've never seen it this bad.

  200. Well,

  201. come to find out,

  202. if you study history,

  203. every generation has said this very same thing.

  204. In fact,

  205. this world's not going to get better.

  206. The Bible makes it clear,

  207. that it's going to wax worse and worse,

  208. until the day that Christ comes,

  209. and yet,

  210. in the middle of all the uncertainty,

  211. in the middle of the competing,

  212. and differing forecast,

  213. Jesus reminds us,

  214. that we have something in the world,

  215. doesn't have,

  216. and we know Him as Savior.

  217. That not only do we have a Savior,

  218. who knows the future,

  219. here's the best part,

  220. He holds the future in His hand.

  221. That nothing is going to happen,

  222. without His say so.

  223. And when it comes to the return of Jesus Christ,

  224. I just want to remind us,

  225. before we kind of jump into the text here,

  226. that we're not dealing with some minor doctrine,

  227. found in Scripture.

  228. This is not some side issue,

  229. that really weird people get lost in the weeds,

  230. in the book of Revelation,

  231. and write really weird books about.

  232. Because they do.

  233. I don't know if you know this,

  234. but there was a book written,

  235. 88 Reasons Why Jesus Is Coming in 1988.

  236. Anybody ever heard of that book?

  237. He didn't come in 1988.

  238. But we get all weirded out about it,

  239. and we're so worried about all of these things,

  240. and when we think of the second coming of Christ,

  241. it's not calling us to predict it.

  242. Nobody knows when that's going to happen.

  243. The Father knows,

  244. He's going to tell His Son,

  245. to go get the children.

  246. We know that,

  247. but the idea,

  248. every time we see the second coming is this,

  249. be ready.

  250. It's coming.

  251. I remember when,

  252. I got old enough,

  253. when my parents would go run an errand,

  254. or go to dinner,

  255. they would leave me at home.

  256. And I'd say,

  257. what time,

  258. what time do you think you're going to be home?

  259. Not because I cared about their safety.

  260. Not because I cared about what they were doing.

  261. I just want to know,

  262. how late can I wait,

  263. to start picking up the absolute disaster,

  264. that I made?

  265. Anybody else ever operated that way?

  266. Okay.

  267. That's how it is.

  268. But that's not how we're supposed to live as believers.

  269. That's really not how anybody's supposed to live.

  270. And the point of this is,

  271. is Jesus is addressing a crowd,

  272. and there were believers there,

  273. there were unbelievers,

  274. and the theme is the same,

  275. be ready for it.

  276. And this theme of the second coming is,

  277. in 260 chapters in the New Testament,

  278. there are over 300 references,

  279. to the second coming of Christ.

  280. When you kind of parse it out,

  281. it's about one in every 25 verses,

  282. in the New Testament,

  283. speak of this.

  284. So the return of Christ is,

  285. it's not just a possibility,

  286. it's a certainty.

  287. And that's how it is portrayed,

  288. and that is how it is given,

  289. in the New Testament.

  290. As we've kind of made our way,

  291. here in the Gospel of Luke,

  292. and especially chapter 12,

  293. we kind of see this natural progression.

  294. That Jesus is teaching about,

  295. living our life,

  296. not just for the here and now.

  297. A few weeks back,

  298. we looked at a parable he gave,

  299. about the rich fool,

  300. who was living life for himself,

  301. and life was good,

  302. and the harvest was great,

  303. in fact it was so great,

  304. he had to tear his barns down,

  305. and build bigger barns,

  306. to store all of his stuff.

  307. And it just shows us a life,

  308. that it was lived for greed,

  309. it wasn't looking for the future,

  310. it wasn't planning for anything,

  311. but the here and now.

  312. And he said,

  313. hey let's just eat,

  314. drink and be merry,

  315. because this is all life is about.

  316. And then Jesus moved in,

  317. kind of addressing the believers,

  318. that many of them,

  319. would have not had a lot of things.

  320. Their harvest year,

  321. wasn't maybe that great.

  322. And because of that,

  323. anxiousness and worry,

  324. can begin to creep in our life.

  325. And we can think,

  326. well what if I don't have enough?

  327. I'm trying to plan,

  328. I'm trying to do this,

  329. but Lord I have all of these things,

  330. and he reminds us,

  331. how much he loves us.

  332. He reminds us that our father,

  333. he cares for the ravens,

  334. and he cares for the lilies,

  335. and he knows what we need.

  336. So instead of worrying about,

  337. what we're going to eat,

  338. what we're going to wear,

  339. and where we're going to go,

  340. here's what we need to worry about,

  341. here's what we need to focus on,

  342. him.

  343. Seek ye first the kingdom of God,

  344. and his righteousness.

  345. And I'm kind of building off of those two stories,

  346. and those two truths there,

  347. he says,

  348. here's how you should live because of that.

  349. You should live with readiness.

  350. And readiness for Christ's return,

  351. here's what it does,

  352. it's an antidote for both greed and worry.

  353. It helps us to move past those,

  354. if we think about it this way,

  355. if I know he's coming,

  356. I don't have to cling to all the things here on this earth.

  357. I don't have to build bigger barns,

  358. and rent more storage units,

  359. and if I know he's coming,

  360. I don't have to fear tomorrow.

  361. The certainty that he's coming,

  362. should buoy our hearts.

  363. And here's the main idea,

  364. that we kind of see through this text.

  365. that being ready is not knowing,

  366. it's not about knowing when he's coming,

  367. but it's about living in such a way,

  368. that it wouldn't matter if he came today.

  369. That if we saw Christ face to face,

  370. we could stand before him,

  371. knowing we have lived our life,

  372. in a way that is pleasing to him.

