  1. Luke chapter number 13, Luke chapter number 13, if you're able to stand for the reading of God's word, I ask that you would.

  2. Luke chapter number 13, what a beautiful song, what a reminder.

  3. It goes right along with the message this morning.

  4. I'm going to preach a message entitled this, Living on Borrowed Time.

  5. Living on Borrowed Time.

  6. And I'm enjoying this study through the Gospel of Luke.

  7. I hope it's been a help to you.

  8. And Jesus is, really this is kind of the conclusion of the sermon Jesus has been preaching since the start of chapter number 12.

  9. And really the entire theme of this sermon is this, be ready.

  10. Because the Lord is coming back.

  11. I love that song, it is well, I think we could sing it every Sunday and I still wouldn't tire of it.

  12. But I love that last verse that He's coming back.

  13. And so since He's coming back, here's what we need to be doing.

  14. We need to be ready.

  15. And that's what Jesus wants us to know.

  16. He wants us to understand that truth.

  17. Whether we know Him as our Lord and Savior, we still need to be ready.

  18. And if we don't know the Lord as our Savior, we need to make sure that we are ready.

  19. And Jesus shows us exactly how to do that.

  20. So we're going to read the first nine verses here in Luke chapter number 13.

  21. Have a word of prayer and then jump right in.

  22. The Bible says this,

  23. They were present at that season some that told Him of the Galileans,

  24. whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

  25. And Jesus answering said unto them,

  26. Suppose ye, these Galileans, were sinners above all the Galileans,

  27. because they suffered such things?

  28. I tell you, nay.

  29. But except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

  30. Or those eighteen upon whom the Tower of Siloam fell and slew them,

  31. think ye they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?

  32. I tell you, nay.

  33. But except ye repent, ye shall likewise perish.

  34. I just want to throw this in here.

  35. You notice Jesus said the same thing twice.

  36. It's kind of like when your mom repeats something twice.

  37. You probably should pay attention.

  38. So Jesus, when He says things back to back like this,

  39. He wants us to understand this truth.

  40. And so to understand the truth, He illustrates this by giving a parable in verse 6.

  41. And He spake also this parable.

  42. A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard,

  43. and he came and sought fruit thereon and found none.

  44. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard,

  45. Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this tree,

  46. and find none.

  47. Cut it down.

  48. Why cumbereth it the ground?

  49. And he answering said unto him,

  50. Lord, let it alone this year also till I dig about it and dung it.

  51. And if it bear fruit, well.

  52. And if not, then after that shall cut it down.

  53. Jesus, it seems kind of, the illustration here at the beginning,

  54. it seems like what in the world is He talking about?

  55. But He's really giving us this idea that we have this illusion,

  56. we have all this time.

  57. But He gives two specific tragedies,

  58. because that morning, they didn't think those things were going to happen to them.

  59. But they did.

  60. And Jesus is saying, listen, we don't know how much time we have.

  61. Every breath is borrowed.

  62. We're living on this borrowed time.

  63. So how do we move forward?

  64. How do we prepare our lives?

  65. And that's what He's going to show us here this morning.

  66. So let's go ahead and ask Him to help us.

  67. Father, thank You for this time together.

  68. Lord, thank You for Your Word that we can open it up.

  69. And Lord, I know there's been a lot of things going on in a lot of lives this week.

  70. We're busy.

  71. We have a busy week coming up.

  72. But Lord, I pray You would help us just to slow down.

  73. Lord, help us to do some evaluation,

  74. take some inventory on how we're spending our time.

  75. Lord, are we living a life that is ready for You to come back?

  76. Are we on mission for You?

  77. Lord, I pray that You would just use this text,

  78. You would use Your Word today to speak to our hearts,

  79. to challenge us, to convict us,

  80. to encourage us where need be.

  81. Lord, I do pray that if there is somebody here today

  82. that does not know You as their Savior,

  83. Lord, they're not trusting in other things.

  84. They must trust in You, Lord,

  85. that today would be that day.

  86. Lord, I pray You would be with me now.

  87. You would empty me of self.

  88. You would cleanse me of sin.

  89. You would fill me with Your Spirit.

  90. Lord, I want to be a help to Your people this morning

  91. as You've been a help to me even studying this text.

  92. Lord, I pray You would receive all the honor and glory

  93. that's due Your name.

  94. We ask it in Christ's name.

  95. Amen.

  96. Thank you so much for standing.

  97. You may be seated.

  98. I think I already know the answer to this question

  99. because we were a slow-arriving crowd this morning.

  100. But I'm going to ask anyways,

  101. how many of you hit the snooze button this morning?

  102. I feel like we are liars in here.

  103. Like, not me.

  104. How many of you just, okay,

  105. how many of you even set an alarm?

  106. Yeah, there you go.

  107. Man, you're living by faith, man.

  108. That's next-level stuff right there.

  109. I appreciate that.

  110. But for those that raised your hand

  111. and those that were afraid to raise your hand

  112. but still hit the snooze button,

  113. I mean, if you're like me,

  114. the alarm went off

  115. and your first thought was either,

  116. ugh,

  117. and then it was followed by

  118. just a few more minutes.

  119. And we all know how that goes.

  120. Five minutes turns to ten minutes.

  121. Ten minutes turns to fifteen,

  122. and before you know it,

  123. you're running around like a chicken

  124. with your head cut off.

  125. You're yelling at the kids to get in the car.

  126. You're frustrated by everything.

  127. Every single light was red,

  128. and if you live on the wrong side of the tracks,

  129. you are stopped by the Gainesville train

  130. that is ever faithful to be there

  131. when you're running late.

  132. I mean, that's how I think.

  133. I'm like,

  134. do I have time to go down California

  135. or do I have to drive all the way to 82

  136. just in case the train comes?

