  1. The Bible is 1 Peter chapter number 1. You can remain standing and we'll read the word of God together.

  2. ! It's a beautiful day today, isn't it? Beautiful sunshine. I'm thankful for that.

  3. Thankful to be back in the Lord's house tonight. I enjoyed the services this morning.

  4. I was going to do this this morning, but I chickened out, so I'm going to go ahead and do it tonight.

  5. When you see Miss Bobbie on the way out, she's 19 today.

  6. 19 years young. I could have reversed the numbers there, but we're just going to go with 19.

  7. 19, and I'm so thankful for Miss Bobbie. I know she doesn't like me doing that, but I'm thankful for her faithfulness.

  8. And when she's not in her spot right here, I'm like, where's Miss Bobbie?

  9. Because as long as I've been here for almost nine years, she's been right there faithfully supporting the work here at Central Baptist.

  10. So make sure you tell her happy birthday. Please don't kill me later, Miss Bobbie. I love you.

  11. Her daughter tried to get me to do it this morning. I'm like, I didn't feel the spirit.

  12. I was actually just scared of Miss Bobbie, so I still am, but we love her anyways, and I'm thankful for that.

  13. But if you found your place there in 1 Peter 1, we're going to be looking at verses 6-9,

  14. but we're just going to go ahead and read the prior verses as well, because it's kind of all going together,

  15. but just to give us some context, and then we'll jump right in.

  16. Our series we've entitled Living Hope.

  17. That's really what this whole book is about, that Peter is trying to relay that we have hope in a broken world.

  18. He's writing to a people that are struggling, and life is difficult, and the government's against them,

  19. and Christianity has a target on their back, and Peter reminds them, listen, trials in your life are real,

  20. but the hope that you have is even more real than that, and it's something that's going to sustain you,

  21. not just here, but in the future to come as well.

  22. So that's kind of the thought behind this little letter that Peter wrote.

  23. You found your place there in verse 1.

  24. We begin reading where the Bible says,

  25. We talked about that verse last week, that there's coming a day that we're going to see Christ face to face,

  26. and we experience a lot of blessings here, but what a day that will be when we see Him.

  27. We see Him as He is, and we shall be like Him.

  28. And Peter says, because of all of this, because of the fact that Christ is alive,

  29. and we have this inheritance that the world can't touch, that is reserved for us in heaven,

  30. we are kept by the power of God, wherein ye greatly rejoice.

  31. Then he introduces this,

  32. Though now for a season, if need be, you are in heaviness through manifold temptations,

  33. that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than that of gold that perisheth,

  34. though it be tried with fire, might be found in the praise and the honor and the glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ,

  35. whom having not seen, ye love, and whom though ye now see Him not, yet believing,

  36. ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

  37. Really tonight, we want to look at this thought, that there is real hope for real life.

  38. That trials, he's kind of introduced some really encouraging things,

  39. and tonight we're going to look at the idea of trials.

  40. But Peter's saying, listen, don't let that get you down,

  41. because even in that, even when you walk through the fire, there's hope to be found.

  42. So let's ask the Lord to bless our time together before we get going.

  43. Father, thank you for this time, thank you for the songs,

  44. and the truth that we've already sung, both this morning and here this evening.

  45. Lord, I thank you for this great group of people that have come out tonight as we open up your word,

  46. and I pray that it would be profitable for us, that we would take something,

  47. we would be encouraged, we would have a truth that we can apply to our life,

  48. in our home, and at our workplace, and in our schools tomorrow.

  49. Lord, help us to live it out, what you have,

  50. and we're thankful for the hope that you give us in Christ,

  51. and we ask it in his name. Amen.

  52. Thank you for standing. May you be seated.

  53. Basically, when I was in middle school, I lived at the vending machine.

  54. Yeah, I mean, I had a very healthy diet.

  55. But my favorite thing was Miss Baird's, I bet they still have them,

  56. I've tried to stay away from them,

  57. but Miss Baird's had like this long rectangular cinnamon roll thing.

  58. You know what I'm talking about?

  59. Oh, man. And it was awesome.

  60. And like on the sides of it, it had like this little paper thing,

  61. but you knew you got a good cinnamon roll when you open it up,

  62. and the paper was just covered in icing.

  63. I mean, that was like you knew you were having a good day at school.

  64. You know, a cinnamon roll and a surge.

  65. I mean, just what every middle schooler needs there.

  66. And, you know, I remember a few times going up there to get my well-balanced lunch,

  67. and I walk up there, my money's ready, I can taste the cinnamon roll already,

  68. and I get up there, and there's a sign that says,

  69. Out of order.

  70. Don't you hate that?

  71. Maybe you've had to be like, you're visiting in a hospital,

  72. you're there for a long time, you're like,

  73. man, I just need something to tide me over.

  74. You go down there, it's out of order.

  75. Every time I want to go somewhere, you try to go to McDonald's,

  76. they're like, we're sorry, the ice cream machine's broken.

  77. It's just what it is.

  78. There's just certain places, that's just how it goes.

  79. And you're kind of frustrated by it.

  80. But isn't that how life feels sometimes?

  81. I think as we can be honest here tonight,

  82. and that's what Peter's going to kind of remind us,

  83. that, you know, many times we're here on a Sunday night.

  84. I mean, we're trying to do our best,

  85. we're trying to live for the Lord,

  86. we're trying to apply the truths that we find in the Word of God,

  87. we're trying to be good Christian people,

  88. we maybe had some difficulty throughout the week,

  89. but, you know, we're hanging on,

  90. and we're trying to trust God,

  91. and then all of a sudden that sickness hits.

  92. That relationship that we've been praying about,

  93. it just seems to be deteriorating around us.

  94. The job that we were so excited about,

  95. it seems so promising,

  96. now it's just a drudge,

  97. and it seems like it's just a complete dead end,

  98. and that burden shows up that you never saw coming.

  99. And it's almost like life just kind of slapped a

  100. out of order sign on your hope,

  101. and on all the things you were kind of trusting in.

  102. But Peter comes here,

  103. and he's kind of been building up to this point,

  104. and reminding us of some great truths,

  105. but he said, listen, I want you to know this,

  106. that God's hope never is out of order.

  107. That God's hope is never out of service.

  108. And that's why he wrote this book.

  109. Because life has a way of reminding us

  110. how badly we need hope.

  111. You're going to need it this week,

  112. and I mean, you probably said things like,

  113. I hope this week, fill in the blank.

  114. You know, we're just dreading certain things,

  115. but it doesn't have to be that way.

  116. We don't have to walk through a trial and think,

  117. this is the worst thing that's ever happened to me.

  118. Because Peter's going to remind us,

  119. sometimes it's the best thing that's ever happened to you.

