  3. Word of God. Welcome to Life Group. In this lesson,

  4. we'll be looking at Romans chapters 12 through

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  5. 13, verse 7. Romans 1 through 11 has taught us

  6. what God has done for us through Jesus. But here

  7. in Romans 12, Paul begins to show us what God

  8. wants to do through us. Paul shifts from doctrine

  9. to daily life. And he starts with one big idea.

  10. Because of God's mercy, the only logical response

  11. is to give Him our lives. So let's begin verse

  12. 1. And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead

  13. with you to give your bodies to God because of

  14. all He has done for you. Let them be a living

  15. and holy sacrifice, the kind he will find acceptable.

  16. This is truly the way to worship him. Here in

  17. these verses, Paul is telling us to recognize

  18. and respond to all that God has done, to remember

  19. that he forgave us, he adopted us, he gave us

  20. the Spirit, he never leaves us, and in light

  21. of all these things, we need to give our bodies

  22. to God. This idea of sacrifice, it reminds us

  23. of the altar. But instead of something being

  24. dead placed on the altar, God wants now a living

  25. sacrifice. In this sense, we keep coming back.

  26. We keep surrendering ourselves to God. We say,

  27. Lord, I am yours. Because this is the reasonable

  28. response, right? The giver of life deserves that

  29. life in return. Picking up in verse 2. Don't

  30. copy the behavior and customs of this world,

  31. but let God transform you into a new person by

  32. changing the way you think. Then you will learn

  33. to know God's will for you, which is good and

  34. pleasing and perfect. It's important to realize

  35. that the world is always trying to shape us,

  36. trying to tell us what to think, trying to tell

  37. us how we should think. Culture says, think like

  38. us, value what we value and define your life

  39. our way. But here Paul is saying, don't be pressed

  40. into that mold. Don't conform to it. Don't copy

  41. it even. Instead, we are transformed. He's saying,

  42. be transformed. How? Because it doesn't start

  43. with your behavior and what you do. Paul is saying

  44. real transformation starts with how you think.

  45. Many believers live from their feelings, unfortunately.

  46. Like, how do I feel today? And that determines

  47. how my day is going to go. Or what am I do? You

  48. know, we live from what we do. What do I need

  49. to do? But God says, learn the truth. my truth

  50. in the word, study my word, and then let this,

  51. let him, by spending time in his word, change

  52. how we think. And as our minds renew, our lives

  53. change. We don't just learn God's will, but we

  54. begin to live God's will and look more and more

  55. like him each and every day. Verse 3. Because

  56. of the privilege and authority God has given

  57. me, I give each of you this warning. Don't think

  58. you are better than you really are. Be honest

  59. in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves

  60. by the faith God has given us. Before Paul talks

  61. about spiritual gifts, he talks about pride.

  62. Because gifts often make people proud if they

  63. forget all gifts are from God. Gifts don't equal

  64. maturity. Gifts are ultimately for serving others.

  65. They're not for elevating ourselves. Verse 4.

  66. Just as our bodies have many parts, and each

  67. part has a special function, so it is with Christ's

  68. body. We are many parts of one body, and we all

  69. belong to each other. Here Paul is telling us

  70. that we belong to Christ, and we belong to one

  71. another. But it is important to know that unity

  72. doesn't mean sameness. Each one of us have different

  73. gifts, different personalities, and different

  74. roles in the kingdom of God. But we are one body.

  75. And here, we need each other. The Bible identifies

  76. spiritual gifts that are given to believers in

  77. 1 Corinthians 12 and in Romans 12. Let's take

  78. a look at the seven gifts listed in Romans, starting

  79. with verse 6. In His grace, God has given us

  80. different gifts for doing certain things well.

  81. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy,

  82. Speak out with as much faith as God has given

  83. you. If your gift is serving others, serve them

  84. well. If you are a teacher, teach well. Now,

  85. let's take a look at the first gift mentioned

  86. is prophecy. And we're not going to make prophecy

  87. spooky. Prophecy is simply hearing from God and

  88. then saying what God wants you to say. whether

  89. that be to one person or a group of people or

  90. even to a nation we see throughout Scripture.

  91. So prophecy is a spiritual gift, and prophecy

  92. is listed in both lists here in Romans 12 and

  93. in 1 Corinthians 12. So when we have the gift

  94. to prophesy, we need to speak God's truth faithfully.

  95. Say what He tells us to say. And it will always

  96. be biblically what we say will always line up

  97. with God's word. The second gift is serving others

  98. or ministry. This is talking about meeting practical

  99. needs. And we do this quietly and faithfully.

  100. Third gift mentioned is teaching. It is also

  101. on both lists. So what is teaching? What does

  102. it come down to? Well, it really just comes down

  103. to helping people understand God's Word by studying

  104. and teaching and being faithful in that gift

  105. of teaching. Let's continue in verse 8. If your

  106. gift is to encourage others, be encouraging.