  137. You know,

  138. and I see people like that,

  139. and I've been there too,

  140. and they're mad at the lights,

  141. and I tell them,

  142. I can't believe all these lights,

  143. and you know,

  144. the reality is if you just got up on time

  145. and left a little bit earlier,

  146. you'd be okay.

  147. But it's one of those things,

  148. and we've all been there,

  149. and honestly,

  150. the snooze button was okay

  151. when it comes to your morning alarm,

  152. but the problem is,

  153. is it's not just something we do

  154. with an alarm clock.

  155. I think we do it in our life often,

  156. whether it's spiritual things

  157. or just everyday life.

  158. It's not that we're saying no to certain things.

  159. We're just saying,

  160. now's not a great time.

  161. Hey, a couple more days.

  162. Next week,

  163. when it slows down,

  164. and I think we're all guilty of assuming

  165. we have more time than we do.

  166. We think things like this.

  167. I'll get to it later.

  168. I'll deal with that tomorrow.

  169. Some of us have been dealing with saying that

  170. for weeks now.

  171. I'll deal with that tomorrow,

  172. and you know,

  173. we just kind of want to keep pushing it down the road.

  174. We say things like,

  175. I got plenty of time.

  176. You know,

  177. and I was like that in school.

  178. I got plenty of time to finish this project.

  179. You know,

  180. I just figured this.

  181. I work better under pressure,

  182. so I'm just going to wait

  183. until like the last minute,

  184. then it's going to really help me focus.

  185. But the problem is,

  186. is we think we have all this time,

  187. and then suddenly,

  188. we don't.

  189. That things that's been on the calendar for months,

  190. that deadline at work,

  191. it just seems to have snuck up on you.

  192. That bill that you were going to pay,

  193. guess what?

  194. You forgot to pay it.

  195. This is your friendly reminder.

  196. Check your bills.

  197. Pay them.

  198. A conversation you may have wished you would have had

  199. before it was too late.

  200. But here's what's even more serious,

  201. is that we don't just do it with everyday things.

  202. I think if we're honest,

  203. sometimes we do it with spiritual things.

  204. We do it with eternal things.

  205. We assume that we have more time to get right with God.

  206. We think to ourselves,

  207. the Lord knows I love Him,

  208. but I'll just deal with this later.

  209. Maybe you're at a stage in your life,

  210. maybe young people think,

  211. I'll get more serious when I get a little bit older.

  212. I'll get more serious when this happens,

  213. and one day I'll really go all in for God.

  214. Listen, it doesn't matter if you're a teenager,

  215. or you're the oldest person in your room,

  216. today's the day to go all in.

  217. That's what Jesus calls.

  218. That's the life that He calls us to live,

  219. and Jesus is confronting that exact mindset

  220. here in Luke chapter number 13.

  221. And we read those first five verses,

  222. and we think, man,

  223. what did these two tragedies some 2,000 years ago

  224. have to do with us here at Central Baptist Church in 2026?

  225. Because really it has nothing to do with these tragedies.

  226. What Jesus is really trying to pull out

  227. and to put into our lives

  228. is that we need to live our life with some urgency.

  229. We need to be urgent about the things of God.

  230. It's time to be serious about dealing with repentance,

  231. about dealing with things in our life

  232. that are there that should not be.

  233. It reminds us of this simple reality.

  234. We are living on borrowed time.

  235. See, you don't control,

  236. if we're going to kind of think of an idea here,

  237. we don't control how much time we have.

  238. But what we can control

  239. is what we do with the time that we have.

  240. That's what Jesus wants us to understand.

  241. He wants us to be a people that live with urgency.

  242. So the question naturally becomes,

  243. how should we live knowing that we're on borrowed time?

  244. Because I think we understand that.

  245. We understand the reality of that.

  246. Here in the text,

  247. Jesus is going to give us three powerful reminders

  248. reminders about life and about time and about eternity.

  249. And the first thing that we see here is this.

  250. Number one,

  251. that tragedy is a warning,

  252. not a measure.

  253. Tragedy is a warning,

  254. not a measure.

  255. Verse number one,

  256. they were present at the season,

  257. some that told him of the Galileans

  258. whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

  259. Now, maybe to us,

  260. we're thinking,

  261. okay,

  262. I'm not really sure what that means.

  263. But you got to realize that the Bible,

  264. they would understand that.

  265. This would be like,

  266. this would be a major event in their history.

  267. This was something that didn't happen that long ago.

  268. Pilate is still alive.

  269. He is still in rule at this time.

  270. And this was shocking.

  271. I mean,

  272. it would be like if we said,

  273. you remember 9-11?

  274. I mean,

  275. many of us in this room,

  276. we would instantly know exactly what it was.

  277. And there's opinions about it.

  278. And there's all kinds of situations about it.

  279. But that was kind of the situation here.

  280. Now,

  281. we don't know all the details,

  282. but more than likely,

  283. this atrocity took place during Passover.

  284. It would have been the only time

  285. that these ordinary worshipers,

  286. these Galileans,

  287. would have been allowed

  288. kind of into the temple grounds area.

  289. They would have traveled in for Passover.

  290. We see that throughout the Gospels.

  291. And they would have been there

  292. and they would have been directly involved.

  293. They would have purchased a lamb

  294. or a turtle doves,

  295. depending on their financial state.

  296. And they would have been in that opportunity.

  297. And see,

  298. these Galileans,

  299. they had simply come to worship the Lord.

  300. Now,

  301. some historians say that

  302. they were using some of this opportunity

  303. to protest against Pilate,

  304. to protest against the Romans.

  305. We've seen that.

  306. Israel did not like the fact

  307. that Rome was in charge

  308. and they kind of had their hands

  309. in some of the religious ceremonies.

  310. But we don't know what the details were,

  311. but Pilate decided,

  312. you know what,

  313. we're just going to kill them right here.

  314. And so,

  315. he had his officers,

  316. his police,

  317. his soldiers,

  318. they would have killed them

  319. right there in the temple grounds.