  120. That God is going to use it in a great way.

  121. And before Peter really ever talks about these trials,

  122. and before he ever really introduced these great things

  123. about our lively hope,

  124. I want us to be reminded what he says

  125. in the very first verse.

  126. Peter, as we kind of talked about this morning,

  127. an apostle of Jesus Christ.

  128. Sometimes we do blow through the introductions.

  129. We think, okay, there's a bunch of names,

  130. and Peter's this.

  131. But this is an important thought.

  132. Because this is the same Peter

  133. who was once a kind of a rough fisherman.

  134. I mean, Peter's so impetuous.

  135. Peter's the one we relate to

  136. of probably all the disciples

  137. because he opens his mouth

  138. and just inserts his foot constantly.

  139. This wasn't maybe the one they would have said,

  140. you know who's going to be a great teacher

  141. and bring hope?

  142. Peter.

  143. Everybody's like, Peter?

  144. Like, I think Peter may be most likely

  145. to not do these things.

  146. He was impulsive in his decisions.

  147. He was this sword-swinging follower

  148. who promised to go to the death for Christ.

  149. And yet so boldly and publicly

  150. denied ever knowing him.

  151. And it's this man,

  152. this apostle,

  153. this chosen man by God

  154. who is writing a letter

  155. to give hope to these hurting believers.

  156. You know what it really just reminds us?

  157. That's how grace works.

  158. That God doesn't define us by our past,

  159. by our decisions,

  160. by our failures.

  161. No, this is a man who sat there in John 21,

  162. we're going to look at it a couple times here tonight,

  163. and was dejected,

  164. and thought,

  165. God can never use me.

  166. And yet Jesus shows up and says,

  167. Peter, I got one question for you.

  168. Do you love me?

  169. Yes, Lord, you know I love you.

  170. Now he was on a different level.

  171. Brother Garrett did a great job

  172. preaching that a few weeks back,

  173. but he was getting into this point,

  174. like, listen, Peter,

  175. there's still hope.

  176. I'm here.

  177. I'm alive.

  178. I know you made some mistakes a few days ago,

  179. but hey, we can get past this.

  180. Hey, I got a job for you to do,

  181. because when I restore you,

  182. you're going to make a big difference.

  183. And here we are tonight,

  184. studying the book of 1 Peter,

  185. written by a man that God used,

  186. and he grew in a great way.

  187. Because Peter knew what it felt like to be a failure.

  188. He knew what it was like to watch hope die on a cross.

  189. And everything that he had given his life for,

  190. it seemed like,

  191. well, I don't know if that was worth it.

  192. But this was also the same man,

  193. as we mentioned last week,

  194. that ran to the tomb with John,

  195. and found out that hope is alive.

  196. And then he showed up to him in the upper room there,

  197. and over the last few weeks,

  198. Peter has been reminding us that,

  199. yes, life is hard.

  200. We're strangers in a difficult world.

  201. This world is not our home.

  202. But we have hope in who we are.

  203. And that's what verse number three especially tells us,

  204. that we are,

  205. I mean, excuse me,

  206. verse number two,

  207. that if we are children of God,

  208. we have been chosen by the Father.

  209. We are being sanctified,

  210. that Christ is doing a work,

  211. a transforming work in our life,

  212. and we're covered by the blood of Christ.

  213. Last week we looked at this,

  214. not only do we have hope in who we are,

  215. we have hope in what we have.

  216. That we have this living hope.

  217. I'm thankful the hope that God gives us

  218. is not like the weather report.

  219. It's not like the things in life

  220. where we're just kind of a wishy-washy,

  221. we're not really sure what's going to happen,

  222. I hope this and I hope that.

  223. No, no, it's a rock-solid evidence.

  224. The tomb is still empty.

  225. That is where our hope is found.

  226. And because of that,

  227. all of the things that Jesus has promised,

  228. it's secure.

  229. Because when Jesus Christ resurrected from the dead,

  230. every promise he said,

  231. I mean, he put a stamp that it's going to happen.

  232. And we have an inheritance that's secure.

  233. Not where moth and rust does corrupt

  234. and thieves break through and steal,

  235. as Jesus tells us.

  236. No, it's in heaven.

  237. Again, that we're not living for this world,

  238. we're living for that time that we are with him

  239. and we are kept by God's power.

  240. And he kind of wrapped that up

  241. in the beginning part of verse 6.

  242. We looked a little bit last week.

  243. He said, because of all of this, rejoice.

  244. Hey, be thankful.

  245. Be excited that you have all of these things here.

  246. That phrase, greatly rejoices,

  247. it means overflowing,

  248. expressive, outward joy.

  249. Joy.

  250. Listen, it's okay.

  251. I know we're Baptists,

  252. but it's okay to be excited about the things of God.

  253. I mean, we get excited about football

  254. and we're yelling.

  255. You know, when my team just goes to touch it,

  256. I'm like...

  257. No, I'm sure...

  258. I mean, if you live close enough to me,

  259. you're like, what is going on in that house?

  260. Because sometimes I'm not in the house.

  261. I'm running around the street.

  262. You know, I'm like, let's go!

  263. When's the last time you were actually

  264. just a little bit excited about the hope

  265. that you have in Christ?

  266. Because guess what?

  267. Your football team, just like mine,

  268. and we're not going to get into that,

  269. is going to let you down.

  270. That hope is not going to sustain you.

  271. It's going to fall flat on its face,

  272. but that's not the hope that God offers.

  273. He offers something real and lasting and eternal

  274. that's going to carry us all the way through to the end.

  275. But then there's kind of this change in the tone

  276. in verse number six.

  277. He says this,

  278. Though now.

  279. And I think when you read that,

  280. it kind of introduces this tension to it.

  281. Because really up to this point,

  282. you're like, man, Peter,

  283. this is what I'm talking about.

  284. I'm excited and no doubt

  285. as they would have received this letter

  286. and these different areas in the churches of Galatia,

  287. they needed that encouragement.

  288. But they also need to be reminded

  289. that what they're going through is not abnormal.

  290. That life is hard.

  291. And that's why sometimes, you know,

  292. I love to preach these kind of

  293. rah-rah, uplifting messages

  294. and really kind of just be thankful.

  295. But sometimes we just need to be reminded

  296. that life is hard.

  297. And that it's going to be difficult.

  298. And maybe last week was difficult.

  299. Maybe this upcoming week,

  300. there's things that are coming.

  301. But it's going to be okay.

  302. That's kind of what Peter's saying here.

  303. And instead of weakening our hope,

  304. Peter shows us how trials

  305. actually can deepen our hope.

  306. Because if hope is real,

  307. and I think we've tried to lay it out clearly,

  308. it is,

  309. then it must be strong enough

  310. to hold us in the middle of a difficulty.

  311. So Peter begins reminding us

  312. of a hard truth that we all face.

  313. It's this, that trials and temptations

  314. are a fact of the Christian life.

