Not Mine, But God's: Peace

Week number six in our series that we've entitled,

Not Mine, But God's. Everybody say that, Not

Mine, But God's. Now our first four messages

brought us up to the Advent season, right? But

we're continuing with those words that are commonly

talked about and used during the Advent season.

See, long before Gabriel spoke to Mary, angels

visited the shepherds. Our wise men saw the newly

formed star. Long before any of that happened,

God planted a promise, a seed. We talked about

seeds last week. Everybody say a promise. A seed.

God planted a promise in the hearts of his people

that the Messiah was coming, the deliverer. The

rescuer is coming. Now, I believe the two most

important events in the history of the world,

two most important events, are the incarnation

and the resurrection. Everybody say incarnation.

Everybody say resurrection. Because without either

one of those, we would be helplessly and hopelessly

lost. Now, the Bible encourages us to celebrate

the resurrection, to remember the resurrection,

the death, the burial, and the resurrection of

Christ. And some people, and I agree with you,

the Bible doesn't actually tell us or invite

us to celebrate the birth. But... What we're

celebrating is the incarnation. Because without

the incarnation, without God stepping down out

of heaven and adding humanity to his deity, you

know what? If that didn't happen, then Jesus

is no different than anyone in this room. Because

he would have been born in sin. And if he would

have been born in sin, then he would have had

to die for his own sin. But he was sinless. I'm

glad two people are talking to me. Here's what

I want to encourage you. Never get to the point

where that's not a big deal. Look to the person

beside you and remind them that's a big deal.

God did that for us. And it's easy when we go

to church all of our life to come to the point

where I've heard that a thousand times. You know,

that's not really a big deal. But this is a big

deal. God loves you so much that at just the

right time, the Bible says, the Father looked

at the Son in the throne room of eternity at

just the right time, and He said, it's time.

And Jesus stepped down out of heaven. He's all

God. Everybody say all God. And he's all man

at the same time. He's not half and half. He's

all God. He's all man at the same time. That's

what the incarnation is about. And that's why

I think we need to celebrate that more than just

one day a year. So, Advent. How many of you grew

up going to a church where they did Advent services?

Four people? I didn't grow up with that. My dad's

a pastor. I mean, we never, you know, had a lot

of times there'll be a wreath and there'll be

different candles and pink candles and a purple

candle and all those kind of things, right? And

you light a candle and read Bible verses each

week. But I was exposed to that. And when I went

to Myrtle Beach, I became the chaplain at Lakewood

Camping Resort in Myrtle Beach. And you know,

it really meant a lot to me, even though I'd

never experienced that growing up, never been

involved in that. What does Advent mean? Advent

means the arrival. Everybody say the arrival.

The arrival of a notable person or a thing. So

you might have heard the word arrival used like...

I mean, the advent used like the advent of the

internet, which could be very bad. The advent

of smartphones, all those kind of things, right?

But it's the arrival of something. Notable person,

and we've talked about the incarnation, so Jesus

is the notable person. The God -man is the notable

person. But along with him, he brought some notable

things. The greatest is salvation, right? That's

the greatest thing he brought, a way that we

can be saved from our sins and spend eternity

with God. Now, during this season, because we're

looking at this for four weeks as well, we're

preparing our hearts to celebrate the birth of

Jesus. You know, you see all the commercialization

of Christmas and all those kind of things. And

hopefully by focusing on the birth of Jesus and

the incarnation for these four weeks, we can

keep focused on the right thing. Right? So we're

preparing our hearts. I'm not just up here just

blowing air out of my mouth, right? We're preparing

our hearts to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We're

also... receiving some things. We're having the

opportunity to receive some things that Jesus

brought with him when he came, some notable things

that he made available to us and he offers to

us. And last week, we looked at hope. Everybody

say hope. This week, we're looking at peace.

Everybody say peace. Next week, we're looking

at joy. Everybody say joy. And then the fourth

week, we're looking at love. Everybody say love.

Because these are four notable things that Jesus

brought with him, made it available to all men.