  320. I mean,

  321. we see things,

  322. we see tragedies like this

  323. even in our culture.

  324. People have come in

  325. and shot at churches

  326. and different things like that.

  327. That's kind of what this was.

  328. That they were there just worshiping.

  329. They were there just serving the Lord

  330. and it was disturbing

  331. and it was violent

  332. and it was unforgettable.

  333. Everybody in town knew about it

  334. and it was the talk of the town.

  335. So,

  336. Jesus is preaching this sermon.

  337. If your Bible has red letters,

  338. I mean,

  339. he's talking

  340. and somebody's just in the middle of the sermon,

  341. hey,

  342. did you hear about this?

  343. What do you have to say about this,

  344. Jesus?

  345. You know,

  346. it kind of seems as an interruption.

  347. And here's the issue.

  348. The assumption in the crowd was this.

  349. Those people must have done something

  350. to deserve that.

  351. That was the way that they thought.

  352. And I just want to remind you,

  353. this is not really new thinking.

  354. If you know your Old Testament,

  355. there was a man named Job.

  356. Job was a very rich man.

  357. He was a very powerful man.

  358. He had pretty much everything he ever needed.

  359. He had houses and lands.

  360. I mean,

  361. he was probably the most wealthy man

  362. on the face of the earth.

  363. And yet,

  364. God allowed Satan to come

  365. and to touch those things

  366. and he lost all those things.

  367. And then Job had some really awesome,

  368. solid friends show up.

  369. And if you've read the book of Job,

  370. you know I'm being completely sarcastic.

  371. But I mean,

  372. I kind of understand

  373. where Job's friends were coming from.

  374. Because I mean,

  375. Job seemed to have everything

  376. and then like in a moment,

  377. everything was gone

  378. and they're there

  379. and they kind of feel bad for him

  380. and they're kind of,

  381. they don't know what to say.

  382. They're like,

  383. let's just sit here for a minute.

  384. Then they decide,

  385. you know what?

  386. Job,

  387. you're a bad dude.

  388. I mean,

  389. we've thought about it.

  390. We've prayed about it.

  391. And only bad things happen

  392. to bad people.

  393. And that was kind of their mindset.

  394. That Job's suffering

  395. was because he was

  396. an awful,

  397. wicked sinner

  398. who was just really good

  399. at hiding it.

  400. That was their mindset.

  401. And really,

  402. it's been that way

  403. for a long time.

  404. You go to John chapter 9.

    John 9 chapter mention

  405. The disciples,

  406. the apostles of Jesus,

  407. they're there

  408. and this blind man

  409. comes in

  410. and here's what

  411. the disciples ask.

  412. Why was this man,

  413. who sinned

  414. that this man

  415. was born blind?

  416. Was it his parents

  417. or was it him?

  418. Because when they looked

  419. at somebody that was maimed

  420. or somebody that had

  421. a deformity like that,

  422. the only option

  423. for that

  424. was they were sinners.

  425. That was the only option.

  426. And before we judge

  427. the Job's friends

  428. and before we judge

  429. the disciples,

  430. I submit to you

  431. that sometimes

  432. that mindset,

  433. it runs deep

  434. in our human nature.

  435. And honestly,

  436. here's why it does.

  437. It's an attractive way

  438. to think

  439. because it's neat

  440. and it's clean

  441. and it's self-satisfying

  442. because we can look

  443. at a situation

  444. and we can think

  445. because if tragedy

  446. only happens

  447. to bad people,

  448. I must be a good person then.

  449. That's kind of

  450. what we think.

  451. That's kind of

  452. how our mind works.

  453. In other words,

  454. here's what they're saying.

  455. They didn't have

  456. a legitimate question.

  457. They're saying,

  458. come on, Jesus,

  459. just tell us

  460. they did wrong

  461. so we feel better

  462. about ourselves.

  463. That's what's

  464. taking place here.

  465. That's kind of

  466. the mindset.

  467. But Jesus,

  468. He's just like

  469. my parents were.

  470. He just kind of

  471. ignored it

  472. and just went on.

  473. He just kind of

  474. He's not there

  475. to play their game

  476. and in fact,

  477. He brings up

  478. another tragedy.

  479. Verse number 14,

  480. verse number 4,

  481. excuse me,

  482. or those 18

  483. upon whom

  484. the Tower of Siloam

  485. fell and slew them.

  486. Think ye

  487. they were sinners

  488. above all men

  489. that dwelt in Jerusalem?

  490. See,

  491. many believe

  492. this Tower of Siloam

  493. would have stood

  494. near the wall

  495. of Jerusalem.

  496. Maybe when you read

  497. the Bible

  498. you heard of the

  499. Pool of Siloam.

  500. This would have been

  501. maybe what many

  502. historians believe

  503. is they were building

  504. one of the aqueducts

  505. to bring water in

  506. to have a better

  507. water source

  508. and what happens

  509. during this construction

  510. is it collapses

  511. and it kills

  512. 18 people.

  513. It was an absolute

  514. tragedy

  515. and here's why

  516. that matters.

  517. Here's why Jesus

  518. is bringing it up

  519. because the Galileans

  520. were kind of

  521. looked down upon.

  522. They were Jews

  523. but they were just

  524. Jews from the

  525. wrong side of the tracks.

  526. They were kind of

  527. the backwoods Jews.

  528. They were the

  529. redneck Jews.

  530. They weren't

  531. sophisticated

  532. Jerusalem Jews.

  533. So what they had

  534. going on for them

  535. is when they

  536. looked at them

  537. well the Galileans

  538. you know what

  539. they probably

  540. had that coming.

  541. If they would

  542. just learn

  543. to keep their

  544. mouth shut

  545. if they would

  546. just learn

  547. to not mess

  548. with Pilate

  549. they probably

  550. wouldn't have

  551. had that happen.