  315. You know, when we see Peter introduce this

  316. in verse number six,

  317. though now for a season,

  318. if need be,

  319. you are in heaviness

  320. through manifold temptations.

  321. See, Peter's not one

  322. to sugarcoat the Christian life.

  323. He's lived it.

  324. He understands it.

  325. He's lived through some difficulties.

  326. I mean, read the book of Acts.

  327. The church was growing like crazy,

  328. but life wasn't easy.

  329. You know what they were facing?

  330. Hey, you know what we should do?

  331. Arrest Peter.

  332. You know what we should do?

  333. Cut James' head off.

  334. It wasn't like everything was going well.

  335. God was still working,

  336. but life was still hard.

  337. And Peter's reminding these believers

  338. of that same truth.

  339. that sometimes we can get in our mind,

  340. well, I love the Lord,

  341. so this shouldn't be happening to me.

  342. But I'm thankful,

  343. and I know that you would be as well,

  344. that you don't want a doctor

  345. who minimizes your diagnosis.

  346. You don't want something

  347. to be terribly wrong,

  348. something that needs to be addressed,

  349. and they say, hey, you're good.

  350. See you next year.

  351. That would do nothing for you.

  352. In fact, that would be very hurtful.

  353. It could be fatal in some cases.

  354. And God's word is the same way.

  355. It doesn't just sugarcoat it.

  356. It tells us life's hard,

  357. but great news,

  358. there's a way to get through it.

  359. There's some patterns that we can follow.

  360. We say it often.

  361. Jesus told Peter this.

  362. Here's where he's hearing it.

  363. From the lips of Jesus himself.

  364. There in the upper room

  365. as Jesus is in the shadow of the cross,

  366. and they're all reeling.

  367. He said, listen, guys.

  368. In this world,

  369. you're going to have tribulation.

  370. You're going to have problems.

  371. You're going to have trials.

  372. But before he died and rose again,

  373. he said this,

  374. be of good cheer.

  375. I have overcome the world.

  376. Because it's a settled reality,

  377. and that's what our hope is.

  378. So here in these few verses

  379. we're going to look at tonight,

  380. Peter teaches us a few things about trials.

  381. Number one, we see this.

  382. He uses this word in verse number six.

  383. You are in heaviness

  384. through manifold temptation.

  385. What does that mean?

  386. That's not a word that we probably use all the time.

  387. In this context, in this idea,

  388. it has the thought of many colors.

  389. And so really what Peter is saying,

  390. in other words,

  391. trials don't look all the same.

  392. You're not going to face one type of trial.

  393. I wish it was like,

  394. do one trial,

  395. and then you're done with all the trials in your life.

  396. Am I the only one that wants trials like that?

  397. You know, sometimes we get through a trial,

  398. we're like, man, thank the Lord that one's over.

  399. And it's like, oh wow, a new one.

  400. And it looks different.

  401. And sometimes it's a health issue,

  402. it's a financial pressure,

  403. it's a family strain,

  404. it's persecution,

  405. it's disappointment,

  406. it's loss,

  407. it's frustration.

  408. I mean, we go on and on and on.

  409. But the idea is,

  410. we're going to face a lot of things in our life.

  411. And they're going to be here.

  412. And he goes on to say that,

  413. not only are there a lot of different kinds,

  414. but he tells us this,

  415. number two,

  416. trials bring happiness.

  417. See, Peter doesn't deny the emotional weight

  418. that this life has on us.

  419. Christian people hurt.

  420. Christian people weep.

  421. Christian people feel the ache of brokenness.

  422. We don't have to put a fake smile on

  423. and act like that's not true in our life.

  424. Because sometimes it is.

  425. I just think when we're here on Wednesday nights

  426. and we're going through the prayer list,

  427. sometimes it just hurts my heart.

  428. The things that our friends and our family

  429. and coworkers

  430. and many people that we know

  431. are going through.

  432. And it's just,

  433. it reminds us that we live in a broken world.

  434. That we live in a world

  435. that's going to bring this heaviness to us.

  436. I'm wearing this little thing

  437. because the girl that we're praying for

  438. there in Lindsay,

  439. the senior, Molly,

  440. she got cancer.

  441. And when I look at this,

  442. it just reminds me to pray for her.

  443. Because what if that was my daughter?

  444. What if that was your family?

  445. And some of your family is on that list

  446. and some of you are on that list

  447. and we're praying for you.

  448. And it just reminds us that

  449. we're not here to sugarcoat life

  450. and we don't have to smile all the time

  451. and say, well, I'm a Christian

  452. so everything's perfect.

  453. That's not always the truth.

  454. That we are Christians

  455. and it's not perfect,

  456. but we have a hope.

  457. This trial is not everlasting.

  458. See, joy, we think,

  459. well, if this trial would just leave

  460. and this issue would just leave,

  461. then I could be happy.

  462. Listen, joy does not mean

  463. the absence of heaviness.

  464. That Jesus gives that joy

  465. no matter the circumstances.

  466. When he's talking there

  467. in the Sermon on the Mount,

  468. that blessedness is a joy

  469. when he's like,

  470. blessed are they, blessed are they.

  471. Here's what he's saying.

  472. There is joy in spite of your circumstances.

  473. That it goes beyond the circumstances of life

  474. and it is a deep and it's abiding joy

  475. because it's found in Christ.

  476. That's what John 15 tells us as well.

  477. See, what it does is,

  478. yes, they're manifold

  479. and they're heavy on our life,

  480. but hope still exists

  481. beneath the weight of all of it.

  482. We've already seen right here

  483. that we can still have joy unspeakable

  484. and full of glory.

  485. Because I've seen people walk through

  486. some really heavy trials

  487. with a smile on their face.

  488. How's that possible?

  489. Here's how it's possible.

  490. Jesus is alive.

  491. There's a hope that is real.

  492. Now, here's one that we will like.

  493. Number three,

  494. trials are seasonal.

  495. I like that.

  496. You say, well, preacher,

  497. I have a chronic situation.

  498. It's still seasonal.

  499. It may be chronic for the duration

  500. on this side,

  501. on this earth,

  502. but it's still seasonal.

  503. Because there is coming a day

  504. when you read Revelation 21

  505. that he's going to wipe every tear

  506. and every hurt

  507. and every grief

  508. and every pain

  509. and he's going to make

  510. all things new.

  511. That's not something

  512. to make us feel better.

  513. It's a promise

  514. from the word of God

  515. that we can take to the bank.

  516. And see,

  517. the unbelievers suffering,

  518. here's the reality,

  519. and this should help us

  520. to reach out to our friends

  521. that don't know Christ.

  522. Their suffering is eternal.

  523. And the unfortunate thing,

  524. this is the best

  525. that it's going to be.

  526. And I'm thankful

  527. for the life God has given me.

