  1. Joshua chapter number 24, if you don't mind, if you are able to stand for the reading of God's word.

  2. Joshua chapter number 24, we're going to do a little bit of reading, alright?

  3. So get used to standing for a little bit, okay?

  4. We're going to read the first 15 verses, but if you don't catch anything I say for the rest of the sermon,

  5. make sure we're getting what God has for us in His word today.

  6. It says in Joshua 24, verse number 1,

  7. And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem,

  8. and called for the elders of Israel and for their heads and for their judges and for their officers.

  9. And they presented themselves before God.

  10. And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel,

  11. Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time,

  12. even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nacor, and they served other gods.

  13. And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood,

  14. and led him throughout all the land of Canaan,

  15. and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.

  16. And I gave unto Isaac, Jacob, and Esau,

  17. and I gave unto Esau, Mount Seir, to possess it.

  18. But Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.

  19. I sent Moses also, and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt,

  20. according to that which I did among them,

  21. and afterward I brought you out.

  22. And I brought your fathers out of Egypt,

  23. and ye came unto the sea.

  24. And the Egyptians pursued after your fathers,

  25. with chariots and horsemen unto the Red Sea.

  26. And when they cried unto the Lord,

  27. he put darkness between you and the Egyptians,

  28. and brought the sea upon them, and covered them.

  29. And your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt.

  30. And ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.

  31. And I brought you into the land of the Amorites,

  32. which dwelt on the other side, Jordan.

  33. And they fought with you,

  34. and I gave them into your hand,

  35. that ye might possess their land.

  36. And I destroyed them from before you.

  37. Then Balak, the son of Zippor, king of Moab,

  38. arose and warred against Israel,

  39. and sent and called Balaam, the son of Baor, to curse you.

  40. But I would not hearken unto Balaam.

  41. Therefore he blessed you still,

  42. so I delivered you out of his hand.

  43. And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho.

  44. And the men of Jericho fought against you,

  45. the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites,

  46. and the Hitzites, and the Girgashites,

  47. and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

  48. And I delivered them into your hand.

  49. And I sent the hornet before you,

  50. which draved them out from before you,

  51. even the two kings of the Amorites,

  52. but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.

  53. And I have given you a land for which ye did not labor,

  54. and cities which ye built not.

  55. And ye dwell in them of the vineyards and olive yards,

  56. which ye planted not do ye eat.

  57. Now therefore fear the Lord,

  58. and serve him in sincerity and in truth,

  59. and put away the gods which your fathers served

  60. on the other side of the flood and in Egypt,

  61. and serve ye the Lord.

  62. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord,

  63. choose you this day whom ye will serve.

  64. Whether the gods which your fathers served

  65. that were on the other side of the flood,

  66. or the gods of the Amorites,

  67. in whose land ye dwell.

  68. But as for me, in my house,

  69. we will serve the Lord.

  70. I have a very important decision

  71. that we are going to talk about today.

  72. Who are you going to choose?

  73. Let's go to the Lord in prayer.

  74. Dear Heavenly Father, I just thank you for this day.

  75. Thank you for this opportunity that we have

  76. to come into this place here at Central Baptist Church

  77. and worship and honor you.

  78. Be with this service, Lord.

  79. Speak to heart, speak to my heart in a special way today.

  80. And if there be anybody in here

  81. that has not asked you to be their Lord and Savior,

  82. help them to get that right today.

  83. In Jesus' name I pray.

  84. Amen.

  85. Thank you for standing.

  86. You may be seated.

  87. Man, we make a lot of decisions in a day, don't we?

  88. Think of all the decisions that we make.

  89. I know Pastor Tyler's used this as an illustration before,

  90. the decision to go out to eat.

  91. It's the age-old decision that couples have to decide

  92. what they're going to do.

  93. But a lot of times, households end up divided.

  94. Okay?

  95. And I'm going to use an illustration for this.

  96. Right now, Miss Tiffany is going through a diet.

  97. A diet plan set forth by Brother Cliff.

  98. And a lot of things right now she cannot eat.

  99. She cannot eat anything with sugar, flour, starches.

  100. And there's probably more than that.

  101. And me being the good husband that I am,

  102. I was going to try and do the diet with her.

  103. And then I realized that Coca-Cola has sugar in it.

  104. And I quickly realized that I could not do that.

  105. All right?

  106. So a lot of times what we'll do at night for dinner,

  107. my wife will make something just slightly different for her

  108. so she can stick to her diet and me and the kids eat chicken nuggets.

  109. Okay?

  110. That's what we kind of do.

  111. But right now, our house is divided on what we are going to eat.

  112. Sometimes our houses are divided on certain things.

  113. And I know we don't, like I said earlier,

  114. I know we don't have a ton of sports fans out there.

  115. But I was taught at a very young age.

  116. Very young age.

  117. We are to hate evil.

  118. All right?

  119. And I think that's a pretty commonplace thing.

  120. We are to hate evil, aren't we?

  121. And so my parents raised me knowing right from wrong.

  122. So they raised me as an A&M fan.

  123. All right?

  124. They raised me liking the maroon and white.

  125. All right?

  126. And they taught me from a very young age

  127. that the color burnt orange was very evil.

