  1. Welcome to Life Group. We invite you to join

  2. us in this verse -by -verse study through the

  3. Word of God. In today's Life Group, we'll be

  4. looking at Romans chapters 15 through 16. As

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  5. we have seen, Romans is one of the deepest theological

  6. letters ever written. Paul has explained the

  7. doctrines of sin, grace, justification, the Spirit,

  8. Israel, transformation, unity, and Christian

  9. living. And in these final chapters, Paul shows

  10. us what all this theology should produce. A church,

  11. a people that build each other up, that walk

  12. in unity, protect truth, and center on the gospel.

  13. These chapters are very practical, as we'll see.

  14. They answer questions like, what does spiritual

  15. maturity look like? How should strong believers

  16. treat weaker ones? What kind of people are a

  17. healthy church? How do we guard against division?

  18. And what ultimately stabilizes believers? So

  19. let's begin with verse 1. things like this. We

  20. must not just please ourselves. We should help

  21. others do what is right and build them up in

  22. the Lord. So Paul is saying here that if you

  23. are strong, your strength is not just for yourself.

  24. It is for serving others. The phrase being considerate

  25. means more than just tolerating someone. He shows

  26. us that it means lifting them, supporting them,

  27. helping hold them up. Our culture says something

  28. like, look out for yourself, protect your happiness,

  29. and do what only feels right for you. But Paul

  30. is showing us a different picture. He's pointing

  31. us in the opposite direction. He's saying and

  32. telling us to live for the spiritual good of

  33. others. We need to ask ourselves, do my choices

  34. build others up or just serve my preferences?

  35. Because one of Satan's oldest strategies is to

  36. convince believers to tear each other down. But

  37. true mature believers are builders. They choose

  38. to build each other up. They intentionally build

  39. one another up. Verse 3. For even Christ didn't

  40. live to please himself. As the scriptures say,

  41. The insults of those who insult you, O God, have

  42. fallen on me. Such things were written in the

  43. scriptures long ago to teach us. And the scriptures

  44. give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently

  45. for God's promises to be fulfilled. Paul here

  46. is showing us that if we ever wonder what this

  47. kind of life looks like, that we need to look

  48. at Jesus. For Jesus is our example. He absorbed

  49. rejection. He dismissed offense. He endured misunderstanding.

  50. Instead of vindicating himself, Jesus trusted

  51. the Father. This is often where you and I struggle.

  52. we often want to defend ourselves. But Jesus

  53. shows us how trusting God by resting on the promise

  54. that He vindicates His people. When we walk through

  55. difficult seasons, Scripture then stabilizes

  56. our hearts. And it reminds us that obedience

  57. is always worth it, even when it's hard. Picking

  58. up with verse 5. May God, who gives this patience

  59. and encouragement, help you to live in complete

  60. harmony with each other as is fitting for followers

  61. of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together

  62. with one voice giving praise and glory to God,

  63. the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Here we

  64. see that unity glorifies God. Paul now turns

  65. this into a prayer. Unity is not something we

  66. manufacture through personality or preference.

  67. It is something God produces in surrendered hearts.

  68. Notice that patience is the character of God.

  69. God is patient with his people, patient with

  70. his plans, patient with our growth. And since

  71. God is patient, and we are in him, his patience

  72. equips us to be patient with each other. What

  73. is the result of this patience? Unity and worship.

  74. Actually, unity amplifies our worship. When a

  75. church walks together in patience, unity, and

  76. real love for one another, God is glorified.

  77. Picking up with verse 7. Therefore, accept each

  78. other just as Christ has accepted you, so that

  79. God will be given glory. Remember that Christ

  80. came as a servant to the Jews to show that God

  81. is true to the promises he made to their ancestors.

  82. He also came that the Gentiles might give glory

  83. to God for his mercies to them. That is what

  84. the psalmist meant when he wrote, For this I

  85. will praise you among the Gentiles. I will sing

  86. praises to your name. And in another place it

  87. is written, Rejoice with his people, you Gentiles.

  88. And yet again, Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles.

  89. Praise him, all you people of the earth. And

  90. in another place, Isaiah said, The heir to David's

  91. throne will come. and he will rule over the Gentiles.

  92. They will place their hope on him. I pray that

  93. God, the source of hope, will fill you completely

  94. with joy and peace because you trust in him.

  95. Then you will overflow with confident hope through

  96. the power of the Holy Spirit. Here we are instructed

  97. to receive others. The way Christ received us.