  552. But Jesus

  553. brings up a

  554. situation

  555. that nobody

  556. could say that

  557. about.

  558. This was

  559. random

  560. it was unexpected

  561. there was no

  562. explanation

  563. it was an

  564. accident.

  565. In Jesus

  566. he uses

  567. both examples

  568. to drive

  569. home the

  570. same point.

  571. He says

  572. there in

  573. verse number

  574. two

  575. suppose ye

  576. these Galileans

  577. were sinners

  578. above all

  579. the Galileans

  580. because they

  581. suffered such

  582. things and the

  583. crowd's thinking

  584. absolutely we

  585. do.

  586. That's a hundred

  587. percent what we

  588. think because that

  589. is what they

  590. thought.

  591. He says in

  592. verse number

  593. five verse

  594. number four

  595. think ye

  596. that they were

  597. sinners above all

  598. that dwelt in

  599. Jerusalem.

  600. And Jesus

  601. gives the same

  602. answer to both.

  603. He says I

  604. tell you I

  605. tell you this

  606. no.

  607. He said you're

  608. thinking about

  609. this wrong.

  610. You're assuming

  611. the wrong

  612. things.

  613. Now before we

  614. move on I

  615. don't want us

  616. to misunderstand

  617. this.

  618. Jesus is not

  619. saying that

  620. sin never

  621. brings

  622. consequences.

  623. Sin does

  624. bring consequences.

  625. We got to be

  626. careful because our

  627. sin will find us

  628. out.

  629. That everything

  630. we do is not

  631. hid from the

  632. Lord.

  633. But that's not

  634. the point of

  635. this text.

  636. Here's what he's

  637. doing.

  638. He's rejecting

  639. the idea that

  640. all tragedy is

  641. the result of

  642. us being

  643. sinners.

  644. That's what he's

  645. saying.

  646. Because that's

  647. how they

  648. thought.

  649. They thought

  650. well as long

  651. as I'm good

  652. and as long

  653. as nothing

  654. happens to me

  655. then I must

  656. be living

  657. okay.

  658. My life is

  659. good.

  660. My life is

  661. right before

  662. the Lord.

  663. But that's

  664. not the

  665. he's not

  666. he doesn't

  667. want us to

  668. miss this.

  669. His message is

  670. found in

  671. verse 3

  672. and verse 5

  673. he says

  674. this

  675. but except

  676. ye repent

  677. ye shall

  678. all likewise

  679. perish.

  680. Here's what

  681. Jesus is

  682. doing.

  683. He's not

  684. comparing

  685. sinners.

  686. Galileans

  687. versus

  688. Jerusalem

  689. people.

  690. You know

  691. higher society

  692. versus regular

  693. people.

  694. That's not

  695. what he's

  696. doing.

  697. No here's

  698. what he's

  699. doing.

  700. He's leveling

  701. the ground.

  702. He wants

  703. us all to

  704. understand this

  705. they were

  706. all sinners.

  707. That we

  708. all fall

  709. short of

  710. the glory

  711. of God.

  712. That we're

  713. all guilty.

  714. That we

  715. all deserve

  716. death.

  717. You think

  718. well I

  719. don't know

  720. if I

  721. like that

  722. message.

  723. It's the

  724. message.

  725. But God

  726. so loved

  727. the world

  728. that he

  729. gave his

  730. only begotten

  731. son.

  732. The wages

  733. of sin

  734. is death

  735. but the

  736. gift of

  737. God is

  738. eternal

  739. life.

  740. Listen

  741. tragedy

  742. is not

  743. proof of

  744. greater

  745. guilt.

  746. It's

  747. just a

  748. reminder

  749. that judgment

  750. is coming

  751. one day.

  752. I think

  753. we mentioned

  754. last week

  755. it's appointed

  756. a man

  757. once to

  758. die

  759. and after

  760. this the

  761. judgment.

  762. He's just

  763. saying listen

  764. sometimes life

  765. has tragedies.

  766. Sometimes there's

  767. unexplainable

  768. things as this

  769. tower falling

  770. or pilot

  771. kind of

  772. going off

  773. the rails.

  774. But instead

  775. of asking

  776. about it

  777. instead of

  778. thinking about it

  779. every time we

  780. hear about a

  781. tragedy

  782. an accident

  783. a sudden

  784. death

  785. an unexpected

  786. loss

  787. sometimes we

  788. try to

  789. explain it

  790. away.

  791. We try to

  792. figure out

  793. the issues

  794. of it

  795. instead of

  796. saying why

  797. did this

  798. happen to

  799. them

  800. we need

  801. to look

  802. at a text

  803. like that

  804. and say

  805. what does

  806. this mean

  807. for me?

  808. How can

  809. I apply

  810. this to

  811. my life?

  812. Because the

  813. truth is that

  814. you're not

  815. guaranteed

  816. tomorrow

  817. either.

  818. I mean

  819. it's not a

  820. popular thing

  821. to think

  822. about but

  823. it is the

  824. reality.

  825. I would

  826. imagine all

  827. of us in

  828. this room

  829. know somebody

  830. or know

  831. something very

  832. close where

  833. some tragic

  834. accident

  835. happened.

  836. And it

  837. was just

  838. they were

  839. here and

  840. they were

  841. gone.

  842. And we

  843. know that

  844. true but

  845. if we're

  846. honest we

  847. think well

  848. that will

  849. never happen

  850. to me

  851. until it

  852. does.

  853. And Jesus

  854. wants us to

  855. be mindful

  856. of that.

  857. Listen to

  858. this.

  859. The real

  860. question is

  861. not why

  862. do bad

  863. things happen

  864. to good

  865. people?

  866. I'm sure

  867. you've heard

  868. that all

  869. the time.

  870. Why do

  871. bad things

  872. happen to

  873. good people?

  874. No I

  875. think here's

  876. a better

  877. question.