  128. And we stay far, far away from it.

  129. All right?

  130. That's what I was taught.

  131. Okay?

  132. So don't be mad at me.

  133. Be mad at my parents.

  134. Okay?

  135. I was taught that you hated Texas.

  136. You loved Texas A&M.

  137. That's just how I grew up.

  138. And, of course, I met my lovely wife.

  139. And she was not kind of,

  140. she was not way out there as I was.

  141. She didn't hate A&M.

  142. But she liked Texas.

  143. So the very first time we met at Chili's,

  144. that was one of the things we had to talk out.

  145. All right?

  146. Because that was an obstacle.

  147. Okay?

  148. You cannot have obstacles in your marriage.

  149. It's just not a good thing.

  150. So we talked about it and she said,

  151. man, I guess one day maybe I can like Texas A&M.

  152. And I...

  153. Appreciate that.

  154. Yeah.

  155. And she did start watching A&M with me a little bit.

  156. But she does not hate Texas yet.

  157. All right?

  158. I've got her on the side of liking A&M more.

  159. But she says she still roots for Texas.

  160. All right?

  161. I told her you can't have good and evil.

  162. All right?

  163. You can only have one.

  164. But...

  165. So I have tried to eliminate the division in our house.

  166. But occasionally when A&M and Texas play each other in whatever sport,

  167. she has to make a decision.

  168. And sometimes she decides that she's going to root for both teams.

  169. And I hate that.

  170. All right?

  171. You can't ride the fence.

  172. That's what God taught us.

  173. Okay?

  174. But our house is divided.

  175. All right?

  176. I like A&M.

  177. And against my wishes, she still likes Texas a little bit.

  178. All right?

  179. Our houses are divided on certain things.

  180. On certain silly things.

  181. Right?

  182. We'll compromise with each other if it's not a huge, big decision.

  183. But today, we are going to discuss a decision that cannot be compromised.

  184. These little things like sports and the food that we eat, our likes and dislikes, our interests,

  185. they can divide our household and we can have a fun time with that.

  186. But the decision that we're making today, our entire household needs to decide today what way we're going to go.

  187. It can't be compromised.

  188. We can't compromise the way that we're going.

  189. And that's kind of where Joshua's coming from here.

  190. Just to give you a little back story of where we're at here in Joshua chapter number 24,

  191. this is Joshua's last charge to the children of Israel.

  192. This is his last time that he's going to stand before them.

  193. He's getting very close to death.

  194. He's getting very close to dying in his last breath.

  195. So he is now thinking of what is the best thing that I can leave with the children of Israel before I die.

  196. The children of Israel have had two great leaders in Moses and Joshua.

  197. And now the second of those great leaders is going to pass away.

  198. And he doesn't know how to make sure to get through the Israelites' heads that regardless who's leading you,

  199. you should be looking at God.

  200. And he's not really sure how to do that.

  201. So I imagine this is how my brain works.

  202. He's got a little feather pen that he's writing out his speech.

  203. Okay.

  204. He's writing on paper, what should I say?

  205. And then he realizes something.

  206. No speech that he could possibly give could really top everything else that has happened over the last several,

  207. several years that he has led the children of Israel.

  208. So he doesn't really know where to go.

  209. And then he realizes something.

  210. I'm not going to be able to say anything to get these guys to follow Christ.

  211. I'm not going to be able to say anything to get these guys to truly follow the Lord.

  212. If you followed the history of Israel at all,

  213. these guys, they do some wrong things.

  214. They follow idols.

  215. They're not always following God.

  216. So what Joshua decides to do is he decides to remind the children of Israel who got them there,

  217. who led them to where they are at right now.

  218. At this point in time, the children of Israel are experiencing many blessings.

  219. They've experienced many victories.

  220. And sometimes when we experience victories in our lives,

  221. we tend to look inward and say, man, I can't believe I did that.

  222. Man, that was a great, that was a great job that I just did.

  223. So what Joshua takes here is I'm going to remind him who got him here.

  224. By the way, it wasn't Joshua.

  225. It wasn't Moses.

  226. Great men of God, great leaders for God.

  227. But the only one that got the children of Israel where they're at today is God himself.

  228. And it says in verse number two,

  229. And Joshua said unto all the people,

  230. The very first words that Joshua says,

  231. Thus saith the Lord God of Israel.

  232. He puts a disclaimer over everything he's about to say.

  233. This is what God did.

  234. Not what you did.

  235. Not what anybody else here did.

  236. Not what our great fighters did.

  237. This was God.

  238. Joshua's nearing the end of his life,

  239. and he figures that the best thing he can do is point everybody back to God.

  240. Point number one here is remembering God's faithfulness.

  241. The only way to point our household,

  242. to point our lives back to God,

  243. is remembering what God did for us to begin with.

  244. Sometimes it's easily forgotten.

  245. I was saved now, I guess, 16 years ago.

  246. And you know, right when you get saved,

  247. that period of time when you get saved,

  248. you are on fire for God.

  249. For a couple weeks, maybe a couple months,

  250. even a couple of years.