  107. If it is giving, give generously. If God has

  108. given you leadership ability, take the responsibility

  109. seriously. And if you have a gift of showing

  110. kindness to others, do it gladly. So let's continue

  111. breaking down the list. The first one is exhortation.

  112. Have you met someone before who was just always

  113. encouraging? This is a person who probably has

  114. that spiritual gift of encouragement. encouraging

  115. people and just lifting people, not being a load

  116. to others, but being a lift to others. And especially

  117. encouraging people to live out what they know

  118. according to God's word. The next spiritual gift

  119. is giving. And this is resourcing the work of

  120. God in the earth and doing it generously and

  121. joyfully. I met a man one time who told me that

  122. his goal in his business was to be so successful

  123. in business that he could give away to ministry

  124. 90 % of his income and be able to live on 10%.

  125. To have a heart like that, I believe we could

  126. agree that he had the spiritual gift of giving

  127. because that brought him great joy. The next

  128. gift is leading or administration. This is a

  129. spiritual gift to help guide other people and

  130. to lead other people in ministry. The next gift

  131. is showing mercy or showing kindness. This is

  132. a spiritual gift of caring for hurting people

  133. with joy, not resentment or duty, but... That

  134. just brings you the greatest joy is helping someone

  135. who is going through a difficult situation. And

  136. in these seven gifts, we need to realize that

  137. whatever God has given us, we don't need to bury

  138. it. We need to use it. And we need to operate

  139. in these gifts with the right heart always. Now,

  140. talking about these gifts. Every one of us, I

  141. believe, can prophesy. We can speak what God

  142. has spoken to us and share with other people.

  143. We can all serve. We can all teach. We can all

  144. encourage. We can all give. We can all lead.

  145. We can all care for other people who are hurting.

  146. And I believe we should be involved in all of

  147. these things. Everyone should be involved in

  148. all of these things. But this list lets us know

  149. that God gives special gifts and anointings to

  150. people in different areas. You may say, well,

  151. how could I know what gift God has given me?

  152. Well, gifts are often recognized through having

  153. a deep concern in one or another area of ministry

  154. or a passion for a different area of ministry.

  155. So those are ways that we can recognize the gifts

  156. that God has given us. Let's pick up with verse

  157. 9. Don't just pretend to love others. Really

  158. love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to

  159. what is good. Love each other with genuine affection

  160. and take delight in honoring each other. Here,

  161. the Bible tells us that we don't need to pretend

  162. and don't just put on our church face and act

  163. like we're concerned and we love. No fake smiles.

  164. As followers of Christ, we need to walk in real

  165. love. Real love, kindness, and affection. But

  166. right in the middle of talking about this love,

  167. the Bible says, hate what is wrong. Now, as followers

  168. of Christ, we don't approve of sin. We should

  169. never approve of sin. And we should never excuse

  170. sin. But in the midst of that, we need to remember

  171. that we should never be mean or hateful towards

  172. another person. Our society today kind of has

  173. the idea that disagreement, if you disagree with

  174. someone over what is wrong or what is right,

  175. then that is hate. But that's just not true.

  176. Disagreement is not hate. You see, a follower

  177. of Christ can't embrace sin and approve of sin

  178. or excuse sin because there's a problem with

  179. sin. Sin always harms those who are trapped in

  180. it. So we should never approve of that. We need

  181. to cling to what honors God as we love other

  182. people. Picking up with verse 11. Never be lazy,

  183. but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.

  184. There's no laziness in serving Jesus. We need

  185. to stay spiritually focused in our lives. We

  186. need to stay passionate for the things of God.

  187. And when we talk about serving and not being

  188. lazy, We can also understand that serving God

  189. also looks like serving other people. And when

  190. I thought about that and read this verse, I thought

  191. about John chapter 13. The night before Jesus

    John 13 chapter mention

  192. was crucified, he gathered together with his

  193. disciples in the upper room. And normally when

  194. someone came into the house, someone volunteered.

  195. to be at the door with a bowl and a towel and

  196. wash the feet of the guests coming into the house.

  197. But John 13 says that that did not happen. I

  198. mean, that was normal, customary, just serving

  199. each other. Someone would do that. And if there

  200. were servants in the house, it was always the

  201. lowest servant. But the Bible tells us that in

  202. the middle of the dinner, Jesus got up, wrapped

  203. a towel around his waist, took a bowl of water

  204. and went around and washed the disciples' feet.

  205. See, who knows what was going through their minds.

  206. Maybe they thought, well, I'm not the lowest

  207. here, so I shouldn't be washing the feet, right?