  878. Why do

  879. good things

  880. happen to

  881. bad people?

  882. Because that's

  883. all of us.

  884. God loves

  885. us.

  886. I don't

  887. know.

  888. I think it

  889. means God

  890. loves us.

  891. That God is

  892. merciful and

  893. that he's

  894. gracious and

  895. that's the

  896. answer.

  897. Why do good

  898. things happen to

  899. bad people?

  900. Because he's

  901. gracious and he's

  902. merciful and he's

  903. patient with us.

  904. And the reason that

  905. matters so much in

  906. our life is

  907. sometimes we're

  908. carrying things that

  909. we are not intended

  910. to carry.

  911. we're carrying

  912. guilt and for

  913. things that you

  914. didn't cause.

  915. Sometimes a tragedy

  916. happens and you

  917. know what?

  918. We can't get

  919. past it.

  920. Sometimes parents

  921. live in blame

  922. their whole life

  923. because their

  924. child decided to

  925. make a choice and

  926. is living a

  927. prodigal style

  928. life.

  929. Families carry

  930. burdens they were

  931. never meant to

  932. carry.

  933. But Jesus is

  934. showing us here in

  935. this text that

  936. not all tragedy

  937. is a result of

  938. our sin.

  939. That death

  940. happens.

  941. Tragedies come to

  942. all and sometimes

  943. the unthinkable

  944. even comes to the

  945. most faithful

  946. people.

  947. Which means the

  948. issue is not

  949. why them.

  950. The issue is this.

  951. Are you ready?

  952. That's what Jesus

  953. is driving home.

  954. Because when these

  955. men went to build

  956. the Tower of

  957. Siloam, they

  958. didn't think when

  959. they got up that

  960. morning that was

  961. the last morning

  962. they were going

  963. to get up.

  964. Nobody thinks

  965. that.

  966. We see accents

  967. all the time on

  968. the highway.

  969. Nobody gets up

  970. and thinks that's

  971. going to be me

  972. today.

  973. I mean we just

  974. live life like we

  975. just have unlimited

  976. time.

  977. No, it's borrowed.

  978. We don't know how

  979. much time that we

  980. have.

  981. But why does Jesus

  982. dig so deep in on

  983. this idea?

  984. We've been talking

  985. about repentance for

  986. it seems weeks now.

  987. I think he does it

  988. because of this.

  989. Number two, life is

  990. limited so repentance

  991. is urgent.

  992. Life is limited so

  993. repentance is urgent.

  994. Notice what he said

  995. again in verse 3.

  996. But except ye

  997. repent, ye shall

  998. all likewise perish.

  999. This word except it

  1000. means unless this

  1001. happens, nothing else

  1002. matters.

  1003. That's what he's

  1004. bringing us to the

  1005. point.

1006. I mean you can live

1007. your life and do all

  1008. of these things but

  1009. except ye repent, it

  1010. doesn't matter what

  1011. you did.

  1012. This is the most

  1013. important decision that

  1014. you will ever make.

  1015. Here's what Jesus is

  1016. saying.

  1017. Repentance is not

  1018. optional.

1019. It's not when you get

1020. around to it and you

  1021. feel like it's a good

1022. idea and if it fits in

  1023. your schedule and it

  1024. kind of molds around

  1025. your lifestyle.

  1026. No, it's absolutely

  1027. necessary.

  1028. But notice what Jesus

  1029. doesn't say.

1030. He doesn't say all you

1031. need to do is just try a

  1032. little bit harder.

1033. He doesn't say you know

1034. what you need to do?

1035. You just need to be a

  1036. better person.

  1037. You know sometimes you

1038. ever wake up and say

1039. man today I'm just going

1040. to be a better person

1041. and then you get in

1042. your car and you start

  1043. yelling at people.

  1044. At least they don't

  1045. know.

  1046. You know that's just

  1047. between, isn't it super

1048. hard just to be a better

  1049. person sometimes?

  1050. Because even sometimes

  1051. on the outside you're

1052. trying to be a better

  1053. person, on the inside

  1054. you're like I want to

  1055. punch these people in

  1056. their face.

1057. So if I'm looking at

  1058. you weird when you're

1059. talking to me you just

  1060. think he probably wants

1061. to punch me in my face.

1062. I'm just trying to be

  1063. real.

  1064. If us getting to

  1065. heaven was based on

  1066. being a better person

1067. I'm not sure any of us

  1068. would make it.

  1069. Jesus doesn't say hey

  1070. here's what I need you

  1071. to do.

1072. Here's how you get to

  1073. heaven.

  1074. Clean up your life.

1075. Well I got to clean my

1076. life up a little bit

1077. before I come to Jesus

1078. before I come to church.

  1079. No, no.

1080. Here's what you got to

  1081. do.

  1082. Repent.

1083. You got to realize that

  1084. you're a sinner and God

1085. loves you and he saved

  1086. you.

  1087. That's where it starts.

  1088. He never says clean

  1089. yourself up.

1090. He says come unto me.

  1091. That's the goal.

  1092. That's the aim.

  1093. So here's the question.

1094. We talked a lot about it

  1095. but what is repentance?

1096. I just want to dig in

1097. real quick so we make

  1098. sure we understand.

  1099. Because I think repentance

  1100. is often misunderstood.

  1101. Sometimes people think

  1102. repentance is just

  1103. emotion.

  1104. It's crying and it's

  1105. feeling bad.

  1106. Listen, sometimes that

  1107. is that way.

  1108. But you know what?

  1109. Sometimes I cried and I

1110. was sad when I got caught

1111. growing up just because I

  1112. got caught.

  1113. I wasn't really

  1114. repentant.

  1115. I was just like my dad's

1116. going to kill me and I'm

  1117. probably going to die.

1118. I might as well cry about

  1119. it.

1120. But sometimes that's how we

  1121. treat repentance.