  528. I think many of us

  529. would say that.

  530. You know,

  531. through the ups and the downs

  532. and the trials

  533. and the difficulties,

  534. we can still say this,

  535. we're blessed.

  536. That God loves us,

  537. that he cares for us,

  538. but I'm thankful

  539. this isn't as good

  540. as it's going to be.

  541. That there's going to be a day

  542. where we are with him

  543. and he is our God

  544. and we are his people

  545. and we have a communion with him.

  546. And it just reminds us

  547. that these manifold,

  548. these heavy temptations,

  549. they're just temporary.

  550. I love this thought.

  551. Every trial has an expiration date.

  552. Now, if you're like me,

  553. maybe you're thinking,

  554. I'd like to know when that is.

  555. Lord, can you send me

  556. that date, please?

  557. I'd like to put it on my calendar

  558. so I could just be ready

  559. for it to celebrate.

  560. But trials are seasonal.

  561. And when you think about

  562. men and women in the scriptures,

  563. you think about Noah

  564. and Abraham,

  565. we talked about Joseph last week,

  566. Job, David, Paul, and Peter,

  567. and the list could go on

  568. and on and on.

  569. But you know what you're going to find?

  570. They suffered.

  571. Life was hard.

  572. I think sometimes we think of them

  573. and we kind of have

  574. this Monday morning quarterback,

  575. we see all the good things

  576. in their life.

  577. Well, David was the king.

  578. Yeah, but don't forget,

  579. David was on the run

  580. for his own life for years.

  581. Like, he was anointed as king,

  582. but it was a long time

  583. before he actually took the throne.

  584. And it was a lot of difficulty.

  585. We think of Job

  586. and all the things he went through

  587. and Paul.

  588. I mean, we look at Paul,

  589. man, this great missionary,

  590. this great Christian.

  591. Paul's life was hard.

  592. I mean, you read the list

  593. of all the things

  594. Paul went through,

  595. you're thinking,

  596. no thanks.

  597. But Paul said this,

  598. this light affliction.

  599. You know why he said that?

  600. Because he knew it was seasonal.

  601. This wasn't what his life was.

  602. God would use those things.

  603. And in his focus,

  604. in his filters,

  605. we kind of talked about

  606. on Wednesday night,

  607. God, he looked at it and said,

  608. listen, I don't know why

  609. this is happening,

  610. but I'm going to filter it

  611. through this lens,

  612. that God loves me,

  613. that God cares for me,

  614. and he's going to work this

  615. for my good and for his glory.

  616. We see number four,

  617. we see this as well,

  618. that kind of Peter's

  619. going to remind us

  620. as we kind of walk

  621. a little bit further

  622. through his book

  623. in the coming weeks,

  624. that trials cannot steal our joy.

  625. You think, well,

  626. sometimes they do.

  627. Sometimes they do,

  628. but they don't have to.

  629. If we allow it to,

  630. it will steal our joy.

  631. But Peter's going to remind us,

  632. and we see here,

  633. that it doesn't have to be that way.

  634. That that's not how it works.

  635. I mean, you read the book of Acts,

  636. we've already mentioned

  637. a little bit,

  638. but Acts 5 tells us,

  639. listen,

  640. the apostles were arrested,

  641. beaten,

  642. thrown into jail,

  643. and they rejoiced.

  644. Instead of saying,

  645. Lord, why would you let this happen?

  646. They rejoiced that they were

  647. kind of worthy

  648. to suffer for Christ.

  649. I think, man,

  650. these people are weird.

  651. I mean,

  652. that would be the world's mindset.

  653. That's kind of when we read it,

  654. like,

  655. I don't know if I would say that.

  656. I mean,

  657. maybe some of you have read

  658. the Fox's Book of Martyrs,

  659. and people that have died

  660. for the cause of Christ.

  661. I mean,

  662. not just in Scripture,

  663. but really throughout history.

  664. And by the way,

  665. that's still happening today.

  666. That people are still being

  667. persecuted to the death

  668. for the cause of Christ.

  669. But you'll read and hear

  670. about people that are singing

  671. and praying for those

  672. as they are being burned alive

  673. at the stake.

  674. You think,

  675. that doesn't make sense.

  676. Well,

  677. it doesn't make sense

  678. unless hope is real.

  679. And it is.

  680. And that's why we can see that.

  681. That's why Peter can stand here

  682. and he knows

  683. what they're going through,

  684. that they have been scattered.

  685. You look at the book of James

  686. and the 12 tribes

  687. which are scattered abroad.

  688. It has that same idea.

  689. Now listen,

  690. life has thrown them a curveball,

  691. but it doesn't mean

  692. that hope has left them,

  693. that it's still available

  694. for them today.

  695. And here's kind of

  696. the takeaway for us

  697. before we move on

  698. throughout the message.

  699. is we don't need to interpret

  700. hardship in our life

  701. as God abandoning us.

  702. That's not what it is.

  703. That's not how it works.

  704. I mean,

  705. sometimes we can do it

  706. without even realizing it.

  707. We may think things

  708. and we get down

  709. and we're kind of focused

  710. on the circumstances

  711. and we think like,

  712. well,

  713. if God loved me,

  714. then marriage wouldn't be this hard.

  715. Newsflash.

  716. Marriage is hard.

  717. And I love her to death.

  718. And I think she loves me to death

  719. most of the time.

  720. But you know why marriage is hard?

  721. Because you take two sinners

  722. and you put them in the same house.

  723. Marriage is hard,

  724. but here's the thing.

  725. It's worth it.

  726. But if we get frustrated,

  727. we get struggling,

  728. and our world says,

  729. hey,

  730. well,

  731. it's just not working out,

  732. just drop them and get a new one.

  733. You know what you're going to find out?

  734. It was probably the Indian

  735. that was in the other one too.

  736. It's the same issue

  737. and we begin to think things

  738. that aren't true

  739. and we think,

  740. if God was blessing me,

  741. then I wouldn't be struggling financially.

  742. But maybe that's not why God is doing that.

  743. Maybe God is allowing certain things to happen

  744. so we learn to lean on Him.

  745. We learn to trust Him a little bit more

  746. because you know,

  747. sometimes it's a lot easier

  748. to trust what we have.

  749. We can look it up on the bank account.

  750. We look it up online.

  751. We say,

  752. well,

  753. I'm okay

  754. because at least I have this.

  755. Well,

  756. that's not where our trust is

  757. because guess what?

  758. I can go like that.

  759. It can be gone.

  760. You know,

  761. if God wasn't,

  762. if God was with me

  763. like He promised

  764. that He'd never leave me

  765. or forsake me,

  766. I wouldn't feel this lonely.

  767. Because sometimes we can be

  768. in a room full of people

  769. and feel alone

  770. but instead,

  771. instead of allowing those thoughts

  772. to come in

  773. because of just the difficulty of life,

  774. we can remind ourselves,

  775. hey,

  776. this is part of the journey

  777. and I'm going to trust

  778. that God knows what He's doing

  779. and it's only for a season.