  373. As children of the Father,

  374. we are called to serve him.

  375. So if you're taking notes here today,

  376. here's the question we can answer through this text.

  377. How do we live ready for Jesus' return?

  378. He's calling us to be ready.

  379. He said it over and over,

  380. be ready, be ready.

  381. If he's calling us to be ready,

  382. what does it look like?

  383. And Jesus gives us some clear pictures here,

  384. of what it does.

  385. And if we're going to live ready,

  386. it's going to show up in certain ways.

  387. Number one, we're going to live a prepared life.

  388. We're going to be prepared.

  389. Look at verse number 35.

  390. Let your loins be girded,

  391. and your lights burning.

  392. And ye yourselves liken to men

  393. that wait for their Lord

  394. when he will return from a wedding,

  395. that when he cometh and knocketh,

  396. they may open unto him immediately.

  397. Now sometimes when Jesus starts giving

  398. kind of these illustrations

  399. and these parables,

  400. to us we think,

  401. what is he talking about?

  402. I mean, we're talking about robes

  403. and lights and servants.

  404. But to the crowd that was gathered,

  405. to his disciples that were there,

  406. they would have understood immediately

  407. what he was saying.

  408. These were things they would have dealt with

  409. in their own everyday life.

  410. And really, the idea that he's painting

  411. right off the bat

  412. is being ready for Jesus

  413. is not some casual,

  414. relaxed way of living.

  415. No, what he's showing us

  416. in these opening verses,

  417. it's a picture of alertness.

  418. It's a picture of intention.

  419. It's a picture of readiness.

  420. See, the idea is not just being awake.

  421. It's being prepared for action.

  422. Don't you love when somebody calls you

  423. in the morning

  424. and you answer it?

  425. I mean, you have to say hello

  426. like three times before you answer.

  427. You're like, hello, hello, hello.

  428. Because you don't want to know

  429. you were maybe just kind of dozing.

  430. I'm the only person

  431. that's ever done that.

  432. And it still doesn't work out

  433. and they say,

  434. preacher, did I wake you up?

  435. Like, no.

  436. Listen, I might be awake,

  437. but I'm not ready to do anything.

  438. Oh, no, I'm just getting up.

  439. No, I'm not.

  440. I'm just laying there.

  441. I'm just being super lazy.

  442. I was awake.

  443. It really, the call didn't wake me up,

  444. but I wasn't ready to do anything.

  445. If it would have been

  446. something ready to go,

  447. I would have said,

  448. well, I'm going to,

  449. actually, I need to get ready.

  450. I haven't really done that.

  451. But see, in this culture,

  452. Jesus was painting something

  453. they would have understood

  454. and he says in verse 35,

  455. let your loins be girded about.

  456. The idea was that

  457. they would wear these long robes.

  458. We talked about this

  459. in our study in Peter

  460. a couple weeks ago.

  461. That the men would wear

  462. long, flowy robes.

  463. They would come down

  464. to their ankles.

  465. And the thought is this.

  466. You couldn't do a whole lot

  467. of activity in that kind of garb.

  468. That didn't lend itself to work.

  469. It didn't lend itself to action.

  470. What they would have to do

  471. is they would have to kind of

  472. pull the robe up

  473. and gird it within their belt.

  474. So they would be able to do things.

  475. You couldn't move freely.

  476. You couldn't run.

  477. You couldn't serve effectively

  478. until you were girded.

  479. And what Jesus is showing is

  480. that's the kind of readiness

  481. that he calls us to live by.

  482. Not this passiveness.

  483. Hey, I'm awake.

  484. I'm here.

  485. It's Sunday.

  486. I'm in church.

  487. It's not just about

  488. doing certain things

  489. in the Christian life.

  490. It's about preparing for it

  491. and being ready

  492. and being active about it.

  493. It's about being intentional

  494. about the things of God.

  495. It's a life that is positioned

  496. to respond in a moment's notice.

  497. You ever see when they call on the,

  498. when a firefighter,

  499. they get a call?

  500. I mean, they can be playing cards,

  501. eating, they've been sleeping,

  502. but as soon as that call comes,

  503. I mean, they're closed.

  504. All their gear is ready to go

  505. and they jump right in.

  506. I mean, they're out of that firehouse

  507. in no time.

  508. Listen, that's the picture

  509. that Jesus says,

  510. that's how you should live.

  511. A servant in these days,

  512. they couldn't say,

  513. well, I don't feel like serving today.

  514. That wasn't an option.

  515. That was their job.

  516. That is who they were.

  517. You say, well, preacher,

  518. what does it look like

  519. to have our loins girded about?

  520. I think for us today,

  521. it looks kind of like

  522. making time with God a priority

  523. and not an afterthought.

  524. Sometimes we just read our Bible

  525. when it's convenient.

  526. Sometimes we read it

  527. and we don't even know

  528. that we read it.

  529. You ever driven somewhere

  530. and thought to yourself,

  531. how did I get here?

  532. You're like,

  533. hopefully I was awake the whole time.

  534. But sometimes that's how

  535. we treat our relationship with God.

  536. We're kind of on cruise control.

  537. It's just kind of

  538. an everyday normal thing

  539. and we're not really

  540. pouring into it

  541. and being intentional.

  542. Maybe being ready,

  543. it's keeping short accounts

  544. with God

  545. when it comes to our sin.

  546. Listen, I'm thankful

  547. that I'm saved by grace.

  548. I'm thankful that

  549. all my sins are under the blood.

  550. But here's the reality

  551. that I still struggle with sin.

  552. I still deal with it

  553. on a daily basis.

  554. I'm looking forward to a day

  555. when I don't.