1122. We know it's wrong but we

  1123. actually enjoy it.

1124. We just want to say I'm

1125. sorry so we can just move

  1126. on past it.

  1127. Sometimes people view

  1128. repentance as a ritual.

  1129. It's something you go

  1130. through.

  1131. It's something you do.

  1132. That's not what repentance

  1133. is.

  1134. Repentance, true repentance,

  1135. true biblical repentance

1136. when Jesus says except you

  1137. repent, here's what it

  1138. means.

1139. It means you change your

  1140. mind about your sin.

  1141. That's the first step.

1142. You change your mind about

1143. your sin and then number

1144. two, you turn from your

  1145. sin to Jesus.

  1146. Basically you're going down

  1147. life, living life like

  1148. this, you realize that

  1149. you're a sinner that you

1150. sinned against God and you

1151. want to go towards him.

  1152. That's what repentance is.

1153. It's turning from your sin,

  1154. not just stop sinning,

1155. but stop sinning and turn

  1156. towards Christ.

  1157. That's the goal.

  1158. That's the aim.

  1159. And here's the reminder.

  1160. It's not a temporary change

  1161. or a quick fix.

  1162. You know what?

  1163. I mean, we'll give an

  1164. example.

1165. How many of you have

1166. ever been to the dentist?

1167. Yeah, we got some dental

1168. hygienists in here and stuff.

1169. You know how good I brush my

1170. teeth the week I'm going to

  1171. the dentist?

  1172. Like I'm supposed to.

1173. And then when, you know

1174. how much I, you know when I

  1175. floss the day before?

  1176. Because they're going to

1177. say, do you floss them?

  1178. I'm like, absolutely I floss.

1179. Don't listen to that, Miss

  1180. Jordan.

1181. Because she asked me that.

1182. I'm like, is that not how

  1183. we operate?

  1184. Yeah.

1185. But that's sometimes how we

  1186. view repentance.

1187. We do something, we feel like,

1188. man, I need to get ahead of

1189. this before this train comes

1190. down the track and the Lord

  1191. just smashes me.

1192. Listen, God's not trying to do

  1193. that.

  1194. That's not what he's, that's

  1195. not the goal.

1196. He's not up here to make our

  1197. life miserable.

1198. You know why he wants us to

1199. live in a state of repentance?

1200. So we can have a relationship

  1201. with him.

1202. Because he loves us and he

1203. cares for us and he wants the

  1204. best for us.

1205. He's giving all of his thoughts

1206. towards us and sometimes we're

1207. just not going that way.

  1208. See, it's not a quick fix.

  1209. It's not a temporary change.

1210. It's a change of mind that leads

1211. to a change of life.

1212. And it affects how you think and

  1213. how you live.

1214. Not one day, not one week, but for

1215. the rest of your life.

1216. Does that mean we're perfect?

  1217. No.

1218. No, we can, we can know that

  1219. we're saved.

1220. We can know we're on the way to

1221. heaven and we can have repented

1222. of our sins one time.

1223. Salvation is a one time thing.

1224. Let's just make sure we

  1225. understand that.

1226. You don't have to get saved over

1227. and over again, but we still

1228. sin and we have to repent and

1229. ask the Lord for forgiveness.

1230. First John 1, 9, if we repent of

1231. our sins, he is faithful and just

  1232. to forgive us.

1233. It's about fellowship with God.

  1234. That's what it's about.

1235. You say, well, preacher, why

  1236. should I repent?

1237. Because Jesus shows us in these

1238. verses, it's because judgment is

  1239. certain.

1240. He says, except ye repent, notice

1241. what he said, ye shall all

  1242. likewise perish.

1243. Not might, not maybe, we will.

1244. That's the reality of it.

1245. We don't like to talk about it, but

1246. every person will face death and

1247. after that, they'll face God.

1248. But here's the beautiful thing.

1249. If you know Christ is your

1250. Savior, you don't have to fear

  1251. that.

1252. I'm ready to see the Lord face to

  1253. face.

1254. Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus.

1255. I want to see my Savior.

1256. I want to be there.

1257. I don't want to have to deal with

  1258. sin anymore.

1259. I want to live in a place of a

  1260. perfect relationship with Jesus

  1261. Christ.

  1262. And Jesus knows this.

1263. He knows that death is coming.

1264. He knows judgment is certain.

1265. And he's telling us this because

  1266. he loves us.

1267. This is not a, oh man, the

1268. preacher's mad and Jesus is mad.

1269. I'm thankful Jesus tells us the

  1270. truth.

1271. That we don't live through life

  1272. thinking we're all good.

1273. And then judgment comes and we

1274. think, wish somebody would have

  1275. told me about this.

1276. You ever had one of those things

  1277. at work?

1278. You think, I wish somebody had

  1279. told me about this.

  1280. I'm completely unprepared.

1281. I look silly up here.

1282. Listen, that's not how Jesus

  1283. operates.

1284. And he's confronting this, this

1285. illusion of time that we think

  1286. that we have.

1287. In fact, he's just lovingly

1288. reminding us, time is no, we have

  1289. no guarantee of it.

1290. And we have no guarantee that we

  1291. have more time later.

1292. So what he's saying is, is we must

1293. make sure we are right with him

  1294. right now.

1295. That we, we don't leave these,

1296. this, this auditorium this morning

1297. thinking, I'll deal with that later.

1298. See, the greatest tragedy is not

  1299. how you die.

1300. That's what the Jews thought.

  1301. Like, I can't believe they got

  1302. slaughtered in the temple.

1303. I can't believe, man, they got to

1304. be really bad if a tower fell on

  1305. them.

  1306. I mean, I mean, towers just don't

1307. fall on people unless you're bad

  1308. people.

1309. That's what they were thinking.

1310. Jesus says, no, actually the worst

1311. way to die is without repentance.

1312. That's where you don't want to find

  1313. yourself.