  208. But when Jesus stooped down to wash the feet,

  209. the Creator was stooping down to wash the feet

  210. of His creation. Jesus modeled what it means

  211. to serve, to be a servant. And then he goes on

  212. to say that, you know, the greatest person in

  213. the kingdom of God is those who serve. So we

  214. should never be lazy in serving Jesus and in

  215. serving each other. As a matter of fact, we need

  216. to be the first to take up the towel. We need

  217. to attempt to out serve one another. No, you're

  218. not going to serve more than me. I'm going to

  219. serve because we're not lazy. in serving God.

  220. Picking up in verse 12, rejoice in our confident

  221. hope, be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.

  222. Our hope, our confident expectation, is in Jesus

  223. and all his promises. And here Paul is saying

  224. that if we keep our eyes on him, that this gives

  225. us reason to get happy, even in the hardest of

  226. seasons. You see, difficult times require waiting

  227. on hope's assurances. This is what true, genuine,

  228. godly patience is and what Paul is telling us

  229. here. And instead of filling this time in between

  230. with worry, we should fill our waiting with prayer.

  231. We should always pray. Verse 13, when God's people

  232. are in need, be ready to help them. Always be

  233. eager to practice hospitality. It's important

  234. to realize here that he's talking about God's

  235. people and what God's people are called to do

  236. with one another. And we are called to be ready

  237. in season. We should always be ready to help

  238. one another. We should be always ready to open

  239. our doors, to share our table and our supply

  240. with one another. Godly hospitality is not just,

  241. oh, I'll pray for you, but it's, I will help

  242. you. It is love in action towards one another.

  243. Verse 14, bless those who persecute you. Don't

  244. curse them. Pray that God will bless them. How

  245. dramatically different. Is this compared to how

  246. our culture says that we should respond when

  247. someone unjustly or unfairly treats us? And all

  248. this is really impossible, like what Paul is

  249. talking about. It's all impossible without the

  250. infilling of the Holy Spirit and looking to him.

  251. Because where the world cries to avenge, Jesus

  252. calls us and his children to bless. We don't

  253. curse others. We don't tear others down. Here,

  254. we're being told that we need, and our obligation

  255. is to pray for them. Verse 15. Be happy with

  256. those who are happy, and weep with those who

  257. weep. Live in harmony with each other. Don't

  258. be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary

  259. people, and don't think you know it all. How

  260. many of you have been around somebody who just

  261. has that air of, I know everything, right? But

  262. God's people are not to act like that. We need

  263. to genuinely care about other people's stories,

  264. care about other people's lives and what's going

  265. on. Everything is not a competition. We shouldn't

  266. have to compete for the promotion and compare

  267. our lives to the Joneses down the street. We

  268. really need to genuinely celebrate others' wins,

  269. and we need to stand with them in times of loss

  270. and in seasons of hurt. Verse 17. Never pay back

  271. evil with more evil. Do things in such a way

  272. that everyone can see you are honorable. Do all

  273. that you can to live in peace with everyone.

  274. Dear friends, Never take revenge. Leave that

  275. to the righteous anger of God. For the scriptures

  276. say, I will take revenge. I will pay them back,

  277. says the Lord. It's important that we trust God

  278. with all injustice. We know that God sees and

  279. God knows and he promises to handle judgment.

  280. Sometimes peace with others isn't always in our

  281. control, but what is our responsibility is to

  282. not create conflict. Verse 20 Instead, if your

  283. enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty,

  284. give them something to drink. In doing this,

  285. you will heap burning coals of shame on their

  286. heads. Here, Paul is teaching us that evil is

  287. defeated when we respond with Christlike goodness.

  288. Kindness, therefore, softens others' hearts.

  289. Sometimes kindness even convicts. Sometimes it

  290. will even win back a former enemy. But it's important

  291. to realize that the world's ideal of killing

  292. someone with kindness is not God's way. God's

  293. way is so much far above that mindset. It's the

  294. heart of God's way is still love. We're not seeking

  295. harm to someone else. We're seeking to genuinely

  296. respond as God would respond, and that would

  297. be to love one another as he loved us. despite

  298. all the things that we've done against him, right?

  299. He still loved us. And that's how we're supposed

  300. to treat and carry our lives and in every arena

  301. in our dealings with other people who seek to

  302. even do us harm and do us wrong. Verse 21, don't

  303. let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing

  304. good. Here, Paul is saying that we must not give

  305. in to the lure of pride, of hate, and now revenge.

  306. This is not the way of Christ. Instead, though,

  307. we must stay focused on copying his will and

  308. his ways. So Romans 12, it's painted this picture

  309. of a transformed life as one that is surrendered

  310. to God. is one that thinks differently than the

  311. world. It walks humbly. It serves faithfully.

  312. It loves sincerely, responds graciously, and

  313. trusts God with justice. Let's pick up in Romans

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  314. chapter 13, starting with verse 1. Everyone must

  315. submit to governing authorities. For all authority,

  316. comes from God. And those in positions of authority

  317. have been placed there by God. So anyone who

  318. rebels against authority is rebelling against

  319. what God has instituted, and they will be punished.