  556. I'm looking forward to a day

  557. when all things are made new

  558. and all things are passed away

  559. and sin is no more.

  560. But until that day,

  561. even those that know

  562. Christ as their Savior,

  563. we need to ask for forgiveness.

  564. Listen, when I see the Lord

  565. face to face,

  566. I don't want there to be

  567. a laundry list of things

  568. for weeks and months

  569. and years

  570. that I just said,

  571. I'll take care of that later.

  572. That's not being ready.

  573. That's not ready

  574. to move into action.

  575. I think it just means

  576. starting each day

  577. aware that you belong to Him.

  578. You read the New Testament.

  579. Almost every letter you read,

  580. almost every book you read,

  581. you're going to see them

  582. introduce themselves

  583. in some form or fashion of this.

  584. Paul, a servant of God.

  585. Peter, a servant of God.

  586. Jude, a bondservant.

  587. Listen, all of these men

  588. that wrote the Scriptures,

  589. all of those that serve God,

  590. they realize this,

  591. we're just servants.

  592. We have a master that loves us

  593. and we have given our life

  594. to serve Him.

  595. See, what Jesus is saying,

  596. listen, you don't need to

  597. live your spiritual life

  598. just half-dressed.

  599. I mean, you're kind of ready

  600. to do something,

  601. but you're hoping nobody calls.

  602. You ever been there?

  603. You're like,

  604. I'll help them if they call,

  605. but you're praying,

  606. Lord, please don't let them call me.

  607. That's not how Jesus calls us to live.

  608. And we may,

  609. it's not that we're saying

  610. no to serving God,

  611. we're just saying

  612. right now is not a good time.

  613. I think if we're not careful

  614. in our minds,

  615. we can say,

  616. well, I didn't say no,

  617. I just said not now.

  618. The idea is,

  619. I'll get serious about serving God

  620. when I get this taken care of

  621. and when the kids get

  622. a little bit older

  623. and when this happens and that.

  624. No, no, here's what Jesus says,

  625. be ready right now.

  626. It's not a wait for later,

  627. I'll deal with that sin eventually.

  628. It's not that big a deal.

  629. No, it is a big deal.

  630. We're going to celebrate Easter

  631. in a few weeks

  632. and we have to celebrate that

  633. because Jesus Christ

  634. took our sin debt

  635. on the cross of Calvary.

  636. This sin is a big deal

  637. and we shouldn't live

  638. just in a habitual state of it.

  639. No, a life that is prepared

  640. says this,

  641. I want to be right with God today.

  642. I mean, we understand

  643. in our other relationships,

  644. whether it's your marriage relationship,

  645. whether it's with kids,

  646. whether it's with your boss.

  647. Listen, when there's a short account

  648. and things are, you know,

  649. things are on the table,

  650. it makes that relationship

  651. a lot better.

  652. There's not this overwhelming cloud

  653. that's following.

  654. No, we don't live,

  655. we don't wait until a crisis comes

  656. to get our life in order.

  657. I think we see it

  658. all around our world.

  659. Listen, we don't need

  660. to wait for that.

  661. Listen, Jesus says,

  662. just be ready.

  663. Be ready.

  664. We don't want to try

  665. to find the Lord

  666. when difficulties come.

  667. No, we live in a way

  668. where nothing needs

  669. to be cleaned up

  670. if he came back right now.

  671. That's what he tells us

  672. to keep the lights on,

  673. to keep them burning.

  674. They were waiting

  675. for the Lord to return

  676. in verse 36,

  677. like a master

  678. that went away

  679. for a wedding.

  680. Listen,

  681. I love weddings for cake

  682. and that's about

  683. the only thing I like.

  684. I'm thinking,

  685. how long is it going

  686. to be until the cake?

  687. You know,

  688. that's like,

  689. we should reverse it

  690. and just eat the cake first,

  691. say congratulations,

  692. and then leave.

  693. You know,

  694. we're not there

  695. for them anyways.

  696. But when you study

  697. this culture,

  698. weddings,

  699. they didn't last

  700. like 30 minutes

  701. to an hour

  702. and had some cake.

  703. I mean,

  704. sometimes these were

  705. week-long processes.

  706. I mean,

  707. it was a giant celebration

  708. and the whole village

  709. would be involved

  710. and sometimes

  711. if you had family

  712. in another village,

  713. you'd have to travel to it.

  714. And the thought here

  715. is these servants,

  716. their master,

  717. went to a wedding.

  718. He doesn't know

  719. when he's coming back.

  720. You know,

  721. there's no timetable

  722. for these type

  723. of celebrations.

  724. But we find

  725. that they are ready.

  726. They're not waiting

  727. for him to come back.

  728. They're ready

  729. for him to come back.

  730. And that's when it comes

  731. to the second coming

  732. of Christ.

  733. God does not call us

  734. to be waiting on him.

  735. He calls us

  736. to be ready for him.

  737. Because when the master

  738. came home,

  739. they weren't asleep.

  740. They weren't half-dressed.

  741. They weren't kind of ready.

  742. No,

  743. they were ready

  744. to open the door.

  745. So how do we live

  746. ready for Christ's return?

  747. Number one,

  748. with a prepared life.

  749. And then number two,

  750. we live with a forward focus.

  751. With a forward focus.

  752. So these men

  753. and these servants

  754. that would have been

  755. waiting for him to come,

  756. verse 37 says,

  757. blessed are those servants

  758. whom the Lord

  759. when he cometh

  760. shall find watching.

  761. So the master,

  762. the idea is

  763. the master returns

  764. late at night.

