  1. Welcome to Life Group. We invite you to join

  2. us in this verse -by -verse study through the

  3. Word of God. In this lesson of Life Group, we're

  4. going to be looking at Galatians chapter 3. Let's

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  5. begin. O foolish Galatians! Paul begins with

  6. saying foolish, and he's meaning here that they're

  7. just not using their mind or they're not comprehending.

  8. And he says, O foolish Galatians, who has cast

  9. an evil spell on you? This meaning that who has

  10. convinced you to believe their evil and false

  11. teachings? And continuing in verse 1, for the

  12. meaning of Jesus Christ's death was made as clear

  13. to you as if you had seen a picture of his death

  14. on the cross. He's saying that he has carefully

  15. and clearly explained to them what Jesus accomplished

  16. on the cross, and he feels like they should understand

  17. it by now. Verse 2, let me ask you this one question.

  18. Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the

  19. law of Moses? Of course not. You received the

  20. Spirit because you believed the message you heard

  21. about Jesus. How foolish can you be? After starting

  22. your Christian lives in the Spirit, why are you

  23. now trying to become perfect by your own human

  24. effort? The Galatians were deceived into thinking

  25. that spiritual growth or maturity could be achieved

  26. through works of the flesh. Instead of continued

  27. simple faith in Jesus and abiding in Jesus. Under

  28. law, man is attempting to be righteous, to grow

  29. in righteousness, and to earn or deserve the

  30. kindness and favor of God. But we know under

  31. grace, man becomes completely righteous and enjoys

  32. the kindness and favor of God through believing

  33. and receiving. Verse 4. Have you experienced

  34. so much for nothing? Surely it was not in vain,

  35. was it? Here Paul is saying, have you had such

  36. wonderful spiritual experiences and is all this

  37. for nothing? And he's wondering if all these

  38. gifts of the Spirit they had received would not

  39. have lasting value since they were trying to

  40. live by the law instead of faith. Verse 5, I

  41. ask you again, does God give you the Holy Spirit?

  42. and work miracles among you because you obey

  43. the law? Of course not. It is because you believe

  44. the message you heard about Christ. The Holy

  45. Spirit empowers us in response to our faith,

  46. and miracles take place according to our faith.

  47. But the Galatians have been deceived into thinking

  48. that real spiritual riches are obtained by pursuing

  49. God through a works relationship. Let's pick

  50. up in verse 6. Here we see that Abraham was declared

  51. righteous because of his faith. The law of Moses

  52. did not come into existence until approximately

  53. 600 years after Abraham was counted righteous

  54. because of his faith. Verse 7. are those who

  55. put their faith in God, as opposed to trying

  56. to keep a set of rules, Paul is saying here.

  57. Verse 8, what's more, the scriptures looked forward

  58. to this time when God would declare the Gentiles

  59. to be righteous because of their faith. God proclaimed

  60. this good news to Abraham long ago when he said,

  61. all nations will be blessed through you. So all

  62. who put their faith in Christ share the same

  63. blessing Abraham received because of his faith.

  64. So here we see Paul is describing that Abraham

  65. was declared righteous because of his faith.

  66. And now he's saying everyone can be declared

  67. right with God and be qualified to receive the

  68. same blessings God promised to Abraham and his

  69. descendants all through faith. Picking up with

  70. verse 10. And when we start talking about a curse

  71. being attached to the law, we have to go back

  72. to Deuteronomy 27 and 28. And Paul is referring

  73. to this and telling, The people of Galatia, he's

  74. saying, since it is impossible for you to perfectly

  75. keep the law of Moses, and you still insist on

  76. trying to be right with God by keeping the rules,

  77. instead of placing your confidence in the finished

  78. work of Jesus to justify you, you're subjecting

  79. yourself to the curses of breaking the law. And

  80. here's a sample list of the curses of breaking

  81. the law. Your towns and fields will not prosper.

  82. Your gardens will fail from lack of rain and

  83. insects. Your livestock will be stolen. You will

  84. live in poverty and lack. Your children will

  85. be taken away as slaves. You will be defeated

  86. and oppressed by your enemies. You will experience

  87. confusion, frustration, diseases, fever, plagues.

  88. inflammation, boils, tumors, madness, blindness,

  89. and panic? Well, those are listed among the curses

  90. of the law. And Paul is telling the Galatians,

  91. if you want to live by the law, then you're going

  92. to subject yourself to the curses of the law.

  93. Picking up in verse 11. So it is clear that no

  94. one can be made right with God by trying to keep

  95. the law. For the scriptures say, it is through

  96. faith that a righteous person has life. This

  97. way of faith is very different from the way of

  98. law, which says it is through obeying the law

  99. that a person has life. Here we see that God

  100. never intended the law to be the way we find

  101. our approval before him. He knew we could never

  102. keep the law. So God instituted a system of sacrifice

  103. along with the law. And the entire sacrificial

  104. system looked forward to what Jesus would accomplish

  105. on the cross for us. Picking up verse 13. But

  106. Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced

  107. by the law when he was hung on the cross. What

  108. an amazing verse. Here we find that... Jesus

  109. has redeemed us from the curse of the law. He

  110. bought us out and brought us out from being a

  111. slave to sin and from being subject to the curse

  112. of the law. So we see that Jesus has actually

  113. redeemed us from our towns and fields not prospering,

  114. our gardens failing, our livestock being stolen.