And if we listen with expectation, see, we can

come and we can just listen or we can listen

with expectation, but I believe if we... come

expecting. Everybody say expecting. If we listen

with anticipation that God's going to speak to

our hearts and God's going to just do something

great in our lives today, we just might hear

his voice. You just might hear his voice calling

you out of the noise and into his life. Because

these things that we're talking about, these

notable things that came with Jesus and he brought

those things with him, those things are only

a part. You can only receive them when you're

in Christ. So he wants to call you out of the

noise and into his life where you will experience

the things that are available to you in Christ.

Luke 2, verses 8 through 14. That night there

Luke 2:8–14

were shepherds staying in the fields nearby,

guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly an angel

of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance

of the Lord's glory surrounded them. They were

terrified, but the angel reassured them. Don't

be afraid. Everybody say, don't be afraid. Don't

be afraid. You know, last week, Gabriel appeared

to Mary, and she was a little shaken up, just

like you would be if an angel just showed up

right now and started talking to you. I mean,

if an angel appeared right beside me, I mean,

we would all be shaken up a little bit, I believe,

right? All of a sudden, there he is. All of a

sudden, he's talking and I'm not talking anymore.

I'll hand him the mic. And this is common when

God sends an angel to talk to people that it

shakes them up a little bit, but God's word is

always, don't be afraid. Everybody say, don't

be afraid. That's not just when angels show up.

This word from God is for when fear shows up.

Does fear ever show up to anybody in the room?

Well, when fear shows up, God's word for you

is don't be afraid. This angel talked to the

shepherds. Don't be afraid, he said. He had a

message. I bring you good news. Everybody say

good news. I bring you good news that will bring

great joy. Everybody say great joy. And the translation

of this is great mega joy. I mean, it's great,

great joy. Not just great joy, but great, great

joy. I bring you good news that will bring great

joy to all people. To all people. The Savior.

Yes, the Messiah, the Lord, has been born today

in Bethlehem, the city of David. And you will

recognize him by this sign. You will find a baby

wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a

feed trough. I mean, you know, manger is like

a pretty word now, but it's a feed trough. You're

going to find this baby. Wrapped up in claws

and laying in a feed trough. Suddenly, here's

another suddenly. Everybody say suddenly. Suddenly,

the angel, that one angel was joined by a vast

host of others. The armies of heaven. And they

were praising God and saying, glory to God and

I is heaven. And peace on earth to those with

whom God is pleased. Let's join their praise.

You want to say it? Let's say it. Glory to God

in highest heaven. And peace on earth to those

with whom God is pleased. The angels declared

peace on earth. Everybody say peace on earth.

December is not always a peaceful time of year,

is it? Most people walk into December with more

stress and anxiety and exhaustion than peace.

Has anybody ever experienced some of that? For

many, the holidays only magnify what's missing.

You remember the way things used to be, you know.

Gannon and I had a very close friend that we've

had now for over 20 years. They've actually visited

the church. They would come and snowbird in Claremont.

And we got word yesterday morning that Lois,

many of you might have met Jerry and Lois from

New York. Lois passed away unexpectedly yesterday

morning. And, you know, it's like, it's one thing

when you kind of expect it because you've been

going through some things and going down. But

she passed away yesterday morning. So for that

family, you know, it's a time of celebration.

And it's a time, you know, it's Christmas time.

But you know what? It will probably always be

marked for them just weeks before Christmas.

That's the way they're going to remember it.

And Gayna's dad the same way just the week before

Christmas. And my mom the same way. And you remember

those things. You remember what's missing. You

remember the people who are missing. Right? But,

when you're in Christ, you don't grieve like

the world grieves, is what the Bible says. Hello?

Because we're in Christ. And we have hope, like

we talked about last week, right? We have hope.

We're in Christ. So instead of being messed up

in stress and exhaustion and anxiety, you know

what? In Christ, everybody say in Christ, there

is peace. In Christ, there is peace. I want you

to remind yourself of this every time. Because

every single person in this room is going to

have an opportunity over the next three weeks

and month or, you know, probably today. Everybody's

going to have an opportunity to get stressed.

Everybody is going to have an opportunity for

a little anxiety. Everybody's going to have an

opportunity to be exhausted. Everyone. Look at

the person beside you and tell them, you too.