  251. And before too long, if we're not careful,

  252. we forget what God did for us,

  253. and we say, I'm going to live my life my way.

  254. We're humans.

  255. Short-term memory loss.

  256. I've watched Finding Nemo.

  257. You ever watch Dory?

  258. He can't remember very much.

  259. Oftentimes we're like that.

  260. We forget what God has done for our lives.

  261. We forget where God has brought us out of.

  262. God has provided this great church,

  263. this great church building,

  264. where we can come in and worship God.

  265. Did you know around the world,

  266. a lot of people don't have that.

  267. A lot of people don't have the blessings

  268. that this place has been blessed with.

  269. But let me just tell you,

  270. it has nothing to do with any man.

  271. God gave it to all of us.

  272. We need tonight, or this morning,

  273. to remember God's faithfulness.

  274. Remember God's faithfulness.

  275. Underneath this letter A,

  276. God chose them.

  277. God chose them.

  278. I find this very interesting in verse number two,

  279. continuing on.

  280. Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood

  281. in the old time,

  282. even Terah,

  283. the father of Abraham,

  284. and the father of Nacor,

  285. and they served other gods.

  286. Do you notice that the household

  287. that Abraham came from

  288. was not a godly household?

  289. The household that Abraham came from,

  290. as a matter of fact,

  291. worshipped other gods.

  292. They worshipped other things.

  293. They did not worship the true God.

  294. That's where Abraham came from.

  295. Did you know,

  296. I imagine there are a lot of us in here

  297. that maybe when we were children,

  298. grew up in households

  299. that did not honor God,

  300. that did not worship the one true God.

  301. But eventually,

  302. you have to make the decision for yourself

  303. and your household

  304. that you are going to serve God.

  305. That's what happened with Abraham.

  306. Abraham was not brought up in this.

  307. He was not a part of a Christian family

  308. in the slightest.

  309. But,

  310. God called him.

  311. He saw Abraham.

  312. He said,

  313. Abraham,

  314. I want you to come to me.

  315. I want you to work for me.

  316. I want you to serve me.

  317. Abraham had a choice.

  318. God chose him,

  319. but Abraham still had the choice,

  320. and Abraham chose God.

  321. There was a young man

  322. back in 1862

  323. is when he was born.

  324. This man was a great athlete.

  325. He was very, very fast.

  326. He was one of the faster men alive at the time.

  327. He'd run across all parts of the world

  328. racing and such.

  329. And by 1882,

  330. at 20 years old,

  331. this young man was drafted

  332. by the Chicago White Stockings baseball team.

  333. Now they're the Chicago White Sox.

  334. This young man got so hung up

  335. in the success,

  336. the fame,

  337. the fortune of the day,

  338. he got into things that he shouldn't have.

  339. He was heavy,

  340. heavy drinking alcohol.

  341. He got into things that he shouldn't have been in,

  342. and by 1886,

  343. four years after he was drafted,

  344. this man stumbled with some of his teammates

  345. into a street meeting

  346. held by the Pacific Garden Mission.

  347. As he listened to the gospel

  348. and heard believers singing hymns

  349. that reminded him of his godly mother,

  350. the Lord convicted his heart.

  351. This young man,

  352. five years later,

  353. after he was saved on this day,

  354. five years later,

  355. he gave up baseball.

  356. He gave up everything

  357. to follow God with his life.

  358. That man's name is Billy Sunday.

  359. If you have never heard of this man,

  360. this is one of the

  361. great preachers of his day

  362. that, by the way,

  363. was living in sin,

  364. that was worshiping other gods.

  365. God called him.

  366. He was in sin,

  367. and he still left his sin

  368. to follow God.

  369. Get this.

  370. Sin never stopped God from calling us,

  371. but sin can still push away the call.

  372. At the end of the day,

  373. it's our decision.

  374. Choose you this day.

  375. What are we going to choose?

  376. Billy Sunday's ministry

  377. reached many, many, many, many people

  378. for Christ.

  379. He was a great baseball player.

  380. He had his life in front of him.

  381. He had fame, fortune,

  382. all the works,

  383. but he chose God.

  384. Not because he grew up in God.

  385. Not because he grew up around it,

  386. but because he realized

  387. he had to make a decision for him.

  388. It wasn't based on

  389. what his parents had done.

  390. It wasn't based on

  391. any of his family.

  392. He had to make an individual decision

  393. to trust God.

  394. God chose Billy Sunday,

  395. but Billy Sunday

  396. still could have pushed him away.

  397. We have that same opportunity today.

  398. Did you know,

  399. as a Christian,

  400. God's calling you?

  401. You say,

  402. well, I'm not going to be a pastor.

  403. I'm not going to be a missionary.

  404. I'm not good at public speaking.

  405. I can't do it.

  406. God's not calling me.

  407. If you are a Christian,

  408. God is calling you.

  409. God wants you to follow him.

  410. God wants you to live your life for Christ.

  411. So God is calling you.

  412. Now, I'd be a fool to think

  413. there aren't one or two people,

  414. maybe more in here

  415. that are called into ministry.

  416. Answer that calling,

  417. but as a person

  418. that maybe isn't called into that,

  419. maybe God's calling you

  420. to reach your coworkers for Christ.