  765. It's been a long journey.

  766. He didn't just get in his car.

  767. He didn't have a little car

  768. that drives itself.

  769. No,

  770. this would have been

  771. a difficult task.

  772. It would have been

  773. hard to get to.

  774. And when he comes home,

  775. the doors open immediately.

  776. This would be awesome.

  777. I'm going to teach my kids this.

  778. When I walk them,

  779. they just,

  780. yeah,

  781. I mean,

  782. how cool would that be?

  783. You ever been somewhere

  784. where they like,

  785. they treat you real fancy?

  786. You think,

  787. man,

  788. I'm super out of place here.

  789. But that was their job.

  790. I mean,

  791. he's about to step

  792. to open the door himself

  793. and here comes the door.

  794. It's open.

  795. The lights are burning.

  796. The house is clean.

  797. The servants are ready.

  798. They are excited

  799. and they are prepared

  800. to welcome their master back.

  801. And they ask,

  802. how was your trip?

  803. Did everything go well?

  804. Was it everything

  805. that you thought

  806. it was going to be?

  807. But then at the end

  808. of verse 37,

  809. something completely

  810. unexpected happens.

  811. The Bible says this,

  812. Verily I say unto you

  813. that he shall gird himself

  814. and make them

  815. to sit down to meet

  816. and will come forth

  817. and serve them.

  818. So they're excited

  819. and they're ready

  820. for their master to return.

  821. But when he gets home,

  822. he says,

  823. man,

  824. it was a great trip

  825. but I want you to sit down

  826. and I'm going to cook

  827. something for us.

  828. I'm going to feed us.

  829. I'm going to take care of us.

  830. I want you just to relax.

  831. I want you just to enjoy

  832. the blessings

  833. of being in my house,

  834. of being under my care.

  835. And when they would have heard this,

  836. when Jesus said this,

  837. they thought,

  838. whoa,

  839. that's not how this works.

  840. I mean,

  841. I think we can understand this

  842. even in the 21st century.

  843. Masters don't serve.

  844. Servants serve.

  845. That's how it works.

  846. That's how it's pictured

  847. really in different spots

  848. of scripture.

  849. But here's what Jesus does.

  850. That he flips that entire picture

  851. on its head

  852. to show them something

  853. much deeper.

  854. Here's what he wants them to see.

  855. Here's what he wants us to see.

  856. His heart.

  857. That's what he's showing us here.

  858. Because the master is Jesus.

  859. The one that is on a journey.

  860. The one that is going to prepare

  861. a place for us.

  862. He's the one that is pictured here.

  863. And he loves his servants deeply.

  864. And his heart is towards them.

  865. I mean,

  866. we saw this even when he was

  867. on this earth.

  868. You read John chapter 13

    John 13 chapter mention

  869. there in the upper room

  870. at the Lord's Supper.

  871. The Passover.

  872. What did Jesus do?

  873. He gird himself.

  874. And he got on his hands

  875. and his knees.

  876. And he washed their feet.

  877. That he loves them deeply.

  878. That his heart is towards them.

  879. And I don't want us

  880. to run past this.

  881. These servants did nothing

  882. to earn this privilege.

  883. They weren't on some scale

  884. as long as you serve really good

  885. then you're going to get

  886. really good things.

  887. No.

  888. Here's what it was.

  889. It was a blessing

  890. that was just given to them.

  891. And everything that we have

  892. in Christ.

  893. And the fact that we read

  894. those verses

  895. at the beginning of the service

  896. in John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  897. Because he's preparing

  898. a place for us

  899. it has nothing to do with us.

  900. But it has everything

  901. to do with him.

  902. That we have a God

  903. that loves us.

  904. That desires fellowship

  905. with us.

  906. And these servants

  907. are not being honored

  908. because they're perfect.

  909. Here's why they're being honored.

  910. Because they were faithful.

  911. That's what God's looking for.

  912. It's required in a steward

  913. that he be found faithful.

  914. That's what God is looking for.

  915. And the simple thought here

  916. is when we live

  917. with a forward focus

  918. the master, Jesus

  919. is going to be delighted

  920. in those that are ready

  921. for him.

  922. They were excited about it.

  923. They were looking forward to it.

  924. And it points us back

  925. to his heart

  926. in John 13.

  927. But here's the one

  928. here's the beautiful thing.

  929. One day we're going to

  930. sit at his table.

  931. We're going to feast with him.

  932. What a day that will be.

  933. You say,

  934. what's going to be there?

  935. Well,

  936. Chick-fil-A.

  937. Texas Roadhouse Rolls.

  938. HTO.

  939. And Blue Bell Ice Cream.

  940. With a little bit of coffee

  941. to top it off on the end.

  942. Listen, I don't know

  943. what's going to be there.

  944. But here's the beautiful thing.

  945. We're going to sit around

  946. the table with him.

  947. That he's invited us

  948. into the family.

  949. Listen, we're just servants.

  950. But he says, no,

  951. you're not just servants.

  952. You're my family.

  953. That we're heirs with Christ.

  954. That we're join heirs.

  955. That everything that Christ

  956. is set to inherit,

  957. so are we.

  958. What a beautiful thing.

  959. I'd be excited about that.

  960. I think we should live

  961. a little bit like,

  962. you know what,

  963. I think I'm going to be ready

  964. for that.

  965. If you had some great person

  966. come and say,

  967. hey listen,

  968. I'm going to come pick you up

  969. and I'm going to drive you here.

  970. I'm going to,

  971. you're going to do all this thing

  972. where I take you on a world tour.

  973. You can eat whatever you want.

  974. Say, I don't know

  975. if I'll be ready.

  976. I'll, I'll,

  977. if it happens,

  978. it happens.