  780. That's what Peter is reminding us

  781. here in this verse.

  782. So maybe this week,

  783. maybe you're going through it right now.

  784. When this heaviness comes,

  785. sometimes our natural reaction

  786. is to kind of panic.

  787. Lord,

  788. remove it.

  789. Lord,

  790. get rid of it.

  791. I need to get,

  792. I need this out of my life

  793. when that sorrow,

  794. when that anxiety,

  795. whatever it comes,

  796. kind of boils to the surface.

  797. Listen,

  798. don't assume the worst

  799. because I think that's what we do.

  800. We're naturally prone to do that

  801. but Peter reminds us,

  802. hey,

  803. trials are real

  804. but they're not eternal.

  805. We can be,

  806. we can have hope in that.

  807. So the trials are real.

  808. He says it.

  809. He said,

  810. listen,

  811. you know this to the people

  812. that he's writing to

  813. because you're going through it.

  814. He wasn't convincing them.

  815. He was reminding them

  816. just because you're going through it

  817. doesn't mean that God has forgotten you.

  818. And he wanted them to understand this.

  819. They're not random.

  820. We talked a little bit about this

  821. on Wednesday night

  822. when we were looking at

  823. Romans chapter 8 verse 28.

    Romans 8:28

  824. Sometimes it feels like that,

  825. doesn't it?

  826. You think,

  827. I know I've gone through things in life

  828. and I thought,

  829. man,

  830. everything was going well.

  831. Where did this come from?

  832. You ever been there?

  833. I mean,

  834. it came out of left field.

  835. I'm like,

  836. God,

  837. how about some heads up on this?

  838. But let me just remind you,

  839. it's not random.

  840. That God is still in control.

  841. That he is still sovereign.

  842. That he is still on the throne.

  843. And Peter's going to show us here

  844. in verse number 7

  845. why God allows them.

  846. God allows these trials

  847. because hope is found

  848. in the reason

  849. we're going through the trial.

  850. Look at verse number 7.

  851. That the trial of your faith

  852. being much more precious

  853. than of gold that perisheth,

  854. though it be tried with fire,

  855. might be found unto praise

  856. and honor and glory

  857. at the appearing

  858. of Jesus Christ.

  859. I mean,

  860. to be honest,

  861. my flesh

  862. would much rather Peter have said,

  863. listen,

  864. if you love God

  865. and you have faith in him,

  866. you won't have any trials in life.

  867. That would be my life verse.

  868. I'd be all about that.

  869. I think I would.

  870. But in fact,

  871. Peter just gives us

  872. the exact opposite.

  873. He says,

  874. because you love the Lord,

  875. because he saved you,

  876. because he's adopted you

  877. into his family,

  878. your faith will be tested.

  879. And you should want that.

  880. You should want that

  881. in your life.

  882. You think,

  883. why would I want that?

  884. Because I know

  885. growing up in school,

  886. I didn't want tests.

  887. Now I know

  888. we're going to raise our hands.

  889. Brian would want a test.

  890. Brian loves tests.

  891. You know,

  892. I was the one like,

  893. do we have to take the test?

  894. You know,

  895. is that anybody else like that?

  896. Okay.

  897. I wouldn't want it,

  898. but you know what the test was?

  899. It was to,

  900. it was to prove

  901. what we have learned.

  902. It was to remind us

  903. of that growth.

  904. And,

  905. and the same is true

  906. in our walk with the Lord.

  907. Faith that has never been tested

  908. is faith that's really

  909. never been proven.

  910. Because the reality is

  911. you're going to walk

  912. through a fire.

  913. Life is going to throw you

  914. a curve ball.

  915. And we get,

  916. we have a faith

  917. that's solid.

  918. But it needs to be tested.

  919. It needs to be proven.

  920. God has always used testing

  921. to reveal

  922. and strengthen our faith.

  923. Because you know

  924. what sometimes

  925. the testing does?

  926. Here's what it did

  927. to me in school.

  928. It proved I did not study.

  929. You know,

  930. and you know,

  931. I go home to my mom,

  932. I'm like,

  933. you know,

  934. I start throwing things out

  935. like every teenager does.

  936. Well,

  937. the,

  938. the average score

  939. in the class was this.

  940. Anybody ever done that?

  941. You know,

  942. you're trying to justify

  943. all the reasons

  944. why your score was.

  945. Here's why your score was.

  946. You probably didn't

  947. put the effort in.

  948. The teacher said,

  949. here,

  950. here's what you need to learn.

  951. And sometimes God

  952. gives us the word of God.

  953. He gives us the,

  954. he gives us the answers.

  955. But you know what?

  956. Sometimes we have to learn

  957. the hard way.

  958. Good thing I'm not

  959. the only one.

  960. He told Israel

  961. in Deuteronomy chapter 8

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  962. that he tested them

  963. to know what was

  964. in their heart.

  965. He wanted them to see

  966. what was in their heart.

  967. He wanted them to see

  968. where they had areas to go.

  969. James chapter 1

    James 1 chapter mention

  970. tells us this,

  971. hey,

  972. when trials,

  973. when difficulties

  974. come in your life,

  975. rejoice.

  976. You think,

  977. what?

  978. You know why?

  979. Because the trying

  980. of your faith

  981. work with patience

  982. and when we let patience

  983. have our perfect work,

  984. then we're complete

  985. and entire wanting nothing.

  986. And if we struggle

  987. and we come into a difficulty,

  988. James tells us,

  989. let him ask of God

  990. who giveth all men liberally.

  991. If you need wisdom,

  992. go to God.

  993. You don't have to go

  994. through the trial

  995. and just kind of wonder.

  996. No,

  997. you can talk

  998. to your father.

  999. I mean,

  1000. think about it.

1001. We kind of mentioned already,

1002. but think about all the great

1003. men and women in Scripture.

  1004. We admire them

  1005. for so many reasons.

  1006. I mean,

  1007. you think about Noah.

  1008. I mean,

  1009. God told him

  1010. to build a boat.

  1011. It's going to rain.

  1012. What's rain?

  1013. He doesn't know

  1014. what that is.

1015. From what we can tell

  1016. in Scripture,

  1017. he's never going

  1018. to experience that.

  1019. And yet,

  1020. for 120 years,

  1021. it wasn't like

  1022. build a boat

  1023. and the next day

  1024. it's going to rain.

  1025. No,

  1026. for 120 years,

  1027. the Bible says

  1028. he was a preacher

  1029. of righteousness.

  1030. I would imagine

  1031. Noah had days

  1032. where he's thinking,

  1033. I'm not sure

  1034. what is going on.