Everyone's going to have that opportunity. Some

people sit in this room and say, well, I'm the

only one because I'm the only one who's gone

through what I've gone through, so I'm the only

one who has stress or anxiety or exhaustion.

Now, that's a big lie from the enemy. That's

a big lie from the enemy. To have those thoughts

that you're the only one that has the opportunity

to be stressed out. You're the only one that

has the opportunity to worry about something.

When you find yourself there, then you think

that, you know, I'm the only one. And that's

the wrong place to be. For any of us. Ever. Because

God. Has given you. In Christ. Everybody say

in Christ. In Christ. The peace of God. Is available.

For you. No matter what's happening on the outside.

See, natural peace depends on circumstances.

And if you're wondering why I got this rock and

this paperweight up here, throughout this series,

this has represented the best that we can do

on our own. This represents us living as putting

more emphasis on our soul than on our spirit.

And for those of you who haven't been here, I

need to remind you that you are a spirit. You

are created in the image of God who is a spirit.

You are a spirit. You have a soul. Your soul

is your mind or your thoughts, your will or your

desires. Y 'all taking notes? Your mind, your

will, and your emotions. Now that's your soul.

I don't know how many years of my experience

even knowing God and trying to live for God and

love God and walk with God, the best I was doing

was trying to polish up my soul. Like, I read

the Bible, and then I'm like, okay, well, I've

got to do this, and I've got to do that, and

I've got to do this. And it's like me taking

a piece of sandpaper to this rock, trying to

make it look as good as I can make it look. But

here's where I missed it. God isn't just calling

us to do the best that we can do, to, like, read

His Word and then do the best that we can do.

God is calling us to exchange our life of living

based out of our soul all the time and exchange

our life for his life and live as a spirit connected

to his Holy Spirit who has moved on the inside

of us. And we need to live as spirit beings.

And allow the Spirit of God communicating with

our spirit to overcome and dictate our mind,

our will, and our emotions. We've spent our whole

lives trying to live as a soul and be the best

soul we can be. But we're spirits. We need to

learn to live as spirits. Because if we just

live in the soul realm, if we live in the natural

realm, listen, natural peace depends on circumstances.

That's the only peace that you can have in this

world apart from being in Christ. The only peace

you can have is a peace based on what's going

on around you at any given moment. If you have

peace when everything is going lovely, if you

have peace, but then when trouble comes, all

of a sudden you're falling apart, that's an indicator

of something. That's an indicator that you're

living your life in the natural, soulish, in

the flesh realm. And not living... And being

dictated by the spirit of God in your spirit.

Connected to God's promises and God's word. Natural

peace depends on circumstances, but God's peace,

the Bible says, surpasses understanding. It surpasses

human reasoning. See, it's not just locked into

what's going on. Even if something doesn't go

my way, I can stand in the peace of God because

I'm in Christ. And Jesus says, my peace I give

to you, my peace I leave with you. It's not like

the world's peace. Everybody say, not like the

world's peace. Not like the world's peace. And

guess what? If we have... the peace of God, the

world can't take it away. But if we have natural

peace, natural circumstances can rob us of the

peace of God. I'll try. I don't even know how

to say it. If all we have is natural peace, the

world can take it away. The natural world can

take away natural peace. By giving us a different

circumstance. But if we have the peace of God,

we can stand in peace no matter what circumstance

we face. I'm the preacher and I wish I could

stand up here and tell you that I never lose

my peace. But I do want to tell you something.

I don't lose my peace. Near as much as I used

to lose my peace. You know, I used to lose my

peace all the time. I mean, all you have to do

is drive on I -4 for just a minute. Or even 27.

I mean, you're driving on 27 and somebody's like,

In an Indy race, zipping in and out. And I'm

like, I used to lose my peace, but I don't lose

my peace anymore. You know what? I started praying

for him. I said, God, please protect those idiots

in that car. I don't want them to die tonight

without knowing you. There's been times when

I've been on I -4, and you know what? You just

stop. And it's good since they opened up the

lane. You know, that makes it a lot better. Opened

up that extra lane. But there's times when it's

just locked down. So instead of, listen, instead

of losing your peace over it, I found something

that works for me. If I just start singing, if

I just start singing praises to God right in

the middle of it, you know, there's... I'll never

forget. There was one day on I -4. I mean, y

'all have heard of it like a glory cloud, right?