  979. You would prepare for that.

  980. You would live

  981. with a forward focus.

  982. And see,

  983. when we begin to live this way

  984. and we,

  985. we know the Lord

  986. is our Savior

  987. and we're living

  988. not just for the here and now,

  989. it just simply looks,

  990. we're not living

  991. for the weekend anymore.

  992. We're not living

  993. for a paycheck.

  994. We're not living

  995. for a vacation.

  996. No,

  997. here's what we're living

  998. for,

  999. eternity.

  1000. That's,

  1001. that's the view

  1002. that Jesus calls us

  1003. to have.

  1004. It looks like

  1005. choosing obedience

  1006. even when it's costly.

  1007. These servants,

1008. you know what it costs them?

  1009. It costs them sleep.

1010. It costs them all these things.

  1011. But they were willing

  1012. to be obedient.

  1013. And one day

1014. it's going to come to pass,

  1015. listen,

  1016. you think,

  1017. well nobody down here

  1018. seems to know

  1019. that I do anything.

  1020. He does.

  1021. We're not serving

1022. to be seen of men.

  1023. We're serving

1024. because God has called us to.

  1025. It means investing

  1026. in people

  1027. instead of,

  1028. instead of just possessions.

  1029. These servants

  1030. weren't ready

1031. in the middle of the night

  1032. so their neighbors

  1033. could see them.

  1034. Their neighbors are sleeping.

  1035. No,

  1036. they're ready

  1037. because that's what

  1038. was expected of them.

  1039. That's what the master

  1040. had taught them.

  1041. That's what the master

  1042. wanted them to do.

  1043. And when we live

  1044. with this forward focus,

  1045. we stop asking,

1046. what do I get out of this?

1047. And we start asking ourselves,

  1048. what would please him

  1049. when he returns?

  1050. That's the thought

1051. that Jesus is teaching here.

  1052. So we live

  1053. with a prepared life.

  1054. We live with this

  1055. forward focus

1056. but he doesn't stop there.

  1057. Jesus reminds us this,

1058. that we need to live

  1059. with a sense

  1060. of urgency.

1061. You ever try to get

  1062. your kids ready

  1063. in a quick time?

  1064. Like,

  1065. hey,

1066. we got to get out of the house.

  1067. We're running late.

1068. Isn't that how it goes?

1069. We had a little kid

1070. like that when we played

  1071. tee ball.

  1072. I was like,

  1073. hey,

  1074. when you come around

  1075. third base,

1076. you got to run home

1077. as fast as you can.

  1078. He's like,

  1079. I'm like,

  1080. all right.

  1081. But listen,

1082. we need to be urgent

  1083. about what God

1084. has called us to do.

  1085. Verse number 39,

  1086. the Bible says this,

  1087. and this know

1088. that if the good man

  1089. of the house

  1090. had known

  1091. what hour the thief

  1092. would come,

  1093. he would have watched

  1094. and not suffered

1095. his house to be broken through.

  1096. Be therefore ready also

1097. for the Son of Man

  1098. cometh at an hour

  1099. when you think not.

  1100. So Jesus gives us

1101. kind of a weird picture

  1102. and he starts talking

  1103. about this guy

  1104. breaking into the house.

  1105. And thieves these days

1106. and in this time period,

  1107. they didn't,

  1108. they didn't like

  1109. break the door down.

  1110. No,

  1111. they would generally do

  1112. is these,

1113. these homes would have been

  1114. made of mud

  1115. and different things.

  1116. They would have just

  1117. dug a hole

1118. in the side of your house.

  1119. That's wild to me.

  1120. Can you imagine

  1121. just sleeping there

  1122. tonight at your home

  1123. and somebody just,

  1124. just comes in

  1125. like the Kool-Aid man

  1126. just coming right through

  1127. the,

  1128. right through the,

  1129. the wall.

1130. Like what in the world?

  1131. Now if you know

  1132. that person was coming

  1133. and they're like,

  1134. hey,

1135. I'm going to come rob you

  1136. at two o'clock,

  1137. I'm going to dig a hole

  1138. in your wall,

1139. you're going to be sitting

1140. on the other side of that

  1141. with a shotgun.

  1142. Why?

  1143. Because you're prepared.

1144. If you know a thief

1145. is coming to your house,

1146. you're going to be ready.

  1147. The,

  1148. the,

  1149. the picture is this,

  1150. that there's no warning

  1151. and there's no announcement.

1152. Everything's going to seem normal.

  1153. We,

1154. we even think it to ourselves

1155. and I think if we're not careful

  1156. as,

  1157. as believers,

  1158. we,

  1159. we would say,

  1160. oh,

1161. I know Jesus is coming back,

  1162. but we're not living

1163. with that sense of urgency.

  1164. If you,

1165. if you read some of the

  1166. New Testament passages

  1167. about it,

  1168. the Apostle Paul

  1169. lived with urgency.

  1170. You think,

  1171. man,

1172. how was Paul so effective?

  1173. He was urgent

  1174. about the master's business

  1175. because Paul said this,

  1176. we,

  1177. which are alive

  1178. and remain.

  1179. Here's when Paul thought

  1180. Jesus was coming,

  1181. when he was alive

1182. and he lived like that

  1183. and his ministry

  1184. looked like that.

  1185. But the,

  1186. the picture that Jesus

  1187. paints here

  1188. is this family's asleep,

  1189. the house is quiet

1190. and all of a sudden

1191. the wall is broken through

  1192. and that's how Jesus

1193. is going to come back.

  1194. as Bible believers,

  1195. we should believe

  1196. in the imminent return

  1197. of Christ.