  1314. Like, a tower's not great.

1315. But a repent, without repentance,

  1316. has eternal consequences.

1317. And that's what Jesus is teaching.

1318. And before we move on, I just want

1319. to, I want to make it real in our

1320. lives real quick and just ask

1321. yourself, is there something God has

1322. shown you that you've been putting

  1323. off?

1324. Maybe there's a sin in your life.

1325. And he says, get rid of that.

  1326. Stop doing that.

1327. And we keep saying, well, it's not

  1328. that bad.

1329. I'll deal with it later.

1330. Like, you know, I'll deal with it.

1331. And then it, Lord, just let me be.

1332. Maybe it's a step of obedience that

  1333. we're delaying.

1334. He's calling you out to do

  1335. something.

1336. Maybe to take a stand at school and

1337. share the gospel with your friends,

1338. to take a stand at work.

1339. Listen, peer pressure is not just only

  1340. for teenagers.

1341. Sometimes we're not willing to do what

1342. we should at work because we're

  1343. afraid.

1344. Maybe God is leading us to that step

  1345. of obedience.

  1346. Maybe it's just, maybe you're coming

1347. to this realization, I've never

1348. really repented of my sins.

1349. You just need to trust Christ today

  1350. for salvation.

1351. Listen, if you keep saying later,

1352. later becomes into not at all, and

1353. the urgency fades, and you find

1354. yourself maybe one day thinking,

  1355. it's too late.

1356. So what are you putting off

  1357. spiritually right now?

1358. Because whatever it is, I think this,

1359. it's probably more urgent than you

  1360. think it is.

1361. Because we don't know how much time

  1362. we have.

  1363. It's borrowed time.

  1364. So life is limited.

  1365. Repentance is urgent.

1366. So why hasn't judgment come?

1367. That's what the world says.

  1368. Well, where is he?

1369. You always talk about Jesus coming

  1370. back.

  1371. Where is he?

1372. Well, I love this third point.

1373. God is patient, but time is running

  1374. out.

1375. Peter tells us in the book of 1 Peter

1376. that God is not slack concerning his

1377. promises, as some men count slackness.

1378. He's not lazy, but he's rather that all

  1379. should come to repentance.

  1380. No, God is patient.

1381. And to close out his sermon, Jesus uses

1382. a parable to illustrate this truth.

1383. He introduces us to a man that planted

1384. a fig tree in his vineyard, and he came

1385. looking for fruit, and he found none.

1386. And I think we would understand the

  1387. frustration there.

1388. Some of you want to be gardeners.

1389. And you go out to your garden, you're

1390. thinking, why is nothing growing?

1391. All I grow is leaves.

1392. It's just green all the time.

  1393. And you know what?

1394. And you think, you know what I'm going

  1395. to do?

1396. I'm going to tear this up and throw it

1397. away and plant something new.

  1398. That makes sense.

  1399. You spent money.

  1400. You cultivate the ground.

  1401. You fertilize it.

1402. You do all of these things.

  1403. Why?

1404. Because the idea is it bears fruit.

  1405. That is the goal.

1406. And this tree that we're introduced to

1407. in verse number six had everything it

  1408. needed to bear fruit.

  1409. It had been planted.

1410. It had been cared for.

1411. It had been watered over and over and

  1412. over.

1413. It had been fertilized for years and

  1414. absolutely nothing.

  1415. What a one-time thing.

1416. Because some people have the idea that

1417. God is just going to, he gave you one

1418. chance and then you're done.

  1419. No, three years.

1420. That's what the Bible says in verse

  1421. number seven.

1422. Then he said he unto the dresser of

1423. the vineyard, behold, these three years

1424. I come of this fig tree and find none.

1425. There was no growth, no fruit, no change.

1426. Notice what he says at the end of the

  1427. verse.

1428. He said, cut it down.

1429. Why cumbereth it the ground?

1430. He said, why is this tree taking up all

1431. this space in my vineyard and not doing

1432. its one job producing fruit?

  1433. That's what he's saying.

1434. And if we're looking at this strictly

  1435. from a farming perspective, from a

1436. vineyard dresser, that is a perfectly

  1437. reasonable suggestion.

  1438. Cut it down.

  1439. It's not worth anything.

  1440. They're reasonable.

1441. The tree was planted in good soil.

  1442. It was given space.

  1443. It was given sunlight.

1444. It's drawing nutrients from the ground

  1445. and it's producing nothing.

1446. It was using resources without

  1447. fulfilling its purpose.

1448. And the guys, the vineyard dresser

1449. says this, the owner says, it must go.

1450. But I love verse number eight.

1451. And he answering said unto him, Lord,

1452. let it alone this year also till I shall

1453. dig about it and dung it.

  1454. The caretaker speaks up.

1455. Let's just give it, let's give it one

  1456. more year.

1457. Look, I'm going to put some extra work

  1458. in it here.

1459. I'm going to put some people around

1460. this tree that really know what

  1461. they're doing.

1462. I'm going to call a tree specialist.

1463. I'm going to come and have the soil

1464. tested and I'm going to dig around

  1465. it.

1466. I'm going to make sure it's got

  1467. everything that it needs.

1468. I'm going to fertilize it.

1469. Let's just give it a little more

  1470. time.

1471. You know what that is?

  1472. Astonishing mercy.

  1473. That's what that is.

  1474. See, don't miss this.

1475. The owner represents the justice of

  1476. God.

  1477. God is just.

1478. And he will exact justice.

  1479. Perfect justice.

1480. Everything he does is perfect.

1481. But the caretaker, it represents the

  1482. mercy of Jesus Christ.

1483. Because God says, hey, this tree is not

  1484. doing anything.

1485. Let's get rid of it.

1486. And Jesus says, let's just give it a

  1487. little more time.