  98. Think about how Jesus received you. He didn't

  99. receive you because you were flawless or because

  100. you had everything figured out. He received you

  101. by grace. Knowing your faults and committed himself

  102. to your growth. We're reminded again to don't

  103. make secondary issues ground. Grounds for rejection

  104. of people. In the early church, one of the biggest

  105. divides was between Jews and Gentiles. Jesus

  106. became a servant to Israel to fulfill God's promises,

  107. and God always intended for the Gentiles to glorify

  108. him for his mercy. Paul quotes multiple Old Testament

  109. passages to show that this was always. Part of

  110. God's plan. The nations praising him together.

  111. Instead of being divided, they should be united

  112. in worship. Then comes one of the most beautiful

  113. blessings in all the New Testament. Now may the

  114. God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in

  115. believing that you may abound in hope by the

  116. power of the Holy Spirit. Notice the progression

  117. here. Believing comes first, and believing lends

  118. to joy and peace, which leads to overflowing

  119. hope, and that is a result of being empowered

  120. by the Spirit. The Christian life is not sustained

  121. by striving on our part, but by trusting. Picking

  122. up with verse 14. I am fully convinced, my dear

  123. brothers and sisters, that you are full of goodness.

  124. You know these things so well you can teach each

  125. other all about them. Even so, I have been bold

  126. enough to write about some of these points, knowing

  127. that all you need is this reminder. For by God's

  128. grace, I am a special messenger from Christ Jesus

  129. to you Gentiles. I bring you the good news so

  130. that I might present you as an acceptable offering

  131. to God made holy by the Holy Spirit. Here we

  132. see Paul explaining his ministry. He is reassuring

  133. the readers. He is not correcting them as an

  134. immature church. He is reminding a capable one.

  135. Sometimes believers don't need new information.

  136. They need encouragement to live what they already

  137. know. Paul describes his calling as being a minister

  138. to the Gentiles. He seeks his work as presenting

  139. people to God like an offering, sanctified by

  140. the Holy Spirit. This is a wonderful picture,

  141. right? People aren't just projects in ministry.

  142. They are offerings to God. Picking up with verse

  143. 17. So I have reason to be enthusiastic about

  144. all Christ Jesus has done through me in my service

  145. to God. Yet I dare not boast about anything except

  146. what Christ has done through me. bringing the

  147. Gentiles to God by my message and by the way

  148. I worked among them. They were convinced by the

  149. power of miraculous signs and wonders and by

  150. the power of God's Spirit. In this way, I have

  151. fully presented the good news of Christ from

  152. Jerusalem all the way to Illuricon. Here, Paul

  153. is not boasting in himself. He is celebrating

  154. what Christ has accomplished through him. Ultimately,

  155. all lasting fruit is the work of God. Paul's

  156. ministry involved both word and deed, accompanied

  157. by the power and demonstration of the Holy Spirit.

  158. For Paul, preaching the gospel included the power

  159. of God on display. with evidence of miracles,

  160. signs, wonders, and changed lives. Verse 20.

  161. My ambition has always been to preach the good

  162. news where the name of Christ has never been

  163. heard, rather than where a church has already

  164. been started by someone else. I have been following

  165. the plan spoken of in the scriptures where it

  166. says, Those who have never been told about him

  167. will see, and those who have never heard of him

  168. will understand. In fact, my visit to you has

  169. been delayed so long because I have been preaching

  170. in these places. But now, I have finished my

  171. work in these regions, and after all these long

  172. years of waiting, I am eager to visit you. I

  173. am planning to go to Spain, and when I do, I

  174. will stop off in Rome. And after I have enjoyed

  175. your fellowship for a little while, you can provide

  176. for my journey. We can see here that Paul was

  177. a pioneer, not because building on someone else's

  178. work is wrong, but because there was still so

  179. many who had never heard, and he was so passionate

  180. about it. And really, when we think about it,

  181. every healthy church should carry this same passion

  182. that Paul had. We need to ask ourselves, who

  183. still needs to hear? And where is our frontier?

  184. It's clear that Paul hoped to visit Rome on his

  185. way to Spain, and he likely saw Rome as a central

  186. base for Western missions in the future. But

  187. here we learn something important, that we make

  188. plans, but God directs our paths. Paul eventually

  189. reached Rome, but as a prisoner. But we know

  190. that even prison by the Holy Spirit for Paul

  191. became a new frontier to spread the gospel. This

  192. is such a perfect reminder that God's ways are

  193. not limited to our ability, and His ways are

  194. not confined to our travel plans. Verse 25, But

  195. before I come, I must go to Jerusalem to take

  196. a gift to the believers there. For you see, the

  197. believers in Macedonia and Achaia have eagerly

  198. taken up an offering for the poor among the believers

  199. in Jerusalem. They were glad to do this because

  200. they feel they owe a real debt to them. Since

  201. the Gentiles received the spiritual blessings

  202. of the good news from the believers in Jerusalem,

  203. they feel the least that they can do in return

  204. is to help them financially. As soon as I have

  205. delivered this money and completed this good

  206. deed of theirs, I will come to see you on my

  207. way to Spain. And I am sure that when I come,

  208. Christ will richly bless our time together. Paul

  209. was delivering a financial offering from Gentile

  210. churches to believers in Jerusalem. And he tells

  211. us his reasoning here, and it's very simple,

  212. that if the Gentiles benefited spiritually from

  213. the Jewish believers, that it is only right that

  214. they supported them materially with their finances.