It's like, just all of a sudden, it's like, the

glory of God. I think we need to do a series

on the glory. Remind me of that. But I've been

in the car singing, and it's just like, I'm just

spending time with God. And I'm still flowing

with traffic. I haven't completely. But... Just

me and the presence of God in my car? I could

care less how long it takes me to get anywhere

at that point. But see, I had to make a choice.

And you're going to have to make a choice when

a circumstance comes your way that is going to

rob you of your peace this afternoon or tomorrow.

You're going to have to stand up. Your spirit,

I'm not talking about with your natural feet.

I'm talking about your spirit's going to have

to stand up. You're going to say, no, I'm not

falling for it this time. I'm not falling for

that anymore. Because I have the peace of God

that surpasses understanding. And it's guarding

my heart and it's guarding my mind. And I'm not

going to fall for your tricks anymore. I'm not

going to be swayed by my circumstances anymore.

You're going to have to stand up. Your spirit's

going to have to stand up and take charge over

your soul. God's peace surpasses understanding.

And remember in this series we're talking about...

Whatever your source is, everybody say source.

Whatever your source is, see if your source is

you, that's what you're going to display to the

world, is you. But if your source is in Christ,

then you're going to display him to the world.

And the world desperately needs, the children

of God to rise up and display Him. The people

that you work with are in desperate need of you

rising up and seeing Christ in you, the hope

of glory. Not just seeing you, your customers,

the people that you work for, the people in your

house. Because sometimes we can pull it off good

when we're not in our house, but in your house.

You need to display Christ. Luke 2, that's not

the right reference. I can look it up for you

later. But anyway, it's verse 27 of something.

Here's what Jesus said. I think it's in John.

Here's what Jesus said. I'm leaving you with

a gift. Everybody say a gift. He's leaving you

with a gift. Peace of mind and peace of heart.

So we receive gifts, right? You have to receive

a gift. You don't work for a gift. If you're

working for peace in your mind and your heart,

then all you're looking for and working for is

natural. But you receive peace. It's a gift from

Jesus. I know I've shared this before. I'm going

to share it again. A long time ago, we were doing

our conference, and it was in the early years

of the conference. And we couldn't spend, you

know, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with our

extended family. We had to get to Myrtle Beach

because we're expecting 1 ,900 people. And we

booked all the hotel rooms and everybody's coming.

And it was just like, we couldn't spend those

days in upstate South Carolina or in western

North Carolina. We had to get there. Had to do

a seating chart by hand. JT knows what that's

like. Anyway, we had to get there and get to

work because the morning right after Christmas

Day, I mean, it was wide open until like January

3rd. I'm talking working 20 plus hours most days.

So we couldn't be there, but we decided to go

early. And we drove like eight hours from where

we were in Alabama. We drove. To go have Christmas

with our extended family. Gayna makes amazing

chicken and dumplings. So she made chicken and

dumplings. And we invited everybody. I don't

know why. But people decided. You know family

decided. You know we're not doing two Christmases.

We're not coming. So we made all these chicken

and dumplings. Got word that nobody's coming.

Just parents. It's great. We ate chicken and

dumplings. I'm never upset over eating chicken

and dumplings. But we bought presents for all

the children. Age -appropriate presents, right?

Because you got like two -year -olds, you know,

different ages. Bought presents. Wrapped them

up. We left the presents under the Christmas

tree. Because we wanted to express our love.

A way to express your love is, one way is by

giving gifts, right? For God so loved he, I'm

glad I got two gaves. For God so loved he gave,

right? So we left the gifts. We came back later

in January, came back again. Christmas tree's

down, all the decorations are down, everything's

done. But behind the couch, Y 'all know what

an entertainment center is? Big old huge entertainment

center with speakers and a record player in it.

Eight track. Had an eight track in my first car.

Anyway, behind the couch and the entertainment

center were all those gifts for the children.

You know, we gave a gift, but it was never received.

You have to receive a gift. And Jesus said, I'm

leaving you with a gift. Here's the news today.

There's a gift wrapped up for you from Jesus.