  421. Maybe God's calling you

  422. to tell your friends about Christ.

  423. Maybe God's just calling you

  424. to be an example

  425. that others around you can see.

  426. God's calling you.

  427. God's chosen you,

  428. but is your sin pushing him away?

  429. Is your sin pushing that call away?

  430. Today we need to answer that call.

  431. If you are in here and a Christian,

  432. God is calling you.

  433. Answer the call.

  434. Pick up the phone.

  435. Answer the call.

  436. Don't leave this building today

  437. without making the decision

  438. that you are going to follow Christ.

  439. The very first thing

  440. at the end of chapter number,

  441. or verse number 15,

  442. says,

  443. but as for me,

  444. but as for me.

  445. So Joshua first,

  446. before anything else,

  447. he has to make a decision

  448. in his own life

  449. that he's going to choose the Lord,

  450. that he's going to serve the Lord.

  451. First,

  452. he has to make a personal decision

  453. that he is going to follow God.

  454. Not only did God choose them,

  455. God delivered them.

  456. God delivered them.

  457. In verse number five,

  458. it says,

  459. I sent Moses also and Aaron

  460. and I plagued Egypt

  461. according to that

  462. which I did among them.

  463. And afterward,

  464. I brought you out

  465. and I brought your fathers

  466. out of Egypt

  467. and you came unto the sea

  468. and the Egyptians pursued

  469. after your fathers

  470. with chariots and horsemen

  471. under the Red Sea.

  472. Joshua was going through

  473. everything

  474. that God has done for them.

  475. Remember that time

  476. God did this for you?

  477. Remember that time

  478. God did this for you?

  479. I don't like it

  480. when I'll tell,

  481. I'll explain Christ to somebody,

  482. he preached the gospel

  483. to somebody individually

  484. and they'll say,

  485. man,

  486. I'm living in sin.

  487. I've done too much wrong.

  488. There's nothing God can do for me.

  489. God can deliver you.

  490. God delivered the people of Israel

  491. even when they didn't deserve it.

  492. We've heard the stories

  493. about the Israelites.

  494. They wouldn't stop complaining.

  495. They worshiped golden idols.

  496. They did a bunch of wrong things

  497. and God delivered them

  498. every single time.

  499. Every single time,

  500. God still delivered them.

  501. Egypt's bondage,

  502. the Red Sea,

  503. Pharaoh being destroyed,

  504. bringing them Moses and Aaron

  505. when they had nobody to lead them.

  506. Over and over and over,

  507. time and time again,

  508. God delivered them.

  509. God can deliver you too.

  510. You might be living in sin today.

  511. You might be saved,

  512. but you might be living in sin.

  513. A lot of these Israelites

  514. probably saved

  515. and they kept on failing

  516. time and time and time again.

  517. We're human,

  518. that's going to happen.

  519. But you know what they had to do?

  520. They had to turn back to God

  521. and say,

  522. God, can you help us?

  523. God, what are we going to do now?

  524. Where do we go?

  525. Verse number seven,

  526. it says,

  527. and when they cried unto the Lord.

  528. It didn't just happen.

  529. They had to go to God

  530. and say,

  531. God, we need help.

  532. Deliver us.

  533. God wants to help his people.

  534. God wants to help those

  535. that are in trouble.

  536. God wants to help those

  537. that are mired in sin.

  538. But we have to go to him and ask.

  539. We have to ask God

  540. to deliver us.

  541. God chose us

  542. and he also wants to deliver us.

  543. Thirdly,

  544. God defended them.

  545. Verse number eight,

  546. we won't read all this

  547. because there are a lot of places

  548. that I'm not keen on saying again.

  549. And I brought you

  550. into the land of the Amorites

  551. which dwelt on the other side of Jordan

  552. and they fought with you

  553. and I gave them into your hand

  554. and that ye might possess their land

  555. and I destroyed them

  556. from before you.

  557. Don't miss this.

  558. The battles that you're fighting

  559. cannot be won by you.

  560. You must lean on God

  561. to win those battles.

  562. And that's what Joshua was saying here.

  563. Remember all those battles that you had?

  564. He lists out all the ites

  565. in a few verses later, all right?

  566. All the Hivites,

  567. the Girgashites,

  568. all these guys,

  569. probably pretty big armies,

  570. maybe bigger than Israel.

  571. And Joshua said,

  572. remember how God defended us then?

  573. Remember that?

  574. Remember how it felt

  575. to watch God take over like he did?

  576. Do you remember that?

  577. I do.

  578. God defended them.

  579. Victory over the Amorites.

  580. By the way,

  581. they weren't supposed to beat the Amorites.

  582. Protection from Balak.

  583. God turned Balaam's curse into blessing.

  584. Sometimes God protects us from dangers

  585. we'll never even know existed.

  586. But the only way that happens

  587. is if we are walking with the Lord.

  588. If we are walking day by day with God.

  589. God wants to deliver us.

  590. God wants to defend us.

  591. But we have to walk with him.

  592. And fourthly,

  593. not only did God choose them,

  594. God delivered them,

  595. God defended them,

  596. and finally God provided for them.