  215. Picking up in verse 30. Dear brothers and sisters,

  216. I urge you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

  217. to join in my struggle by praying to God for

  218. me. Do this because of your love for me, given

  219. to you by the Holy Spirit. Pray that I will be

  220. rescued from those in Judea who refuse to obey

  221. God. Pray also that the believers there will

  222. be willing to accept the donation I am taking

  223. to Jerusalem. Then, by the will of God, I will

  224. be able to come to you with a joyful heart and

  225. will be an encouragement to each other. And now,

  226. may God, who gives us his peace, be with you

  227. all. Amen. In these verses, Paul makes this urgent

  228. appeal. He says, join me in my struggle by praying.

  229. The phrase literally means, let's agonize together

  230. with me. And Paul is, he's inviting the believers

  231. to join him in the battle through prayer, through

  232. intercessory prayer. Even the apostle Paul here,

  233. he knew he could not do ministry alone. He's

  234. asking for prayer for protection from unbelievers,

  235. acceptance. among the saints in joyful fellowship.

  236. And this reminds us of a very important lesson

  237. and something that's very vital, that spiritual

  238. leaders are sustained by praying people, and

  239. no one is beyond needing prayer. Now let's move

  240. to Romans chapter 16. Here we see that the gospel

    Romans 16 chapter mention

  241. creates a family. Paul now greets a long list

  242. of believers, and this is more important than

  243. it might seem. Romans was not written to theologians,

  244. it was written to real people, ordinary believers

  245. who loved Jesus. Starting with verse 1, I commend

  246. to you our sister Phobie, who is a deacon in

  247. the church of Cancria. Welcome her in the Lord

  248. as one who is worthy of honor among God's people.

  249. Help her in whatever she needs, for she has been

  250. helpful to so many and especially to me. Give

  251. my greetings to Priscilla and Aquila, my co -workers

  252. in the ministry of Christ Jesus. In fact, they

  253. once risked their lives for me. I am thankful

  254. to them. and so are all the Gentile churches.

  255. Also give my greetings to the church that meets

  256. in their home. Greet my dear friend, Epinatus.

  257. He was the first person from the province of

  258. Asia to become a follower of Christ. Give my

  259. greetings to Mary, who has worked so hard for

  260. your benefit. Greet Andronicus and Junia, my

  261. fellow Jews. who were in prison with me. They

  262. are highly respected among the apostles and became

  263. followers of Christ before I did. Greet Amphilantus,

  264. my dear friend in the Lord. Greet Urbanus, our

  265. co -worker in Christ, and my dear friend, Satchus.

  266. Greet Apelles, a good man whom Christ approves,

  267. and give my greetings to the believers from the

  268. household. of aristobulus greet herodian my fellow

  269. jew greet the lord's people from the household

  270. of narcissus give my greetings to trifina and

  271. trifosa the lord's workers and to dear persis

  272. who has worked so hard for the lord greet rufus

  273. whom the lord picked out to be his very own and

  274. also his dear mother who has been a mother to

  275. me. Give my greetings to Asencritus and Phlygian,

  276. Hermes, Patrobus, Hermas, and the brothers and

  277. sisters who meet with them. Give my greetings

  278. to Philologus, Julia, Nereus, his sister, and

  279. to Olympus and all the believers who meet with

  280. them. Greet each other with a sacred kiss. All

  281. the churches of Christ send you their greetings.

  282. Now we look at the list of people that Paul referred

  283. to. The first one is Phobie, and he calls her

  284. a faithful servant. And she most likely is the

  285. carrier of this letter. She's called a servant

  286. and a deacon. Those words are often translated

  287. interchangeably. He describes her as a helper

  288. of many, including himself. Never underestimate

  289. the power of practical service in advancing the

  290. gospel. Then he moves on to Priscilla and Aquila.