  1198. And the language here,

  1199. it carries this idea

  1200. of something sudden

  1201. and decisive.

  1202. It's not a gradual,

  1203. it's not a delayed process.

1204. There's no easing into it.

  1205. When Jesus comes,

1206. it's going to be immediate,

1207. it's going to be final

1208. and there's going to be

  1209. no time to prepare

  1210. in that moment.

  1211. Because we celebrated Christmas,

  1212. the coming of Christ,

  1213. the first coming.

  1214. Listen,

1215. when he came the first time,

  1216. he came on mission

1217. to seek and to save

  1218. that which was lost.

1219. But when he comes again,

  1220. that's not how he's coming.

1221. He's coming as the king of kings.

1222. He's coming as the Lord of lords.

1223. He's coming as the judge

  1224. of all the earth.

  1225. That's who he is.

  1226. And people say,

1227. well, we don't have time

  1228. to get ready.

  1229. Oh no,

1230. we have had time to get ready.

  1231. The Lord's not slack

  1232. concerning his promises.

  1233. Some men count slackness,

  1234. but he's willing

  1235. and rather that all

  1236. should come to repentance.

1237. You know why he hasn't?

  1238. He hasn't come back

1239. because he so loved the world

1240. that he gave his only begotten son.

  1241. That's the only thing

  1242. that's holding him back.

  1243. Everything is already

  1244. in place for that.

  1245. And all throughout scripture,

  1246. we see this imagery

  1247. that Jesus is coming

1248. and he's going to come

1249. like a thief in the night.

  1250. You know,

  1251. sometimes you may

  1252. get something stolen

1253. and you don't even know

  1254. it was stolen.

  1255. I remember when I was

  1256. in high school,

1257. I heard a knock on my door

1258. and it was like 6.05

1259. and I was not alert.

  1260. I was not addressed.

  1261. I was not awake.

  1262. My dad's like,

  1263. who's at the door?

1264. And I run down there.

1265. It's the Flower Mound Police

  1266. where I grew up.

  1267. And they said,

  1268. we found your truck.

  1269. What?

  1270. Looked out there.

  1271. Sure enough,

1272. my truck was not out

  1273. in the driveway anymore.

  1274. They stole it.

  1275. They didn't tell me

  1276. they stole it.

  1277. I slept like a baby

  1278. that night.

1279. Get up in the morning.

  1280. They took it.

  1281. I went over.

  1282. They said,

  1283. it's over here.

  1284. I drove over there.

1285. They took my own gardening,

  1286. my dad's gardening bricks

1287. and took the wheels off it

  1288. and it was just

1289. sat in this lady's driveway.

1290. She's trying to get to work.

  1291. I was like,

  1292. well,

1293. they would have told me.

1294. I would have just let them

  1295. take it much nicer

1296. instead of ripping it all apart.

  1297. That's the idea.

1298. That Jesus is not a thief,

1299. but he wants us to picture

  1300. that's how quickly

  1301. it's going to happen.

  1302. That's how unexpectedly

  1303. it's going to happen.

1304. And here's what urgency does.

1305. It changes how you respond

  1306. to things right now.

  1307. He said,

1308. if you would have known

  1309. somebody's coming

  1310. to steal your hat,

1311. you would have stayed watch

  1312. all night.

1313. You would have been ready

  1314. for that.

1315. And here's what it means to us.

1316. It means that we don't

  1317. delay obedience.

  1318. There's a lot of things

  1319. we think,

  1320. well,

  1321. I don't know what the Lord

  1322. wants me to do.

  1323. We do.

  1324. Sometimes we just don't

  1325. want to do it.

1326. Right now is not a good time.

  1327. It's not delayed obedience.

1328. We don't put off repentance.

  1329. We don't assume

1330. that we have more time.

  1331. And that's why it's so vital

  1332. that whether it's in a service

  1333. like this,

1334. or it's in your own

  1335. Bible reading time,

1336. or even the Lord can

  1337. convict us in certain

  1338. different ways,

  1339. don't put it off.

1340. Just deal with it right then.

  1341. Lord,

  1342. would you help me?

  1343. Lord,

  1344. would you forgive me?

  1345. It means maybe speaking

  1346. to somebody about Christ

  1347. when the opportunity arises.

  1348. Oh,

1349. I'll talk to him next week.

  1350. No,

  1351. today's the day.

  1352. Now is the time.

1353. It means making things right,

  1354. maybe in a relationship,

1355. instead of letting things linger.

  1356. Because if we're honest,

  1357. sometimes we live like

  1358. we have unlimited tomorrows,

  1359. but we don't.

1360. We all like to think that.

1361. We don't want to think

1362. something can happen to me today,

  1363. or something can happen

  1364. to my family tomorrow,

  1365. but the reality is

  1366. we don't know.

1367. And before we move on,

1368. and we're going to hasten

1369. to a close here in a minute,

  1370. I just want to,

1371. I want us to make this personal.

1372. what if Jesus came back

  1373. before this service ended?

1374. What if the trumpet sounded

1375. before we made it to lunch?

  1376. I mean,

  1377. what if today

  1378. was the day

  1379. when Jesus came back?

  1380. Would there be anything

  1381. in your life

1382. you need to make right?

1383. Maybe you need to call somebody.

1384. Maybe you need to shoot

  1385. a text to them.

1386. Maybe you need to ask

1387. the Lord to forgive you.

1388. The Lord is just reminding us

1389. we need to live with urgency

  1390. because we don't know

1391. that we need to be ready.

1392. So how do we know

  1393. that we're truly living

1394. and we're truly ready for it?

  1395. Jesus shows us here

  1396. in verses 41 through 44.