  115. From poverty and failure, from our children being

  116. taken away as slaves, from being defeated and

  117. oppressed by our enemies. He's redeemed us from

  118. confusion, frustration, diseases, fever, plagues,

  119. inflammation, boils, tumors, madness, blindness,

  120. panic, and so on. We are redeemed from the curses

  121. of the law. Let's continue in verse 13. Here

  122. we see Jesus took the curse we deserved upon

  123. himself on the cross. Our sins, the paycheck

  124. of our sins, the curses deserved for our sins,

  125. Jesus took all of that upon himself on the cross.

  126. Verse 14. Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed

  127. the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised

  128. to Abraham. Here it just keeps getting better

  129. and better. Not only did Jesus redeem us from

  130. the curse, he also qualified us for the blessing.

  131. What are the blessings? Well, if we go back to

  132. Deuteronomy, the blessings are... The Lord will

  133. guarantee his blessing over everything you do.

  134. You will be established as God's holy people.

  135. Everything you do will prosper. Your children

  136. will be blessed and prosper. Your gardens and

  137. livestock will prosper. You will always be on

  138. top. You will lend and not borrow. You will always

  139. have victory over your enemies. And he also includes

  140. the blessings of Abraham. What were the blessings

  141. of the... Blessings of Abraham. He told Abraham

  142. that he would bless him, that he would be a blessing,

  143. that the whole earth would be blessed through

  144. him. So in Christ, we receive those blessings,

  145. a promise that the Lord will bless us, that we

  146. will be a blessing to others, that the whole

  147. earth will be blessed through us. Continuing

  148. in verse 14. so that we who are believers might

  149. receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith.

  150. We know from Scripture that God, the Holy Spirit,

  151. He's the one who takes the things of God, God's

  152. blessings, His grace gifts, His great and precious

  153. promises. The Holy Spirit takes those things

  154. and then He manifests them in our lives. According

  155. to our faith. Picking up in verse 15. Dear brothers

  156. and sisters, here's an example from everyday

  157. life. Just as no one can set aside or amend an

  158. irrevocable agreement, so it is in this case.

  159. Here Paul is talking about a covenant, and covenants

  160. made between men stood firm once they were made,

  161. meaning no one could cancel them or add to them.

  162. And Paul uses this example to communicate the

  163. idea of how much more serious it is when God

  164. makes the covenant. Verse 16, God gave the promise

  165. to Abraham and his child. And notice that the

  166. scripture doesn't say, to his children, as if

  167. it meant many descendants. Rather, it says, to

  168. his child, and that, of course, means Christ.

  169. In your seed, all the nations of the earth shall

  170. be blessed because you have obeyed my voice.

  171. Paul is saying that this promise is referring

  172. to one specific descendant of Abraham. And to

  173. be clear, he's making sure you understand that

  174. it is Jesus who is that seed or that child. Verse

  175. 17. This is what I'm trying to say. The agreement

  176. God made with Abraham. could not be canceled

  177. 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses.

  178. God would be breaking his promise. And we know

  179. God always keeps his promises. And God's promise

  180. to Abraham and Jesus were not canceled at Mount

  181. Sinai. The unchanging nature of God's covenant

  182. with Abraham is an important principle. It was

  183. a one -sided covenant that was promised forever.

  184. There were no ifs in Abraham's covenant. There

  185. are plenty of ifs in the covenant of Moses. The

  186. Mosaic covenant was a two -sided covenant with

  187. both parties obligated to uphold it. This means

  188. that the promise of blessing stands eternally

  189. to Abraham and his descendants. And the same

  190. promise of blessing, then, is available for everyone

  191. who puts their faith in Jesus. Verse 18. So here

  192. Paul is saying that if the inheritance offered

  193. to Abraham was on the basis of law, it might

  194. not be permanent, because it would depend on

  195. Abraham keeping the law. But since the inheritance

  196. was offered on the basis of promise, God's promise,

  197. it stands forever. Jews in Galatia were building

  198. their case quoting Moses or the law, but Paul

  199. is responding by referring to Abraham and referring

  200. to the promise. The false teachers were appealing

  201. to centuries of tradition and the proud history

  202. of the law of Moses. Paul, though, is appealing

  203. to the grander covenant between God and Abraham,

  204. which is centuries older. Verse 19, why then

  205. was the law given? Paul is saying this because

  206. understanding the purpose of the law helps us

  207. embrace our freedom from it, from the law. Continuing

  208. in 19, it was given alongside the promise to

  209. show people their sins, but the law was designed

  210. to last only until the coming of the child who

  211. was promised. So here we see that the purpose

  212. of the law God's holy standard was given for

  213. three reasons. First, so that we would not destroy

  214. ourselves before Jesus came. Two, so we could

  215. recognize our inability to keep the rules. And

  216. three, so that we see our need for salvation.