  291. He calls them courageous co -laborers. This married

  292. couple risked their lives for Paul and hosted

  293. a church in their home. Before church buildings

  294. existed, believers gathered in houses. Christianity

  295. was deeply relational. Sometimes the greatest

  296. ministry happens around a dinner table. Then

  297. he goes on to speak to a church full of faithful

  298. workers. Paul greets many others, men and women,

  299. who labored, served, suffered, and remained faithful.

  300. Some had been believers even before Paul himself.

  301. and others were noted as approved in Christ.

  302. You see here that Paul is generous with encouragement.

  303. And we need to learn something from this. Healthy

  304. churches celebrate faithful people, not just

  305. the visible leaders. Notice how many women were

  306. honored here. Women played a vital role in the

  307. early church's ministry. And Paul ends this section

  308. with, greet one another with a holy kiss. In

  309. that culture, that was the normal greeting. But

  310. it points to a deeper kind of sincere affection

  311. among God's people. Because the church should

  312. ultimately feel like real family. Picking up

  313. with verse 17. And now I make one more appeal,

  314. my dear brothers and sisters. Watch out for people

  315. who cause divisions and upset people's faith

  316. by teaching things contrary to what you have

  317. already been taught. Stay away from them. Such

  318. people are not serving Christ our Lord. They

  319. are serving their own personal interests. By

  320. smooth talk and glowing words, They deceive innocent

  321. people. But everyone knows that you are obedient

  322. to the Lord. This makes me very happy. I want

  323. you to be wise in doing right, to stay innocent

  324. of any wrong. The God of peace will soon crush

  325. Satan under your feet. May the grace of our Lord

  326. Jesus be with you. Here, Paul is encouraging

  327. the church to guard from division. After the

  328. warmth of all the greetings comes a warning.

  329. Note the people who cause divisions and avoid

  330. them. See, both truth and unity must be protected

  331. at the same time. Because unity without truth,

  332. will always drift into error. But truth without

  333. unity always becomes harsh. And the deceivers

  334. that came in, they used smooth words and flattering

  335. speech. They often targeted the young in the

  336. faith. And their real motive was not serving

  337. Christ, but serving themselves. We need to be

  338. wise in what is good and simple concerning evil.

  339. We need to know truth deeply rather than becoming

  340. fascinated with deception. Then Paul gives a

  341. powerful promise that the God of peace will crush

  342. Satan under your feet. Here we... See again that

  343. God is always victorious. And believers can walk

  344. in it. Picking up with verse 21. Timothy, my

  345. fellow co -worker, sends you his greetings, as

  346. do Lucius, Jason, and Sospiter, my fellow Jews.

  347. I, Tertius, the one writing this letter for Paul,

  348. send my greetings too. as one of the Lord's followers.

  349. Gaius says hello to you. He is my host and also

  350. serves as host to the whole church. Erastus,

  351. the city treasurer, sends you his greetings,

  352. and so does our brother Quartus. Now all glory

  353. to God, who is able to make you strong, just

  354. as my good news says. This message about Jesus

  355. Christ has revealed his plan for you Gentiles.

  356. A plan kept secret from the beginning of time.

  357. But now as the prophets foretold and as the eternal

  358. God has commanded, this message is made known

  359. to all Gentiles everywhere so that they too might

  360. believe and obey. All glory to the only wise

  361. God. through Jesus Christ forever. Amen. Paul

  362. closes Romans with greetings from his ministry

  363. team, including Timothy and Tertius, the man

  364. who physically wrote the letter. And then he

  365. ends exactly where the book of Romans should

  366. end. He ends with worship. Now to God, who is

  367. able to keep you strong, who is able... To establish

  368. you. With all the pressures believers face. Our

  369. stability and our strength comes from God. Through

  370. the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul calls it a mystery

  371. once hidden but now revealed. God's plan to save

  372. all nations. And as he finishes. To God. Alone

  373. wise. Be glory. through Jesus Christ forever.

  374. Romans 15 and 16 teaches us that the gospel -shaped

  375. church should be supportive, where the strong

  376. support and carry the weak. It should be unified,

  377. rallying around a central message that's received

  378. by the grace of God. It should be hope -filled.

  379. empowered by the Holy Spirit. It should be missional.

  380. It should care about the unchurched and unreached.

  381. It should be relational, honoring faithful servants

  382. in the body of Christ. It should be on guard

  383. or guarded, protecting the truth. It should be

  384. prayerful. Striving together in intercession,

  385. praying for each other fervently. It should be

  386. worshipful, giving glory to God alone. And above

  387. all, God is able to establish his people. So

  388. we don't place our confidence in personalities

  389. and programs or in plans. We anchor ourselves

  390. in the God who strengthens His church. Thank

  391. you for joining us for Life Group. Allow God's

  392. Word to build your faith and transform your life.