  597. Over and over and over again,

  598. we find for the children of Israel,

  599. God provided for them,

  600. even when they didn't deserve it.

  601. You know what's amazing?

  602. I'm a sinner,

  603. and I don't deserve salvation.

  604. God gave it to me anyways.

  605. I'm a sinner.

  606. I don't deserve to be a part of God's family.

  607. But God provided it for me anyways.

  608. The children of Israel show us

  609. that even God's people

  610. are so oftentimes stuck in sin

  611. and stuck in their own ways,

  612. and God still wants to help them out.

  613. He still does.

  614. And today,

  615. I think it's time that we just remember

  616. how good God's been to us.

  617. As a church family,

  618. if we just gather around

  619. and think of all the blessings,

  620. think of all the times

  621. that God has provided for us

  622. when we did nothing left,

  623. no help, nothing.

  624. Even since I've been

  625. at this church here at Central,

  626. I've seen how much it's grown,

  627. how the Spirit has grown in the Lord.

  628. That's a God thing.

  629. That's no man.

  630. That's no one person.

  631. That is God providing

  632. for Central Baptist Church.

  633. That is God defending

  634. Central Baptist Church.

  635. Let's remember today

  636. what God has done for us.

  637. Remember.

  638. Because when we remember it,

  639. it's a lot harder

  640. to go back into sin.

  641. Because we remember

  642. how much God has done for us

  643. and how much we should be doing

  644. for the Lord.

  645. So first,

  646. I see remembering God's faithfulness.

  647. Secondly,

  648. we need to reject

  649. every rival.

  650. I did not come up with this point

  651. in thoughts of rejecting

  652. the Texas Longhorns,

  653. but we are to reject

  654. every rival.

  655. We are to reject

  656. everything that can get

  657. in our way

  658. from serving God.

  659. It says in verse number 14,

  660. Now therefore,

  661. fear the Lord

  662. and serve Him

  663. in sincerity and in truth

  664. and put away the gods.

  665. Put away the gods.

  666. And ordinarily,

  667. when we look at Scripture

  668. like this in the Old Testament,

  669. we think of,

  670. as in gods,

  671. we think of the golden calf

  672. that the Israelites worshipped.

  673. We think of the golden images

  674. that Aaron built up

  675. for the children of Israel.

  676. We think of these

  677. as gods and idols

  678. and we say,

  679. Well, I would never do that.

  680. Joshua names

  681. three kinds of false gods.

  682. Let's see if we fall

  683. into any of these categories.

  684. The very first point

  685. underneath this

  686. is the gods of the past.

  687. Continuing on in verse 14,

  688. And put away the gods

  689. which your fathers served

  690. on the other side of the flood.

  691. Those past sins,

  692. maybe they were

  693. before you got saved.

  694. Maybe they were

  695. before you got into church.

  696. We're a new creature now.

  697. We shouldn't have to deal with that.

  698. Friend, we're sinners

  699. and we have flesh.

  700. There are still things

  701. that come up

  702. that I remember

  703. before I got saved,

  704. I was living in sin

  705. and that sin,

  706. every now and then,

  707. it'll pop its ugly head up.

  708. Put away those gods.

  709. Put away the idols.

  710. Put away the things

  711. that are just in our lives

  712. that are keeping us

  713. from truly serving

  714. and honoring

  715. and worshiping God.

  716. That's what a God is.

  717. And a God or an idol

  718. is something

  719. that takes the place

  720. of the true God

  721. that we should be worshiping.

  722. So first of all,

  723. what's that sin?

  724. What's that thing

  725. in our lives

  726. that we tried to put away

  727. but every now and then

  728. it'll pop its head up?

  729. Put away those gods.

  730. That's what Joshua says.

  731. Secondly,

  732. this is where

  733. it gets real for us.

  734. Let her be

  735. the gods of the present.

  736. The gods of the present.

  737. It says in verse 15,

  738. and if it seem evil

  739. unto you to serve the Lord,

  740. choose you this day

  741. and me will serve

  742. whether the gods

  743. which your father served

  744. that were on the other side

  745. of the flood

  746. or the gods of the Amorites.

  747. By the way,

  748. right now,

  749. they are living amongst

  750. where the Amorites lived.

  751. That means these gods

  752. are in the camp

  753. right now.

  754. Joshua isn't preaching

  755. against something

  756. that had been

  757. that your fathers did

  758. that was passed.

  759. Now he's getting

  760. into the things

  761. that are a little bit convicting.

  762. The right now.

  763. What god do you got

  764. right now, guys?

  765. Put them away now.

  766. This is a little bit

  767. harder to listen to.

  768. Man,

  769. things that are in my life

  770. that are taking time

  771. away from God,

  772. you say still,

  773. well,

  774. I don't have any gods

  775. or idols.

  776. I'm not worshiping

  777. anything else.

  778. You got a TV?

  779. You got video games?

  780. You got a career?

  781. You got all that stuff?

  782. There are other things, too.

  783. A god is something

  784. that is taking the time

  785. that should be gods

  786. and putting it

  787. into something else.