  1035. Lord,

1036. is this really worth it?

  1037. Is this boat

  1038. really worth it?

  1039. Guess what?

  1040. It turned out

1041. it was pretty worth it.

  1042. You think of Abraham.

  1043. I mean,

1044. a man of the father

  1045. of faith,

  1046. we would call him

  1047. sometimes.

  1048. Leaves his homeland,

  1049. goes to this land.

  1050. He doesn't even know

  1051. where he's going.

  1052. He gets there.

  1053. But you know

  1054. what he finds

1055. as soon as he gets there?

1056. The land that he was promised

  1057. is full of enemies

  1058. and then there's

  1059. a giant famine.

  1060. And so many times

  1061. he didn't do

1062. what he was supposed to

1063. and God brought him back

  1064. and yet we see

1065. also times where he said,

  1066. hey listen,

  1067. I know you waited

  1068. years and years

1069. and years for this son

  1070. but here's what I want you

  1071. to do,

  1072. sacrifice him.

  1073. That's kind of

  1074. testing your faith

  1075. a little bit.

  1076. I'll just be honest,

  1077. I'm not sure I could

  1078. go up that mountain

  1079. like Abraham did.

  1080. But he did

  1081. and he found out,

  1082. the Bible tells us

  1083. in Hebrews,

1084. you know why he did it?

  1085. Because he thought

1086. even if I sacrifice him,

  1087. God will raise him

  1088. from the dead.

  1089. That's a faith.

  1090. But it was something

  1091. that strengthened Abraham.

  1092. We see Job,

  1093. we see Moses,

  1094. we see Daniel

  1095. and the lion's den,

1096. we see the three Hebrew boys

  1097. and they trusted God

  1098. and even Peter

  1099. and Paul.

  1100. And the reason

  1101. we admire their faith

  1102. so much

  1103. is when it went

  1104. into the fire,

  1105. it came out

  1106. genuine.

  1107. Listen,

  1108. sometimes that's why

  1109. God wants you

1110. to go through the fire.

1111. That's why he allows you

1112. to go through the fire.

1113. Because he wants to deepen

  1114. and strengthen that faith.

  1115. Because maybe there was

  1116. something you went through

  1117. in your life

1118. and you wish you wouldn't have

  1119. but now you're walking

  1120. through something right now,

  1121. you know what you're

  1122. holding on to?

  1123. Well, God came through

  1124. here and here

  1125. and here

1126. and I think if he did it

1127. here and here and here,

1128. I think he can do it

  1129. right now.

1130. That he's never failed us.

1131. That not one of his promises

  1132. ever come untrue.

1133. See, God is not interested

  1134. in this untested faith.

1135. No, he wants to test.

  1136. You should desire that.

  1137. We should desire

1138. that God works in our life

1139. and he tells us here

  1140. in verse number seven

1141. the purpose of the fire,

1142. the purpose of the trial.

1143. He says it's the same way

1144. it's for this one goal

  1145. to refine our faith.

  1146. That's what they do

  1147. with gold.

  1148. When you put gold

  1149. into a fire,

1150. it doesn't lose its value.

1151. You know what it does?

  1152. It gains purity.

  1153. It gets rid of

  1154. some of those things

1155. that shouldn't be in there

  1156. because it can get

  1157. contaminated with things

1158. and they put it in the fire

  1159. so it's pure gold.

  1160. And that's what God

1161. wants to do in our life.

1162. And sometimes it feels like

  1163. where is God

  1164. in this trial?

1165. And I love what Job

1166. told us in Job 23.8.

1167. He feels the same way

  1168. that you probably felt

1169. at some point in your life.

  1170. He said this,

  1171. Behold,

  1172. I go forward,

  1173. he's not there,

  1174. and go backward,

1175. but I cannot perceive him.

  1176. On the left hand

  1177. where he doth work,

1178. but I cannot behold him.

  1179. He hideth himself

  1180. on the right hand

1181. and I cannot see him.

1182. You ever felt like that

  1183. sometimes in life?

1184. He's looking for the Lord

  1185. and he's going everywhere

1186. that he thinks he should be

1187. and he can't find him.

1188. But here's what Job said,

  1189. but he,

  1190. but God,

1191. knoweth the way that I take

1192. and when he hath tried me,

1193. I shall come forth as gold.

  1194. Job didn't understand everything.

  1195. And Job was struggling

1196. and at first he was kind of strong

  1197. and then his friends

1198. were kind of beating him down

  1199. and he's thinking,

1200. okay, well maybe I got

1201. some issues going on here.

1202. But you know what God

1203. was really doing in Job?

  1204. He was refining him.

  1205. He was purifying him.

  1206. He wanted Job

1207. to be more and better

  1208. and closer to him

1209. than he had ever been before.

  1210. And for Job,

  1211. that's the way

1212. that he was going to grow.

  1213. And that truth

  1214. isn't just for Job.

1215. It can be true in your life.

1216. That you might be walking

  1217. through something right now.

  1218. You're going to walk

  1219. through something

1220. at some point in your life.

  1221. And you're tested faith

1222. and when God proves it,

1223. here's what he wants it to do.

1224. He wants it to bring praise

1225. and honor and glory to him.

1226. And to help you grow in him.

1227. Because there is coming a day

  1228. that we will be

  1229. with the Lord forever.

1230. But you know what I want to hear

1231. from the Lord more than anything?

  1232. Well done,

1233. thou good and faithful servant.

1234. How do we do that?

1235. We trust him in the trial.

  1236. Because he reminds us

1237. at the end of that verse

  1238. that we're going through

  1239. all of this

1240. and it's going to be something

  1241. we can present

1242. at the appearing of Jesus Christ.

  1243. that we've been faithful

  1244. through it all.

1245. Listen, faith matters to God.

  1246. Without faith,

1247. it is impossible to please him.

1248. But it's not just faith

  1249. as a generality.

1250. Here's what matters to God.

  1251. Your faith.

1252. He wants to grow your faith.

1253. Listen, you might walk through trial.

1254. Your trial's not for everybody.

  1255. It's for you.

1256. It's to help you grow.

1257. It's to bring you closer.

  1258. And Peter's reminding them

  1259. of this truth

1260. and reminds us today as well

  1261. that this changes

  1262. how we view trials.

  1263. When you realize

1264. that maybe what you're going through

  1265. is not punishment,

1266. it's the fact that God loves you.

1267. And he cares so much for you

1268. that he wants you to grow.

  1269. I know my knee-jerk reaction is,

1270. why is this happening to me?

1271. Anybody here else think that?

1272. I mean, something happens in my life,

  1273. like, Lord,

1274. why is this happening to me?

1275. I mean, you should have talked to Renee.

1276. I mean, sometimes we do.

  1277. We think, well,

  1278. I don't deserve this.

1279. And we may not say it out loud,

1280. but sometimes it's what's in our heart

  1281. and that's what's in our mind.