  320. Now, when we read this verse, this is not only

  321. for the good Christians or the ones who agree

  322. with the government at the time. It says everyone.

  323. Christians shouldn't live with rebellious attitudes.

  324. We aren't called to chaos. See, we live under

  325. authority, and a Christian knows what it means

  326. to live under authority. And we do it with humility.

  327. And just to remind you, during this time, when

  328. Roman soldiers would come and tell you to carry

  329. their gear, you had to. It was a law. You had

  330. to carry... They're gear for a mile. And if,

  331. you know, Jesus, the word of God says, don't

  332. just carry it one mile, carry it two. That's

  333. the way Christians should act. And that's the

  334. attitude that we should have as followers of

  335. Christ. Now, this doesn't mean that every leader

  336. is godly. Here's what it does mean. God allows

  337. leaders to rise. and God removes leaders. God

  338. works through authority, sometimes even through

  339. imperfect authority. As we look through the Old

  340. Testament, God gave leaders to bless the nation,

  341. but he also allowed other leaders to correct

  342. a nation and lead people back to him. When we

  343. constantly fight against authority just because

  344. we don't like it, we're not just resisting people.

  345. We're resisting what God set up. But there's

  346. a balance. If government ever tells us to do

  347. something that clearly disobeys God, then Acts

  348. 4 .19 tells us we must obey God rather than men.

  349. Picking up with verse 3. For the authorities

  350. do not strike fear in people who are doing right,

  351. but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like

  352. to live without fear of the authorities? Do what

  353. is right, and they will honor you. You see, in

  354. God's design, government is meant to basically

  355. do three things. To protect people. To punish

  356. wrong. and to keep order in society. And if we're

  357. living right, we don't have to live in fear.

  358. If we're following the rules of law, we don't

  359. have to be afraid. Christians should be the kind

  360. of people who tell the truth, respect others,

  361. live peaceful lives, and make their communities

  362. better. Picking up with verse 4. The authorities

  363. are God's servants sent for your good. But if

  364. you're doing wrong, of course you should be afraid,

  365. for they have the power to punish you. They are

  366. God's servants sent for the very purpose of punishing

  367. those who do what is wrong. So you must submit

  368. to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also

  369. to keep a clear conscience. This verse tells

  370. us that government officials are servants. They're

  371. servants of the people. Their authority, however,

  372. is borrowed. Because everyone who has a position

  373. of authority in this world is ultimately going

  374. to answer to God for how they operated in that

  375. authority. God has given government the right

  376. to punish evil and to protect society. And when

  377. government refuses to punish evil, they stop

  378. doing what God designed them to do. We don't

  379. obey and follow the law just because we're scared

  380. of getting in trouble. We obey because it honors

  381. God. It keeps our conscience clear. It reflects

  382. Christ well. We obey out of faith, not out of

  383. fear. Picking up with verse 6. Pay your taxes

  384. too, for the same reasons. For government workers

  385. need to be paid. They are serving God in what

  386. they do. Give to everyone what you owe them.

  387. Pay your taxes and government fees to those who

  388. collect them and give respect and honor to those

  389. who are in authority. I don't know if this is

  390. an exciting verse or not, but it says that we

  391. need to pay our taxes. We need to pay what we

  392. owe. Why do we pay? Because government workers

  393. serve the public. Order and structure costs something.

  394. God uses systems to maintain society. And sometimes

  395. we may not love the process, but we're supposed

  396. to live honestly before God. Give people what

  397. they're due. If they're due money, give them

  398. money. Just like Jesus said, give to Caesar what

  399. is Caesar's and give to God what is God's. So

  400. if we owe money, that's what we need to do is

  401. give the money that is owed. We also need to

  402. give the respect that is due when it's appropriate.

  403. And we are to honor when it is due. When someone

  404. holds a position that God has allowed, we need

  405. to treat them with honor. Now, we don't worship

  406. our leaders, even though some people can be accused

  407. of that, right? We're not supposed to worship

  408. our leaders when we think they're a good leader.

  409. They shouldn't be worshipped. Just like we shouldn't

  410. insult everyone we disagree with. If we don't

  411. like our leader, we shouldn't go around insulting

  412. them as followers of Christ. We need to live

  413. differently because our ultimate loyalty is to

  414. Christ. Now, these verses aren't about trusting

  415. every politician. It's about trusting God more

  416. than politics. So, in trusting God more than

  417. politics, we respect authority, we obey when

  418. we can, we refuse only when obedience would mean

  419. disobeying God, we pray for our leaders, and

  420. we live with integrity. Ultimately, governments...

  421. The governments of this world, they rise and

  422. they fall. But Jesus is King forever. Thank you

  424. to build your faith and transform your life.