  788. So oftentimes,

  789. this is how our

  790. Bible reading goes.

  791. And man,

  792. this can be me, too,

  793. if I'm not careful.

  794. Our Bible reading

  795. and time with God

  796. can go something like this.

  797. We have a very busy day

  798. of doing certain things.

  799. When we get home,

  800. we want to unwind,

  801. watch a little bit

  802. of television,

  803. we get in bed that night

  804. and we say,

  805. man,

  806. I didn't get to spend time

  807. with God today.

  808. Hopefully tomorrow.

  809. God gets the end of it.

  810. God gets,

  811. if I have any time left over.

  812. The television,

  813. if that's taking time

  814. away from God,

  815. your priorities

  816. are out of whack.

  817. If certain things

  818. in your life

  819. are taking time

  820. and effort away

  821. from serving

  822. and honoring God,

  823. something is wrong.

  824. And that's what

  825. Joshua says here.

  826. He said,

  827. guys,

  828. you're putting your time

  829. into all these

  830. different things

  831. and you're giving God

  832. a little bit

  833. at the end of the day.

  834. You're giving God

  835. a little bit

  836. if you can find

  837. the time for it.

  838. That's not what God wants.

  839. Those are gods.

  840. Those are idols

  841. that we're using

  842. in place

  843. of who we should be

  844. honoring and worshiping

  845. and serving

  846. in God.

  847. So first,

  848. I saw the gods

  849. of the past.

  850. Then I see the gods

  851. of the present.

  852. And then thirdly,

  853. I see the God

  854. of convenience.

  855. The God

  856. of convenience.

  857. It says

  858. in verse number 15

  859. a little bit earlier,

  860. it says,

  861. and if it seem

  862. evil unto you

  863. to serve the Lord.

  864. This is actually

  865. a pretty big statement

  866. here.

  867. Because Joshua

  868. is not saying

  869. serving the Lord

  870. is evil,

  871. obviously.

  872. I imagine

  873. if I asked anybody

  874. in here today,

  875. who thinks it's evil

  876. to serve the Lord?

  877. Nobody's hands going up.

  878. Because,

  879. of course,

  880. we don't think

  881. it's evil

  882. to serve the Lord.

  883. But man,

  884. sometimes it's

  885. sure not convenient.

  886. When we got a busy day,

  887. when we got things

  888. going on,

  889. sometimes it's easier

  890. just to push it off

  891. a little bit.

  892. Sometimes it's easier

  893. to say,

  894. I'll do that later,

  895. God.

  896. God,

  897. I know you're important,

  898. but not as important

  899. as this right now.

  900. Not as important

  901. as doing all these

  902. other things

  903. that I've got

  904. on my plate.

  905. God,

  906. you'll get there

  907. one day,

  908. but right now,

  909. I've just got a lot

  910. going on.

  911. The God of convenience.

  912. Is it convenient

  913. for you to serve

  914. the Lord?

  915. If the answer

  916. is sometimes,

  917. something is wrong.

  918. We shouldn't be

  919. looking at God

  920. as a convenience.

  921. God should be a part

  922. of our everyday walk.

  923. It shouldn't be

  924. a convenience thing.

  925. We should go to God,

  926. number one.

  927. We should plan

  928. everything else

  929. in our day

  930. around our time

  931. with God,

  932. not the other way around.

  933. And so often times,

  934. it seems like we are

  935. doing it the other way around.

  936. I watched a clip

  937. of a movie

  938. last night

  939. in preparation

  940. for this illustration

  941. so I could remember

  942. it a little bit better.

  943. Anybody ever seen

  944. Facing the Giants?

  945. Facing the Giants.

  946. It's a very good movie.

  947. It's a Christian movie,

  948. actually.

  949. And I went to

  950. Christian school,

  951. so there weren't

  952. a whole lot of movies

  953. we could watch,

  954. so there for a little while.

  955. This was the only movie

  956. we watched,

  957. so that was awesome.

  958. So it did get old

  959. for a little while,

  960. but then I watched

  961. a clip last night

  962. and I want to go

  963. watch the movie now.

  964. But it's a football movie,

  965. but really,

  966. it's not really based

  967. around football.

  968. It is a very

  969. God-centric movie.

  970. And at one point

  971. in this movie,

  972. I'll give you

  973. the background,

  974. there's a high school

  975. coach and he coaches

  976. this high school team

  977. that's not very good.

  978. And if they don't

  979. win this season,

  980. he's probably going

  981. to lose his job.

  982. And then there's

  983. this other team

  984. that is state champions

  985. for like three years

  986. in a row,

  987. way better than everybody.

  988. They never lose.

  989. That's kind of the background

  990. of where we are here.

  991. And this head coach

  992. of this small little team

  993. that can't find themselves

  994. a win,

  995. he comes to one

  996. of his assistant coaches.

  997. His assistant coach

  998. had been called

  999. by that really big school

  1000. to come over

1001. and leave his job there

  1002. and come over

  1003. and be assistant

  1004. at this big school.

  1005. Much more money,

  1006. everything was going

  1007. to work out better,

  1008. but he wasn't going

1009. to tell the head coach

1010. until it was a done deal.