  217. Continuing in verse 19, God gave his law through

  218. angels to Moses, who is the mediator between

  219. God and the people. Now, according to ancient

  220. Jewish tradition, the law was delivered to Moses

  221. on Mount Sinai by the hands of angels, and Moses

  222. became the mediator between God and his people.

  223. Verse 20, Now a mediator is helpful if more than

  224. one party must reach an agreement, but God, who

  225. is one, did not use a mediator when he gave his

  226. promise to Abraham. So we see that the Israelites

  227. needed a mediator between them and God, but we

  228. don't need a mediator now. The law was a two

  229. -party agreement brought by mediators, but salvation

  230. in Jesus is by faith, and it's received by a

  231. promise. Verse 21. Is there a conflict then between

  232. God's law and God's promises? Absolutely not.

  233. If the law could give us new life, we could be

  234. made right with God by obeying it. Here we see

  235. that the law is not something evil opposing God's

  236. promise. The problem with the law is found in

  237. its inability to give righteousness since no

  238. one can keep it. Verse 22. But the scriptures

  239. declare that we are all prisoners of sin. And

  240. here Paul, he's painting a picture of imprisonment.

  241. like the bars of the cell or sin keeping us confined

  242. and condemned. And the law put us in prison because

  243. it pointed out our sinful condition, all of our

  244. faults. The law cannot help us because it is

  245. the law that put us in prison in the first place.

  246. Verse 22. So we receive God's promise of freedom

  247. only by believing in Jesus Christ. And here we

  248. see that only faith in the one who perfectly

  249. kept the law and took our punishment upon himself

  250. can free us from our imprisonment to sin. Picking

  251. up with verse 23. Before the way of faith in

  252. Christ was available to us, we were placed under

  253. guard by the law. We were kept in protective

  254. custody, so to speak, until the way of faith

  255. was revealed. Now Paul is showing us another

  256. way to see the law. He's saying that we could

  257. see it as guarding us under protective custody.

  258. Now what does it mean to be under protective

  259. custody of the law? It meant that the law showed

  260. us the best way to live. It showed us what is

  261. right and wrong. It provided a foundation. for

  262. civil law verse 24 let me put it another way

  263. the law was our guardian until christ came it

  264. protected us until we could be made right with

  265. god through faith we need to understand that

  266. the ultimate purpose of the law is to bring people

  267. to jesus the messiah If someone presents the

  268. law in a way that does not ultimately point people

  269. to faith in Jesus, they're not presenting the

  270. law properly. Verse 25. And now that the way

  271. of faith has come, we no longer need the law

  272. as our guardian. Here Paul uses the illustration

  273. that the law is a personal guardian for us. And

  274. we need to understand that when we enter a relationship

  275. with God through faith, we no longer need a guardian

  276. over our lives and behavior. Though we remember

  277. what the guardian taught us, though we respect

  278. our guardian, the law, well, now we don't live

  279. under it anymore because we live under Jesus

  280. by faith. Verse 26. For you are all children

  281. of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Now in

  282. traditional Jewish thinking, your standing before

  283. God was measured by your obedience to the law.

  284. And here Paul says that we can be considered

  285. sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Through

  286. faith alone. To be sons of God. means that we

  287. have a special relationship with God as a loving,

  288. caring Father. It is a place of closeness, a

  289. place of affection, a place of special care and

  290. attention. Verse 27, And all who have been united

  291. with Christ in baptism have put on the character

  292. of Christ. As believers, we've been baptized

  293. in Christ. We've been fully immersed and completely

  294. covered with Christ. Continuing in verse 27,

  295. Paul says it's like putting on new clothes. So

  296. we need to understand this. How we dress has

  297. an impact on how we think and act. How we dress

  298. also has an impact. on how we appear to other

  299. people. And Paul is saying our appropriate clothing

  300. for each day is to put on Christ. People should

  301. see that you belong to him just by looking at

  302. your life. See, we aren't simply associated with

  303. Jesus. We are identified in him. If he's a son

  304. of God, so are we. If he stands righteous before

  305. God the Father, so do we. If he has free access

  306. to the throne of God, so do we. If he has victory

  307. over spiritual powers and darkness, so do we.

  308. We aren't just associated with Jesus. We are

  309. in Jesus. Verse 28. There is no longer Jew or

  310. Gentile, slave or free, male and female, for

  311. you are all one in Christ Jesus. We need to understand

  312. that Jewish men during this time, when they woke

  313. up, they would thank God every day that they

  314. were not born a Gentile, that they weren't born

  315. a slave, that they were not born a woman. And

  316. now, Paul is saying, look, none of that matters

  317. anymore. It's not about being a Jew or a Gentile.

  318. It's not about being slave or free. It's not

  319. about being a man or a woman. We are all one

  320. in Christ Jesus. All dividing lines have been

  321. erased. When we are identified with Christ, we

  322. are all one in Christ. Verse 29. And now that

  323. you belong to Christ, you are the true children

  324. of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God's promise

  325. to Abraham belongs to you. Since all Christians

  326. belong to Jesus the Messiah, all Christians are

  327. spiritual descendants of Abraham and heirs of

  328. God's blessings and promises to Abraham. Thank