1282. Maybe we just need to ask God,

1283. what do you want to shape in my life?

1284. Lord, how do you want to grow me here?

1285. God, why are you stretching me here?

1286. Is there something you want me to learn?

1287. Because it could be the fact

1288. that he is teaching you to trust

1289. instead of trying to control everything.

1290. Because I want to control things.

1291. I want to be in control of all of these things.

1292. And here's what God says,

1293. why don't you just let go?

1294. But God, what if I let go?

  1295. What's going to happen?

  1296. Just trust me.

1297. And maybe that's what the trial teaches us.

1298. Maybe he's teaching us patience

  1299. instead of panic.

  1300. Anybody here super patient?

1301. I think patience is one of those things

1302. we could all grow in.

1303. But it's a lot easier to panic, isn't it?

1304. It's a lot easier to try to figure it out ourselves

1305. instead of just standing still

1306. and letting the Lord work in our life

  1307. and taking that step.

1308. Because I know in my life,

1309. God sent trials to me before

1310. and he sent things in my life

1311. and I've tried to run past them.

1312. I'm trying to run away from them.

  1313. You have too, probably.

1314. And you know what I have to realize?

1315. They keep chasing me down

1316. because God's trying to teach me patience.

1317. It's not for me to outrun.

1318. Maybe he's trying to teach us

1319. how to really get a hold of him.

  1320. How to really pray

1321. instead of just being self-reliant.

1322. Because when our prayer life is lacking,

  1323. here's what we're really saying.

1324. God, I can handle this.

  1325. I'm good right now.

  1326. I don't need you.

1327. You say, well, I would never say that.

1328. But prayer just reminds us

  1329. who we're dependent on.

  1330. Because he already knows

  1331. what we need.

1332. He already knows what we're thinking.

1333. He knows everything about us.

1334. But you know what prayer reminds us?

  1335. That he knows that.

1336. And that he loves us.

1337. And that he wants us to come to him.

1338. And it's that posture of dependence.

  1339. And maybe that trial

1340. is something that pushes us

  1341. to our knees.

1342. And that's exactly where he wants us.

1343. And we really begin to see

1344. how much he loves us

1345. and how dependent on ourselves we've been

  1346. while maybe saying,

1347. yeah, I trust God in everything.

1348. And really, we're just leaning on ourself

1349. and our ingenuity and our intellect.

1350. That's not what God has called us to do.

1351. Listen, he's trying to refine you.

  1352. That's the purpose of a trial.

  1353. Just like gold,

1354. he wants us to come forth

1355. better than we went into the fire.

1356. And sometimes I think we can waste a trial.

1357. We try to rush the process.

1358. But we need to trust

1359. that God is just maybe doing

1360. a refining work in your life,

  1361. not a punishing work.

1362. Sometimes we look at people's trials

  1363. and say,

  1364. wonder what they did.

1365. That's the book of Job, by the way,

  1366. in a nutshell.

  1367. No.

1368. Job had all these things going on

  1369. and his friend said,

  1370. wonder what he did.

  1371. And for like, I don't know,

  1372. 30 chapters,

  1373. they tell him everything

  1374. they think he did.

1375. But it really wasn't about that.

1376. Yes, there was areas in Job's life

1377. that needed to be refined,

1378. but it was just this.

1379. God wanted Job to be closer to him.

1380. See, faith that's refined by fire

1381. leads to something much deeper.

1382. It reminds us how much we love God.

1383. When you walk through the difficulty,

1384. when you walk through the trial,

1385. and you see God work,

1386. and you see him move,

1387. and you see him sustain,

1388. and you trust him more and more,

1389. we begin to love him even more.

1390. So verse number eight tells us,

1391. that we can love the unseen Christ,

1392. whom having not seen, ye love,

1393. and whom though you now see him not,

  1394. yet believing,

  1395. ye rejoice with unspeakable,

  1396. with joy unspeakable,

  1397. and full of glory.

  1398. When Peter preached there

1399. in the book of Acts,

  1400. in the early church,

1401. when Peter's writing these letters here,

1402. he wasn't speaking from a secondhand source.

1403. He didn't Google all these things about Jesus.

1404. No, Peter had seen Jesus.

  1405. He walked with Jesus.

  1406. Literally, physically was there.

  1407. Shared meals with him.

1408. Traveled the road with him.

1409. But here's what Peter also saw.

  1410. He failed Jesus miserably.

1411. But Peter also was on the receiving end

1412. of the restoration of Jesus.

1413. There in John chapter number 21.

1414. I mean, this man writing here

1415. was a man that knew the look of disapproval.

1416. You know, it's the same look.

1417. I feel like the look that Jesus gave Peter

1418. at that, maybe at that meal,

1419. was the same look your mama gave you

1420. at some point in your life.

1421. You ever been on the receiving end of that?

1422. Sometimes, I mean, I was just like,

1423. I don't want to ever see that look again.

  1424. I mean, Peter,

1425. the Bible tells us when Peter denied Jesus

1426. that he went out and wept bitterly.

  1427. They locked eyes.

  1428. And it broke Peter.

  1429. And he just thought,

1430. well, I can never do anything for the Lord.

1431. But this is also the same man.

1432. And that's why he's able to write a book like this,

1433. who experienced the joy of forgiveness.

1434. But Peter says something remarkable in verse number 8.

1435. He reminds us, hey, listen,

1436. you can love Jesus the same way I love Jesus,

1437. even though you've never seen him.

1438. Yeah, it would have been nice.

1439. And I can't wait to see Jesus.

  1440. I'll just be honest.

  1441. I can't wait for that day.

1442. But I still love him.

1443. I love him with all of my heart.

1444. And I want to remind us today

1445. that faith does not require sight,

1446. that love does not require physical presence.

1447. No, in fact, Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5-7

1448. that we are to walk by faith and not by sight.

1449. Hebrews chapter 11 reminds us that faith

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

1450. is the evidence of things not seen

1451. and the hope of things that are hoped for.

1452. And if you're like me, you love Christ.

1453. You know why you love Christ?

1454. Because you've seen his grace in your life.

1455. That you've known his mercy.

1456. That you've experienced his forgiveness more than once.

1457. That you've felt his patience with you.

1458. I feel it all the time in my life.

1459. Jesus told Thomas there in the upper room,

1460. blessed are they that have not seen and yet believe.

1461. But as we think about our life,

1462. he's saying, listen, you're here and life is hard, guys.

1463. But I just want to remind you that you still have joy unspeakable.

1464. Think about all the things that God has done in your life.

1465. Think about how God has moved in your life.

1466. As Peter was there and he denied Christ

1467. and he's sitting there at the fireside in John 21,

1468. that moment he just had to feel like an absolute failure.