  1011. He was scared to,

  1012. he didn't want

  1013. to hurt his feelings.

  1014. The head coach

1015. goes to the assistant coach

  1016. one evening

  1017. after practice.

  1018. And he asked him

1019. about it and he said,

  1020. yeah,

  1021. I just didn't want

  1022. to tell you,

  1023. I don't really know

1024. what I want to do.

  1025. And the coach

  1026. looked at him

  1027. and said,

  1028. Brady,

  1029. right now you're

  1030. on the fence.

  1031. And right now

  1032. you're not doing

  1033. anybody good

  1034. sitting on the fence.

  1035. Right now you need

1036. to get off of it,

1037. pick which side you're on.

  1038. Because I can't have you,

1039. if you're halfway over there,

  1040. halfway over here,

  1041. go over there.

  1042. I don't need you.

  1043. Don't ride the fence.

  1044. Don't ride the fence.

  1045. We'll be a lot better

  1046. off with you

  1047. out of here

  1048. if you're halfway

  1049. over there.

  1050. Don't ride the fence.

  1051. You got to pick

  1052. God of the world.

1053. At the end of the day,

  1054. that's what Joshua

  1055. says here.

  1056. Joshua gives them

1057. a whole bunch of gods

  1058. that they can pick.

  1059. Like he said,

  1060. make your pick.

  1061. But for me

  1062. and my house,

  1063. we're not riding

  1064. the fence between them.

  1065. We're not picking

  1066. three different gods.

  1067. We're going to pick

  1068. the one true God.

  1069. We are going

  1070. to serve God.

  1071. As for me

  1072. and my house,

  1073. we will serve

  1074. the Lord.

  1075. Don't ride the fence.

  1076. So many Christians

  1077. do that

  1078. because they want

  1079. the benefits.

  1080. They want the benefits

1081. of living in the world

1082. and they want the benefits

1083. that Christ can give them.

1084. You can't live for both.

  1085. You got to pick

  1086. one or the other.

1087. Do you want to serve God

1088. or do you want to serve

  1089. the world?

  1090. Joshua wasn't really

  1091. mean about it

  1092. as you can see

  1093. in verse 15.

  1094. He just said,

  1095. guys,

  1096. it's your choice.

1097. Like I'm going to tell you

1098. what I'm going to do

1099. but at the end of the day,

  1100. you have to pick

1101. what you and your house

  1102. is going to do.

  1103. I can't pick it for you.

  1104. I can remind you

  1105. about all this.

  1106. I can tell you

  1107. about everything

  1108. that's happened

  1109. in your lives

1110. and how God has provided

  1111. for you every step

  1112. of the way

1113. but at the end of the day,

  1114. it's your choice.

1115. Do you want to ride the fence?

1116. Do you want to just sit

1117. over there in the world

1118. or do you want to ride

  1119. with me?

1120. Do you want to get in

  1121. and work

  1122. and walk

  1123. with God?

  1124. Finally,

  1125. I see

  1126. a resolve

  1127. to serve the Lord.

1128. It says in verse number 15

  1129. at the very end,

  1130. but as for me

  1131. and my house,

  1132. we will serve

  1133. the Lord.

1134. This is one of the greatest

  1135. scripture declarations

  1136. in the Bible.

  1137. Joshua was not hesitant

  1138. about saying

  1139. what his plan was.

  1140. He didn't see

  1141. what everybody else

  1142. was choosing

  1143. and then he chose.

  1144. He said,

  1145. I don't care

  1146. what anybody else does.

  1147. We're in a room

  1148. of 150,

  1149. 170 people.

1150. Our job isn't to look

  1151. and see what everybody

  1152. else is doing.

1153. Our job is to say,

  1154. I don't care

  1155. what they do.

  1156. I don't care

1157. what my best friends do.

  1158. I am going

  1159. to serve

  1160. the Lord.

1161. And let me tell you,

  1162. this is,

  1163. I don't ordinarily do this.

1164. This is for the men

  1165. in the room.

  1166. Men,

  1167. we need

  1168. to be the reason

  1169. our household

  1170. stands

  1171. for the Lord.

1172. We should be the ones

  1173. that are declaring

  1174. it's never a question.

1175. My parents always told me

  1176. growing up,

  1177. I never want it

  1178. to be a question

  1179. to you

  1180. whether we're

1181. going to go to church

  1182. or not,

  1183. whether we're

  1184. going to read

1185. our Bible as a family.

  1186. I never want that

  1187. to be a question

  1188. for you.

  1189. I just want you

  1190. to know

  1191. that's our job

  1192. as men

  1193. to lead our household

  1194. so that our kids,

  1195. they grow up

  1196. knowing we serve God.

  1197. It's never a question

  1198. to them.

1199. They know for a fact

  1200. who we serve.

  1201. Our wives

  1202. follow us

  1203. and are able

  1204. to help

  1205. and direct

  1206. our children

  1207. to serve the Lord,

  1208. but it's our job

  1209. as men

  1210. to make sure

  1211. our household

  1212. is standing

  1213. on the strong

  1214. foundation of the Lord.