1488. Let me just, I'm going to send some

1489. people in his life and they're going

1490. to love on him and they're going to

  1491. share the gospel.

1492. Let's just give him a little more time.

1493. See, justice says, cut it down.

1494. And mercy says, give it more time.

1495. See, the Lord is merciful to give us

  1496. time to respond.

1497. How does God work in that time?

1498. He digs around the roots.

  1499. He fertilizes.

1500. He brings the word into your life.

1501. Maybe he's brought people into your

  1502. life.

1503. You know what they're doing?

  1504. They're just loving you.

  1505. They're sharing the gospel.

1506. He sends the spirit to stir your

  1507. heart.

1508. Maybe it's right now the Holy Spirit

1509. saying, that's exactly what you need.

1510. And he reminds you of sin, not to make

1511. you feel terrible, but to realize

  1512. there's a debt to be paid.

1513. But here's the great news.

1514. He already paid the debt.

1515. And he presses that conviction on your

  1516. soul.

1517. And moment after moment, month after

1518. month, God is working to produce fruit

  1519. in your life.

  1520. He loves you.

  1521. He cares for you.

  1522. But here's the reality.

1523. There is a time limit.

  1524. Verse 9.

1525. And if it bear fruit, we're good to go.

1526. But notice what he says.

1527. And if not, then after that, thou shalt cut

  1528. it down.

1529. He's not being mean here.

1530. He's just speaking to the reality that at

1531. some point time will run out.

1532. Some people live a few years.

1533. Some people live 100 years.

1534. But the opportunity is not going to last

  1535. forever.

  1536. See, God's patience.

1537. Get a hold of this.

1538. God's patience is not permission to keep

  1539. hitting the snooze button.

  1540. Whether it's salvation, whether it's

  1541. obedience, whether it's service.

1542. It's not a good time right now.

  1543. I'm busy.

1544. I got kids at home.

1545. And when I get out and we just keep it

  1546. and snooze.

  1547. Keep it and snooze.

  1548. No, here's what God's patience is.

1549. It's an opportunity to repent.

  1550. That's what it is.

1551. But what can we take home with us?

1552. I think we can take this.

1553. That every day that you wake up,

1554. every breath that you take,

1555. every moment that you have,

  1556. here's what it is.

  1557. Borrowed time.

  1558. That's what it is.

1559. Everybody in this room, we're living on

  1560. borrowed time.

  1561. So ask yourself,

  1562. am I bearing fruit?

1563. Or am I just taking up space?

  1564. Am I growing spiritually?

1565. Or am I just coasting?

1566. Am I responding to God?

  1567. Or ignoring Him?

  1568. Snoozing Him?

1569. Listen, do not waste the borrowed time

1570. that God is giving you to respond.

  1571. The time is now.

1572. We don't know the rest of this day.

  1573. We know this.

1574. We have this time right here.

1575. Would the Lord help us to respond

1576. however He spoke to our hearts?

1577. With our heads bowed and our eyes closed,

  1578. why don't we stand

1579. and get ready for this time of invitation?

1580. If you're here, you say,

1581. Preacher, I know the Lord is my Savior.

1582. I put my faith and trust

1583. in what Jesus Christ did on the cross of Calvary.

1584. Let me ask you this.

1585. Is your life bearing fruit?

1586. That's what Jesus intends for us to do.

  1587. Bearing fruit looks like

  1588. living a Christ-like life.

  1589. Loving God.

  1590. Loving others.

  1591. Sharing the gospel.

  1592. Leading your children

1593. and the nurture and the admonition of the Lord.

1594. Being a witness wherever God places you.

1595. He's not calling you to be perfect,

1596. but He is calling you to make a difference.

1597. People can see the fruit of your life.

1598. They can see your good works

1599. and want some of that.

1600. And glorify your Father which is in heaven.

  1601. That's the goal,

1602. that we're to let our light so shine.

1603. He's not looking for perfection,

1604. but He is looking for progress.

  1605. Is your life changed

  1606. and continuing to change?

  1607. That's a sign that you

  1608. are in the family.

  1609. That God is working.

  1610. Because real repentance

  1611. produces real fruit.

1612. Maybe you're here and you

1613. try to turn over a new leaf.

1614. You're trying to be a good person.

1615. You're trying to do the right thing.

1616. Listen, there's nothing wrong with that.

1617. But the most important decision

  1618. you'll ever make is

1619. do you know Jesus Christ

  1620. as your Savior?

1621. Because the only reason you're here,

1622. the only reason I'm here

1623. is the mercy of God.

1624. And the only reason you still have time

1625. is the grace of God.

1626. But do not presume on that grace.

1627. God is looking for fruit.

1628. And here's the beautiful thing.

  1629. Jesus made a way.

1630. That's what the cross of Calvary is about.

  1631. We're all sinners.

1632. But we must all come to that realization

1633. that it was my sin

1634. that put Him on that cross.

1635. That that should have been my cross.

1636. And He died the death

1637. that I should have died.

1638. And He paid a debt

1639. that I should have paid.

  1640. And He was buried

  1641. and He rose again

1642. so that I might have life

1643. and I might have it eternally.

  1644. I might have a purpose

1645. in my life here today.

1646. Don't put it off any longer.

1647. You may not feel comfortable

  1648. coming down here

  1649. at this invitation time.

1650. Nobody's going to be looking around.

  1651. Brother Garrett's down here.

  1652. My wife's down here.

  1653. I'm down here.

1654. I'd love to show you

1655. from the Word of God.

  1656. After church, you say,

1657. Preacher, I've got some questions about that.

1658. I'll sit down with you.

  1659. Let's talk about it.

1660. Because that is the most important thing

1661. that you can ever do

1662. is trust Jesus Christ as your Savior.

1663. Whether you know Him or you don't,

1664. don't assume you have more time.

1665. Don't delay what God is doing in your heart.

  1666. Come today.

1667. Father, thank You for this time.