  1397. He says,

  1398. we need to live

  1399. as faithful stewards.

1400. There in verse number 42,

  1401. He says,

1402. who then is a faithful

  1403. and wise steward

  1404. whom the Lord

1405. shall make rule over his house

1406. to give them their portion

1407. and meet in due season?

  1408. So He shows us

  1409. what a faithful servant

  1410. looks like.

  1411. A steward is this.

  1412. A steward's a manager.

  1413. A steward doesn't own anything.

  1414. He's the one

  1415. that's running the household.

  1416. He's the one

  1417. that the master

  1418. has left in charge.

  1419. He's been entrusted

  1420. with the responsibility

  1421. but really,

  1422. nothing in the house

  1423. belongs to Him.

  1424. He has a job

1425. that He's been called to do

  1426. and as stewards,

1427. we don't get to decide

1428. what we do with it.

  1429. We're just called

  1430. to handle it faithfully.

  1431. And Jesus wants us

1432. to see that one day

1433. the master's going to come back

1434. and He's going to ask

  1435. for an account.

  1436. Hey, what happened

  1437. when I was gone?

  1438. What did you do

  1439. when I was gone?

1440. How did you take care of this?

1441. Why didn't you do that?

1442. And we won't have time

1443. to really dig in here

1444. but here's what we are.

  1445. We're just stewards.

1446. And I want to remind you

  1447. that your time

  1448. and your gifts

  1449. and your opportunities,

1450. they don't belong to you.

1451. They've been entrusted to you.

1452. And the Lord wants to know this.

1453. What are you doing with it?

  1454. Here's what a faithful steward does.

  1455. He invested.

  1456. He works.

  1457. He serves.

  1458. He does that.

1459. And the scripture's very clear.

  1460. We don't have time

1461. to go into all that.

1462. We will give an account.

1463. If we know Him as our Savior,

  1464. not for salvation

1465. but for what we did for Him.

1466. What we did with what

  1467. He entrusted us to.

1468. And the question is not

  1469. how much you have,

  1470. it's how faithful

  1471. have you been

1472. with what you've been given.

1473. That's what the Lord wants to know.

  1474. How faithful are we?

1475. Listen, faithfulness is not flashy.

  1476. It's consistent.

  1477. It's obedient.

  1478. It's dependable.

1479. It looks like showing up

  1480. when nobody else

  1481. even knows you're there.

  1482. Like doing right

  1483. when it's inconvenient.

  1484. Like serving without recognition.

1485. And Jesus makes it clear

  1486. in verses 42 and 43

  1487. and verse 44

  1488. that that's not just

1489. for the here and now.

  1490. Faithfulness is going to

  1491. carry into eternity.

  1492. See, faithfulness

1493. is just going to show up

  1494. in everyday ordinary parts

  1495. of your life.

1496. It's not just what you do in church.

  1497. It's how you live

  1498. everywhere else too.

1499. It looks like being faithful at work

1500. when your boss isn't watching.

  1501. Listen, I know it's March Madness.

1502. It's the least productive week

  1503. of the whole thing.

1504. So me and Brother Garrett,

1505. we just watch it together

  1506. so we're unproductive together.

1507. But sometimes we just think,

1508. well, the boss doesn't know

  1509. I don't have to do that.

  1510. That's not what

  1511. a faithful steward does.

1512. It's not how we live our life.

  1513. Faithfulness just means

  1514. leading your home spiritually

  1515. even when it's hard.

  1516. Stewards show up consistently

  1517. not when it's convenient.

1518. That's not just talking about church.

1519. That's talking about our life.

  1520. It's talking about

1521. every area of our life.

1522. It means using your time wisely

1523. and your gifts to serve

  1524. and using the opportunities

  1525. God has given you

  1526. for His purpose.

  1527. And if Jesus evaluated

  1528. your life today,

1529. would He find you faithful

1530. with what He has given you?

1531. I pray that He would.

1532. But now Jesus gives us a warning

1533. and we'll look at this quickly.

  1534. Verse 45 and 46.

1535. We need to live by guarding our heart.

  1536. Verse 45.

1537. But and if that servant say in his heart,

1538. my Lord delayeth his coming

1539. and shall begin to beat

  1540. the men servants

  1541. and the maid servants

1542. and to eat and drink

  1543. and to be drunken.

1544. The Lord of that servant

1545. will come in a day

1546. when he looketh not for him

1547. and an hour when he is not aware

1548. and will cut him in sunder

1549. and will appoint his portion

  1550. with the unbelievers.

  1551. So what Jesus does

1552. is He contrasts a faithful servant

  1553. and an unfaithful servant.

1554. One that believes his Lord

1555. and trusts that He's going to return

  1556. and prepares for it

1557. and prepares his heart for it.

1558. And now He shows us a man

  1559. that says,

1560. well, He's not really coming.

  1561. Because this man

  1562. didn't have an urgency

1563. and he really didn't believe

1564. that his master was going to come back

  1565. at a certain time.

  1566. He thought,

  1567. hey, I'll get ready

  1568. when I know He's coming.

1569. I'm going to live my life,

1570. but when I get wind that He's coming,

  1571. then I'll change things.

1572. But we don't know when He's coming.

  1573. And this man,

1574. because he lived with this return

  1575. in his distant thinking,

  1576. the way he lived

  1577. became all about him.

1578. And it says He began to beat

  1579. the other servants

1580. and to eat and drink

1581. and it was all about him.

1582. Listen, this is not a lazy servant.

1583. This is an unfaithful servant.

1584. That he had the opportunity.

1585. He knew the master said,

  1586. I'm coming back.

1587. But he didn't do it.

1588. This man's not having a rough season.

1589. Here's what Jesus is picturing.

1590. This is someone who claimed

1591. to belong to the master,

1592. but his life didn't match up to it.