  1215. First,

  1216. under this point,

  1217. as I'm getting

  1218. close to closing,

  1219. it was a personal

  1220. decision.

  1221. I said the men

  1222. just a moment ago,

  1223. but right now

  1224. it is everybody's choice.

  1225. It is a personal

  1226. decision

  1227. to follow God.

  1228. Joshua,

  1229. before he could get

  1230. to his household,

  1231. he had to make

  1232. the decision

  1233. that he was going

  1234. to walk for God.

  1235. He had to make

  1236. the decision himself.

  1237. Growing up in school,

  1238. I loved group

  1239. projects,

  1240. because if we failed,

  1241. we were going

  1242. to fail together.

  1243. I didn't like

  1244. failing by myself,

  1245. so I was decent

  1246. in school,

  1247. but if we were

  1248. going to do bad,

  1249. at least somebody

  1250. else was going

  1251. to go down

  1252. with me.

  1253. That's the kind

  1254. of friend I was.

  1255. I wanted my best

  1256. friends with me,

1257. so if we did do bad,

  1258. it was their fault

  1259. too,

  1260. not just mine.

1261. Let me just tell you,

  1262. this isn't a group

  1263. project this morning.

  1264. You can't look over

  1265. and say,

  1266. hey,

  1267. are you going

  1268. to follow the Lord?

  1269. Hey,

  1270. are you going

  1271. to stand firm

  1272. for the Lord today?

1273. I'll do it if you do it.

  1274. It's a personal decision.

1275. It has to be made

1276. by each and every one

  1277. of us.

1278. And let me just tell you,

  1279. if you say,

  1280. well,

  1281. I'm going to put

  1282. this decision

  1283. off a little bit,

  1284. you've already made one.

1285. If you want to try

  1286. to ride the fence

  1287. and say,

  1288. I'll stand firm

1289. for the Lord one day,

  1290. but right now,

  1291. it's not going

  1292. to work for me.

  1293. That's the God

  1294. of convenience.

  1295. Right now,

  1296. I've got stuff

  1297. going on,

  1298. the gods

  1299. of the presence,

  1300. right now,

  1301. we need to make

  1302. a decision.

  1303. I love,

  1304. I enjoy

  1305. when I'm able

  1306. to close a sermon

  1307. with a firm decision,

  1308. like what you're going

  1309. to do,

  1310. like a firm calling.

  1311. Today,

  1312. the only decision

  1313. that it is,

  1314. is who you're going

  1315. to choose.

  1316. It's very,

  1317. very simple.

  1318. The most important

  1319. decisions normally

  1320. are pretty simple,

  1321. aren't they?

  1322. we make decisions

  1323. every single day.

  1324. We make decisions

  1325. to brush our teeth.

  1326. We make decisions

  1327. to go to sleep

  1328. at night.

  1329. We make decisions

  1330. all day long,

1331. but this is the one

  1332. that's the most important.

  1333. A lot of us

  1334. are living

  1335. our day-to-day lives,

  1336. and I've never really

  1337. sat down and thought

  1338. about it and made

  1339. that decision,

  1340. but today,

  1341. God's calling you

  1342. to make one.

  1343. Today,

  1344. as we leave

  1345. the doors today,

  1346. there are going

  1347. to be two kinds

  1348. of people,

  1349. ones that determined

  1350. to follow God

  1351. with them

  1352. in their household

  1353. today,

  1354. and the ones

  1355. who decided

  1356. not to make

  1357. a decision

  1358. that decided

  1359. to follow the world.

  1360. There's no in-between

  1361. today.

  1362. That's it.

  1363. There's no in-between.

  1364. There's no wondering

  1365. who we are,

  1366. wondering what happened,

  1367. wondering what we did,

  1368. and by the way,

  1369. finally,

  1370. it was a permanent

  1371. decision.

  1372. If you're signing up

  1373. and determining

  1374. you and your household

  1375. are going to follow

  1376. God today,

1377. let me just tell you,

  1378. it doesn't change

  1379. in a week.

  1380. It doesn't change

  1381. in a month

  1382. when things get hard.

  1383. It doesn't change

  1384. in a year.

  1385. It doesn't change

  1386. in ten years.

  1387. This is a forever

  1388. decision.

  1389. So,

  1390. like Joshua says,

  1391. if you don't want

  1392. to make it,

  1393. don't.

  1394. Joshua gave them

  1395. the choice.

  1396. God gave you

  1397. the choice.

  1398. God's not forcing

  1399. anybody into it,

  1400. but today,

  1401. I want to make

  1402. the decision

  1403. and say,

1404. for me and my house,

  1405. we're going

  1406. to serve the Lord,

  1407. and I implore

  1408. you today,

  1409. whether it's

  1410. at the altar,

  1411. whether it's

  1412. at your seat,

  1413. make a decision

  1414. for the Lord today.

  1415. An easy one.

  1416. Decide if you're

  1417. going to follow him

  1418. and if you're

  1419. going to lead

  1420. your household

  1421. into following him

  1422. as well.

  1423. Go ahead and bow

  1424. your heads.

  1425. away.

  1426. may may may may

  1427. may may may may

  1428. may may may may

1429. may may may may may