And that gift is peace for your mind and peace

for your heart. A peace is greater than the circumstances

that you face. But you have to receive it. He

said, and the peace I give is a gift the world

cannot give. And then he said, so don't be troubled.

So when you have the opportunity to be troubled,

say, nope, not going to take that opportunity.

Jesus told me I didn't have to be troubled or

afraid. Jesus gave me his peace, and it'll guard

my heart, and it'll guard my mind. And if you

want to know where this is, for those of you

taking notes, it's John 14, verse 27. I got John

John 14:27

right. But if you want to read it later, John

14. 27. Listen, the world can only offer temporary

peace, conditional peace, circumstantial peace,

or escape -based peace. You might say, what's

escape -based peace? Well, that's when you just

get to the point where you've had so much that

you just got to go eat some chocolate. That's

escape -based peace. That means that you just

get to the point where you just got to go watch

Netflix or Hulu or whatever it is. You just got

to escape, right? Got to go on a vacation somewhere.

I'm just so overwhelmed. I got to get awake.

And for Gayna, this will be going to the shopping

mall. She loves to shop. Hobby Lobby. She'll

go spend hours just walking around Hobby Lobby.

She don't like to go shopping with me because

I go get what I'm there for and I get out as

quick as I can. I can leave my house, go to BJ's

and be back home in about 35 minutes. Go get

everything I needed and get out of there. Listen,

those escapes are just temporary relief. Temporary

relief. Because the peace that your hope is in

is a natural peace, like the world gives. Here's

the peace that God gives. A peace that stands

in storms, that's the peace that God gives. A

peace that is not threatened, never threatened.

A peace that cannot be stolen. And this peace

is rooted in who God is. I know you know it,

I know you know it, and I know you've heard it,

but God is Yahweh Shalom. God is Yahweh Shalom.

God is peace. He is peace. He gives you peace.

He is your peace. When you're in Him, when you're

receiving the gift that He gives us, By being

in him, part of that gift is peace. Natural peace

fails under pressure every time. But God's peace

holds under pressure. The shepherds are terrified.

The angel shows up talking to them. But just

like God's answer for us is do not be afraid,

his answer to the... The answer to the angels

was do not be afraid. Listen, the angel was still

there. Their circumstances didn't change. The

peace entered the scene. Even to the point where

a multitude, they didn't have to tell them not

to be afraid again because the peace of God had

entered the scene. When God's peace shows up,

fear loses authority over your life. I'm just

letting it sit there a minute. When you have

the peace of God in Christ, fear loses authority.

Anxiety loses volume because it can get loud.

And pressure loses its power when we receive

that gift of God's peace. Natural peace comes

and goes, right? Comes and goes. But God's peace

stays and strengthens. It will strengthen you.

His peace will stay with you. But we have to

receive it and continue receiving it and continue

to stand, continue. Our spirits continue to stand

up. and rule and have dominion over our souls.

This is the way it happens. It's how you receive

it. Your spirit receives it. Philippians 4, 7.

Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds

anything we can understand. When's the last time

somebody looked at you and said, wow, if I was

going through what you're going through, I would

be a mess. How are you not a mess? Because I

have the peace of God that surpasses understanding.

It guards my heart and it guards my mind. You

know what? Before I received the gift of peace

from God, I used to be tore up any time I went

through something like this. But not today. You

will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything

we can understand. His peace will guard your

heart and your mind as you live in Christ Jesus.

Everybody say, in Christ Jesus. Every time we

see in Christ, through Christ, by Christ, we're

finding something that's available to us in Christ.

Those prepositions mean a lot. A lot of times

we just read right through them and we don't

think about them. But this is telling us something.

In Christ, this is what's available to us. In

Christ, his peace to guard our heart and our

mind. Hallelujah. I'm not talking about a peace

that occasionally visits your heart. Or a peace

that every once in a while drops in your mind.

We're talking about the peace of God guarding

your heart and your mind. His peace is not fragile.

Natural peace is fragile, but his peace is not.

Here's a Greek word for guard. It means to guard,

to protect, to keep watch over the peace of God.