1593. See, his life told the story.

  1594. A changed heart

  1595. produces a changed life.

  1596. We can't say,

  1597. I'm ready,

1598. but everything in our life

  1599. doesn't look like we're ready.

  1600. Now sometimes, you know,

1601. it can look that way

  1602. because we've let sin

1603. build up in our life.

  1604. But sometimes it's because

  1605. we don't really

1606. know and believe the master.

1607. We think that's just an old book.

  1608. They've been saying for 2,000 years,

  1609. the world says,

  1610. where is he?

1611. Where's the promise of his coming?

  1612. He's not coming.

1613. We're just going to live.

1614. We're going to eat, drink,

  1615. and be merry.

1616. But he's going to come.

1617. And what Jesus reminds us

  1618. in these closing verses

  1619. is that everything

  1620. will be revealed

  1621. when he comes.

  1622. And because of that,

  1623. we must make sure

  1624. our life matches

  1625. our profession.

  1626. because he would say,

1627. well, I'm in the house.

1628. I have all these things.

1629. Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount,

1630. they're going to be in that day,

  1631. they're going to say,

  1632. Lord, Lord,

  1633. Master, Master,

  1634. didn't we?

  1635. He said,

  1636. depart from me.

  1637. I never knew you.

  1638. See,

1639. the truth will be known

  1640. on that day.

  1641. There will be justice.

  1642. And because of that,

1643. we see in these last closing verses

  1644. in verse number 48

1645. that we need to live

  1646. with eternal awareness.

1647. Jesus kind of really lays

1648. this principle of accountability down.

  1649. See,

  1650. in this culture,

1651. and really in our culture,

1652. the more responsibility you have,

1653. the more that was expected of you.

  1654. And the same applies

  1655. to us spiritually.

  1656. That you can know

  1657. all about the Bible.

1658. You can know the songs

  1659. we sang today.

1660. You can know some of these verses.

1661. But here's what Jesus is saying.

1662. Have you prepared your life for that?

1663. Because we can't just live

1664. with a here and now.

  1665. We need to live

  1666. with this eternal awareness

1667. that it is appointed unto man

  1668. once to die,

  1669. the Bible says,

  1670. and after this,

  1671. the judgment.

  1672. That every single person

1673. will stand before the Lord

  1674. one day

  1675. and give an account.

  1676. I'm thankful

1677. that when I stand before the Lord,

1678. my sins are under the blood.

1679. But there's going to be people there

  1680. that say,

  1681. well,

1682. I did all these things,

1683. but the Lord's going to remind us

  1684. that you didn't prepare.

1685. You just lived your life

  1686. for yourself.

1687. You didn't do the things

1688. that I asked you to do.

1689. And it reminds us here

  1690. in these verses,

  1691. and we're going to,

  1692. we don't have time

1693. to get into all this,

  1694. but God's judgment

  1695. is not random.

  1696. He's not picking

1697. and choosing people to judge.

  1698. No,

  1699. you're either prepared

  1700. or you're not.

  1701. You're either ready

1702. or you're living for yourself.

1703. And it's going to be precise.

1704. It's going to be just.

1705. It's going to be perfectly measured.

  1706. And the idea is

  1707. with greater knowledge,

  1708. it brings greater accountability.

  1709. I mean,

1710. just bring it right here

  1711. where we live.

  1712. Think about how much

  1713. you know about God.

  1714. Many of you probably

  1715. brought your own copy

1716. of the Word of God in here.

  1717. The Gospel is clearly,

  1718. you probably heard

  1719. the Gospel clearly preached

1720. over and over and over.

1721. You have access to truth

  1722. anytime you want it.

1723. We try to the best

  1724. of our ability

  1725. here at Central

  1726. to faithfully teach

  1727. and preach

  1728. every single week.

1729. The short idea is this,

1730. we have been given much.

1731. But for whosoever much is given,

  1732. much is required.

  1733. And see,

  1734. eternal awareness takes

  1735. how seriously

1736. you take your life here.

1737. It means you recognize this,

1738. I will stand before God one day.

  1739. We all will.

1740. But we need to live

  1741. with that awareness.

  1742. And that affects

1743. how you respond to truth.

  1744. It affects

  1745. what you do

1746. with what you've been taught.

  1747. It affects how seriously

  1748. you take obedience.

  1749. Listen,

  1750. being prepared

1751. is not just hearing sermons,

  1752. it's responding to them.

  1753. It's not just reading

  1754. the Word of God,

  1755. it's allowing it

  1756. to transform your life.

  1757. It's not just about

  1758. knowing the truth,

  1759. but actually living.

  1760. It's not just about

  1761. attending the church,

  1762. but applying the truth

  1763. to your life.

1764. That we have to realize

  1765. that we're a sinner

  1766. that needs saving

1767. and we call upon Christ

  1768. because God's not going

1769. to ask us one day,

  1770. what did you hear?

1771. He's going to ask this,

  1772. what did you do

  1773. with what you heard?

1774. Because both of these men,

  1775. these servants,

1776. the faithful and the unfaithful,

  1777. they heard the master

  1778. say I'm coming.

  1779. One prepared

  1780. and one didn't.

  1781. That's what Jesus

  1782. teaches us right here.

  1783. Here's what I want us

  1784. to take home today.

  1785. The goal isn't

  1786. to be ready someday.

1787. The call is to live ready today.

  1788. He's coming.

  1789. Are we ready?

  1790. Would you stand

  1791. with our heads bowed?