1469. The beginning of that chapter, he basically quit.

1470. He put his two weeks notice in him being a disciple.

1471. He said this, I go fishing.

1472. And it wasn't like a little trip because he liked fishing.

1473. He was saying, I tried and I failed.

1474. There was some hope for me.

1475. You know, I had a lot of things going,

1476. but it's not really working out.

1477. But here we are studying this little letter

1478. that Peter's writing all about hope,

1479. all about the things that God offers.

1480. Because in that moment, Peter,

1481. when he thought everything was gone

1482. and God could never use him

1483. and hope had died, Jesus showed up.

1484. And he just reminded him, Peter, I love you.

1485. Hey, do you love me?

1486. Listen, I went to the cross for you, Peter.

1487. I died for your sins, Peter.

1488. It was never about your boisterous.

1489. It was never about your claims.

1490. It was all about your trust in me.

1491. See, Peter, Peter failed so greatly

1492. because he believed with his flesh

1493. and with his self that, hey, I can do this.

1494. But sometimes our flesh has a head-on collision

  1495. with difficulties.

1496. And when that hard time comes,

1497. that trial comes, we think,

1498. well, I gave it a good run.

1499. That's kind of how Peter was.

1500. But Jesus brought him to this realization

1501. that love, that that hope that Christ gives,

  1502. not the failures,

1503. was what his motivation should be.

1504. See, Peter was motivated to quit

1505. because he thought, well, that's just what I am.

1506. Jesus said, no, I came to change your life.

1507. And that's what he did.

1508. Some of my favorite verses in all the scripture

  1509. are Psalm 116, 1 and 2.

  1510. The psalmist says this,

1511. I love the Lord because he hath heard my voice

  1512. and my supplications,

1513. because he has inclined his ear unto me.

1514. Therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.

  1515. It's not because we're perfect.

1516. You know why we can do that?

1517. Because our hope is alive.

1518. Because Christ is real in our life.

1519. And so the question is simple

1520. as we kind of wrap this up.

  1521. Do you love him?

  1522. Do you love Jesus?

1523. See, Peter was there at one moment in his life.

1524. And it was a turning point for him.

1525. Because when you read John 21,

  1526. he said, listen,

1527. when things all get back to where they should be,

1528. I'm going to use you.

1529. You're going to be a great help to others.

1530. And love isn't just words.

1531. I think you had to experience this this past week.

1532. If you have a significant other,

1533. you know, we had this pack

1534. that we're not buying Valentine's Day gifts.

1535. And then she bought a Valentine's Day gift.

  1536. And then said this,

1537. oh, you don't have to get me anything.

1538. Listen, this ain't my first rodeo.

1539. I'm alive in here today.

  1540. You know why?

1541. Because I went and got something.

1542. And I don't have a problem getting something for her.

1543. Because love is not just something I tell her.

1544. Love is something we show.

  1545. Love is an action.

1546. And that's what Peter's reminding them here,

  1547. that God is working

1548. and difficulties are in your life

1549. and they're for your good

1550. and they're for his glory

1551. and you're going to love him even more and more.

1552. And you're experiencing that right now.

1553. He's saying, stop and think about it.

1554. Because love just shows up in different ways.

1555. You know what it does?

1556. It shows up in obedience when it's hard.

1557. Because life is hard right here for them.

  1558. But he's saying, listen, it's still,

1559. we still got to trust the Lord.

  1560. Listen, you're rejoicing greatly.

1561. Think about that joy unspeakable you have.

1562. You're on the run literally.

1563. But you can still obey the Lord.

1564. That we can be faithful maybe when nobody's looking

1565. or nobody thinks it's important.

1566. They lived in a world where it wasn't a big deal.

1567. Faithfulness was something you want to maybe keep under wraps

1568. because you can maybe keep your head.

1569. And that's where they were.

1570. Love shows up when it's trusting,

  1571. when life hurts.

1572. Maybe this week we let love motivate our obedience.

1573. Because we think of all these things that we have in Christ.

1574. This hope that we have for the life that we live.

1575. That we let hope strengthen the endurance.

1576. When we think about, hey, all of this is mine.

1577. You know what it can do?

1578. It can help you endure.

1579. It can help you persevere.

1580. It can help you thrive in your life.

1581. The idea of these few verses right here is this.

  1582. That trials are real.

1583. They're going to be heavy in your life.

1584. They're going to make you have some difficult times.

1585. And there's going to be a lot of them probably.

  1586. But they're temporary.

1587. We need to hang on to that truth.

1588. We need to be reminded of that.

1589. What you might be facing in life, it can't steal your identity.

1590. Because your identity is not in what you do.

1591. It's in who you know.

1592. Our identity is in Christ.

1593. That's what we are as his children.

1594. It can't steal your inheritance.

1595. It can't steal your hope.

  1596. They tried that already.

1597. And he walked out of the grave the third day.

  1598. It cannot take those.

1599. We have hope in who we are and what we have.

1600. And Peter says, listen, you can even have hope in the trials of your faith.

1601. And this sermon goes so well with what we looked at Wednesday night.

1602. Where Paul told the Romans,

1603. And we know that all things work together for good.

1604. To them that love God.

1605. To those who are called according to his purpose.

1606. From whom he did foreknow, he did also predestinate to be conformed into the image of his son.

1607. I mean, we boil it all down to this.

  1608. Here's what trials do.

1609. They make us more like Jesus.

1610. Because you look at Jesus' life, you know what it was?

1611. He was a man of sorrows.

1612. He walked through the trials.

1613. You know what trials do?

  1614. They refine us.

1615. They do not define us.

  1616. They help us grow.

1617. See, the world tries to define us by all the things that we have in our life.

1618. They try to define us by our problems, by our diagnosis.

  1619. Maybe it's a failed relationship.

  1620. It's a failure in life.

  1621. It's a struggle we go through.

1622. But you know what Peter's reminding us?

  1623. What defines us?

  1624. Redemption.

  1625. Grace.

1626. Forgiveness through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1627. That he offers a hope that is real for a life that is real.

1628. I know we sang this song earlier, but just listen to the words.

1629. My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus Christ and righteousness.

1630. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name.

1631. When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace.

1632. In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.

1633. The third verse is this.

1634. His oath, his covenant, his blood, supporting me in the whelming flood.

1635. When all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay.

1636. When he shall come with trumpet sound, oh, may I then in him be found.

1637. In him my righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.

1638. On Christ the solid rock I stand.

1639. All other ground is sinking sand.

1640. Peter's writing to a group of believers.

1641. The world around them is sinking.

  1642. And Peter says this.

1643. You have a rock to stand on.

1644. And his name is Jesus Christ.

1645. Real hope for real life.

1646. Would you stand with your heads bowed, with your eyes closed?

  1647. Amen.

  1648. Amen.