Protects you, it keeps his watch over you, guards

you. Like a military sentinel. It's like, I'm

God's peace. You're not coming in. Fear, you're

not coming in. Worry, you're not coming in. This

is God's peace. Guards, keep quiet. It's like

a military sentinel. To actively display whatever

defensive or offensive means are necessary to

guard. That's what happens when your spirit stands

up. Peace. This is Cambridge Dictionary. The

state of not being interrupted or annoyed by

worry. Problems. noise, unwanted actions. Everybody

say this with me. I will not be interrupted anymore.

It's a Greek word for peace. It means one. It

means peace. It means quietness. It means rest.

This is the New Testament. We looked at the Old

Testament word for peace a few weeks ago. But

this peace is rest for your heart and for your

mind. Romans 14, 17. I say this every once in

a while, but until we all get it, I'm going to

keep saying it. That's okay. Until we all get

it. Romans 14, 17. For the kingdom of God. Everybody

say the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God. Jesus

ushered in the kingdom of God into this earth.

The advent of the kingdom was Jesus coming to

earth. For the kingdom of God is not eating and

drinking. Everybody say not rules. See, everybody

was all twisted up, messed up with the rules.

It's like you got to do this, do this, do this.

You can't do this. You can't eat that. You can't.

eat this, but you better eat this, and you better

eat that, and it's just all about rules. But

the kingdom of God is beyond that. It's bigger

than that. The kingdom of God is not eating and

drinking. Here's what the kingdom of God is.

Righteousness. Everybody say righteousness. Righteousness.

I'm going to go ahead and add this in here. Gift

righteousness. Not works righteousness. By receiving

Christ, we receive his righteousness. In Christ,

we become clothed in the righteousness of God.

In Christ Jesus is what the Bible says. So we

take off our unrighteousness and we put on the

robe of Jesus' righteousness. That's what the

kingdom of God's about. About us being in right

standing with God, not based on our ability to

perform, but based on what he's done for us.

The kingdom of God is not about the rules. It's

about righteousness. It's about two more things.

Kingdom of God is about peace. This is how important

peace is to God. He is Yahweh Shalom. He is I

am your peace. And he says. I've ushered in my

kingdom into the earth for you to be a part of

the kingdom and to experience everything I have

for you. Jesus said, I've got a gift for you,

and it's peace, and it's not like the world's

peace. And in the kingdom of God, this whole

kingdom is about gift righteousness and peace

and joy in the Holy Spirit. It's how important

this is to God. Peace is important. He wants

you. to receive his gift of peace that's found

in his person. The kingdom of God invites us

to exchange panic for presence. The kingdom of

God invites us to exchange stress for surrender.

Kingdom of God invites you to exchange worry

for worship. The kingdom of God invites us to

exchange fear. Because God didn't give you a

spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound

mind. So the kingdom of God invites you to exchange

fear. For faith. You see, exchange. See, it's

not ours, but God's. And today, especially not

natural peace, but the peace of God. Peace didn't

come wrapped in perfection. Not in a palace.

Not with the best. Peace didn't come wrapped

that way. Peace came wrapped in swaddling cloths,

just strips of cloth. Not the fanciest outfit

from the fanciest store. Strips of cloth. Not

in a palace. Or a jewel -encrusted baby bed.

But not a feed trough. So the advent, the coming

of the notable person, Jesus, the Son of God,

also brought about the advent of the notable

thing that we're talking about today. And that's

supernatural peace. Supernatural peace. He brought

it. He offers it. He wraps it up in gift form

to each one of us. We have to receive it. By

standing up. Everybody say, I'm going to stand

up. I'm going to stand up. Every time some circumstance

tries to knock me down or take my peace or steal

my joy, I'm going to stand up. And my spirit

is going to rule over my mind, my will, and my

emotions. Jesus still brings peace today. If

we'll receive him, if we will rest in him, if

we'll do those things, then we're going to display

him. It's not my peace, but God's. And I'm here

to declare to you that it's available for every

single one of you. It's his gift for you. So

in the... opportunities of stress and worry and

exhaustion that we face during this time of year.

Unwrap the peace of God. Enjoy the peace of God.

Experience the peace of God. Because that's what

he has for you. Let's pray. God, thank you. Thank

you for your truth. Thank you for your word.

Thank you for all that you're doing. God, I pray

that we would receive your word today. We would

receive your gift today. And we would stand up.
